West Caldwell Residents Turn Compassion Into Companionship
What began as a simple Facebook request for someone to spend time with an older adult has grown into a meaningful initiative centered on connection and care. Rebecca Bivona and Emma Stone-Webb of West Caldwell launched Senior Companions last September after discovering how powerful companionship can be for seniors experiencing isolation.
Through personalized visits, they spend time walking in local parks, sharing coffee outings, helping with grocery trips, and engaging in conversation tailored to each individual’s interests. Their goal is to support mental health and reduce loneliness for seniors navigating mobility challenges, dementia, or limited social interaction. “It feels incredibly fulfilling,” they say, noting that many relationships naturally evolve into genuine friendships, turning simple visits into lasting bonds. For information, email: seniorcompanionswc@gmail.com.
Communication in Fairfield
After conquering their own fear of public speaking, Distinguished Toastmasters Margarita Estrada and Donna Hook are helping others build confidence. As leaders of the Dining to Speak Toastmasters club, they guide members through speeches, impromptu exercises, and constructive evaluations in a supportive environment. The group meets both in-person and online in Fairfield on the first Wednesday of each month from 7–9 pm.
Claire Gao of Livingston Takes Flight Through Civil Air Patrol Building Confidence Through
CEstrada, a public speaking coach who once faced panic attacks, and Hook, a life coach who joined Toastmasters after receiving “needs communications
improvement” feedback at work, say the organization transformed their lives. Today, they focus on creating a supportive environment where beginners and experienced speakers alike can grow and lead. For information, visit their Facebook page, @diningtospeak.
laire Gao of Livingston is charting an ambitious course toward aviation and leadership after earning the prestigious Amelia Earhart Award, a major milestone in the Civil Air Patrol cadet program recognizing advanced leadership, aerospace knowledge, physical fitness, and character development. Advancing through key achievement awards, Gao reached the rank of Cadet Captain, taking on mentoring and command staff responsibilities. She was also recently named Cadet of the Year, marking her third time receiving the honor.
Initially drawn to aviation, she discovered a passion for mentoring younger cadets and developing leadership skills within the structured cadet program. Gao is currently applying to national flight academies and hopes to pursue aerospace engineering and attend the U.S. Naval Academy, combining aviation with military service. Finding Purpose in West Caldwell Through Craft
For Stephen Sirvan of West Caldwell, woodworking began as a creative escape during the pandemic and quickly became a meaningful passion rooted in creativity and community. Starting in his parents’ garage with a single slab of wood, he taught himself through experimentation, online learning, and a lifelong love of working with his hands.
Today, Sirvan creates custom furniture and handcrafted charcuterie boards. What brings him the most satisfaction, however, is giving back. Inspired by his work with local food drives, he donates a portion of select projects to food pantries and community organizations. For Sirvan, woodworking is not just about building objects. It is about purpose, generosity, and sharing something lasting with others. Follow him on Instagram: @stephensirvan.
Leadership Has No Age Limit for Livingston High School Student
Daniel Zhang is proving that leadership has no age limit. A junior at Livingston High School, Zhang serves as executive director of Omega Speech and Debate, a rapidly growing coaching organization that prepares students from fourth grade through high school for competitive public forum debate. Taking over operations from his brother Matthew, Zhang now oversees programming, coaches alongside college mentors, and manages a community of nearly 200 students. Under his leadership, Omega teams recently won the prestigious Georgetown national tournament for the third consecutive year.
Through weekly training sessions, seasonal programs, and national competitions, Omega Speech and Debate helps young speakers find their voice, while Zhang demonstrates what is possible when passion, discipline, and entrepreneurship come together. For information, visit: omegaspeechdebate.org
Montclair Resident Helps Women Say What Matters Most
“Not later. Not someday. Now,” is the philosophy guiding Alissa Peck’s Yellow Brick Legacy program, a five-week guided experience designed to help women pause, reflect, and put into words what matters most. Inspired by the realization that much of life goes unsaid, not for lack of love, but for lack of time and intention, Peck, of Montclair, created a structured small-group process centered on clarity, connection, and purpose.
Cohorts of six use journals, guided prompts, and thoughtful frameworks to explore the values, memories, and defining moments that have shaped their lives, culminating in a personal legacy letter expressing love, insight, or gratitude to share with a loved one, or with oneself. Sessions are held locally at her home overlooking Yantacaw Creek Park, as well as virtually. For information, visit: yellowbricklegacy.com.

Honoring a Legacy by Lifting Others
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
SWhen Trae Bodge lost her mother, Sarah Bodge, in 2023, she set out to honor her entrepreneurial legacy through meaningful impact. The result is the Threadneedle Alley Foundation, a nonprofit she cofounded with family members Cindy Bodge and Amy Weinberg to support midlife entrepreneurs pursuing their business dreams.
Sarah, an entrepreneur who ran a beauty shop on Threadneedle Alley in Newburyport, Massachusetts, whose resilience inspired the foundation’s mission. Named after the street where Sarah built her business, the Threadneedle Alley Foundation was created to help entrepreneurs access both funding and mentorship at pivotal moments in their journeys.
Launching the foundation has been deeply personal for Bodge, who resides in Montclair. “My mom’s drive and determination inspired us,” she says. “We wanted to create something meaningful that helps others move forward with confidence. If we can help even a few people feel that same sense of possibility, then we’re honoring her in the best way we know how.”
Each year, Threadneedle Alley awards three $5,000 grants to entrepreneurs building businesses later in life. In addition to financial support, recipients receive ongoing mentorship from a network of experienced professionals offering guidance in areas such as marketing, finance, and legal strategy.
This year’s grant recipients include Mandy Giles of Parents of Trans Youth, a Houston, TX organization offering peer support, resources, and community for families of transgender and gender-diverse youth; Pam Jackson of Dip N’ Double Ice Cream in Flossmoor, IL, whose mission is to bring happiness with every scoop; and Ronda Billings of Rday Cake Creations, a special-occasion cake shop in Woodstock, GA. Selected from more than 450 applicants, the winners
represent the vision, resilience, and creativity the foundation aims to support with finalists sharing personal stories through application videos that reveal both their challenges and aspirations. After selection, Bodge remains closely involved, guiding winners through mentorship connections and monthly check-ins designed to support long-term growth.
Through Threadneedle Alley, Bodge has transformed personal loss into lasting impact, creating opportunities while continuing the entrepreneurial legacy that began on Threadneedle Alley. For more information, visit threadneedlealley.org.

The Power of Collective Giving
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
MMeaningful change often begins when people come together with a shared purpose and a commitment to lifting their community. For Impact 100 Essex, that collective spirit has translated into tangible support for local nonprofits through its Equity Grants, which recently provided funding to three Essex County organizations working on the front lines of community need.
This year’s recipients include Bessie Green Community, Inc., providing food, clothing, and social services in Newark; Brothers Building a Better Nation, supporting young men and families through mental health resources and holistic programming; and Butterfly Dreamz, which empowers girls and young women through creative leadership opportunities. Designed to expand opportunities for smaller, communityrooted organizations that may not always receive traditional funding support, the Equity Grants provide flexible funding that allows nonprofit leaders to respond quickly to evolving community needs.
The 2025 cycle drew a record 28 applications, with 33 member volunteers participating in a rigorous review process. Three organizations were ultimately selected to receive a total of $65,000 in
(l-r): 2025 Equity Grant recipients Joy Lindsay, founder and CEO of Butterfly Dreamz Inc.; Quadeer Porter, founder and executive director of Brothers Building a Better Nation; and Rosa Vasquez Zaremba, executive director of Bessie Green Community, Inc.
unrestricted funding, the largest Equity Grant distribution since the initiative launched in 2021. Since then, Impact 100 Essex has awarded $235,000 in Equity Grants to 14 organizations and $1,226,500 through its annual $100,000 Impact Grant program since 2017.
Behind these awards is Impact 100 Essex, a women-led philanthropic organization built on a collaborative model in which members contribute $1,000 annually, pooling resources to create meaningful community investments and showing how collective giving multiplies individual impact. Entirely volunteer-driven, members review applications, participate in evaluation teams, and vote on final recipients.
One grantee described the organization’s approach this way: “The women of Impact100 do not feel like another foundation. They feel like a force. They care about the work, they care about our young men, and they care about the condition of our community.”
As participation grows, so does the organization’s ability to support nonprofits addressing Essex County’s evolving needs, proving that when individuals come together with shared purpose, collective giving becomes a powerful force for lasting change. Women interested in learning more about membership or upcoming initiatives can visit impact100essex.org.

Faces On Exhibit
WWest Orange resident Amy Wax can’t remember not drawing, even as a child. She always wanted to be an artist. And she loved making portraits. “Portraiture is one of the oldest art forms,” she says, and “portraits become part of a family’s history.”
Even as a high school student, she was receiving commissions for her portraiture, and at the age of 15 had an exhibit in the New Providence post office where she grew up. Attending Syracuse University as an Illustration Major, she refined her skills and afterward, became a freelance illustrator, working on album covers, and magazine illustrations. In 1983 she got a job as an Art Director at NBC and pursued that for 30 years. Subsequently, Ms. Wax has been making portraits in pastels that are nothing short of breathtaking.
Fourteen of her evocative pastel portraits will be on display in an exhibition entitled Faces. Also on display will be works from Janet Boltax and John Zollo.

A Lifelong Journey of Jewish Learning, Joy, and Community
LLearning at Temple Sholom of West Essex is a lifelong journey— joyful, meaningful, and deeply engaging. From a child’s first Tot Shabbat through Bat or Bar Mitzvah and into adult Torah study, we offer rich opportunities for learners of every age to grow, connect, and belong.
Families love our interactive Tot Shabbat, where toddlers joyfully encounter Jewish rituals, music, and community for the very first time. Our Religious School program begins in kindergarten and continues through high school, culminating in Confirmation for our seniors. In grades K–5, students explore Jewish values and obligations (Mitzvot and Middot), Shabbat and holidays, Torah and sacred texts, prayer (Tefillah), Israel—past and present—and Hebrew, building connections to prayer, tradition, and heritage. Our classrooms are warm and welcoming, designed to spark curiosity, build pride in Jewish identity, foster moral responsibility, and create excitement around Jewish life.
Beginning in third grade, students deepen their Hebrew learning and explore timeless Jewish texts, discovering how ancient wisdom speaks to modern choices and character development. Our goal is not only to prepare students for Bat or Bar Mitzvah, but to help them feel genuine joy and pride in living a Jewish life.
Adult learners can choose from Torah study, Rabbi-led lectures, Hebrew with the Cantor, book and film discussions, Rosh Chodesh gatherings, and trips to sites of Jewish interest. For families, we offer Shabbat dinners, pasta nights, activity programs, and day trips that bring Jewish history and community to life—together.

Early Spring Landscaping Mistakes You Should Avoid
AAs winter fades across New Jersey, many homeowners are eager to get outside and start landscaping. But early spring enthusiasm can sometimes do more harm than good. Before you dig in, here are common early-season mistakes to avoid—so your yard stays healthy all year long.
One of the biggest missteps is planting too early. While a few warm days may feel like spring has arrived, New Jersey’s soil often remains cold and wet well into March and early April. Planting before the ground has warmed can stunt root growth or kill young plants if a late frost hits.
Another common mistake is over-pruning shrubs and trees. While it’s smart to remove damaged or dead branches, heavy pruning too early can stress plants and reduce flowering later in the season. Many flowering shrubs should only be pruned after they bloom.
Homeowners also tend to over-clean garden beds. Leaving some fallen leaves and plant debris helps protect emerging perennials from temperature swings and supports beneficial insects. A light cleanup is better than a full strip-down.
Overwatering is another issue, especially after snowmelt and spring rains. Saturated soil can suffocate roots and invite disease. Always check soil moisture before turning on irrigation systems.
Finally, avoid starting lawn care too aggressively. Raking too hard, fertilizing too early, or applying weed control before grass is actively growing can damage turf and waste money.
The Soul of the Sanctuary
Why 2026 is the Year of the “Personalized Bath”
BY KAREN NAITHE, LEAD DESIGNER AT BATH TUNE-UP
IIn 2026, bathroom design is no longer about chasing the latest look—it’s about creating spaces that feel intentional, personal, and enduring. The era of stark, all-white bathrooms is giving way to warmer, more expressive environments that prioritize comfort as much as aesthetics.
We’re seeing a clear shift toward earthy color palettes, natural materials, and layered textures. Stone, wood-toned finishes, handcrafted tiles, and subtle tonal variation bring depth and softness to what was once a purely functional space. These elements don’t shout—they ground the room and give it longevity.
The New Earthy Palette: Modern Organic
The 2026 palette is defined by ‘Modern Organic’ tones—sandy beiges, soft clays, and warm greiges. When paired with natural wood grains and rich travertine, the result is a room that feels connected to the world outside.
Texture as the New Ornamentation
Flat, clinical surfaces are taking a backseat to dimension. We are seeing a massive rise in layered textures—ribbed wood vanities and handcrafted Zellige-style tiles that create a play of light and shadow, adding ‘quiet luxury’ without the clutter.
The Elevated Experience: Spa-Inspired Wellness
Wellness continues to shape the conversation in a more refined way. Spa-inspired bathrooms now focus on experience: oversized curbless walk-in showers, thoughtful layered lighting, and seamless layouts that elevate daily routines.
2026 Design Q&A
Q: How would you define bathroom design in 2026?
A: 2026 bathrooms are warmer, more layered, and far more personal. We’re seeing a clear shift away from sterile, monochrome spaces toward environments that feel lived-in and intentional.
Q: How does personalization balance with resale value?
A: The key is restraint. Personal expression layered onto classic layouts and durable materials creates a bathroom that feels distinctive yet broadly appealing.
The Bath Tune-Up Difference
While these high-end trends are inspiring, the process of a remodel can often feel overwhelming. Bath TuneUp redefines the industry by offering curated, designer-inspired collections to ensure your personalization remains cohesive and high-end. Whether it is a quick refresh or a complete transformation, the process is built on efficiency and clear communication.

Transform Your Backyard! Landscaping and so much more
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
WWhen Dan Smith founded Smitty’s Landscaping in 1981 at just 19 years old, the business consisted of little more than an old, beat-up pickup truck, a lawn mower, and 13 loyal customers. Through hard work, determination, and an engaging personality, Dan quickly grew his client base and reputation.
Today, Smitty’s Landscaping & Irrigation is a highly successful, family-owned company with deep roots in New Jersey. Dan’s son, Dan Smith Jr., joined the business 10 years ago and now serves as vice president. A licensed irrigation specialist, he plays a key role in the company’s continued growth and modernization.
While Smitty’s no longer focuses on routine lawn maintenance, the company has evolved into a full-service operation specializing in irrigation systems, custom landscaping, and seasonal décor. One of its most distinctive offerings is professional holiday decorating. “We bought into the Christmas Decor® network in 1998 and were the first
franchise in New Jersey,” explains Dan Sr. “Everyone hates putting up and taking down Christmas lights—and back then, no one was offering that service. Today, we decorate more than a thousand homes each holiday season.”
Smitty’s Landscaping & Irrigation is also well known for its large-scale design and construction projects. One standout backyard transformation in Little Falls exemplifies the company’s expertise. The homeowners wanted to maximize their outdoor space so it could be enjoyed yearround—not just during spring and summer.
“It wasn’t only about adding amenities,” says Alex Duro, outside lead landscape designer and senior sales representative. “It was about extending the summer season. That’s why they included a pool house with a fireplace. They even bring out outdoor heaters so they can watch football games comfortably.” The space also features a stunning bar, making it ideal for entertaining family and friends.
To achieve the clean, modern, four-season retreat the homeowners envisioned, the design process began with a plan tailored to the client’s budget, which was refined until every detail met their expectations. “We use software that creates a fully colored 2D landscape plan that’s 100 percent realistic and buildable,” says Duro.
Smitty’s handled every aspect of the project, including the fireplace, bar, patio, cabana, outdoor kitchen, boulder retaining walls, and walkways. The only existing elements were the pool and its coping.
“We broke ground in June 2024 and completed the project by October,” Duro says. “The clients are absolutely in love with the space—it’s everything they’ve ever wanted.”

TIPS FOR REMOVING GREASE from Kitchen Cabinets
Proper cleaning and maintenance will help keep your kitchen cabinets looking clean and pristine. To prevent grease buildup, clean your cabinets regularly, especially those near the stove. Wipe down surfaces after cooking to catch grease before it hardens.
GENTLE CLEANING SOLUTION: Mix a mild dish soap or a few drops of liquid detergent with warm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
WARM WATER RINSE: Dampen a clean cloth or sponge in the soapy water mixture, wring it out well, and wipe down the greasy areas on your cabinets. Always use a gentle touch to avoid scratching the surface.
VINEGAR SOLUTION: White vinegar is a natural degreaser. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and use this solution for more stubborn grease stains. Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t harm the cabinet finish.
BAKING SODA PASTE: For tough, sticky grease spots, make a paste using baking soda and water. Gently rub it onto the affected area with a soft cloth, and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
COMMERCIAL CLEANERS: Some kitchen cabinet-specific cleaners are available on the market. Read and follow the product instructions carefully.
MICROFIBER CLOTH: Use a microfiber cloth for the final wipe-down to ensure a streak-free finish.
CABINET HARDWARE: Don’t forget to clean cabinet knobs and handles. Remove them if possible and soak them in warm, soapy water for a thorough cleaning.
PROTECTIVE COATING: Apply a furniture wax or cabinet polish to create a protective barrier that makes it easier to clean in the future.
Remember to always read the manufacturer’s care instructions for your specific cabinet material, as different surfaces may require special care.

Three Generations of Craftsmanship and Innovation
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
FFor nearly six decades, Gargiulo Builders has helped families throughout the suburban Essex area transform not just their homes, but the way they live in them. Founded in 1965 by Anthony Gargiulo and now led by second-generation owner Steven Gargiulo, the company continues to evolve as a three-generation family business. Steve’s son, Anthony, recently joined the team, bringing fresh energy alongside decades of experience.
A full-service remodeling and building company, Gargiulo Builders specializes in additions, add-a-levels, kitchen and bathroom renovations, basement finishing, sunrooms, decks, windows, doors, and new home construction projects. From conception through
design and construction, the team guides homeowners through every stage of the process, often collaborating closely with architects to turn ideas into thoughtfully executed spaces.
Many of the company’s projects focus on reimagining existing homes by reshaping floor plans and creating entirely new environments while preserving the character that homeowners love.
Outdoor renovations, particularly decks and exterior living spaces, remain especially popular as families plan for spring and summer use.
In addition to its core renovation work, Gargiulo Builders is expanding into Aging-In-Place services, helping homeowners safely remain in their homes through accessibility-focused upgrades such as widened doorways, handrails, grab bars, ADA-compliant hardware, and layout modifications designed for longterm comfort and independence.
With three generations now involved, Gargiulo Builders continues a legacy rooted in craftsmanship, trust, and homes built to be enjoyed for years to come.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child at camp is the chance to truly unplug. At Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, we’re proudly screen free. That means no phones buzzing in pockets, no scrolling before bed, no instant reactions typed and sent in seconds. Instead, campers talk. They laugh face-to-face. They sit on a dock and think. They write letters home.
Before camp begins, encourage your child to bring a journal and a few stamped envelopes. Writing slows them down in the best possible way. When kids put pen to paper, they have to pause, reflect, and choose their words with care. They move past the quick, knee-jerk response that so often happens online and into something deeper such as naming their feelings, celebrating small wins, and working through challenges.
Journaling helps campers process homesickness, friendship dynamics, and those big “I did it!” moments. Letter writing builds empathy and gratitude. Both foster resilience and emotional awareness—skills that last far beyond the summer.
Screen-free doesn’t mean disconnected. It means connected in a more meaningful way. And sometimes, the most powerful growth happens when the Wi-Fi is off and the world feels wonderfully present.
Maya Gujral, Summer Camp Director, Fairview Lake YMCA Camps
Summer is a great time to lean into your child’s passions and interests. If they can have some fun while learning some real world skills, you’re winning. Whether they’re a beginner eager to learn or a seasoned filmmaker looking to refine their skills, our camps inspire young creators and create unforgettable memories.
Montclair Film Summer Academy MontclairFilm.org/Education
When choosing a summer program, look for one that develops the whole child in mind, body, and spirit. The best opportunities are ones that help children build confidence, connect with others, and discover new ways to express themselves. Most importantly, it should be a place where they feel safe, supported, and excited to learn something new every day.
SMAPA’s Summer Arts programs foster self-expression and bolster self-esteem through participation in dance, music, art, and drama. Our students come away with new friends, memories, and appreciation for the arts!

SMAPA Prime Time Summer Arts Camp
Here are some tips for choosing a summer theater camp/ program:
• Small classes and high teacher to student ratio.
• Look for an approach that groups students by both age as well as ability.
• The program should be individualized to the needs of each child and the teachers should be aware of each child’s needs and goals for the summer.
• Beware of programs that promise too much or profess to put on a different full musical every 1 or 2 weeks. Even Broadway performers need more time than that to put together a musical!
• To develop a strong foundation, it’s very important to have all students – especially beginners - taught by experienced teachers.
• Every student should be given an opportunity to “shine” in the performance so that they each have a chance to try out the skills they have learned and enjoy the thrill of being on stage!
• Overall, look for the program to foster learning, performance and group activities that help to ensure the entire experience is one that not only builds the student’s abilities and confidence, but one that also injects fun, and team spirit into the program. It is a summer camp after all!
Randy Elman, Artistic Director, Musical Theatre Conservatory
Summer Art Camp is a wonderful way for your child to experience the many wellness benefits of making art. When kids create, they’re doing so much more than painting or drawing—they’re learning how to express their emotions, solve problems creatively, and make thoughtful decisions. The process of turning an idea into something tangible builds confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of accomplishment.
Brian Reilly, VACNJ Summer Art Camp
Music studies develop the entire human being in every way—intellectual, physical, and cultural. Research has shown that serious music studies contribute to improved school grades, as well as advancement in cognitive development
Katherine Calderone Calderone School of Music
The theater classes we teach emphasize fun, supporting self-esteem and building confidence. We also highlight collaboration in our classes. Theater is one of the most collaborative of the performing arts, and learning that skill helps in every facet of life. When we collaborate in class, students learn how to give positive feedback, hear and appreciate ideas that may not have been their first choice, and give each person in the group a chance to contribute. Together, these things not only help bring the quiet student out of his or her shell, but also help the assertive student develop empathy and consideration for others. All while having a super-fun time!
If your child loves getting creative—and has a sweet tooth to match—Splurge Bakery’s baking camp is the perfect place to sprinkle in some summer fun. Each day, campers roll up their sleeves and dive right into decorating cupcakes, cookies, and special treats, while learning beginner piping and frosting techniques along the way. We mix things up with fun, themed decorating days that keep creativity flowing and smiles coming.
Every camper builds confidence as they create edible masterpieces they’re proud to take home and show off. No baking experience needed here—just curiosity, imagination, and a willingness to have fun. Our camp is all about encouragement, creativity, and making every day feel a little extra sweet.

Sending your child to summer overnight camp gives them something screens can’t” confidence, independence, and lifelong friendships, all built through outoor adventure, caring mentors, and a safe, supportive community that helps kids grow into their best selves in a place that feels like home, even when it’s away from home.
Keith VanDerzee, Executive Director YMCA Camp Mason
Being a counselor at Camp Fitch YMCA was truly magical. As an international staff member, my summer was a mix of emotions, everything was new, different, and exciting. From the very beginning, the camp community welcomed me and made me feel at home.
What makes Camp Fitch special is something we call FAB (Friendship, Achievement, and Belonging). I saw friendships form in just days, watched campers achieve things they never thought they could do, and witnessed shy kids find their place and their voice.
One tip for parents: give your child the opportunity to experience that sense of belonging. When kids feel supported and encouraged to try new things, they grow in confidence, independence, and resilience.
My campers made the best summer of my life, and Camp Fitch will always be my second home.

NEW YORK FOOTWEAR & ACCESSORIES DESIGN CAMP
(A division of If P Then Q Camps)
This boutique summer residency offers young designers a rare chance to train inside a true professional atelier. Held July 13 – 31 in Montclair, the program delivers a dual immersion in handcrafted footwear and bag design, taught by veteran mentors from FIT and Parsons. With only a few benches available and a 5:1 apprentice-to-mentor ratio, students learn industrial patternmaking, construction, and full product fabrication - from concept to finished product.
We respect students for their capability. Age is irrelevant. Past apprentices have ranged from 10 to college-level. By introducing college-level curricula early, we give developing makers a competitive edge: stronger portfolios, elevated craftsmanship and greater confidence stepping into elite fashion colleges.
A third optional week supports portfolio development or advanced work. Private and semi-private summer sessions are also available in our Springfield studio. Summers only.
The program is by invitation-only. Call to schedule a brief interview. After acceptance, an email will be sent with a link to register.
Rags-to-Bags Camp is a circular-design sewing atelier for young makers ages 8-12. Students transform recycled textiles into functional bags while learning real technical skills in a focused 5:1 studio environment. Guided by the “If P then Q Camps” philosophy of logic-driven design education, campers learn to read a ruler accurately, apply fractions, operate industrial sewing machines safely, and draft a set of industrial patterns.
Program: August 3-7, 9am-3:30pm
Each student completes one or more classic constructions such as a T-bottom tote, small, gusseted crossbody bag or self-lined zippered clutch with an embellishment. Designed as the entry point into the more advanced “If P then Q Camps” programs, Rags-to-Bags builds confidence, dexterity, and a foundation for future design study. Prospective students will take part in a short, friendly meeting to share a little about themselves. Call Jenn at 973-568-9407 or email jenn@ifpthengcamps.com to schedule.
Building a Legacy Through Trust, Dedication, and Women-Led Leadership

TRACEY GOLDSTEIN AND ADRIENNE LEPORE DID NOT SET OUT TO REDEFINE A LAW FIRM. OVER DECADES OF WORKING SIDE BY SIDE, BUILDING TRUSTED CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS, AND GUIDING COMPLEX LEGAL CHALLENGES, THEY CREATED GOLDSTEIN LEPORE, LLC, A WOMEN-OWNED AND MANAGED FIRM SHAPED BY EXPERIENCE AND VISION.
The firm’s roots date back to 1991, but its current identity reflects the journeys of two attorneys who grew into leadership through years of dedication and collaboration. Both began as young associates, Goldstein in 1995 and LePore in 2001, growing with the practice and ultimately stepping into leadership as a new generation shaped its future. In July 2025, the firm formally transitioned into Goldstein LePore, marking both continuity and evolution.
Today, Goldstein LePore represents owners, managers, and developers of multifamily residential and commercial properties throughout New Jersey. The firm focuses on complex landlord-tenant matters,
housing discrimination cases, and commercial litigation, areas requiring both legal precision and practical business insight. By maintaining a focused niche rather than a broad general practice, the attorneys anticipate challenges others may overlook and guide clients through evolving legal landscapes with clarity and confidence. For many clients and referring attorneys, the firm has become a go-to resource for difficult landlord-tenant matters requiring deep experience and strategic judgment. In a field where nuance often determines outcome, their value lies not only in knowing the law but in understanding how it is applied in real-world situations.

Tracey Goldstein and Joelle McLeod
Goldstein’s interest in law began early, shaped by her mother’s emphasis on independence and reinforced through participation in a Youth Court program where she served as a defense attorney, an experience that solidified her commitment to advocacy. LePore was similarly influenced by growing up around the legal profession through her father and grandfather, as well as by her grandmother, a pioneering female business leader whose resilience helped shape her perspective on leadership.
What distinguishes the firm most is the depth of its relationships. Many clients have worked with the practice for decades, often across generations, reflecting trust built through consistent results and candid guidance. That continuity is supported by a strong, experienced team whose knowledge and attention to detail help manage complex matters efficiently while maintaining a personalized approach. For Goldstein and
LePore, advocacy extends beyond litigation; it means serving as longterm advisors who understand the personal and financial stakes behind every decision.
Operating within a traditionally male-dominated litigation environment has shaped their leadership perspective as well. Both attorneys emphasize that credibility comes from preparation, knowledge, and presence, a philosophy reflected in their active roles shaping the profession. Goldstein serves on key judicial and bar association committees influencing landlord-tenant procedure, and the firm has handled appellate matters that have helped shape legal precedent across New Jersey. Their influence also extends through involvement with organizations including the New Jersey State Bar Association and the New Jersey Apartment Association, where they help shape conversations around legal procedure and industry standards.

Looking ahead, Goldstein and LePore remain focused on continued growth, client education, and maintaining a firm defined by expertise, integrity, and lasting relationships. Ultimately, Goldstein LePore reflects the strength of partnership, earned trust, and leadership shaped by experience and purpose.

Rooted in the belief that everyone deserves to live free from fear, JBWS offers safety, support, and a path forward for those navigating some of life’s most difficult moments.
Providing Safety, Support and Solutions from Abuse

Its Morristown headquarters serves as both a refuge and a resource, providing confidential support in a space built on trust and dignity. The organization also works proactively, offering prevention education and community outreach programs that help break cycles of abuse before they begin.
Tricky Tray for Hope is hosted on our mobile giving platform GiveSmart with an in-person drawing! With around 150 baskets to choose from, participants could win beautiful jewelry, vacation packages, wine and dine experiences, shopping sprees, spa treatments, and more.
One week before the event, the Tricky Tray for Hope site will open for viewing only. At that time, we encourage you to browse our many prizes in advance. The funds raised at our special events help us provide lifesaving services to our clients. Without the generosity and support of our donors, we would not be able to offer critical services to those impacted by domestic violence such as: our 24-Hour Helpline, residential programs, counseling services, abuse intervention programs, and community education services. Help us celebrate JBWS 50th anniversary by attending an event!

WALLCOVERINGS AND INTERIORS
560 Central Avenue, New Providence 9089-665-7997
www.creativewallcoverings.com
As the owner and senior interior designer of Creative Wallcoverings and Interiors (CWI), Rachel Kapner has been helping clients fall in love with the spaces in their homes for over 20 years. This passion, she says, also enables her to live and enjoy individual designs vicariously through her clients. Her golden rule: To listen and learn about each client, apply that to how they live in their homes, and then use their color and style preferences to create a space that fits their lifestyle. “Each client is unique and my design selections reflect that,” she says.
Rachel’s mother, Dorothy, started CWI 50 years ago with two partners in the town of Summit. After Rachel, who majored in Fine Arts at Roger Williams University and initially wanted to be a fashion designer, and her business partner and husband Gary, took over, they expanded and hired other talented people in order to assist more clients.
Today, it’s a full-service residential interior design firm now located in New Providence, and she and her talented staff can handle the entire process—from concept and design detailing to material selection and implementation. When designing a room, Rachel uses her appreciation for color while incorporating multiple textures for a classic and elegant look with lots of modern lines and a little bit of whimsy.
CWI has won many awards for their designs, including Mansion in May’s top honor, the Tulip Award, twice in 2006 and 2014. The firm is also often complimented by leading media sources, such as The Huffington Post and Aspire Design and Home magazine.
Rachel’s advice to other women who dream of running their own businesses: “It sounds cliché, but be passionate, determined and willing to put in the hard work,” she says. “That way, the business will grow and blossom organically.”

Due the involved process of placing implants into the bone, she relies on referrals of self-selected surgeons that have been trained for extra years to confidently place the implant. This ensures the success of her restoration that she places on the implant whether it’s a crown, bridge or permanent denture.

IInspired by my father, a dedicated general dentist who never realized his dream of owning a practice before passing in 2003, I set out to open my own. This journey became a shared dream for us both.
My mission is to provide the highest standard of personal orthodontic care for children and adults. I believe that we are not just straightening teeth, but we are crafting smiles for a person’s most important moments. I think about each of my patients smiling at their graduations, interviews, and weddings. As the healthcare landscape becomes more corporatized, I am proud to operate and fully own my practice, offering a truly boutique orthodontic experience.

My ambitions continually motivate me to learn more about orthodontics, business, and my passions. To me, success means building a life you don’t wish to escape. True balance may not exist, but you can pursue it all—just not simultaneously.
The advice I would give to women who want to follow a similar path is “Don’t place limits on yourself.” I truly believe every big dream is just the culmination of small decisions and choices that compound over time. Start learning more about your goals and then take the first small step and the one after that. Don’t stop to wonder if you can or can’t do something—just start.

That decision became Keep Creating Art Wellness, a nonprofit art studio based at Lackawanna Station in Montclair. Its purpose is simple and powerful: an inclusive, intimidation-free space where people of all ages, skill levels, and abilities can come together and create.
“Keep Creating is where art and wellness unite,” Iovino says, grounded in the belief that creativity can support wellbeing, connection, and personal expression.
For Iovino, success is measured in small breakthroughs, especially when someone who believes they are not artistic leaves feeling proud and surprised by what they created.
Programming includes Open Studio, Toddler Time, Inclusive Classes, and Art Night Fridays, an alternative to paint and sip. Additional offerings such as
Meditative Drawing, Art for the New Artist, Collage Extravaganza, Keep Sketching, Beginning Sewing, drop in Saturday art sessions, and rotating creative workshops are designed to make art approachable and accessible for all ages and experience levels.
Keep Creating Art Wellness also features gallery space highlighting artists who may never have exhibited before, including individuals creating through anxiety, addiction recovery, or illness.
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to ask questions, use available resources, and take one step at a time. Looking ahead to 2026, Iovino is excited to grow, deepen community outreach, and expand creative offerings, including film based programming.

CONTINUUM CARE AT MECCA
THE SPA AT MECCA
333 US Highway 46, Fairfield | 973-826-0440 continuumatmecca.com
FFor Dr. Dena Lacara, launching her own medical and wellness practice wasn’t about following a trend—it was about reclaiming what healthcare had lost.
After years practicing within a system increasingly dominated by corporate oversight, insurance mandates, and administrative red tape, she began to feel a growing disconnect between medicine as it was meant to be and medicine as it had become. “The focus shifted from people to paperwork,” she explains. Declining reimbursements forced physicians to see unsustainable numbers of patients, while insurance companies inserted themselves deeper into the doctor-patient relationship, often obstructing care rather than improving it.
The defining moment came during a meeting that had nothing to do with patients and everything to do with documentation. The discussion centered on whether phrasing a diagnosis one way instead of another would generate a higher risk score. “That was it for me,” she says. “We weren’t talking about caring for people—we were talking about optimizing documentation for financial metrics. I knew then it was time to exit stage left and build something different.”
What she built is a practice rooted in accessibility, compassion, and integrity—one that blends medicine with aesthetics, wellness, and longevity care. Her mission is to serve as a consistent, trusted partner for patients at every stage of life, caring for them the way she would her own family. The goal is simple but transformative: make healthcare feel human again.
Her path to this point was shaped by determination and grit. From humble beginnings, she worked her way through a five-year undergraduate pharmacy program and then medical school, becoming the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Today, she leads a thriving practice that reflects her values—while striving to remain fully present as a mother of two. “Professionally, I’ve built something meaningful,” she says. “Personally, personally, I’ve done it without losing sight of who I am.”
Balancing ambition with everyday life remains a work in progress. While deeply fulfilled by her career, she’s learned that success isn’t measured solely by growth or titles. It’s measured by presence. She structures her days to be home shortly after her children return from school, prioritizes family time in the evenings, and often resumes work later once the house is quiet. “Success now is about alignment,” she says. “Who I am as a mother, wife, leader, and friend matters more than metrics.”
Looking ahead, she’s energized by what’s next—expanding comprehensive care, strengthening her team, and deepening relationships with patients. She’s especially excited about integrating wellness and longevity medicine, blending preventive strategies, personalized care, and innovative therapies. “The future of healthcare,” she says, “is helping people live longer, healthier, and more vibrant lives—and doing it with intention and heart.”

WWhen asked what inspired me to be part of our family business, my response was: “It started with a simple phone call. My husband, George, who had been in the home improvement business for over 20 years, called to say he needed my help for just a couple of days until they could hire another employee. Those couple of days turned into weeks, months, and now, nineteen years later, here I am. I love what I do for our customers and their homes. It gives me such satisfaction when our customers love the end result!” explains Kristina.
The mission at Gikas is to provide exceptional workmanship to restore customers’ homes to their original beauty or modernize their 100-year-old homes without losing their charm and character!
“Professionally, I am most proud that my knowledge and talent have allowed me to flourish in a male-dominated profession. The achievements I am most proud of personally are that my three children care for and love one another –there is no greater gift as a parent,” stated Kristina.

A
As founder and owner of Montclair Pediatric Dental Care, Dr. Tyra Jefferson Manso has spent nearly a decade redefining what a dental experience can feel like for children and families. Celebrating its 10 year anniversary this spring, her Montclair practice reflects a philosophy rooted in child development, emotional wellness, and community connection.
Originally planning a career in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Manso discovered her true calling during a pediatric rotation in dental school. “I realized I could help shape how children feel about healthcare for the rest of their lives,” she says. Today, she follows guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, encouraging families to establish a dental home early, often by a child’s first birthday.
Her office intentionally breaks the traditional stigma of the “scary dentist.” Designed as a bright, welcoming wellness space with natural light and thoughtful aesthetics, the environment grows with patients from toddler years through adolescence. The goal goes beyond healthy teeth. It is about supporting developing confidence and emotional safety during formative years.
Since opening the practice in 2016 after relocating from Brooklyn to Montclair, Dr. Manso has become deeply woven into the local community. She values the relationships built over time, often seeing young patients grow up both inside and outside the office. Mentorship and team culture remain central to her leadership style, with a strong focus on employee morale and creating a supportive workplace where staff members can thrive.
As a female entrepreneur, Dr. Manso speaks openly about the realities of balancing business ownership with family life and personal wellbeing. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand her impact beyond oral care into broader wellness initiatives that support families and help create positive healthcare experiences from an early age.
“We’re always practicing,” she says. “Whether in dentistry, business, or life, growth comes from creating space where people feel safe enough to thrive.”

Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) began over 30 years ago as an idea. There was never an official business plan, but simply a vision that crystalized into what has become a not-for-profit 501c3 arts education organization whose mission is to provide inclusive, developmental training in dance and related theater arts, serving thousands of children, teens, adults, and seniors annually.
“When I founded SMAPA, I had no idea what it took to run a dance school even though I had spent most of my life training in them,” states Sharron. There are certainly risks involved, but I held onto the belief that if you build it, they will come. That has been my mantra for the past 31 years…and they have come!
“I knew I wanted to teach and share my love of dance, while keeping it affordable and accessible to all,” says Sharron. Of course, it requires hard work, determination and sacrifice, but in the end, it pays off when you see what started as a vision, comes to fruition.
Sharron’s advice to anyone with a dream is to believe in yourself, believe in the value of your idea, and proceed with energy, commitment and faith. It’s not easy but in the end, it’s worth it. The simple act of taking the first step starts you on your way.

MMelissa Cipriano, Esq., is passionate about family law. In 2003, Melissa became a powerful female entrepreneur when she opened Cipriano Law Offices, P.C. Since its inception, Cipriano Law Offices, P.C., in West Caldwell, has focused on all aspects of family law, including divorce, custody, parenting time, mediation, and adoption. In addition, Melissa and three other lawyers at the firm are family law mediators. The mediators at Cipriano Law Offices, P.C., skillfully navigate even the most complex disputes toward meaningful results.
“Our firm is here to help people. Most of us come from similar situations to those of our clients. I am divorced, my parents were divorced, and I am a single parent.
Since we share similar life experiences, we understand our clients and seek to help them in efficient, cost-effective ways. We try to settle as many cases as possible, but we are willing to try those cases that need to be tried,” states Melissa.
Melissa is also a Statewide Approved Parent Coordinator and has greatly expanded her work as same. She is entrusted to manage high conflict parenting matters with authority and clarity. Often appointed by the Court, Melissa will help parents who are in difficult times come to resolutions to help reduce conflict. “Family conflict hurts the children the most, and speedy resolutions may reduce some of the pain,” says Melissa.
Melissa advises other women entrepreneurs who wish to establish a successful business to not undersell themselves. “Own your seat at the table and speak like you belong there,” says Melissa. “Owning a business is not easy, but the results speak for themselves. Hard work pays off. I work 365 days a year, but with my hard work I also get to enjoy quality time with my family.” She is a mother of two children and two little dogs, and she spends as much time as she can with them. To fulfill her professional and family responsibilities, she is willing to embrace a full schedule.

CConfidence often begins with feeling comfortable in your own skin, and for many people, that sense of selfassurance comes from small, thoughtful changes that help them look and feel their best. For Kelly F. DiStefano, MD, aesthetic medicine is not just about appearance. It is about helping patients feel confident, comfortable, and more like themselves.
As founder of Montclair Rejuvenation Center, MRC West Medspa, and Wellington Rejuvenation Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, Dr. Kelly has shaped a growing aesthetic medicine practice built around trust, expertise, and meaningful patient relationships.
Influenced by her father, renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon Kenneth DiStefano, MD, she developed an early appreciation for the connection between physical appearance and emotional well-being. Combined with her own interest in skincare and aesthetics, that perspective ultimately inspired her transition from anesthesiology into aesthetic medicine, where she found the opportunity to blend medical expertise with creativity while creating a more balanced lifestyle.
Today, Dr. Kelly’s full-service med spa offers carefully curated, medical-grade treatments designed to enhance natural beauty without surgery. Each patient begins with a comprehensive consultation focused on safety, comfort, and individualized goals grounded in medical expertise, resulting in customized treatment plans that may include injectables, laser therapies, body contouring, skin rejuvenation, and wellness services. Supported by a team of experienced nurse practitioners and estheticians, Dr. DiStefano has cultivated an environment that feels both refined and welcoming.
Her mission is simple yet impactful: to help clients feel more confident in their own skin through thoughtful, personalized aesthetic care that enhances what already makes them unique.
Beyond treating patients, she is deeply committed to education. As a trainer for Revance Aesthetics and creator of “Dr. Kelly’s Injectable Class,” she mentors medical professionals through hands-on training that emphasizes safety, precision, and artistry.
While her business continues to expand, Dr. Kelly measures success not only by growth, but by balance: a loyal client community, a supportive team culture, and the ability to be fully present with family and life beyond work. Looking ahead, she remains focused on growth, education, and helping people feel more confident in ways that are both natural and deeply personal.

Rooted in community and fueled by purpose, the owner of The Bar Method Montclair, Jenna Smith, has built more than a fitness studio—she has cultivated a space where strength, connection, and confidence thrive.
Today, her mission is centered on delivering challenging, results-driven workouts in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. She believes strength extends beyond the physical, and that connection and empowerment are just as essential as movement.
Her journey began not as an entrepreneur, but as a client. Like many members, she fell in love with how the workout made her feel: stronger, more empowered, and supported. While working in marketing and client services at another studio, she was offered the opportunity to manage The Bar Method Montclair. Becoming certified to teach allowed her to fully immerse herself in both the method and the community. When the former owners later approached her about purchasing the studio, it felt like a natural, full-circle moment. What made the decision clear was not just the business potential, but her desire to protect and grow a community that already felt like home.
Personally, she is most proud of being a working mother who models resilience, passion, and integrity for her children. Professionally, she takes pride in building and sustaining a thriving studio—from training exceptional instructors to celebrating member milestones and fostering meaningful relationships.
Her definition of success has evolved. Rather than burnout-driven growth, she values sustainability, impact, and balance. Looking ahead, she is excited to deepen community ties, collaborate with local and women-owned businesses, introduce new class formats, and refresh the studio space—all while continuing to grow something that supports others and her own life.

SMITH & COMPANY ~ Gift Giving Simplified 343 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell | 973-228-1167
W
What inspired me to start my business was ‘A dream’— it’s that simple. I was a stay at home mom to my three sons which was the most important job I ever had. All the while I was dreaming of opening a gift shop. Once the boys entered 5th, 7th & 9th grade I knew it was time to go for it!!! With my husband’s support, I opened my first store in October of 2007 with great success. In September of 2010 we expanded to our current location at 343 Bloomfield Avenue. With high hopes, lots of work, love and support from family and friends, a life long dream was achieved.
My vision for Smith & Company is that a when a customer enters the store—weather it’s a birth you’re celebrating, sweet sixteen, wedding, birthday, housewarming, or any occasion—they can successfully find a suitable gift. I curated a one-of-a-kind store which has the feeling of an old fashion gift shop with all the trends of today! Our Shop is built around the art of giving, where gift giving is simplified. We believe it is important to celebrate family, friends, and special occasions that bring us together. With all price points, you are sure to find something special for all of your gift giving needs! Our philosophy is to provide superior customer service, selection and value… all with friendly smile!
The advice I would give to a woman who is thinking of opening a retail store is, “Just go for it!!” Do your homework for sure. Reinvest in your business constantly and if you get it right it will flourish! Remember location, location, location when scouting out your space! Know your market, too. This is very important. Always treat your customers the way you would want to be treated! These are my simplified suggestion for success!

Since 2010, Winer, along with her husband Stephen and her amazing staff, has been operating the wildly successful Splurge Bakery in Millburn, known for baking and decorating cupcakes, cookies and treats. She’s continued coming up with innovative ideas including treat towers, cake buddies and expanding into tablescapes.
Winer says she’s most proud of her daughter, Raquel, who helped her build what Splurge has become today, along with her husband Stephen. The bakery has also been an opportunity for her to teach Raquel about the importance of hard work and how to build something of your own. Additionally, she cherishes the memories customers have made at in-store parties and through custom creations that mark life’s special moments.

A Sandra Fava
As the founder of Fava Law, Sandra Fava, Esq. has built a family law practice dedicated to providing clients with personalized, high-quality legal services. In 2026, she looks forward to expanding her firm’s offerings beyond matrimonial law to include complementary practice areas such as trust and estates and criminal law. “This expansion will allow us to serve our clients more comprehensively,” she explains.
A significant trend in family law that Fava is watching closely is the potential impact of the recent (January 2026) change in New Jersey’s custody statute (N.J.S.A. 9:2-4) that shifts away from a default focus on contact with both parents post-separation when a child repeatedly refuses contact. The new language focuses on the child’s protection and welfare–physically and emotionally being paramount. Safety concerns are now the first priority and children’s preferences have been given greater clarity. In cases where the court orders therapy, including reunification therapy, there are clearer limits and parameters.
Fava’s journey into law was not straightforward. Despite always wanting to be an attorney, she initially avoided family law due to her sister’s difficult divorce. However, during law school, a pro bono domestic violence case changed her perspective. “Working on that case was a turning point,” she recalls. “I realized how fulfilling it was to help people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.”
That passion for advocacy led her to build a firm where she could prioritize both legal excellence and compassionate client service. “Leaving a 20-year career in big law allowed me to create a practice that focuses on personal attention without the constraints of a corporate structure,” she explains. By having control over case management and fee structures, Fava ensures that her clients receive the best possible support during difficult times.
Beyond her practice, Fava serves as a trustee on the board of CASA for Morris and Sussex counties, advocating for children in foster care. She is also actively involved in fundraising for breast cancer research.
With 21 years of legal experience, a passion for service, and a vision for the future, Sandra Fava continues to make a meaningful impact in family law and her community.
Randy Elman’s musical upbringing sparked a lifelong devotion to the performing arts. Today, as owner of the Musical Theatre Conservatory (MTC), she carries on her parents’ legacy by bringing the joy of theater to children across New Jersey. Elman founded MTC to provide high-caliber musical theatre training close to home, making professional-level instruction accessible to local families.
MTC’s three-week “Broadway Boot Camp” in Livingston offers students ages 7-18 an immersive theater experience. Children study voice, dance, acting, stage combat, improv, and audition techniques, moving from daily classes to rehearsals that culminate in a fully costumed Broadway Cabaret. Students rehearse in New Jersey and perform in New York City, giving them the thrill of both worlds.
Elman’s “Theatre for Life” philosophy focuses on building confidence, creativity, and community. While some of Randy’s past students go on to perform professionally, including Tony Award winner Brandon Uranowitz, the program is designed to benefit every child.
“We train everyone as if they were going to be professional,” says Elman, “but many of our students simply gain skills they’ll use throughout their lives.”
Guest artists and Broadway performers regularly work with students, teaching choreography and sharing real-world insights about the industry. Beyond performing, students develop interview skills, quick thinking through improv, and self-assurance that extends far beyond the stage.
“When shy kids find their voice by the end of the summer, that’s the most rewarding part,” Elman says. “I truly believe this work makes a powerful difference in kids’ lives.”

GENTLE CARING DENTISTRY

IIt is not an understatement to describe Dr. Linda Stone and her daughter, Dr. Vanna Stone, as the dynamic duo of dentistry. Their personalities and approach to dentistry create an atmosphere in which they strive to give someone a beautiful smile and a great experience at Gentle Caring Dentistry.
Dr. Linda Stone observes that when a person does not smile, others may get the wrong impression about their personality. One of the things she enjoys most about dentistry is “giving someone confidence in their smile.”
Dr. Vanna Stone underscores how women have attained positions and respect in the field. “When I went to dental school, 51% of students in my class were women. My mother only had 10% in her class.” She credits her mother as being her mentor and helping to shape her career. Dr. Vanna Stone enjoys the many aspects dentistry affords. “It’s science and art. It involves problem solving, creativity and hand skills.”
The dentists are devoted to restoring and enhancing a patient’s smile using conservative, state-of-the-art procedures. Dr. Linda Stone assures patients that Gentle Caring Dentistry uses the best materials available. The dentists treat the gamut of dental concerns including preventative care, cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening. Dr. Vanna Stone emphasizes the importance of preventative care. “It is important to prioritize the quality of your dental health,” she says. “Dental health is huge in the overall scheme of your health.”
Karen Naithe, Takia Livingston (co-owner), and Mayra Da Silva
FFor Dr. Takia Livingston, co-owner of Kitchen Tune-Up and Bath Tune-Up with her husband Steven, the path into home renovation began unexpectedly but quickly became a natural fit. A dentist by training with a strong eye for detail, she found herself drawn to design while renovating her own kitchen and searching for a business that offered both creativity and flexibility as a working mother. What started as a personal interest soon grew into a thriving company focused on helping homeowners reimagine the spaces they use every day.
“Our mission is to bring smiles to our clients’ faces,” Livingston says. “We take what people envision and help turn it into something real.”
Central to that vision is a collaborative, women-led team. Bath sales specialist Karen Naithe says the work combines connection and creativity in meaningful ways. “I love meeting new people and discovering how they live,” she explains.
“Design is about translating someone’s ideas into a space that truly reflects them.”
Senior Project Manager Mayra Da Silva, whose background is in interior design, thrives on the problem-solving side of the business. “Every project is different,” she says. “I enjoy supporting the team and making sure each step leads to the best possible experience for the client.”
As an immigrant entrepreneur working in a traditionally maledominated industry, Livingston is proud of the company’s growth and resilience. “There’s a perception that construction is a man’s world, but women belong here too,” she says.
Today, the company continues to evolve and expand its services while remaining focused on collaboration, balance, and community. Their advice to other women is simple: “Trust yourself, embrace opportunity, and go for it.”

TThe month of March marks National Nutrition Month, making it the perfect time to reset habits and refocus on feeling our best after the long winter months. Instead of drastic diets or shortlived detoxes, nutrition experts agree that sustainable, balanced choices lead to lasting health benefits.
A healthy plate begins with variety. Filling half your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables helps ensure a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats support energy levels and keep blood sugar steady throughout the day. Simple swaps—like choosing whole-grain bread, adding beans to salads, or incorporating fish once or twice a week—can make a meaningful difference.
During National Nutrition Month, it is also a good time to pay attention to fiber and gut health, which play a role in digestion, immunity, and even mood. Foods such as leafy greens, berries, oats, lentils, and nuts support a healthy gut while promoting heart health and disease prevention.
Lifestyle habits matter just as much as food choices. Staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep, and practicing mindful eating— slowing down and listening to hunger cues—can improve digestion and overall well-being. As daylight increases, getting outside for walks or light movement helps boost metabolism and mental health.
Rather than striving for perfection, nutrition experts recommend setting realistic goals. Small, consistent changes build momentum and create habits that last well beyond spring. Paying attention to your nutrition is not about restriction—it’s about nourishment, balance, and setting the foundation for a healthier year ahead.
After a Decade of Nightly Pain, Lisa Found Relief in an Unexpected Place
How Rose Gold Wellness Helped One Woman Sleep through the Night Again
For more than a decade, Lisa M. lived in fear of her own bed.
“Every night felt like a countdown to torture,” she said. “I would lie in bed, wide-eyed, waiting for the pain to hit. And when it did—it was like being struck by lightning inside my head.”
Lisa was suffering from cluster headaches, an excruciating and rare form of headache disorder. Sometimes called “suicide headaches” due to their severity, cluster headaches often strike in patterns —sometimes at night, sometimes during the day-but always with crushing, debilitating force. They robbed Lisa of more than just sleep —they stripped her of joy, energy, and hope.
“I tried everything,” she said. “Prescription meds, neurology visits, sleep studies. I followed every piece of advice I was given. But nothing worked. Eventually, I stopped hoping anything would. I was in a really dark place.”
Then she found Rose Gold Wellness, a clinic known for restoring not only health but also hope.
Located in Montclair, Rose Gold Wellness blends modern, integrative solutions with the time-tested science of acupuncture to deliver real, lasting results. And while cluster headaches may be rare, conditions like migraine are widespread and equally devastating —leaving millions of people sidelined by pain, nausea, vision disturbances, and neurological symptoms. Rose Gold Wellness addresses both. The focus isn’t just on treating the symptoms —it’s understanding the whole person and giving them their life back.
“When Lisa came to us, she was exhausted, discouraged, and rightfully skeptical,” said Rosie Strelnick, owner of Rose Gold Wellness. “But what we see every day is that when you meet a person with compassion, listen to their story, and build a treatment plan just for them —everything can change.”
Lisa began a personalised care plan that included ATP Resonance BioTherapy®, O3 ReBoot Therapy®, and targeted acupuncture designed to calm overactive pain pathways and reduce inflammation. And then —everything changed.
“For the first time in over a decade, I slept through the night,” Lisa said, her voice cracking. “I remember waking up and crying —not from pain, but from relief. I didn’t even know that kind of rest was possible anymore.”
The rest has transformed Lisa’s life.
“When you no longer dread your own bedroom —when sleep becomes a comfort again, not a threat —it changes everything. I feel rested. I’m present with my family. I can think clearly again. I have a will to live again.”
Rose Gold Wellness has become known as a last resort with the best results. Patients from across the Northeast seek their expertise when other avenues have failed. And Lisa’s story is just one of many.
“We specialize in giving people their lives back,” Rosie said. “It’s what we’re here for.”
If you or someone you love is battling a chronic condition with no relief in sight, know this: hope is not lost. At Rose Gold Wellness, it might be the beginning.
Recharging After Seasonal Winter Burnout
AAs winter fades, spring brings a natural invitation to reset. Yet for many, the end of the season doesn’t arrive with instant energy. Instead, there may be lingering fatigue, low motivation, or a sense of being out of sync. The good news? These feelings are common—and spring offers the perfect opportunity to recharge.
Winter asks a lot of us. Short days, full calendars, and fewer chances to step outside can quietly drain energy over time. As daylight returns, the body and mind begin to respond—but they often need a little encouragement. Rather than pushing harder, ease into the season with simple, supportive changes.
Natural light is a powerful mood booster. Even a short walk outdoors or a few minutes of sunshine in the morning can help reset energy levels. Movement doesn’t have to be intense; gentle stretching, walking, or light strength work can awaken the body and improve focus. Nourishing meals and steady hydration also play a key role in restoring stamina.
Spring is also a chance to refresh routines. Reworking schedules, setting healthier boundaries, and making room for moments of rest can help prevent burnout from carrying into summer. Small pleasures—opening windows, planning something to look forward to, or reconnecting with activities you enjoy—can make a meaningful difference.
Seasonal burnout isn’t a setback; it’s a signal to slow down and reset. With a thoughtful, optimistic approach, spring becomes less about catching up and more about moving forward—feeling lighter, more energized, and ready for what’s ahead.
At Benchmark, we’ve dedicated over 28 years to becoming one of the Northeast’s largest senior living providers, never losing sight of excellence. While awardwinning services set us apart, it’s powerful relationships that define the Benchmark Experience. Now, we’re proud to bring our exceptional care and experiences to the Garden State with Benchmark at Roseland—joining our 68 communities, including on Long Island and in Westchester County. Discover a new standard of senior living
Preventing Injury When Easing Back Into Outdoor Activity
AAs warmer weather arrives, many people feel eager to head back outdoors— walking, running, biking, gardening, or resuming favorite recreational activities. After months of colder temperatures and more sedentary routines, that motivation is refreshing. But jumping back in too quickly can increase the risk of injury, making a gradual approach essential.
During winter, muscles often lose strength and flexibility, and joints may feel stiffer than usual. Sudden increases in intensity or duration can strain muscles, irritate joints, or lead to overuse injuries. The key to staying active all season is easing into movement rather than pushing for immediate results.
Start by keeping sessions short and manageable. Whether it’s a brisk walk, light jog, or outdoor workout, give your body time to adapt. Warming up
A Smile Opens a Door for a Lifetime of
Sets Us Apart
matters—dynamic movements like leg swings, arm circles, or a few minutes of walking help prepare muscles and improve range of motion. Stretching after activity supports recovery and helps maintain flexibility.
Proper footwear is another oftenoverlooked factor. Worn-out or ill-fitting shoes can affect alignment and increase joint stress. Investing in supportive footwear can make a noticeable difference in comfort and injury prevention.
Listening to your body is just as important as staying consistent. Mild soreness is normal when restarting activity, but sharp pain, swelling, or lingering discomfort are signals to slow down or rest. Rest days aren’t setbacks—they’re part of progress.
Moisturizing Your Skincare for Spring
As winter winds down and early spring approaches, many people notice their skin looks dull, tight, or uneven. Cold air, indoor heat, and heavier winter products can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, making seasonal transition the ideal time for a skincare reset.
Start by gently reintroducing exfoliation. During winter, dead skin cells tend to build up, preventing products from absorbing properly. Opt for mild chemical exfoliants or enzyme-based formulas once or twice a week to reveal brighter, smoother skin without irritation.
Next, focus on barrier repair. Look for ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and hyaluronic acid, which help replenish moisture while strengthening the skin. As temperatures rise, begin swapping ultra-heavy creams for lighter moisturizers that still provide hydration but won’t clog pores.
This is also a smart time to reassess cleansers. If you relied on creamy, rich formulas all winter, consider transitioning to a gentle gel or lotion cleanser that removes buildup without stripping the skin.
Finally, don’t forget sunscreen. Even before beach days arrive, daily SPF is essential for protecting newly exfoliated skin and preventing premature aging. By making these thoughtful adjustments, your complexion can move seamlessly from dry and winter-worn to fresh, healthy, and dewy just in time for spring.

Determination
BY BARRY FARBER
“Never give up on a dream that could be, and you will reach the Magic Tree.”
-Sherman the Turtle
We’ve reached the fifth and final secret in The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree—and there’s a reason Determination comes last. In all my years of interviewing top performers and sharing their lessons through books, radio, and television, one truth rises above the rest: determination is the force that turns “maybe” into “absolutely.” It’s the difference between those who reach the Magic Tree and those who walk away just a few steps too soon.
I’ve watched people with average talent climb higher than those with extraordinary ability—not because they were luckier, smarter, or stronger, but because they simply refused to quit. Determination has a power that talent alone can’t match. Talent may open the door, but determination is what knocks it off its hinges.
People often ask me, “How do I get motivated?” But that’s the wrong question. The real question is: How do I stay consistent—every single day—moving my goals forward inch by inch?
Because consistency is where confidence grows. It’s where momentum builds. It’s where results start to show. I often say, “By the mile it’s a trial, by the yard it’s hard, but by the inch it’s a cinch.” And it’s true—success is rarely about giant leaps. It’s about steady, meaningful inches that eventually carry you miles.
I wrote this children’s book series to share five simple, timeless principles—lessons shaped by thousands of conversations with world-class athletes, performers, surgeons, entrepreneurs, billionaires, and changemakers. Their backgrounds were different, but their values were the same. These lessons became the foundation of 14 of my books and hundreds of my programs, and they all point to what truly matters in a life well lived.
If we had to choose five qualities to build a strong, resilient character—child or adult—you’d be hard-pressed to find better pillars than: Service, Attitude, Courage, Empathy, and Determination. These aren’t just concepts to read about. They’re tools to live by.
As Ella Wheeler Wilcox wrote:
“There is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can hinder or control the firm resolve of a determined soul.”
Determination is the final secret because it fuels all the others. It is the action behind a positive attitude… the bravery behind courage… the compassion within empathy… and the heart behind service. When determination becomes your daily habit— not an occasional spark—you move through challenges instead of around them.
And when a child—or any one of us—carries determination forward, inch by inch, day by day, the Magic Tree isn’t a far-off dream. It becomes the destination we are steadily, confidently, and inevitably walking toward.
