iStrive is a unique concept designed to meet social, occupational growth, emotional, and interpersonal needs of young adults, high-functioning on the autism spectrum. iStrive meets on Saturdays, September through June, 9:30am to 1:30pm. The day will be made up of several types of group modules, facilitated by iStrive staff. Participants whose tolerance for group interaction may become challenged, will also be able to work in one-on-one with our NJCC staff as requested.

iStrive Center Goals:

• Extend socialization and friendship skills

• Offer opportunities for weekend activities

• Create a collaborative community atmosphere where parents, members, and staff build the program

• Improve social, vocational, and emotional functioning

• Provide group activities and individual psychotherapy

• Develop avenues for parent networking and support

Often people are motivated to seek therapy for emotional pain, unresolved problems, distress in relationships, concerns about family members, or uncomfortable feelings and symptoms. Taking the first step can be difficult, but part of the therapist’s role is to assist you in becoming comfortable with the process. Just the action of contacting a therapist is an important step toward solving the problems interfering with your feelings of well-being.

Letter from the Mayor

HHello Livingston,

It has been 12 years that I have been on the Town Council, and my third term as mayor. For someone who grew up in Livingston and graduated from Livingston High School, it has been quite an honor.

The town government has achieved some important accomplishments over that time. In recent years, we have deployed more officers to the streets and equipped the Livingston Police Department with new technology, resulting in a 75% decrease in house break-ins and car thefts. We have also made remarkably innovative environmental improvements. Our municipal bond rating has been increased to Aa1, showing our residents that we have not only been fiscally responsible with their money but also helped create a future in which borrowing will be less expensive. We have purchased acres of open space to preserve them from development. We have almost completed the new filtration system for our water, with now more than 95% of the water coming PFAS-free. Through all of this, our township has retained its diverse, welcoming character that we all know and love.

When I travel around Livingston, I see people who grew up here now raising their own families. Residents who grew up elsewhere are often surprised by how many people move back. But when you know, you know.

While there will always be challenges for any community, Livingston is shining bright as we move ahead with plans to renovate the town pool and work hard to redevelop the Livingston Mall. As we celebrate our nation’s 250th year with proud flag columns on our Town Hall, we know that Livingston’s future will be one our families can be proud of, and that it will keep Livingston the place we keep coming home to.

All the best and Go Lancers!

Mayor Shawn Klein, MD

The Power of Yes: How Friendship Circle and LifeTown Are Changing Lives

More than two decades ago, Rabbi Zalman and Toba Grossbaum made a promise to families raising children with special needs: they would create a place where the answer would always be yes.

MAt the time, Toba was teaching special education and saw firsthand how isolating life could be for families navigating autism and other developmental differences. The couple was also deeply involved in Jewish educational programming throughout Essex County. When they learned that New Jersey had one of the highest concentrations of autism in the country and saw the impact of a Friendship Circle program started by friends in Michigan, they realized there was an opportunity to meet an important community need close to home.

They began with a simple idea. Teen volunteers would build friendships with children with special abilities through home visits, social programs, sports, and holiday activities, creating inclusive opportunities for families who often struggled to find them.

Since its founding in 2000, Friendship Circle has grown into a vibrant community network. More than 14,000 teen volunteers have participated over the years, with nearly 1,000 adult volunteers contributing their time annually. Many say the experience has shaped their lives, influencing careers in education, healthcare, and advocacy while deepening their understanding of inclusion and community.

As the organization expanded, so did its vision.

Pictured here from left are: Toba Grossbaum, Assemblywoman Rosie Bagolie, Senator John F McKeon, and Zalman Grossbaum.
Children enjoy the indoor zero-entry pool at LifeTown.
Volunteer Meghan Henderson engages visitors at the LifeTown Shoppes pet shop.

That vision led to the creation of LifeTown, a 53,000-square-foot inclusive center designed to help individuals with special needs build confidence, independence, and connection. At its heart is “Life Village,” a simulated indoor town where participants practice every day experiences such as shopping, banking, and social interaction. The center also includes recreation programs, arts activities, therapy spaces, and sports facilities that bring people of all abilities together.

About 15,000 students visit LifeTown each year, and more than 40,000 visitors pass through its doors annually.

The work continues to grow. The organization, which is open to all New Jersey communities, is now developing a new facility next door called the Soul Center, which will focus on job training, employment opportunities, and social programs for adults with special needs.

From its early days as a small volunteer effort in Livingston, the organization has grown into a powerful community force where thousands come together each year to learn, connect, and support one another — a place where friendship truly changes lives.

Designed With Intention: Inside Canoe Brook Pediatric Dentistry

DDr. Meeta Grewal owner of Canoe Brook Pediatric Dentistry has built her practice around one core idea: helping children feel safe, comfortable, and supported from the moment they walk inside. Through intentional design, personalized care, and a collaborative approach to oral health, the practice focuses on creating positive experiences for both children and parents

MANY CHILDREN FEEL NERVOUS ABOUT THE DENTIST. HOW DO YOU HELP MAKE VISITS MORE COMFORTABLE?

Everything in the practice was designed intentionally, from the living room-style waiting area to the seasonal decorations, toys, and interactive teaching tools. The goal is to help children feel relaxed from the start, using playful, hands-on interactions to build trust and create positive early experiences with dental care.

WHAT MAKES YOUR APPROACH UNIQUE?

We focus on creating a true “dental home,” not just a clinic. The practice offers complimentary desensitizing visits for very young children and children with special needs, allowing them to explore the office, receive a toy, and leave without treatment. These visits help children become familiar with the environment, build trust, and develop confidence at their own pace.

WHY IS PERSONALIZED CARE SO IMPORTANT?

Every child and family is different. The team takes time to understand concerns ranging from nutrition and oral development to speech, breastfeeding, and daily habits at home. We also collaborate closely with pediatricians, lactation consultants, speech therapists, and specialists because oral health is closely connected to a child’s overall health and development. The goal is to provide personalized preventive guidance and support for each child’s needs.

Behind the Frames: An Interview with the Optician and Owner of B&Z Opticians

YYou have won nine consecutive “Best of Essex Reader’s Choice Awards” for Best Optician —what’s the secret? It’s not one thing—it’s everything working together, intentionally.

Owning our space allowed us to create the environment we envisioned: modern, refined, and genuinely welcoming. While the look matters, the real value is felt—there’s energy, laughter, and a team dedicated to making each client’s experience memorable.

And then there’s the service. Most of our glasses are made on-site, which means speed, precision, and accountability. But what really sets us apart? Relationships. We know our clients. We remember them. And they know they matter the moment they walk in.

What makes the B&Z experience different from a typical optical shop? Working with our clients is not just a transaction—it is a process of discovery.

A prescription is just the starting point. The real work is understanding how someone lives their life. Are they in front of screens all day? Creating music? Constantly moving?

Every detail shapes the final result—no two people see the world the same way—their eyewear shouldn’t be the same either.

So, it’s not just about putting lenses into frames? Not even close. A poorly fitted frame is impossible to ignore—it slides, pinches, and distracts.

At B&Z, every frame is selected and adjusted with precision. Fit, balance, proportion, and color are refined down to the millimeter. This attention ensures each client’s frame enhances their look and comfort, providing a better everyday experience.

How important is style in that process? Style is where function meets personality.Your glasses say something before you do. They can feel bold, understated, creative, or classic. Some clients come in comfortable with what they’ve always worn—but when they’re open to it, we show them what else is possible.

That moment when someone sees themselves differently— and loves it—that’s what we’re after.

We curate frames from boutique designers across Europe and Japan because originality and quality matter. Our approach ensures clients find eyewear distinctive to them, not just more choices.

Is the process as detailed as it sounds? It is—and that’s exactly why it works. You’d be surprised how many people have never had their glasses properly adjusted. They pick them up, pay, and leave. No fitting. No fine-tuning.

At B&Z, that would never happen. Faces aren’t symmetrical. Factory settings don’t fit anyone perfectly. Those small adjustments make the difference between something you tolerate… and something you genuinely enjoy wearing every day.

What keeps clients coming back year after year? They know what they’re getting—and how they’ll be treated. We deliver value through time, attention, honesty, precision, and style. We don’t rush—we ensure every step meets our high standards. Our clients feel it, trust it, and share it—with friends, with family, with anyone looking for something better.

Nine years of awards is not just recognition, it is a reflection of strong relationships, exceptional experiences, and a dedication to helping every client be their best. We look forward to welcoming you and showing you the difference.

Getting Back Into

Chiropractic care for golfers, athletes and everyone else

Dr. Andrew Spehar

AAFTER DR. ANDREW SPEHAR SUSTAINED INJURIES PLAYING HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS, A CHIROPRACTOR HELPED HIM GET BACK ON THE FIELD. NOW, HE’S DOING THE SAME FOR OTHERS IN HIS OWN CLINIC, AND NOT JUST FOR ATHLETES.

After Dr. Andrew Spehar sustained injuries playing high school sports, a chiropractor helped him get back on the field. Now, he’s doing the same for others in his own clinic, and not just for athletes.

He founded All Square PCG (Performance-Chiropractic-Golf) in Livingston, and with his 12 years of experience and extensive certifications that go above and beyond industry requirements, his patients are getting back to doing what they love.

“I work in sports medicine, chiefly, but I also work with all sorts of patients,” he says. “I truly think everybody should be active, and what that means is different for each person.”

In addition to developing meaningful relationships with clients, one of his favorite things to do is problem solving. “There are many different techniques, and those are based on patients’ injuries, the causes of those injuries, and their goals. For example, we’re not going to treat patients in hospital beds or wheelchairs the same way we treat a 20-year-old football player.”

Before any treatment begins, Dr. Spehar conducts a pre-interview over the phone. “I want to make sure that one, that I can help them, and that two, their goals are aligned with what I want them to get out of it.”

He says that the desire to get better is strongly tied to patients’ attitudes and how hard they’re willing to work. Having been through it himself brings the assurance that he understands what they’re going through.

Dr. Spehar explains that there are basically three lanes of care in his clinic. The first is strictly chiropractic, focusing more on mobility issues and on maintaining active lifestyles by ensuring that patients have healthy joints and healthy movements, and boosting their nervous system as much as possible.

“When it comes to the adjustments themselves, and what chiropractic really excels at, is making sure that the body is in a position to function as designed and getting it back to a point of equilibrium,” he says.

Second is a mix of chiropractic, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and exercise guidance. “One of the biggest things that people struggle with, especially when they’ve been through a major injury, is a fear of getting back to the gym or getting back to activity. So, we have a small gym in the clinic so that they can get comfortable with it again.”

When it comes to the adjustments themselves, and what chiropractic really excels at, is making sure that the body is in a position to function as designed and getting it back to a point of equilibrium.
Dr. Andrew Spehar adjusting a patient
Dr. Andrew Spehar

The third lane is strictly for golfers. “We specialize in golfers,” says Dr. Spehar. “There’s a really great program that Titleist, the big golf company, put together over the last decade or so to study biomechanics, and they have a lot of great programming that I studied. I’m not a swing coach, but I can definitely help with a patient’s swing by showing them what’s safe for their body and how we can maximize their performance in the body that they’ve got.”

All Square PCG actually has Golf Bays on site. “We have cameras and biomechanics tools in the Trackman bays where I can get concrete measurements on how somebody’s performing, and we can see those measurements improve over time. We also rent the bays when not in use. My business partner, Jose Garcia, has been instrumental in preparing and managing them.”

I’m not a swing coach, but I can definitely help with a patient’s swing by

showing

them what’s safe for their body and how we can maximize their performance in the body that they’ve got.

Dr. Spehar’s treatments are highly individualized, and he treats all patients himself on a one-onone basis. From athletes training for the Paralympics to parents who just want to get back on the golf course, he takes every goal seriously.

“I want people to understand that even though they’ve had injuries and pain, there’s a way that we can try to attack it. It just starts with a conversation,” he says.

Tradition, Innovation, and Faith for Lifelong Success

OOur Lady of the Lake Catholic School (OLL) in Verona is a faith-centered Pre-K–8 school that combines tradition with innovative teaching to prepare students for the 21st century.

OLL nurtures the whole child—intellectually, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. Principal Tom Conroy credits strong Catholic faith and community dedication for the school’s close-knit, high-achieving environment.

A two-time Blue Ribbon School, OLL’s academic program emphasizes literacy, math, and faith formation. Instruction meets rigorous standards and prepares students for high school, with advanced coursework like Algebra offered in middle school.

Innovative programs enrich learning. The TREP$ entrepreneurship program (grades 5–8) teaches students how to create and manage a business, building skills in budgeting, marketing, and financial literacy. The Forensics program builds confidence and communication through public speaking, with strong competition results. Athletics— volleyball, basketball, and cross country—promote teamwork and lifelong fitness.

Parental involvement is central to OLL’s success. An active Home & School Association supports the school’s mission and funds projects like a new playground and building upgrades. “Catholic education is a shared commitment,” Conroy notes. At its heart, OLL is a place where students feel supported, inspired, and happy every day.

North Jersey Consultation Center: Support When Talking Helps

FFor individuals and families facing emotional pain, relationship struggles, anxiety, depression or difficult life transitions, the North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC) offers a place to begin.

Located in Livingston, NJCC is the treatment service of the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis, (ACAP), which provides advanced clinical training, education and community-based mental health services. The center has served the community for decades and provides psychotherapy, counseling and psychoanalysis for adults, children, couples and families, with a commitment to making care accessible—at NJCC, no applicant is turned away because of diagnosis or finances.

A personalized, evidence-based approach is central to NJCC’s philosophy. Rather than focusing only on removing symptoms, therapists help

clients understand the ways they have learned to cope and how those patterns may be affecting their lives. From there, clients can begin to identify choices, build healthier relationships and move toward greater emotional well-being by engaging their strongest points.

People come to NJCC for many reasons, including depression, family problems, relationship issues, obsessive thoughts, traumatic stress reactions, bereavement, work problems, social challenges and addiction. NJCC Director, Dr. Vicki Semel says anxiety is one of the most common concerns today.

“The world is a difficult place right now,” she says. “Anxiety gets expressed in so many different ways, but it can interfere with somebody functioning in their own world.”

NJCC connects each client with a therapist who is a good fit for their needs and schedule. Care is provided by trained clinicians, interns, graduates, therapists

and faculty connected to ACAP’s broader clinical training community. Therapists work with clients individually, as couples, and as families, helping them better understand emotional patterns, improve communication and navigate difficult life transitions.

“Many people hesitate to seek help because they feel overwhelmed, ashamed or uncertain about the process,” says ACAP Director, Dr. Patricia Bratt. NJCC strives to create an environment where clients feel supported rather than judged and where therapy becomes a pathway toward greater confidence, self-awareness and emotional resilience. The center’s overall goal is to help people feel better equipped to manage challenges, strengthen relationships, and function more successfully in everyday life.

Livingston Native Comes Full Circle, Making ParkVue Her Home

Once Again

TParkVue’s gourmet kitchen features 42-inch cabinets, stone countertops, and a five-burner gas range. Every unit also includes a full-size washer and dryer.

Susan praises the well-maintained amenities: a fitness center, resort-style pool, basketball and pickleball courts, walking trails, club room, and co-working lounge “The management team is incredibly responsive,” she said. “If something’s wrong, they fix it.”

They say home is where the heart is — and for Susan Thomas, it turns out home was right where she left it.

A lifelong Livingston resident, Susan has moved into ParkVue at Livingston multiple times over the years — always drawn back by the comfort, convenience, and community she couldn’t find anywhere else.

“We lived in five different units here,” she said with a laugh. “Once, while waiting for a condo to be built — but every time, we found ourselves coming back.”

After a disappointing experience with a newly built condominium, she and her adult son returned to ParkVue — and this time, they stayed for good.

“We sold our unit and moved back almost immediately,” Susan said. “The quality at ParkVue is on another level.”

Today, Susan lives in a one-bedroom plus den with a loft, while her son lives across the complex in his own apartment. “We’re close, but we each have our own space,” she said.

She values the sense of security and thoughtful design. “Whether I come home at 11 p.m. or midday, I feel totally safe. The underground parking, video intercom system, and gated access offer real peace of mind.”

She also enjoys the upscale finishes: hardwood floors in the living areas, ceramic tile baths, walk-in closets, and 9-foot ceilings. “I even have a balcony, which is perfect in the warmer months.”

“There are a lot of new buildings going up, but ParkVue has something special,” she said. “It’s clean, well-kept, and still feels like a community.”

“At ParkVue, I have everything I need — space, quality, peace of mind, and people who care.”

She has built a welcoming destination where service, generosity, and connection are as important as expert fittings and beautiful products. Through fundraisers, educational outreach, and customer appreciation programs, giving back is a natural part of the business.

The boutique pairs high-quality bras with personalized service, including post-surgical, bridal, swim, and loungewear. It also regularly hosts sip-and-shop fundraisers supporting local synagogues, churches, schools, PTO and PTA groups, Sisterhood organizations, Kiwanis International, and more. Dutcher also organizes bra collections for I Support the Girls, donates gift cards to school fundraisers, and sponsors Livingston women’s softball.

She also partners with community groups and William Paterson University for seminars on fit, breast health, garment care, and confidence.

Loyalty and referral programs, VIP rewards cards, and flexible hours for early morning or evening appointments reflect the same thoughtful approach, showing appreciation for the customers who support the business.

Whether helping raise funds, educating women, or making every shopper feel valued, Sitting Pretty proves small businesses can make a big impact.

iStrive Helps Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum Keep Growing

FFor high-functioning young adults on the autism spectrum, the years after high school can be especially challenging. Many support systems end at 18 or 21, with these individuals “falling off the cliff” after leaving traditional school-based services. Families are often left searching for meaningful opportunities that can help their loved ones build independence, confidence, and connection.

iStrive, run by ACAP (the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis), based in Livingston, provides support for individuals navigating adulthood. Through iStrive, participants continue developing social relationships, emotional well-being, independence, and career readiness.

Director Patricia Bratt, PhD, says ACAP began developing iStrive after consulting with families and gaining a deeper understanding of what individuals on the spectrum need most.

“We decided we would set up a program that involved the families and the young adults to address this underserved population,” states Dr. Bratt. “Parents are the best resource for knowing what their kids need.”

Today, iStrive meets on Saturdays from 9:30am to 1:30pm at ACAP’s Livingston facility. Participants range in age from 18 to 35. Sessions include workshops, conversations, activities, and collaborative projects designed to help members advocate for themselves, work with others, build teamwork skills, and think about their futures. Dr. Bratt says, “Many participants struggle with anxiety, particularly in social situations, and iStrive helps them build confidence and communication skills in a supportive environment.”

The program encourages collaboration and self-advocacy, allowing participants to have a voice in activities and experiences rather than having decisions made entirely for them. Dr. Bratt feels that many people hold outdated stereotypes about individuals on the spectrum and underestimate how much they can contribute.

The initiative is rooted in the belief that individuals on the spectrum continue to grow, even if that growth occurs at a different pace than their neurotypical peers. “Many participants go on to jobs, graduate school, and more independent futures as they continue building confidence, communication, and interpersonal skills through the program.” Dr. Bratt expresses.

Rather than limiting participants through stereotypes, iStrive helps them strengthen skills, relationships, and their sense of agency as they move toward adulthood.

More Than Tutoring C2 Education Supports Students and Families

C

C2 Education Livingston is helping students and families navigate far more than just SAT and ACT prep. The center offers a personalized, “360-degree” approach designed to support students from third grade through high school.

In addition to individualized tutoring in core academic subjects, C2 provides college planning services that help families map out courses, summer activities, applications, essays, and long-term academic goals. “We’re really a onestop shop,” said Center Director Jaime de Leon II. “Our focus is helping children and families meet their academic goals.”

What makes C2 unique is its individualized curriculum model. Rather than placing students into a one-size-fits-all program, each student receives support tailored to their strengths, challenges, and learning style.

The Livingston center also offers summer enrichment opportunities including preview programs that help students prepare for upcoming classes before the new school year begins. Reading, book, and writing camps are also available to help strengthen comprehension and communication skills while supporting students with their assigned summer reading. Summer SAT, ACT, and test prep camps are offered as well.

With the college admissions process constantly evolving, C2 aims to help families stay informed, prepared, and confident every step of the way.

A Fresh Look at Dry Eye Treatment

MMaison De Vision, led by optometrist Dr. Anuradha Rana, is redefining eye care with a boutique, patientcentered approach that blends medical expertise with a modern, spa-like experience. While the practice offers comprehensive services for patients of all ages, from routine eye exams to contact lens fittings and disease management, one area of growing focus is advanced treatment for dry eye.

Dry eye is more common than many people realize, and often misunderstood. Symptoms can include redness, blurry vision, eye fatigue, discharge, or even excessive tearing. “Watery eyes are actually a sign of dryness,” Dr. Rana explains, noting that environmental factors, hormonl changes, and seasonal allergies can all play a role.

At Maison De Vision, patients benefit from advanced diagnostic testing that evaluates tear quality, gland function, and inflammation. From there, customized treatment plans are created based on individual needs and budget.

Among the most innovative offerings is IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy, a multi-session treatment designed to reduce inflammation and improve tear production. Unlike traditional methods like eye drops or warm compresses, IPL addresses the root cause of dry eye, providing longlasting relief. Many patients see significant improvement after a series of four sessions, with only occasional maintenance needed.

Beyond function, IPL also offers aesthetic benefits, helping to reduce fine lines and improve skin tone around the eyes.

Additional treatment options include punctal gel inserts that help retain moisture for several months, as well as other in-office therapies that support overall eye health.

Maison De Vision accepts both vision and medical insurance, making high-quality, advanced eye care accessible. With its personalized approach and commitment to innovation, the practice is helping patients not only see better, but feel better in their everyday lives.
