hatham rising senior Madeline Crawford is using her Girl Scout Gold Award project to make a lasting impact—both for people with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness. Passionate about volunteerism, Madeline created events where individuals with disabilities assembled hygiene kits for Bridges Outreach, which distributed them to people in need in Newark and Irvington. So far, more than 700 kits have been created and donated.
She also organized a “Color A Smile” activity at Arc Morris, where participants colored cheerful pages that will be sent to seniors, Meals on Wheels recipients, and military troops.
“It felt good to provide a meaningful experience while helping others,” said Madeline, who’s volunteered with the disabled community since freshman year. “I’ve always loved giving back.”
Maplewood author Morgan Baden’s newest book, Famous Anonymous, hits shelves on September 9. A fast-paced and funny middle grade novel for readers ages 8–12, the story follows two sets of siblings who, while in costumes, secretly post a video that goes viral. Suddenly, they’re social media sensations, but no one knows who they are… and they’re not allowed to be online in the first place.
As their secret fame grows, so does the risk of being caught by their parents and some nosy neighborhood villains.
“It’s about friendship, identity, and how kids navigate the line between online and real life,” says Morgan, who drew inspiration from her time working in social media for Scholastic.
This is her fourth traditionally published book. It’s loosely set in Maplewood, and its sequel, also published by Holiday House, will hit stores next year. Famous Anonymous is available wherever books are sold.
Inspired by her experiences with service and community, she hopes her project encourages others to discover the power of volunteering.
Madeline’s project plan has been approved, and she expects to submit her final Gold Award report this fall.
Inspired by her late fatherin-law’s love of chess and resilience as a Romanian emigrant, children’s author Meredith Rusu’s new picture book, When Auggie Learned to Play Chess (Penguin Random House), hits shelves September 9. The story follows a young boy navigating a new school, who finds connection and confidence through chess—mirroring Rusu’s own son’s experience learning the game from his grandfather during the pandemic.
“This book is about more than chess,” Rusu says. “It’s about courage, connection, and the quiet ways we pass on wisdom.”
To celebrate the launch, Rusu, a New Providence resident, will host a special reading and open-play chess event on Monday, September 15th at the New Providence Memorial Library. Additional signings include the Morristown Festival of Books on October 11 and Watchung Booksellers on October 12.
Rusu, who has written more than 100 children’s books, says this story is especially close to her heart: “It’s a tribute to love, legacy, and making your next move count.”
For Short Hills resident Dr. Gary Sherman, retirement hasn’t meant slowing down, it’s meant giving back. Dr. Sherman serves as cochair of a major fundraising event for Semper Fi & America’s Fund, a national nonprofit that supports injured and ill veterans from all branches of the U.S. military. The organization is renowned for its efficiency, directing nearly $.93 of every dollar directly to veterans’ needs, from adaptive housing and vehicles to medical support and family services.
Dr. Sherman, who was inspired to get involved by close friends in the Marine Corps, has helped raise millions through events held at Hudson Farm Club in Andover and, this fall, at the New York Yacht Club. “It’s an honor to serve those who’ve sacrificed so much,” he said. “Semper Fi changes lives.”
This year marks the fund’s first major dinner event in New York City, and Dr. Sherman hopes to rally local support for the September 25th fundraiser. To attend, visit tinyurl.com/ykc742v2. To learn more, visit thefund.org.
Chatham author Liz Alterman, best known for her thrillers, takes a heartwarming turn in her latest release, Claire Casey’s Had Enough (Severn House), a “mom com” that unfolds over just 13 hours. The novel follows Claire, a 40-something mother stretched thin by the demands of children, an aging parent, and a faltering marriage. When a college reunion rekindles a friendship with an old boyfriend, not “the one who got away” but someone who remembers her youthful dreams, Claire begins an email correspondence that challenges her to reconsider the life she’s built. On a single September day, she must decide whether to meet him in person, a choice that could alter everything. Alongside an unexpected friendship with a neighbor’s witty mother, Claire’s journey becomes one of rediscovery, courage, and reclaiming the woman she used to be. The book is available now in hardcover, ebook, and audio, with a paperback release in late September.
While most girls switched to softball after Little League, Millburn High School senior Alexa Turinsky stayed on the mound—playing hardball with the boys since freshman year. A pitcher, catcher, and second baseman, Alexa has never looked back, proving that baseball isn’t just for boys.
Outside the high school season, Alexa plays for the all-girls New York Wonders travel team, which won the 16U Girls Baseball National Championship last summer. She also helped Team USA earn silver at the 15U Pony League Girls Baseball World Series in the Philippines and has played with the Untamed Baseball boys’ travel team. To stay sharp year-round, Alexa trains in pitching, catching, infield, and hitting.
Now in its fourth year, Alexa’s free annual baseball clinic for local girls ages 7–11 opens for sign-ups each fall via the Millburn-Short Hills Youth Baseball League (MSHYBL).
She’s also a current contender for Sports Illustrated’s Youth Athlete of the Year. Vote through early October at: http://bit.ly/4fof2uG.
Alexa continues to inspire younger girls—one pitch at a time.

IAt just 19, Patrick Ryan of Chatham is redefining leadership, advocacy, and role modeling. Despite facing significant challenges growing up with a disability, Patrick has become a powerful voice for inclusion, using his story and spirit to uplift others and create change.
In June 2023, Patrick delivered his TED Talk, Leveling the Playing Field. Framed around his experience in sports, the talk used teamwork as a metaphor for inclusion, encouraging the audience to “change the game” for people with disabilities by creating opportunities for connection and belonging.
Since then, Patrick has become a regular speaker, lobbying legislators for funding for the New Jersey Children’s System of Care and Medicaid-supported services like PerformCare, which he says were instrumental in his development. He also shared his insights at the Gala for the Reasons to Smile Foundation, which partners with Sorriso Kitchen to provide job training for young adults with disabilities. Patrick, a proud graduate of their program, helps at monthly “Breakfast for Dinner” events, serving guests alongside peers building their first resume-worthy skills thanks to the foundation’s vision.
In 2024, Patrick was honored by the New Jersey School Boards Association as an Unsung Hero of Morris County for his academic achievements, advocacy, and community impact. This recognition was one of many milestones in his journey, which is defined by resilience, heart, and an unwavering belief that everyone deserves a seat at the table.
Patrick has been recognized by both the United States Congress and the New Jersey Senate and General Assembly for his advocacy. Most recently, he was awarded Chatham’s Saint Patrick’s Youth Ministry John Taylor Babbitt Foundation Scholarship for his commitment to living out Christian faith values.
Now enrolled in Cougar Academy, a transition program for young adults ages 18–21, Patrick has interned at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts and the pet supply store Well Bred, gaining hands-on experience in education and retail. He works as an usher at the Mayo Performing Arts Center, building communication and customer service skills. He’s a longtime volunteer at Garden Terrace Nursing Home and an active participant in Bridges Outreach and Help For All organizations delivering food and supplies to underserved communities.
A true athlete, Patrick took a leadership role in Play Unified, a sports program that brings together students with and without disabilities. He’s played baseball, basketball, and flag football, and traveled to Disney to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl. His goal? To show people what’s possible.
This summer, he participated in a 10day pre-college program at The College of New Jersey for young adults with disabilities. He will attend Kean University in the fall.
“I want people to know that having a disability does not mean you can’t drive, play sports, go out on a date, or live independently,” Patrick says. “We have the same dreams as everyone else—we just need a little more help achieving them.”
His mom, Kathleen Ryan, sums it up: “Patrick had significant challenges when he was younger, and he worked so hard. With the support he received, he’s become the best version of himself, and now he’s helping others. We’re blown away by what he’s accomplished.”

FFinding the right volunteer opportunity shouldn’t be a struggle, but for many, it often feels like a time-consuming challenge. Samaritan Scouts, a New Jersey-based nonprofit, is changing that by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to simplify the volunteer search process. By making it easier to discover meaningful opportunities, Samaritan Scouts, which is created and staffed entirely by volunteers, is connecting individuals eager to help with local organizations that need their support.
Co-founded by Millburn native Dvora Inwood and Cornell University student Will Rosenthal of Cranford, Samaritan Scouts emerged after a health challenge forced Dvora to pause her career. With a background in product development and entrepreneurship, Dvora was driven to create a more efficient way for people to find volunteer opportunities. “I wanted to do something meaningful,” she shared. “My kids kept telling me how difficult it was to find volunteering opportunities, and I knew there had to be a better way.”
The solution? An AI-powered search engine that scours nonprofit websites daily, collecting and organizing local volunteer opportunities. Unlike traditional directories that rely on nonprofits to manually submit listings, Samaritan Scouts automates this process, continuously updating its database and making it easier than ever to find volunteer work.
For college students like Edison resident Oshmi Ghosh, who joined Samaritan Scouts just months ago to assist with content marketing and public relations, the platform offers more than just a way to give back; it provides invaluable professional experience. “I was looking for an internship and discovered Samaritan Scouts through NYU’s career network,” Oshmi explained. “It’s been a fulfilling experience, where I’ve not only learned about volunteering but also gained valuable skills in marketing and public relations.”
Samaritan Scouts isn’t just about tech; it’s about people. The organization thrives thanks to the contributions of dedicated interns, many of whom are from New Jersey. This includes Springfield resident Jack Greenwald, a student at Northeastern, and Akash Dubey of Berkeley Heights, a Rutgers student, who both started as volunteers in high school and now intern in full-stack software development. Additionally, Rutgers student and Green Brook resident Andrea Garcia serves as an inbound marketing and social media intern, working alongside Oshmi to improve the platform and spread the word about volunteer opportunities. “We’ve had volunteers from all walks of life, and it’s amazing to see how the community rallies around these causes,” Dvora said.
By focusing on local volunteer activities that enhance the lives of individuals and communities, Samaritan Scouts continues to grow, furthering its mission to engage people in meaningful ways. The start-up is working on adding additional features, such as volunteer sign-up management tools, to assist nonprofits that may lack the resources to streamline their own processes. This focus on making volunteer opportunities easier to find allows individuals to quickly connect with causes they care about, helping them contribute in ways that are impactful and aligned with their skills.
Today, with community engagement more crucial than ever, Samaritan Scouts is transforming the volunteer search. The platform’s unique approach is making it easier for people to find and engage in local volunteer activities that positively impact both individuals and the communities they serve.

FFROM THE TIME HIS NEIGHBOR, A CARPENTER, HIRED HIM AT 14 AS A SUMMER HELPER, TY MONK HAS LOVED MAKING HOUSES LOOK THEIR BEST. IN 2007, HE FOUNDED MONK’S HOME IMPROVEMENTS AND ADDED MORE SERVICES AS HE CONTINUED TO IMPROVE HIS SKILLS. HE ALSO BROUGHT IN HIS BROTHER, TREVOR, AS CO-OWNER IN 2009.
“We maintain houses as well as remodel and upgrade them,” says Ty. “We look at what our customers are asking for and add that to our business plan. It’s literally the reason we opened our showrooms in Morristown and Fanwood. We are doing tons of kitchens and bathrooms, and it was challenging for our customers to pick out their tile from one place, get their plumbing fixtures from another, and their cabinetry and flooring from another.”
Having these choices and more in one place saves a lot of time. Since the showrooms are staffed with talented designers, customers have complimentary professional assistance when making decisions.
Monk’s also has a process to avoid project delays by ensuring all materials are in their warehouse and ready to go before jobs begin. Projects then progress smoothly without any unexpected stoppages.
Their team of highly skilled tradesmen all specialize in their services, so one person will focus on tiling, another on flooring, and yet another on painting. In addition, they have built long-term relationships with many of the plumbers, electricians, and other subcontractors they use to guarantee continuous, high-quality work.
“We made a conscious decision that our niche would be customer service and be above and beyond the best,” he says.
Due to this dedication to service, the business has won many awards, including the Angie’s List Super Service Award and Best of Houzz in customer service, for over ten years in a row.
“I’m very proud of that,” says Ty. “I know the company is a reflection of me, but the awards are also a reflection of our employees and what they put in.”
Lower-level makeover with new built-ins, fireplace, flooring and wall trim
We
made a conscious decision that our niche would be customer service and be above and beyond the best.
Ty is also a big believer in giving back. Over the years, the business has issued scholarships, donated painting services to schools, and served food to people in need. “I grew up in Maplewood and was part of a very active youth group at one of the churches in town. It focused on volunteering, such as visiting people’s homes and fixing them for free. As I got older and life got busier, volunteering became harder. So, bringing it into the company was a way to stay in touch with my roots and be who I am, but do it through a different venue.”
He says the real magic at Monk’s comes from the people involved. “Everybody focuses on giving their best, and we do it as a team.”
246 South Avenue, Fanwood, NJ 1095 Mt. Kemble Avenue, Morristown, NJ 973-348-3160 MonksHomeImprovements.com
Scholarship recipients and Monk’s employees put together 500 breakfast bags in support of nourish.NJ, a Morristown-based organization that “creates lasting solutions to the problems of hunger, homelessness and poverty.”
WWhen it comes to a child’s growth and development, learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings. Extracurricular activities—anything from sports and music lessons to robotics clubs, theater programs, and volunteer work— play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded, confident, and resilient kids.
Extracurriculars give children the opportunity to step outside the routine of academics and explore new passions. Scoring a basket, performing in a recital, or finishing a science project builds a sense of pride and selfconfidence that carries into the classroom and beyond. These activities also nurture essential life skills—time management, leadership, problem-solving, and perseverance—that help prepare kids for future challenges.
Clubs and teams provide an environment where children connect with peers who share similar interests. Whether it’s bonding with teammates on the soccer field, collaborating with fellow debaters, or creating art side by side, kids learn valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and respecting different perspectives. These friendships often extend outside of the activity itself, helping children feel rooted in their community.
Sports, dance, and martial arts offer an active outlet that promotes fitness and lifelong healthy habits. Creative programs—such as painting, drama, and music—provide emotional expression and stress relief. Having an activity outside of schoolwork gives children balance, helping them recharge and find joy in pursuing passions that are uniquely theirs.
Colleges and employers look for more than strong grades— they value leadership, initiative, and a willingness to commit. Participation in extracurriculars demonstrates dedication and discipline, but more importantly, these experiences lay the foundation for children to grow into curious, compassionate, and community-minded adults.
Town recreation departments offer sports leagues from baseball to lacrosse, while community theaters and dance studios nurture creative expression. Local YMCAs and art centers provide structured, supportive environments for children to learn, play, and grow. Volunteering through local charities or school service clubs also allows kids to make a positive impact close to home.
Extracurricular activities are not just “extras.” They are essential experiences that expand a child’s world, strengthen their character, and create memories that last a lifetime. By encouraging participation, parents can give their children opportunities that build skills, confidence, and connections—helping them flourish both now and in the future.
SSeptember marks Library Card SignUp Month, a nationwide campaign reminding communities of the value a library card brings. More than just access to books, a library card is a passport to knowledge, creativity, and connection.
For families, a library card helps foster a love of reading from an early age. Children can explore picture books, attend story times, and take part in after-school programs designed to spark curiosity and imagination. Teens and adults benefit, too, with access to study resources, career development tools, and community events that encourage lifelong learning.
Library Card Sign-Up Month is also a celebration of community. Libraries provide safe, inclusive spaces where neighbors can gather, learn, and share ideas. Whether it’s joining a book club, attending a lecture, or exploring local history archives, the library connects people to each other and to resources they might not otherwise discover.
Signing up for a library card is free, easy, and offers unlimited potential. This September, visit your local library, sign up for a card, and unlock the many resources waiting for you. It’s one small step that opens the door to endless possibilities.

YYou know that thing when you look at a cloud and you see a horse, or a face, or something? You’ve done it. We’ve all done it. It’s a real thing, a psychological phenomenon called Pareidolia. And It’s at the heart of the remarkable paintings of West Orange resident J Steven Patton. Prior to earning a degree in Fine Art from the College of New Jersey, Patton studied privately as a teenager while taking classes in high school. But is often the case, making a living in another discipline took precedence until he retired in 2019 when he returned to a love of painting full time.
His method fascinates. Patton starts with an underpainting of randomly applied paint with no plan other then creating intricately patterned designs. At that point the Pareidolia happens. “Once I discover the outline of the story in the canvas it begins to tell its tale,” he says. It is then that the recognizable images are painted. “I let the canvas speak and guide my hand as I fill the chapters with color. The hues are applied by hand, not brush, making the process even more intimate and authentic.” Using blue shop towels to apply the paint he finishes edges with charcoal or pastels.
We absolutely love the whimsy of The Girl And Two Goats, a 36x36 oil on canvas painted in 2024. He says he started with the curve of the girls back, followed the line, and then found the two goats. We wonder whether they are hers, or has she randomly met them on the road.
It was when we were looking at O! For A Horse With Wings, a 48x48 oil on canvas, painted in 2023, that Patton pointed out that he often turns the underpinned canvases “this way and that way” as he looks for the story in the underpainting to appear. “Typically it starts with one or two things” he says. And in this case it started with the horse. We think it’s remarkable how despite the influence of his unconscious, the images found in the random swirls of underpainting end up as artfully composed images in the final paintings. Or maybe it’s because of it? We love how the horse looks a little sad that it lacks the wings to fly it’s owner across the body of water they face.
Patton’s unconscious and the underpainting has found us a woman in mid-prayer in Lament, 36x36 inch oil on canvas painted in 2023. Is the onion tower behind her suggesting we are in Eastern Europe in a rural village? We can only imagine what has inspired her grief. We love the softness of the countryside and punctuation of the trees.
It seems like every time we look at Patton’s paintings, we find more questions, and more answers. Maybe you will as well. Next time you have a free moment, stop and look at some clouds. We have, and each time we are reminded of Patton and his paintings.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to remind ourselves that silence can be dangerous. Too often, stigma and fear keep people from speaking openly about mental health struggles—yet starting the conversation can save lives.
Depression, anxiety, and overwhelming stress can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. But when people feel they must hide their struggles, they may begin to believe they are truly alone. The truth is, millions share these challenges, and support is available.
Talking about mental health doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking a loved one, “How are you really doing?” or sharing your own experiences so others know it’s okay to speak up. These small acts help break down the barriers of shame and isolation.
If you are struggling, remember—you do not have to suffer in silence. Resources are available 24/7:
• 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Call or text 988 for immediate, confidential help.
• NJ HopeLine (1-855-654-6735) – New Jersey’s 24/7 peer support and suicide prevention hotline.
• Mental Health Association of Essex & Morris – Local counseling, crisis response, and support services. www.mhainspire.org/locations
This September let’s commit to replacing stigma with compassion and silence with support. By listening, checking in, and speaking openly, you can create a culture of hope and healing—one conversation at a time.

TThe lymphatic system moves fluid, filters waste, and supports immunity—it’s your body’s natural drainage and defense system.
When it comes to chronic swelling and fat disorders, lymphedema and lipedema are often misunderstood. Though they may appear similar, they differ significantly in cause, symptoms, and treatment. Recognizing the difference is essential for early diagnosis and proper care.
WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA?
Lymphedema results from damage or dysfunction in the lymphatic system, causing excess fluid (lymph) to collect in tissues, usually in the arms or legs. This can occur due to surgery, radiation, infection, trauma, or genetics.
LYMPHEDEMA
LIPEDEMA
Key Signs:
• Swelling starting in hands or feet
• Skin tightness, heaviness, or thickening
• Higher infection risk in the affected limb
• Common after cancer treatments
• May affect only one limb
Treatment includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), compression garments, elevation, and targeted exercises.
WHAT IS LIPEDEMA?
Lipedema is a chronic fat disorder, affecting mostly women, linked to hormonal and genetic factors. It causes painful, abnormal fat buildup—usually in the hips, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes arms—but not the hands or feet.
Key Signs:
• Symmetrical fat buildup sparing the feet
• Pain, tenderness, and easy bruising
• Lumpy, nodular fat texture
• Disproportionate lower body
• Family history
Treatment may include MLD, compression, lowimpact exercise like Pilates or GYROTONIC®, and, in advanced cases, specialized liposuction.
Lipedema is often mistaken for obesity, and lymphedema may go undetected until advanced. Misdiagnosis delays treatment, worsening symptoms, and emotional distress.
At Providence Health and Fitness, we are trained and certified Manual Lymph Drainage massage therapists and licensed GYROTONIC exercise specialists. We focus on education, early recognition, and personalized movement therapies to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. If you or someone you know experiences unexplained swelling, pain, or body changes, don’t wait. Seek assessment from a knowledgeable medical professional. The right diagnosis is the first step to healing.

TThis month, I’m proud to share some exciting news—the release of the special edition hardcover of The Adventures of Little Billy… In Search of the Magic Tree
This children’s book is more than just a story—it’s the result of decades of research on the core traits every parent hopes to instill in their children. Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing world-class thinkers, business leaders, and inspirational achievers. From thousands of conversations—on radio, television, podcasts, and in person—five universal qualities consistently emerged as the foundation for living a meaningful and successful life.
If you distilled lessons from 14 business and inspirational books, combined with all of those interviews, you’d be left with five essential traits: Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. These are the “5 Secrets” that I believe can help guide children— and adults—toward their best lives. Here are some timeless quotes that capture the heart of each trait and offer us clear reminders of how to live them:
“Catch a passion for helping others, and a richer life will come back to you.”
-William Danforth
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past, nor can we alter the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”
–Charles R. Swindoll
“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”
–Marie Curie
“Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.”
- Ruppert the Toad
“A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.”
– Colin Powell
The wisdom of those who came before us continues to light the path ahead. When we keep these five attributes close—service, attitude, courage, empathy, and determination—we not only elevate ourselves, but we also uplift everyone around us.
And that’s where the real magic begins.
