LIVINGSTON NEIGHBORS

Do Help Neighbors

By Cynthia Burns

D

ivorce, illness, job loss–all of these things can impact a family and ultimately a community. No town is immune,” says Stacey Rubinstein, co-founder and president of Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors (LNHN). The nonprofit, established in 2016, is committed to supporting Livingston residents struggling with unexpected hardships by providing short-term financial assistance and in-kind support. “Since its inception, LNHN has helped 31 families–assistance has included meals, fresh produce, non-perishables, clothing, school supplies and grocery store gift cards,” notes Rubinstein. LNHN manages the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW) pantry at Town Hall. An emergency fund allows the organization to make monetary gifts to families in crisis. Through the fund, $20,000 has been granted to help 13 families with immediate needs including rent or utility bills. Rubinstein says that nearly 100 percent of donations are used to serve those in need. To ensure confidentiality and confirm need, LNHN partners with Kacie Schmidt, LCSW, Livingston’s social worker, to screen families and assess requests to ensure support is used appropriately. In addition, when financial support is given, it is directed to the utility company or landlord, not the individual requiring assistance.

1

At this time, LNHN assists 26 children. With the school year upon us, LNHN challenged the community to donate twenty-five $25 gift cards for school supplies for middle and high school students, and this was recently accomplished. Rubinstein and nine other Livingston residents comprise the volunteer Board. “We are all actively involved. We work as a team.” The organization receives referrals from schools, temples, churches and the township social worker, and has strong support from community organizations. “Livingston has a strong commitment to philanthropy,” says Rubinstein. “We hope our work provides a sense of hope and even stronger feelings of goodwill in our already generous community.” LIVINGSTON NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS is always accepting food donations for the CHOW pantry and is always looking to build its emergency fund so it can be ready to respond when needed. For more information, e-mail LNHN07039@gmail.com, send a message via Facebook, or contact Kacie Schmidt at 973-535-7961, ext. 231. Donations may be made via Facebook or sent to LNHN c/o HCHY, P.O. Box 105, Livingston, NJ 07039.

Registration is being accepted for the inaugural LNHN Women’s Doubles Tennis Tournament. It will be held Tuesday, September 25 from 9am to 12:30pm at the Northland Recreation Center. Cost: $80 per doubles team; each team plays at least three matches. E-mail LNHN07039@gmail.com for registration link or if you have any questions/are in need of a partner.

I

n 1929, Supreme Security Systems, Inc. began as a “doorknocker”—a man who went door-to-door at night, ensuring doors to businesses were locked. Nearly a century later, the business founded by Sidney Bitton and still run by the third generation of his family has evolved into a highly sophisticated firm offering burglary, fire, home automation, closed-circuit TV, home environmental monitoring, and personal response systems to protect property and people. Yet that personal relationship is still vital. Supreme’s distinction is their service. Their team will respond to your call for a free consultation within hours. Their Monitoring Center in Union is manned 24/7/365. Should you need service, they will be there right away. Their technicians’ training is constantly updated. They will work with you until it’s right! Supreme now offers “Video Verification” services that sends notifications to your phone or device when an alarm is triggered, including real-time viewing of the event; thus decreasing false alarms. With V.V., police response time is 85 percent faster.

Highline Fashion Launches Dress Lounge

S

ince the closing of Gotham Boutique in 2016, residents of Millburn, Short Hills and surrounding areas have felt a void in boutique shopping destinations for special occasion and Bat Mitzvah dresses. But with the launch of “The Dress Lounge” at Highline Fashion, a chic apparel, accessory and gift boutique, owner Tammi Siedlecki is helping to serve this much needed niche. Betty Reisman (aka Bat Mitzvah Betty) has also joined the Highline Fashion team, bringing with her many years of experience in dress design.

Photography by Dan Epstein

The Dress Lounge at Highline Fashion is a destination where local followers can have a fun and easy shopping experience. It features special occasion dresses for girls and juniors, in a range of price points, semi to full customization and features well known brands as well as up and comers. The dress lounge has also recently integrated inventory from Dressed by Lori, a former Millburn destination boutique for women’s special occasion dresses, to round out their dressing capabilities.

“We are thrilled to now be able to outfit whole families of women for special occasions,” said Tammi. “It’s so exciting for us to expand our product categories to meet the needs of the surrounding communities and to keep business local.” The Dress Lounge is open during store hours. Appointments are suggested for consultations during as well as off store hours.

ith one photograph, you are transported to a distinct moment that is forever frozen in time. You instantly remember how it felt when your child would slowly fall asleep in your arms. You remember the sound of giggles and little feet pattering down the hallway. The seemingly mundane moments from years gone suddenly have new meaning. Portraits have the unique power to connect us to who we were, who we are and who we hope to become. They lead us to a connected life filled with purpose, discovery and joy.

These are the moments we live for. These are the moments we celebrate. Whether it’s an imminent birth, a pending retirement, or any day in between, every day there’s something to celebrate.

Dieci Lifestyle Spa

Getsa Makeover!

Photography by Dan Epstein

T

he talented staff at Dieci Lifestyle Spa is in the business of performing makeovers on its savvy clientele, and over the past year the facility itself has had a complete makeover of its own. Since early 2017, Dieci has undergone an extensive redesign process, including a complete renovation to the entryway, front desk checkout, retail space, makeup area, hair color/shampoo area, styling floor, waxing rooms, manicure/pedicure stations, and restrooms. In addition, the main hair color department and the office on the second floor have been renovated. With the space totaling 13,000 square feet, this has been no easy feat and quite an accomplishment! Noteworthy new design features in this fresh, open concept space are the jewelry-like crystal pendants suspended at check-in; two front desks that are back lit to create a warm, lounge-like feel; a fireplace wall of glisten mica with Chroma Therapy flame in the pedicure room; and restrooms with a gorgeous mosaic tile feature wall in a waterfall design. These new features keep luxury and beauty in mind along with comfort, movement, space, flow, and light. The next phase of the renovation will be the redesign of the Spa area, which is likely to begin this winter after the busy holiday season. Upgrades will include a luxurious new Ladies Lounge area, a Relaxation Room, a Couples Experience, and the introduction of Salt Therapy or Halotherapy. Dieci will also introduce new services and treatments at the Spa along with new, state of the art equipment and products. In addition to reinventing the appearance of the Salon and the Spa, owners Paul and Marie Gaglioti have launched their own app, which will allow their clients a new way to connect with them. Clients can have access to all details of their main location, their salon for men Dieci Uomo, and Dieci Colori Cosmetics. The easy-to-use app is free to download from the Apple/PlayStore. Review Dieci’s services, receive monthly promotions, post reviews, schedule appointments and buy gift cards! Another innovative service that is exclusive and only available at Dieci Lifestyle Spa at this time is Energy Code Mapping! Using the luxury System Professional hair care line, the stylists at Dieci can diagnose your hair profile with an ultrapersonalized hair care system that is unique to each client. For more details, please call for a consultation with one of the many stylists at Dieci Lifestyle Spa.

Keep Spinning Your Wheels WITH HELP FROM LIVINGSTON TIRE By Cynthia Burns

W

e’re looking for customers for life” is the slogan of Livingston Tire. Owner Mike Kirwan, a thirdgeneration family member in the business established in 1929, says he is fortunate to have a lot of long-term customers. Kirwan understands that customers’ time is valuable: “We offer same day service whenever possible.” Livingston Tire carries all major brands for cars and light trucks. Tread depth is the true test of whether a car needs new tires, not the number of miles logged. “Tread depth is checked when tires are rotated. We recommend doing that every 5,000 miles.” Kirwan explains the biggest reason car owners do not get maximum tire life is because they don’t rotate tires. “When you buy tires from us we offer free rotation for the life of the tires.”

Livingston Tire also does oil changes, wheel alignments, NJ state car inspections, installs brakes, and much more. It is the only AAA-approved repair facility in the area. Kirwan is also fortunate to have long-term technicians on staff. “Many have been with me for more than 15 years, some as long as 30,” he says. Collectively, they offer years of knowledge. “People can be overwhelmed by the choices of tires available. There can be more than 200 choices for the same size tire.” Their salesmen help customers make smart decisions based on the customer’s specific needs.

Mike Kirwan

“We are value-based and strive for what works best for customers,” says Kirwan.

Change Your Life with an Aura Reading By Jackie Schatell

A

re you feeling a little lost? Perhaps you are seeking a soulmate, wondering about a sick loved one, or your past, present or future? If so, it might be time to seek out a spiritual life coach like psychic Mrs. June, the owner of Aura Photography in Livingston, NJ. Mrs. June has been helping people find peace and answers through aura photography, tarot card reading, chakra balancing, numerology, astrology and more for over 20 years, with 15 of those years spent at her Livingston location. Mrs. June says that she loves helping people get back on track, find answers and improve their chakras. Right now, Mrs. June is offering an Aura Reading special for $45, which is a discount of $75, for new clients. Clients are invited to call

for an appointment and reference this article for the discount. Once a client arrives at Mrs. June’s office, they will have a photo taken of the energy field, or aura, that surrounds them. Mrs. June will then use the colors from the image to gather information about their emotional state, love life, career, health, chakras and more. Clients will learn about their current emotional states and chakras and Mrs. June will offer suggestions for improvement. “This process is great for sceptics,” says Mrs. June. “They can’t deny what they see in the photo as they are seeing what I see when they walk through my door.”

new program for students is now being offered at Estelle Finkel Center for Learning. The Academic Life Coaching Program is designed to address stress about grades, disorganization, lack of motivation, frustration in relationships, and more for students in their teens and college. “As students mature and take on more responsibilities, Academic Life Coaching supports their growth and helps develop habits that will make them feel successful and productive,” notes educational director Amanda Patrick. Through the program, students will be able to discover their own personal learning style and focus on core life coaching skills and concepts. Students will also learn how to take sustainable steps towards their goals. The final part of the program focuses on communication and leadership skills. Academic Life Coaching is delivered in ten individuals sessions, with students working one-on-one with a trained coach. Scheduled over three months, the sessions last up to 60 minutes each and can be either in-person, over the phone, or through video conference.

More Than Just a Congregation—a Family Temple Sholom Reveres and Celebrates Judaism By Janis Hashe

A

t Temple Sholom of West Essex, the goal is to “help our members find meaningful ways to integrate Judaism into their daily lives,” says Co-President Patti Mollo. “It’s about much more than just being in the building.” Programs designed to accomplish this include “Havdalah at Home,” challah baking classes and monthly Rosh Chodesh learning events. Mollo notes that Temple Sholom also offers free Hebrew school for members’ children. “This is a gift we offer our members. The children get a sense of being part of a worldwide Jewish community.” New members to the 700+ persons Reform congregation receive a welcome package of challah, honey and candy Torahs, a phone call from the rabbi and religious school director, says Mollo. The first Friday of each month is the Young Family Service. On this September 7, the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah, new members are invited to participate in the changing of the Torah mantles. A religious school open house will take place Sunday, September 23 starting at 10am.

A “Plan” for Any Future Plan Architecture Handles Both Residential & Commercial Projects By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

D

an D’Agostino likes to describe Plan Architecture, the firm he established in early 2014, as “fairly diverse,” designing both residential and commercial buildings. The 10-member firm (eight architects, an interior decorator and an administrator) is also state-of-the-art, using the latest computer software to create 3-D architectural models. At the same time, says D’Agostino, “We’re very relatable. When we work with our clients, we’re helping them think critically about what they need and what they want, which are not always the same thing.” He explains the Plan process: “The first time we meet with a residential client is generally a walk-through in their home, where we can really see what they want to do and ask relevant questions. Assuming the client decides that we are a good fit, we then look at local zoning codes for guidelines. Back at our office, we create a construction document, which turns the ideas into actual drawings.” The completion of the construction document does not mean the end of the firm’s involvement. D’Agostino notes, “We work fairly regularly with around 30 contractors who do the actual building of

Dan D’Agostino the project.” The project may be as large as a 260-unit apartment complex comprising four buildings and a parking structure, or as small as an addition to a front porch. Whatever the size or type, D’Agostino says, “We work at the client’s pace; we never want them to feel rushed.”

More Than 137 Years of Serving the Jewish Community with Care and Compassion By Martta Kelly, photo by Dan Epstein

B

ernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston is the culmination of a proud and rich history of serving the Jewish community in northern New Jersey. With more than 137 years of experience, the formation of the Chapel dates back to the late 1800s, when Elias Bernheim founded E. Bernheim and Sons Memorial Chapel on Clay Street in Newark. The business has had several moves and mergers since then but the premise is still the same–to provide the best possible service to an ever-changing and growing community. Louis Urban, managing director of Bernheim Apter Kreitzman, works out of the Livingston facility at 68 Old Short Hills Road that was built in 2001. In business since 1981, he considers his profession his true calling. “I love helping people, offering them guidance and comfort during a difficult time,” he says. “I am also fortunate to work with a caring and compassionate staff, some of whom I have known for more than 20 years.” As a member of Dignity Memorial, North America’s largest provider of funeral, cremation, and cemetery services, Bernheim Apter Kreitzman is committed to offering services that go above and beyond. These services include special memorial services for

Louis J. Urban - Licensed Manager military veterans and their families; funeral pre-arrangement plans that remove guesswork and take the burden off of the surviving family; a 24-hour help line for anyone with questions about any aspect of the process; and travel assistance for out-of-town mourners. Working in the bereavement business is truly a labor of love, Urban says, as you are pretty much always on call. “You always have to be prepared. Days, nights, weekends, holidays, this is not a business with ‘normal’ hours.”

t’s not only the wide range of physical therapy services Optimum Recovery Rehab (ORR) offers, ranging from orthopedic injury rehab, geriatric rehab, pediatric therapy and much more, that patients appreciate, says founder Dr. Tessa Almeda. “It’s the personalized level of care,” she says. “Each patient is given a careful, individualized evaluation, we have private treatment rooms, and that one-on-one philosophy continues throughout their treatment.” Dr. Tessa Myra Dr. Almeda strongly believes Cantado Almeda patients achieve better functional outcomes from their therapies because of this approach. ORR uses electronic medical records, eliminating much repetitive paperwork. Most insurances are accepted, and if someone wants to continue progress once insurance coverage ends, ORR’s “medical gym” is available for patients who want to build their personal exercise routine to augment their therapy. The gym, says Dr. Almeda, is staff supervised to ensure exercises are being performed properly and vital signs monitored, safely guiding recovery.

DENTAL IMPLANTS:

That Perfect Smile! By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

S

ince 1996, RoseAnn Giannella, DMD, has helped patients achieve that perfect smile. Specializing in both general and cosmetic dentistry for children and adults in Livingston, she discusses below the increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry, especially dental implants.

What are dental implants? Dental implants are permanent teeth made through a process of working with both an oral surgeon and a dentist. First, the oral surgeon extracts the original tooth and places RoseAnn Giannella, DMD a metal implant within the bone in the gum. The bone must grow around the implant–usually a gradual process that takes four to six months. Then the above-the-gum work begins in the dental office. I make an impression of the tooth and fit the What are the advantages of dental patient with the tooth. The result is strong, natural looking teeth that implants over dentures and bridges? do not need to be removed from the mouth. Comfort and permanency are major considerations. Many people do not wear dentures or bridges well. Often, dentures and bridges fit poorly and break. Further, dentures and bridges must be Are there important factors to consider removed from the mouth for cleaning and at bedtime.

before getting dental implants? Yes. There are different tests that the oral surgeon performs to make sure that the patient has enough bone to support the implants. Most people that need implants come to me first. They have poor, weak, or missing teeth and want to explore options. I may recommend dental implants for them and refer them to one of the oral surgeons with whom I work closely. The oral surgeon performs the necessary tests. If the patient is a good candidate for dental implants, the process begins. The surgeon, patient, and I form a partnership to ensure the desired outcomes.

In most cases, I recommend dental implants to patients as the appropriate cosmetic procedure. Dental implants last for many years. Occasionally, the teeth may need to be restored, but the procedure is a simple above-the-gum process for the fitting of the new tooth and is non-invasive with only measurements and impressions necessary to make a new tooth.

f you find yourself needing prescription eyeglasses, Ofer Steinberg has some advice: “Don’t run to the chain stores because you think they’re a better deal.” Steinberg speaks from experience; he is an optician himself and the owner of Block & Zuckerman Opticians in West Orange. Established in Newark in the early 1950s, Block & Zuckerman has been in its current location for over 30 years. According to Steinberg, the company’s longevity is due primarily to its customer service: “The individual attention that we give to every client from the moment that he or she walks in, sets us apart from other opticians.” This means working with a client to first find the best fitted and most flattering frame, and then determining the best lenses for optimal vision for their prescription. Steinberg says, “We can make lenses for different distances, and we now also have a special coating that blocks out harmful blue light from computer screens.” The technology is new, but the craftsmanship at Block & Zuckerman is not. Steinberg notes, “We do, and have always done, our own edging (cutting the lenses to fit inside the frames) instead of sending the work out to a separate lab.” The shop offers a wide range of designer frames, from Ray-Ban to the newer iGreen. According to Steinberg, “Customers love iGreen because the frames are very lightweight and easy to customize.”

Experience & Expertise at SACKS ORTHODONTICS By Tonya Johnson

D

r. Eric Sacks of Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston, NJ is one of the few Board Certified Orthodontic specialists in our area. Surprisingly, many of the other orthodontists around do not have this distinction. After four years of dental training and three years of orthodontic specialty training, Dr. Sacks worked as an associate in three different orthodontic offices, and a pediatric dental office as well. That valuable experience gave him the confidence to start his own office in Livingston almost a decade ago. Today, Sacks Orthodontics is open six days a week for the convenience of his patients who are “among the nicest people and families I’ve ever had the pleasure of treating.” With a team of 12 employees on his staff who have a common passion for their work, a strong focus on customer service, and an unyielding attention to detail, each member brings something different to the patient experience. Vast knowledge, a strong work ethic and being nice and caring are all pre-requisites for being part of the Sacks Orthodontics work family. Employees range from Registered Dental Assistants, who provide a supportive role in the clinical process, to administrative support staff, treatment coordinators, an office manager and even former patients who often ask to intern. “It’s all about the individual, not so much about any particular product or service. It’s not one size fits all. Each patient, personality, clinical presentation, and circumstance is unique and every situation is catered to what’s best for that individual,” said Dr. Sacks. As people are living longer, Sacks Orthodontics serves a growing adult population with patients even in their 70’s and 80’s who value their dentition and are seeking treatment for esthetic and/or dental health improvements. There’s a lot of misinformation out there.

Dr. Sacks recommends that people do their research and seek a practitioner that has the training, education, expertise, and experience to do the job to the highest standard possible. Dr. Sacks is one of the top Invisalign doctors in the world, having treated more than 3,000 cases with experience and expertise. With ever-changing technological advances in today’s market, continuing education is mandatory at Sacks Orthodontics. In order to stay current, employees attend meetings and seminars locally and across the country. Fall 2018

“While we pride ourselves on being cutting edge and technologically advanced,” he explained, “we only adopt technology that is evidence based to be proven effective, safe and worthwhile.”

A True Neighborhood Practice Dedicated to High-Quality Care By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

ssex-Morris Pediatrics, which has been caring for children and young adults for over 35 years and has been a part of Atlantic Medical Group since 2013, provides the specialized knowledge needed to keep children healthy. There are three boardcertified pediatricians on staff, plus a pediatric nurse practitioner, treating newborns to young adults up to the age of 23. According to Isabel Zuniga, the front-end representative, “We’ve been in practice for many years, most of our patients are third generation, and even employees bring their children here.” The practice can handle everything from routine immunizations, athletic exams, well-child visits, and allergies, to the more serious concussion diagnoses and management. For the latter, they use ImPact®Testing, which “is a computerized brain injury measurement tool for children and teens who have sustained a concussion. It will provide a baseline result that can be used to compare to post-injury results,” explained Wendy Ortiz, certified medical assistant. In addition to preventing and treating illnesses, the practice also offers ADHD evaluation and management as well as evaluations for learning disabilities. They also perform prenatal visits and provide advice and assistance with breastfeeding and much more.

When your child is ill, Essex-Morris Pediatrics guarantees same-day appointments. Evening and Saturday appointments are available, and they have a physician on call 24 hours a day. Walk-in visits are also welcome on certain days and times. Essex-Morris Pediatrics strives to meet every need of parents and their children. Zuniga also mentions the friendly office staff, the acceptance of most insurances, and the bilingual office (English and Spanish) as some of the reasons that make this practice stand out. Being a part of Atlantic Medical Group is also a huge asset. With a network of over 900 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants in over 300 locations in northern and central New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania, they cover a wide range of health care related services. Community-based providers are affiliated with a multitude of hospitals which include Morristown Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Hackettstown Medical Center and Chilton Medical Center.

estaurateur Vincent Leone is proud of both the delicious food and the attractive design of Mezza Mediterranean, his local Mediterranean-fusion eatery. He is possibly even more proud of its accessibility. Says Leone, “We are not just for expense account meals and big dates. We are accessible any day of the week and for customers at any price point.” Open since February, Mezza Mediterranean is Leone’s second restaurant; Mezza Westwood has been thriving in Bergen County for the past five years. Both restaurants are open for lunch and dinner; the menu features dishes from Israel, Morocco and Tunisia, and much more. Leone notes that he also offers Lebanese, Greek, Turkish, and even Italian and South African dishes: “We have the whole world on one menu.” The salads and hummus bowls are popular lunchtime offerings; vegetarians appreciate the variety of meatless options. “We get a lot of business from customers looking for a quick and healthy lunch.” The most popular dinnertime dishes are definitely not just vegetarian; Leone cites the branzino, lamb shanks and short ribs pappardelle as customer favorites. Desserts include seasonal sorbets and gelati, baklava, chocolate souffle and zeppole-like ricotta fritters, the latter three made in-house.

Come Home to Divina Ristorante Italian Cooking at Its Finest By Tonya Johnson, photo by Dan Epstein

ario Carlino started cooking in the kitchen with his mom and sister when he was 15 years old. Inspired by the two, he went on to attend culinary arts school in Salerno, Italy and worked hard for several years abroad before moving to the United States at the age of 23 to pursue the American dream. In 1994, the owner and head chef opened Divina Ristorante in Caldwell, and business has been booming for the past 24 years. With the help of 12 staff members, his wife– who works as the bookkeeper, and their college son–who pitches in part time when needed, the entire crew continues to strive for the excellent service that customers have grown accustomed to and keeps them coming back. “Our customers enjoy fresh quality ingredients, hot food with nice portions

and the price is right! Divina Ristorante is a family oriented place where everyone is always welcomed to come in and get a good meal,” Carlino said. Lasagna Alla Bolognese and Paccheri, a baked pasta dish filled with crabmeat and shrimp, top the list of favorite menu items to ask for. Weekly specials feature a rotation of meat, two different fish, and four types of pastas paired with vegetables and potatoes on the side. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Friday, 11:30am to 2:30pm for lunch and 4:30 to 9:30pm for dinner. Stop by on Sundays after 3pm for a taste of Italian Sunday Sauce made of pasta, baby meatballs, short ribs, beef and sausage. Divina Ristorante homemade cheesecakes are very light and always in season with raspberry in the spring, blueberry in the summer and pumpkin in the fall.

Ike’s Bagel Café: A TRUE Family Establishment By Susan Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

I

t all started with their grandfather, Ike Gorovy, who owned his own bagel shop in Brooklyn. Many years later, his grandsons, Jordan and Brett Vaccari, carried on his tradition by opening Ike’s Bagel Café in 2015 in Livingston, NJ. “Ike’s is different from the rest because we are focused on giving great customer service and great food. We use the best quality ingredients and everything is homemade. We take pride in our store and what we serve,” said Jordan. Their catering menu is extensive, and they have served as few as four and as many as 300. And it’s not just local; they have catered a party in Greenwood Lake, NY. For Yom Kippur, “We will be serving all the classic dishes with homemade cream cheese, bagels, whitefish salad, egg salad, tuna salad, etc. Ike’s will be offering some great packages to feed the entire family, all decorated and placed on a platter,” stated Jordan.

Greek & Traditional Fare with a Sweet Twist A Fusion of Old World Tradition and New World Innovation to Delight Your Palate.

F

ive years ago, local staple Golden Touch Diner got new owners, a facelift, a new menu and a new name–East Hanover Diner. Since then, the Karsos family, which has been in the diner business for over 40 years–with 20 of those years spent owning the Brookside Diner in Hanover–has been serving up delicious traditional diner fare that’s steeped in their Greek heritage. Descendants of Chios, Greece, brothers Mike, George and John Karsos and their families chose a blue and white theme for the eatery to honor the Greek flag. The curated menu includes gourmet salads, wraps, paninis and omelets and a wide variety of seafood and Greek dishes. It also includes many home-baked deserts including large cakes, pies, pastries, muffins, baklava and eight different types of cheesecake. The diner is open Sunday-Thursday from 6am to 1am and stays open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Fresh Fruit Flavors When it comes to fresh fruit, watermelon is a top pick in many households.

I

t’s available year-round and makes for a nutritious snack, but its great taste is the reason most people buy watermelon, according to research from the National Watermelon Promotion Board.

Mezza prepares authentic Mediterranean cuisine with a modern touch. As you walk into our new spacious and attractive dining space, the aroma of fresh spices with a hint of citrus greets you at the door. LUNCH: Everyday 11:30am–3pm DINNER: Sun-Thur 5-9pm, Fri & Sat: 5-10pm

Not only is watermelon a tasty snack by itself, it’s a great complement to other flavors, making it easy to create flavorful pairings. For a nutritious option, consider this Buddha bowl featuring watermelon, which contains higher levels of lycopene, an antioxidant, than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. Watermelon is also an excellent source of vitamin C, and it provides vitamin B6 and potassium. It’s the perfect sweet addition to balance the savory flavors of this traditional plant-based Buddha bowl. Citrusy Tahini Dressing: 3 tablespoons tahini

No Matter Which Way You Slice It, The Locals LOVE Master Pizza!

S

atisfying cravings for hot, cheesy pizza for almost 30 years, Master Pizza is a community staple for fresh, quality Italian takeout and delivery. Master Pizza is especially known for its gourmet pies—unique combinations of ingredients that sit atop pizza crust, tantalizing customers. “We create new pizzas often, like Upside Down pizza,” said MaryLee Castronovo, who owns Master Pizza with her husband Frank, who opened the restaurant in 1990. For instance, alongside classic staples like meat lover’s and white pizza, there’s the Las Vegas Pizza—mozzarella and cheddar, Gorgonzola, bacon and potatoes in a creamy Alfredo sauce. There are Chicken Francese, -Parmigiana and -Marsala pies; Seafood Pizza, with sautéed shrimp, scallops and clams in a light wine marinara sauce; Chicken Caesar Pizza, which has grilled chicken, romaine lettuce and Caesar dressing; and even an Italian Hot Dog Pizza, featuring a combination of hot dogs with potatoes, peppers and onions on a mozzarella baked pizza dough. The list goes on. “One of the things that makes us stand out is our quality ingredients. For instance, we use Grande cheese—the leader in the pizza industry—and all of our sandwiches are made with Boards Head cold cuts,” said Castronovo. Another standout, she says, is their efficient delivery service and convenient online ordering.

Frank Castronovo The restaurant has made it very easy to order your heart’s content, having launched their smartphone app about a year ago— Master Pizza & Italian Kitchen. “It allows people to order online at any one of our four locations,” said Castronovo. In addition to Livingston, Master Pizza is also in West Orange, Carlstadt and Union. Additionally, the restaurant keeps up with social media and frequently sends lunch specials, offers and coupons to their customers. Thanks to the support they’ve received from Fall 2018

the community, the restaurant is constantly contributing to local causes. “We’re always donating to local sports teams and schools,” said Castronovo. “We’re very involved in our local community in so many different ways. We really try to give back.”
