LOCAL HEROES

Evie Singer Is Catching Livingston Residents Being Kind BY JACKIE SCHATELL Evie recently recognized Sheranda, a Kings Food Markets employee known for warmly greeting customers and making people feel welcome. She presented her with a “Kindness Rocks” bag, a small gift and a rock bearing an encouraging message. When Evie shared the moment on Facebook, nearly 200 people responded, many praising Sheranda and sharing their own experiences with her kindness. The reaction confirmed what Evie already believed: Small gestures matter, and people notice them. Evie taught preschool in Livingston for 17 years and often encouraged children to recognize kindness in others. Through the new campaign, she hopes to bring that lesson beyond the classroom by involving local stores, schools, nonprofits and residents. Businesses may display “Kindness Rocks” stickers and help recognize customers, employees, or community members who make someone’s day better. Her goal is not to reward grand acts. Rather, she wants to highlight easily overlooked moments, such as an employee who is patient, a helpful neighbor, a thoughtful child, or a supportive stranger. Evie’s commitment to spreading kindness began years ago when she started painting and sharing rocks bearing uplifting messages. She also creates memorial rocks for people who have lost pets, with proceeds benefiting an organization that trains guide dogs, and has supported programs serving cancer patients and nonprofits.

Evie Singer, left, presents Livingston Kings employee, Sheranda with “Kindness Rocks” gifts, recognizing her kindness toward customers.

In today’s culture, kindness is more important than ever, and Livingston resident Evie Singer is on a mission to make it impossible to miss. Known for her Kindness Rocks movement, Evie is expanding her efforts through an Essex County-wide initiative called “Get Caught Being Kind.”

A sampling of “Be Kind” rocks.

The campaign recognizes people whose everyday actions make life brighter for those around them. Evie carries kindness rocks, stickers, small gifts, and “Kindness Rocks” bags, watching for opportunities to surprise someone who demonstrates patience, generosity, or thoughtfulness. As she reminds the community, “You never know when you’ll be caught being kind.”

For now, Evie is recognizing kindness wherever she encounters it. Eventually, she hopes Essex County residents will nominate deserving people and more organizations will help the initiative grow.

“I love to spread joy,” she said. Through “Get Caught Being Kind,” Evie is reminding Essex County residents that heroism does not always require a dramatic act. “Sometimes, it is simply being kind to another person,” she said. For information or to become involved, email: singer.evie@gmail.com.

KINDNESS STARTS WITHIN AND SPREADS OUTWARD In recognition of September’s Self-Care Awareness Month, we are highlighting local heroes whose stories remind us that kindness can take many forms, from caring for ourselves to showing compassion, support, and understanding to others. #SelfCareAwarenessMonth

LOCAL HEROES

Glen Ridge Senior Turns Her Sister’s Struggle into a Growing Mission of Kindness “The kids were so happy afterward, and they wanted me to come back,” Keswin said. “As much as it made an impact on them, it made an impact on me.” By helping children recognize their own worth, Keswin also discovered greater confidence in herself. Her work extends beyond the classroom. During her sophomore year, Keswin founded Hands 4 Hope, an outside-of-school, student-led community service club and nonprofit effort that creates volunteer opportunities for local teenagers. Keswin and her peers have delivered holiday meals, supported animal-adoption events, visited nursing home residents, and organized art projects at Family of Caring at Montclair. Hands 4 Hope also raised $1,000 for CASA of Essex County, which advocates for children in foster care. Keswin is now carrying that mission beyond New Jersey. As she hopes to study child psychology in college, she is already finding a way to serve the New Orleans community. She is preparing backpacks filled with supplies and copies of Mossy the Bear for Son of a Saint, an organization supporting boys growing up without fathers.

Esmae Keswin reads Mossy the Bear to students at Central Avenue School in Glen Ridge, teaching kindness while helping children build confidence and manage big feelings.

What began with one sister’s struggle has become a promise to other children: You matter, your voice matters, and you do not have to face your fears alone.

When Esmae Keswin saw how difficult it could be for her younger sister to find her voice, she decided to create something that might help her and other children find theirs. The Glen Ridge High School senior wrote Mossy the Bear after watching her nine-year-old sister, Harper, struggle with anxiety and selective mutism. Through Mossy’s story and activities, children learn to manage big feelings, encourage themselves with words such as “I am brave,” and understand that kindness begins with how they treat themselves. Keswin used the book to create an interactive kindness curriculum for kindergarten and first-grade students at Central Avenue School. After reading the story aloud, she invited children to write something they liked about themselves on paper leaves and add them to a Kindness Tree. Each child also received a Mossy the Bear stuffed animal as a reminder to show themselves the same compassion they offer others. She hopes to offer the class more often for other children too.

Keswin spends time with a puppy at an adoption event, part of Hands 4 Hope, the student-led organization she founded to create volunteer opportunities.

West Orange Duo’s Love of Fall Comes to Life

BY JACKIE SCHATELL

Writer Receives ArcMorris Media Excellence Award

Together, she and her mother now share that enthusiasm through The Autumn Charm Company, crafting imaginative fall scenes filled with pumpkins of every shape, size, and color, with mums, gourds, corn stalks, and straw bales. Their favorite part is helping neighbors embrace the season’s cozy feeling with custom displays that last from September through Thanksgiving. Mother-daughter team Maureen Clarke and Christine Jones turn their love of fall into custom seasonal porch displays.

ackie Schatell, a feature writer for Vicinity Media Group, Inc., (VMG) received the ArcMorris Media Excellence Award at the organization’s 2026 A Night of Many Stars Annual Awards Gala. The honor recognized her article, “ArcMorris is Empowering Lives and Building Community,” for advancing understanding of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The article was featured in VMG’s Vicinity Magazine in October 2025.

or West Orange motherdaughter team Maureen Clarke and Christine Jones, fall is more than a season; it is something to celebrate. Christine has always loved Halloween, holiday gatherings, and transforming everyday spaces with festive decorations. After moving from Brooklyn to a house with a porch in West Orange, she finally had room to indulge, creating colorful pumpkin displays that soon caught the attention of friends and family.

North Caldwell Woman Finds Renewal Across Asia

or her 50th birthday, North Caldwell resident Vinni Taneja gave herself a gift: 95 days in Asia, including 60 days traveling alone. A perpetual student, she immersed herself in Qigong training in Thailand, led a yoga retreat in India, explored Bali, and ended her journey in the Maldives. Along the way, she fulfilled childhood dreams, including riding in a hot-air balloon and witnessing thousands of lanterns rise over Chiang Mai. She visited an elephant sanctuary, reflected at Bali’s Water Temple, and formed friendships with women worldwide. After years of caring for family, building a career, and supporting others, Taneja used the journey to turn inward. She returned home renewed and reminded that learning, courage, and self-discovery have no age limit. Learn more at chakrawellness.io.

ArcMorris serves Morris County residents with I/DD and their families through programs that foster independence and inclusion. Schatell called it a privilege to share stories that challenge misconceptions, build connections and spotlight community-strengthening work. “We are incredibly proud of Jackie and the recognition she received,” said Vicinity Media Group, Inc. owners David and Cathy Black. “Her articles reflect the heart of our publications by sharing stories about people and organizations making a difference. She brings care, curiosity, and compassion to stories that might go untold.” 18 | Suburban Essex | September 2026

ivingston resident Swathi Bhatia has spent two decades exploring the connection between energy, meditation and well-being. Her journey began in Bangalore, India, in 2006, when her father turned to Pranic Healing during a difficult time in his business. Curious about the changes she witnessed, Bhatia studied the practice and discovered how meaningful it felt to help others. After moving to the United States, she continued offering guided meditation and no-touch energy-healing sessions, both in person and online. She says her greatest reward is seeing others feel calmer, lighter, and more centered- work she now considers not just a practice, but her calling. Learn more at goldenprana.org.

Bhatia will offer an introductory Pranic Healing & Twin Hearts Meditation wellness session on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 11 am –12:30 pm at Excel Martial Arts Academy, 277 Eisenhower Parkway, Livingston. Livingston Student Creates AI Tool to Decode Restaurant Reviews

ivingston High School student Arjun Tiwari is entering 10th grade with an impressive project. After seeing favorite local businesses close, including an ice cream shop he loved, Arjun wondered whether owners understood what customers were saying. He created FeedbackAnalysis.AI, a free website that analyzes hundreds of Google reviews and summarizes customer satisfaction, strengths, and areas needing improvement. The platform identifies factors most relevant to each business. For example, restaurants receive insights on food, service, price, cleanliness, and atmosphere, while other businesses are evaluated on different criteria.

More Than Just a Street Fair A Beloved Caldwell Tradition Gives Back to the Community BY MARLENE WALDOCK, KIWANIS STREET FAIR VOLUNTEER

What brings more than 35,000 people, over 200 vendors, and 60 sponsors to Caldwell every year—and helps raise thousands of dollars for the community? The annual Caldwell Street Fair, takes place Sunday, October 4, 2026. For 34 years, the Rotary Club of the Caldwells and the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex have joined forces to produce one of New Jersey’s largest and most anticipated street fairs. But while the event is filled with shopping, food, and family fun, there is an even bigger reason to attend: the Caldwell Street Fair is a major fundraiser that allows both organizations to give back to the community and support charitable causes locally and beyond. With more than 200 vendors, visitors can browse an array of crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday items, and unique finds. Food trucks, local restaurants and

the Cloverleaf Tavern provide plenty of options for hungry fairgoers, while children can enjoy rides, inflatables, rock climbing and more. The fair’s long-standing sponsors— including Premier Sponsor Paul Miller Group, Diamond Sponsor Calandra, and Platinum Sponsors Sunrise ShopRite of West Caldwell, Kearny Bank and The Cloverleaf Tavern— help make the event possible. A 50/50 raffle provides another opportunity to support the fundraising effort. Behind the scenes, volunteers spend an entire year planning the fair, led by Rotarian Erin Gloor, committee chair and owner of USA Twisterz. “Community service is a choice to do something bigger than yourself. It’s showing up, giving back, and building for others,” says Gloor.

34 34

ANNUAL

The tradition began in 1991 when June Van Zandt, then president of the Rotary Club of the Caldwells, proposed a street fair as a fundraiser. Recognizing that the Rotary Club was too small to produce the event alone, she reached out to Ross Martindale Jr., president of the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex. The partnership has continued ever since. What began in 1992 with approximately 10,000 attendees has grown into a spectacular annual celebration stretching from Roseland Avenue to Espy Street and throughout several side streets. So come for the shopping, stay for the food and family fun—and know that your participation helps make a difference. The Caldwell Street Fair is truly more than just a street fair. It’s a 34-year community tradition built on giving back. For more information visit: www.caldwellstreetfair.com

MISSION STATEMENT: To generate the financial resources essential for funding the community initiatives of the Rotary Club of The Caldwells and the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex, enabling both clubs to give back thousands of dollars to the communities they serve and beyond, while providing a fun-filled day for everyone. 26 | Suburban Essex | September 2026

Get Your Fireplace Ready for the Season

As autumn settles in and temperatures begin to drop, there’s nothing quite like the warmth and ambiance of a crackling fire. Before lighting that first fire of the season, however, it’s important to make sure your fireplace and chimney are clean, safe, and ready to use. Start with a professional chimney inspection and cleaning, particularly if you have a wood-burning fireplace. Creosote, a flammable substance that builds up inside the chimney, can increase the risk

of a chimney fire. A professional can also check for cracks, blockages, or other issues that may affect proper ventilation. Inspect the fireplace itself. Remove old ashes, but leave a thin layer if you use a traditional wood-burning fireplace, as it can help insulate the fire. Check the damper to make sure it opens and closes properly, allowing smoke to exit efficiently. Stock up on properly seasoned firewood before the cold weather arrives.

Adequately dried wood burns more efficiently and produces less smoke and creosote than freshly cut wood. Store it outdoors, elevated off the ground and protected from rain and snow. Finally, review basic fireplace safety. Keep furniture, curtains, rugs, and décor several feet away from the fire, and use a sturdy screen to contain sparks. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working throughout the home.

Creating a Fall-Friendly Pollinator Garden

When summer flowers begin to fade, don’t let the garden lose its color—or its importance to pollinators. In fall, choose plants that give bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects food and shelter as they prepare for the colder months. Choose late-blooming plants that keep pollinators supplied well into autumn. Plant native asters and goldenrod for nectar when many other flowers have finished blooming, and add fall-blooming perennials such as sedum for seasonal interest and a reliable food source. Choose native plants whenever possible, since they are adapted to local growing conditions and often support a wider variety of wildlife. Select a combination that offers blooms at different times throughout the growing season rather than

by Smitty’s

concentrating everything into spring and summer. Leave some spent flower heads and plant stems standing through winter to provide seeds for birds and shelter for insects. Keep some fallen leaves in garden beds rather than removing every leaf, so they can continue offering valuable habitat. Avoid using pesticides whenever possible, particularly when pollinators are actively visiting plants. Instead, support a healthy garden ecosystem by providing diverse plants and natural habitat. Create a fall pollinator garden that is beautiful, low-maintenance, and beneficial to local wildlife. Choose plants thoughtfully and be patient so your garden can keep supporting nature long after the peak of summer has passed.

Warm & Welcoming Fall Entryway Ideas

Fall is the perfect opportunity to refresh your entryway and make it feel warm, inviting, and season-ready. With a few simple updates, you can transform even a small entrance into a welcoming autumn retreat. Start with the front door. A seasonal wreath made with dried leaves, branches, berries, or flowers instantly adds fall character. For a more understated look, consider a simple arrangement of natural grasses or an evergreen wreath that can transition into winter.

Installation Exp. 12/31/26

Inside, create a practical yet attractive landing spot for the items that come with cooler weather. A small bench provides a convenient place to remove shoes, while baskets can hold scarves, gloves, and hats. In addition, hooks or a coat rack keep jackets organized and prevent them from piling up. Layering textures can also make an entryway feel cozier. For example, add a runner in a rich autumn-inspired pattern, a woven basket, or a soft throw. You don’t have to rely on traditional orange and red;

warm neutrals, deep greens, muted golds, and natural wood tones can create a sophisticated seasonal palette. Finally, add a few carefully chosen decorative touches. For instance, a bowl filled with pinecones or a vase of dried flowers can bring the beauty of fall indoors without overwhelming the space. The goal is to create an entryway that looks beautiful while remaining functional. In the end, a welcoming home begins the moment you walk through the door.

MONK’S HOME IMPROVEMENTS HAS BEEN SERVICING CLIENTS IN NEW JERSEY FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS. AS THE COMPANY GREW, ITS REQUESTS FOR SMALLER RENOVATIONS AND REMODELS EXPANDED AS WELL. SO IN 2014, MONK’S OPENED A FULL SHOWROOM AND BUILT A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODEL THAT HAS GROWN INTO WHAT IT IS TODAY.

“As customers began to contract us for larger jobs, we realized the process for sourcing materials wasn’t very userfriendly,” said Cortney Tripodi, Director of Design for Monk’s Home Improvement. “We wanted a one-stop shop where clients could get the knowledge they needed from design experts while also being able to choose from a wide selection of products on-site.”

take measurements and collect data, giving designers the tools needed to begin the design process. A 90-minute consultation with a dedicated designer allows clients to build their “wish list” through inspirational photos, one-on-one discussions, and showroom selections. Together, a tailored 3D design is built to meet the client’s budget and capture their desired vision in just five days.

And that’s what they did when they opened the Morristown location, providing remodeling expertise to clients from start to finish. Monk’s commitment to customer service starts in the planning phase, when an estimator visits the client’s home to

“We came up with this method because we realized how much assistance people needed in the planning and design process,” Tripodi, an 11-year veteran with Monk’s, says. “How can we charge people during an exploratory phase when

clients have so many questions and designs are changing multiple times?” One thing that sets Monk’s apart is its approach to each project. Their dedicated crews work exclusively on one renovation at a time, from start to finish. This allows the team to stay in sync and fully informed, minimizing disruptions for clients while ensuring permits, inspections, and plans are handled properly. “No matter how big or small your remodel or renovation is, we want to make sure you don’t run into any delays or setbacks,” she said.

The biggest piece of advice we can give to clients is not to get too caught up on aesthetics. It’s so important to think about functionality in your home because that really is what makes the difference. – Cortney Tripodi

Monk’s has a seasoned team of nine designers on staff, each with a variety of ideas to help turn customers’ visions into reality. Its Morristown and Fanwood showrooms offer everything from cabinetry, countertops, tile, sinks, flooring, windows, decking, and interior and exterior lighting to a variety of manufacturers and reputable brands, including Newark-based Fabuwood, Omega, and Ferguson.

We wanted a one-stop shop where clients could get the knowledge they needed from design experts while also being able to choose from a wide selection of products on-site. – Cortney Tripodi Given today’s market, Tripodi says homeowners are increasingly focusing on remodeling their kitchens and baths. She says trends are shifting as well, from stark white spaces to softer whites, while natural wood and warmer tones are making a comeback. “The biggest piece of advice we can give to clients is not to get too caught up on aesthetics,” Tripodi notes. “It’s so important to think about functionality in your home because that really is what makes the difference.” Monk’s Home Improvements offers an extensive array of remodeling beyond just kitchens and baths, including basements, closets, laundry rooms, built-ins, and more. “Any space in your home, Monk’s can offer a design service for,” Tripodi says. The Back-to-School Skill No One Talks About This September, Suicide Prevention Month, is a reminder that prevention starts early, with listening skills you can use to make kids & teens feel heard

It’s not a new backpack or an app to track homework. The most underrated back-toschool tool is one you have, but may need to hone a bit—the ability to really listen. Every September, families brace for the same familiar chaos: new schedules, social pressures and anxieties about grades, friendships, and fitting in. Parents feel it too, juggling logistics while trying to stay emotionally available. But here’s what often gets lost in the shuffle: when your teenager mumbles “I’m fine” and walks past you into their room it doesn’t have to be a dead end—it can be an opening if you know how to meet it. This is where simple but specific skills of “active listening” become essential. It’s a skill that can be learned and practiced. Crisis counselors on the national 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are trained to use active listening skills in some of the highest-stakes conversations imaginable during moments when someone is in real distress and may not have words for what they’re feeling. The techniques they rely on aren’t complicated, but they are deliberate:

• Reframe, don’t redirect. Instead of jumping to advice, like, “Just talk to your teacher” or some other solution, reflect what you heard. A reflection could be “It sounds like the new class schedule is stressing you out.” This tells your child you understand why they are feeling the way they are, without solving anything. • Ask open, not leading, questions. “What was the hardest part of today?” is more likely to get a response than, “Did you have a good day?” Open questions convey genuine curiosity, not an interrogation. • Sit in the silence. Crisis counselors are trained to let pauses breathe instead of rushing to fill them. Kids and teens often need time to find the right words, especially about something they’re embarrassed or scared to admit. • Validate before you solve problems. “It makes sense you’d feel overwhelmed,” lands very differently than, “You’ll be fine, everyone goes through this.” Validation isn’t agreement, it’s acknowledgment of feelings and it can open the door to a real conversation. None of this requires a psychology degree—just practice, patience, and suppressing the instinct to fix things immediately. For families navigating the stress of a new school year, active listening can be the difference between a kid who shuts down and one who opens up. The payoff extends beyond September. Kids and teens who feel consistently heard at home are more likely to come to their parents when something is seriously wrong— not just about a hard math test, but about the things that keep parents up at night: bullying, mental health struggles, risky decisions. Active listening, practiced

44 | Suburban Essex | September 2026

early and often, builds the kind of trust that doesn’t evaporate under pressure. “At its heart, listening is how we let someone know they don’t have to carry things alone,” says Mary Claire Givelber, Executive Director of Caring Contact. “When a young person feels truly heard, it can make it easier for them to reach out again when they need support.” Caring Contact, a nonprofit crisis Lifeline and education organization serving central and northern New Jersey, offers Listening Skills Workshops to schools, workplaces, and community organizations often for free or at low cost. These sessions teach the same core techniques used by trained crisis counselors, adapted for parents, educators, and anyone who wants to have better, more honest conversations with the young people in their lives. If this resonates with you and you’re interested in going further, Caring Contact will begin its next intensive training course for volunteer Crisis Lifeline Listeners on September 15. It’s a meaningful way to turn this skill into service for a community that needs more people who know how to truly listen. And as an added benefit, Caring Contact volunteer Listeners often find these skills strengthen the conversations they have with their own families. Back-to-school season will always come with stress. But how families move through it often comes down to something simple: whether kids feel like someone is actually listening. That’s a skill every parent can build starting today. To book a workshop or volunteer with Caring Contact, a volunteer-powered crisis lifeline and community educator, visit www.caringcontact.org.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

September marks Library Card SignUp Month, a nationwide campaign reminding communities of the value a library card brings. More than just access to books, a library card is a passport to knowledge, creativity, and connection. For families, a library card helps foster a love of reading from an early age. Children can explore picture books, attend story times, and take part in after-school programs designed to spark curiosity and imagination. Teens and adults benefit, too, with access to study resources, career development tools, and community events that encourage lifelong learning.

Library Card Sign-Up Month is also a celebration of community. Libraries provide safe, inclusive spaces where neighbors can gather, learn, and share ideas. Whether it’s joining a book club, attending a lecture, or exploring local history archives, the library connects people to each other and to resources they might not otherwise discover. Signing up for a library card is free, easy, and offers unlimited potential. This September, visit your local library, sign up for a card, and unlock the many resources waiting for you. It’s one small step that opens the door to endless possibilities.

More than 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. For Dr. Raminder Parihar, neurologist and principal investigator at The Cognitive and Research Center of New Jersey (The CRCNJ), the impact of this illness is deeply personal. She has witnessed the emotional toll it takes on families and the helplessness that comes with watching a loved one decline.

Dr. Raminder Parihar

At The CRCNJ, Dr. Parihar leads clinical trials aimed at advancing treatments for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Conditions once considered rare, she notes, are becoming increasingly common, making dedicated research more critical than ever. Despite the growing prevalence of cognitive disorders, brain health is often overlooked, especially among adults over 55. “We offer a no-cost memory screening as a first step,” Dr. Parihar explains. “It helps us determine whether someone may be developing early issues in memory or cognitive thinking that could potentially lead to Alzheimer’s. Based on those results, they may qualify for one of our clinical trials.”

Sculpt, De-Puff and Glow: The Tox® Comes to Livingston

What if a wellness treatment could help de-puff your face, define your waistline and leave you looking more sculpted — without needles, surgery or a medical procedure? That is the idea behind The Tox® Livingston, a new studio at Livingston Town Center offering a proprietary approach that brings beauty and wellness together through lymphatic support, natural detoxification and body and facial sculpting. Unlike traditional lymphatic drainage, which many people encounter following surgery or through a medical referral, The Tox® is designed as an elective part of a beauty and wellness routine. Its signature technique uses intentional hands-on movements and specialized tools to encourage the body’s natural lymphatic flow while contouring targeted areas.

Beautiful

The lymphatic system helps move excess fluid, waste and toxins through the body but, unlike the circulatory system, has no central pump. When lymphatic flow slows or fluid becomes trapped, it can contribute to puffiness, bloating and water retention. Muscle movement and breathing help keep lymph moving, while external stimulation can further encourage that flow. The Tox Technique® is designed to help move fluid along its natural pathways, supporting detoxification, circulation, immune function and overall vitality. Signature services include the 60-minute Master Tox body-sculpting treatment, a 45-minute Sculpting Facial and a Pregnancy Master Tox. Treatments can address facial puffiness and areas including the waist, abdomen and love handles that clients would like to appear more contoured, sculpted or defined.

You Deserve a Treatment That Helps You Get Out of Pain Faster

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), the most recent gamechanging treatment to enter the physical therapy industry, has elevated the recovery experience. Not only does shockwave therapy help individuals resolve pain quickly, but its tissue regeneration and repair benefits also help heal injuries faster. It successfully treats injuries and pain in the muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, spine, nerve, scar tissue, soft tissue adhesions, pelvic floor, calcifications, arthritic spurs, and bunions, and more.

techniques, protocols, and applicator heads that maximize its benefit. We pair ESWT with our skilled practitioners’ ability to identify and treat all affected body tissues to achieve the most optimal tissue regeneration and recovery. We don’t just treat pain points; we treat the entire affected region with varying settings that address the tissue type at and around the injury. The whole treatment is personalized to the client’s body, injury, and sensation tolerance.

ESWT uses sound waves to break apart and disrupt painful soft tissue dysfunction and calcifications in the body’s tissues and joints, while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.

Our effective uses of this treatment span from acute injury (as soon as the same day) to old or chronic injuries, whether the treatment goals are to break up tissue dysfunction or simply help speed up recovery.

At Well in Montclair, we have been researching and utilizing shockwave therapy for 8 years, mastering the

iStrive Helps

Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum Keep Growing BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN

For high-functioning young adults on the autism spectrum, the years after high school can be especially challenging. Many support systems end at 18 or 21, with these individuals “falling off the cliff” after leaving traditional school-based services. Families are often left searching for meaningful opportunities that can help their loved ones build independence, confidence, and connection. iStrive, run by ACAP (the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis), based in Livingston, provides support for individuals navigating adulthood. Through iStrive, participants continue developing social relationships, emotional well-being, independence, and career readiness. Director Patricia Bratt, PhD, says ACAP began developing iStrive after consulting with families and gaining a deeper understanding of what individuals on the spectrum need most. “We decided we would set up a program that involved the families and the young adults to address this underserved population,” states Dr. Bratt. “Parents are the best resource for knowing what their kids need.” Today, iStrive meets on Saturdays from 9:30am to 1:30pm at ACAP’s Livingston facility. Participants range in age from 18 to 35. Sessions include workshops, conversations, activities, and collaborative projects designed to help members advocate for themselves, work with others, build teamwork skills, and think about their futures. Dr. Bratt says, “Many participants struggle with anxiety, particularly in social situations, and iStrive helps them build confidence and communication skills in a supportive environment.” The program encourages collaboration and self-advocacy, allowing participants to have a voice in activities and experiences rather than having decisions made entirely for them. Dr. Bratt feels that many people hold outdated stereotypes about individuals on the spectrum and underestimate how much they can contribute. The initiative is rooted in the belief that individuals on the spectrum continue to grow, even if that growth occurs at a different pace than their neurotypical peers. “Many participants go on to jobs, graduate school, and more independent futures as they continue building confidence, communication, and interpersonal skills through the program.” Dr. Bratt expresses. Rather than limiting participants through stereotypes, iStrive helps them strengthen skills, relationships, and their sense of agency as they move toward adulthood.

A Mind to Change

How one career change helped build a lasting community resource for understanding human behavior and helping people grow. Today, it has evolved into a vibrant learning community serving students, professionals, and community members both locally and around the world. Students come to ACAP from remarkably diverse backgrounds. Many are experienced professionals in fields such as medicine, education, business, law, engineering, and the sciences who are seeking a new direction, deeper professional development, or a richer understanding of human relationships and emotional life. Long before remote learning became commonplace, ACAP was pioneering interactive distance education. Today, participants can attend classes and workshops either onsite or live online, creating a learning community that extends far beyond New Jersey while maintaining the personal connection of a small institution.

Vicki Semel, PsyD Executive Director, ACAP

“I was a political scientist teaching at Rutgers when I realized something had shifted,” recalls Dr. Vicki Semel. “Instead of trying to change the world in a global way, I wanted to help people change one life at a time.”

ACAP’s educational offerings include psychoanalytic training programs, continuing education workshops, and its affiliation with BGSP-NJ, a branch campus of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis offering a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Beyond education, ACAP serves the community through the North Jersey Consultation Center, which provides mental health services, and through iStrive, a unique program supporting young adults on the autism spectrum as they build confidence, relationships, independence, and life skills. One of ACAP’s most popular community offerings is its free monthly Brown Bag Lunch series, bringing together clinicians, educators, students, and community members for lively discussions on topics related to emotional health, relationships, and personal growth. As Dr. Semel reflects on ACAP’s evolution, she smiles. “We’ve always been about helping people grow—whether that’s a student beginning a new career, a professional expanding their skills, or someone seeking support during a difficult time. What makes ACAP special is the sense of community. People come here to learn, but they stay because they feel connected.”

That realization led her back to school to become a psychologist and psychoanalyst. It also helped launch what would become ACAP— the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis—now a thriving educational and mental health resource based in Livingston. More than 40 years ago, ACAP began in a single classroom in Morristown, founded by a small group of educators and clinicians who shared a passion

As temperatures cool and leaves change, many people welcome the beauty and comfort of fall. But for those with seasonal allergies, autumn can also bring sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and a runny nose. These symptoms aren’t necessarily signs that summer allergies are lingering. Fall has its own common triggers. Ragweed is one of the biggest culprits. This flowering plant releases pollen from late summer into the fall, and even small amounts can trigger significant symptoms in sensitive individuals. Because pollen can travel through the air, it may affect people even if ragweed isn’t growing close to home. Mold is another common fall allergen. Fallen leaves create an ideal environment for mold to grow, particularly when they become damp. Raking leaves or spending time in piles of wet leaves can stir mold spores into the air, potentially causing symptoms. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help reduce exposure. Keep windows closed on days when pollen counts are high, particularly in the morning. After spending time outdoors, change clothes and shower to remove pollen from your skin and hair. Wash bedding regularly and vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture to help minimize allergens indoors.

Beautiful Smiles Created Here!!

At Livingston Dental Group, you are more than just a patient… you’re family. When working outdoors, consider wearing a mask designed to filter particles, along with sunglasses to help protect your eyes. If you rake leaves, wearing gloves and avoiding prolonged contact with damp leaf piles may also help. If allergy symptoms are persistent, severe, or interfering with sleep and daily activities, talk with a healthcare professional to identify specific triggers and recommend appropriate treatments. With a little preparation, fall allergies don’t have to keep you from enjoying everything that makes the season special—from crisp morning walks to colorful foliage and cozy afternoons outdoors.

parent watches from across the room with a smile that says they know this moment matters.

Walk into Cedar Bean’s Coffee Joint in Cedar Grove, and, before long, you notice something: people don’t seem to be in much of a hurry to leave.

But what keeps people coming back is harder to pour into a cup. It’s the feeling that, for an hour or two, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.

DIAMOND MINDS

The Simple Things BY BARRY FARBER

I think we sometimes forget the simple things in life. I was having breakfast with a mentor of mine who told me that when he meets with people, he pays close attention to whether they look him in the eye. When someone constantly looks away, he has a difficult time trusting them. He always emphasized how important it is to have eye contact and look someone straight in the eye.

And that goes for friends and family, too. Those are the relationships we can sometimes take for granted. When someone is talking to you, be present. Put your phone down. Look at them. Listen. Let them know that what they’re saying is important.

Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it?

And here’s something else we sometimes forget to focus on:

But you would be amazed at how many people don’t do it.

Take care of your body.

Yes, I do believe the eyes are windows to the soul. You can learn a lot about someone simply by listening and making eye contact. Sometimes you can learn more from what someone doesn’t say than from what they do say.

Walk more. Move. Stretch. Eat real food. Sleep well. Breathe deeply.

Which brings me to another simple act that can make everyone’s life better:

When you can achieve a state of balance and homeostasis, everything else becomes easier to deal with. You have more stable energy, greater resistance to stress, better sleep, improved mental clarity and a greater ability to handle whatever life throws your way.

Talk less. Listen more.

Remember, health is wealth.

And that’s not always easy.

Make time for quiet during the day, whether it’s walking in nature, meditating, or simply sitting without your phone. It allows your mind to clear, reset and come back refreshed.

I used to get so excited about projects, ideas, or ways I could help someone that I would end up doing most of the talking in a meeting. Today, if I’m preparing for a business meeting, I’ll do my research beforehand, but when I sit down with someone, I let them talk. I want to understand what’s important to them, what challenges they’re facing and whether what I do can actually help them. Sometimes the best thing you can do in a meeting is stop selling and start listening.

Laugh often. Appreciate what you have. Keep your word. Find work you’re passionate about. And something that always comes back to you in spades:

Barry Farber

Leave the world—and the people you meet—better than you found them. Maybe that’s what a well-lived life really comes down to. Not constantly searching for something bigger, better or more complicated, but doing the simple things consistently and doing them well. Look someone in the eye. Listen. Take care of yourself. Be grateful. Be present. Help someone. And don’t forget to enjoy the ride. As Groucho Marx said: “Yesterday is gone… Tomorrow isn’t here yet. I have just one day—today… I can choose how I shall be! And I choose to be happy!!!” And Doris Day said it beautifully: “Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty.” The simple things aren’t always easy. But they are often the things that matter most. And remember, when you stick to the basics, you never have to go back to them.
