NCJW/Essex Launches “Carpool Conversations”

H

ave you ever been caught unprepared for the questions your children ask or wondered what they talk about when they think you’re not listening? The newest NCJW/Essex project, Carpool Conversations, aims to provide parents with the tools necessary to engage in conversations with their children about difficult and sensitive topics –before they face issues – allowing them to grow up strong, kind and safe. The project’s launch event will take place on Thursday April 4, 2019 from 10:30am-12 at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Short Hills, NJ. Carpool Conversations arose out of an NCJW/Essex production of SLUT: The Play in 2017, a provocative drama that sparked a conversation about consent, sexism and sexual violence as well as how to parent children in a particularly challenging environment influenced by social media. Acknowledging that conversations often start when parents are taking their children to and from activities, when they are not expecting or prepared for them to happen, NCJW/Essex created Carpool Conversations as an opportunity to help educate parents on how to navigate through these sensitive conversations with their children.

The launch of Carpool Conversations will include a panel of local experts: Donna Ellenbogen, M.S. Ed., LCSW, Jacqueline Mesnik, PhD, Andrea Sherman, LCSW, and Abby Silverman, MD. With their unique perspectives, they will provide parents with the tools to engage in important conversations with their children as well as educate attendees on sensitive topics so they have a better understanding on how to address them in a discussion. The goal of Carpool Conversations is to breakdown walls between parents and children and open up opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Following the launch event, NCJW/Essex will continue Carpool Conversations with small group discussions facilitated by professionals in private homes or at the NCJW/ Essex office about such topics as consent, sexuality explicit material, social media, body image and gender expectations. The fee to attend the Carpool Conversations launch is $10 for NCJW/Essex members and $15 for nonmembers. For more information or to register, please call (973) 740-0588 or visit www.ncjwessex.org.

Decorate for Spring Events with Debbie’s Designs By Jackie Schatell

I

t is no surprise that spring is a popular time to host events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet 16’s, corporate events, and milestone events. The snow is gone, temperatures are warmer and spring flowers are in bloom. It is also the time when country clubs re-open and party venues are in high demand. Orhan Oncul, who owns East Hanover-based Debbie’s Designs— a one-stop-shop industry leader in event planning, design and production for distinctive social events—says he loves planning spring events where he can use blooming branches such as Cherry Blossoms, and peonies in centerpieces and arches. “We help those planning parties save money and avoid the frustration of working with multiple vendors,” says Oncul. “Clients work directly with us on everything from decorations, furniture and florals to custom graphics, lighting and more.” According to Oncul, this spring we will see themes based on pastel colors like pinks, peaches and yellows, with beautiful greeneries. Teen bar/bat mitzvah party lounges will be bursting with lights, blown up photos, logos and taglines. Oncul also says he expects to see a lot of outdoor parties. “When the weather allows, we will start taking parties outside where we can change up the scenery and backgrounds and

move around plants and flowers,” says Oncul. “We will also do outdoor photo pre-shoots as well as wedding after parties, comprising of acoustic guitars, marshmallow roasting, and a sprinkling of lights overhead.” “Spring is a beautiful time of year to create one-of-a-kind unforgettable moments,” says Oncul.

LIVING THE DREAM:

The BOLL & BRANCH Flagship Store at Short Hills Embodies a Peaceful Night’s Sleep Feeling is Believing at This Fair-Trade Certified, Luxury Home Goods Store By Jessica Schiffenhaus Photos courtesy of Boll & Branch

22

Vicinity Magazine

I

f you haven’t already heard of Boll & Branch, it’s the fiveyear-old brand taking the sleep industry by storm with its luxurious, fair-trade certified, 100% organic cotton sheets that deliver all the bang at a very reasonable buck. And now, the once online-only brand is located just around the corner—at Boll & Branch’s new flagship store in the Mall at Short Hills. At the heart of the company are Scott and Missy Tannen— Chatham, NJ residents—who started their journey with a very simple quest: finding the best quality sheets. As it turned out, the solution was to make their own. “Once we found out that thread count didn’t define the quality of a sheet, we spent months researching, trying to find out what really made the best sheets,” said Missy. “We realized not only was there a better way to communicate the best sheets to customers—there was also a better way to manufacture and farm the materials.”

April 2019

One of the most important qualities about Boll & Branch is its mission. “We decided to make a really high-quality product in the most ethical way possible,” said Scott. Boll & Branch has a completely transparent supply chain, and all its products are Fair Trade certified. This ensures that the organic cotton farmers and factory workers in India are working in safe conditions and making above a living wage—improving the quality of life for thousands of people. Fast forward five years, and Boll & Branch is thriving. “There’s nothing that gives us as a company more pride than knowing we can have a successful retail store right in our own backyard,” said Missy. “We can jump in the car and interact with customers and hear their reactions of new product launches,” added Scott. Boll & Branch now offers ‘the whole package’ in addition to its sheets. Customers can cozy up in cable-knit throws, deck their beds in stylish pillows, and indulge in airy duvets. But, in this writer’s opinion, the most stand-out new addition to the line is the mattress.

“We started getting a lot of different requests from our customers to add a mattress,” said Missy. “And the world didn’t need another foam mattress in a box.” Instead, the world received a made-to-order mattress with layers of supportive, cushiony and cool materials, wrapped in organic cotton for comfort and breathability. One of the mattress’s unique qualities is the layer with thousands of micro-coils, which provide individualized support and prevent motion transfer. Even further, Boll & Branch offers a 100-night guarantee and 10-year warranty, all for the fraction of the price of a comparable mattress. Everything Boll & Branch sells is available to experience in the retail store, which is having a spring sale April 22 to 28. Touch the sheets, lay on the beds, drape yourself in a throw. “Get a chance to feel the product,” said Scott. “It’s that much better.”

Home Pros

The Importance of Controlling Humidity skin and can aggravate conditions like acne and eczema. Chronic dry air can even damage your home, pulling moisture from wood and leading to shifted and cracked walls, doorways and floors.

T

hrough dry winter days and muggy summer nights–there is an ideal humidity level inside your home, every season of the year. Humidity between 30% and 50% is a good number on your humidistat–no matter what temperature you’re targeting with the thermostat. Humidity levels below 30% will leave the air in your home dry and unhealthy, with your family more susceptible to germs and illness, because dry air damages the protective membranes in your nose and throat. Dry air quickly leads to vulnerable

On the other hand, humidity levels over 50% increase the likelihood of unhealthy mold, mildew, and mites growing in your home, and allergies and asthma can be triggered. Again, your house itself is prone to damage from dampness. The good news? You are in control of the humidity level in your home! Central HVAC systems can include humidity features for easy control. Dehumidifiers can be installed in damp areas such as the basement, and a humidifier can keep the air in your bedroom perfect for sleeping every night. However you do it, you should always anticipate the conditions of the season coming up. Don’t wait for a “damp smell” to remind you to maintain your home’s systems.

At Air Group, our maintenance plans eliminate the guesswork and worry from home ownership in every season. With spring and summer around the corner, our cooling system maintenance plans are already in action now. A cooling system maintenance plan keeps your system working at its best. Units like dehumidifiers can also be included in a plan. Let Air Group’s experts change your filters, examine compressors and condensers, and do all the recommended service to prepare your home for the summer months - all scheduled ahead of time, at your convenience. 30% to 50% - those are good numbers to keep on your humidistat. Having Air Group’s telephone number on your cooling system service plan is a great way to get there!

Your One-Stop-Shop for Outdoor Needs By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein

W

ith warm weather finally approaching, it is time to start planning the perfect setup for outdoor fun in the spring and summer. Luckily, Pelican Shops carries high-quality items for every season. The shop is not just a ski or winter gear store–customers can find a wide range of outdoor furniture, hot tubs, grills, pools, and pool supplies. For those with entertaining on their mind in the spring and summer, Pelican has a vast selection of outdoor patio sets in stock and ready for immediate delivery. Says store manager Bruce Sanderson, “The store has a few hundred sets on the floor for customers to choose from.” Whether you prefer cast aluminum, wicker or resin, with or without cushions, they have the one that’s right for your lifestyle. They can also assemble everything beforehand so it’s ready for use upon arrival. “We’re probably the largest patio and hot tub dealer on the East Coast,” says Sanderson. “When people come in here, it’s like a big, adult toy store.”

To relax with family and friends, choose a hot tub to go on your patio or deck. The preferred tubs are more comfortable with a better selection of jets. Sanderson notes that buyers should also look for a purification system that uses ultraviolet light rather than chemicals. To try before you buy, customers can even come in and try out the hot tubs that are up and running–just bring a bathing suit! To round out the summer setup, Pelican also has a large selection of propane and natural gas grills, a line of built-in grills, and charcoal grills for those who like slow cooking or smoking. They carry Weber, Napoleon, Alfresco and other high-quality brands that will last upwards of 15 years, so you can enjoy cooking for many seasons to come. All of Pelican’s sales people are knowledgeable about the products they carry and can guide buyers in finding the right items for their outdoor needs. A wide selection of above ground pools and water sports equipment are also available for outdoor fun. And spring is a great time to shop; they have up to 50% off sales going on now. April 2019

SUMMER CAMP “Summer is a great time to help your child build self-help skills and independence. Large, easy-to-read labels help children easily identify their own clothes when changing and packing up. Children develop a good sense of self when they can take responsibility for their own things.” —Congregation Agudath Israel “Performing Arts programs encourage students to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art and drama can bolster self-esteem and self-confidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly matters...and it’s fun!” —Prime Time Summer Arts, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts “STEM camps open kids to exciting advances in science, technology and engineering through hands-on exploration and experimentation. If a child shows an interest, nurture that flame by picking a supportive environment that promotes learning by doing and celebrates failure.” —International Ivy Summer Enrichment Programs “Theatre Camp provides kids with skills that they can use in the future in all aspects of their life. A class on how to audition not only helps to prepare students for a professional audition, but also trains them how to best present themselves in an interview or when delivering a speech. Improv classes help develop quick thinking skills.” —Musical Theatre Conservatory

> Junior clinics, camps and adult programs offered!

“Have no expectations of where you are going or what is going to happen. Don’t prepare! Do not practice any particular skill set! Purposely travel towards something that is (for this moment) unknown. Coddiwomple is an English Slang word. Look it up and add it to your vocabulary!”

> We are proud to be hosting a series of camps throughout the summer for students age 7-16. > Half Day and Full Day sessions are available.

—Surf and Turf Camp

> A variety of junior clinics are available starting at the age of 6. The golf academy also offers individual lessons for all ages and abilities that are formatted to suit individual student needs.

“Parents can usually tell that their child is ready to try sleepaway camp if their child is asking about it. If they are being pushed by you, they may not be ready. Taking your child on a camp tour will give you a strong sense of their readiness.” —Campus Kids Weekday Sleep-Away Camp

“The most important question parents and children should ask is: What do we want to accomplish this summer? Is there a need to strengthen a specific skill or preview a challenging course? Explore the arts or experience hands-on STEM technologies? Learn a new sport or sharpen critical thinking skills?” —Newark Academy Summer Session

TIPS...

From the Camps Directors Themselves!

“Art Camp at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is the most creative camp around! Campers of all ages are free to use their imaginations and express themselves creatively, all while having fun exploring different art media. The impact of our art camp extends far beyond the summer–studies prove that kids who study art have higher GPAs and SAT scores too!” —Cassandra Demski, Director of Studio School, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey “At camp, children can make new friends, explore the world around them, and learn that “I can” is much more fun than “I can’t.” In a safe environment created just for them, children learn real life skills, develop self-esteem, and gain a sense of independence and community, magic happens. Whether children are playing, exploring nature, conquering new heights, or becoming part of a camp family, they are creating memories and skills that will last a lifetime. Kids don’t remember their best day of television but will remember their best summer ever.” —Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges

“We make learning during the summer a fun and positive experience by building each student’s lessons and work around their individual interests and needs. While kids usually prefer to avoid school during the summer, our students look forward to coming into school each day, because they feel good about the work they are doing.” —Marc Silver, Director of Summer Enrichment Program, Winston Prep “Our exciting camps and clinics are an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of golf by demonstrating simple movements that are easy for juniors to understand. This teaching philosophy allows all of our student to achieve success and gain greater enjoyment for golf at an earlier age. Our PGA Professionals will not only be teaching the basics of putting, chipping, pitching and full swing, but will also instill the integrity and life skills needed to perform The Academy’s goal is to honor the traditions of golf and to pass on the passion for the game. Don’t forget your hat and sun block!” —The Basking Ridge Golf Academy

“Sally Abbott: Recent Work”, A Solo Show of Paintings

M

y paintings are all interpretations of my travels through the lens as I see vistas of land, sea and sky to photograph and then to paint. They tell the story of my own personal observations, and how I translate them onto canvas – the world as I see it,” Chatham painter and world traveler Sally Abbot explained. Her landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes and still life paintings focus on light and textures. The Rooster Series, a fun and whimsical series, is inspired by Andy Warhol’s Elizabeth Taylor series and can be enjoyed as single paintings or hung in groupings.

Ms. Abbott’s work comes from a lifetime of rich art experiences. Studying art at Purdue University, collecting regional art, curating while dealing with NY galleries and museums, serving as a museum board member, fundraising for the arts, science, history and preservation have given a valuable background to evolve into a painter.

Take Charge of Your Child’s A

lthough many children receive a vision screening at school or by their pediatricians, those evaluations aren’t enough to identify vision issues and manage overall vision health. Parents who take a proactive role in their child’s vision health can help identify and correct problems before they impact everyday life. One common issue affecting children is myopia. Better known as nearsightedness, myopia is a condition in which close-up objects appear clear but, at a distance, everything becomes blurry and out of focus. If untreated, over time it can put the eyes at risk for serious vision-threatening conditions including retinal detachment, early cataract development, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Discovery Wellness Center is one of the few dedicated centers for treatment of families and children in the state which accepts most insurance plans. We work with children of all ages, as well as adults, couples and families. Along with our sister center, Discovery Psychotherapy Center, we have trained and licensed therapists with a variety of specializations. Some of our areas of expertise are: • Parenting Skills • ADHD & Neuropsychological Assessments • IEP Planning & Advisement as well as In-School Observations • Art & Play Therapy • Couples & Family Therapy • LGBTQ issues • Trauma with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for Trauma) • EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) • Substance Abuse Therapy • DBT (Dialectic Behavior Therapy) • Sex Addiction Therapy

Vision Health There can be significant short-term impacts, too. Nearly 50 percent of children with myopia experience difficulty in the classroom, and 41 percent of parents with myopic children claim their children struggle with everyday activities, according to a study conducted by MetrixLab on behalf of Essilor of America. However, recognizing those struggles as myopia isn’t always easy. Only 41 percent of parents in the study recognized their children were suffering from myopia. If your child is suffering from myopia, look for symptoms such as squinting to see distant objects, like the board in the classroom; sitting too close to the TV or holding books and tablets close when reading; and experiencing eyestrain or headaches. In addition to monitoring symptoms, you can also take proactive steps to protect your child’s vision health with these tips from Dr. Millicent Knight, a mother, optometrist and senior vice president of customer development for Essilor of America.

Regular comprehensive eye exams are particularly important during childhood when eyes are developing rapidly. The American Optometric Association recommends a first eye examination at 6-12 months of age, at least once between ages 3-5 then at least annually between ages 6-18.

Monitor Screen Time

While technology can be a great tool for learning, all that screen time can lead to digital eyestrain, resulting in tired eyes, headaches, itchy eyes, blurred vision and increased sensitivity to light. To help reduce eyestrain, have children take periodic breaks while using devices and remember to strike a balance between screen time and outdoor time, as studies have shown that kids who play outside may be at a reduced risk of developing vision issues.

Protect Eyes From the Sun

Parents tend to remember sunscreen when children are outdoors, but they sometimes forget eyes are just as important. Children are at heightened risk for retinal damage when outdoors because their pupils, compared to adults, are larger outdoors and the lens inside the eye is clearer, which enables more harmful blue light from the sun to enter into the eye. Encourage kids to stay inside during the sun’s peak hours, and when they do go outside, have them wear sunglasses with both blue light protection and UV protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

ith one photograph, you are transported to a distinct moment that is forever frozen in time. You instantly remember how it felt when your child would slowly fall asleep in your arms. You remember the sound of giggles and little feet pattering down the hallway. The seemingly mundane moments from years gone suddenly have new meaning. Portraits have the unique power to connect us to who we were, who we are and who we hope to become. They lead us to a connected life filled with purpose, discovery and joy.

These are the moments we live for. These are the moments we celebrate. Whether it’s an imminent birth, a pending retirement, or any day in between, every day there’s something to celebrate.

Diamond Minds

When Faith Meets Fear the first time in the beginning of her career she was in Barry Farber front of a handful of drunken patrons at three in the morning. Those times were difficult, but she faced her fears and went on. Not only did she put the worst behind her, she learned something every time she stepped up to that microphone.

“Fear came knocking at the door, faith answered and no one was there.”

realize it’s the reason we start to believe the excuses we make for ourselves. Therefore, the first step in taming any fear is to analyze what is real and what is not. Then dive in and take action.

I

In order to take action, we have to learn to get rid of our fear of failure. Author Tom Peters tells about how he had the privilege of introducing the late Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, when he was going to be introduced into the sales and marketing executives Hall of Fame.

This is made even more interesting by the fact that Alexander’s armies were always outnumbered, sometimes by as much as twenty to one. But Alexander’s philosophy was to attack so swiftly and move so quickly that his soldiers didn’t have time to be afraid. He knew that fear is the greatest obstacle to success. The more we think about all the possible reasons something won’t work out, the more our fear paralyzes us, and we end up not taking any action at all.

“What can you say in two minutes about a guy like Walton?” says Peters. “During that time, I called David Glass, CEO of Walmart. I said, ‘If you had 90 seconds to say something about Sam Walton, what would you say?’ Quicker than a wink, he answered, ‘Sam Walton is not afraid to fail. He’ll give something a try, he’ll make a total mess of it, and walk back in tomorrow with a smile on his face and another idea.’ It’s that ability to try something, make a mess of it, and get on with the “All great masters are chiefly distinguished next action that allows us to win out over fear.” by the power of adding a second, a third,

t took Alexander the Great 10 years– from the time he was 23 to his death at age of 33–to conquer most of the known world. Alexander has been studied and admired throughout the centuries for his incredible willingness and ability to take action in the face of adversity.

Fear blocks more people from achieving their goals. It is the anticipation of negative results, imagination working overtime. People are afraid of failing, afraid they will make a mistake, afraid they will look foolish. Many times, what we’re afraid of isn’t even real. You could look at the acronym F.E.A.R., which stands for False Evidence Appearing Real, and

What we don’t think about is that there’s only one first time. Once you take an action, it could never be quite as scary or difficult again. Comedian Rita Rudner told me when she got up on stage for

Every time we step up to try something we’ve never done before, we learn more than we expect. The uniqueness of the experience gives us insights we could never get except by taking an action. Why is it that children are such quick learners? It’s because everything is new to them. They’re experiencing everything for the first time. When we venture out into new worlds, we open our minds and our senses to things we might never otherwise experience. Our knowledge of the world expands tremendously with each new step we take.

and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man has taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance immensely the value of your first.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
