West Orange Eagle Scout’s Project Helps the Environment

iam Coleman, a dedicated Scout from Troop 6 in West Orange, recently completed his Eagle Scout project, which has a lasting impact on both wildlife and his community. Inspired by his love for nature, Liam partnered with the Essex County Environmental Center to build 26 bird boxes for bluebirds in need of new homes. These nesting boxes were strategically placed at local golf courses, providing a safe and stable environment for the birds, especially after tree cover was removed for safety and invasive species control.

Liam’s project required significant planning, from fundraising to organizing volunteer help. With support from family and friends, he raised $900 for materials and tools, then coordinated a team of volunteers to assemble the boxes. By completing this project, Liam demonstrated exceptional leadership and helped preserve local biodiversity. His work will continue to benefit the community for years to come, making a true environmental impact.

Custom Art with Heart in West Orange

ifteen-year-old Sanaya Mistry of Cedar Grove recently earned first place in the prestigious International Classical Music Competition at Carnegie Hall. A sophomore at Mount Saint Dominic Academy, Sanaya was one of 57 finalists from around the world, competing among musicians from 14 countries across six age categories. She impressed judges with her expressive and technically precise rendition of Bach’s Concerto No. 1 in A minor. A violinist since age 7, Sanaya has performed with the Southern California Youth Philharmonic, the NJ Youth Symphony, Caldwell University’s String Ensemble, and NYU SummerStrings Orchestra. She has been a student of violinist Nancie Lederer of West Caldwell for over 10 years. Reflecting on her win, Sanaya said, “Playing at Carnegie Hall was an honor.” One of her most memorable musical experiences was performing with the cellist Yo-Yo Ma at the New Jersey Symphony’s Centennial Concert, an opportunity she describes as “inspiring and unforgettable.”

Glen Ridge Residents’ Acorns Project Grows Hope from a Dream

aniela Vitali, of Glen Ridge, launched The Acorns Project in January 2025 to share a message of hope and resilience through beautifully designed, symbolic gifts. Inspired by a dream during a time of financial hardship, Daniela discovered the acorn’s meaning—hope, new beginnings, and growth—and turned that into a movement. The Acorns Project currently features three thoughtfully crafted products—the Mystique Box, a hand-painted real acorn in a wooden box engraved with an inspirational message; a paint kit for ages six and up; and mini gift boxes to pair with the painted acorns. Each item is designed to be a tactile, visual reminder to never stop believing in yourself. Daniela hand-paints every acorn and curates each piece with the care and experience of a seasoned designer. Livingston’s Comedy Duo with a Cultural Twist

group of student musicians from Newark Academy has formed Harmonies for Healing, a jazz band raising money and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. The band plays at local restaurants, bars, and senior care facilities—donating their earnings to the Parkinson’s Foundation through a dedicated fundraising page. Founded by Arjun Kapur from Livingston and Noah Tamiso from Madison, the group has grown to include about 15 members from Newark Academy and other nearby schools. Their performances not only support a meaningful cause— Arjun’s grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s—but also provide therapeutic benefits to elderly audiences. They rotate band members depending on the performance, and their gigs include venues like Halcyon in Montclair and multiple Sunrise Senior Living locations. Their goal is to raise $5,000, with more events planned, including an awareness fundraiser at school. rody Levine, a junior at Livingston High School with a passion for comedy, teamed up with his classmate Jack Klein for a unique performance at Livingston Chinese Culture Day. Having always wanted to try comedy, Brody saw the event as the perfect opportunity to showcase his skills. He and Jack created a hybrid comedy act, blending Chinese and English, inspired by their classroom lessons with teacher Xin Cai. Their performance, which included jokes about language struggles and cultural misunderstandings, earned laughs from a diverse audience. Jack, who has been studying Chinese since seventh grade, was excited to join Brody in this cultural exchange. While comedy is a hobby for both, Brody’s love for performing, honed through years of school musicals, shined through in his act. The duo’s successful performance has sparked Brody’s desire to continue comedy as a side gig, where he has already performed twice more. Follow @brodylevinecomedy on Instagram.

Bringing Bread and Kindness to Those in Need BY JACKIE SCHATELL

For over 15 years, Joe Murphy, 80, of Livingston has dedicated his mornings to helping those who need it most. Twice a week, Joe loads up his car with donated bread and desserts from local grocery stores—Kings and ShopRite—and drives into Newark, where he delivers the goods to St. John’s Food Kitchen, a lifeline for the homeless and hungry. His routine is humble but powerful. “The trunk’s full of bread, and the backseat’s filled with desserts,” he says. At St. John’s, volunteers set up tables outside for distribution. Even in the dead of winter, a line forms—people waiting patiently for bread, bagels, English muffins, or one of the cakes Joe brings. “They really look forward to it,” he adds. Joe’s path to volunteerism began after he retired from his longtime job as a carpenter at Seton Hall University. Inspired by his late friend Paul McDonough, who had been running food deliveries for years, Joe stepped in to continue the mission. “He kept waiting for me to retire so I could help him,” Joe says. “So, when I did, I started going too.”

Today, he’s part of a network of volunteers who collect and deliver food to multiple sites, including St. Ann’s, St. Luke’s, and St. John’s, helping to ensure that nothing goes to waste and that people in need are fed. Joe’s service doesn’t stop in Newark. Closer to home, he opens St. Philomena’s Church in Livingston each morning around 6:30am, assists with Mass, and handles small repairs around the parish—from kneelers to doors. “I just like helping out,” he says.

In between volunteer shifts, he enjoys working in his yard and spending time with his large family—four children and 11 grandchildren. Joe Murphy’s story is one of quiet consistency—no spotlight, no accolades, just a deep sense of duty and compassion. “I’ve made a lot of friends through it,” he says. “And I feel good knowing I’m doing something that helps.” In a world often hungry for kindness, Joe brings more than bread—he brings heart.

Building Community with Every Step Charity, Connection, and a Walk Through History

When it comes to building a better world, Risa Olinsky of Maplewood believes in walking the talk—literally. A former personal trainer and health coach with over 40 years of experience, she organizes walks that blend education, wellness, and charitable giving—proving that community impact can be as simple as lacing up your sneakers and stepping outside. “Walking is one of the simplest ways to improve your health, connect with others, and explore the world around you,” Risa says. Her nonprofit, FreeWalkers.org, is rooted in that belief. The organization was founded to advance the health and well-being of the public by educating, motivating, and challenging people to participate in walking—particularly longdistance walking—as a powerful tool for personal and community transformation. Through its free, inclusive events and robust information-sharing network, FreeWalkers encourages members to set meaningful goals, support pedestrianfriendly initiatives, and experience firsthand the physical and mental benefits of walking.

This spring and summer, Risa is once again leading the charge through FreeWalkers, which organizes about 50 walking events each year and attracts thousands of participants from across the region. Known for blending fitness, history, and civic engagement, FreeWalkers has become a movement powered by steps— See and sustained by purpose.

FreeWalker, Dr. Olivia Lewis Chang, along with Trustee Lindsay Tasher, will lead a relaxing 3–4-mile evening walk in early June through the scenic Historic Montrose neighborhood of South Orange. Titled “Stride for the Mind,” the walk highlights the mental health benefits of movement, fresh air, and community connection.

In early May, David Ascher, South Orange resident and FreeWalker Trustee, will lead the 9-mile All Oranges Historical Walk, taking participants on a signature journey through South Orange, Orange, East Orange, and West Orange— communities that were once part of a single township. More than just a walk, this event is a rich exploration of New Jersey’s diverse local history.

“These walks are more than exercise—they’re about awareness, wellness, history, and helping others,” says Risa. “I’m proud to be part of something that brings people together and lifts people up.”

Roses to Rock Gardens 25th Anniversary Tour

The annual tour of private area gardens is back celebrating many years of interesting, aspirational and labor-of love gardens in the greater Montclair area. Some gardens are quite grand and some more intimate but all provide a haven for the homeowners. Tourgoers will enjoy a range of horticultural styles and find their own personal inspiration. The garden locations are not revealed until the tour begins and the printed journal is the guide to the addresses and details on each garden. Each garden can be visited once during the Tour, pets and children under age 12 are not permitted. FreeWalker Historical Walks

David Ascher, South Orange resident and FreeWalker Trustee, will lead the 9-mile All Oranges Historical Walk, taking participants on a signature journey through South Orange, Orange, East Orange, and West Orange—communities that were once part of a single township. More than just a walk, this event is a rich exploration of New Jersey’s diverse local history. Highlights include the Old Stone House, dating back to around 1666 and believed to be the oldest standing building in the state; Seton Hall University, founded in 1856 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley; and Monte Irvin Orange Park, named for the legendary Negro League and MLB player. Walkers will also pass St. John’s Church, built in 1869 and designed by Jeremiah O’Rourke, the architect behind Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart; the Orange Public Library, a 1900 structure designed by the renowned firm McKim,

Empowering Women with COUNSEL and COMPASSION NCJW/ESSEX CENTER FOR WOMEN

At the Center for Women, clients can find a safe haven to help them get back on their feet after divorce, death, separation, disability, deployment, or similar life event. Backed in part by a grant from the state Department for Children and Families and the Division of Women, clients are assisted with a case manager, job readiness programs and resources. Currently located in Livingston, N.J., the CFW prides itself on its compassion - from helping women get back on track to just listening to what they have been through. In Ann Marie’s case, the shock of losing work, money, and self-confidence kept growing, but she didn’t know where to turn. “Sometimes just listening is what women in crisis need,” said Patty Kremen, Director of the NCJW/Essex Center for Women. “They are still processing what has happened and don’t know where to start. That’s where we come in.” Programs available include career counseling, resume writing and job interview skills, computer classes, resources for job certification training programs, hard and soft skills workshops, access to recruitment opportunities, health and wellness workshops, family law consultations, and more. Services are offered virtually and in person, allowing women to access resources when and how they need them. CFW and its programs are available free of charge to women of any age, race, or religion throughout New Jersey who are dealing with financial challenges due to hardship in their lives.

Ann Marie S. works in production catering and craft service, but when COVID hit, her business began to suffer. The pandemic forced her work to slow, leaving her feeling lost and alone, looking for purpose. That’s when she found the Center for Women (CFW) at the National Council of Jewish Women/Essex County Section, offering holistic career and other support services to women who must enter or re-enter the workforce to provide for themselves and their families.

Ann Marie, 63, says the Center for Women allowed her to “grow again” while also protecting her confidentiality. She attended every course and program she could, looking forward to filling her weeks with new ideas, a sense of community, and applying what she learned to her day-to-day life. “The Center for Women has helped me build myself back up,” she said. “I’m using these skills and what I have learned to pick up where I left off and continue moving forward.” “Your dignity is preserved, you never feel less than, and it’s a safe place to be yourself,” she said. “I encourage women who might be afraid to take that next step to know that there is no need to feel scared or intimidated about joining this program. We are in this together.”

She remembers being greeted with the warmest welcome from women who understood her needs and simply listened. The staff, with dedicated social workers and career counselors, allowed Ann Marie to find her way through a series of free programs and guidance. “The first online meeting I attended, I felt a sense of comfort and sisterhood from women I didn’t even know,” the mother of two said. “I realized how much brings us together rather than divides us.”

Universities Are Anchors of Community Progress — Let’s Act Like It

I’ve thought a great deal about what it means to be a public-serving university. While institutions like Montclair State University receive public funding and serve as accessible places of higher learning, our role cannot—and should not—stop there. Public institutions have an obligation to promote the public good in the communities we serve. Universities are anchors: rooted in our communities, shaped by them and committed to their long-term wellbeing. As President of New Jersey’s second-largest public university, I see every day how powerful we can be when embracing this role.

At a time when the value of our entire sector is being dismissed if not disparaged, this point cannot be overemphasized. Whether it is biology professors engaging in environmental stewardship amid growing concerns over pollution and the changing planet, business and social work students providing much-needed job assistance and tax-filing support services or professional development partnerships with local hospitals, the modern university is a force multiplier for progress. And this isn’t unique to Montclair. Across the country, institutions like ours are stepping up.

As the temperature rises, outdoor adventures become irresistible. However, with the allure of nature comes the lurking danger of poison ivy. This common plant causes an itchy, uncomfortable rash in many people due to an oil called urushiol found on its leaves, stems, and roots. Understanding how to manage the risks associated with this pesky plant will help you enjoy the great outdoors without fear. If you come into contact with poison ivy, act quickly. Wash the affected area with soap and cool water as soon as possible—ideally within 30 minutes — to help remove the oil. Avoid scrubbing hard, as this can irritate your skin further. To prepare, I revisited a project I led years ago—a 26city tour with Entrepreneur Magazine and State Farm called “Selling in Tough Times.” What struck me most was how little the fundamentals have changed.
