Resident Brings Reiki Healing to Pets

As a child, Montclair resident Rachel Lazarovitch often turned to her grandmother, Leah, when she wasn’t feeling well. Leah, a Reiki master, would gently place her hands where discomfort was felt, and relief often followed.

Although Rachel didn’t fully understand Reiki at the time, those early experiences stayed with her. Years after her grandmother passed away, Lazarovitch rediscovered the gentle, energy-based practice while seeking complementary approaches to support her own health and wellness. The experience eventually inspired her to become a Reiki practitioner herself.

Today, in addition to humans, Rachel offers Reiki sessions for dogs and other household pets, helping animals experiencing anxiety, stress, discomfort, or simply in need of relaxation. While not a replacement for veterinary care, Reiki is often used alongside traditional treatments. Learn more at: alignyourmindhealing.com.

West Orange Resident Breaks Down Barriers for Deaf Dog Owners

For Leah Bornstein of West Orange, dog training is about more than teaching commands. It is about making sure everyone has equal access to the support they need. Completely Deaf and fluent in American Sign Language, Bornstein recognized that many Deaf pet owners struggle to find trainers who can communicate in their preferred language. In response, she founded Born to Be Dog Training LLC, offering services designed to be accessible to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing clients.

A certified dog trainer and behavior consultant, she works with families across the country while advocating for greater accessibility within the pet training industry. Through ASL-based resources and education, Bornstein is helping ensure that both

people and their dogs can build stronger relationships, proving that communication comes in many forms.

West Orange Resident Proves New Beginnings Have No Age Limit

Lori Lefkowitz of West Orange spent years cheering on others while dreaming of one day stepping onto a stage herself. Although music had always been an important part of her life, including composing songs as a teenager, it wasn’t until her 50s that she picked up a bass guitar through an adult program at School of Rock. Terrified before her first performance, she nearly backed out. By the end of the night, however, she couldn’t wait to do it again and discovered a passion that transformed her life.

Today, at 65, Lefkowitz performs throughout New Jersey as the bassist and manager of the cover band Stage Fright, booking gigs, negotiating contracts and energizing crowds. She has also begun taking vocal lessons to expand her talents. Her message to others is simple: it’s never too late to pursue something you’ve always wanted to do.

Livingston Gardener Grows Culture, Wellness, and Community

Livingston resident Monica Gupta has been gardening since she was seven years old. She grows many of her plants from seed, including Indian vegetables such as gourds and okra, along with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and eggplant.

Now training through Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener program, Gupta is learning how to share that passion more widely through volunteer work in gardens, schools, and community projects.

Her backyard harvests are often so abundant that she shares them with friends, neighbors, and members of local gardening groups.

Gardening has taught her that sunlight, patience, and observation are just as important as planting. She says, “Every patch is both a lesson and a joy.” For Gupta, each seedling is part of something larger: wellness, generosity and helping others discover the joy of growing food.

More Than Medicine: Verona Physician Brings Hope to Homebound Seniors

FFor more than four decades, Dr. Thomas McCarrick of Verona has dedicated his life to caring for others as a family medicine physician and medical director at Vanguard Medical Group in Verona. But several years ago, he recognized a growing need that extended far beyond traditional medicine.

As he and his team cared for homebound seniors throughout Essex County, Dr. McCarrick noticed a troubling pattern. Many

of his patients were not only struggling with chronic health conditions but were also facing loneliness, social isolation, food insecurity, and limited access to support systems. Their medical needs could be addressed, but their emotional and social needs often went unmet.

Determined to make a difference, Dr. McCarrick founded Connections at Home, a nonprofit organization focused on helping homebound older adults remain connected, supported, and engaged in their communities. Working alongside social workers, volunteers, and community partners, the organization provides resources, companionship, and assistance designed to improve the quality of life for vulnerable seniors.

Over the past decade, Connections at Home has positively impacted countless lives. The organization has helped seniors learn to use technology to stay in touch with loved ones, connected them with critical services, and provided support to combat the devastating effects of social isolation. Through regular screenings and outreach, the team has witnessed meaningful improvements in participants’ emotional well-being.

Despite ongoing challenges in securing funding, Dr. McCarrick remains deeply committed to the mission. Whether delivering Thanksgiving meals to homebound seniors with his wife or working tirelessly to expand community partnerships, he continues to lead with compassion and purpose.

“These are people you don’t often see,” Dr. McCarrick said. “They’re living quietly in apartments and homes throughout our community. The need is there, and we want them to know they are not forgotten.”

Through Connections at Home, Dr. Tom McCarrick exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond, proving that sometimes the most powerful medicine is human connection.

Montclair Resident is Finding Joy and Purpose Through Advocacy

FFor Montclair resident Austin Halls, living with a rare disability has never defined his limitations. Instead, it has fueled his mission to help others embrace who they are and advocate for a more inclusive world.

Halls was born with Möbius syndrome, an extremely rare neurological condition affecting approximately two in one million people. The syndrome occurs when the sixth and seventh cranial nerves are underdeveloped, resulting in facial paralysis. After four surgeries over eight years, Halls was finally able to smile. He also experiences eye paralysis and relies on eye drops throughout the day because he cannot fully blink. Despite early predictions that he would never eat orally, Halls defied expectations as a young child.

Growing up, Halls rarely saw people with disabilities represented in the media. Everything changed when, as a teenager, he met others with Möbius syndrome at a conference.

“I wanted to be the role model that I never had,” he said.

Today, Halls uses social media, music, modeling, and public speaking to challenge stereotypes surrounding disability and encourage others to embrace their identities. He believes authentic representation matters and hopes that greater visibility in entertainment and fashion will help younger generations see possibilities rather than limitations.

A singer-songwriter, Halls has released two albums and is working on a third project, DISABILITEA, to be released in July, which he says is “spilling the tea on disability joy and the power of loving yourself.” Through his music, he hopes to reshape conversations about disability by focusing on resilience, community, and self-acceptance.

Halls is also a voting member of the Recording Academy’s New York Chapter and has modeled at New York Fashion Week through Runway of Dreams. This organization promotes adaptive fashion and inclusion. He also partners with organizations such as Easterseals to support initiatives advancing equity for people with disabilities.

Whether performing on stage, walking the runway, or sharing his experiences online, Halls is using his voice to help others feel seen, heard, and empowered.

“Never take your smile for granted,” Halls said. “There are people like me who had to wait years before they could slowly begin to smile again.”

For Halls, advocacy means ensuring that no one feels alone and that every person knows their voice matters.

Halls’ music is available on all music platforms. Visit: austinhalls.com

Montclair Weenie Meetup Brings Dachshund Owners Together

WWhat started with one dachshund named Blueberry has grown into a new community for local dog lovers. The Montclair Weenie Meetup was created after Montclair resident Rachel Lazarovitch noticed that while dachshund meetups were popular elsewhere, there wasn’t one close to home.

The group hosts monthly gatherings, with additional meetups planned throughout this summer based on community interest. Most events take place in Brookdale Park near the small dog park, giving dachshunds and their owners a chance to socialize and connect with fellow “weenie dog” enthusiasts.

The meetup has quickly attracted attention from local businesses interested in future collaborations, including dog-friendly venues and

pet-related vendors. Montclair Weenie Meetup also hopes to expand programming to include wellness-focused events and community partnerships.

IMusic and Dance in the Garden

In the humble rooms of Tin Pan Alley in New York City, the musical imaginations of Irving Berlin and other soon-to-be Broadway legends first took shape. As journalist Walter Cronkite once wrote, “Irving Berlin helped write the story of this country, capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives.” His songs became the signature pieces of countless artists who made them their own. From Sinatra to Streisand, Fitzgerald to Clooney, their voices carried Berlin’s melodies into the hearts of generations.

Join vocalist Mari Green for an enchanting summer evening as she brings the golden era of American art song to life with A Fine Romance: The Songs of Irving Berlin and Beyond. Mari’s warm songbird tone will fill Greenwood with melody, nostalgia, and joy in the unparalleled style of Ella Fitzgerald. Generously sponsored by Stone Mountain Properties.

American Freedom Train Exhibit

MMany Americans remember the American Revolution Bicentennial which was observed throughout 1976. During this year of America250, discover the Whippany Railway Museum’s newest exhibit, which shares the story and mementos related to the American Freedom Train (AFT) of 1975-1976.

This steam-powered, 26-car train— which was conceived by New Jersey resident Ross Roland Jr.—was a traveling Bicentennial exhibition that carried more than 500 pieces of Americana, including George Washington’s copy of the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin’s handwritten draft of the Articles of Confederation, the original Louisiana

Purchase, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s robes and Bible, Judy Garland’s dress and ruby slippers from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and a lunar rover.

During its 25,000 mile, 21-month journey, the train visited 138 cities in all 48 contiguous states and was viewed by more than 7 million Americans. The AFT made a display stop at Morristown, NJ at the Mennen Sports arena from July 23-25, 1976, where thousands lined up each day to see the train and its historic contents.

In addition to the American Freedom Train display, the Museum’s operating model railroad features an O gauge version of the AFT, as well as a patriotic-themed model freight train with locomotives painted in Bicentennial-era colors.

Rooted in the idea that humans have an innate connection to nature, it focuses on creating environments that foster well-being by incorporating natural elements into the home.

More than simply adding a few houseplants, biophilic design aims to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. To that end, natural light is a key component, with large windows, skylights, and open floor plans creating bright, airy spaces that feel connected to the surrounding environment. Views of gardens, trees, or other natural landscapes further strengthen that connection.

Materials also play a significant role. For example, wood, stone, bamboo, cork, and other organic textures bring warmth and authenticity to interiors. These materials can be incorporated through flooring, furniture, wall treatments, and decorative accents. In addition, water features, indoor gardens, and living walls are also becoming popular ways to introduce nature into the home.Color palettes inspired by nature—soft greens, earthy browns, sandy beiges, and sky blues—help create a calming atmosphere. In the same way, designers often complement these tones with natural patterns and shapes that mimic those found in the outdoors.

Research suggests that biophilic design can help reduce stress, improve mood, enhance focus, and create a greater sense of comfort. As people spend more time at home, designing spaces that support both physical and emotional well-being has become increasingly important, making these benefits even more relevant.

Whether through abundant natural light, organic materials, or thoughtfully integrated greenery, biophilic design offers a simple yet powerful way to create healthier, more harmonious living spaces—and to deepen our connection to nature.

Discover the Hidden Storage Space in Your Walls

HHomeowners with small kitchens sometimes think that the only way to enjoy more space is to knock down walls and expand the footprint of the room. Instead, a smarter—and often more affordable—solution is to unlock the hidden storage space already available between the studs of your walls. With custom, betweenthe-studs built-ins, you can add storage without sacrificing valuable floor space, making even the most compact kitchen feel more open and efficient.

These shallow, recessed spaces are ideal for both display and storage. Open shelving between studs can showcase beautiful tableware, glassware, or cookbooks, while concealed niches can stylishly stash small appliances like a Cuisinart or neatly store china used for special occasions. Between-studs shelving is especially effective as a kitchen pantry, since the shallow depth is perfect for canned goods, jars, and boxed items—everything is visible and easy to reach, with nothing lost in the back of a deep cabinet.

Smaller niches can be customized to hold spices, hang frequently used utensils, or store and display cookware such as pans and lids. Finished with trim, lighting, or doors that match your cabinetry, these built-ins look intentional and highend rather than purely functional.

By reducing countertop clutter and eliminating bulky cabinets, a small kitchen instantly appears larger, brighter, and more organized. Best of all, between-the-studs custom cabinetry can be tailored to suit any design style—from sleek and modern to warm and traditional—enhancing both the beauty and functionality of kitchens of any size while fitting seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Beyond the Pool Smart Outdoor Add-Ons

Elevate

Summer Living

ABACKYARD POOL MAY BE THE STAR OF SUMMER, BUT IT’S THE SURROUNDING FEATURES THAT TRULY ELEVATE THE EXPERIENCE. THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED POOLSIDE ADDITIONS NOT ONLY ENHANCE CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY BUT ALSO TURN A SIMPLE SWIM AREA INTO A RESORT-LIKE RETREAT.

One of the most practical upgrades is an outdoor shower. Ideal for rinsing off chlorine, sunscreen, or sand, outdoor showers help keep pool water cleaner and reduce the mess tracked into the house. Today’s designs range from sleek, modern fixtures to natural, spa-inspired enclosures that blend seamlessly into the landscape. Many homeowners opt for solar-heated models, which are both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

Dedicated changing areas are another overlooked feature that adds comfort and privacy. Whether it’s a simple cabana, pool house, or curtained nook, having a place to change keeps wet swimsuits out of bathrooms and bedrooms. These spaces can double as shaded lounging areas, offering a cool escape from the midday sun.

Smart poolside storage is essential for keeping the area organized and clutter-free. Weather-resistant benches, deck boxes, and built-in cabinetry provide convenient places for towels, floats, goggles, and cleaning supplies. Organized storage not only improves safety by keeping walkways clear but also helps maintain a polished, inviting look.

Additional enhancements like towel warmers, slip-resistant decking, and strategic outdoor lighting further extend pool enjoyment into the evening hours. Lighting improves visibility and ambiance, while textured surfaces reduce the risk of slips on wet feet.

By looking beyond the pool itself and investing in functional, well-designed accessories, homeowners can create an outdoor space that’s easier to maintain, safer to use, and more enjoyable for family and guests alike. These thoughtful additions transform a backyard pool from a single feature into a complete summer living destination.

Create Backyard Safety with Children and Pets in Mind

FFamilies with children and pets need backyard safety as much as style. A few thoughtful upgrades can help create an environment where everyone can play, relax, and explore with confidence year-round.

Secure fencing is the first line of defense. In particular, fences should be tall enough to prevent climbing or jumping, with self-latching, self-closing gates—especially important around pools. For pet owners, fencing should be free of gaps and extend close to the ground to prevent digging or slipping through.

Surface materials matter more than many homeowners realize. Likewise, slip-resistant decking, textured pavers, and rubberized play surfaces reduce the risk of falls on wet or uneven ground. In play areas, soft surfaces help cushion tumbles, while avoiding loose gravel can prevent choking hazards for small children and paws.

Landscaping choices also play a role in safety. Similarly, opt for non-toxic plants and avoid sharp-edged shrubs or thorny bushes near walkways and play zones. Keep lawns trimmed and remove standing water to reduce the risk of insects and pests that can pose health risks.

Storage and organization are key. Pool chemicals, gardening tools, and grilling accessories should be kept in locked or elevated storage units, safely out of reach. Clearly defined zones for play, pets, and relaxation help minimize accidents and make the backyard easier to supervise.

By prioritizing smart design, safe materials, and proper storage, homeowners can create a backyard that supports carefree outdoor living—where kids can run, pets can roam, and parents can relax knowing the space is built with safety in mind.

Reno’s Appliance Celebrates 75 Years

of Family, Service, and Community

BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY BART GORIN

TTHE STORY OF RENO’S APPLIANCE BEGINS WITH A WORLD WAR II VETERAN, A TALENT FOR REPAIRING RADIOS, AND A DREAM THAT WOULD GROW FAR BEYOND ANYTHING HE COULD HAVE IMAGINED.

Seventy-five years after Reno Cioletti opened a small radio and television repair shop in 1951, the family business he founded has evolved into one of the region’s premier appliance destinations. Despite its growth, advances in technology, and an ever-expanding showroom, the values that built Reno’s Appliance have remained remarkably unchanged.

Today, Reno’s Appliance is led by Reno’s sons, John Cioletti, President and CEO, along with his brothers and business partners, Jim and Paul Cioletti. Together, they have transformed the company into a trusted resource for homeowners, builders, designers, and contractors throughout the tri-state area, offering everything from everyday appliances to luxury kitchen packages featuring brands such as SubZero, Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Viking, and JennAir.

Appliances have become incredibly intelligent. Some ovens can recognize the food you place inside and automatically determine the proper cooking settings. Refrigerators can alert you if a door is left open. The technology keeps evolving.
– John Cioletti
We try to make appliance shopping the least stressful part of a home renovation. We’re a very low-pressure environment. We listen to what people need and help them make the best decisions for their homes.
– John Cioletti

As the company celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, the Cioletti family is also preparing for another milestone: the arrival of a third generation.

John’s daughter Jessica already works alongside her father and uncles, and his daughter Christine will join the business in July after returning to New Jersey, helping ensure the family’s legacy continues well into the future.

“We’re trying to get it to that third generation and keep my father’s legacy going,” says John. “That’s what excites me most about the future.”

The journey began when Reno Cioletti returned home from World War II and used his technical skills as a radio repairman to open a small shop. As technology evolved, so did the business. The company expanded into televisions, appliances, and eventually specialized in the premium built-in appliance market long before it became commonplace.

Today, Reno’s operates from a 16,000-square-foot showroom in Paterson, where customers can explore everything from professional-grade cooking appliances and steam ovens to smart refrigerators, outdoor kitchens, grills, pizza ovens, and the latest AIenabled technology.

“Appliances have become incredibly intelligent,” John says. “Some ovens can recognize the food you place inside and automatically determine the proper cooking settings. Refrigerators can alert you if a door is left open. The technology keeps evolving.”

Despite those advancements, John believes the company’s greatest strength isn’t technology—it’s people.

“We try to make appliance shopping the least stressful part of a home renovation,”

he says. “We’re a very low-pressure environment. We listen to what people need and help them make the best decisions for their homes.”

That customer-first philosophy extends beyond the showroom walls. Reno’s Appliance has built a reputation for giving back to the communities it serves through charitable partnerships and civic involvement.

John serves on the Foundation Board of St. Joseph’s Health, an organization particularly close to his heart. Reno’s has long supported the hospital’s fundraising initiatives, including serving as a signature sponsor of the popular Fashion with Compassion event. The company also supports organizations, including Hope’s Promise, an equine therapy program, the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and numerous local charitable causes.

We try to give back wherever we can. We’re not looking for recognition. We just want to do the right thing and help people.
– John Cioletti

“Life’s been good to my family and me,” John says. “We try to give back wherever we can. We’re not looking for recognition. We just want to do the right thing and help people.”

As Reno’s Appliance looks ahead to its next chapter, John believes his parents would be proud of what their small family business has become.

“My father would be proud,” he says. “What started as a little mom-and-pop store has grown into a major player in the appliance industry. More importantly, we’ve stayed true to who we are. We treat people the way we’d want to be treated.”

Seventy-five years after opening its doors, Reno’s Appliance continues to prove that while products and technology may change, family, integrity, and exceptional service never go out of style.

Harness Micro-Moments for Calm

IIn a world that celebrates productivity and constant motion, calm can feel like a luxury reserved for vacations or weekends away. Yet true balance is often built in much smaller increments. Micro-moments of calm—brief, intentional pauses—help reset the nervous system and bring a sense of ease into even the busiest days.

A micro-moment might last only 30 seconds or a few minutes. It can be as simple as taking three slow, deep breaths before answering an email, stepping outside to feel the sun on your face, or savoring the first sip of coffee without distraction. In these moments, the body receives a signal that it’s safe to soften, which lowers stress hormones and reduces mental overload.

What makes micro-moments so effective is their accessibility. You don’t need special equipment, extra time, or a perfect setting. Because calm can be layered into everyday routines—while waiting in the carpool line, washing dishes, or transitioning between meetings—these moments accumulate over time, creating a noticeable shift in mood, focus, and resilience.

To create more micro-moments, start with awareness. Notice when your shoulders tense or your breathing becomes shallow, and use those cues as reminders to pause. Then pair calming habits with things you already do: a stretch before brushing your teeth, a grounding breath every time your phone rings, or a brief gratitude check while walking.

In a culture that pushes us to do more, micro-moments remind us that peace doesn’t have to be earned. Let them be your cue to pause and find it in the smallest moments— quietly waiting for you to notice.

Healthy After 50: Essential Screenings for Men

TTurning 50 is an important milestone and an ideal time to take an active approach to health. While aging brings natural changes, regular screenings can help identify potential concerns early and support sustained health.

Heart health should be a top priority. Routine monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of heart disease, which remains a leading health concern for men.

Colorectal cancer screening is a further vital preventive measure. Current guidelines generally recommend screening for most adults beginning at age 45. Early detection greatly improves treatment results and can even prevent cancer from developing.

Men over 50 should also discuss prostate health with their health-care providers. Screening decisions should be adapted to individual risk factors, family history, and personal preferences.

Vision and hearing exams become increasingly important with age. Detecting changes early can help preserve quality of life, independence, and safety.

Bone health is often overlooked among men. Screening for osteoporosis may be recommended for those with certain risk factors, helping reduce the likelihood of fractures later in life.

Vaccinations are another key component of healthy aging. Keeping up to date on flu, shingles, pneumonia, and other recommended vaccines can help prevent serious illness.

Finally, don’t underestimate the benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and stress management all contribute to healthy aging.

With routine screenings and healthy habits, men can enjoy greater vitality and independence beyond age 50. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screenings and habits that matter most for you.

Seasonal Skin Reset: Protect, Repair & Glow

TThe season of sunshine—and smart skincare—arrives with summer. Longer days outdoors mean more exposure to UV rays, heat, and humidity, all of which can take a toll on your skin if not managed properly. Start your summer skin reset with protection. Use daily sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours when outdoors. Reach for lightweight, mineral-based formulas that suit warm weather and won’t clog pores.

Hydration is the next key. As temperatures rise, skin loses moisture more quickly. Swap heavy winter creams for gel or water-based moisturizers that hydrate without feeling greasy. Choose ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe to plump

skin while keeping it cool and comfortable.

Sun exposure can also trigger hyperpigmentation and uneven tone. Choose antioxidant serums containing vitamin C or niacinamide to help brighten skin and protect against environmental damage. In the evening, focus on repair— cleanse gently, then use calming ingredients like ceramides or peptides to support the skin barrier overnight.

Finally, don’t forget the oftenoverlooked areas: lips, hands, décolletage, and ears all need SPF and hydration, too. Apply both consistently, and keep your summer skincare simple, effective, and glowenhancing—so your skin looks as good as the season feels.

Is Manual Lymph Drainage the Missing Link to Better Health and Faster Healing?

Most people are familiar with the circulatory system, but few realize the vital role the lymphatic system plays in overall health, immunity, and healing. When the lymphatic system slows down, the body can struggle with inflammation, swelling, fatigue, and slow recovery.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle therapy that stimulates lymph flow through the body’s natural drainage pathways. Unlike traditional massage, MLD targets the lymphatic system just beneath the skin, helping eliminate waste, excess fluid, and toxins.

MLD is highly recommended before and after surgical procedures—especially cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts, and breast surgeries. By reducing swelling, bruising, and fibrosis (scar tissue formation), MLD can dramatically accelerate healing. Some studies suggest that recovery

timelines that once stretched to 18 months may be reduced to as little as six weeks with proper lymphatic support.

Beyond post-surgical care, MLD may help:

• Reduce swelling and inflammation

• Strengthen immune function

• Improve circulation and detoxification

• Relieve symptoms associated with

allergies and sinus congestion

• Support those with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue

• Improve the appearance of cellulite and skin tone

• Promote relaxation, vitality, and overall wellness

Many feel lighter, more energized, and refreshed after treatment. Athletes use MLD for recovery, while others seek it for anti-aging, skin health, and well-being. If you’re feeling tired, swollen, or want to boost your health and appearance, Manual Lymph Drainage may be worth exploring.

Experience the difference. See the results.

What Sets Us Apart

Favorite Appetizers for Your Summer Party

Looking for inspiration for your next summer gathering? We asked three local culinary experts to share one appetizer they’d proudly serve to guests. Their selections are fresh, flavorful and perfect for everything from casual backyard get-togethers to milestone celebrations.

Bruschetta

“For me, our bruschetta is perfect for summer,” says owner Marylee Castronovo. Topped with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic and basil, this classic Italian appetizer is served chilled and designed for sharing. Whether it’s a backyard barbecue, graduation celebration or pool party, its fresh ingredients and vibrant flavors make it an easy crowd-pleaser.”

Half tray serves 8-10; full tray serves 18-20

Quesadilla Selection

“Whether you prefer Steak, Chicken, Short Rib or a classic Cheese Quesadilla, Franklin Steakhouse offers a variety that’s perfect for sharing. Each quesadilla is grilled until golden and crispy, then served with fresh salsa, sour cream and guacamole for dipping. With four delicious options to choose from, there’s something to satisfy everyone around the table.”

Mix and match a variety of quesadillas to create an easy-to-share appetizer platter that’s perfect for parties, family gatherings and game-day celebrations.

Il Tagliere

Inspired by owner Luigino Tripodi’s memories of sharing family meals in Italy’s Campania region, Il Tagliere features imported Italian specialties including Tuscan prosciutto, capocollo, finocchiona, Mortadella from Bologna and smoked pancetta, paired with Gorgonzola Dolce, cured olives and marinated butter beans. It’s an authentic taste of Italy that’s made for sharing.

Comfortably serves 2–4 people as an appetizer or light meal and pairs beautifully with wine.

LOCAL BUSINESSES SUPPORTING LOCAL CAUSES

Now more than ever, it is important that we continue to to support our local businesses. The 16th Annual Best of Essex Contest highlights and celebrates these independent local businesses that support their local communities, local sports teams, and the arts.

You can make a difference! By voting for your favorite locally-owned independent businesses, you’re not just supporting them, but also helping one of three local causes. These causes, with their profound impact on the

community—from providing nutritious food to those in need, rescuing and rehoming animals, to advocating for foster children—are an Inspiration for us all to come together and make a positive change.

CASA OF ESSEX

CASA Essex, operating for nearly four decades, advocates for foster children by pairing dedicated volunteers with them. Led by Executive Director Marla Higginbotham, CASA ensures children in foster care receive personalized support and stability. Volunteers engage monthly with children and collaborate with educators, healthcare providers, and guardians to address all aspects of their well-being. Training and judicial appointment are required for volunteers, who play a crucial role in advocating for children’s best interests inside and outside the courtroom. CASA Essex serves 274 of the county’s 450 at-risk children and continually seeks volunteers and donations to sustain their mission.

Donations are also vital, helping support CASA’s mission and the children they serve. For more information, visit: casaessex.org

TONI’S KITCHEN

Toni’s Kitchen in St. Luke’s Church, Montclair, NJ, has a simple mission: to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.

Toni’s Kitchen tackles suburban food insecurity by embedding nutritious food in community spaces. Led by Executive Director Anne Mernin, it addresses structural issues through partnerships with 60 organizations and initiatives like mobile markets and a food truck. With thousands of volunteers, it runs programs from after-school meals to home deliveries, ensuring all community members have access to healthy food year-round and emphasizing supporting families and seniors. To get involved or donate, visit: https://toniskitchen.org.

The ranch offers a unique foster-to-adopt model where dogs are placed with pre-approved families for a two-week trial period, fostering a 98% adoption success rate. If not adopted, RRR ensures suitable placements and provides ongoing support. Supported by volunteers and a resale shop, RRR focuses on veterinary care and donations to sustain operations, having saved over 800 dogs since inception.

The Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Resale Shop on Bloomfield Avenue funds the rescue, with profits going directly to the animals. Monetary donations, volunteer time, and supplies are always needed. Stay HUNGRY

II was recently talking with a friend about the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs when he made an interesting observation. He said the Spurs could win a championship because they’re still hungry. They have something to prove. They’re chasing a goal they haven’t yet achieved. The Knicks, on the other hand, might not be as hungry after winning a title because they already have the ring.

Whether his prediction proves true remains to be seen, but it raises an important question: What happens when we stop being hungry?

In sports, business, and life, hunger is often the difference between growth and stagnation. It fuels effort, persistence, and resilience. The danger is that success can sometimes create complacency—and complacency is the silent killer of potential.

Over the last several months, I was immersed in the high school production of The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree. Like creating the book and animated series before it, the experience reminded me of a lesson I’ve learned throughout my career: The joy is not in arriving. The joy is in pursuing. As Miguel de Cervantes wrote, “The road is much better than the inn.”

The moment the curtain came down on the final performance, I felt grateful—but I also realized something else. To stay inspired and growing, there must always be another mountain to climb.

Here are three ways to stay hungry:

1. Let Rejection Fuel You

When pitching Little Billy to publishers, I received more than 30 rejection letters. I kept every one of them. They remind me that other people’s opinions are not the final verdict on your potential. Success celebrates what we know. Failure teaches us what we need to learn.

2. Set Bigger Goals

The day after the play ended, I wrote down five new ambitious goals. Why? Because challenge creates growth. I’ve often said, “The work will teach you how to do it.” Growth requires motion, and motion requires purpose.

3. Stay Humble and Grateful

Gratitude keeps success in perspective while humility keeps us learning. Watching children laugh, smile, and become fully engaged in the story on opening night reminded me why we pursue our dreams in the first place.

As Dwayne Johnson said:“Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room.” That’s advice worth remembering. Stay humble. Stay grateful. And above all—stay hungry.
