Reviving Past Elegance By Christine S. Maxwell Photos by Dan Epstein

G

ikas Painting, established in 1982, recaptures the splendor of Victorian homes in Montclair and surrounding communities. “Our mission is to bring houses back to life,” says owner, George Mihalis. Originally specializing in painting, Gikas Painting now provides full services to restore the complete beauty of homes and to enhance their property values. Among the services offered are interior and exterior painting; roof and gutter installation; siding repairs and installation; renovations of kitchens and bathrooms; porch additions, flooring installation; and structural repairs to homes. “Our work covers everything from roof to basement,” Mihalis adds.

George Mihalis

Restoration of the home’s exterior is completed normally in two to three weeks. A time management expert with the goal of completing jobs quickly and to customer satisfaction, Mihalis organizes all facets of the work—from building permits, designs, renovations to payment plans. The executed program, known as “Gikas Wizard,” is an individualized plan for each home designed to restore its original and unique grandeur.

Painting is paramount to capturing past glory. Mihalis works with the design of every home to produce the correct palette of colors. After the selection of colors, a meticulous preparation process ensues with paint stripping, caulking, fixing walls and priming. Then the colors that enliven the homes are applied. Mihalis and his team take pride in a job well done. Customer satisfaction is vital. Gikas offers an 8 to 10-year warranty on painting jobs and a 20-year warranty on roofs—among the best warranties in the George and Kristina Mihalis industry. Similarly, Gikas Painting has received Angie’s List Super Service Award for the past five years. Exemplifying outstanding customer service, Mihalis recalls the time he rode his bicycle five miles in a rain storm to deliver a promised proposal to a prospective client. “The client was so impressed with my dedication that he offered me the job on the spot,” he related. Mihalis states that his ultimate goal is to surpass the original grandeur of every home that he restores. Remarks Mihalis, “I want to bring the homes back to their former glory.”

Dr. Robin Gehrmann

ADV I S OR

The Athlete’s Orthopedist

Suburban Essex

By Rhonda L. Rivera, Photos by Daniel Epstein

T

o whom should an athlete turn after being sidelined from their sport following an acute shoulder or knee injury? The answer is Dr. Robin Gehrmann, who has devoted his career to helping athletes, especially younger ones, return to the field safely and reliably. Team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers for several years prior to joining North Jersey Orthopedic Group in Millburn, Dr. Gehrmann has collaborated with elite therapists and trainers. He now applies that knowledge to helping his patients recover. He also instructs on injury prevention, which is more prevalent now due to overuse. Orthopedics called to Dr. Gehrmann because he enjoys solving problems. During high school and college, he worked in his own carpentry business. He transferred these skills to working on the human body, especially enjoying the biologic reconstructive nature of the practice. His areas of specialty include minimallyinvasive arthroscopic procedures, and complex ligament and cartilage transplant and reconstruction. When asked what drew him to sports medicine, he explains that he can relate to athletes and understands what it takes to get back to a sport, even while recovering. Moreover, Dr. Gehrmann seeks innovative ways to cross-train around an injury. He often coordinates work-outs with coaches and trainers so the athlete can remain immersed the sport while safely recovering. Dr. Gehrmann describes his approach as conservative. His first choice is always to wait and do rehabilitation, if possible, saving surgery as a last resort. “I treat the individual, not the MRI, integrating the person’s age and activity level with personal expectations,” notes Dr. Gehrmann. After explaining all options, doctor and patient set out a personal course of treatment. Patients rave about Dr. Gehrmann’s warm, friendly, reassuring bedside manner. They point to his professionalism in how he takes the time to explain every option. He prides himself on educating each patient to achieve optimum results. Dr. Gehrmann is the Head Team Physician for all of the Rutgers-Newark Athletic teams and several high schools as well. In addition to football and soccer players, he also works with gymnasts and Mixed Martial Artists. He is the Rutgers Orthopaedic resident education site coordinator at Overlook Hospital. Dr. Gehrmann completed his Residency at RutgersNew Jersey Medical School and Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Trending NOW What to Eat Before Exercise

H

eaded to the gym later? Did you know that what you eat—and when you eat—can have an impact on your workout and cause stomach cramps and other hindering side effects? Two hours before working out, avoid high-fiber veggies such as broccoli, onions and beans, as well as foods that are high in fat, such as burgers and ice cream. This is the time to stick to foods with protein, carbs and healthy fats—peanut butter or grilled chicken, for example. If you’re fueling up an hour before the gym, avoid gasproducing fruits, such as apples and melons. Instead, have a small bowl of cereal or a light, easily digested carb/protein-filled snack. For a quick bite 15 minutes prior to a workout, eat a banana or some applesauce and stay away from bagels, granola bars and other foods with large servings of carbohydrates, protein, fat and fiber.

or the 60 million Americans that suffer with motion sickness, that dreaded feeling of nausea is now a thing of the past with the introduction of ReliefBand, a wearable, clinically proven device that is FDA cleared for the drug-free treatment of nausea associated with morning and motion sickness. ReliefBand is the first in a new breed of over the counter devices called a “treatable” - a wearable device that can actually treat a condition rather than just monitor symptoms or activity. It works in minutes, helping people to have stress free travel on planes, trains, automobiles, boats, rollercoasters or any form of transport known to man. As ReliefBand is a drug-free solution, it has none of the side effects or safety concerns of medications such as drowsiness, dry mouth, or adverse drug interactions. The technology behind Relief band has been doctor recommended for the treatment of nausea for nearly 20 years in clinical and hospital settings and has now been made available over the counter in this smart wearable device. ReliefBand is priced at $89.99 and currently available on line at www.relief band.com, Amazon and authorized suppliers.

r. Kathryn Wells George is a gynecologist dedicated to women’s health. She brings to her practice a personal approach to each patient, a warm bedside manner, and a deep clinical background. After working primarily in obstetrics and delivering over 4,000 babies, Dr. George realized that what women were asking for was time to discuss and treat their intimate needs with a different focus from what goes on in the normal gynecology visit. It was then that she decided to focus on management of sexual health concerns and menopause. She is the first gynecologist to offer vulvovaginal rejuvenation in Morris Dr. Kathryn Wells George and Union County. Dr. George’s protocol calls for the use of ThermiVA, an FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure that is groundbreaking. It addresses multiple symptoms that affect women’s overall quality of life. Over the course of three treatments, one month apart, women can restore and revive feminine wellness without anesthesia or discomfort. There is a recommended annual maintenance follow-up treatment.

S

tuffy Nose? Before you reach for the cold medicine, consider nasal irrigation for relief. Nasal irrigation is a gentle, effective method of using saline solution to cleanse nasal cavities and wash out mucus and allergens. The salt water restores moisture and lessens inflammation of the mucus membranes.

Call Today: 973-241-4198 Before you reach for the cold medicine, consider nasal irrigation for relief.

According to WebMD, using a saline solution daily can help thin mucus, decrease postnasal drip, and cleanse your nasal passages of bacteria. Three times a week was often enough once symptoms subside. Try using saline solution with a neti pot, both of which you can find at a local drugstore. Nasal irrigation is generally considered to be safe, but a small percentage of regular users experience mild side effects such as minor nasal irritation. People whose immune system isn’t fully functioning should ask their doctor before trying nasal irrigation because they are at greater risk for infections.

o support and protect—that’s the job of the human skeleton’s 206 bones. It’s a lifelong task that requires bones to continually rebuild themselves, forming new cells and strengthening weak spots. And like most body processes, this “reconstruction” slows down with age, sometimes with adverse results. Statistics show that one in two women and one in four men over 50 will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis, a chronic condition characterized by low bone density and deficits in calcium and other minerals that render bones brittle and highly breakable. Bone density is measured as a T-score via low-radiation x-ray. A T-score below -1 is cause for concern and requires medical consultation. Fortunately, you can reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis by eating well and exercising regularly.

Food-wise

Ingesting enough calcium, along with Vitamin D, is critical to bone health. But how much do you need and what foods offer these valuable nutrients? According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which revised its long-standing recommendations in 2010, adults 19 to 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium daily and 1,200 mg daily for adults 51 and over. For children, the suggested dietary allowance is 700 mg between one and three years of age; 1,000 mg between four and eight; and 1,300 mg between nine and 18. For Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, the IOM recommends 600 IU per day from age one to 70. This figure increases to 800 IU for those over 70.

Dairy products and leafy greens (both cooked and raw) are particularly high in calcium and Vitamin D, so incorporate items like low-fat or fat-free yogurt, milk and cheese and vegetables like broccoli, spinach and kale into your diet. Other good sources include salmon, sardines, oysters, lean chicken and beans. You can also include whole-grain breads and pastas, which provide magnesium, another mineral that helps maintain bone strength. But because whole grains can interfere with calcium absorption, experts advise not eating them simultaneously with calcium-rich foods. And stay away from caffeine, sugar and high protein as much as possible, as they can actually cause the body to excrete calcium. If you’re unable to get enough calcium and Vitamin D from your diet, supplements and herbs may provide a solution and can be purchased at health food stores and some drug stores. Chocolate chews such as Viactiv contain calcium as well as Vitamin D. Take the suggested dosage, ideally at a time of day when you have not just eaten foods high in calcium. As for herbs, try adding alfalfa, barley grass, dandelion root, nettle or parsley to your diet. They can be taken in various forms, all of which help build bone.

Exercise-wise

Believe it or not, bones last longer if you place greater stress on them. Weight-bearing routines that involve weight lifting, walking, running, hiking and dancing are best for strengthening bones. These activities, done three to four times a week, have been shown to boost bone density in the upper body and upper thighs, which are particularly prone to fractures when bones are weakened. While any exercise is better than no exercise, people with osteoporosis should not use excessively heavy weights or engage in overly vigorous activity, which can put them at a higher risk for fractures. What cannot be stressed enough is that a focus on building healthy bones is advantageous at any age, the younger the better, of course. And whenever you begin an exercise regimen, or choose to add herbs or supplements to your diet, speak with your physician first to ensure that you make the right decisions for your health.

SHUNJU Summit’s Answer for Sushi and Asian-Fusion Cuisine Danny Wang

resh ingredients. Superior quality. Beautiful presentation. Summit’s newcomer, Shunju, offers all these, and more.

In less than five months, Danny Wang’s newest eatery—he also owns Umi Sushi in Millburn—has made quite an impression on area diners. Sushi and Asian-fusion cuisine delight taste buds with unique flavor profiles in a wonderful atmosphere, all under Wang’s watchful eye. The menu at Shunju offers something for every palate. In the mood for sushi? Check out the Modern Style Sushi, especially White Tuna with kiwi and yuzu miso ($5) or Big Eye Tuna with a garlic chip ($5.50). The quality of fish, which Wang procures daily from local markets, is evident in every bite. Don’t miss Shunju’s inspired Cold Appetizers, such as Hamachi Crush ($18). High-quality fish and inspired dishes take center stage cilantro and serrano pepper. The kick is perfect but by no means overwhelming. Also try the Sushi Pizza ($13), a creative dish featuring tortilla chips topped with guacamole, bell pepper, onion, tobiko and tuna. The beautiful Treasure Island ($15) is almost too gorgeous to eat! It has tuna, salmon, white ďŹ sh with spicy sauce, ponzu and tobiko encased in sliced avocado, with a seaweed salad on the top. For an entrĂŠe, select the Monsoon Duck ($30), a very generous portion of perfectly prepared sliced, boneless roasted duck wrapped in a crepe with bean sprouts, cucumber, lettuce and herbs and topped with a house sauce. Or choose the uber-tasty Bo-Luc-Lac ($24), 8 ounces of quickly stir-fried beef cubes served with fried taro chips and a salad. Shunju hits the mark with a variety of other dishes as well. Rock shrimp ($15) has the right amount of heat; pumpkin and spinach cream soup ($9) is a must for all pumpkin lovers; fried calamari ($11) is an unusual take on the Italian classic. Whatever your fancy, Shunju surpasses expectations.

Leveraging Change C

priorities?” If not, take some names out and add in others who are integral to helping you build your business.

hange is hard for many people. But really, it’s what makes life exciting. Changing our minds, habits, environment and the people with whom we surround ourselves. Mixing things up and constantly learning. Not settling for the same old thing. Here’s a profound statement… if you want to make changes in your life, you have to make changes in your life. It’s easy to do the things you’ve always done and do them the way you’ve always done them. It’s a lot harder, and a lot more rewarding, to be proactive and constantly look for ways to improve. Making major changes can be difficult. But often, taking small steps makes the biggest difference. For instance: • Change your favorites. Some people keep a list of their top 20 contacts on their phone. These are the 20 business-related people you may call the most; perhaps they’re your priority customers. As business situations change, it may be time to ask “Are these 20 people still my highest

• Change your surroundings. It’s hard to ignore things that are right in front of you. My walls are covered with reminders of projects I’m involved in, projects I hope to be involved in and achievements I can celebrate. When I walk into my office, I can see where I’ve been, where I am and where I’m going. This is my “war room,” and it can’t remain static. Life is made up of adjustments, compromises and sacrifices; we must be steadfast in moving toward our goals, yet realistic in our willingness to make changes to achieve them. • Change your knowledge level. The only way you’re going to move to a higher level is by making changes based on what you know about your profession. Explore new ways—like social media—to connect with others in your field or make new partnerships that can add value to your larger goal. Use their strengths to bolster your weaknesses, and vice versa. If you’re selling a

product or Barry Farber service look for unusual ways to improve and increase the distribution of your product and services to market. Make a small change every day. Look at your desk and work environment. Papers and other things collect on our desks and end up obscuring important documents. Every once in a while, move those papers around. Clean out one drawer, and you might be surprised at what you find. You don’t need to make radical changes. Instead, I dare you to make small, directed changes every day to alter and improve the way you spend your time. The secret to change is to focus on the opportunities of the new path, not on the comfort of a worn trail. Ask yourself, “What can I do for the next hour that will be the most productive use of my time?” When you think like that, all your activities become focused and honed. The end result is made up of 100 well-done activities. Collectively, they help you make the breakthrough to the changes you want in your life.

Barry Farber is a radio and television host with expertise in sales and marketing topics, as well as a marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers.
