Why is Everyone Talking About Menopause Now?
“I wake at 3am and just lie there until the alarm.”
“I’m exhausted all day, then wide awake the moment my head hits the pillow.”

What do these women have in common? They are moving through menopause, and they are done being told it is all in their heads. Every day about 6,000 American women reach menopause, roughly 1.3 million a year, and more than 8 in 10 will have real symptoms. For about 1 in 4, they are severe enough to disrupt daily life. Reimagining Maternal Wellness in Roseland
Maria Clemente Morresi of Roseland, owner of Reimagined Mind Counseling & Consultation, and co-founder of the Perinatal Resource Collaborative, works to help mothers feel more supported during pregnancy and postpartum by reimagining the architecture of maternal wellness. Originally inspired by her work providing trauma-informed mental health care to underserved teens in Jersey City, Morresi expanded her mission to support the motherhood journey.
Through her nonprofit efforts, she connects mothers with mental health support they might not otherwise access and finds joy in curating local Essex County gatherings where moms can build supportive “villages” and foster connection. Throughout the adventure, children are introduced to coping tools and age-appropriate cognitive reframing strategies that promote resilience, confidence, and positive self-talk.
D’Amato, a trauma therapist, mother, and wife, drew inspiration for the book from her professional experience and her love of reading with her son. Cedar Grove Parish Answers Growing Local Need

WWhen St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Cedar Grove received the Governor’s Medal for Faith-Based Service, parish leaders saw it not as recognition for one event or initiative, but for thousands of quiet acts of kindness happening behind the scenes every day.
Through the parish’s S.O.S. Shepherds Of Service ministry, hundreds of volunteers are helping feed the hungry, support homeless individuals, assist the working poor, and comfort children and the elderly throughout Essex County and beyond. What began as a parish outreach effort has grown into a largescale, grassroots ministry now offering more than 100 volunteer opportunities for adults and dozens more for families.
“We felt called to meet the dramatically increased needs of our immediate neighbors,” said Pat Braun, leader of the ministry. “People are struggling with food insecurity, homelessness, and isolation, and we knew we had to respond.”
Today, 250 to 300 parishioners participate in S.O.S. activities. Volunteers prepare emergency meals, serve lunches, assemble hygiene kits and “blessing bags,” hand-knit items for children and homeless individuals, visit elderly Sisters of Charity, send gifts to homeless pregnant women, and create family-style experiences for homeless youth. The ministry also supports pediatric patients at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital through craft activities designed to ease anxiety and bring moments of joy.
In recent years, the parish expanded its partnerships with organizations including Toni’s Kitchen, MESH, Covenant House, Bridges Outreach, Eva’s Kitchen, and the Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation in Cedar Grove.
One especially meaningful part of the ministry focuses on making every interaction personal. Emphasis is on in-person service to people in need, and handwritten notes are included in meal bags and care packages so recipients know someone truly cares about them.
“If everybody just does one thing, cumulatively it becomes something enormous,” Braun said.
The ministry welcomes participants from all backgrounds, including students, Scout troops, and residents from neighboring towns. While the Governor’s Medal brought recognition, parish leaders say the true reward comes from watching compassion strengthen both the community and the people they serve.
At St. Catherine of Siena, service is not simply an occasional project. It has become a way of life.

Helping Students Build Their Own Road Map

FFor Rosanna Guzman of Montclair, one moment in college changed the trajectory of her life. As a first-generation student from an underprivileged background, she had spent years working hard without fully realizing how many opportunities existed beyond her immediate world. But after being accepted into an honor society, something shifted.
For the first time, she felt seen, supported and connected to possibilities she never knew were within reach. Years later, that experience became the inspiration for Kora Kora, a nonprofit she founded with her husband, Bernardo, to help students gain the guidance and support they once lacked themselves.
Founded in 2024, Kora Kora is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on helping students in grades 9-12 build confidence, leadership skills and career readiness through mentorship and hands-on programming.
“Our goal is to provide the road map, training and mentorship we did not have growing up,” Rosanna said.
Designed to serve as a bridge between the classroom and the real world, Kora Kora combines mentorship, financial literacy, career exploration, emotional intelligence and community engagement under one umbrella. Rosanna describes the organization as both a learning environment and a “safe haven” where students can grow personally and professionally while discovering their strengths and future goals.
Kora Kora’s Horizon Program, beginning in late June, is geared toward student athletes and focuses on leadership, branding, networking and financial literacy. The nonprofit’s Achievers Program, launching in September, includes mentorship, resume building, mock interviews, community service projects and possible job shadowing opportunities with professionals aligned with students’ interests.
Based in Montclair, Kora Kora serves students throughout northern New Jersey with tiered pricing and subsidized options funded by donations and fundraising. At its core, Kora Kora is designed to help students feel seen, supported and capable of building a future they may not have imagined for themselves.
Students also participate in hands-on workshops, teamwork exercises and real world scenarios designed to help them think critically, communicate effectively and develop what Rosanna describes as a “CEO mindset.”
For Rosanna and Bernardo, the mission is simple but deeply personal: helping young people realize that success should not depend on luck alone, but on access, support and someone willing to believe in their potential.

Moms Anonymous Brings Low-Pressure Meetups
and Little Ones in Livingston
WWhat began as a small gathering of new moms in a Hoboken park has grown into a North Jersey community connecting families through playdates, coffee meetups, and themed experiences for babies and toddlers. Moms Anonymous, founded by Cassondra Perez after noticing many mothers struggling to find support during postpartum life, is now bringing monthly mommy meetups to Livingston through a partnership with Our Little Fingers.
Designed primarily for children ages 6 months to 5 years, the gatherings offer a relaxed environment where parents can connect while little ones enjoy age-appropriate activities. Events include sensory

Toni’s Kitchen’s Kids in the Kitchen Summer Love Program Combines Service, Learning and Community Impact
MMiddle school students can spend part of their summer giving back through Toni’s Kitchen’s Kids in the Kitchen’s Summer Love Program, a hands-on summer service camp initiative designed for students entering grades 6 through 8.
Held over four separate weeks in July, the program gives participants an inside look at how Toni’s Kitchen supports local families facing food insecurity, especially during the summer months when school meal programs are unavailable. Students will help prep food in the kitchen, assist at neighborhood mobile markets, work in the organization’s community garden, and learn about the different populations affected by hunger, including children, seniors, and families.

Toni’s Kitchen, a Montclair-based food ministry that provided more than 2 million meals in 2025, serves children, families, and seniors across Essex County. Organizers hope the experience helps young people better understand community needs while encouraging compassion, leadership, and service.

What happens when a stand-up comedienne is also a licensed therapist? Livingston psychotherapist and comedienne Jennifer Bahler is inviting others to explore life’s challenges through humor, storytelling, and creative expression at a virtual introductory Comedy Therapy Workshop.
Bahler, founder of Livingston Psychotherapy Associates, has performed stand-up comedy since 1998 and developed the concept after realizing humor helped both her and others navigate difficult life transitions, from parenting and adulting to aging and grief. Her approach blends humor with healing, though no experience in either is necessary.
Participants will take part in exercises designed to help them reframe experiences, identify emotional blocks, and find humor in everyday struggles in a supportive, lowpressure environment.

AA kid from West Orange graduates high school. He’s a creative kind of kid; he’s in a band, he attends Parsons School of Art but, as he says, he didn’t last very long. He realized that he’d have to make money to live the kind of creative life he wanted to. So at a very young age, he bought some real estate. And then bought more. And as a hands-on landlord he learned about how to remediate lead paint, and mold, and asbestos, and damage from fire and water ultimately starting a company which focussed on that for other landlords.
Selling the company in 2020 gave him some free time for one of his passion of mountain biking, which he says: “never disappoints.” But it was in 2022 that he returned to photography, a passion he’d put aside years ago. Throwing himself into it, he watched videos, took workshops, essentially treating it like a job. He’d liked the idea of being a painter, but, he says, he was “a terrible terrible painter.” He found himself starting with original photographs, then painting on them, cutting, burning them with a creme brûlée torch and winding up with what is startling, innovative imagery.

Kids On The Boardwalk, an image made in 2023 is typical Schlosser. He photographed some kids on the Point Pleasant boardwalk near where he maintains a vacation home. He decided to add some painting to it. But being right-handed, he thought he’d paint it with his left hand. The forced lack of control adds an interesting conceptual twist to this multi-media work. A wrinkle few artists would attempt.
The first time Schlosser made photographs in the rain in NYC, he captured this person walking down the stairs at The High Line. He projected
this image onto a background he made of assembled pieces of painted cardboard and a torn piece of a Shop Rite shopping bag. The background and the projected image were then photographed together to create No Quarter in 2024. We see the figures and feel somewhat like voyeurs on the street as we watch the two solitary figures. The image is rich with Schlosser’s unasked questions. We speculate if they’re about loneliness.
In a very destructed and reconstructed piece, Yellow Tree, also made in 2024, Schlosser tore up two prints. Painting pieces of them and reassembling the image after a fashion, he transports us to an almost Bizarro landscape. We’re not sure where we are, although it reminds us of someplace we’ve known. Likewise, lost in the nuances of color and densities changing in an otherworldly way. Novel, and yet familiar.
Looking through a collection of Schlosser’s very creative work, we find ourselves both anxious to look to the next piece, and at the same time, unable to tear ourselves away from the one we’re viewing at the moment. How are you providing these types of results?
We’re doing full face rejuvenation, so we’re not just approaching one specific area of the face. We’ve been using a lot of biostimulators, which trigger skin’s natural collagen production to restore firmness, thickness, and elasticity.
These are different from normal fillers that use hyaluronic acid because instead of instant volume, the results from biostimulators are more gradual as your fibroblasts build new collagen around the injected material.
This helps with skin thickness and adds bounce, minimizes fine lines and creases, and improves overall texture and radiance.
Why is the production of collagen so important?
Collagen is the main structural protein that keeps our body’s tissues strong and able to repair themselves. When our body makes healthy collagen, our whole body functions better. Unfortunately, as we age, our collagen production declines. So if we can help stimulate that, it’s going to keep skin firm, smooth and elastic.
What has the feedback been?
Clients have been very happy with the results. While biostimulators don’t replace hyaluronic acid fillers, I believe it’s the combination of the two that have clients looking a lot more natural and less made up. And, this approach is actually longer lasting, usually about two to three years.
I understand you also run an injectable training program for licensed medical professionals. Please tell us more about that.
Dr. Kelly’s Injectable Class is a physician-led course that brings real-world clinical and aesthetic experience together. We have live models, so trainees don’t just watch, but get to inject under hands-on supervision. We find that this approach leaves them with more practical muscle memory.

DDr. Michael Davidson has one goal in mind - making the dental visit as comfortable as possible. He had a wonderful pediatric dentist who took the time to make him feel comfortable, and that impression is what drives Dr. Davidson’s entire philosophy when treating people.
“I always liked the idea of becoming a dentist because I wanted to put people at ease in a place where fear runs high,” he says. “It makes all the difference in the world.”
After working for a group practice that eventually adopted a corporate-like structure where patients were just a number, he decided that wasn’t the way he wanted to practice. So, in 2021, he acquired Edgemont Dental Arts.

Step Into Comfort: How to Prevent and Treat Plantar Fasciitis
PPlantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, affecting adults across all activity levels. According to Dr. Wachtler, specialist at Cedar Grove Foot and Ankle, the condition develops when the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue supporting the arch of the foot— becomes irritated or inflamed.
“The classic sign of plantar fasciitis is sharp heel pain with your first steps in the morning,” says Dr. Wachtler. “Many patients tell me it feels like a stabbing pain that improves as they move, but often returns later in the day.”
Common causes include overuse, wearing unsupportive footwear, prolonged standing, tight calf muscles, flat feet, high arches, and highimpact activities such as running.
Weight changes and aging can also increase strain on the plantar fascia. “In many cases, plantar fasciitis develops gradually,” Dr. Wachtler explains. “People often ignore early discomfort until it starts interfering with daily life.”
Treatment typically begins with conservative care. “Our goal is to reduce inflammation while correcting the underlying mechanical issues,” says Dr. Wachtler. Stretching, custom orthotics, supportive shoes, physical therapy, and activity modification are often effective. With proper treatment and early intervention, most patients experience significant relief and can return to painfree movement.

All the World’s a Stage
JJust like a theatrical performance that eventually comes to an end, human life is temporary. What we choose to do with the one life we are given is entirely up to us. How do we leave the world better than we found it? To gain a glimpse into the stage we all perform on, I sat down this month with Scott Patteson, Director of Theatre Arts at Livingston High School. Scott and his Theater 1 and 2 classes will be expanding my children’s book and animated series into a stage production on June 15th at 7pm at the Livingston High School Auditorium—Free General Admission.
Barry Farber: Tell me about your background and how you got started.
Scott Patteson: I grew up in California’s Bay Area and first became involved in theatre around fifth grade. My passion for it really developed in high school. Our theatre program was fairly bare bones—nothing like what we have today at Livingston High School—but I loved seeing community productions and traveling into San Francisco to watch plays and musicals.
I knew I wanted to pursue theatre in college, but back then there weren’t the same coaching opportunities that students have today. I attended University of California, Los Angeles and majored in theatre. After graduating, I earned my Master’s degree in acting from a graduate acting program in San Diego that’s often considered one of the West Coast equivalents of New York University in terms of professional actor training.
After graduate school, I returned to Los Angeles where I worked with an agent and manager, auditioning for various projects. I did that for several years, but eventually realized I had fallen out of love with the art form once it became more about networking, branding, and selling myself. That part of the industry just wasn’t fulfilling to me.
Around that time, I met my now-husband in Los Angeles. As we became more serious about building a family and creating stability, we moved to New York City because he was working for Howard Stern. I began teaching at a charter school in Manhattan while earning my teaching certification at night.
Then COVID happened. We moved to the suburbs, and two weeks later I was offered the position at Livingston High School. It all felt very serendipitous.
BF: What was it like when you first arrived at Livingston High School?
SP: When I came to the school, there wasn’t yet a formalized theatre program with consistent leadership. Different directors and English teachers would oversee productions, but there wasn’t a long-term structure in place.
At the same time, Livingston has a rich theatrical history. Alumni include Jason Alexander, Nikki James, and Leslie Kritzer—all incredibly successful performers. So there absolutely was a foundation here, but the goal became creating continuity and elevating the department into a more comprehensive and sustainable program. That’s what we’ve been building over the last six years.
BF: What drives your passion to work with these students every day?
SP: It’s the best job in the world. I get to collaborate, create, and explore performance with students every single day. It’s not just about acting—I’m able to expose them to all the different components that go into this art form. We have fun while also exploring what it means to be alive. There’s a deeper purpose to it for me, and I honestly can’t imagine teaching anything else. I love it.
BF: Tell me about the skills you’re teaching and how they apply not only to the stage, but also to life.
SP: There are certainly technical and performance-based skills that give students purpose and ownership, but the most valuable lessons are often the soft skills they develop through collaboration.
Theatre teaches creative thinking, flexibility, critical thinking, improvisation, teamwork, and problem-solving. At its core, theatre is really about collaboration and solving problems together—and those are skills students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
In fact, some of the top business schools in the country, including Stanford University and Yale University, have incorporated improvisation into their curriculums because it teaches people how to build on one another’s ideas, stay present, think creatively, and adapt quickly.
These skills are incredibly transferable. Storytelling and confidence are essential in every profession.
I always tell my students: your power is your authenticity. For a long time, I struggled with my own authenticity, and theatre became the one space where I could truly express myself freely and feel accepted. In today’s world—especially with social media—authenticity becomes part of your identity and your personal brand. Whatever makes you uniquely you should be celebrated, not hidden. Theatre gives students the freedom to do exactly that.
BF: I’d like to thank you for allowing me to meet your students and observe parts of the creative and casting process to see what’s truly involved.
Tell me about your vision for the production of The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree and what audiences can expect from the show.
SP: From the beginning, we discussed creating something simple and minimalist—a production that could easily travel to elementary and middle schools because the themes and values in the story are so important. We want as many young people as possible to experience it.
One creative solution we developed involves five large black cubes that can be painted differently on each side and rotated to create new scenes and environments throughout the show. It becomes both a practical and artistic challenge: How many sides can we use? When do we rotate them? Can they be stacked to create entirely new settings? It’s creative problem-solving while also keeping the production portable.
Because this is a children’s production, we’re also incorporating hand puppets for some of the characters. Puppetry immediately evokes children’s theatre and gives audiences another visual layer to engage with. It helps younger viewers connect with the characters and the storytelling.
What makes this project especially exciting is that we’re adapting a local author’s children’s book into a world premiere stage production. That’s a unique opportunity for students.
The students are incredibly excited, and everyone has an important role to play—whether they are actors, designers, stage managers, assistant directors, or publicists. Everyone is contributing creatively, and we’re excited to share the production with the community on June 15th at 7pm in the Livingston High School auditorium.
BF: What is your definition of success?
SP: I’m a Scout, and one of the core principles of scouting is to leave a place better than you found it. That has become my philosophy in life as well: leave your community better than you found it, and leave the world better than you found it.
As I get older, I think more about legacy— about the impact we leave behind and how people will remember us. Success, to me, is making a positive difference in the lives of others and improving the world around you in some meaningful way.
If you can do that, then you’ve truly been successful.
