Juniors for Goryeb Nine-Hole Golf Fundraiser to be Held
A
fter spending time as a patient at Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center, Cole Ekert, a 10th grader at Chatham High School, and avid golfer, wanted to give back. “I know how stressful hospital visits can be for kids and I wanted to find a way to make their experiences a little better.” Likewise, Sydney Lapper, a 10th grader at Gill St. Bernard’s and her sister Whitney, a 7th grader at the school, who also golf, were looking to give back. The hospital paired them together, and according to Cole’s mom Samantha, “It was a perfect match – a hole in one.” Last year, the kids planned a successful golf event called Juniors for Goryeb, raising $18,000 for the renovation of the pediatric playspace, Mickey’s Garden. This year, they hope to raise over $20,000 to purchase 47 gaming systems and games for pediatric patient rooms. “Many of the gaming systems need to be replaced and new rooms need to be stocked,” says Cole. “These systems really help kids relax while they are in the hospital. They are very important for kids to use to stay connected to other kids. I am so glad we can help them.”
To reach this goal, the junior co-chairs will again be hosting the Juniors for Goryeb event, on June 5 at Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham, where 36 junior golfers, ages 10-18, will enjoy a relaxed 9-hole outing, with a banquet that includes their parents to follow. They are currently seeking corporate sponsors for Gold ($1000), Silver ($500) and Bronze ($250) levels and individual donations of any size. To register to play, sponsor or donate, go to: http://www. f4mmc.org/juniorsForeGoryeb. “There are a lot of charity outings for adults,” says Whitney. “We thought it would be fun to have one for kids. We love watching the kids show up with big smiles on their faces to play a fun day of golf that will help others. It’s a really good day.” “It’s incredible to see kids giving back to kids,” echoes Sydney. “We are so proud of our children who have turned their love of golf into their passion for helping others,” says Melissa, mother of Sidney and Whitney. “They are three amazing kids with huge hearts.” “I too am proud of the kids’ dedication,” says Samantha. “They truly care about the cause and are gaining leadership skills by running the event. May 2019
“I’m also thrilled that so many kids play in the event,” she adds, “A wonderful by-product is introducing philanthropy to children. I hope this encourages their lifelong support of giving to others.” “Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Medical Center is grateful to the kids and their families for all of their hard work and dedication to creating this wonderful event,” says Geraldine Kling, major gifts officer, Foundation for Morristown Medical Center.

LOOKING AHEAD—TUESDAY, JUNE 4
NOW’S THE TIME TOUR Collective Soul & Gin Blossoms
C
ollective Soul are pumped and primed to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2019 in all-out style, but they’re really just gearing up for the long haul. Ever since the barnburning rock band from Stockbridge, Georgia burst onto the national scene with the runaway success of their multi-platinum 1993 debut Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid and its ensuing mega-smash hits like “Shine” and “Breathe,” they’ve been on an upward trajectory that’s seen them play to sold-out audiences across the globe while concurrently amassing an impressive catalog of beloved songs instantly recognizable by their titles alone. They are proud to welcome the newest member of their recorded family into the world titled Blood. Blood is the culmination of a quarter-century of Collective Soul assessing not only where they’ve come from, but also where they’re going.
Collective Soul
The Gin Blossoms record “New Miserable Experience” with singles “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs Rita,” and “Found Out About You” rocketed the band into the mainstream going on to sell over 5 million copies making the band a 90’s radio mainstay. In 1995, Robin Wilson, Jesse Valenzuela and veteran composer Marshall Crenshaw wrote the bands 4th of 9 sound track inclusions; “Til I Hear It From You.” The smash hit was released as a Gin Blossoms single and it appeared on the platinum sound track for the film Empire Records. The band performed in over 100 cities in 2017, and with additional promotional stops 2017 was one of the busiest touring years since the early 90’s. 2017-2018 laps the 25th anniversary of the bands 5 times platinum album New Miserable Experience. Gin Blossoms
In addition to regular admission, special VIP packages are available for each band that include exclusive pre-show Meet and Greet.

Improve Your Health & Feel Your Best with High-Quality Nutrition & Wellness Programs By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

3yond Nutrition, located in Caldwell, was started in 2014 by Beth Candela. After being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and prescribed medicine that only helped some of her symptoms, she knew she needed to do more. “I became a Registered Dietitian because I wanted to take my own health back in my hands,” said Beth. An avid marathon runner, she obtained board certification in sports dietetics in order to work with athletes. Interestingly, although most athletes focus on how to prepare for a competition, Beth says it is their daily nutrition that is very important and that which makes the biggest difference. “Registered Dietitians share researched, evidence-based facts; we are the food experts,” said Beth. Beth helps people lose weight, lower blood pressure, cholesterol as well as their blood sugar. In fact, she has actually helped people who were insulin-dependent completely reverse their diabetes. Beth also conducts food sensitivity testing to help people who have irritable bowel syndrome, migraine headaches and auto-immune diseases, such Irritable Bowel Disease, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. She accepts most health insurance, which will often cover basic nutrition education. She has also taken many counseling classes. “It’s not just about food.
Beth Candela Sometimes it’s emotional; something in their life is out of balance. People turn toward food as a distraction or to avoid feeling sad, lonely or stressed,” said Beth. Beth also opened Beyond Cryotherapy in 2018, and some clients use both services. Our Whole Body Cryotherapy and Infrared Sauna, she explained, can help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases and inflammation, improve sleep and focus, oxygenate and detoxify the body, help with weight loss, blood pressure and strengthen the immune sysytem. It can also help injuries heal faster, reduce pain, bring down inflammation, and increase energy.
Empowering Women. Changing Lives.
Low Cost or No Cost Services
This is why she chose the name B3yond Nutrition. It’s a comprehensive approach to becoming and staying healthy by focusing on your nutrition, fitness and wellness goals. She does all the counseling herself, and most of it is one-on-one.

o your teeth no longer appear round when you smile because they have become thin and angular around the gum line? Does food, especially vegetables, frequently lodge between your front teeth because the gum around them has receded and spaces have developed? These are indications of gum recession and root erosion. Erosion inevitably occurs when the roots of your teeth become exposed. This results from many causes, including excessive brushing, overly abrasive toothpaste, teeth grinding, and acids contained in many foods. These causes slowly, but surely, result in the wearing away of the root surface. The same causes often affect the enamel of the adjacent teeth. The enamel becomes thinner and loses its natural curvature. As a result, the teeth appear thin and jagged. Additionally, the affected teeth and root become sensitive to hot or cold.

What can the dentist do about this? At the office of Dr. Helen Chiu, DMD, PA, they frequently place a thin veneered layer of composite bonding over the thin root and enamel. This procedure can be performed without drilling away any healthy tooth structure. The veneer will restore your smile and help prevent further loss of root structure and enamel. This is a very conservative treatment, but it is an effective way to address dental erosions and recessions. Imagine being able to confidently smile again. There are also ways to minimize recession and erosion. First, you must visit the dentist every six months for preventive care. Second, after consuming acidic beverages (such as coffee, tea or soda) or acidic foods (such as fruit, balsamic vinegar or tomato sauce), rinse your mouth with water. Your teeth will remineralize in a matter of minutes after rinsing. If you grind your teeth at night, it is best to wear a night guard. Lastly, brush your teeth gently and do not use a hard toothbrush.

Safe and Healthy Ears By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
F
or more than 36 years, Summit Hearing Aid Center LLC has provided hearing health care services to area residents. While hearing devices have improved significantly over the years with technological advances, Summit’s commitment to providing the highest quality of patient care has remained steadfast. Leslie Herman, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology, explains that the newest devices may have added safety components. With summer approaching, avid swimmers may use colorful, floatable, and custommade earplugs to prevent water from getting into the ears. Also, another similarly-made earplug has an added membrane for conversation. Some hearing aids are equipped with a feature for maintaining balance. A specific device within the hearing aid notifies emergency personnel when patients fall. “Ears are the key to health,” says Dr. Herman. “Keeping abreast of latest technological advancements and enhancements to hearing devices ensures that we deliver the quality of care that our patients expect.”

Dr. Alexis Parcells Answers Questions Regarding BIA-ALCL
T
here has been a lot of recent media attention regarding the risk of a certain type of cancer associated with breast implants, known as Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). We reached out to Dr. Alexis Parcells, a Plastic Surgeon specializing in Breast Reconstruction and Aesthetics, to answer the following questions regarding this condition.
What is BIA-ALCL? BIA- ALCL is not breast cancer. Rather, it is a rare type of lymphoma that has been predominately found in women with textured (as opposed to smooth) silicone breast implants. The FDA estimates that there are 5 million to 10 million women worldwide who have breast implants. As of November 2018, there have been 626 confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL reported worldwide. If you are unsure if you have a smooth or textured breast implant, ask your plastic surgeon.
How would a patient know if she has BIA-ALCL? How is it diagnosed? Asymptomatic women without breast changes do not require more than routine mammograms and breast exams. The most common symptom reported is usually swelling of the breast, often caused by fluid building around the implant. Other symptoms include pain, lumps, and asymmetry between breasts. The fluid may be seen on ultrasound and a sample can be tested in a laboratory to confirm the diagnosis.
How is BIA-ALCL treated? The recommended treatment is removal of the breast implant and the surrounding scar tissue layer, or capsule. Additional treatment may be necessary.
Should patients have their implants removed because of BIA-ALCL? Currently, neither the FDA nor any Plastic Surgery society recommends that women should preventatively remove textured breast implants to prevent BIA-ALCL. This is not a disease of breast tissue, rather it is related to the texturing of the implant device. Case reports of the same disease have recently been described in textured gluteal implants. However, there are women who have been concerned enough about BIA-ALCL and have chosen to have their implants removed. There are some women who were already considering a breast implant revision, and the BIA-ALCL issue gave them one more reason to decide to proceed.
Dr. Alexis Parcells
Where can I find additional information and resources about BIA-ALCL? For the most up-to-date information regarding this condition, I suggest visiting the following websites: • American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS): smartbeautyguide.com/procedures/breast/breast-augmentation • American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS): plasticsurgery.org/ cosmetic-procedures/breast-augmentation/safety • FDA: www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ ImplantsandProsthetics/BreastImplants/ucm259296.htm

o time? Feeling overwhelmed? Have to balance everything...family, business, checkbook? Seems to be a popular challenge. Not enough time in the day. I’m not going to give you the normal list of 3, 5 or 10 things to do to manage your time and increase the quality of each day. There are so many ways to address this and I just don’t have enough
you are dangling as the string becomes the line directly down through your spine to your feet. And then just breathe deeply in through your nose, out through your mouth. Just concentrate on your breathing. For 10 minutes each day. Do not think. Just concentrate on your breathing. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years.

room. I just want to share one idea that will take a minimum of 10 minutes out of your day. One idea. 10 minutes. Having multiple projects that sometimes overwhelm my actions to the point I am not productive, and my thinking becomes scattered, I have used this simple method to clear the mind. What happens? You begin to get an overflow of new ideas, clarity on frustrating projects that need answers, a calming effect that grounds you, and a renewed energy that I can’t explain. Still waters run deep, and the
mind settles to its natural state. Then you come back with a rested mind and body ready to work.
Barry Farber
There’s an old story of a lumberjack competition where the younger lumberjack thought he would be the winner based upon how many trees he was cutting down and how many breaks his competitor was taking. When shocked at the end of the competition because he lost, the younger man turned to the winner and asked, “How can this be? I heard you taking breaks every hour while I worked continuously. I am younger and stronger than you. How could you possibly have beat me?” The older man smiled and said, “Son, I was not stopping to rest. I was stopping to sharpen my axe.” I want to thank the readers for all your support over the years with your letters and feedback on the impact it’s made in your life. The most recent letter came from Kimberly who inspired this Diamond Minds column.
