Introducing an Innovative, Non-Invasive Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain

C

BY DR. CHRIS THOMAS, MD MEDICAL DIRECTOR, PERFORMANCE ORTHO SOMERSET

CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN, EXPLAINED At Performance Ortho, we have treated patients with chronic low back pain for over 25 years. It is one of the leading causes of disability and missed work worldwide. Many patients experience persistent stiffness, aching, muscle tightness, or pain that worsens with standing, walking, lifting, or prolonged sitting. Physical therapy, medications, and injections can help, but some patients continue to struggle with discomfort that limits their quality of life. At Performance Ortho, our board-certified team works together to identify the root cause of back pain. Dr. Thomas explains: “We always start with conservative treatment and advanced diagnostics when necessary, aiming to help patients move better and avoid more invasive procedures whenever possible.” Performance Ortho is proud to offer Focused Shockwave Therapy. This FDA-cleared treatment delivers high-energy acoustic waves to targeted soft tissues in the lower back to stimulate circulation, support the body’s natural healing response, and reduce pain and stiffness. Shockwave Therapy can support healing in chronic low back conditions involving muscle and tendon irritation and persistent soft tissue pain that has not responded to conservative interventions. Many patients experience pain relief and improved mobility after a series of treatments.

Dr. Thomas explains, “One of the most rewarding aspects of Focused Shockwave Therapy is seeing patients regain confidence in movement and daily activity. By stimulating the body’s own healing response, treatment can help patients achieve meaningful pain relief and functional improvement.” BENEFITS OF SHOCKWAVE THERAPY • Covered by Medicare and most insurance plans • Precise and targeted application • Non-invasive, no adverse effects • No medications or injections NEXT STEPS At Performance Ortho, we focus on non-surgical, evidencebased treatments that change lives. If you or a loved one is struggling with low back pain, contact us today to schedule an appointment. Same-day/next-day appointments available, no referral needed, and most insurances accepted (including Medicare). Acton Academy Morristown student Laila Patterson, 12, displays her homemade bug and tick repellents.

oung entrepreneurs from across New Jersey recently gathered at Acton Academy Morristown for the school’s annual Children’s Business Fair, where learners ages 4 to 17 showcased businesses entirely of their own creation. Organized and run by the school’s high school learners, the event featured 84 kid-owned businesses offering everything from handmade jewelry, resin coasters and custom T-shirts to baked goods, lemonade, pickles and mason jar salads.

The fair challenged participants to develop real business plans, calculate profits, pitch their ideas and manage their own booths. Judges awarded prizes for creativity, presentation and overall business success. Rooted in Acton Academy’s entrepreneurial philosophy, the event highlighted confidence, independence and handson learning while drawing strong community support from shoppers and families throughout the area. auren Silverstein of Morristown is helping talented local chefs and bakers turn passion into opportunity through Rising Kitchens. The unique platform connects women, minority and immigrant-owned food businesses with customers throughout Essex, Morris, Union and Somerset counties. Rather than focusing only Chef Nitin Kamat, owner on mentorship, Silverstein helps of Swaadbynitin entrepreneurs reach paying customers through catering, events and corporate partnerships. She describes Rising Kitchens as a “dot connector,” helping local chefs gain visibility while giving customers access to unique cuisines and specialty foods they may not otherwise discover. She developed the idea after recognizing that many gifted culinary entrepreneurs lacked the networks or financial resources to gain visibility. Through Rising Kitchens, customers can discover everything from specialty baked goods and international cuisine to catering for private events, corporate meetings and celebrations while supporting emerging local talent at the same time. arren high school seniors Raina Shah and Paola Caravello are helping younger girls build confidence, friendships and leadership skills through a free Girls Empowerment Club they founded nearly two years ago. Meeting monthly at the Warren Library, the club welcomes girls in elementary and middle school for activities focused on emotional wellness, confidence, communication and self-esteem. Sessions include open discussions, empowerment exercises, crafts and real-life scenarios designed to help girls navigate friendships, school and personal challenges. The pair says the most rewarding part has been watching reserved girls become more confident and form friendships outside the group. Bernardsville Designer Finds New Life for Vintage Jewelry

F

ormer Watchung Alison Faith Rodman resident Alison Faith Rodman, who now resides in Bernardsville, never expected her lifelong love of jewelry to become a creative venture. After years of working internationally as a fashion stylist, Rodman began transforming vintage brooches she collected into necklaces she would actually wear. Friends noticed. Strangers stopped her. Soon, Angel Lynn Vintage was born. Working from her home studio, Rodman handcrafts oneof-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and matching sets using vintage pieces dating from the 1930s through the 1990s. She carefully sources and restores only pieces still in excellent condition, giving each item a new chapter and story to carry forward. For Rodman, jewelry is more than decoration. “It’s armor,” she said. “It changes your mood.” Etsy.com/shop/AngelLynnVintage

Warren Resident Brings Authentic Indian Chikankari to Somerset County

R

adha Kakkar Sharma, a Warren resident, is helping preserve and share a centuries-old Indian embroidery tradition through RVLooms.com. Inspired by watching her mother, grandmother and aunts wear intricate Chikankari garments growing up, Sharma now works to educate shoppers about the difference between authentic hand embroidery and mass-produced imitations. Each piece is handcrafted by artisans in Lucknow, India, where the traditional embroidery style originated and is still created by hand using needle and thread. Some garments can take months to complete. A full-time engineer and mother of two, Sharma hopes to celebrate slow fashion, support artisans and introduce more people to the artistry, craftsmanship and cultural history behind authentic Chikankari clothing. Former Mendham Musician Finds Global Recognition Four Decades Later

F

ormer Mendham resident David Chrenko is proving that sometimes success arrives long after the spotlight fades. As guitarist, songwriter and vocalist for the California-based New Wave power pop band The Bings, David built a devoted following across Southern California in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite packed crowds and growing buzz, the band never secured a major record deal and eventually disbanded. Forty years later, everything changed. After rediscovering the band’s original studio tapes, David and bandmates Mark Randle and his brother Quint Randle

handled getting the restoration and release done, restored and released the music online, where it unexpectedly gained international attention. The resurgence led to radio play across the U.S. and Europe, a vinyl release through Austria’s Bachelor Records, a documentary and reunion concerts through the International Pop Overthrow festival in Los Angeles. In addition, XStream Rock Radio, based in Pennsylvania, will be interviewing the band in June. Music and documentary: thebings.bandcamp.com bit.ly/BingsDocumentary

Basking Ridge Volunteer

Helps Ross Farm Preserve History, Community, and Connection

W

BY JACKIE SCHATELL

When Nola Hansen first visited Ross Farm in Basking Ridge nearly two decades ago, she never imagined it would become such an important part of her family’s life. Today, Hansen is one of the dedicated volunteers helping preserve and promote the historic property through community events, communications, and outreach. Owned by Somerset County and supported by the nonprofit Friends of the Boudinot-SouthardRoss Estate, the former Ross family property has evolved into a vibrant cultural and educational destination. The historic estate traces its roots to Elias Boudinot, a president of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War.

musicians, Grammy Award winners, local performers, and familyfriendly events. Visitors often bring lawn chairs and picnics while enjoying music against the backdrop of the historic property.

Hansen first became involved after her oldest son volunteered there while completing middle school community service hours. What started as a single volunteer project quickly became a family tradition. Over the years, Hansen, her husband, and all three of her sons have spent countless hours helping with events, seasonal programs, and activities at the farm.

Ross Farm is also home to Boudinot’s Giving Garden, an allvolunteer garden that has donated more than 35,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and Community Hope over the years. The property regularly hosts educational field trips, history programs, seasonal celebrations, and community gatherings that continue introducing new generations to the farm.

“It feels so good to volunteer there,” Hansen said. “We feel like we’re making an impact locally while creating a place where people can learn, connect, and enjoy the beauty of the farm.”

For Hansen, one of the greatest rewards has been watching both the farm and her children grow together through volunteering and shared experiences.

One of Hansen’s passion projects is Ross Farm’s music series, which she helps organize and promote. What began more than a decade ago as a single concert idea has grown into a long-running community tradition featuring nationally touring

“It’s become part of our family,” she said. “That’s what makes it so special.”

Helping Veterans Heal Four Paws at a Time BY JACKIE SCHATELL

F

For Bridgewater resident Niki Dawson, helping rescue animals is about far more than saving dogs. Through her work with Paws of War and the organization’s War Torn and veteran support programs, Dawson has become part of life-changing missions that reconnect military members with animals they served beside while also helping veterans heal emotionally through companion and service dogs. Founded in 2014, Paws of War was created with a simple but powerful mission: helping both ends of the leash. Since then, the organization has graduated more than 300 veterans and first responders through its programs, rescued more than 455 dogs and visited 89 shelters while carrying out rescue and transport missions around the world. Dawson has participated in highpressure rescue and transport operations across the country and internationally, including helping save dogs left behind in war zones and disaster areas. Whether assisting with disaster response efforts, rescuing animals from puppy mills, or helping pair veterans with service dogs, she has witnessed firsthand the powerful bond between humans and animals. “These dogs become family,” Dawson said. “For many veterans, reconnecting with an animal they cared for overseas brings back a sense of comfort, trust and unconditional love that they may not have felt in a very long time.” One of the organization’s most meaningful initiatives focuses on

reuniting service members with dogs they cared for while deployed overseas. These emotional reunions often provide comfort, purpose and healing long after military service ends. Dawson says seeing veterans reconnect with animals they once protected is something she will never forget. “You can see the emotion immediately,” she said. “Sometimes the dog remembers them instantly. Watching that reunion is something that stays with you forever.” As spokesperson and Director of Emergency Response and Animal Welfare for the organization, Dawson also helps raise awareness through national media appearances, sharing stories about veterans, rescued animals and the lifechanging impact of these partnerships.

Restored Cascade Fountain Flows Again at Greenwood Gardens BY MICHELLE LEMIEUX

F

For the first time since the early part of the 20th century, water will flow down the seven tiers of the meticulously restored, majestic Cascade fountain at Greenwood Gardens this May. Tucked into the grounds, the Cascade is a rare example of an Italianate Baroquestyle fountain not often found in the U.S. It was designed by William Whetten Renwick for the property’s original owner, Joseph P. Day, and still carries a sense of old-world beauty and flair. Abby O’Neill, Executive Director of Greenwood Gardens, says the fountain’s location, nestled in the hillside below the East Terrace, “offers visitors breathtaking views of the 1,200 acres of South Mountain Reservation.” New plantings, accessible twin horseshoe staircases, and Arts and Crafts era Rookwood ceramics in shell, leaf, and masque designs enhance the renovated fountain.

Cascade Fountain Rendering by Robinson Anderson Summers Landscape Architects

Two years of meticulous examination determined that much of the Cascade’s existing structure could be preserved, according to Allan Summers, Principal of Robinson Anderson Summers Landscape Architects, and general contractor Hobbs Incorporated.

Greenwood Gardens Archives

“This project was three years in the making and represents the completion of the last of the site’s major water features,” said Louise Moos, Chair of the Board of Trustees. Named one of New Jersey Travel and Tourism’s “One Dozen Must-Stroll Garden State Gardens” in 2025, Greenwood Gardens is a historic 28-acre public garden located in Short Hills, supported by volunteers, membership, and donor gifts and support. Guests can visit the unique Cascade at Greenwood Gardens, which is open for the season May 1 through November 8.

Mine did. Long before I ever sat down to write a novel, I was living inside a world that would one day demand to be told. I began my career on Seventh Avenue during the late 1970s and early 1980s— at the height of the denim revolution—a time when fashion didn’t just follow culture, it created it. It was fast. Competitive. Unforgettable. And without realizing it, I was witnessing a moment in history. Embark on a delightful journey of learning about gardening while savoring fresh flavors by planting your own herb garden. Herbs, being some of the easiest plants to grow, are a perfect choice for both beginners and seasoned gardeners, promising a rewarding experience. Unleash your culinary creativity by selecting herbs that complement your cooking style. Basil, a staple in Italian dishes, cilantro, a must-have for Mexican cuisine, rosemary, a perfect match for roasted meats, and mint, an ideal addition to teas and desserts, are just a few examples. Remember, some herbs, like mint, can spread quickly and are best grown in containers, adding a touch of versatility to your herb garden. Herbs require a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a location such as a sunny windowsill, patio, or garden bed. Good drainage is crutial—herbs dislike “wet feet.” Use pots with drainage holes and a well-aerated, nutrient-rich potting mix. Water herbs when the soil feels dry about an inch below the surface, and avoid over-fertilizing, which can weaken the flavor of the herbs. Harvest herbs in the morning after the dew dries but before the sun is too hot, which preserves essential oils. Always cut above a leaf node (where leaves join the stem) to encourage branching and growth. This technique stimulates the plant to produce more leaves, resulting in a bushier and more abundant herb plant.

Paul Miller VW of Bernardsville: A Better Car Buying Experience

A

BY MICHELLE LEMIEUX

A lot goes into buying a car, and Paul Miller Volkswagen of Bernardsville is committed to making sure it’s one of the most positive, simple, and efficient experiences for its customers. Owned by Paul Miller for nearly 15 years, it’s the only dealership serving the town and surrounding areas. “While we’re part of the larger family of Paul Miller dealerships, we have a small-town feel,” says General Manager David Livermore. Since we’ve been in Bernardsville, our customers know our experienced sales and skilled service teams by name; that’s how involved we are in the process.” Paul Miller Volkswagen sells both new and certified used vehicles while providing service and parts for all vehicle brands. Convenient hours, sales valet, and digital retail are also part of the dealership’s offerings. “We’ve expanded how we sell cars to make it easier for buyers,” says Livermore. “Roughly 50% of our transactions begin online. At Paul Miller Volkswagen, we want the experience of buying a car to be fun, not a chore.” To that end, Livermore and his team are committed to transparency and to ensuring customers feel comfortable throughout the entire car-buying or leasing process. Sales advisors can pick up trade-ins and drop off vehicles for test drives at customers’ homes; handle credit checks online; and work on financing and payment options, all in an effort to reduce time. What sets the dealership apart from others is its four-year, 50,000-mile warranty and three-year free maintenance on new car purchases. It also prides itself on working within every buyer’s budget.

“Buying a car is one of the biggest purchases of your life,” Livermore says. “We make it easy and affordable by offering competitive buying and leasing programs, providing quality at every price point.” At the end of the day, however, Paul Miller Volkswagen is proudest of its commitment to community. Whether sponsoring local schools, sports teams, and charities or working alongside other businesses, building and maintaining relationships is most important. “We’re planting seeds to make sure everyone thrives, from our clients to small businesses,” Livermore said. “A stronger community starts with all of us thriving together!” Paul Miller Volkswagen 118 Morristown Road, Bernardsville 908-766-1600 www.paulmillervw.com

Martoccia Landscaping Services Helps Homeowners Create Outdoor Spaces Designed for Living

F

BY JACKIE SCHATELL

For many homeowners, the backyard is little more than open space waiting to be used. For Martoccia Landscaping Services owner Paul Martoccia, it is an opportunity to create a place where families gather, entertain, and make memories for years to come. Founded in 1962, Martoccia Landscaping Services focuses exclusively on design-build landscaping projects throughout Somerset, Union, Morris, and Hunterdon counties, specializing in custom outdoor living spaces tailored to each homeowner’s lifestyle. Martoccia says every project starts with a discovery call, followed by an on-site consultation where clients discuss how they want their space to look, feel, and function. From there, the company develops detailed designs that help homeowners visualize the finished project before construction begins. “We really want people to understand what the space is going to look like before a shovel hits the ground,” Martoccia says. Projects often include patios, grill islands, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, fire pits, fireplaces, landscape lighting, retaining walls, drainage solutions, and surrounding plantings designed to complement the home. The company also redesigns front walkways and foundation landscaping to help create a cohesive look throughout the property. Martoccia says smaller plunge pools have also become increasingly popular for homeowners who want a place to cool off and relax without dedicating the entire backyard to a full-size pool. “A plunge pool is ideal for people who want a place to cool off, relax, and enjoy the space without building a full-size swimming pool,” Martoccia says. “It becomes part of the overall outdoor experience.” Martoccia says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is transforming underused yards into spaces families genuinely enjoy using. “I just love creating spaces where people can spend time with family and friends and make memories,” he says.

The company works closely with clients throughout every stage of the process, often developing projects in phases to match both vision and budget. Martoccia Landscaping Services 908-808-5379 For more information, visit njlandscaping.com Summer 2026 | The Best of Somerset County | 25

As a certified arborist through the NJ Board of Experts, Walter encourages homeowners to watch for warning signs such as dieback at the tops of trees, holes in ash trees, and changes in overall fullness from year to year. He suggests taking annual photos of properties once trees are fully covered in leaves to spot decline early. Walter also believes in using every part of the tree. He recycles everything from removed trees into mulch, firewood, or lumber, and has even built custom tables and handcrafted guitars from reclaimed wood.

Real Estate Done with Heart: The West Oak Team at Coldwell Banker Realty – Basking Ridge

A

A HOME SALE IS NEVER JUST A TRANSACTION. IT IS THE CLOSING OF ONE CHAPTER, THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER, AND OFTEN ONE OF LIFE’S MOST EMOTIONAL DECISIONS. MARIE YOUNG AND THE WEST OAK TEAM AT COLDWELL BANKER REALTY BASKING RIDGE UNDERSTAND THAT BETTER THAN MOST, WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE BUILT ONE OF THE AREA’S MOST RESPECTED REAL ESTATE TEAMS AROUND SOMETHING REFRESHINGLY SIMPLE: PEOPLE FIRST.

Summer 2026 | The Best of Somerset County | 29

Founded by Young, The West Oak Team has become known throughout the area for pairing market expertise with genuine compassion. Their success is impressive, but what clients remember most is not the number of homes sold. It is the calm guidance and steady support they felt along the way. That experience often begins where so many family memories were made: around the kitchen table. When meeting with homeowners, the team takes time to listen to the stories inside the walls, the milestones celebrated there, and the reasons a move has become the right next

step. Whether clients are upsizing, downsizing, relocating, or navigating a difficult transition, they are met with empathy and practical guidance from the first conversation.

something grounded in trust, loyalty, and shared success. Each member brings her own strengths, yet all share the same commitment to integrity, responsiveness, and service.

Just as important, clients know exactly who is representing them. The agent they first meet remains their trusted point person throughout the process, supported by the team behind the scenes whenever needed. It is a collaborative model designed to benefit the client, never to pass people off or make them feel like a number.

Their roots in the community run deep. Team members have lived locally for decades, raised families here, served in civic and school leadership roles, volunteered for charitable causes, and remained active in the towns they serve. They know the neighborhoods, schools, and market rhythms that only true locals can offer. “We’re not just Realtors; we’re neighbors too,” says Young. They are not simply selling homes here. They are ambassadors to the lifestyle and community itself.

That approach has created a rare team culture. In a competitive industry, The West Oak Team has built

They also blend heart with innovation. Long before many competitors embraced digital tools, they were early adopters of advanced real estate marketing. Their listings feature expert staging, award-winning photography, professional videography, interactive digital presentations, QR code technology, social media strategy, and drone footage, including interior drone tours. As certified global luxury specialists, the team brings an elevated level of marketing expertise and presentation to homes across a range of price points and styles.

Coldwell Banker Realty, and recognized among the nation’s top medium-sized teams by RealTrends, sponsored by The Wall Street Journal. The West Oak Team: Real estate done with heart.

Yet for all the technology, the team never loses sight of the human side of the business. Not all moves begin with excitement. Some start after a loss, divorce, job change, or the need to simplify life. In those moments, experience alone is not enough. Clients who need additional patience, discretion, and someone who truly has their back find that this is where The West Oak Team quietly stands apart. The numbers reflect their excellence. In 2025, the team closed 83 transactions totaling $70 million in sales volume. They have been the No. 1 team in the Basking Ridge office since inception, ranked among the top medium teams in

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

HOME, SAFE HOME Tips for Avoiding Household Hazards Home—the place we long for after a tough workday or a long trip, where we hunker down during cold nights and where we welcome family and friends. Our haven to be sure, but it can also cause us harm if we don’t take the necessary safety precautions. Most accidents occur at home, says the National Safety Council (NSC), and the vast majority are avoidable. Here we offer a primer on preventing mishaps and catastrophes at home.

Protection against Falls

Without safety measures in place, every area of your home can be a landmine for trips and tumbles. Keeping rooms well-lit and floors clear of clutter and electrical cords are good starts for preventing falls. Installing handrails on stairways and grab bars in the bathroom, and periodically checking they are secure, are also sure to help. On slippery surfaces, such as linoleum in the kitchen and tile and porcelain in the shower and tub, use non-skid throw rugs and mats or appliqués, respectively. Position furniture in bedrooms close to lamps, switches and telephones, have flashlights handy throughout the house and plug in nightlights in hallways. Lastly, clean up spills on floors immediately.

Poison Proofing

Paint thinners, charcoal lighters, cleaning solvents—all substances found in most homes and all dangerous and potentially deadly when swallowed accidentally. Poison-proof your home by locking away cleansers, paints and pesticides in their original packaging, away from food items and with child-resistant caps. Never store poisonous products in food or drink containers that can be mistaken as safe, particularly by young children. Post emergency numbers near the telephone, and contact your local poison-control center with questions or for assistance.

Averting Fire

It’s a fact: smoke alarms save lives. Install alarms that are UL-listed (certified by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent safety organization) on every level of your home, including the basement and especially near bedrooms and other sleeping areas. Because smoke rises, they should be placed on the ceilings or high up on walls. Regularly test the alarms, change batteries twice a year and replace units older than seven years. The same advice goes for carbon monoxide detectors, critical for alerting you to the presence of CO2, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas emitted by malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances.

In addition to alarms and detectors, experts recommend having UL-listed fire extinguishers in easily accessible locations, but caution their use only for small, contained fires. Extension cords rank among the most common culprits behind home fires, so make sure the correct length, wattage and gauge are used. If you need extension cords, again buy UL-listed brands. Never put them underneath rugs or tack them up against walls, or use indoor cords outside and vice versa. Unplug them when not in use and replace them when they become bent, cut or damaged.

Other fire safety tips include:

• scheduling annual furnace and chimney inspections and cleanings • clearing the dryer lint trap after each load of laundry • avoiding overloaded electrical sockets • turning pot handles in while cooking • blowing out candles when leaving a room • unplugging small appliances after use, especially in the kitchen.

Perhaps the most important fire safety tool is an escape plan. Mark exits for each room in the house on a floor plan and post it on the refrigerator. Choose a family meet-up spot outside of the home, designate an emergency contact, and assemble a take-away kit that includes a first aid kit, flashlight, batteries, prescription medications, water, important phone numbers and photographs of family members. Practice the plan and review it regularly to make adjustments if necessary.

Beware of Burglars

Home safety also involves keeping intruders at bay while you’re away. Make sure to lock all doors and windows, turn on outdoor lighting and alarms and prune back bushes by all entrances so burglars don’t have a place to hide. If you’ll be away for an extended period, leave the impression that someone is at home by installing timers on indoor lighting and TVs or radios, arranging for newspapers and mail to be held or collected by a neighbor, and parking a car in the driveway. And don’t post your away status online. O

Observed each May, **National Arthritis Awareness Month** is dedicated to educating the public about arthritis and its wide-ranging impact on individuals and families. Arthritis is not a single condition, but a term used to describe more than 100 diseases and disorders that affect the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. The goal of this awareness month is to encourage early recognition of symptoms, promote education, and highlight the importance of proactive care to help people of all ages maintain mobility and quality of life. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis affects more than 58 million Americans, including children. Increased awareness helps reduce common misconceptions—such as the belief that arthritis only affects

older adults—and empowers families to seek appropriate medical guidance and supportive resources. Common Types of Arthritis:

Osteoarthritis (OA) The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions joints gradually wears down. It often affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine and may develop with age, injury, or repetitive joint stress.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints. This leads to inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling and can affect multiple joints symmetrically.

Juvenile Arthritis (JA) Juvenile arthritis includes several inflammatory and autoimmune conditions that affect children under age 16. Symptoms may include joint pain, stiffness, fatigue, and changes in growth or physical activity.

Psoriatic Arthritis This type of arthritis affects some people with psoriasis. In addition to joint pain and swelling, it may cause skin flareups, nail changes, and fatigue.

Gout Gout results from a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often causing sudden and severe pain, commonly in the big toe. Diet, genetics, and certain health conditions can increase the risk.

Seasonal Reset Women’s Health Check-Ins Matter Before Summer

A

As spring unfolds and calendars begin filling with graduations, vacations, and outdoor plans, many women focus on preparing their homes, wardrobes, and schedules for summer. Yet one important area is often overlooked: personal health check-ins. Late spring is an ideal time for women to pause, assess how they’re feeling, and prioritize preventive care before the pace of summer accelerates. Women’s bodies are constantly evolving, influenced by hormones, stress, sleep, nutrition, and life stage. A presummer check-in doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can start with scheduling routine appointments—annual physicals, gynecological exams, skin checks,

and any age-appropriate screenings. Addressing these now helps avoid postponing care once summer routines become more hectic. Energy levels and mental well-being also deserve attention. Many women carry lingering fatigue from winter, often compounded by stress and poor sleep. Checking in with yourself—Are you rested? Overextended? Experiencing changes in mood or focus?—can offer valuable insight. Small adjustments such as improved sleep habits, movement, or stress management can significantly impact overall wellness. Nutrition and movement naturally shift in warmer months. This is a good time to

reassess eating patterns, hydration, and physical activity. Rather than focusing on appearance-driven goals, lifestyle experts encourage women to focus on strength, stamina, and feeling well in their bodies. Perhaps most importantly, health check-ins are about self-advocacy. Paying attention to subtle changes, asking questions, and trusting your instincts helps ensure concerns are addressed early. As summer approaches, a thoughtful health reset offers peace of mind—and the freedom to fully enjoy the season ahead feeling strong, informed, and supported.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

An Essential Mineral Your Body Needs Magnesium is one of those quiet essentials in the body that rarely gets attention—yet it plays a role in more than 300 biochemical processes, from muscle movement and nerve function to energy production and heart rhythm. Despite its importance, many adults don’t get enough through diet alone. Magnesium is not a single “one-size-fits-all” supplement. It comes in several forms, each paired with a different compound that influences how it is absorbed and what benefits it may offer. Magnesium glycinate is often considered the most calming form. Because it is bound to glycine, an amino acid with relaxing properties, it is frequently chosen to support better sleep, ease tension, and help manage everyday stress. It is also gentle on the stomach, making it suitable for consistent use. Magnesium citrate is well absorbed and commonly used to support digestive regularity. It can help relieve occasional constipation by drawing water into the intestines, though it is typically not used in high doses long-term for this reason.

For those dealing with fatigue or muscle soreness, magnesium malate is often recommended. It plays a role in energy production at the cellular level, making it appealing for active individuals. A more specialized option, magnesium L-threonate, has gained attention for its ability to reach the brain more effectively, with early research exploring its role in memory and cognitive support. Other forms, such as magnesium taurate and magnesium oxide, are used for cardiovascular support or short-term digestive relief, though absorption can vary. Ultimately, choosing a magnesium type depends on lifestyle needs—whether the goal is better sleep, improved digestion, sustained energy, or overall wellness support. It is advised to check with your physician before starting supplements.

A Focus on Brain Health

Finding answers through clinical trials BY SUE BALDANI

M

issues in memory or cognitive thinking that could potentially lead to Alzheimer’s. Based on those results, they may qualify for one of our clinical trials.”

More than 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. For Dr. Raminder Parihar, neurologist and principal investigator at The Cognitive and Research Center of New Jersey (The CRCNJ), the impact of this illness is deeply personal. She has witnessed the emotional toll it takes on families and the helplessness that comes with watching a loved one decline. At The CRCNJ, Dr. Parihar leads clinical trials aimed at advancing treatments for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Conditions once considered rare, she notes, are becoming increasingly common, making dedicated research more critical than ever.

For those who enter a study, the screening process becomes empowering. Participants receive a comprehensive medical evaluation, at no cost, which may include diagnostic tools not available to the public. “We can be that first stepping stone,” she says. “There is still so much ground to cover, and what we learn through Alzheimer’s research can help future generations and bring us closer to a cure.” Dr. Raminder Parihar

Despite the growing prevalence of cognitive disorders, brain health is often overlooked, especially among adults over 55. “We offer a no-cost memory screening as a first step,” Dr. Parihar explains. “It helps us determine whether someone may be developing early

What if you could treat how you look, how you feel, and how you’re aging. All in one place? Inside Somerset County’s revolutionary practice combining aesthetics, longevity, hormone care, and intimate health under one physician.

F

For decades, medicine has split the body into specialties. A dermatologist for skin. A gynecologist for hormones. A wellness clinic for energy. A specialist, somewhere, for whatever comes next. Patients are left to assemble the pieces themselves, often without the bigger picture coming together at all. Dr. Gur Sandhu founded AlyneMD in Warren to end that. The practice combines four disciplines that traditionally live in separate offices: regenerative aesthetics, longevity diagnostics, hormone and metabolic care, and intimate health. The same physician designs and oversees all of them.

Dr. Gur Sandhu

“Patients I trusted kept asking the same question,” Dr. Sandhu says. “Where do I go for the whole picture? Not just my skin, but my hormones, my energy, how I’m aging?” That answer, he felt, did not yet exist locally. AlyneMD’s regenerative aesthetics include personalized laser treatments, wrinkle reducers, fillers, PRP, PDO threadlifts, regenerative exosome cell therapy, and hair restoration. Longevity diagnostics include full body MRI, advanced blood panels measuring more than 160 biomarkers, VO2 Max testing, and sleep apnea screening. Hormone and metabolic care cover bioidentical hormone therapy, peptide optimization, GLP-1, and vitamin injections. Intimate health care addresses men’s and women’s sexual wellness. What patients describe most often, Dr. Sandhu says, is the absence of upsell. Every protocol is personally customized. “We look at how you feel, how you look, and how you’re aging.”

A Fusion of Flavors

A

Breakfast and Lunch with a Twist BY SUE BALDANI

Annie DeMoura and her husband, Joe DeMoura, have always loved eating breakfast out on weekends, but they couldn’t find anything unique. So, this already successful restaurateur opened her own brunch place last October.

“Our menu is very unique because we add a twist, a fusion of different cuisines,” she says. “I develop and share the recipes with my kitchen team, and we refine them together, from preparation to presentation. They also bring in inspiration from their own cultures.”

Brown Sugar Café, with its welcoming and friendly staff, offers breakfast and lunch options that are fresh, healthy, and delicious. Working with four local farms to provide fresh ingredients from dairy and meat to fruits and vegetables, and employing award-winning bakers, the café has quickly become a local favorite, especially on weekends.

Guests can enjoy signature dishes like the House Soufflé Pancake, a fluffy Japanese-style pancake, and Shakshuka, a dish of poached eggs in a rich tomato sauce, alongside coffee, lattes, fresh pressed juices, and bubble tea. The eclectic menu also includes traditional American fare, such as bacon and eggs, French toast, Chicken & Waffles, sandwiches, and more. In addition to delicious food, Annie says it’s also critical to have a great team. She’s built a group of dedicated, talented individuals who share her passion for hospitality and attention to detail. Three of the team members are experienced, young people from Taiwan, her native country. Her staff is at the heart of the café’s inviting, community-driven atmosphere. The feedback, she says, has been overwhelmingly positive. “Guests love the variety. We have a wide-ranging menu that gives them something new to try each visit, along with rotating seasonal specials.” The cakes are phenomenal and, like all the bread and pastries, are made in-house. So, stop in and discover your next favorite dish and your new favorite meet-up spot!

Savor the Flavors of Summer!

B

Bringing your family together for a meal that tastes like summer is what the season is all about. If you’re spending an evening firing up the grill, flipping on the oven, forming a homemade salad or anything inbetween, the time spent together enjoying warm weather flavors is what everyone truly craves. Your next backyard meal can start with a flavor infusion from Newman’s Own Garlic Vinaigrette & Marinade, a versatile option that can be tossed with salads or added to proteins before cooking. Made with premium ingredients and a special blend of herbs and spices, it sets itself apart by mixing garlic into the dressing in four different forms—minced, powder, granulated and chopped—to deliver a delightfully bold and zesty flavor with every bite. Take advantage of its mouthwatering taste with these Summer Shrimp and Squash Kebabs, an easy way to bring loved ones together both before and during the meal. Put an adult in charge of heating the grill while the entire family works together to marinate a concoction of shrimp, tomatoes, corn, red onion, squash and zucchini before threading onto skewers that are ready to hit the grates. If hot weather means lighter fare is on the menu, this Mediterranean Orzo Salad can be ready in mere minutes. Just toss together a handful of tantalizing ingredients for a simple bite of summer that’s perfect as a meatless meal or al fresco side dish. Or you can turn it into a quick weeknight dinner by adding cooked chicken, shrimp or a protein of your choice. After a day of fun in the sun, some nights call for a quick and easy solution that lets the oven do the work for you. When pizza cravings strike, consider an option like Newman’s Own Stone-Fired Crust Pizzas that bring authentic, Italian pizza with lightly blistered crusts to your kitchen table. Available in three authentic flavors—Margherita, Quattro Formaggi (Four Cheese) and Spinaci & Formaggi (Spinach & Cheese)—the light, airy, slightly crispy crust is ready to devour after just 10 minutes in the oven.

Fire & Mozzarella at Troy’s Firehouse

S

Some dishes earn their place at the table through sheer, unapologetic comfort—and Veal Parmigiana is one of them. At the heart of this beloved Italian-American classic is a tender veal chop, pounded and pan-seared to a golden crust before being blanketed in a rich, slow-simmered tomato sauce. A generous layer of fresh mozzarella melts over the top, bubbling and bronzed to perfection in a roaring wood-fired oven—lending that unmistakable smoky depth no conventional oven can replicate. Served alongside a twirl of silky linguini tossed in the same housemade marinara, every bite is cooking elevated—and every forkful proves it. Troy’s Firehouse 51 Mt. DIAMOND MINDS

Attitude BY BARRY FARBER

“

“A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.” — Earl Nightingale

What Is Attitude?

S

Some say that your attitude toward any situation is the most powerful asset you can ever possess. A positive and resilient attitude shapes not only how others respond to you, but also how you grow and learn along the way. Last month, we talked about Service and the message from Lawrence T. Owl in Little Billy’s Search for the Magic Tree. As part two of this journey through the five secrets, Little Billy meets Bosco the Bear, whose message is simple yet profound: “Give a smile to all you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.” Think about that for a moment. Isn’t it amazing how something as small as a smile can change the energy around you? The next time you take a walk, try an experiment: smile at the people who pass you by. Most will smile right back. That simple exchange—one small moment of kindness—can brighten someone’s day, including your own. The truth is, the world often reflects the attitude we bring to it.

Attitude is defined as the mental position you take regarding a fact or a state. But in real life, it’s much more than that. • It’s not what you look at that counts, but how you look at it. • It’s not what you hear, but how you hear it. • It’s not what you think, but how you think it. Your attitude colors every moment of your day—whether you realize it or not. From it flows your joy and gratitude for life’s blessings, and from it can also come your frustration and disappointment when things don’t go as planned. Attitude is the lens through which you experience everything. There are some circumstances in life we can change; many, we cannot. When faced with the things we cannot change, we have two choices: we can live in disappointment, bitterness, and anger—or we can look within, find that

“

resilient spark that refuses to be broken, and rise again with renewed strength and perspective.

A positive attitude is not about forcing a smile or pretending everything is fine. It’s about responding to life with acceptance, courage, and hope. It’s about recognizing that while we can’t control every situation, we can always control how we show up for it. When you choose to see things through a positive lens, you not only transform your own world—you help others see the light, too.

“

“I am not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.” — Louisa May Alcott
