Ariella Cianni Ariella Cianni, one of the talented stylists at Shag86 of Little Falls, recalls that even from the very first day of work in May of 2004 as an assistant at the salon—the first at which she had ever worked—she was eager to be “the best of everything.” Today, she clearly has achieved that goal, honing her skills over the years side-by-side with the best stylists in the field in cutting, color, styling and more. During her career, she has trained with professionals at industry leaders such as Goldwell, Wella, Arrojo, Redken, Paul Mitchell and many others. “I still continue my education to this day,” she says, “and look forward to learning new things every time I go for training.” Once, when asked what she would be if she had the opportunity to change her career, she quickly responded, “I would never take that opportunity, because I love what I do so much, it would sadden me if I didn’t have this work in my life anymore.” Summing up, she says, “it’s the best feeling, knowing that my talent can change the way clients feel about themselves and having them feel their very best when they leave my chair.”

Serving a Vulnerable Community The Apostles’ House Offers Its Clients Food, Shelter and Life Skills By Deborah Schapiro

R

eligious institutions are traditionally concerned primarily with matters of the soul. Several decades ago, however, five Newark-area Episcopal churches recognized that the growing number of hungry and homeless people required physical as well as spiritual nourishment. They got together and in 1982 established The Apostles’ House, a comprehensive social-services organization. According to Emergency Shelter Manager Victoria Griffith, “Our mission is to help our residents achieve self-sufficiency. While they are staying in our shelter, they are also attending classes in financial literacy, job readiness, mental wellness, anger management and more.” The typical stay in the shelter is three to six months. Griffith says, “We work with landlords and management companies to find our residents more permanent housing. Obviously, they need to have a job first,

kitchens and bathrooms, where husbands, wives and children stay together. Griffith notes that transitional housing program serves a different population from the shelters.

so they need to spend some time with us getting back on their feet.”

Not all of The Apostles’ House clients are homeless, but all are in need. Griffith estimates that the food pantry serves over 300 clients each month; the food is donated by individuals as well as area supermarkets and other companies. She adds that the clothing pantry serves roughly 100 people each month.

The Apostles’ House shelter is for women and children only (boys can stay until they are 13). Staff members do activities with pre-school age children while their mothers are attending classes.

Griffith concludes, “The Apostles’ House is much more than a place to sleep. Our clients come to us broken and beaten down, and we help them build themselves back up.”

In addition to its shelter, The Apostles’ House offers transitional housing. These are individual apartments with their own

Mary Ellen Clyne

PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AT CLARA MAASS MEDICAL CENTER

Climbs From Nurse to President Spring 2018

M

ary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer at Clara Maass Medical Center—one of approximately 138 nurse/CEOs in the United States—did not set out to become a hospital administrator. Rather, after interning and then working as a nursing assistant at a nursing home, she decided to enter the nursing field. Reflecting on the decision today, Dr. Clyne notes wryly that as a young teenager she “didn’t realize the intensity of the course curriculum for nursing which was heavily based in sciences.”

Never one to shy away from a challenge, however, Dr. Clyne graduated with a Diploma in Nursing from Muhlenberg Hospital School of Nursing in Plainfield (now JFK Muhlenberg Snyder Schools), where she was honored with an Award for Greatest Potential for Future Growth. Her first job was at Overlook Medical Center, where she developed a mantra that serves her to this day: “Be dependable, reliable and accountable at all levels.” Throughout her career, Dr. Clyne has been fortunate to have been guided by several mentors. She is very grateful that “people took chances on her, and she never let anyone down.” At every step in her nursing career, she “leaned in.” Gratefully accepting special projects, she was promoted and received specialized training in areas such as process improvement. Dr. Clyne points to her nursing background for her ability to be a quick learner and to understand customer service and patient safety in addition to knowing regulations. Above all, she believes in relationships. She humbly credits the phenomenal team of professionals that she is honored to work with and applauds them for their commitment and dedication to making a difference in the lives of those they serve.

One major perk in nursing, Dr. Clyne notes, is the tuition reimbursement offered by many medical centers. She happily took advantage of this program to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration and, ultimately, her Ph.D., all from Seton Hall University. While she was required to apply herself intellectually to these pursuits, the program took away the financial worry. On the home front, Dr. Clyne will celebrate her thirtieth wedding anniversary in May. Her husband is a retired police captain, and they have three children. Notably, all three have chosen to follow in their parents’ footsteps, as both sons are police officers and her daughter is studying to go into hospital administration. With her demanding role, she notes that she “is proud of her children and made sacrifices for them” in order to attain a positive work/life balance. In sum, Dr. Clyne notes, “My journey has been an incredible ride and wouldn’t change anything. I am thankful to Barry Ostrowsky and Thomas Biga for the opportunity to serve in the RWJBarnabas Health System.”

RWJBarnabas Health is the most comprehensive health care system in New Jersey and among the state’s largest private employers. The system is comprised of 11 acute care hospitals (including five teaching hospitals and an academic medical center), three children’s hospitals, a pediatric rehabilitation hospital and its network of outpatient centers, a free-standing behavioral health center and statewide network, trauma centers, a satellite emergency department, ambulatory care centers, comprehensive hospice and homecare programs, medical groups, two accountable care organizations (ACOs), multiple-site radiology services and pharmacy services. The system includes 33,000 employees, 9,000 doctors, and trains 1,000 medical students and interns annually. RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers University have announced plans to partner and create the state’s largest academic health care system, dedicated to providing high quality patient care, leading edge research, and world-class health and medical education that will transform and advance health care in New Jersey. RWJBH is the official health care provider of the New Jersey Devils, Rutgers University Athletics, Seton Hall University Athletics, Princeton University Athletics and the Somerset Patriots.

ost people don’t rush to make an appointment to visit the dentist. In fact, many patients try to avoid it for as long as possible due to fear and anxiety. Although it is recommended that everyone visit the dentist regularly, there are certain warning signs that indicate you should pick up the phone and make an appointment.

Do certain diseases put you at greater risk for dental problems? The mouth is the gateway to the body and many systemic diseases show signs or symptoms through your oral health. Are you one of the 29 million people who have diabetes? People with diabetes have a greater risk for gum disease, which left untreated can impact your blood sugar levels. Diabetics are also more prone to experience dry mouth which puts them at greater risk of developing cavities.

Is osteoporosis and dental health related? Osteoporosis, or low bone density, is another condition that affects nearly 40 million Americans. Before starting treatment for osteoporosis it is important to see your dentist so they can make sure your mouth is healthy. Procedures that affect the bone, such as having a tooth extracted, have increased risks and complications once you’ve started treatment.

Sensitive teeth have many possible causes and it’s important to have them evaluated by a dentist. It may be a sign of gum disease, a cavity, or your tooth root could be exposed because of receding gums. There are many different options for treating sensitivity but finding out the cause is step one.

teeth it is the sign of disease activity and if it is left untreated it can lead to tooth loss. It has even been shown that periodontal (gum) inflammation is associated with increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

What are the hidden dangers of not going to the dentist?

Do you ever wake up with headaches or sore muscles in your jaw?

A common misconception is that since nothing is bothering you everything is healthy. A lot of times cavities will be painless and once they start bothering you, the treatment is no longer so simple. Usually the longer you wait to go see your dentist the harder it is for us to fix the problem. Even if your gums don’t bother you, if you notice bleeding when you are cleaning your

Don’t just take some Advil and forget about it, this can be a sign of a problem with your TMJ, which are the joints and muscles that help you open and close your mouth. This may be a sign that you are clenching and grinding your teeth at night, which left untreated can cause damage to the teeth themselves.

he Legislature finds and declares that domestic violence is a serious crime against society; that there are thousands of persons in this State who are regularly beaten, tortured and in some cases even killed by their spouses or cohabitants.” Thus opens the first provision of the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act of 1991, initially enacted by the New Jersey Legislature in April 1982 and revised, at times substantially, since then. The Domestic Violence Act was created to protect some of the most vulnerable segments of society. However, domestic violence can appear in all shapes and sizes. It was the intention of the Legislature “to assure the victims of domestic violence the maximum protection from abuse the law can provide.” This includes 24/7/365 access to the police, the courts and the Halls of Justice. Pursuant to the Statute, “when a person claims to be a victim of domestic violence, and where a law enforcement officer responding to the incident finds probable cause to believe that domestic violence has occurred, the law enforcement officer shall arrest the person” who is alleged be the perpetrator. The operative word used in the statute is “shall,” it is not “may” or “might.” Therefore, the imposition of any improper or undue interference against a victim seeking the protection of the police or judicial system could be construed as interfering with the rights of the victim and improperly attempting to influence those charged by the Legislature to protect the most vulnerable. With the above definition and backdrop in mind, domestic violence manifests itself in many ways, particularly in the field of family law, such as to pressure the often “weaker” spouse or household member to capitulate to their terms or be subject to “consequences.” For example, a spouse threating another spouse in the context of divorce. It could be as simple—or as serious—as one spouse being physically violent with the other, following them around town, interfering with their employment, or assaulting them.

The entry of a Final Restraining Order has grave consequences. A lawyer can lose their license to practice law, a doctor can lose his medical license, and members of law enforcement can lose their ability to carry a weapon. Any person found guilty of committing an act of domestic violence is fingerprinted and placed in a central database, where their name can be located by law enforcement. Further, and very relevant in today’s political climate, a charge of domestic violence has very serious immigration consequences because it is a ground for removal. The Immigration and Nationality Act specifically says that any foreign national, i.e. anyone except a U.S. citizen, who is convicted or pleads guilty to a crime of domestic violence, can be removed. Even if the aggressor has a green card, if that person has been here less than 7 years, they will be removed back to their native country. If someone is here illegally (or has overstayed their visa), his or her removal is almost guaranteed. These ramifications are not always at the forefront of the mind of the victim when seeking the protection of the Courts. When faced with severe consequences, it is no surprise that many of the individuals charged with an act of domestic violence seek to resolve the issue amicably by way of a Consent Order or Civil Restraints. While the victim has to consent to the dismissal of the TRO, the decision often comes with the reality of living with the consequences of not agreeing to do so. Moreover, the cycle of violence, whether physical or psychological, often results in the victim having a sense of remorse, or second-guessing their decision to seek protection out of fear for their physical safety or financial well-being if the aggressor is to lose their job or be deported. Spring/Summer Hair Trends: An Interview with Ariella Cianni By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

S

hag86 in Little Falls creates and maintains magnificent manes. Ariella Cianni, a top stylist at Shag86, discusses spring and summer hair trends below. What are the latest trends in hairstyles for the spring/summer season? Hair is big and bouncy for the summer. Unlike the big hair of the ‘80s, hair is manageable, glossy, and healthy. Wet curls are in style. This hair look is air dried or achieved with a diffuser. The ends of the hair are tousled and not stick straight. Another cool trend is hair accessories. Scrunchies are back, along with head scarfs and barrettes. Scrunchies adorn loose, untidy braids and ponytails. Fringes are long falling below the eyebrows.

What are the latest trends in color? Dirty blonde hair is the latest look. Unlike the platinum blonde of last year, this season’s hair is a warmer shade of blonde. Golden shades with warmer tones all over is the new platinum. Balayage, where the color is swept into the hair using a special brush instead of foil highlights, is trendy and gives a natural and modern look. It allows hair to have depth and still have a sunkissed look. This technique can be used with all shades of colors and tones. Metallic hair shades are popular now, too. Silver, shiny hair replaces the previous, muted gray hair.

Which hairstyles are most versatile for the busy woman this summer?

Ariella Cianni Shag86

86 Main Street, Little Falls • 973-837-0086 www.shag86.com

Hair resting around the collarbone is a good length for women of all ages. Loose and textured is an easy style to maintain. Be aware of the summer humidity and go for an easy style that looks natural but styled.

Which hair trends are likely to continue beyond the summer season? A trend I see going beyond spring and summer would be balayage. Balayage is a color technique that has been around for decades. It just keeps reinventing itself with new techniques and placements. Spring 2018
