Livingston Woman Launches Group for Women Navigating Career Change After 50
After facing job loss and frustration in the job market, Elyse Shermer of Livingston has founded a meetup group called WTF: Women Turning 50ish. The group meets monthly and provides a space for women who are 50ish to connect, share experiences, and support one another through career transitions. What began as a casual meetup with just a few friends has grown into a steady core group of women. WTF isn’t a traditional networking group—it’s a safe, judgment-free zone to talk candidly about ageism, career reinvention, and other professional hurdles. While some members are unemployed, others feel overlooked or undervalued in their current roles. The goal is simple: to find strength in community and know you’re not alone. The group welcomes new members and encourages honest conversation—no résumés, business cards, or registration required. For details on the next meeting date and location, send an email to: erabinowitz2000@gmail.com.
Local Songwriters Team Up for Indie EP
What started with a quirky call for songs about soup turned into a full-on collaboration between Essex County musicians Roe O’Brien and Max Rauch, who met during the pandemic and recently released a four-song indie EP titled Weekend at Mauchie’s...Vol. 1. Written and recorded in just five days in
Max’s West Orange basement studio, the genre-blending project covers everything from dreamy pop to indie rock. Roe takes the lead on vocals, while both artists swap instruments and songwriting duties. Though they aren’t performing live, the duo created the EP as a purely creative studio venture—one they hope will inspire others. “We’re just two local artists doing what we love,” said Roe. “It felt like songwriter summer camp.” Released through Max’s label, Pizza Bagel Records, the EP is streaming everywhere. With roots in Nutley and West Orange, this homegrown collaboration proves that big ideas can start small—and sound great.
Glen Ridge Athlete Honored for Service and Leadership
John Leone, a rising senior at Glen Ridge High School, was recently awarded the Bronze Congressional Award for completing 100 hours of community service. Presented through the Congressional Award Program, a national initiative created by the U.S. Congress, the honor recognizes initiative, service, and achievement in youth. As one of only two local recipients, John was honored for his impact across the Montclair and Caldwell communities.
His volunteer work included hosting bingo at Van Dyk Nursing Home, organizing volunteers to help out with food drives at Sacred Heart Church and Weequahic High School, creating Christmas-themed arts and crafts at Caldwell Care Group, and more.
These efforts were carried out through Athletes for Good, a student-led club John co-founded with fellow lacrosse player Kieran Lieber. The club provides volunteer opportunities for student athletes hoping to strengthen the community.
A 2025 state champion on Glen Ridge’s lacrosse team and captain of the football team, John is committed to continuing both his athletic and service journeys at Rollins College.

This summer, Adam Sandler was popping up across New Jersey like a real-life game of Whac-A-Mole — or better yet, “Where’s Waldo?” One of the biggest surprises was Nana’s Deli in Livingston, where Sandler and his crew transformed the space into an old-fashioned deli for scenes in the upcoming Netflix film Don’t Say Good Luck, starring his younger
TAdam Sandler Films at Nana’s— Livingston’s Own Hollywood Moment
daughter Sunny Sandler alongside Steve Buscemi, Melanie Lynskey, Bebe Neuwirth, and Max Greenfield.
For three days, Nana’s became a full movie set. The windows were repainted with “Birenbaum’s, EST 1985,” and retro props showcased Jewish deli staples like matzo ball soup, Reubens, and knishes.
Owners Marc and Jason Dworkin and Jason’s fiancée Fern Felsenheld, said the production team was a joy to work with, and Sandler couldn’t have been more downto-earth. Locals gathered to watch, snap photos, and soak in the moment. Hollywood came to Livingston and left behind a summer memory the town will never forget.
Stuffed with Love: VeronaTeens Deliver Comfort to Seniors
his summer, Verona High School rising juniors Elena Spong and Ariana Lelio delivered 75 stuffed animals and 56 handwritten cards, created by members of the school’s Sending Sunshine club, to residents at Complete Care at Cedar Grove. The donations were part of a community project the friends launched to help seniors feel supported and cared for and to spark old memories.
Through their research, they discovered that seniors, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer’s, often lack regular visitors and emotional support. Wanting to make a difference, they reached out to their school and local communities for donations.
Elena and Ariana hope to continue the “meaningful and rewarding” project in the future. “We just wanted them to feel loved,” they said. “It’s a small thing that can mean a lot.”
Charm Bar Brings Personalized Jewelry to the Pop-Up Scene
Montclair State University senior Bilana Uluengin and her sister Diypse Duman have reimagined custom jewelry with their Charm Bar—a mobile pop-up where customers handpick charms to create personalized necklaces, bracelets, pins, and more. Inspired by their Turkish heritage, many of the stainless-steel charms are handselected directly from Turkey along with more accessories and jewelry. Since launching in 2020, the mobile Charm Bar has become a favorite at birthdays, bachelorette parties, and brand activations. Their most notable collaboration to date was with Youth to the People (YTTP) in NYC, where they created over 700 custom charms for the launch of YTTPs new sunscreen. They’ll be returning to NYC this holiday season for their first year in the Herald Square Market. To book an event or attend one of their 50+ upcoming pop-ups, visit @ trueascend on Instagram, or find them at the newly reimagined Lackawanna Station in Montclair.

Local Animal Therapist Gave a Rescue Pup His Voice and the Strength to Run Again
WWhen an 8-month-old doodle mix was found abandoned on Route 280 earlier this year with his muzzle cruelly tied shut and his femur shattered, it was unclear if he’d ever run or play again. Rescuers named him Leo Lupo and quickly raised funds for emergency surgery. But after the procedure, one critical piece of his recovery remained: physical therapy.
Enter Anthony Schena, CCAT (Certified Companion Animal Therapist), founder of Alpha Animal Rehab and Fitness in West Caldwell, who stepped in to help, free of charge.
“Leo had been through so much,” said Schena. “He needed a chance to heal fully, not just survive.”
Leo began an intensive two-month rehabilitation program that included Class IV Laser Therapy, Shockwave Therapy, manual joint work, and sessions on the underwater treadmill to rebuild strength safely. At first, he was shy and hesitant. But soon, Leo was joyfully bounding into the clinic, tail wagging and paws ready for play.
“Seeing that spark return—that’s why I do this,” said Schena. “He became a puppy again.”
What many pet owners don’t realize is that animal physical therapy exists, and it’s transformative. Whether a pet is recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or aging, PT can reduce pain, restore mobility, and extend quality of life.
Schena knows this firsthand. Inspired by his own dog Miles’ recovery from orthopedic injuries, the former human physical therapist retrained as a CCAT and launched Alpha in 2022 to bring expert, compassionate care to local pets.
Despite its proven success, the field remains under the radar.
“Most people still don’t know this kind of care is even an option,” said Schena. “But I’ve seen dogs act years younger after rehab. It changes lives for the pets and their families.”
Leo’s recovery is now complete. His adoptive family says he’s thriving and finally able to just be a dog again.
To Schena, that’s the greatest reward.

Teen Builds Youth-Led Innovation Hub to Empower Future Changemakers
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
MMost high schoolers present ideas in classrooms. Ruhaan Munjuluri, a junior at Livingston High School, created a space where teens share their visions with real-world leaders such as business professionals, professors, and public figures who help them bring those ideas to life.
In 2023, Ruhaan launched Young Minds Big Ideas (YMBI), a youth-led incubator dedicated to teaching students financial literacy and entrepreneurial thinking with a mission rooted in social impact. The program has quickly grown to 26 chapters across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York, with more than 160 active members.
“We take students’ ideas and visions,” Ruhaan explains, “and through financial literacy, pitch competitions, workshops, philanthropic events, and partnerships with local businesses, we help turn those ideas into reality. It is almost like venture capital for students and for a good cause.”
One of the program’s signature initiatives is the Think Tank Event, a Shark Tankstyle pitch competition. This year’s theme, Accessibility in Business, inspired 65 submissions from students tackling challenges like language barriers and physical or mental accessibility. The top five teams were selected to present to a panel of distinguished judges including Isha Battu, producer at Good Morning America; New Jersey Senator John McKeon;
Columbia professor Dave Haber; biotech entrepreneur Dr. Prashant Pandya; and Livingston Councilman Michael Vieira.
The winning pitch, Scan N Speak, developed by Rhea Shah of Livingston, uses AI and QR codes to provide multilingual audio product descriptions. It helps non-English speakers and visually impaired shoppers access product information independently. To bring the app to life, YMBI raised $10,200, and several small businesses across New Jersey are already piloting it.
Two other YMBI incubator-funded ventures include Printing Pathways, which uses 3D printing to create assistive devices for senior centers and hospitals, and Manam Hridaya, a rural education initiative in India, which delivers core subject and digital literacy lessons to underserved communities.
YMBI also runs Coffee Chats, a financial literacy and entrepreneurship series that has reached over 240 students, and organizes service initiatives like repair cafés and donation drives, connecting business education with community giving.
Ruhaan is now working with Senator McKeon to advocate for entrepreneurship to be recognized as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway in New Jersey public schools. YMBI is also producing a national resource guide to share tools and inspiration with over 1,000 high schools.
At just 17, Ruhaan Munjuluri is not just building a platform. He is building a movement.

YYou know that thing when you look at a cloud and you see a horse, or a face, or something? You’ve done it. We’ve all done it. It’s a real thing, a psychological phenomenon called Pareidolia. And It’s at the heart of the remarkable paintings of West Orange resident J Steven Patton. Prior to earning a degree in Fine Art from the College of New Jersey, Patton studied privately as a teenager while taking classes in high school. But is often the case, making a living in another discipline took precedence until he retired in 2019 when he returned to a love of painting full time.
His method fascinates. Patton starts with an underpainting of randomly applied paint with no plan other then creating intricately patterned designs. At that point the Pareidolia happens. “Once I discover the outline of the story in the canvas it begins to tell its tale,” he says. It is then that the recognizable images are painted. “I let the canvas speak and guide my hand as I fill the chapters with color. The hues are applied by hand, not brush, making the process even more intimate and authentic.” Using blue shop towels to apply the paint he finishes edges with charcoal or pastels.
We absolutely love the whimsy of The Girl And Two Goats, a 36x36 oil on canvas painted in 2024. He says he started with the curve of the girls back, followed the line, and then found the two goats. We wonder whether they are hers, or has she randomly met them on the road.
It was when we were looking at O! For A Horse With Wings, a 48x48 oil on canvas, painted in 2023, that Patton pointed out that he often turns the underpinned canvases “this way and that way” as he looks for the story in the underpainting to appear. “Typically it starts with one or two things” he says. And in this case it started with the horse. We think it’s remarkable how despite the influence of his unconscious, the images found in the random swirls of underpainting end up as artfully composed images in the final paintings. Or maybe it’s because of it? We love how the horse looks a little sad that it lacks the wings to fly it’s owner across the body of water they face.
Patton’s unconscious and the underpainting has found us a woman in mid-prayer in Lament, 36x36 inch oil on canvas painted in 2023. Is the onion tower behind her suggesting we are in Eastern Europe in a rural village? We can only imagine what has inspired her grief. We love the softness of the countryside and punctuation of the trees.
It seems like every time we look at Patton’s paintings, we find more questions, and more answers. Maybe you will as well. Next time you have a free moment, stop and look at some clouds. We have, and each time we are reminded of Patton and his paintings.

A Passion for Landscaping
Make your property the envy of your neighbors
Kevin Macken

KKEVIN MACKEN HAS ALWAYS LOVED BEING OUTDOORS. AS A YOUNG BOY, HE PICKED APPLES FOR A NEIGHBOR FOR TWO CENTS APIECE. LATER, HE ASKED NEIGHBORS IF THEY NEEDED THEIR YARDS MOWED AND PUT UP FLYERS IN LOCAL STORES.
“I took some classes to get my pesticide license, and then opened K. Macken Landscaping the year after I graduated from high school,” he says. “Since then, I’ve taken numerous classes for planting techniques, landscape lighting, pruning, and business management.”
Now in business for 20 years, the West Caldwell company has grown from a one-man, one-truck operation to nine trucks and more than 12 crew members, some of whom have been with him for over 15 years. Specializing in plantings and landscape design, K. Macken Landscaping continually invests in training its crew members to stay up-to-date with industry developments.
“We’re not just your mow-and-go company,” says Kevin. “We’re looking to maintain your whole property and give you the best experience possible, so when you come home, you say, ‘Wow, my yard looks great.’”

A Passion for Landscaping
Every customer receives a detailed maintenance plan which includes mowing, pruning, mulching, and fertilizing. When designing a property, customers can view 2D and 3D renderings before any work begins. And, if something isn’t right, they’ll fix it.
“We’re going to stand behind our work,” he says. “We don’t just disappear after the job’s done.”
Kevin and his crew take pride in developing relationships with customers. “We’re friendly, communicative, and responsive, and we also treat every home as if it’s our own.”
K. Macken Landscaping also provides seasonal flowers for local restaurants. “We do all of their flower pots for spring, autumn, and the holiday season,” he says. “We also create custom flower pots to enhance our customers’ outdoor entrances and patios. Whether they want a pop of color or a monochromatic look, we work with customers to make their visions a reality.”

Kevin’s wife, Heather, helps pick out all the materials for the flower pots and assists with the day-to-day operations. Their son, 7-year-old Cooper, will sometimes come out on jobs so he can learn what his mom and dad are doing.
The family also enjoys being involved in the community. “It’s where our business is, and I believe in giving back as much as possible,” says Kevin. “We’re very well known at the West Caldwell Trunk-or-Treat, and we take part in the Touch-ATruck event that the town hosts. We also recently helped a local student with his Eagle Scout project at one of the local schools.” Kevin also volunteers as a coach with some of the kids’ teams in town.
“We’re very thankful for our clients who support us day in and day out by giving us business and trusting us with overseeing the properties that they come home to every day,” he says.
Kevin is also extremely thankful for the crew’s hard work, dedication, and talent. “We have team-building events to show our appreciation,” he says.
Check out some of K. Macken Landscaping’s impressive designs by visiting its website, Instagram, and Facebook pages, and also sign up for its monthly newsletter.
“We have almost 265 five-star Google reviews, which I think speaks volumes for the service we provide,” he says.

How to CULTIVATE THE SCIENTIST in Your Child
Nurturing the scientist in your child involves fostering curiosity and encouraging exploration. Begin by creating a stimulating environment filled with books, science kits, and hands-on activities. Ask open-ended questions that inspire critical thinking, like “What do you think will happen if...?” These types of questions promote experimentation and problem-solving skills. Encourage outdoor exploration; nature can be the best laboratory for understanding ecosystems and physics in action.
Regular visits to science museums or interactive exhibits can further ignite their passion.
Additionally, engage in simple, safe experiments at home, such as creating a homemade volcano or growing crystals, to make learning fun. Celebrate their discoveries and innovations, reinforcing that science is about inquiry and learning from failures. By supporting their scientific interests, you’re enriching their knowledge and fostering a lifelong love of learning.
Empowering Children for a Successful College Journey
HHelping children prepare for college is essential for their future success. Strong academic habits are crucial; encouraging good study practices and time management can help students excel and become competitive applicants. Creating a structured environment for homework and study can support this growth.
Extracurricular involvement is also essential. Participation in clubs, sports, or volunteer work develops skills and showcases commitment, which enhances college applications. These activities can also help students discover their interests.
Financial literacy is another key area. Teaching children about budgeting and college costs can make the financial aspects less daunting. Discussing scholarships, grants, and the importance of early financial aid applications is beneficial.
Visiting colleges offers insights into different campus cultures, helping students envision their futures. Open discussions about their interests and concerns regarding college life are also essential.
Extracurricular Activities Are Essential for Your Child’s Growth
WWhen it comes to a child’s growth and development, learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings. Extracurricular activities—anything from sports and music lessons to robotics clubs, theater programs, and volunteer work—play a crucial role in shaping well-rounded, confident, and resilient kids.
Confidence, Character, and New Skills
Extracurriculars give children the opportunity to step outside the routine of academics and explore new passions. Scoring a basket, performing in a recital, or finishing a science project builds a sense of pride and self-confidence that carries into the classroom and beyond. These activities also nurture essential life
skills—time management, leadership, problem-solving, and perseverance—that help prepare kids for future challenges.
Making Friends and Building Community
Clubs and teams provide an environment where children connect with peers who share similar interests. Whether it’s bonding with teammates on the soccer field, collaborating with fellow debaters, or creating art side by side, kids learn valuable lessons about teamwork, communication, and respecting different perspectives. These friendships often extend outside of the activity itself, helping children feel rooted in their community.
Health, Balance, and Emotional Well-Being
Sports, dance, and martial arts offer an active outlet that promotes fitness and lifelong healthy habits. Creative programs—such as painting, drama, and music—provide emotional expression and stress relief. Having an activity outside of schoolwork gives children balance, helping them recharge and find joy in pursuing passions that are uniquely theirs.
Preparing for the Future
Colleges and employers look for more than strong grades—they value leadership, initiative, and a willingness to commit. Participation in extracurriculars demonstrates dedication
and discipline, but more importantly, these experiences lay the foundation for children to grow into curious, compassionate, and community-minded adults.
Local Opportunities for Growth
Town recreation departments offer sports leagues from baseball to lacrosse, while community theaters and dance studios nurture creative expression. Local YMCAs and art centers provide structured, supportive environments for children to learn, play, and grow. Volunteering through local charities or school service clubs also allows kids to make a positive impact close to home.
Extracurricular activities are not just “extras.” They are essential experiences that expand a child’s world, strengthen their character, and create memories that last a lifetime. By encouraging participation, parents can give their children opportunities that build skills, confidence, and connections—helping them flourish both now and in the future.
New Jersey parents are fortunate to have a wealth of options for their children’s education, tutoring and enrichment classes. Open houses provide insider information and help to answer questions for parents. Please contact each school or center directly for any questions.

Breaking the Silence: The Importance of Talking About Mental Health
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to remind ourselves that silence can be dangerous. Too often, stigma and fear keep people from speaking openly about mental health struggles—yet starting the conversation can save lives.
Depression, anxiety, and overwhelming stress can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. But when people feel they must hide their struggles, they may begin to believe they are truly alone. The truth is, millions share these challenges, and support is available.
Talking about mental health doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking a loved one, “How are you really doing?” or
sharing your own experiences so others know it’s okay to speak up. These small acts help break down the barriers of shame and isolation.
If you are struggling, remember—you do not have to suffer in silence. Resources are available 24/7:
• 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Call or text 988 for immediate, confidential help.
• NJ HopeLine (1-855-654-6735) –New Jersey’s 24/7 peer support and suicide prevention hotline.
• Mental Health Association of Essex & Morris – Local counseling, crisis response, and support services. www.mhainspire.org/locations
A Smile Opens a Door
This September let’s commit to replacing stigma with compassion and silence with support. By listening, checking in, and speaking openly, you can create a culture of hope and healing—one conversation at a time.
What Sets Us Apart
Boost Well-Being with Fall Garden Therapy
As the days grow cooler and the leaves turn golden, autumn provides the perfect backdrop for garden therapy. More than just a seasonal pastime, spending time in the garden during fall can nurture both body and mind, offering restorative benefits at a time when many of us begin to feel the effects of shorter days and a busier pace.
Working outdoors in crisp air is invigorating and helps reduce stress. Tasks like raking leaves, planting fall bulbs, or harvesting late-season vegetables allow you to slow down and stay present, creating a natural form of meditation. The sights, sounds, and earthy scents of autumn bring a grounding effect, easing tension and boosting mood.
Fall gardening also supports physical wellness. Activities like mulching, pruning, and prepping beds for winter provide gentle exercise that keeps the body moving without strain. Tending to cool-weather crops such as kale, spinach, and carrots not only keeps your garden productive but also adds nutrient-rich foods to your table during the season when comfort eating often takes over.
Even small touches—like arranging a pot of mums on the porch, planting pansies for late color, or simply enjoying a warm drink while admiring your backyard—can create moments of calm and clarity.
This fall, let your garden be more than a seasonal task. Use it as a sanctuary, a place where you can recharge, reflect, and welcome the changes of the season with well-being at the center.

The goal at HealthSource Chiropractic is to help each patient move better, feel better, and live better—with care designed to fit real life.
SSince it touches so many parts of daily life, from morning coffee to evening showers, water quality plays a bigger role than most homeowners realize.
Good water means good health. If your tap water contains impurities like chlorine, sediment, or trace metals, it may not just change the taste—it can also affect your family’s wellbeing. Clean, filtered water supports better hydration, healthier cooking, and peace of mind every time you fill a glass.
Poor water quality doesn’t just impact people; it can also take a toll on your home. Hard water, for example, can leave behind mineral buildup that clogs pipes, reduces water pressure, and shortens the life of appliances like dishwashers and water heaters. Softer, treated water helps keep your systems running smoothly and your fixtures looking new.
Have you noticed spots on your dishes, stiff laundry, or dry skin after a shower? These small frustrations are often linked to water quality. Improving your water can make fabrics feel softer, dishes sparkle, and showers leave you feeling refreshed instead of dried out.
Clean water truly is the foundation of a comfortable, healthy home. Taking steps to improve your water quality—whether that’s regular testing, adding a filter, or investing in a softener—offers peace of mind.

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE
Conquering Peripheral Neuropathy with Rose Gold Wellness
“It’s as though l’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.”
“It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”
“Like I’m walking on wet paint with rolled up socks.”
And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.
“It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Rose W.
Rose was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.
“My doctor sat me down and said, ‘Rose, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but you have peripheral neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable. My first thought was, ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.”
While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown. This was the case with Rose. “Basically every question I had was met with an ‘I don’t know. It was depressing to say the least.”
Eventually, Rose was forced to quit her job because the numbness had started to set in and prevented her from driving. Fortunately, she went to a talk Rose Gold Wellness gave on what they were doing to treat peripheral neuropathy.
“I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor on TV saying she had a 90% success rate in treating neuropathy! I just had to call and I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”
Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, founder of Rose Gold Wellness, says that cases like Rose’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in offering hope.”
To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails.”
“Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions like neuropathy for thousands of years,” shares Dr. Rosie.
“I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my two decades of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on a number of factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”
Four months after treatment, Rose is back bat work and thriving. “Being back at work isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Rose. “Not only was l able to attend my son’s wedding, but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Rosie to thank for it. To think, I might’ve missed that.” Rose held back tears.
If you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its cause, it’s time to call Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold Wellness. Call (862) 622-6289 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit rosegoldwellness.com to take advantage of their new new patient offer, a $40 consult (normally $240).

The Art of Fresh: T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine Sources Locally
BY MELISSA RADIN, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
MMontclair’s T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine isn’t your typical takeout. This awardwinning, one-of-a-kind Chinese kitchen turns delivery into a fresh, personalized culinary experience. With locally sourced ingredients and custom-made dishes tailored to your needs—glutenfree, low sodium, or an off-menu creation—T.S. Ma proves takeout can be healthy and crave-worthy.
Unlike many Chinese restaurants that rely on canned veggies and heavy sauces, T.S. Ma makes everything fresh daily. All vegetables are delivered fresh multiple times a week. You’ll taste the difference in dishes such as the General Tso’s Chicken, which is lightly coated instead of heavybattered, or the Chicken with Mixed Chinese Greens Sauteed with Fresh Garlic and Ginger, where crisp, vibrant vegetables shine.
T.S. Ma uses antibiotic-free white meat chicken tenderloin and premium black angus beef sourced from local purveyors. In seafood dishes they use fresh white shrimp and Norwegian salmon. Even sauces are crafted in-house without MSG or starch thickeners, ensuring they arrive silky smooth, never gelatinous. Every detail, down to the delivery containers, is tested to maintain quality.
What sets T.S. Ma apart is its in-house delivery team—of more than 15 packers and drivers—ensuring your order is prepared, packed, and delivered fresh without relying on slow, expensive thirdparty services.
For over 19 years, T.S. Ma has been Montclair’s go-to for healthier, fresher Chinese food. Whether you’re ordering delivery, takeout, or dining in at their Wyckoff location just 20 minutes away, T.S. Ma is redefining what Chinese takeout can be: light, fresh, and made just for you.
Before you settle for another pizza night, discover why T.S. Ma was voted Best Chinese Restaurant.

THE 5 SECRETS
BY BARRY FARBER
TThis month, I’m proud to share some exciting news—the release of the special edition hardcover of The Adventures of Little Billy… In Search of the Magic Tree
This children’s book is more than just a story—it’s the result of decades of research on the core traits every parent hopes to instill in their children. Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing world-class thinkers, business leaders, and inspirational achievers. From thousands of conversations—on radio, television, podcasts, and in person—five universal qualities consistently emerged as the foundation for living a meaningful and successful life.
If you distilled lessons from 14 business and inspirational books, combined with all of those interviews, you’d be left with five essential traits: Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. These are the “5 Secrets” that I believe can help guide children— and adults—toward their best lives. Here are some timeless quotes that capture the heart of each trait and offer us clear reminders of how to live them:
SERVICE
“Catch a passion for helping others, and a richer life will come back to you.”
-William Danforth
ATTITUDE
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, or a home. The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past, nor can we alter the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”
–Charles R. Swindoll
COURAGE
“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”
–Marie Curie
EMPATHY
“Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.”
- Ruppert the Toad
DETERMINATION
“A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.”
– Colin Powell
The wisdom of those who came before us continues to light the path ahead. When we keep these five attributes close—service, attitude, courage, empathy, and determination—we not only elevate ourselves, but we also uplift everyone around us.
And that’s where the real magic begins.
