Impact100 Essex has awarded its 2025 $100,000 Impact Grant to the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative (PHEI), a nonprofit focused on equitable care for Black mothers. The grant will help launch the Lt. Tamesha Dickey Black Maternal Health Center in East Orange, New Jersey’s first Black maternal health clinic.
“We are humbled to receive this grant,” said Dr. Nastassia K. Harris, PHEI’s founder. “This vital support ensures that Black moms in our community will have access to safe, equitable perinatal care.”
Now in its eighth year, Impact100 Essex is a women-led philanthropic collective that has awarded over $1.2 million to Essex County nonprofits since 2017. PHEI was selected from among four finalists. The Apostles’ House, Braven, and Project U.S.E. will each receive $10,000 grants.
“We are thrilled to support PHEI and help bring this important clinic to life,” said Grants Committee Co-Chair Kristin Stuek.

Lowell S. Furhman from North Caldwell is one of the creative forces behind The Gift, a transformative, immersive play from Canada. A professional mentalist for over 30 years, Lowell brings a profound understanding of perception and audience engagement to the production.
Developed by a four-person team, the show explores whether our lives are governed by chance or destiny by using a mix of live theater and audience participation. The story centers on a fractured family and a grandfather who, after decades of research, claims to have scientifically proven destiny exists. During each performance, audience members are invited on stage to reenact his experiments—often with astonishing results.
Co-created with Canadian performer Robert Lamar, the show has earned critical praise. With a Cirque du Soleil set designer and a renowned Canadian writer and director on board, the production is as visually striking as it is thought-provoking. After six years of development, Lowell says the project has reinvigorated his creative spirit—and with all signs pointing forward, the show is destined to be a success. Current plans are to tour throughout Canada and eventually bring this production to the US. For more information, send an email to: manlow@verizon.net.

Livingston Newborns Group Provides a Community for New Parents
Becca Siegel founded the Livingston Newborns Facebook group to connect new parents and those on maternity leave in the area, providing a supportive and social space for navigating the challenges of raising newborns. When living in South Orange, she had been part of a similar “new parents” group. When moving back to her hometown of Livingston, she noticed the lack of a local community for expectant and new parents. Taking matters into her own hands, she created the Livingston group in October 2024.
The group hosts weekly meetups on Fridays at 10am at Forum Coffee on S. Livingston Avenue. These informal gatherings allow members to bond over coffee, share advice, exchange baby items, and offer support. All new or expectant Essex County parents are welcome to join.
Becca, who also writes the blog halfhalfhome.com/ parenting, hopes to create lasting connections and traditions for local families. For details, contact Becca via the Facebook group @Livingston Newborns.
If you or someone you know in Essex/Morris County is doing something interesting, send an email to Jackie.subessex@gmail.com

South Orange Elks Open House Showcases Local Impact and the Heart Behind It
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
OOn May 17, the South Orange Elks Lodge opened its doors to the community for a lively and meaningful Elks Open House—a chance to demystify the organization’s mission and spotlight the many charitable efforts it champions year-round. The event was organized by Elks Event Coordinator Cevil Joyce, whose passion and dedication have helped transform the lodge into one of the fastest-growing and most engaged in New Jersey.
“We hear the same question all the time— ‘What do the Elks actually do?’” said Cevil. “This open house was a way to answer that clearly by bringing people face-to-face with the organizations we support and showing how every event here translates into real community impact.”
Under Cevil’s guidance, the open house featured representatives from numerous Elks-supported initiatives, including Planned Parenthood, Girls Helping Girls, Jubilee Community Outreach, Rent Party Garden, and the Elks’ Special Children’s Committee, which supports Camp Moore, a free summer camp for children with special needs. Guests also toured the lodge’s community garden and learned about its on-site food
pantry, both of which provide fresh food and essentials to neighbors in need.
Cevil, who began volunteering with the Elks after leaving a long career in the cosmetics industry, says she was searching for more meaningful work. “After years in a field that often felt superficial, I wanted to do something that truly gives back. The Elks gave me that opportunity. It’s incredibly fulfilling.”
Through events like Elktoberfest, Galentine’s dance parties, and First Fridays with live music, the lodge raises thousands of dollars each year. February’s Galentine’s party, for example, brought in $2,000 for Girls Helping Girls, and the Elks are now backing a member-led Rage Run to benefit Planned Parenthood. All of this, says Cevil, happens because members care—and because the lodge, which donates around $25,000 a year, remains flexible and responsive to the needs of its community.
“Our members can bring forward causes they’re passionate about,” she explained. “If we can’t donate from our charity fund directly, we’ll help create a fundraising event. We find a way to help.”
With nearly 340 members and a vibrant calendar of community events, the South Orange Elks Lodge has become a hub of generosity and connection—something Cevil has helped nurture with her energy and vision.
“It’s not about me,” she said. “It’s about doing something that matters. Whether you’re coming to a dance party or just grabbing a drink on member night, you’re supporting real causes. That’s the power of this place.”
New members and community partners are always welcome at the lodge. As the open house showed, there’s plenty of room—and plenty of heart—for all. The Elks Lodge is located at 220 Prospect St. in South Orange. For information, visit: southorangeelks.com.

Never Quit On e-Armed Golfer Jimmy Nolan Inspires Through Grit, Giving, and Golf
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
WWhen Jimmy Nolan of Verona lost his right arm to osteosarcoma (bone cancer), he didn’t give up on sports—he simply adapted. Diagnosed with a benign tumor at 13, low-grade cancer at 15, and finally high-grade cancer by age 16, all in his shoulder, he underwent multiple surgeries before doctors ultimately amputated his arm in August 1999 to save his life. Just a year later, he won county and state tennis titles as a lefty. Today, Jimmy is using golf to build something even greater: a movement that proves life without a limb is truly limitless.
Quitting was never part of his mindset. After tennis came golf, which he picked up in his 20s and has since turned into both a passion and a platform for purpose.
Now 42, Jimmy is a husband, father of two boys, and a full-time police dispatcher in Riverdale, the town where he grew up. Off the clock, he tirelessly advocates for and raises funds to support adaptive athletes through the North American One-Armed Golfer Association (NAOAGA).
NAOAGA hosts clinics and tournaments across the country for golfers with upperbody disabilities, from amputees to stroke survivors to individuals with cerebral palsy. Jimmy first attended a tournament in 2020 and immediately felt at home.
“These men and women bring such inspiration, pride, kindness, and great energy to the sport,” he says. “I’ve found lifelong friends, and I love giving back— especially to help junior one-armed golfers feel like they belong.”
To help others participate, Jimmy fundraises year-round—covering travel, lodging, and tournament fees for fellow players who might not otherwise afford to compete. In the past five years, he’s raised over $10,000 through fundraising events and a giving page.
“A lot of people don’t know how to ask for help or just don’t have a network,” Jimmy says. “I’m happy to step up for them.”
Jimmy and over 300 golfers nationwide participate in NAOAGA’s tournaments. The upcoming 25th anniversary championship will be held this June in Indiana, drawing 60 adaptive players from across the country.
While Jimmy admits he’s not the best golfer on the course, that humility is part of what makes him so admired. In truth, he’s a skilled competitor—an all-around athlete whose one-armed swing impresses even seasoned players. But his role goes far beyond his swing. “I’m the guy who makes sure you want to come back,” he says. “I reach out to people, pump up the energy, and help everyone feel like they belong.”
It’s more than a game. It’s therapy, camaraderie, and community. Jimmy describes NAOAGA as a lifeline—a place where people with vastly different stories find shared purpose through perseverance.
As a father, Jimmy hopes his sons see his journey not as one of loss, but of resilience.
“I just want them to grow up knowing they can do anything. Because if their onearmed dad can, they sure can too.”

When Other Doctors Say
‘Live with It’— We Say, Let’s Fix It!
If you’ve tried everything —specialists, prescriptions, physical therapy, unusual diets—and still find yourself stuck in pain, fatigue, or hormonal chaos, merely existing instead of truly living… you are not alone. At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we deeply understand the exhaustion, the desperation, and the quiet heartbreak that comes with chronic, misunderstood conditions. That’s why patients turn to us—not because it’s the obvious choice, but because they’ve come to recognize the need for a new perspective, a different approach -and the results they thought were out of reach
Why Patients Choose Us—And Stay
Yes, there are many acupuncturists—and plenty of doctors. But what makes us truly different is the rare ability to blend the best of both worlds: the centuries-old wisdom of Chinese Medicine and the precision of modern medical science. Led by Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc, a practitioner with over 15 years of clinical experience, a doctorate in Traditional Chinese Medicine and a strong background in pharmaceutical sciences and toxicology, we offer more than needles—we offer insight, integration, and real solutions.
Real Testing. Real Answers. Real Relief.
Your body tells a story, and we listen—through your words and through traditional and advanced diagnostics like saliva hormone testing and functional medicine evaluations. We specialize in uncovering hidden imbalances often missed by conventional labs and looking at the whole picture— your diet, gut health, metabolisim, inflammation, stress—all of it. Our integrative approach helps treat not just symptoms, but the root causes of conditions.
Who We Help
Patients turn to us when they’re ready for real solutions to stubborn, lifelimiting issues like:
“She understood me. No one else ever listened like she did.”
“I didn’t believe in acupuncture—now I’m telling everyone about it.”
Chronic conditions often stem from a complex interplay of immune imbalances, persistent stress, gut dysbiosis, and environmental toxins—all driving systemic inflammation. At our clinic, we don’t just treat symptoms; we design precision-based programs tailored to you.
Whether it’s Metabolic Reset, Hormone Balancing, Neurological Regeneration, or Physiologic De-stressing, each program is rooted in deep understanding and advanced integrative therapies—from BioResonance and Ozone to acupuncture, dry needling, complex herbal formulas, nutraceuticals, nutritional strategies and specialized body movement. This is personalized healing—built and tailored around your story, not a textbook.
You Deserve Better Answers
We treat you like a whole person—not a case file. We don’t believe your conditions are a life defining diagnosis you simply have to live with. Here, we dig deeper. We help you understand your body. And we build a plan to heal it.
If you’re ready to feel better and live a more vibrant life—and you’re truly committed to making it happen—give us a call and let’s get started. Visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com or call (973) 444-8932 to book your first consultation.”
Lacordaire Students Explore Global Leadership at the United Nations and
LLacordaire Academy’s 5th to 7th grade students recently visited the United Nations and the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in New York City, coinciding with the historic election of Pope Leo XIV. The trip offered a powerful blend of current events and hands-on learning.
In preparation, students studied the UN in history class, examining its structure, global impact, and challenges. At UN headquarters, they toured meeting rooms and explored an exhibit on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. “They’re ambitious but achievable if world leaders work together,” said 7th-grader Adrian Villegas ’26.
The group then visited Uganda’s Mission to the UN, where they were hosted by Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, a Lacordaire parent. Students asked insightful questions about Uganda’s economy, diplomacy, and refugee policies. “They treat refugees like regular citizens,” Villegas ’26 noted. “I really value that.” While there, students and diplomats gathered to watch the Vatican’s live announcement of Pope Leo XIV. The trip exemplified
Lacordaire’s commitment to immersive, real-world learning experiences and international understanding. “[This trip] was a demonstration of peace and how we can come together, even though there are so many different things going on in the world,” Alden Gallagher ’26 reflected.

The Importance of Pollinator Plants in Supporting Biodiversity
PPollinator plants play a crucial role in sustaining ecosystems by supporting the insects and animals responsible for pollination. These plants attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and even bats, which transfer pollen from one flower to another, enabling fertilization and the production of seeds and fruit. Without pollinators, many of the world’s crops and wild plants would struggle to reproduce, leading to reduced biodiversity and food shortages.
Pollinator plants are typically rich in nectar and brightly colored to draw in their pollinating partners. Common examples include milkweed, coneflower, bee balm, lavender, and sunflowers. Each species offers unique benefits, such as providing habitat, offering bloom times across seasons, or hosting specific pollinators. For instance, milkweed is essential for monarch butterflies, serving as a food source for their larvae.

Elements to Improve Your Landscape
AA beautiful landscape combines function, style, and ease of maintenance. With the right materials you can create a yard that looks great year-round with minimal upkeep.
Mulch is essential for healthy garden beds. It retains moisture, prevents weeds, and adds a clean, finished look. Apply a 2–3 inch layer around plants and refresh it annually to keep beds tidy and nourished.
Flagstone steppers create natural, attractive walkways through grass or gardens. These flat stones guide foot traffic, protect your lawn, and blend beautifully into any outdoor design.
Landscape rocks add texture and contrast. Use larger stones as focal points or borders, and smaller gravel or pebbles as low-maintenance ground cover. They’re ideal for dry areas and reduce the need for watering and weeding.
Concrete pavers are great for patios, paths, or driveways. They offer clean lines, durability, and easy customization. Available in various shapes and colors, pavers enhance both form and function in your landscape.
Edging ties everything together. Whether you choose metal, stone, or plastic, edging defines spaces and keeps mulch, rocks, or grass in their place. It gives your yard a neat, professional finish.
By combining these elements, you create a cohesive, eyecatching outdoor space that’s easy to maintain. The key to a lasting, beautiful landscape isn’t just the plants—it’s the structure that supports them.

FFOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, RENO’S APPLIANCE HAS BEEN A TRUSTED NAME IN NEW JERSEY—KNOWN NOT ONLY FOR ITS PREMIUM SELECTION OF HOME APPLIANCES BUT ALSO FOR ITS UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO SERVICE, COMMUNITY, AND FAMILY. FOUNDED IN 1951 BY RENO CIOLETTI AS RENO’S RADIO & TV SHOP IN ELMWOOD PARK, THE BUSINESS HAS GROWN INTO A 16,000-SQUARE-FOOT RETAIL SHOWROOM OFFERING A FULL SPECTRUM OF APPLIANCES—ALONG WITH A CULTURE DEEPLY ROOTED IN GIVING BACK.
Today, the business is operated by Reno’s three sons—John Cioletti, President/CEO; Jim Cioletti; and Paul Cioletti. The Cioletti family continues to carry forward Reno’s core values of integrity, compassion, and customer-first service.
“We were raised to take care of people,” says John. “Life’s been good to us, and giving back is just the right thing to do.”
That philosophy isn’t just a motto—it’s a way of life. John has served for more than a decade as a trustee of the St. Joseph’s Health Foundation, one of the state’s largest providers of charity care. Reno’s was the signature sponsor of this year’s “Fashion with Compassion” event, which welcomed over 400 attendees and raised substantial funds for the hospital.
In recognition of his impact, John was honored with the prestigious Robert M. Marcalus Legacy Award at the 2024 St. Joseph’s Gala.
Reno’s philanthropic reach goes even further. The company received the Faith in Paterson Award in 2022, recognizing its longstanding community support. John also serves on the advisory board of the Spring Lake Hope Foundation and sits on the board of Hope’s Promise, an equine therapy nonprofit supporting children with autism and special needs. Reno’s actively donates to animal shelters across the region and recently participated in two George to the Rescue renovation projects for families facing medical and financial hardship— donating essential appliances to ease their burden.
A Legacy of Service
(continued from the previous page)
“
We work together, not for each other. Our team knows we have their backs, and that translates to how they treat every customer— with kindness, honesty, and respect.
Inside the showroom, Reno’s offers a curated selection of top appliance brands, including Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Jenn-Air, Thermador, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Electrolux, and more. Whether customers are outfitting a gourmet kitchen, upgrading a laundry room, or building an outdoor cooking oasis, Reno’s caters to all lifestyles and budgets. Popular features like air fryer ovens, smart appliances, and induction cooktops are on display alongside eco-friendly models. Emerging color trends like matte black, white, navy, and emerald green complement the timeless stainless steel, black, and white finishes.
During the pandemic, outdoor living took center stage—and Reno’s was ready. With summer and Father’s Day approaching, shoppers can explore grills, beverage centers, refrigeration, and full outdoor kitchen solutions to enhance their backyard experience.
A standout feature of Reno’s service is their in-house corporate chef, who helps shoppers understand appliance functionality before they buy. Combined with a knowledgeable, low-pressure sales staff—many of whom have been with the company for years—the Reno’s approach is refreshingly personal.
“We work together, not for each other,” John explains. “Our team knows we have their backs, and that translates to how they treat every customer—with kindness, honesty, and respect.”
From humble beginnings to a legacy of leadership, Reno’s Appliance remains deeply connected to the community it serves—providing high-quality products and heartfelt service with purpose.

Quick and Efficient Mediation Resolutions
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
CCipriano Law Offices, PC, is an awardwinning New Jersey law practice. Founded by Melissa Cipriano, a seasoned attorney, the firm specializes in all aspects of family law, including divorce and child custody. Mediation is one of its most popular services, which solves family issues and often helps parents and children confront complicated situations.
Most divorce cases in New Jersey do not go to trial. Court cases are often very expensive and time-consuming. Instead, most attorneys recommend that their clients consider mediation before contemplating litigation.
Mediation is coming to the table to discuss legal issues positively. Mediators compare the environment to one where
people converse at a table. It promotes clearer discussion of the issues and is not as emotional as the formalities of court proceedings. A mediator presents relevant facts and gives objective views. Further, it is cost-effective and resolves the issues presented more quickly than a court action.
In addition to Ms. Cipriano, the Firm has four well-qualified mediators. All the law firm’s mediators have children and extensive court experience including trials. Not only do they understand the complexities of parent/child relationships, but they are also involved in the court process. They know the judges and understand the courtroom practices. We are mediators, and in that role, we help people come to a resolution by giving them creative ideas,” says Cipriano. “We also
inform them of the law and what would or could happen if they go to court.”
Obtaining a timely court date and having a lengthy trial loom with a court case. So, in addition to providing valuable insight into potential court case decisions, the Cipriano Law mediators can meet with clients, often within a week, and offer a quick resolution to the issues.
“We always make time for our clients,” says Cipriano. “And we do so most in the most efficient, effective, and cost-saving manner.”

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE
Conquering Peripheral Neuropathy with Rose Gold Wellness
“It’s as though l’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.”
“It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”
“Like I’m walking on wet paint with rolled up socks.”
And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.
“It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Rose W.
Rose was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.
“My doctor sat me down and said, ‘Rose, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but you have peripheral neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable. My first thought was, ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.”
While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown. This was the case with Rose. “Basically every question I had was met with an ‘I don’t know. It was depressing to say the least.”
Eventually, Rose was forced to quit her job because the numbness had started to set in and prevented her from driving. Fortunately, she went to a talk Rose Gold Wellness gave on what they were doing to treat peripheral neuropathy.
“I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor on TV saying she had a 90% success rate in treating neuropathy! I just had to call and I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”
Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, founder of Rose Gold Wellness, says that cases like Rose’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in offering hope.”
To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails.”
“Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions like neuropathy for thousands of years,” shares Dr. Rosie.
“I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my two decades of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on a number of factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”
Four months after treatment, Rose is back bat work and thriving. “Being back at work isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Rose. “Not only was l able to attend my son’s wedding, but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Rosie to thank for it. To think, I might’ve missed that.” Rose held back tears.
If you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its cause, it’s time to call Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold Wellness. Call (862) 622-6289 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit rosegoldwellness.com to take advantage of their new new patient offer, a $40 consult (normally $240).
Save a Life from Stroke
SStrokes can happen to anyone, at any age – even young people. Despite being one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States, strokes are largely preventable, treatable and beatable – if you can control your risk factors.
According to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. Keeping blood pressure in check, living a healthy lifestyle and knowing stroke warning signs may help protect you and your loved ones.
Here are key insights from the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation.
Controlling Risk Factors
Up to 80% of strokes may be preventable, according to the American Stroke Association. You can take action to prevent strokes by managing your risk factors, like high blood pressure, a leading cause and controllable risk factor for stroke and heart disease.
Other risk factors include diabetes and obesity, which can be kept in check with healthy lifestyle behaviors such as good nutrition. Quitting smoking and being physically active are important. Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, also increases stroke risk. In fact, people with AFib are five times more likely to have a stroke, according to the American Heart Association.
F.A.S.T.
Face Drooping | Arm Weakness | Speech | Time to Call 911
Most adults in the U.S. don’t know the stroke warning signs, nor that stroke is largely treatable if you call 911 as soon as you recognize the symptoms.
Learning the acronym F.A.S.T. can help you recognize that someone may be having stroke symptoms so you can take life-saving action.
F: Face Drooping. Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?
A: Arm Weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S: Speech. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.”
T: Time to Call 911. If you or anyone else shows any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
Preventing a Second Stroke
Nearly 1 in 4 strokes occur in people who had a previous stroke, sometimes because they don’t know what caused the first, making identifying the cause of the stroke a key step toward future prevention. Treatment depends on the type of stroke someone is having, which can be determined with a series of medical evaluations and tests.
Work with your health care professional to develop a plan that helps you move forward after a first stroke while preventing a second. This plan should include controlling risk factors, like achieving and maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
“Preventing a second stroke is possible with the right approach,” said Teresita Casanova, MD, HCA Healthcare affiliated neurologist and American Stroke Association volunteer expert. “Taking medicines as prescribed, monitoring health numbers, and making small, consistent lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Stroke survivors should feel empowered to take control of their health and work with their care team to build a strong prevention plan.”
To help you in your journey, you can rely on tools such as the Heart & Stroke Helper, a free self-management app available for stroke survivors and their caregivers. The app allows patients to oversee their health in one place with features that track progress on lifestyle habits, manage medications, track health numbers, provide information about stroke and allow patients to connect with others for inspiration.

Sleep Better with Ethical Mattresses
SSleep is more than just a part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s the foundation upon which all else depends. That’s according to Dr. Matthew Walker, author of the New York Times Bestseller, Why We Sleep. Walker says sleep makes us cleverer, more attractive, slimmer, happier, healthier, and can even help to ward off cancer. That’s why choosing the mattresses and pillows for our home is critically important.
The Ethical Mattress Company in Millburn, NJ, offers toxin-free mattresses and pillows made in the United States. Bryan Umiker, owner of Ethical Mattress and an industry veteran, says the mattresses are “designed to provide the perfect combination of comfort, support, and temperature management for the healthy and restorative sleep you need.”
Umiker says their mattresses utilize four ingredients: organic cotton, wool, natural latex foam made from the sap of rubber trees, and pocketed-coil springs. “Our hybrid designs combine these four ingredients to ensure you’re properly supported for ergonomic alignment all night long, while simultaneously eliminating pressure points for supreme comfort.” Umiker adds, “Unlike most national brands, our mattresses contain no fiberglass, no petrochemical foams, and no toxic laminates.”
A long-time Maplewood resident, Umiker spent 10 years as the mattress buyer for Bloomingdale’s and was most recently Vice President for the online mattress brand Casper. “I’ve seen firsthand all that’s wrong with how mattresses are made and sold,” Umiker says. “That’s why I opened the Ethical Mattress Company. To change the world, one mattress at a time.”

Misidentified Ivy
English Ivy Incorrectly Labeled as Poison Ivy
In the May issue of Suburban Essex, an image was incorrectly labeled as Poison Ivy. The image that was printed is actually English Ivy. This correction aims to clarify the visual differences to avoid confusion.
Poison Ivy is well-known for its three-leaf clusters, which are a primary visual indicator. The leaves are typically almond-shaped with pointed tips, and they can appear glossy or matte depending on the season. The edges may be smooth or slightly toothed, but they are always arranged in groups of three—a trait summed up by the familiar warning: “Leaves of three, let it be.”
Poison Ivy changes its appearance throughout the seasons: Spring—Leaves are reddish and shiny; Summer—Leaves are green and may appear waxy; Fall—Leaves turn vibrant shades of red, yellow, or orange. Additionally, Poison Ivy sometimes grows small, white or cream-colored berries, and its vines are often hairy—a distinguishing feature that is key for identification.
A Smile Opens a Door
We apologize for the confusion caused by the incorrect image labeling. Proper identification of Poison Ivy is crucial for safety, as contact with its oil—urushiol— can cause severe allergic reactions.
Moving forward, we will ensure more stringent verification of plant images to prevent such errors.

Transform Your Summer Body at The Rejuvenation Centers
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
BBuild summer bodies now. With beach visits, weddings, and other special events celebrated in lovely summer weather, now is the time to consider visiting The Rejuvenation Centers (TRC) to obtain that perfect body through the health and wellness treatments offered at TRC’s locations in Verona (Montclair Rejuvenation Center) and West Caldwell (West Caldwell Rejuvenation Center).
Ed Fritz and Dr. Kelly DiStefano, owners of TRC, have prepared a plan to help you achieve your best body this summer:
The first step includes diet injections. “Numerous patients have achieved weight loss goals through this program,” states Ed. “We also offer free consultations so that you can determine whether this program is right for you.”
After diet injections, Ed states that many clients want to work on stubborn fat areas or “speed bumps” that may still need improvement after weight loss. CoolSculpting® is their recommended treatment. TRC offers a great program with unlimited therapies to eliminate those problem areas over four to five months.
Following weight and fat loss, patients can build muscle for overall body tone in the final phase of the outer body enhancements. “CoolTone™ is a muscle-building device used to achieve this goal. It provides electrical stimulation to strengthen and build muscle quickly and efficiently.
Creating a beautiful, trim and toned physique is only one facet of TRC’s wellness plan. Patients may look to treatments that complement the improved body and build inner beauty and immune support. New injectable therapies reach the cellular levels and slow down the aging process. Intravenous therapies with Vitamin B supplements, such as Glutathione, MICC, and NAD, effectively combat signs of aging and give you an outer glow.
With the latest therapies and treatments, TRC promises a summer body that enhances beauty and wellness to keep you feeling and looking your best for every occasion.

FFor many kids, braces are just another milestone on the way to adulthood. But for Dr. Gigi Paralkar, founder of Livingston Family Orthodontics, orthodontics was nothing short of life-changing.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Braces as a Beginning
Dr. Gigi Paralkar’s Journey to Transforming Smiles
“As a child, I desperately needed braces— and I knew it,” she recalls. “Orthodontic treatment completely changed the way I looked and felt about myself. Years later, I knew I wanted to give that same experience to others.”
Her passion was further fueled by two strong role models: her father, a general dentist whose office she often visited growing up, and her own orthodontist—an Indian woman who showed her what was possible. “Seeing someone who looked like me in that role had a real impact,” she says.
Now known affectionately as Dr. Gigi by her patients, she’s created a warm, inclusive practice that treats multiple generations. “We see a lot of families—siblings, parents, and even grandparents in treatment at the same time,” she explains. “It’s not uncommon for patients in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s to want to improve their smiles.”
She encourages parents to bring children in for a consultation around age seven—not necessarily to begin treatment, but to catch potential issues early and plan accordingly. From there, patients receive unrushed appointments and personalized care.
“We’re not a corporate chain,” Dr. Gigi emphasizes. “As a boutique practice, we really take the time to get to know our patients—and they get to know us.”
Reflecting on her journey, she adds, “I feel honored that people trust us with their care. I’m truly blessed to do work that I love every day.”

Dr. Patel treats a wide range of patients, including athletes, seniors, office workers, and expectant mothers. Common conditions include back and neck pain, sciatica, and posture imbalances. The clinic combines chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, spinal decompression, Class IV laser therapy,

cupping, and IASTM (scraping) to reduce pain and restore function.
What sets HealthSource apart is its focus on education and long-term wellness. “I empower patients with tools and strategies to help them feel better and stay better,” she explains. These include exercise plans, nutritional counseling, and even guidance on sleep improvement, supported by
partnerships with wellness brands like Saatva and Pillowise.
With a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Patel believes proper health is about balance in body, mind, and spirit. She creates realistic, sustainable plans tailored to each patient’s lifestyle and goals.
HealthSource is more than a clinic—it’s a community hub for wellness. “We’re a place where people feel heard, valued, and supported,” says Dr. Patel.
HealthSource delivers care that truly makes a difference for those seeking relief and renewed vitality.

Advanced Technologies for Treating Tendonitis
TTendonitis—an inflammation of the tendons—can cause persistent pain and limit mobility, especially in the feet and ankles. Dr. Matthew Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle is committed to staying at the forefront of technology to help patients recover faster and more comfortably.
“We offer EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology)—a non-invasive therapy that uses pressure waves to stimulate healing in damaged tendons. EPAT increases blood flow, breaks up scar tissue, and accelerates the body’s natural repair process—often reducing or eliminating the need for surgery,” says Dr. Wachtler.

Custom orthotics, designed to help redistribute pressure and support proper foot alignment, minimizing strain on the affected tendons.
In some cases, we may incorporate platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, using the patient’s own blood components to promote healing at the cellular level.
“With these advanced options, patients suffering from tendonitis no longer need to settle for temporary relief—the goal is long-term recovery— helping them get back on their feet, pain-free,” states Dr. Wachtler.

While most of her clients are women, she also treats men and children.
“Many people associate pelvic floor dysfunction conditions such as bowel and bladder malfunction with pregnant women, but they can affect anyone.”

D&G Dental of West Orange Doubles Treatment Space to Meet High Demand
SSince opening in 2012, D&G Dental of West Orange has become a trusted destination for comprehensive dental care, known for its excellence in cosmetic and implant dentistry. Due to consistently high demand and a growing patient base, D&G is announcing a major expansion— doubling the number of treatment rooms and taking over the entire second floor of their current building.
“Our reputation for delivering highquality, personalized dental care has fueled this growth,” say Dr. Med Dawoud, owner and founder of D&G Dental. “The newly expanded office allows us to better serve our patients by increasing access and offering an even wider range of procedures under one roof. We are proud to have a talented team of multiple dentists, each with their own niche from cosmetic enhancements to advanced surgical treatments.”
BY MARTTA KELLY, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
The new facility is equipped to provide everything from routine cleanings and professional whitening to high-end cosmetic makeovers and complex surgical procedures, including dental implants. A key feature of the expansion is the addition of an in-house dental laboratory. This gives Dr. Dawoud and the clinical team complete control over the design and fabrication of restorations, ensuring more precise results and faster turnaround times. “Unlike outside labs that have never seen the patient, our on-site lab team works hand-in-hand with our doctors to craft personalized smiles that exceed expectations,” he says.
Additionally, the office now includes a state-of-the-art surgical suite, outfitted with the latest dental technology to support safe, efficient, and comfortable procedures. “With this level of control and innovation, we can maintain the highest standards of care from start to finish,” he says.

Conquer Dry Eyes
Effective Long-Term Relief
DDo you suffer from dry, itchy eyes? You may have a common ailment known as dry eyes. Over-the-counter remedies may offer some temporary relief. However, several treatments can effectively treat the problem of dry eye.
Over-the-counter medications address the symptoms but not the cause of dry eye. Dr. Rustagi’s treatments address the root of the problem and offer long-term relief. One treatment he uses is state-of-the-art light therapy. The IPL Light Therapy is the only FDA-approved therapy that removes the inflammation, providing long-term relief without using drugs or drops.
Tears consist of oil, water, and salt and can evaporate quickly when the oil in the eye is compromised. Without the
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
inflammation, the oil glands can produce the moisture needed to promote healthy tearing. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, light therapy treatment often has added benefits—healthy, glowing skin.
Patients usually require three to four treatments over four months. Within two to three weeks, patients notice the positive effects of this treatment—from more moisture in the eyes to glowing skin. Approximately fifteen percent of the population suffers from dry eye, and the cases are increasing. Many dry eye cases result from aging but also from extended screen viewing on computers and other devices. Laser eye surgery may also contribute to the increase in dry eye, as well as environmental factors, such as wind or dry air.
Transform Your Health with Expert-Guided Weight Loss
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
FFor many struggling to lose weight and keep it off, real success starts with the right medical guidance—and a program built to last. At Endocrine Consultants of Morris County (ECMC), board-certified endocrinologists Dr. Sheera Siegel and Dr. Anna Kissin bring decades of experience treating endocrine disorders— including diabetes, thyroid disease, and osteoporosis—to their innovative weight loss program, Metabolic Lifestyle Solutions.
Originally prescribing GLP-1 medications to treat diabetes, the doctors became early adopters and developed a deep understanding of how these medications work. “We’ve been using these medications for many years with our diabetic patients,” says Dr. Siegel. “We know the ins and outs—what to expect, how to manage side effects, and how to use them effectively in a real-world setting.”
But their approach goes far beyond medication. Their comprehensive program includes lifestyle support from a registered dietitian and a personal trainer—available in person or virtually— who help patients make sustainable changes in nutrition and exercise. “Our goal is not just to help patients lose weight but to give them the tools to keep it off if they choose to taper down or stop taking the medication altogether,” explains Dr. Kissin. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients succeed and feel good in their bodies.”
Now in its second year, the program has helped many patients reach their goals and maintain their progress. “We feel proud of the work we’re doing—it’s thoughtful and evidence-based, and patients are happy with the results,” adds Dr. Siegel.
One of the best ways to prevent long-term eye conditions is to get your eyes checked every year. The progress in eye care in the past twenty years has been tremendous. Optometry is now the front line of eye care.

New Office, Same Heart
Dr. John Paul Tutela Expands His Vision for
Patient-Centered Aesthetic Care
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
TTutela Plastic Surgery has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the official opening of a brand-new, state-of-theart office in East Hanover. Known for his artistry, precision, and deeply personal approach to care, John Paul Tutela, MD, has built a destination where surgical excellence meets modern aesthetic innovation.
Offering both aesthetic and reconstructive solutions, the practice provides a full spectrum of surgical care—from breast and body contouring to advanced cosmetic procedures for both women and men. A signature offering includes the Mommy Makeover: a customized combination of breast lifts, implants, liposuction, and tummy tucks designed to help mothers feel like themselves again. “It’s incredibly meaningful to help women prioritize their needs—often for the first time in years,” says Dr. Tutela.
To support a wider range of services, the office includes a fully equipped procedure suite for minimally invasive in-office treatments performed under local anesthesia. The addition of a full-service medi-spa expands the patient experience even further. Non-surgical options include Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse, along with RF microneedling with PRP, dermaplaning, chemical peels, and laser skin rejuvenation
for fine lines, discoloration, and overall skin tone. Other wellness offerings include medical weight loss injections, IV hydration, and hormone replacement therapy for both men and women, as well as NeoGraft hair restoration.
Every patient begins their journey with a complimentary photo facial analysis and leaves with a customized plan for treatment and skincare—supported by medical-grade products available in-office.
What truly distinguishes Dr. Tutela is more than his surgical expertise—it’s his belief in real, immediate impact. “Surgery lets you fix a problem directly. You see the results, and so does the patient. That’s powerful,” he says. Inspired by his father, also a plastic surgeon, Dr. Tutela brings heart, skill, and vision to every patient journey. Whether he’s restoring confidence after cancer or helping patients rediscover their reflection, his mission remains the same: to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care that helps people love how they look—and feel—from the inside out.

Dr. Kathryn Eckert Guides Patients Through Treatments
A Doctor Who Combines Best Practices with Personalized Care
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
DDr. Kathryn Eckert grew up watching her mother work in healthcare, inspiring her to become a doctor. While attending medical school and progressing through her career, she became very interested in public health and women’s health, and also found she had a passion for surgery.
She combined those interests and today feels fortunate to be able to provide women with meaningful ways to deal with breast issues and breast health, which are her focus. “A big part of what I treat is breast cancer, and my personal goal is to try to be the best guide for patients as they’re going through treatment.”
Dr. Eckert wants to help patients realize that this diagnosis is hopefully just a speed bump and not a roadblock, while also ensuring that they are receiving the best treatment to be able to go on with their lives. “Women are often the cornerstone of families and are used to caring for other people,” she says. “And so, to flip that script and be the patient is really difficult for them.”
A New Jersey native who trained at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, she was happy to return home and join the RWJBarnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center, Center for Breast Health and Disease Prevention. “I’ve been so impressed with the forward thinking and initiative that this system has taken to be on the forefront of providing good quality care to people close to home,” says Dr. Eckert. “There are so many wonderful clinical trials available to patients, and as a system with an academic focus, it enriches the quality of care that we can provide to our patients.”
When you need relief from joint pain, you want nothing less than the highest level of orthopedic care. At RWJBarnabas Health, you’ll find board-certified surgeons using the latest treatments and technology, including robot-assisted joint replacement and other minimally invasive procedures, with physical therapy right on site. Visit rwjbh.org/ortho to learn more.
For Sleep Apnea, Help Can Be Found in the Dentist’s Office
BY MARTTA KELLY
MMany people unaware that help for their chronic snoring and/or sleep apnea can be found in their dentist’s office, although specific dental appliances have been around for years, according to Dr. Amy Tran of The Silverstrom Group in Livingston.
Clients also may not realize that a dentist can observe signs of sleep apnea during a routine exam. “We look for things like airway obstruction, enlarged tonsils, or a long soft palate,” says Dr. Tran, a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. “We don’t make a formal diagnosis but refer them to a physician, who can then refer them back to us for a custom dental appliance that can help them get a good night’s sleep by correcting the problem.”
“
For someone with mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, a custom dental appliance can improve airway breathing, holding the lower jaw and tongue forward, thus allowing air to flow naturally on its own during sleep.
Over the course of a single night, a person with severe obstructive sleep apnea may stop breathing upwards of 240 times in 8 hours,” Dr. Tran points out. “Not only can this disrupt sleep, but it can lead to and exacerbate more serious health issues. Eventually, if left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to cardiovascular problems, diabetes, headaches, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, and many other comorbidities.”
Many people with sleep apnea own a CPAP machine, but not every person can tolerate it well and may lead to patient non-compliance. “The machines, with its mask and hose attachments, can be difficult to adjust, irritating, and inconvenient to use during travel,” she says. “For someone with mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, a custom dental appliance can improve airway breathing, holding the lower jaw and tongue forward, thus
allowing air to flow naturally on its own during sleep. “It’s more convenient and comfortable than a CPAP and therefore, patients are more apt to comply.”

The Power of the Essentials
BY BARRY FARBER
TToo often, we move through life on autopilot, forgetting how remarkable the simple act of living truly is. In a previous column, I shared insights from Morty Davis, author of, Happiness Guaranteed or Your Misery Back. At 96 years old, Morty radiates more vitality and optimism than many people a third of his age. His secret? A relentless focus on gratitude and positivity.
1Meditation
Morty reminds us that just waking up in the morning is a gift—not everyone gets that chance. The ability to see, move, think clearly, and live without pain are miracles we frequently overlook.
His philosophy is simple: Grateful people live better lives.
In a world of constant noise and distraction, stillness is revolutionary. Take 10 minutes a day to sit or stand quietly with no agenda. This brief pause is more than a reset—it’s a return to clarity. When the mind settles, inspiration has space to rise.
2Breathing
We breathe without thinking, yet breath is life’s rhythm. Controlled breathing can lower anxiety, boost oxygen flow, and regulate your heartbeat. Try this simple technique: inhale through your nose for four seconds, hold for four, then exhale slowly through your mouth for four. It’s like hitting the reset button for your nervous system.
3Exercise
Movement is medicine. I design my home so I’m constantly encouraged to move—pull-up bars, free weights, even martial arts gear scattered in different rooms. Whether it’s a structured gym routine or a creative home workout, find what energizes you. Just 30 minutes a day can transform your health and your mood.
Barry Farber
Of course, we all wrestle with everyday problems. But when health slips away, suddenly we’re left with just one real concern. Illness overshadows everything. That’s why taking daily steps to preserve and enhance our well-being is not optional—it’s essential.
Here are five powerful practices that can help fortify your mind, body, and spirit:
4Nutrition
Food is fuel, and quality matters. I follow a disciplined, plant-based diet that works for me— but the key is to find what nourishes you. Emphasize fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Avoid processed junk, excess sugar, and fried foods. Your body will thank you.
5
Transparency
It took me years to learn that living authentically is the gateway to peace. When you stop worrying about what others think and align your actions with your values, life gets lighter. As I often say: “Those who desire nothing possess everything.” Let people see the real you. Honest relationships and a strong sense of self are pillars of true well-being.
These practices are not complex, but their impact is profound. Incorporate them into your daily routine and watch your life elevate. Because when we protect and nurture our health, everything else becomes possible.
