Camuso Holiday Display

T

he Camuso Holiday Display will kick off this year with a lighting ceremony on Saturday, December 1 at 7pm. The child-friendly event will include a trackless train ride and a Character visitor appearance for children to take photos with. The Camuso Committee has many special events planned during the month. On Wednesday, December 5 at 5:30pm, there will be a Chanukah Menorah Lighting. Returning this year are the Clydesdale horses and carriage rides for the entire family. On December 15, The Livingston Fire Department & Livingston First Aid Squad will sponsor kids’ activities and Santa on a Firetruck. For many decades prior to his passing, Ernie Camuso of Burnet Hill Road in Livingston designed and built one of the most elaborate Christmas displays. When the family could no longer display these at their home, they turned to the Township of Livingston and the entire collection was donated to a volunteer group known as the Camuso Committee.

Camuso Holiday Display

he Crown Jewels Gala was held at the Crystal Plaza this November to honor Cathy Silverman, Executive Director of NCJW/ Essex. Silverman has sparked the growth of NCJW/Essex with many new and innovative programs and initiatives such as the Back 2 School Store, Chai Circle, the Kids Emergency Closet, the Women’s Seder and the A-List for Advocacy to name just a few. With Silverman at the helm, NCJW/Essex has made a difference in the lives of women, children and families throughout Essex County and New Jersey.

Standing behind Cathy Silverman are (l–r): Susan Gallinson, Gala co-chair, Lesley Greenstein, NCJW/ Essex President, Karen Cherins and Penny Sherry, Gala co-chairs

Silverman, a lifetime member of NCJW, commented, “For 20 years as a volunteer and then 18 years as Executive Director, one thing has never changed in the way I feel about NCJW/ Essex–there is no other organization more special than this one. Every day I look forward to my job and the work we do which enables me to experience the pure joy of the women, children and families whose lives we improve with our services.” NCJW/Essex has been an advocate for social change in Essex County for over 100 years. Nearly 300 benefactors, volunteers, friends, family and staff were proud to pay tribute to Silverman at the Crown Jewels Gala.

Caldwell University to Honor Head Basketball Coach By Susan Baldani

M

ark A. Corino, assistant vice president, director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach at Caldwell University, will have the honor of having the playing floor at the George R. Newman Center named after him. A head coach for 36 years, he has spent almost 31 of those years at the university.

Mark A. Corino “During his tenure at the university, Mark has moved the institution into the NCAA as a Division II school; has overseen the creation of the George R. Newman Center, which houses the athletic offices, gym, fitness center and Hall of Fame; and has seen the number of student athletes double and the number of teams grow from a handful to 15,” said Caldwell University President Dr. Nancy Blattner. Coach Corino, a Belleville native, thanks his older brothers James and Carl, as well as his late parents, for encouraging him to play sports from an early age. Along with his brothers, now retired from coaching, they have over 1100 wins combined. Corino also stated that he owes a lot to his mentor, Al LoBalboa, a one-time assistant coach at Army as well as head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Corino’s wife of 34 years, Susan, has also been beside him every step of the way. “This honor is not just about me; it’s an honor for our program and for all those who have participated and worked with me over the years,” said Corino. He feels that the ability to share this moment with his players and assistant coaches is the greatest thing about this tribute.

besity is a global problem, notes Saniea F. Majid, MD, FACS, FASMBS, Diplomate of American Board of Obesity Medicine, founder of the Weight Loss and Wellness Center, notes that the United States is the leader in all degrees of obesity. “Thirty percent of the population, one in three, is obese.” “The medical community recognizes it as a disease,” she says. “The general population is lost in stigmas and biases.” Obesity is a chronic disease that presents multiple symptoms and does not develop or disappear overnight. Dr. Majid received her training at Brown University, New Jersey Medical School, Newark and University of California in San Diego, with leading pioneers of this field such as Dr. Alan Wittgrove and Dr. Santiago Horgan. At the Weight Loss and Wellness Center, she develops an individualized management plan for each patient. She purposely focuses on

The Downside of OTC Hearing Aids By Cynthia Burns

P

eople with hearing loss are drawn to the concept of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, Internet hearing aids, and big box store hearing aids, because of the possibility of lower costs. Since Medicare does not provide coverage for hearing aids, cost is an important consideration. For some it is the only consideration, leading to a multitude of problems. OTC hearing aids will become available to those with mild to medium hearing loss in approximately 3 years. What many people do not realize is that there is more to a hearing aid than just amplification of sounds and price. Hearing perception has its variables and these differ from individual to individual. Fitting identical hearing aids on people with identical hearing test results yields varying degrees of satisfaction and success.

“Buying hearing aids is not like buying a TV set. Hearing aids require a lot of service and support.” —Enid Smith

Enid Smith, an audiologist and owner of Discount Hearing Aids in Livingston, explains, “There is the rehabilitative aspect. An audiologist optimizes a patient’s hearing to the best of the patient’s ability and potential. Sound is complicated. Brains are complicated. Perception of sound is unique from individual to individual.” Audiologists are trained to choose a device that matches the lifestyle and needs of the patient, fitting and programming it, and providing support services. Smith adds, “Buying hearing aids is not like buying a TV set. Hearing aids require a lot of service and support. With time, we know the brain deals with sounds differently and we need to adjust the aids as the brain changes.” Without expert support and appropriate rehabilitation and counseling, only a few

will be lucky enough to hear optimally from non-professionally fit hearing aids. OTC hearing aids are not without merit. However, they are not the best choice to guarantee optimal hearing. Smith says, “Inexpensive reading glasses have their place, but there are millions who need the services of optometrists to customize a script.” So, sure, try OTC aids when they become available–but if they fail to deliver, do not assume hearing aids are not going to help you. See your local expert and let them use their years of training, knowledge and experience to help you reach your hearing potential.

A Dental Legacy Continues PASSING THE TORCH By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein

A

premier cosmetic and general dental practice serving the Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield communities continues to flourish as Judith Post, D.M.D., now retired, has passed the torch to Arthur Yeh, D.D.S. Dr. Post knew that Dr. Yeh, who was seeking to become associated with a high quality, boutique dental practice was a perfect match. He would continue her legacy of meticulous dentistry and devoted patient care that she brought to the practice for more than 30 years. “After meeting Dr. Yeh, I knew immediately that I wanted him to be my successor. He would maintain the unique professional and personal bond I had developed with my patients,” remarked Dr. Post. “He had impressive credentials, impeccable skills, and a caring demeanor. I took great comfort in knowing that my patients would continue to enjoy the care and compassion to which they had become accustomed.” Dr. Yeh is a graduate of Rutgers University, holding both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He received his dental degree from the New York University College of Dentistry, where he was part of the Senior Honors Program. Through the program, he delivered dental services to lower-income residents in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He also completed his general practice residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Flushing, NY.

Dr. Arthur Yeh He performs sophisticated cosmetic dentistry including porcelain veneers, crowns and implants restorations as well as routine dental procedures. He enjoys working with patients of all ages, particularly children. As a new dad, Dr. Yeh is keenly interested in instilling good oral hygiene habits in all children. He also performs “smile assessments,” as he calls them. “I want my work to look the best it can,” he says. “I am not satisfied until it is perfect.” The dental office and staff, as they have always been, are warm and welcoming to patients. Upon entering, patients are greeted by a spacious and cozy “living room environment.” Each treatment room still employs the most up-to-date digital and computerized technology. Dr. Yeh states, “We are committed to delivering individualized care to the highest professional and academic standard such that the lives of our patients are enriched and enhanced.”

Do You Really Need Less Salt?

M

ore research seems to contradict the oft-stated notion that we eat too much salt. The latest such study appeared in The Lancet medical journal. The study found that for the majority of people there is no health benefit from a low-salt diet and no harm from the average salt consumption of most people. The lead scientist working on this study, Dr. Andrew Mente of McMaster University, worked with researchers around the globe to monitor the salt intake and health of more than 95,000 individuals in 18 countries for an average of eight years. They also monitored the associations between sodium and potassium intake and blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and mortality. They found that most people around the world already are in the healthy range of sodium consumption—between 3,000 and 5,000 mg per day—and that

people who consumed salt at the higher end of the healthy range had better health outcomes and fewer incidences of heart attacks. Only in China, where consumption was over 5,000 mg per day, was intake associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke. In addition, they found a positive effect of increased potassium consumption, noting, “All major cardiovascular outcomes decreased with increasing potassium intake in all countries.” Despite this new research the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to insist that Americans should consume no more than 2,300 mg per day of sodium and the American Heart Association recommends a daily maximum of 1,500 mg. Americans currently consume an average of 3,400 mg per day. Dr. Martin O’Donnell, also at McMaster University and a co-author of the study, said, “Public health strategies should

be based on best evidence. There is no convincing evidence that people with moderate or average sodium intake need to reduce their sodium intake for prevention of heart disease and stroke.” —(BPT)

Taking Steps to

PREVENT FALLS

W

hen you’re young, an injury from a fall may sideline you for a few days or weeks, but a full recovery is usually quick. As you get older, the consequences of falls can become more serious, setting up a sequence of events that can have longstanding implications on independence and health. Risk factors for falls in older people include overall health (chronic diseases and physical conditions), environment (hazards and situations at home) and behaviors, such as rushing around or standing on a chair to reach something. These steps from the experts at the National Council on Aging can help prevent falls: STAY ACTIVE: Walking, gardening or taking an exercise class are just a few ways to keep your heart healthy and your muscles toned.

Thank You for Voting for Us! Bronze Winner for Best Medi-Spa

Suburban Essex

MANAGE UNDERLYING CHRONIC CONDITIONS: The better your overall health, the lower your risk of falls. Chronic conditions like diabetes, depression, osteoarthritis, obesity and high blood pressure can increase your risk.

2018 Bronze Winner

REVIEW MEDICATIONS: Side effects from and interactions with some medications can cause dizziness that can increase the risk of falling. Types of medicine associated with an increased risk include sedatives and diuretics as well as those used to treat high blood pressure and anxiety. GET YOUR EYES CHECKED: Vision changes as you age, so it is important to get your eyes checked once a year to make sure your prescription is up to date and screen for any eye-related diseases like cataracts and glaucoma, which are usually treatable when caught at an early stage. ASSESS YOUR HOME: Look around your home for potential hazards. Consider enlisting the help of a family member or neighbor who may be more likely to notice things you don’t. Install grab bars in your bathrooms, get rid of slippery throw rugs (or add a rubber backing) and keep passageways inside and outside your home well-lit and free from clutter and debris. Chef Francesco Palmieri

Il Vecchio at Calandra’s Italian Village YOUR NEXT CULINARY DESTINATION By Dan Epstein

A

fter ten years as chef/owner of The Orange Squirrel in Bloomfield, Chef Francesco Palmieri was offered the helm of Il Vecchio Café in Calandra’s Italian Village. Since March 2017, he has been ramping up both the elegance and the cuisine of this local landmark. With Chef Palmieri come specialty purveyors. One such ingredient is the Organic Scottish Salmon that arrives daily and is used in several of Palmieri’s new menu items, such as Salmon Cakes, and of his favorites,

76

Suburban Essex

Winter 2018

Spinach Fettuccine in Vodka Sauce which features chunks of Scottish Salmon. The fettuccine, like almost all of the pasta at Il Vecchio, is made on the premises. Another favorite of his new menu comes to you from the pizza oven—a vegetarian flatbread named for Anthony Calandra’s father Luciano. It features a spinach puree, a combination of mozzarella and ricotta cheeses, crispy shallots, sliced seedless grapes, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

While Il Vecchio is the flagship of the Village, there’s also an award-winning outdoor café, a tavern room with its own special menu and occasional live musical acts, and a wine room perfect for paired tasting menus for up to 30 people. On the premises as well is one of three Calandra’s Bakery locations and Calandra’s deli, also an awardwinner, which hosts an informal dining room for folks who’d rather sit down and dine than take their goodies home to eat.

It’s important to note that with Palmieri at the helm, while the elegance factor at Il Vecchio has risen, it’s still a familycentric place. Families with children will be very happy during the day and in early evening…and later in the evening, when the lights get dimmed, people on a date will “find it to be a romantic destination,” Palmieri says.

Diamond Minds

Don’t Do It Once. Don’t Do It Twice.

DO IT 1000 TIMES The Magic of Continuous Effort By Barry Farber

T

he ultimate achievement of an art, skill or profession does not come by one large step. Improvement comes only as the result of continuous effort. That effort needs to be ingrained in your mind, body and soul. What is the art, profession or skill you’re trying to master? In the beginning it seems uncomfortable because we are learning something new. Then at some point we go through a period of boredom...and that can be the time we lose focus or the discipline to continue. But this is where the Breakthroughs occur. We need to keep going and enter the moment where we are no longer thinking about the action. This state of mind can be obtained during any activity, whether it’s sculpting, playing baseball or giving a business presentation. Any activity where you’re either learning something brand new or working on mastering a current project. We go through stages. Think of it this way: there seems to be four stages we go through to reach the point of doing something extremely well without thinking. In the moment. That’s because it’s all that has gone before to build that foundation and comfort.

Here are the 4 stages:

Barry Farber

1. Unconsciously Incompetent This is where we don’t know what we need to do or how to do it. 2. Consciously Incompetent Now we become aware of what we need to do to become competent, but we are not there yet. 3. Consciously Competent Now we are aware of the skills needed and we are competent in the actions but still thinking too much about it. 4. Unconsciously Competent This is the ultimate stage of being comfortable in the present. We are now performing with the entire mind, body and soul as one natural action for peak performance. At every stage discipline is required to stay on the path.

“Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It is a result of something…hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” —Roger Staubach

Someone once said the purpose of life is to help others through it. When you have a path in front of you that adds value to those around you it keeps your faith strong and confidence solid. This is a huge part of the momentum when continuing on your disciplines every day. It reminds you of the “why” in what you’re doing and the positive push to continue.
