Bone-on-Bone Knee Pain Does Not Always Mean Knee Replacement BY DR. CHRIS THOMAS, MD, FAAPM&R
B
MEDICAL DIRECTOR, PERFORMANCE ORTHO SOMERSET
“Bone-on-bone” is a phrase many patients hear after a knee X-ray reveals significant loss of joint space. Many assume that replacement surgery is their only option. At Performance Ortho, we have challenged that idea for over 25 years, developing treatment plans that keep patients out of surgery while restoring mobility. Generally, chronic knee pain stems from overuse, inflammation, or stress on nearby tissues. This means two patients with similar X-rays can experience very different symptoms. That’s why treatment should address the whole patient, not just the image. Patients with advanced knee arthritis commonly report pain while walking or resting and difficulty with exercise and daily activities. A professional examination identifies which structures are generating pain and whether non-surgical care could improve quality of life.
FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY: A NON-INVASIVE OPTION FOR CHRONIC KNEE PAIN Focused Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment using high-energy waves to target areas around the knee. It stimulates biological healing linked to circulation and pain reduction, without incisions or medications. Because knee pain is rarely one-dimensional, shockwave therapy may be paired with physical therapy or regenerative options like stem cell therapy.
“A bone-on-bone Dr. Chris Thomas, X-ray doesn’t tell MD, FAAPM&R us everything about a patient’s pain,” says Dr. Thomas. “Our job is to identify every factor and build a plan that may help patients restore function, before assuming surgery is the only path.” WHO MAY BE A CANDIDATE FOR NON-SURGICAL CARE? Non-surgical care should be explored for patients with chronic knee pain who want to stay active and hope to avoid total knee replacement. Candidacy is determined through examination, imaging review, and realistic goal setting. NEXT STEPS If you’ve been told your knee is bone-on-bone, you still have options. Performance Ortho evaluates the full picture to determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate. Writer Receives ArcMorris Media Excellence Award
orristown resident Keith Seminerio has turned his longtime fascination with New Jersey’s stranger side into a book.
New Jersey’s Odd and Forgotten Tales explores obscure stories from across the state, including hauntings, UFOs, eccentric people, unexplained events, true crime and unusual animals. A longtime correspondent for Weird New Jersey, Seminerio intentionally avoided well-known legends, instead seeking quirky stories many readers may never have encountered.

The book grew from years of writing and research, including some pieces previously published in the magazine and many new stories. Seminerio describes it as an eclectic collection with “something for everyone.” New Jersey’s Odd and Forgotten Tales is currently available on Kindle through Amazon, with a print edition planned. For their Girl Scout Silver Award project, eighth-grader Rachel Ellis and fellow Troop 63009 Cadettes Aviana Efraimov, Natalie Tomaich, and Catherine Marcoff created gardening activities for residents at Arbor Terrace in Basking Ridge. They built wheelchair-accessible planters and helped residents plant an indoor herb garden and an outdoor garden filled with basil, green onions, mini peppers, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and marigolds. They also added sensory activities, including a “guess the vegetable” game, after learning that

Curbing Hunger Builds Hope With 11,000 Cans BY JACKIE SCHATELL Bernardsville supplied a truck and manpower to transport the cans, while ShopRite of Little Falls helped provide the precise sizes and colors needed. Construction began June 1 and was completed June 8. Volunteers from Curbing Hunger, local churches, and area high schools worked together during limited hours around the restaurant’s schedule. The sculpture was unveiled during a June 14 reception.
Nearly 11,000 cans of food were used to recreate the historic Washington House for Curbing Hunger’s Can Challenge.
“We wanted to make it more fun, more engaging and involve more of the community,” said Curbing Hunger volunteer Michelle Lesperance. She said the project offered a memorable way to raise awareness about food insecurity and show residents how they could get involved.
For more than 30 years, Curbing Hunger has helped keep local food pantries stocked during times of year when donations are lowest. This summer, the Basking Ridge-based nonprofit found a creative way to raise awareness of food insecurity by building a sculpture of the historic Washington House restaurant from nearly 11,000 cans of food.
Founded in 1995, Curbing Hunger began after leaders at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church recognized that food banks struggled during the summer, when school meals ended, and seasonal giving declined. Its motto, “Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation,” continues to define its mission. The nonprofit has collected and distributed more than 2.1 million pounds of food, with children representing about half of those helped.
The organization’s Can Challenge raised approximately $15,000 through support from businesses and private donors, including Bridgewater Commons and Couch Braunsdorf Insurance. Scandic Builders provided engineering expertise and the location inside Washington House, while Stephen Kowalski of SEK Architects created the sculpture’s detailed, layerby- layer design.
Every can used in the sculpture will be donated to area food banks and pantries, including the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, Franklin Food Bank and Feeding Hands. Through the Can Challenge, Curbing Hunger transformed thousands of individual cans into a powerful example of what a community can accomplish together.
F
From left, Curbing Hunger President Barbara Long, volunteer Michelle Lesperance and board member Marcie Hanhart celebrate the completed Can Challenge sculpture.
Because the finished structure had to resemble the restaurant and remain stable, organizers needed cans in specific sizes and colors. Tuna, sardines, fruits, vegetables and other foods became walls, windows and architectural details. KenRent of

Basking Ridge Mother Refused to Mistake Silence for Inability
W
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
When Madhura Roy’s son Leon was five, she was already hearing predictions about what his future might look like, one focused largely on basic life skills rather than academics. The Basking Ridge mom saw something different. Leon, who is autistic and minimally speaking, couldn’t show others what he knew in the ways they expected. But his mother had watched him closely enough to believe there was far more happening inside than he could express. “I knew in my gut that he was capable of so much more,” she said. That belief changed both of their lives. Madhura eventually began homeschooling Leon and connected with Communication4ALL, the nonprofit founded by autistic non-speaker and advocate Elizabeth Bonker. Through methods that teach non-speakers to communicate by spelling and typing, Leon began learning how to express the thoughts that had been there all along. Under the guidance of Judy Chinitz, the founder of Typing4Communication, Leon learned to answer open-ended questions and have conversations with his mother, something Madhura once could not have imagined. He can even voice the everyday complaints of childhood, like noticing when his four-year-old brother, Ari, gets something he doesn’t.
Pictured: Ari Khedekar, Ajinkya Khedekar, Madhura Roy and Leon Roy attend the Mouth to Hand Nonspeakers’ Gala.
For Madhura, those moments are extraordinary precisely because they are so ordinary. Her experience has also become a mission: helping other families understand that an inability to speak does not necessarily mean an inability to think, understand, or learn. Some autistic non-speakers struggle with apraxia and the motor planning required to control speech or purposeful movement. Communication instruction may begin with a stencil alphabet board, progress to a letter board and keyboard, and eventually allow a person to type independently using an AAC device. Madhura also hopes families searching for answers will discover organizations such as Communication4ALL, which offers free resources and instructional videos to help parents and professionals learn ways to support non-speakers. She wants parents, therapists, and educators to look beyond what a child can outwardly demonstrate and consider what may be waiting beneath the surface. For Leon, being given another way to communicate opened a door.
Madhura Roy works with her son, Leon, as he spells on a letterboard.

Creating a Fall-Friendly Pollinator Garden
W
When summer flowers begin to fade, don’t let the garden lose its color—or its importance to pollinators. In fall, choose plants that give bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects food and shelter as they prepare for the colder months. Choose late-blooming plants that keep pollinators supplied well into autumn. Plant native asters and goldenrod for nectar when many other flowers have finished blooming, and add fall-blooming perennials such as sedum for seasonal interest and a reliable food source. Choose native plants whenever possible, since they are adapted to local growing conditions and often support a wider variety of wildlife. Select a combination that offers blooms at different times throughout the growing season rather than
concentrating everything into spring and summer. Leave some spent flower heads and plant stems standing through winter to provide seeds for birds and shelter for insects. Keep some fallen leaves in garden beds rather than removing every leaf, so they can continue offering valuable habitat. Avoid using pesticides whenever possible, particularly when pollinators are actively visiting plants. Instead, support a healthy garden ecosystem by providing diverse plants and natural habitat. Create a fall pollinator garden that is beautiful, low-maintenance, and beneficial to local wildlife. Choose plants thoughtfully and be patient so your garden can keep supporting nature long after the peak of summer has passed.

Get Your Fireplace Ready for the Season
A
As autumn settles in and temperatures begin to drop, there’s nothing quite like the warmth and ambiance of a crackling fire. Before lighting that first fire of the season, however, it’s important to make sure your fireplace and chimney are clean, safe, and ready to use. Start with a professional chimney inspection and cleaning, particularly if you have a wood-burning fireplace. Creosote, a flammable substance that builds up inside the chimney, can increase the risk
of a chimney fire. A professional can also check for cracks, blockages, or other issues that may affect proper ventilation. Inspect the fireplace itself. Remove old ashes, but leave a thin layer if you use a traditional wood-burning fireplace, as it can help insulate the fire. Check the damper to make sure it opens and closes properly, allowing smoke to exit efficiently. Stock up on properly seasoned firewood before the cold weather arrives.
Adequately dried wood burns more efficiently and produces less smoke and creosote than freshly cut wood. Store it outdoors, elevated off the ground and protected from rain and snow. Finally, review basic fireplace safety. Keep furniture, curtains, rugs, and décor several feet away from the fire, and use a sturdy screen to contain sparks. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working throughout the home.

Organize Your Mudroom for a Clutter-Free Fall
A
As jackets, boots, umbrellas, backpacks, and sports equipment return for the season, take time to organize your mudroom and keep the rest of the home clutter-free. Fall is the perfect time to give this hardworking space some attention and create an entryway that is both practical and welcoming. The key is creating a space where everything has a place. Start with sturdy hooks or pegs for coats, bags, and hats. A bench provides a convenient spot to put on and take off shoes while also offering valuable storage underneath. Baskets or cubbies can keep scarves, gloves, and other small essentials contained and easy to find. Flooring is another important consideration. Because fall weather often means mud and rain, choose durable, easy-to-clean surfaces that can handle wet shoes and heavy traffic. A washable runner or indoor-outdoor mat can add warmth while protecting the floor. Even a small entryway can function as a mini mudroom. A narrow console with baskets underneath, wall-mounted hooks, or a compact storage bench can create an organized drop zone without requiring a dedicated room. For a finishing touch, add fall style with a seasonal wreath, decorative baskets, or a few warm-toned accents. A thoughtfully designed mudroom does more than organize belongings—it creates a smoother transition between the outdoors and your home’s living spaces. When autumn arrives, that little bit of organization can make a big difference.

Warm & Welcoming Fall Entryway Ideas
F
Fall is the perfect opportunity to refresh your entryway and make it feel warm, inviting, and season-ready. With a few simple updates, you can transform even a small entrance into a welcoming autumn retreat. Start with the front door. A seasonal wreath made with dried leaves, branches, berries, or flowers instantly adds fall character. For a more understated look, consider a simple arrangement of natural grasses or an evergreen wreath that can transition into winter.
Inside, create a practical yet attractive landing spot for the items that come with cooler weather. A small bench provides a convenient place to remove shoes, while baskets can hold scarves, gloves, and hats. In addition, hooks or a coat rack keep jackets organized and prevent them from piling up. Layering textures can also make an entryway feel cozier. For example, add a runner in a rich autumn-inspired pattern, a woven basket, or a soft throw. You don’t have to rely on traditional orange and red;
warm neutrals, deep greens, muted golds, and natural wood tones can create a sophisticated seasonal palette. Finally, add a few carefully chosen decorative touches. For instance, a bowl filled with pinecones or a vase of dried flowers can bring the beauty of fall indoors without overwhelming the space. The goal is to create an entryway that looks beautiful while remaining functional. In the end, a welcoming home begins the moment you walk through the door.

AS AN EXPERIENCED REALTOR® WHO HAS CLOSED MORE THAN 1,500 RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES, JAMES CARLTON LONGO HAS SEEN JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING AND SELLING HOMES. HE HAS BEEN THROUGH REAL ESTATE BOOMS, BUSTS, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, INCLUDING COVID.
James reviewing blueprint alterations with homebuilding clients.
Beginning his career immediately after receiving a BA in philosophy (go figure), he elected to give real estate sales a shot, figuring he’d somehow figure out the lay of the land with the right kind of help. Fortunately, he fell in with the right people early on after a couple of bizarre and hysterical bumps. “I like getting to know and engaging with people of all types. I truly cannot recall meeting a prospective client I couldn’t connect with on some meaningful level.”

Six years ago, after nearly a lifetime with Weichert, he decided to partner with Keller Williams Towne Square Realty, with offices in Warren, Basking Ridge, and Bridgewater. The franchise is the world’s largest brokerage with nearly 200,000 agents in five continents. The company’s credo is unusual for a real estate giant. They’re focused on community involvement, one’s personal well-being, family, charity, God, and treating the customer with the utmost respect. “It’s a beautiful company with a beautiful sentiment about how to go about ‘leveling up’ – the process of striving to make oneself incrementally better in every way daily. A goal I endeavor to achieve by tackling the most difficult segments of a given day early on.” James further postulates that Keller Williams offers the cutting-edge technology buyers and sellers require. While tech has transformed the way industry people engage with the buying and selling public, it’s really neat to employ and dispense a cadre of information not easily obtained by internet searches and AI programs.

To maximize a home seller’s net, James believes the property has to shine. He has a team of professionals ready to handle carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, deep cleaning, debris removal, and everything in between before serious home staging. Once prepped for the discerning public, he engages his phenomenal photographer, personally hosts a series of public open houses, creates and publishes web/print advertising, and provides cogent counsel, combined with a ‘drawing in’ of the brokerage community – all part of his extensive brand of service.

Buyers nowadays pretty much select the properties they wish to see. Our expertise begins the moment a buyer expresses interest in a property. – James Carlton Longo Enjoying a funny moment after some big decisions were just made.
When asked about buyers – James says the process with buyers has changed dramatically. He reports home seekers are seemingly online 24/7. “Prior to the web providing real-world updates for new properties and pricing adjustments to existing inventory, we in the industry would be the primary source of the homes a prospective buyer would view; no longer – in fact, the opposite. Buyers nowadays pretty much select the properties they wish to see. Our expertise begins the moment a buyer expresses interest in a property. From this point forward – there are literally hundreds of machinations which take place, often at a dizzying pace.” In addition to being a seasoned real estate professional, managing
broker, instructor, keynote speaker, and mentor to hundreds of agents, James is a musician whose 70’s band opened concerts for the likes of Black Sabbath, Alvin Lee’s Ten Years After, and The Brecker Brothers. Hanging up the grind of playing publicly after COVID, he now opts for ‘structured jam sessions’ with, oddly enough – several other musically talented real estate brokers. James is ‘on’ seven days. He’s an agent with multiple appointments daily who still finds time to work out, golf, ski, and collect and trade luxury timepieces. SENIOR LIVING
Fall Into Wellness:
Simple Ways Seniors Can Stay Active This Season
Move More:
5 Simple Exercises for Older Adults Staying active doesn’t require a gym or complicated equipment. Try these simple exercises to support strength, flexibility, and balance in your daily routine. Chair Stands—Sit in a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slowly stand up without using your hands, then slowly sit back down. Start with 5–10 repetitions and gradually increase. Heel-to-Toe Walk—Stand near a counter or sturdy surface for support. Walk slowly in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other. Try 5–10 steps, turn carefully, and repeat.
A
As summer fades and crisp autumn days arrive, fall offers seniors a chance to stay active, energized, and connected. Regular physical activity supports strength, flexibility, balance, heart health, and overall well-being. The key is finding activities that are enjoyable, manageable, and safe. Take advantage of comfortable fall temperatures with a daily walk. A stroll through the neighborhood, local park, or around a shopping center can provide gentle cardiovascular exercise while offering a chance to enjoy colorful foliage and fresh air. To make it even more enjoyable, walk with a friend or family member. Fall is also a great time to focus on strength and balance. Simple exercises can help maintain muscle strength and stability. If seniors are new to exercise, they should start slowly and consider speaking with their healthcare provider about appropriate activities. Don’t overlook everyday activities. Gardening, raking leaves, dancing, cooking, and even walking while shopping can help keep the body moving. Community and senior centers may also offer exercise classes designed specifically for older adults, including yoga, tai chi, and lowimpact fitness. Staying active benefits more than the body. Exercise can boost mood, reduce stress, improve sleep, and provide valuable opportunities for social interaction. This fall, make movement part of the season. Whether it’s a morning walk, an afternoon class, or simply taking the stairs, small steps can make a meaningful difference in maintaining health, independence, and vitality. Keep moving, and let each choice add up to a stronger, more active season.

Wall Push-Ups—Stand about an arm’s length from a wall and place your palms against it at shoulder height. Bend your elbows to bring your chest toward the wall, then push back. Aim for 8–12 repetitions. Seated Leg Extensions—While sitting in a sturdy chair, straighten one leg until it is as parallel to the floor as comfortably possible. Hold briefly, lower it, and switch legs. Try 8–12 repetitions per leg. Gentle Stretching—Spend 5–10 minutes stretching the legs, shoulders, neck, and back. Move slowly and never bounce or force a stretch.

SENIOR LIVING
The Healing Power of
Pet Therapy for Seniors
P
Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, is a growing trend in senior care that has numerous benefits for elderly individuals. The concept behind pet therapy is simple but powerful: involving animals in the care and treatment of seniors. This therapy can provide emotional support, companionship, and physical activity for older adults, leading to improved overall well-being. For many seniors, feelings of loneliness and isolation can be a daily struggle. Having a pet around, even for a short visit, can help alleviate these feelings and provide a sense of connection. Interacting with animals can also trigger the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress and anxiety. Furthermore, pet therapy can encourage physical activity in seniors. Whether taking a dog for a walk or simply petting a cat, interaction with animals can promote movement and exercise, which is crucial for maintaining mobility and preventing muscle atrophy in older individuals. In addition to the emotional and physical benefits, pet therapy can also have cognitive advantages for seniors with conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The presence of animals can trigger memories and stimulate conversations, providing mental stimulation and engagement for seniors who may otherwise have limited social interaction.

MONARCH BASKING RIDGE: ASSISTED LIVING, MEMORY CARE & RESPITE
A
A senior living community is more than its name on the sign—it is the people, routines, and relationships inside. That continuity remains at the heart of Monarch Basking Ridge, which took over the former Sunrise property on June 1, 2026. The community has 76 units and is licensed for up to 110 residents, offering assisted living, specialized Mosaic memory care, and respite care. Short-term respite stays are available for post-hospital recovery, caregiver relief, or those who want to experience the community before making a longer-term commitment. Residents can choose from studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and companion suites, with kitchenettes, safetyequipped bathrooms, and emergency alert systems. Families are encouraged to bring furniture, photographs and personal belongings to create familiar surroundings. Mosaic accommodates up to 30 residents and provides personalized care for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Programming incorporates residents’ histories and interests through small-group activities, music, movement, and purposeful engagement. Executive Director Kettya Etienne, who began her career at the property as a care manager in 2011, recently returned to find several longtime colleagues still on staff. She says that
continuity helps caregivers know residents well and provide compassionate support. “You can definitely feel the warmth and love in the community,” she said. Residents thrive in a welcoming community that offers licensed nursing support, enriching wellness and fitness programs, chefprepared dining, housekeeping services, and inviting indoor and outdoor spaces to relax, socialize, and stay active. Transportation within a 15-mile radius is included at no additional charge, helping residents reach appointments and remain connected to the surrounding community. SENIOR LIVING
It’s Important to Put Your Wishes in Writing
P
Planning for the future isn’t just about finances or retirement. It’s also about ensuring your wishes are understood if you can’t speak or make decisions for yourself. Putting those wishes in writing can help provide clarity for you and peace of mind for the people you love. Advance care planning lets you document your preferences for medical treatment and identify someone you trust to make health care decisions on your behalf. A living will can outline the types of treatment you would or would not want in certain circumstances, while a health care proxy or durable power of attorney for health care designates someone to speak for you if you cannot. Why is this so important? Family members may not always know exactly what you would want. The National Institute on Aging notes that in one study, loved ones incorrectly predicted nearly one-third of end-of-life decisions. Documenting your wishes—and discussing them with family and your health care proxy—can reduce uncertainty and the emotional burden of making difficult decisions. Putting your wishes in writing also doesn’t mean they are set in stone. Your preferences can change as your circumstances, health, or values change. Experts recommend reviewing advance directives at least annually and after major life events.
Think about what matters most to you, have an honest conversation with those closest to you, choose someone you trust to advocate for you, and make sure the appropriate documents are completed and accessible. Taking these steps now can help ensure your voice is heard later, when you may not be able to speak for yourself.

Living Well at Every Stage: FellowshipLIFE Introduces Palliative Care Services At FellowshipLIFE, we believe every stage of life deserves to be lived with dignity, purpose, and compassion. As part of our commitment to providing a comprehensive continuum of care, we are proud to introduce FellowshipLIFE’s Palliative Care Program, specialized care designed to improve quality of life for individuals living with serious illness while providing meaningful support to their families. Palliative care is often misunderstood as being synonymous with hospice or end-of-life care. In fact, palliative care can be appropriate at any age and at any stage of a serious illness and may be provided alongside curative treatments. Its focus is on relieving symptoms, managing stress, and helping individuals live as fully and comfortably as possible throughout the course of an illness. Our palliative care team partners with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare providers to manage symptoms, support decision-making, and coordinate care. We also help families navigate complex healthcare choices, facilitate advance care planning, and ensure that each care plan reflects the individual’s goals, values, and preferences. Unlike palliative care, hospice care is specifically designed for individuals nearing the end of life, generally when life expectancy is six months or less. FellowshipLIFE offers both palliative and hospice services, allowing individuals and families to access the level of support that best meets their needs at each stage of their care journey. Whether care is provided in a skilled nursing community, assisted living residence, independent living setting, or in the comfort of home throughout New Jersey, our philosophy remains the same: the right care, at the right time, in the right place. The addition of palliative care further strengthens FellowshipLIFE’s mission to transform the aging experience—helping those we serve focus less on illness and more on what matters most: living each day with comfort, purpose, and hope.

In a world that celebrates productivity and constant motion, calm can feel like a luxury reserved for vacations or weekends away. Yet true balance is often built in much smaller increments. Micro-moments of calm—brief, intentional pauses—help reset the nervous system and bring a sense of ease into even the busiest days. A micro-moment might last only 30 seconds or a few minutes. It can be as simple as taking three slow, deep breaths before answering an email, stepping outside to feel the sun on your face, or savoring the first sip of coffee without distraction. In these moments, the body receives a signal that it’s safe to soften, which lowers stress hormones and reduces mental overload. What makes micro-moments so effective is their accessibility. You don’t need special equipment, extra time, or a perfect setting. Because calm can be layered into everyday routines—while waiting in the carpool line, washing dishes, or transitioning between meetings—these moments accumulate over time, creating a noticeable shift in mood, focus, and resilience. To create more micro-moments, start with awareness. Notice when your shoulders tense or your breathing becomes shallow, and use those cues as reminders to pause. Then pair calming habits with things you already do: a stretch before brushing your teeth, a grounding breath every time your phone rings, or a brief gratitude check while walking.

A Sweet Secret to Healthier-Looking Skin
If you’re looking for simple ways to support healthy, radiant skin, some helpful ingredients may already be in your kitchen. Grapes are a delicious addition to a balanced diet and offer nutrients and antioxidants that can help promote skin health from the inside out. One of grapes’ biggest benefits comes from their antioxidant content. Grapes are especially rich in polyphenols, including resveratrol, which help protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Oxidative stress can contribute to premature skin aging, so incorporating antioxidant-rich foods into your diet may help support a healthier-looking complexion. Grapes also contain vitamin C, an important nutrient for collagen production. Collagen helps provide skin with its structure, firmness, and elasticity. Vitamin C also contributes to the skin’s natural ability to protect itself from environmental stressors. Another benefit is hydration. Grapes contain a high percentage of water, making them a refreshing snack that can contribute to overall fluid intake. Staying properly hydrated helps skin maintain its normal moisture balance and can leave it looking fresher and more supple.
Whether enjoyed by the handful, tossed into a salad, blended into a smoothie, or frozen for a refreshing treat, grapes are an easy way to add beneficial nutrients to your everyday diet. While no single food can prevent wrinkles or reverse skin aging, a diet filled with colorful fruits and vegetables can provide the nutrients your skin needs to look and feel its best. Grapes are a simple addition to a skin-friendly routine, and they can help support a healthier-looking complexion.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Healthy After 50:
Essential Screenings for Men
T
Turning 50 is an important milestone and an ideal time to take an active approach to health. While aging brings natural changes, regular screenings can help identify potential concerns early and support sustained health. Heart health should be a top priority. Routine monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of heart disease, which remains a leading health concern for men. Colorectal cancer screening is a further vital preventive measure. Current guidelines generally recommend screening for most adults beginning at age 45. Early detection greatly improves treatment results and can even prevent cancer from developing.
Men over 50 should also discuss prostate health with their health-care providers. Screening decisions should be adapted to individual risk factors, family history, and personal preferences. Vision and hearing exams become increasingly important with age. Detecting changes early can help preserve quality of life, independence, and safety. Bone health is often overlooked among men. Screening for osteoporosis may be recommended for those with certain risk factors, helping reduce the likelihood of fractures later in life. Vaccinations are another key component of healthy aging. Keeping up to date on flu, shingles, pneumonia, and other recommended vaccines can help prevent serious illness.
Finally, don’t underestimate the benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and stress management all contribute to healthy aging. With routine screenings and healthy habits, men can enjoy greater vitality and independence beyond age 50. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screenings and habits that matter most for you.

The Back-to-School Skill No One Talks About
THIS SEPTEMBER, SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH, IS A REMINDER THAT PREVENTION STARTS EARLY, WITH LISTENING SKILLS YOU CAN USE TO MAKE KIDS & TEENS FEEL HEARD
It’s not a new backpack or an app to track homework. The most underrated back-to-school tool is one you have, but may need to hone a bit—the ability to really listen. Every September, families brace for the same familiar chaos: new schedules, social pressures and anxieties about grades, friendships, and fitting in. Parents feel it too, juggling logistics while trying to stay emotionally available. But here’s what often gets lost in the shuffle: when your teenager mumbles “I’m fine” and walks past you into their room it doesn’t have to be a dead end—it can be an opening if you know how to meet it. This is where simple but specific skills of “active listening” become essential. It’s a skill that can be learned and practiced. Crisis counselors on the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are trained to use active listening skills in some of the higheststakes conversations imaginable during moments when someone is in real distress and may not have words for what they’re feeling. The techniques they rely on aren’t complicated, but they are deliberate: 46 | The Best of Somerset County | Fall 2026
• Reframe, don’t redirect. Instead of jumping to advice, like, “Just talk to your teacher” or some other solution, reflect what you heard. A reflection could be “It sounds like the new class schedule is stressing you out.” This tells your child you understand why they are feeling the way they are, without solving anything. • Ask open, not leading, questions. “What was the hardest part of today?” is more likely to get a response than, “Did you have a good day?” Open questions convey genuine curiosity, not an interrogation. • Sit in the silence. Crisis counselors are trained to let pauses breathe instead of rushing to fill them. Kids and teens often need time to find the right words, especially about something they’re embarrassed or scared to admit. • Validate before you solve problems. “It makes sense you’d feel overwhelmed,” lands very differently than, “You’ll be fine, everyone goes through this.” Validation isn’t agreement, it’s acknowledgment of feelings and it can open the door to a real conversation.
None of this requires a psychology degree—just practice, patience, and suppressing the instinct to fix things immediately. For families navigating the stress of a new school year, active listening can be the difference between a kid who shuts down and one who opens up. The payoff extends beyond September. Kids and teens who feel consistently heard at home are more likely to come to their parents when something is seriously wrong— not just about a hard math test, but about the things that keep parents up at night: bullying, mental health struggles, risky decisions. Active listening, practiced early and often, builds the kind of trust that doesn’t evaporate under pressure. “At its heart, listening is how we let someone know they don’t have to carry things alone,” says Mary Claire Givelber, Executive Director of Caring Contact. “When a young person feels truly heard, it can make it easier for them to reach out again when they need support.” Caring Contact, a nonprofit crisis Lifeline and education organization serving central and northern New Jersey, offers
Listening Skills Workshops to schools, workplaces, and community organizations often for free or at low cost. These sessions teach the same core techniques used by trained crisis counselors, adapted for parents, educators, and anyone who wants to have better, more honest conversations with the young people in their lives. If this resonates with you and you’re interested in going further, Caring Contact will begin its next intensive training course for volunteer Crisis Lifeline Listeners on September 15. It’s a meaningful way to turn this skill into service for a community that needs more people who know how to truly listen. And as an added benefit, Caring Contact volunteer Listeners often find these skills strengthen the conversations they have with their own families. Back-to-school season will always come with stress. But how families move through it often comes down to something simple: whether kids feel like someone is actually listening. That’s a skill every parent can build starting today. To book a workshop or volunteer with Caring Contact, a volunteer-powered crisis lifeline and community educator, visit www.caringcontact.org. Fall 2026 | The Best of Somerset County | 47

Courage BY BARRY FARBER
O
One of my favorite quotes on courage is: “The secret to happiness is freedom… And the secret to freedom is courage.” —Thucydides Happiness comes from freedom— freedom to make your own choices, to pursue what truly matters, and to live a life guided by purpose rather than fear. But freedom doesn’t simply arrive on its own. It requires courage. Courage to take risks, to step away from the comfort of the crowd, and to confront fear rather than avoid it. It’s the quiet but powerful decision to move forward even when uncertainty stands in the way. Last month we talked about Bosco the Bear and his secret about keeping a positive attitude and “giving a smile to all you see…” This month we turn to Sheba the Wolf, who represents courage and “being as brave as you can be…”

A positive attitude is important, but without the courage to act—especially when things become difficult—we never get to discover how strong, capable, and resilient we truly are. Courage is what transforms a hopeful mindset into meaningful results. I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t made that difficult phone call, tried that new idea, or stepped into the unknown with a business concept that nobody else understood at the time. Every major turning point in my life came from a moment when fear whispered “don’t,” and courage answered back with “try.” The word courage comes from the Latin cuer, meaning “heart.” At its core, courage is the strength of spirit that allows us to face danger, challenge, or uncertainty instead of shrinking away from it. It does not mean the absence of fear. In fact, those who feel no fear at all can become reckless, careless, and even dangerous to themselves and others. Real courage means knowing fear—feeling it fully—yet choosing to move forward anyway. It’s looking fear in the eyes and saying, “You may slow me down, but you will not stop me.”
Many years ago, I came across an acronym for F.E.A.R.: False Evidence Appearing Real. Most of the time the fear we feel isn’t based on reality—it’s based on the story we think will happen. And that inner voice, if left unchecked, can talk us out of opportunities, growth, and experiences that were meant to shape our lives for the better. Don’t let that voice choose fear over action. When we look back on our lives, we rarely remember the moments when everything felt easy. We remember the moments when we were challenged— when we confronted fear, acted with courage, and discovered something of value within ourselves. These are the stories we pass down to our children and grandchildren so they understand that fear is natural, but allowing fear to dictate our actions is a choice. And in the end, we begin to see the truth behind Thucydides’ words: Happiness comes from the freedom to act—and that freedom is only possible when we find the courage to take the first step. “It’s not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that things are difficult.” –Seneca
