LDiscover the Revolutionary MILD® Treatment for Spinal Stenosis and Arthritis

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common condition caused by age-related changes in the spine. These changes can narrow the spinal canal and place pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to symptoms such as pain, burning, numbness, and tingling that radiate into the legs—especially while standing or walking. Many patients notice relief when leaning forward (like pushing a shopping cart) or sitting down. It is estimated that more than 1 million Americans regularly experience symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis. Common causes include degeneration over time, thickened ligaments, arthritis, and herniated discs.

Dr. Joseph Mejia, a pain management specialist at Performance Ortho, explains: “Lumbar stenosis restricts movement and mobility, significantly affecting quality of life. Without treatment, it can worsen over time, leading to chronic pain and further mobility issues.” Historically, patients have often tried a series of spinal injections to reduce pain and inflammation. While injections may help temporarily, many patients experience reduced benefit over time. When injections fail, patients may be referred for surgical consultation, although many elect to avoid risk of surgery and continue living with the condition.

The MILD® Procedure

The MILD® procedure is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment designed to address the root cause of lumbar stenosis by relieving nerve compression and restoring mobility. Dr. Mejia notes: “By relieving nerve compression through a precise, targeted procedure, MILD® provides lasting relief while preserving spinal stability.”

Benefits of MILD®

• 85% patient satisfaction rate

• Patients can stand 7x longer and walk 16x farther

• 100,000+ procedures performed

• No stitches or implants

• Outpatient procedure (no hospital stay)

• Most patients resume normal activity within days

At Performance Ortho, we focus on advanced, minimally invasive spine care tailored to each patient. If you or a loved one is struggling with lumbar stenosis, contact us today to schedule an appointment and learn if MILD® is right for you. Same-day/ next-day appointments available, no referral needed, and most insurances accepted (including Medicare).

Taking Flight: A Teen’s Early Path to the Pilot’s Seat

Seventeen-year-old Josh Tepperman has already achieved a milestone many adults only dream of: earning his pilot’s license. Josh, who lives in Morris Township, recently completed his flight training in Fairfield after months of intensive study and practice.

Josh’s passion for aviation took flight during the pandemic, sparked by hours spent on Microsoft Flight Simulator and reinforced by flying with a family friend.

Bernardsville Native Finds Community Through Music

He officially began training last January, flying multiple times a week and soloing once he became eligible. Calm and focused in the cockpit, Josh says flying gives him a sense of freedom and clarity.

A junior in High School, Josh balances his aviation goals with academics and leadership. He is active in Civil Air Patrol, where he is currently the only cadet in his unit with a pilot’s license and is stepping into a leadership role overseeing aviation activities for approximately 50 cadets. He also participates in his school’s Aviation Club, which he helped launch last year, and the Computer Science Honor Society.

Josh is already training toward advanced ratings, including instrument flying, and hopes to one day fly for United Airlines.

Bridging the STEM Gap, One Lesson at a Time

Basking Ridge resident Robin Satty has spent her career thinking about the students who are too often left behind.

After eight years teaching middle and high school science in underresourced districts, including Newark, Robin saw a troubling pattern. The students with the greatest needs were often taught by the newest teachers, with the fewest materials and the least

support. Rather than accept that gap, she began working to close it.

Robin is driven by a love of curriculum design and problem solving. She describes it as a puzzle. How to create lessons, labs, and resources that allow students to do meaningful science without ideal conditions.

She is currently developing an accessible, web based biology lesson plan book intended to be available at no cost to schools in need. Satty continues to work with all types of schools seeking to expand STEM opportunities and give both teaches and students the tools to thrive. For more information, visit stemsmartconsulting.com/.

Sarah Aquino’s life moves to a rhythm shaped by family, music, and community. A Bernardsville native, she left New Jersey at 19 to teach English in Paraguay and reconnect with her roots. In 2022, she returned home with her husband, Alejo Jimenez, a native of Argentina, and their two sons, bringing with them a deep love of cultural exchange and a desire to share a piece of South America through music.

A lifelong musician, Sarah performs with Alejo, a guitarist, sound engineer, and music producer, blending Latin American folk, bossa nova, and jazz. Together, they perform as In Your Mind and created a music delivery program, an Uberstyle concept that brings live, intimate performances into homes and backyards. With support from Bernardsville Mayor Mary Jane Canose, they also launched Music on the Benches, offering pop-up performances throughout town.

The duo is also part of a Latin rock band called Rumbaile. They also perform as In Your Mind at local restaurants, private homes, community spaces, and regional events, using music as a bridge between cultures. Follow Sarah on Instagram @inyourmind.livemusic.

Where Children Lead and Creativity Follows in Basking Ridge

Basking Ridge resident Kerry Stockdale believes children learn best through hands-on exploration, which sometimes means painting a television.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, Kerry creates a welcoming environment at Play Learn Connect where children explore unexpected materials like colorful cooked spaghetti and sensory bins of painted chickpeas. They make process art by painting old televisions, car tires, and even repurposed prom dresses. There is no goal for how their work is supposed to look, only the wonderfully unpredictable journey of creating.

experiment without rules or expectations.

“I don’t say one word about what children are supposed to do,” Kerry says. “It’s completely child-led, and the magic is in watching toddlers take control of their own learning.”

Bin to Gallery Wall in Bernardsville

Laura Shabazz is an award-winning, Bernardsville-based artist who transforms discarded pages into vibrant, sustainable collage art through color, texture, and creative problemsolving. Using rescued books and highend glossy magazines, she hand-rips paper into representational, painterly scenes of everyday moments. She “mixes paint” by sorting paper into color-coded drawers, assembling each piece layer by layer.

Collage is a freeing medium for Laura— the imperfections of torn paper quiet the inner critic and invite intuition and

discovery, like solving a jigsaw puzzle with no single right answer.

From January 26–May 1, Laura will exhibit at Kean University’s Nancy Dryfoos Gallery. An artist talk on February 4 at 3:30 p.m. will be followed by a public reception at 5.

Laura sells original art, prints, and more, and is expanding into commercial collaborations. Learn more at laurashabazz.com. To donate materials or inquire about commissions, email laura. shabazz@gmail.com, and follow @LauraShabazz

Creating Community Where Care Falls Short

FFor Warren resident Nicoletta Sozansky, healthcare was never supposed to be her calling. With a background in finance and years spent working with major banks, her path seemed clear, until life intervened in ways she never expected.

In her 30s, Nicoletta began experiencing severe, unexplained symptoms that left her chronically ill and searching for answers. It took nearly eight years of doctor visits, research, and self advocacy before she finally received a diagnosis. While the clarity brought relief, the process exposed a troubling reality. Despite trusting the medical system, she was largely left to navigate it alone.

That experience would shape everything that followed.

Shortly after moving to Warren, Nicoletta faced another life altering moment. During a routine pregnancy anatomy scan, her daughter, Aspen, was diagnosed with a rare congenital birth defect affecting her lungs. The prognosis was frightening. Nicoletta and her family temporarily relocated so her daughter could receive lifesaving surgery at a leading children’s hospital. Against the odds, her daughter survived and today is thriving, though the journey forever changed how Nicoletta viewed patient care.

In both roles, first as a patient, then as a parent, Nicoletta found herself doing the work most people assume doctors guide them through. She researched outcomes, coordinated specialists, compared hospitals, and made high stakes decisions with limited support. She also saw how often patients, especially women

with chronic or invisible illnesses, were dismissed or misunderstood.

Determined to change that, Nicoletta became a Board Certified Patient Advocate and launched Healthcare Redefined, a business dedicated to guiding individuals and families through complex medical decisions. While she does not provide medical advice, she connects clients with trusted resources, helps them ask the right questions, and empowers them to make informed choices, something she once needed herself.

Her advocacy extends beyond individual clients. Nicoletta serves as an advisor to healthcare startups, works closely with children’s hospitals and NICU focused initiatives, and has become a vocal supporter of women’s health issues, including endometriosis, pelvic pain, perimenopause, and mental health.

Now, she is giving back in a new way by launching a resource based circle for healthcare professionals and medical entrepreneurs. The collaborative group is designed to replace transactional networking with trust, shared experience, and honest support. The group will meet virtually to start, with hopes of future in-person gatherings, bringing together physicians, mental health professionals, researchers, and healthcare founders who understand the unique challenges of the field. Nicoletta plans to launch the group virtually, with details to be shared through her professional channels.

For Nicoletta, the goal is simple but powerful. Build community, exchange ideas, and ensure no one has to navigate healthcare or building a healthcare focused business alone.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful change begins not with a plan, but with persistence, empathy, and the decision to help others find their way forward. For details about joining the group, send an email to info@ thehealthcareredefined.com.

Running Beyond the Finish Line

FFor Matt Marino, running has never been just about crossing a finish line. With the Boston Marathon on the horizon this April, the Bernardsville resident is preparing for what will be his 10th marathon and his sixth World Marathon Major, but this race carries deeper meaning than any before it.

Matt will run Boston as a charity athlete for the Webb Norden Foundation, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit founded by survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The organization supports children and young adults who have experienced trauma, helping them process and heal through specialized programming. Matt committed to raising $10,000 to earn his place on the starting line.

His connection to the cause is personal. In 2001, at age 24, Matt witnessed the events of September 11 while working in Newark. The experience left a lasting impact, one that resurfaces even decades later. “Back then, the resources just weren’t there,” he says. “When I learned about a foundation helping young people navigate trauma, it resonated immediately.”

Boston is unique among the world’s major marathons. There is no lottery. Runners must either qualify by time or be selected by a charity, a competitive process that prioritizes personal connection and commitment. Matt was chosen early, a validation of both his story and dedication.

Though he now considers himself a seasoned marathoner, Matt did not grow up running. A former tennis player and later a throwing coach for a school track team, he didn’t take running seriously until his 30s. His first marathon, Philadelphia in 2014, took more than five hours. Today, after recommitting post-pandemic, he regularly finishes just over four hours and is aiming to break that barrier in Boston.

Charity has remained central to his journey. Matt previously ran the London Marathon for Asthma + Lung UK, a cause especially meaningful as he runs with exercise-induced asthma, managing

breathing challenges during training and races. He also ran the Sydney Marathon for Endure to Cure, a pediatric cancer organization he supported after his teenage cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Each cause reflects a deeply personal chapter of his life.

Training in New Jersey’s unpredictable weather requires flexibility, from outdoor park runs to long treadmill sessions. But running, he says, is therapeutic. “Even when I don’t feel like going, I always feel better afterward.” It has also opened doors to travel, friendships, and community, carrying him through Berlin, Chicago, London, Sydney, and New York.

Now an adjunct professor teaching English at Seton Hall University and County College of Morris, Matt approaches running with the same thoughtfulness he brings to the classroom. His goals for Boston are simple: to finish on his own two feet and to honor the cause he represents.

“Every dollar helps,” he says. “This isn’t just about running Boston. It’s about giving something back.” To help Matt reach his $10,000 fundraising goal, visit tinyurl.com/mattrunsboston.

“People trust PulteGroup because our results consistently show our dedication to excellence,” says Kristina Hanley, its vice president of sales. “Our reputation is enhanced by national recognition, such as being named one of Fortune’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’.”

With a range of brands like Pulte Homes, Centex, and Del Webb, the group can serve everyone from first-time buyers to those looking to upgrade, as well as active-adult buyers. W Planning Ahead for Spring Starts Now

Winter is an ideal time for homeowners to begin thinking about outdoor upgrades, and G. DeLuca & Sons is already busy helping clients plan ahead. Led by brothers Frank and Michael DeLuca, the family-owned company specializes in landscaping services, custom outdoor design, masonry, and outdoor construction projects that enhance both beauty and long-term property value.

“Most people don’t start thinking about upgrading their outdoor spaces until the weather warms up,” says Frank DeLuca. “But planning during the colder months helps homeowners avoid scheduling delays, secure better project timelines, and actually enjoy their finished spaces throughout the peak spring and summer seasons instead of waiting until late summer or even the following year.”

Founded in the mid-1980s and expanded under Frank and Michael’s leadership over the past 18 years, G. DeLuca & Sons has grown from a small operation into a full-service business supported by a large team of skilled professionals. Today, the company offers a wide range of services including dumpster rentals, patios, fire pits, front steps, sitting walls, outdoor kitchens, planting, irrigation systems, spring aerating, and fresh mulch installations designed to boost curb appeal.

Much of that work is driven by evolving homeowner preferences. The DeLucas note that trends continue to shift toward creating functional backyard living spaces. Fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and decorative masonry features such as columns and retaining walls are increasingly popular,

while classic projects like front entry upgrades and patios remain in strong demand. Seasonal planting and lawn care services also play a key role, helping landscapes establish strong root systems before summer heat arrives.

Through their nursery and garden center, the team works closely with homeowners to recommend the right plants based on sun exposure, shade conditions, and deer resistance. The company also sources premium materials from trusted partners, ensuring durability and long-lasting results.

What truly distinguishes G. DeLuca & Sons is its commitment to service and communication. Clients are supported by knowledgeable project managers who oversee each job from start to finish, delivering transparency, accountability, and craftsmanship that reflects the company’s family name.

With a reputation built on reliability, quality, and pride in their work, G. DeLuca & Sons continues to help homeowners bring their outdoor visions to life—just in time for the season ahead.

One significant benefit is their ability to save space. Traditional hinged doors require clearance to swing open, which can be limiting in smaller rooms. Pocket doors maximize available square footage, especially in cramped areas like bathrooms and closets.

Available in various styles, materials, and finishes, pocket doors can complement any home decor. Whether you prefer a modern glass slider or a rustic wooden door, they enhance the visual appeal of any room. They can create unique entryways or separate spaces without the bulk of traditional doors.

Pocket doors slide open seamlessly, facilitating movement between rooms, especially in high-traffic areas. They can also create fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces, making gatherings more enjoyable.

While serving as room dividers, pocket doors offer privacy without sacrificing style. When closed, they effectively block noise and visual distractions, providing a haven for relaxation or focused work. They are an excellent option for home offices or guest rooms where privacy is essential.

Lastly, pocket doors can significantly enhance comfort and independence for those who rely on mobility aids, ensuring everyone can move freely throughout the home.

Enhance the Look & Functionality of a Space with Area Rugs

RRugs can help delineate different areas within an open floor plan by defining spaces, such as separating a living room from a dining area or creating a cozy reading nook. They can also add warmth by providing insulation, making a space feel warmer and more inviting, especially in homes with hard flooring like tile or hardwood. Rugs can also absorb sound, reducing echoes and noise levels in a room, which is particularly beneficial in larger spaces.

A well-chosen area rug can serve as a focal point, adding color, texture, and pattern to a room and complementing existing furniture and decor. It can also help protect your flooring from scratches and wear, particularly in high-traffic areas or under furniture. Rugs add a soft surface underfoot, making areas more comfortable, especially in high-traffic zones or play areas for children.

Creating a cozy atmosphere with layers of textures, including area rugs, can make a space feel more intimate and inviting. They can also hide imperfections by cleverly covering up flaws in flooring or helping to conceal stains.

rugs in various colors and styles can visually divide areas while vibrancy to the decor. Rugs can be swapped out with the seasons to refresh a space and match the seasonal decor, allowing for easy transformation without significant changes.

A Career of Caring

Local real estate agent is devoted to helping others

As a nurse, Kelly Peterpaul loved helping people. But, as a mom raising seven children all a year apart, she needed a profession that allowed for more control over her schedule. Her husband, Tony, a real estate attorney, pushed her into taking a real estate class. Her friend, Maria Humbert, who has since passed, also encouraged her to become an agent and join her at Coldwell Banker in Basking Ridge.

(continued on the next page)

A Career of Caring

“I was fearful of becoming a real estate agent because I thought it was all about money, but then I realized it wasn’t,” says Kelly. “The most important thing about the profession is the people and trying to help them with their needs and finding their dream homes.”

Today, 18 years later, her children are grown, and she’s thankful she was able to be there for her family while also having a successful career. Coldwell Banker has also been a great fit for her. “The company is so honest, and I love their policies, “ she says. “They also have great technology that allows us to better assist clients with buying and selling.”

(continued from the previous page)

Kelly is a Certified Rental Agent, a Certified Residential Specialist, and a Luxury Property Specialist. She specializes in residential sales and purchases, residential new construction and real estate development, short sales, new buyers, and residential rentals for landlords and tenants.

She’s also an expert in the local area, having lived in Basking Ridge for 30 years. “If you name the street, I can tell you where it is,” says Kelly. “I know the positives and negatives of each property and location.”

Kelly also knows the locations of all the churches and temples, the best hills for sledding, and the proximity of train stations, restaurants, and highways to a neighborhood. “I also audit schools in Somerset and Morris County, so I know which ones are good,” she says. “I can direct parents to the best preschools and private schools.”

An agent who’s familiar with the area is especially important for clients moving from out of town. They want an agent who can not only help them during the move, but also be a resource afterwards.

“Many of my clients call to ask me for a handyman, an electrician, a plumber, or a painter,” says Kelly. “I recommend three of each, so if one doesn’t work out, they have other options. It could be five years later, and they still contact me.”

Kelly Peterpaul with builder Lou Madden
Kelly Peterpaul showing the house to a client

She believes that being an experienced agent increases clients’ confidence and adds value to the relationship. It’s critical for agents to be extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of real estate so they can educate their clients.

“Inexperienced agents don’t always understand the real estate market and how and why it can go up and down,” says Kelly. “If you’ve been in it for a while, you know how the market’s going to trend, and you can just feel it, especially with the mortgage rates.”

Kelly still uses her nursing experience by providing community care in administering vaccinations and checking blood pressure. “It doesn’t pay well, but I feel like I’m giving back to the community, so I like that,” says Kelly. “I always showed my children how important it is to care about others. Obviously, with such a big family, I devoted a large part of my life to my children and my husband, but a large part is also devoted to other people.”

Many of her clients have become friends, and some are like family, who put a lot of trust in her. “That is the basis of my continued success in the business,” she says.

SUMMER CAMP A Place to Grow, Play, and Build Confidence

SSummer camp has long been a cherished rite of passage, offering children a break from screens, school routines, and indoor living. Whether families choose a traditional sleepaway camp or a local day camp, both experiences provide meaningful benefits that support social, emotional, and physical growth.

Sleepaway camps give children the opportunity to build independence in a supportive environment. Spending time away from home encourages confidence, problem-solving, and responsibility, from managing daily schedules to making new friends. Campers learn to collaborate, communicate, and navigate different personalities — life skills that extend well beyond the summer months. Immersed in nature and group activities, children unplug from digital distractions and reconnect with creativity, curiosity, and outdoor play. Trying new experiences, whether it’s swimming, hiking, performing arts, or team sports, helps campers discover new interests and develop resilience.

Day camps offer many of the same advantages while allowing children to return home each evening. This option is ideal for younger campers or those who thrive on familiar routines. Day camps provide structured schedules filled with physical activity, creative projects, and social interaction, keeping kids engaged and energized throughout the summer. Many programs specialize in sports, STEM, arts, or environmental education, allowing children to explore passions while strengthening skills. Day camps also foster local friendships and community connections, helping children build confidence in their own neighborhoods.

Both types of camps promote healthy habits, teamwork, independence, and self-expression — all while delivering plenty of fun. The choice between sleepaway and day camp ultimately depends on a child’s personality, readiness, and family preferences. No matter the format, summer camp creates lasting memories, nurtures personal growth, and gives children the freedom to explore who they are in a joyful, supportive setting.

JANICE BELOVE

The Wonder of Everyday Moments

LLike so many visual artists, Janice Belove started young. Art lessons from elementary school through high school eventually led her to the Maryland Institute College of Art for a BFA and then to Queens College to get her Master of Fine Arts degree. After college a series of what she smiles when referred to as her “regular jobs” allowed her to paint while she lived in New York City. “If I was drawn to a theme,” she says, “it was illustration.”

1989 found her moving with her husband to Northern NJ and becoming an adjunct Art professor at both the County College of Morris, and Bergen Community College, subsequently accepting a full-time position at a local high school until she retired in 2022 to turn her full attentions to painting and conducting private painting classes in her own studio.

Fishmonger, an 18x24 oil on canvas painted in 2019 exemplifies the illustration approach to her work. A location in San Francisco’s Chinatown in which she confides that some details are invented in this her first attempt working from a photographic reference. “It was the sense of space, the depth from the fish in the foreground through the long narrow room to the window in the back that was interesting.” We love how a mundane moment becomes a festival of interesting details from the figures in the background, the random containers, and the fish waiting to be purchased.

A trip with her husband and sons during the pandemic in 2020 was the inspiration for Road Trip, an 18x24 oil on canvas. Another seemingly ordinary moment in which Belove captures our attention and we become riveted by the scene. How many of us have made one of those long drives while never really noticing how the car becomes full of stuff. The artist has given us a detail rich environment in which we can almost get lost in the elements: luggage, beverage containers, a paperback jammed behind a seat, even a partial view of the backseat occupants. Humorously, she has included a partial view of herself, making the sketch on her iPad that would become a blueprint for the painting.

Belove’s affection for the ordinary moments is nowhere more in view than in Nightime On Abrams Pond, which is a newer work painted entirely on an iPad. She was inspired by David Hockney, and we see his influence both in the technique and style. Another detail rich image; this one of her husband playing the guitar during the evening while at a summer rental. And again, we see her sense of humor including her iPad on the table in the foreground.

Visit her website to see more work. You’ll be captivated by her ability to make ordinary moments nothing short of fascinating.

Break from the Norm — Valentine’s Day Dates Ideas

IIf you’re feeling pressure to plan the perfect Valentine’s Day date, it may be time to veer away from tradition. While flowers, chocolates and dinner for two is a classic, thinking outside the box can make for just as romantic of an experience.

Consider these simple date ideas to reduce stress and make your day extra special.

TAKE A DANCE CLASS

Learning something new together can be a great way to bond with your significant other. Research dance studios in your area and book a lesson for a night out. Many studios offer new or first-time discounts and typically have a variety of lessons available from ballroom to salsa, cha cha and more. If dancing isn’t really your thing, consider another skill-building class you can do together like pottery, cooking or painting, for example.

RECREATE YOUR FIRST DATE

Take a trip down memory lane and go back to the beginning of your relationship by recreating your first – or a favorite – date. Whether you went bowling, mini golfing, to dinner and a movie or something else entirely, reliving the past can be a special way to connect and show your partner how much you care.

PLAN AN INDOOR PICNIC

If it’s too cold outside for an actual picnic, clear some space in your living room and throw down a blanket. Pack a basket of finger foods like sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fruit, a bottle of wine and dessert for a romantic meal for two in the comfort of home.

BOOK A STAYCATION

A getaway doesn’t have to mean going far from home. Become tourists in town by booking a night at a nearby hotel and visiting some local landmarks you’ve been wanting to check out or haven’t experienced in a while. A simple break from routine can make for an enjoyable escape, even if you’re only a few miles from home.

hire a photographer for a couples photo session, and use it as an opportunity to create fun memories together. Many photographers offer mini sessions, which only take 15-30 minutes, leaving time for a night out afterward. For an inexpensive option, have a friend take a few casual pictures or use a selfie stick to help document your date.

COOK DINNER TOGETHER

Restaurants are often booked up on Valentine’s Day, so try something different this year and make a special home-cooked meal together. Whether you make a triedand-true favorite or whip up something new, like a heart-shaped dish, you’ll bond over the experience while creating a tangible (and hopefully tasty) reward once the oven timer dings. Then dim the lights, play some soft music and light some candles to create a romantic ambience while enjoying dinner together.

GO ON A ROAD TRIP

Take a day – or a weekend –and venture to a destination you haven’t been before on a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway. Even if traveling far away isn’t possible right now, exploring a town or two over allows you to check out new restaurants, stores or other attractions and get out of your comfort zones.

HEART HEALTH More Than a Test Result

A CONSUMER-FRIENDLY PERSPECTIVE ON EVERYDAY HEART WELLNESS

FFebruary’s focus on heart health is a reminder that caring for your heart is not something that happens only at an annual checkup or after a concerning test result. Heart health is shaped every day by small choices, daily routines, and how well care is coordinated over time.

Heart disease rarely announces itself all at once, says Dr. Paul Woroch, MD, an internist with decades of experience caring for adults at every stage of life. It develops quietly through patterns such as missed medications, unmanaged stress, reduced physical activity, poor sleep, and gaps in follow-up care.

Many of the most common heart risk factors, including high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol, often cause no obvious symptoms. People may feel well while underlying issues progress silently. By the time warning signs appear, treatment can become more complex. That is why consistent preventive care and an ongoing relationship with a trusted primary care physician matter.

From Dr. Woroch’s perspective, heart health is not about perfection or dramatic lifestyle changes. It is about consistency, clarity, and support. Simple habits practiced over time, combined with regular monitoring and thoughtful care coordination, can significantly reduce risk and improve long-term outcomes.

Heart health should feel empowering, not overwhelming. Many cardiovascular risks remain modifiable well into later life, especially when patients feel supported rather than rushed or confused. Good medicine extends beyond prescriptions and test results. It includes taking the time to understand each person’s life, routines, and goals.

Dr. Paul Woroch, MD is now welcoming new patients at Fellowship Medical Group in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He offers comprehensive internal medicine care with a focus on prevention, chronic condition management, and whole-person wellness. Patients seeking a thoughtful, relationship-based approach to primary care are encouraged to schedule an appointment.

The Power of Community Helping Seniors Stay Connected and Engaged

Growing older does not mean losing connection. In fact, it can open new doors to meaningful friendships, shared interests, and fresh experiences. A strong sense of community empowers older residents to stay active, social, and rooted in their neighborhoods, transforming everyday life into a chance for growth, laughter, and support.

Local senior centers serve as welcoming hubs, offering everything from exercise classes and art workshops to guest speakers and day trips. These spaces are more than just places to pass the time—they’re where friendships are formed, routines are built, and laughter is shared. Public libraries across the area also play a key role, hosting book clubs, technology help sessions, lectures, and lifelong learning programs designed for older adults.

Faith-based organizations, cultural institutions, and civic groups add another layer of connection, providing opportunities for volunteerism and intergenerational engagement. Whether it’s mentoring, community gardening, or helping at local events, many seniors find renewed purpose by staying involved and giving back.

Community enriches seniors’ lives daily by fostering connection, curiosity, and purpose. Take the next step today—join an exercise class, participate in a book club, try a new hobby, or volunteer your time. Visit your local center, library, or community group to get started and keep building connections.

Reduce Stress —

for a —

Healthier Heart

WWhile you can’t always limit the amount of stress in your life, you can work on changing how you respond to it. Just like the automatic “fight or flight” response that kicks in when you’re scared – your muscles tense, heart rate increases, and brain becomes more alert – your body also has a built-in, healthy relaxation response. When that’s triggered, the opposite happens: your breathing and heart rate slow down, and your blood pressure decreases.

Luckily, with practice, you can learn to trigger that response. Try these techniques on your own or find a teacher or class to help you get started. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the hang of it quickly. And if one approach doesn’t work for you, try something new. You can learn to de-stress in lots of other ways.

• MEDITATION. One of the most studied approaches for managing stress, this involves developing your ability to stay focused on the present, instead of worrying about the past or future. Find a quiet location with as few distractions as possible. Get comfortable by either sitting, lying or walking. Focus your attention on a specific word or set of words, an object or your breathing. And let distractions, including thoughts, come and go without judgment.

• PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION. To feel the effect, first tense your muscles for a few seconds, then relax them. Start by tensing and relaxing your toes, then your calves and on up to your face. Do one muscle group at a time.

• DEEP BREATHING. Take in a slow, deep breath, let your stomach or chest expand and then exhale slowly. Repeat a few times. Many people don’t breathe deeply, but it is relaxing and something you can do anytime, anywhere.

• GUIDED IMAGERY. This involves a series of steps that include relaxing and visualizing the details of a calm, peaceful setting, such as a garden.

Getting your mind and body to a place of calm doesn’t always mean being still, however. Other healthy ways to manage stress include taking a yoga or tai chi class, talking to a professional counselor, joining a stress management program or an art class, or meeting up with friends for a brisk walk. Being in nature can be very soothing for some people.

Combining de-stressors like these with other healthy habits can go a long way toward strengthening your heart. Eat more veggies, fruits and whole grains, and less sodium, sugar and saturated fats, for example. Move your body more – like through dancing and walking meetings. Find exercises you actually love and do them regularly. Get enough good, quality sleep. And develop a strong social support system. Then rethink some of the familiar ways you may be coping with stress, such as drinking alcohol frequently, using drugs and other substances, smoking or overeating. They can actually worsen your stress – and your health.

Learn how to stress less for a healthier heart and more about heart health from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute by visiting www.nhlbi.nih.gov.

Unplug to Recharge: The Benefits of a Digital Detox

IIn today’s always-online world, our devices constantly compete for attention—buzzing, pinging, and lighting up with every new notification. While technology keeps us connected, it can also drain mental energy, disrupt sleep, and distract us. A digital detox doesn’t mean abandoning your phone forever—it’s simply choosing intentional breaks to restore balance. Be aware that starting may feel difficult, but gradual steps can help you overcome resistance and stay motivated.

Designating phone-free hours each day is a powerful place to start. Try keeping devices away during meals so you can fully enjoy your food and engage with the people around you. In the evening, give yourself at least an hour without screens before bed. Starting small makes the goal feel more manageable, and studies consistently show that reducing exposure to blue light at night leads to deeper, more restorative sleep.

Beyond improved rest, unplugging creates space for mindfulness, helping you feel calmer and more centered. Without constant digital noise, your mind can settle, creativity flows more freely, and simple activities—like walking, reading, or just sitting quietly— become surprisingly refreshing. You may notice conversations feel

A digital detox isn’t about restriction—it’s about reclaiming your time and energy, helping you feel more in control of your habits. Start with small, consistent steps. Your mind and body will thank you.

richer, your attention span lengthens, and you reconnect with parts of life that get overshadowed by screen time.

When Kimberly Jung returned home from serving a combat tour in Afghanistan, she carried with her more than military discipline — she brought a missiondriven approach to health, accountability, and community. As a veteran, she learned firsthand that shared goals and shared challenges can connect people

in a way few experiences can match. Today, as the owner of DexaFit Central Jersey in Basking Ridge, she’s using that same philosophy to transform how the community approaches fitness and longevity.

DexaFit provides advanced bodycomposition testing, metabolic analysis, VO2 max testing, and performance data—the gold standard for research and science. “When people understand what’s happening inside their bodies, they can move forward together,” Jung explains. “That creates conversation, accountability, and community,” she adds.

Jung’s commitment to community extends beyond the lab as well. She founded Rumi Spice; a saffron company partnered with Afghan farmers. This is an incredible story about helping the country earn a decent wage while supplying the

world with saffron. Saffron — one of the world’s rarest spices — has long been associated with celebration, connection, and wellness. “It’s another way of bringing people to the table, quite literally, to share experiences that support a healthier life,” she says.

As we step into a new year, Jung’s message is simple: let’s get fit together. With precise data, expert guidance, and a supportive environment, DexaFit is making fitness measurable, personal, and achievable for everybody.

THE 5 SECRETS

TThis month, I’m proud to share some exciting news—the release of the special edition hardcover of The Adventures of Little Billy… In Search of the Magic Tree

This children’s book is more than just a story—it’s the result of decades of research on the core traits every parent hopes to instill in their children. Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing world-class thinkers, business leaders, and inspirational achievers. From thousands of conversations—on radio, television, podcasts, and in person—five universal qualities consistently emerged as the foundation for living a meaningful and successful life.

If you distilled lessons from 14 business and inspirational books, combined with all of those interviews, you’d be left with five essential traits: Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. These are the “5 Secrets” that I believe can help guide children— and adults—toward their best lives. Here are some timeless quotes that capture the heart of each trait and offer us clear reminders of how to live them:

SERVICE

“Catch a passion for helping others, and a richer life will come back to you.”

-William Danforth

ATTITUDE

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past, nor can we alter the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

–Charles R. Swindoll

COURAGE

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”

–Marie Curie

EMPATHY

“Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.”

- Ruppert the Toad

DETERMINATION

“A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.”

– Colin Powell

The wisdom of those who came before us continues to light the path ahead. When we keep these five attributes close—service, attitude, courage, empathy, and determination—we not only elevate ourselves, but we also uplift everyone around us.

And that’s where the real magic begins.
