Junior League of the Oranges and Shorthills (JLOSH) Host Little Black Dress Event

T

wo hundred women came out to the Hilton Shorts Hills on Friday, February 28, 2014 to mix, mingle, try their luck at the raffle and auction, laugh, dance and celebrate. The evening featured signature cocktails, delicious passed hors d’oeuvres and food stations along with a dessert candy bar. Together with generous support from corporate sponsors, local retailers, and community members, the event raised over $20,000, which will support the Junior League’s charitable programs aiding women and children in need. “The funds raised will enable us to continue our tradition of developing the potential of women and improving the lives of women and children in our community,” said JLOSH President Sara D’Andrea. The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills is an organization of women developed as civic and community leaders creating lasting community impact. JLOSH provides service to East Orange, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Orange, Short Hills, South Orange, Springfield and West Orange, and reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins. “Taste of Summit” Celebrates 27 Years

Chatham Students Shave Heads to Raise Funds

he event to benefit the all-volunteer Summit Historical Society will be held Sunday, April 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Grand Summit Hotel, 570 Springfield Ave. in Summit.

group of students from St. Patrick School in Chatham made good on their promise and shaved their heads on March 14 at Charley’s Aunt in Chatham. The event was held to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help fund childhood cancer research.

T

Guests will enjoy sample-size portions of chef specialties ranging from pasta and seafood to salads, pizza and sandwiches. Desserts are also highlighted. “The response from Summit restaurants and store owners has been fantastic, and we are so grateful to them for their support,” said Patrica E. Meola, president of the historical society. The Summit Historical Society has as its museum and headquarters the Carter House, built in 1741 and moved to 90 Butler Parkway in the 1980s to save it from demolition. It houses archives that include maps, photographs, newspapers, postcards, Summit High School yearbooks, city directories, costumes and antiques. For details, call the historical society at 908-277-1747 or visit www.summitnj history.org.

A

Thirty-two students, which included the fifth-grade basketball team, fifth-grader Josh Fernandez, who is battling his own long term illness, as well as a very brave girl, Erin Vostal, shaved their heads, raising more than $52,000 for St. Baldrick’s. The students accepted donations on their team pages, passed a hat at the event and held a dress-down day at school where students paid to wear street clothes instead of uniforms. The project was started last year by brothers Drew (‘12), Joey and Christian Rosowicz, who were originally inspired to shave their head because of their father’s battle with cancer. The brothers shaved their heads again this year. Each St. Baldlrick’s event is unique and gives people the opportunity to have fun while raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. For more information on St Baldrick’s Foundation visit. www.stbaldricks.org.

European Wax Center Melts Away the Winter Blues

A

fter a long, cold and snowy winter, spring has finally arrived. As temperatures climb, the warmer weather encourages us all to shed our long pants and heavy sweaters in favor of capris, skirts and short sleeves. That means more exposed skin, and Annie Lock, owner of the Berkeley Heights European Wax Center (EWC), is preparing her guests to show it off with confidence. “I am a big fan of skin care,” says Lock, who grew up in nearby Chatham and now lives less than three miles from the center, which opened in September 2013. “As a consumer, I have always had a profound interest in skin care and the spa industry. Thankfully, I’ve enjoyed many services over the years, so when I had my first treatment at EWC, I recognized and appreciated the outstanding professionalism, cleanliness, technique and expertise. I was hooked!” After making the decision to open her own EWC, it was a challenge for this first-time business owner to learn what was needed to establish and maintain a successful franchise, but Lock received invaluable training and support from the parent company, which now boasts 530 locations nationwide. “Franchise owners are provided with guidelines and guidance and training so that we have all the tools to run a successful business,” she said. Lock, who is also a full-time pharmaceutical marketing executive in Manhattan, spends as much time as she can, especially on weekends, in the center, which includes six fully-private wax suites in more than 2,000 square feet of space. The Center is staffed by corporate-trained, New Jersey-licensed waxing technicians and Guest Service Associates. “I have a great team; they are phenomenally trained to give guests the ultimate waxing experience,” Lock explains. Open seven days a week, the Center focuses on putting its clients at ease and keeping prices reasonable. “For women, first-time guests enjoy complimentary underarm, bikini line or eyebrow waxing. For men, it’s eyebrow, nose or ears. This

Lillianna Alvarado, Holly Brewer and Cindy Barbakoff (l-r)

gives everyone an opportunity to become familiar with our services. We pride ourselves on providing superior waxing service at an accessible rate for all.” Today, after developing her marketing plan, negotiating her lease and dealing with state building codes, Lock is ready to move on to more enjoyable challenges . “Now I am concentrating on meeting as many people as possible and supporting local events. Berkeley Heights is a great community and very family oriented, bursting with pride and small-town charm. Thankfully, we’ve been embraced by so many in town.” While getting her European Wax Center franchise running smoothly, Lock understands that summer, which may be her busiest time, is around the corner. Not wanting to remain stagnant, she is keeping an open mind to expansion opportunities. “As we grow, we’ll need to attract and retain customer-focused individuals to serve the needs of our guests,” Lock realizes. “I would love to add another wax suite and eventually expand to another franchise. Every day is an adventure, she says.” s

ASK THE EXPERT By Susan Wilinski, photo by Dan Epstein

Getting Beneath the Surface of Face Lifts & Fillers

C

osmetic surgery and procedures have been on the rise and are no longer limited to the rich and famous, especially treatments such as fillers, which are much more accessible to the average person than in years past. Since injections or operations may seem intimidating to many people who want to appear years younger, Dr. Janet Neigel of the Neigel Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in West Orange works hard to ensure a pleasant experience and quick recovery for her patients.

Q: Within the scope of your practice, what do you specialize in? A: I am a board-certified ophthalmologist, therefore I do a

lot of reconstructive work on the eyelids, tear ducts and sockets. I also do cosmetic treatments and surgery and I train other doctors how to use botox and fillers.

Q: In your experience, what do you find are the top concerns of prospective patients? A: Typically patients are concerned with puffy or tired looking

eyes along with loss of volume in the face. Their biggest concern is down time therefore we focus on their main concerns address those first and create a cosmetic treatment plan for them to proceed according to their lifestyle.

Q: What changes have you seen in the field of cosmetic surgery? A: Facelifts are a little different than they were 20 years ago

when everything was pulled back. Now we look at the face in three dimensions. In places where the fat, bone and volume diminish or where the face is caving in, we reinflate the face and get the cheek apple back by contouring with dermal fillers.

Dr. Janet Neigel

Q: Where do you perform your surgical procedures? A: I have a private operating room with the nicest nurses on staff.

Between the OR and the office, I have about a dozen employees, and we want patients to feel like they have received the best service they have ever had.

Q: Do you have a lot of patients who are interested in nonsurgical procedures as well? A: Yes. We do a lot of fillers, lasers and Botox treatments, as well

as “lunchtime treatments” where you come in, have it done and go back to work and no one knows you had anything done. Fillers are instant gratification. We can put them in and you can see instantly how you look. Most fillers last six months to one year, but there are new products that can last up to two years.

Q: Do patients have to repeat surgical procedures? A: Not if they are done right the first time. Sometimes, patients

will come back after a couple of years not liking the way their upper lids are looking, but it’s really a brow lift that they will end up needing at that point.

HOME & GARDEN Rejuvenate Your Home with Paint

Your Garden Deserves a Raise! By Amanda Galasso

S

pring is just around the corner, and one of the most relaxing warm-weather activities is to spend time outside gardening. A simple, yet effective, way to garden is by making a “Raised Bed.”

By Rhonda L. Rivera

A

fter the winter that we just endured, everyone’s spirits can use a little lift. Why not start at home? “Paint reinvigorates a room. It gives a fresh, clean look that not only can transform your home, but also renew your soul,” says Amy Wax, custom color consultant, owner of Your Color Source Studio in Montclair, yourcolorsource.com and creator of the “Color911” app. Wax recommends that you paint just your most utilized rooms. That way you’ll get the feeling of having repainted a larger area without being overwhelmed. Also, repurpose a room by using color. Change a pink guest room into an office with earth tones. An uptick in paint sales due to damage caused by leaks and ice damming has been noticed by Richard Digeronimo of Red Star Paint and Decorating in Montclair, redstarpaint.benmoorepaints.com. According to Digeronimo, residents are taking the opportunity to paint whole rooms instead of just doing spot fixes. The most popular colors are tranquil green (JoJoba AF-460*) for living and family rooms and bedrooms, traditional blue (Newburyport Blue HC155*) for dining rooms, and a light, sky blue (Breath of Fresh Air 806*) for every room in the house. In addition to these colors, Wilber Vargas of Wilber’s Painting in Maplewood, wilberspainting.com, has been using energetic yellows that reminds his clients of the lively outdoors. Accent colors such as aqua, lavender and coral complement the new wall tints perfectly.

Think of a raised bed as your garden on a platform. By mounding or surrounding soil with pressure-treated wood or concrete blocks, raised bed gardens allow you to grow more in less space. In such a configuration, plants cover the entire surface of the beds, allowing gardeners to work from the paths. The plants’ roots grow straight down, as opposed to spreading out in search of moisture and nutrients. Vegetables (and other plants and flowers) thrive in the deep, loose and fertile soil. Some of the many benefits of raised beds include:

Vicinity Magazine

Easier for those with limited mobility. Since raised beds are higher off the ground, kneeling and bending to tend is reduced, which relieves pressure on joints and your back.

Less watering. The soil doesn’t become compacted and result in runoff, since walking is limited to the paths. Instead, water is absorbed directly, and moisture is retained for a longer period of time.

If raised bed gardening sounds right for you or for more information, design ideas and supplies, check out:

Pest control. For example, slugs and snails are prevented from infiltrating the beds. Burrowing rodents are discouraged with a low fence surrounding the bed.

Given the harsh winter we just experienced, what should we be doing to take care of our lawns during April? First and foremost, be patient. Your lawn may not look its best during the early part of the Spring, as it may take a little bit longer to come out of dormancy. If areas appear to be matted down, you should lightly rake them to promote oxygen circulation. Do not get carried away with mechanical dethatching, as this could cause permanent injury to your susceptible turf. If you do have any winter kill feel free to spot seed with a perennial rye grass blend, but be prepared for your new grass to struggle when temperatures heat up. It will also be likely that any damaged areas may fill in with crabgrass because there is nothing to compete with it. With some TLC, your lawn will be back to its healthy, green, pre-winter status.”

Aesthetically pleasing. Whether it’s a square, rectangular or circular shaped garden, raised beds keep your garden looking neat and tidy. Weeds also are reduced due to the lack of area to grow.

Health, Beauty & Fitness What’s New in Manicures for Spring? By Rhonda L. Rivera

I

t’s been said that the “Statement Mani” is 2014’s hottest accessory. If you’re confused by what this means, read on!

For the spring, white nails are very popular, as are pastels. Sheer, high-gloss polish is “in,” and so are metallics in every hue from orange to blue, gold and even nude. Stripe details in all colors, mainly verticals, but also in crisscross and diagonal patterns, are a fun addition to your manicure. If you’re daring, add other forms of artistic designs and graphic textures. The “Moon Mani” trend is where a half-moon crescent is painted on the nail bed with the remainder of the nail painted in a different hue. Similarly, ombre manicures, in which the nail starts out painted in one color but then morphs into another color, also are popular.

Getting into Shape Minus the Sweat By Amanda Galasso

D

ue to the natural resistance and buoyancy of water, water aerobics provides a deceptively invigorating and intense workout. The water provides the strength training and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land, with less strain and stress on your muscles, joints and bones. It also forces you to engage more muscles by demanding a larger range of motion than usually applied in land exercises, which results in firming and toning your body from every angle. Simply kicking and cupping the water helps contribute to muscle development, which translates into a higher metabolism and healthier body. Classes are tailored to different fitness levels and styles, so make sure to check out various programs and schedules. For example, the Summit YMCA, www.thesay.org, has classes for a wide range of fitness levels, including specializing in pre-natal water aerobics classes, classes designed for those suffering with arthritis, as well as programs with extremely high intensity. So go ahead—strengthen your body, lose weight, reduce stress and burn calories, all in the pool.

Treating Migraines with Acupuncture By Rhonda L. Rivera

A

cupuncture has been practiced in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years and is becoming mainstream within the United States medical field.

With respect to migraines, relief comes with every treatment session. Just as anti-inflammatory medicines open blood vessels, so too does acupuncture. “The practice increases circulation, releases endorphins and changes the body’s neurotransmitters, thereby relieving pain.” The acupuncturist does not stop with simply relieving the pain, but rather delves further, acting as a detective to discover and correct the trigger that caused the pain. Once the root cause is determined, the patient needs to change his or her lifestyle in order to receive a permanent “cure.” After the initial course of treatment, quarterly “tune ups” may be recommended to keep the patient pain free. For most, migraine pain is reduced, with the help of acupuncture, to an occasional headache.

Baby The Importance of

NEWBORN SCREENINGS By Julie Jacobs

W

e do all that we can to ensure our children grow and develop normally—a monumental responsibility that kicks off as soon as they arrive into the world. With newborns, this responsibility starts with an array of screening tests to check for any genetic, metabolic or developmental disorders before symptoms present themselves. Early detection means treatment sooner than later, often leading to positive outcomes when it comes to a child’s long-term health.

Just a few drops of blood taken from a newborn’s heel are all that are needed for lab testing (heart and hearing screenings use special equipment). The sample typically is taken within the first few days of life before a baby leaves the hospital for home. Required screenings vary from state to state, and some states require repeat screenings. What’s universal and important to keep in mind is that most of the potential conditions are rare and a vast majority of newborns are found to be completely healthy.

The Screening Panel Almost every state screens for more than 30 disorders, which are categorized primarily as either organic acid metabolism disorders (problems metabolizing food); fatty acid oxidation disorders (problems converting fat into energy); amino acid metabolism disorders (problems processing amino acids); or hemoglobin disorders (problems involving red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body). Following are some of the most widely screened conditions: • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia refers to a group of inherited disorders that involve insufficient hormone production by the adrenal glands, which regulate many vital body processes. Hormone supplements can manage the condition. • Congenital Hypothyroidism is diagnosed when newborns do not produce enough thyroid hormone, a chemical substance necessary for managing metabolism and growth. Thyroid hormone taken orally can promote normal development. • Galactosemia occurs when there is a deficiency in the enzyme required to convert the simple sugar galactose into glucose, so the body can use it. Dairy products typically are eliminated from the diet to prevent excess galactose and its associated health problems. • MCAD (medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase) Deficiency is a fatty acid oxidation disorder that can trigger hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and in turn negatively affect growth and development. Nutritional guidance and adherence to a prescribed diet can help kids live normal lives.

• Tyrosinemia is characterized by high levels of tyrosine, an amino acid that synthesizes proteins. The body’s inability to process tyrosine can lead to language and liver troubles, but early intervention appears to stem problems. Newborns are also screened for hearing impairment and heart conditions. A hearing screening involves placing a tiny speaker in a newborn’s ear to see how the baby reacts to sound. A heart screening uses pulse oximetry via a sensor attached to the finger or foot to measure the oxygen level in a baby’s blood to evaluate cardiac function.

When the Results Are In

• Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited condition in which the body is unable to break down an amino acid called phenylalanine. This buildup can lead to delayed mental skills, but fortunately can be treated through diet.

While most newborn screenings come back negative, the rare instances when they don’t may not necessarily be reason to worry. In such cases, your doctor would order diagnostic tests for more definitive information. When these tests uncover abnormalities, you and your baby would be referred to a specialist for more comprehensive evaluation, followed by treatment and ongoing medical supervision.

• Sickle Cell Disease, a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to form abnormally, can result in episodic pain, bacterial infections and organ damage. When it’s detected early at birth, however, antibiotic treatment can be started immediately to help keep symptoms at bay.

If you have a family history of certain inherited disorders that are not included in the routine screening panel, ask that your baby be checked for them as well. By staying informed and being proactive, you can help promote a healthy life for your child.

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber

With Change Comes

OPPORTUNITY T

here is nothing more constant than change. It’s happening all around us, everyday, all of the time. Yet, why is it that so many people fear change? One of the biggest reasons is we get comfortable in the way we’re doing things. Then when something takes us out of our comfort zone—loss of job, moving to a new town, our business and customers needs change—we feel uncomfortable because we’re going through some difficulty adjusting. One of my favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill, “A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.” There is always something valuable that can be derived out of difficulty, adversity or change. We just have to look for it with open minds. Here are three ways to embrace change and have it work for us to elevate ourselves to a higher level of achievement.

1

LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY

If we are not learning every day we are not just standing still in life, we are moving backwards. Learning new information motivates us and gives us a foundation of knowledge that can be applied to the changes we face. Even just 15 minutes a day devoted to reading books, magazines

or any material that elevates our thinking in different directions will help us take advantage of the changes taking place in our lives.

2

TAKE SMALLER STEPS

Our approach to change doesn’t have to happen all at once. If you’re changing your diet, exercise plan or business plan, try breaking it down to more manageable steps. Don’t try to do everything at once and then become overwhelmed and discouraged. Remember, by the mile it’s a trial, by the yard it’s hard, but by the inch— it’s a cinch. When you break it down into smaller steps and those steps are easier to accomplish, it helps build your confidence to continue. Success breeds success.

Barry Farber

3

BE ADAPTABLE

In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what’s soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When changes come your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities. Charles Darwin said, “It’s not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change.” It wasn’t until late in life that I became a voracious reader. There are certain books I keep reading over and over during the year. What I’ve found is that every time I do this I find new and valuable information that has not appeared in the last read. Either I’m losing my memory or the changes I’m experiencing over time allow me to interpret this information in an entirely new way. It reminds me to throw myself into new and challenging experiences on a constant basis. It seems to be that the secret to change is to focus on the opportunities on a new path, not the comfort of a worn trail.

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and land more deals.
