Dr. Aurora DeJuliis Brings a Revolutionary Neck and Face Treatment Back From Paris

t her European medical spa in Montclair, Dr. Aurora DeJuliis has implemented a revolutionary treatment from Paris that is able to “effectively rejuvenate the aging face and neck without surgery.” Dr. DeJuliis, who opened the first medical spa in New Jersey and has been in practice for over thirty years, stated that the procedure is inspired by the “individualized European approach to aesthetics” in which all forms of aging are “analyzed on a case-by-case basis in order to achieve the most natural and effective results.”

DeJuliis states that this new anti-aging technique, referred to as “The Bon Lift” at her office, uses three steps: a detailed facial and structural analysis, the use of cannulas and the use of a customized combination of fillers injected under the skin. She also offers an array of other specialties at her practice, including “wrinkle reduction, cellulite and fat reduction, skin tightening, skin resurfacing, skin rejuvenation, body contouring, and weight loss” in order to make her patients look good on the outside so that they feel better on the inside. Dr. DeJuliis’ medical spa is located at 8 Hillside Avenue, Suite 102 in Montclair. For more information, visit their website at or call 973-338-6300.

Experience The Slow Burn Personal Training Method— Now in Montclair

erious Strength’s Slow Burn personal training studios have expanded from NYC to Montclair at 25 Watchung Plaza. This is not your typical gym. It is a spotlessly clean, private, quiet, elegant personal training studio designed to be the ideal exercise environment for improving your strength, flexibility and cardio capacity. The Slow Burn method is a very slow and controlled method of resistance training performed on high-tech, MedX exercise equipment. The slow tempo combined with their superior equipment builds strength, bone density, aerobic capacity and flexibility in just two, 15-30 minute sessions a week. Even one is highly productive. The certified instructors all specialize in a form of slow speed, low force strength training called Slow Burn, popularized by Montclair High alum, Fredrick Hahn’s best-selling book The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution. A Beloved Local “Lady” Turns 90 By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein

beloved Essex County lady turns 90 this year, and although she won’t blow out candles or open presents, her birthday is being celebrated by hundreds of her friends and supporters. This “lady” is Our Lady of the Lake, a Pre-K to 8th grade Catholic school and parish established in Verona in 1924. Birthday commemorations are ongoing this year, including a celebratory mass last spring and festivities planned for the fall. The fact that Our Lady of the Lake has not only survived but thrived in an age of overall declining enrollment and closings of Catholic schools nationwide is a testament to the devotion of its families, staff and students. Leading the charge is Sister Mary Agnes Sullivan, O.P. Now in her 25th year as principal, she praises the warm, loving atmosphere at her school. “OLL is really a family. Our children are truly happy coming to school, and I love that. They are wonderful, loving kids who still have the simplicity of childhood.” Sister Mary Agnes observes that during her time as principal, OLL students have come from long distances and many diverse backgrounds. She credits this successful outreach to a strong marketing team and extremely involved parents. “We recognize that parents make a lot of sacrifices—of time, talent and treasure--to send their children here, and we so appreciate them.”

Sister Mary Agnes w/ (L-R) Daniela Trujillo, Ed Baumgartner, Brianna Horton and Aiden Bertron

Our Lady of the Lake School offers very strong academics with Catholic values woven into the day. Sister Mary Agnes notes proudly, “We are Middle States-accredited and have received a Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education.” In order to maintain these high standards, OLL is constantly upgrading its curriculum. “We recently updated our math curriculum and are currently doing the same for language arts. What we want is for our students to

develop critical thinking skills.” These improvements are teacher-led, rather than imposed from above. “We have a very stable, committed faculty; some of our teachers have been here for 20 years. They really care about the kids.” Sister Mary Agnes adds that, “Here at OLL, we educate the whole child— academically, socially and spiritually. We begin and end the day with prayer; the gift of quiet time for reflection is so important. It is a time for our kids to get in touch with the God that is within them. In addition, we teach religion as a formal subject.” OLL students also celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Sister Agnes cites Father Joseph D’Amico, the brand-new pastor of Our Lady of the Lake parish, as “tremendously supportive of our school.” Looking ahead, Sister Mary Agnes expresses confidence in Our Lady of the Lake School’s future, saying she has “faith that this school will remain strong for at least the next 90 years.”

Dieci Uomo: Salon & Spa Just for Men

ieci Uomo, which means The Man in Italian, is the only full service salon and spa exclusively for men in New Jersey. Owners Marie and Paul Gaglioti were very aware of the growing movement toward male-driven grooming services and products. Dieci Lifestyle Spa, their first salon which was opened in 1995, catered to both men and women, but the Gagliotis saw the need for an exclusive salon just for male clients.

Dieci Uomo uses all its own products for this service: a pre-shave exfoliant, oil, shave cream, and aftershave, all made with natural botanicals. For all services, the majority of product lines are organic or contain natural ingredients based from plants and botanicals. Men can relax and enjoy treatments in executive chairs, in private or semi-private spaces, all while watching TV and enjoying a complimentary beverage including coffee, tea, espresso, wine or beer.

“It’s the setting that makes men feel more comfortable getting the services they need and deserve,” says Marie. “We have more and more men enjoying facials, waxing, pedicures and hair color and scalp treatments.”

Clients range from young professionals and business entrepreneurs to mature retired executives and also include professional athletes and entertainers. Many clients bring their sons with them on Saturdays and share time together getting haircuts, manicures, pedicures and shoeshines. Memberships to Dieci Uomo that include unlimited haircuts, express manicures and shoeshines are available.

Dieci Uomo’s most popular services include the pedicure and hot shave. The hot shave, not typically offered in salons, is relaxing and revitalizing at the same time. 70

Fighting Foods Controlling Inflammation Through Diet By Julie Jacobs

Inflammation—while we typically think of it as the pain and discomfort that ensues after injury or infection, it actually serves as the body’s defense mechanism. When harm happens, white blood cells rush to the rescue to affected sites in the body to fight “intruders” like bacteria, viruses and other foreign matter. This process aims to protect us, but it also can cause soreness and swelling as the body heals. In other cases, such as with autoimmune diseases including arthritis and lupus, inflammation tends to be chronic and results when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.

Fortunately, more and more studies have demonstrated that good nutrition, fueled by omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, may help prevent, reduce and control inflammation. And since eating well is an easy practice that anyone can follow, why not direct your diet accordingly? Your body will thank you!

What to Limit or Exclude from Your Diet

Add to Your Meal Plan Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, substances that defuse the damaging effects on cells caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Antioxidants include polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Among many other veggies and fruits, they can be found abundantly in: • cherries—chock full of anthocyanins that can help relieve pain. • mushrooms—containing a plethora of minerals and vitamins such as selenium, riboflavin, niacin, copper and pantothenic acid (a B vitamin). • hot peppers—filled with vitamin C and flavonoids.

Kale 72

Suburban Essex

Mushrooms Also recommended are leafy greens like kale and spinach and dark berries like cranberries and blueberries. Some herbs and spices contain inflammation-fighting antioxidants and nutrients, too. Studies have pointed to the efficacy of cinnamon, rosemary, ginger and turmeric in pain relief. Omega-3 fatty acids can have a positive impact on inflammation as well. They help to hinder the production of enzymes that contribute to joint and muscle pain, and have been shown to significantly decrease the discomfort of such conditions as neuropathy, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Oily fish, from salmon, mackerel and trout to anchovies, sardines and herring, are great sources of omega-3s. So too are soy-based foods, flaxseed and nuts, particularly walnuts and pecans. Other foods that ease inflammation include beans, dark chocolate, red wine and green tea. And while extra virgin olive oil does not contain omega-3s, it is rich in omega-9 fatty acids, which also can help decrease inflammation.

Winter 2014

To further control inflammation, avoid omega-6 fatty acids, present in salad dressings, mayonnaise and vegetable and corn oils, along with many processed and packaged foods. Processed items also often include trans fats (which lengthen their shelf life but can have a negative effect on blood vessels and bring about inflammation) and sugar and refined grains (which can quickly raise blood-sugar levels, triggering body processes that can lead to inflammation). Saturated fats, animal fats and dairy products can spur an inflammatory response as well. Egg yolks and red meat, for example, are high in arachidonic acid, a natural fatty acid produced by the body that at increased levels contributes to inflammation. So curb your eating of these foods, along with processed meats, whole milk, butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. And, as with most conditions, restrict your alcohol intake and do not smoke. Any more than a drink or two daily, for instance, can prompt inflammation. If you are experiencing inflammation, particularly chronic inflammation, consult with your physician. He/she can advise you about the dietary additions or omissions that are best for you, and also suggest vitamin and/or herbal supplements that would be most helpful. For more information:,,,,,

UPCOMING EXHIBITS: February 8 - May 17. Come as You Are: Art of the 1990s This exhibition marks the first major American museum survey to examine the art of this pivotal decade in its historical context. Showcasing approximately 60 works by 45 artists, it includes installations, paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photography, video, and digital art. Come as You Are offers an overview of art made in the United States between 1989 and 2001—from the fall of the Berlin Wall to 9/11—and is organized around three principal themes: the so-called “identity politics” debates, the digital revolution, and globalization. Its title refers to the 1992 song by Nirvana (the quintessential 90s band, led by the quintessential 90s icon, Kurt Cobain); moreover, it speaks to the issues of identity that were complicated by the effects of digital technologies and global migration. The artists in the exhibition made their initial “point of entry” into the art historical conversation during the 1990s and reflect the increasingly heterogeneous nature of the art world during this time, when many women artists and artists of color attained unprecedented prominence. 212 Salon and Day Spa Offers a Pampering Experience

Guy and Donna LoSauro, owners of 212 Salon

uy and Donna LoSauro bring collectively almost six decades of salon experience to 212 Salon and Day Spa in Upper Montclair. With a partnership backed by a wealth of experience, it is no wonder that the LoSauros pride themselves on offering the very best in customer service. The husband and wife team have been in New Jersey working with clients and gaining experience for a very long time, both owning their own salons before coming together to create 212 Salon and Day Spa. Guy was the guy behind Guy Anthony Salon in Clifton for 40 years and Donna owned Pinnacle 2000 in Cedar Grove for more than 18 years. Being business owners in both Essex and Passaic counties certainly gave them some insight when they opened 212 Salon and Day Spa on Bellevue Avenue last November. “We provide excellent customer service from beginning to end,” the LoSauros explain. “Our everyday goal is to fulfill each

guest’s individual needs and expectations during their 212 Salon and Day Spa experience.” 212, which has just celebrated its one year anniversary this November, provides clients with an extensive menu of services, which includes hair cutting and coloring, manicures and pedicures, facials and body treatments, makeup and massage, “Formal Styling” and Wedding Parties. The LoSauros feel that their color specialists have helped them to gain popularity. “We thoroughly enjoy our upper Montclair location, its unique structure and placement in the uptown area,” they say. “Our location is very welcoming for walk-ins and drive-by guests.” 212’s staff includes front desk personnel, managers, nail technicians, estheticians, stylists and a colorist as well as a massage therapist and a number of apprentices. The LoSauros say that “individual personalities, overall everyday challenges, time management

and keeping a strong team” are among the most demanding tasks in salon ownership. While the challenges in spa ownership can be difficult at times, the LoSauros do not overlook the benefits of working in a very creative industry with a lot of positive thinking people. “We are able to create and share our creativity and individuality,” they say. “We are role models for all our future stylists and colorists.” As for the future, the LoSauros are excited about the possibilities at 212 Salon and Day Spa. “We hope to expand our salon and day spa, create more jobs and to continue to grow and stay as one of the top salons and day spas in New Jersey,” explain the LoSauros.

COOKING WITH CHEF COSTANTINO CAMMARANO By Rhonda L. Rivera, photos by Dan Epstein

“Costoletta di Agnelo Scottadita” Translation: A Mouth-Watering Rack of Lamb Dinner

ucina Calandra’s Executive Chef Costantino Cammarano’s love affair with food can be traced back to his Italian roots. Born in Salerno and trained at the Culinary Art Institute of Italy there, he opened his first restaurant in 1983 in Genova. However, America beckoned, so he left his restaurant in his brother’s capable hands and moved here nineteen years ago. Italy’s loss certainly is our gain. Chef Costantino always works with foods that are in season, creating gastronomic masterpieces that appeal to

diners’ eyes as well as their tastebuds. For him, flavor combined with presentation equals the perfect dish. Not limiting himself to any one area of Italy such as Sicily or Tuscany, Chef Costantino prepares every type of Italian fare, but always with a twist. His goals are to popularize classic Italian recipes and recover those in disuse. The Chef’s kitchen produces real, traditional Italian flavors that are “kicked up” for the 21st Century palate.

For example, the recipes provided by Chef Costantino for Suburban Essex readers were inspired by fresh ingredients of the holiday season, which happens to be his favorite food-wise due to their colors and robust flavors. “I want to show home cooks simple dishes that bring out the delicious flavors of the lamb, parsnips and acorn squash, ingredients that some may be afraid to try.” He says. “Have fun with these foods, cook with love and your family will share in the joy of your creations.”

Lamb with Honey Glaze Ingredients: 2 double rack/1 lb. (or 8 oz. per person) New Zealand Rack of Lamb Salt and pepper, to taste ¼ cup honey 1 /8 t ground cumin ¼ t ground black pepper 2T red vinegar 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1T extra virgin olive oil Directions: Preheat oven to 425ºF and turn on grill. Trim excess fat off the lamb and season with salt and pepper. Lay on the hottest part of the grill and sear, about 2 minutes on each side. (You can do this step in a sauté pan, with 1T olive oil.) Meanwhile, in a food processor, blend the honey, cumin, pepper, vinegar, thyme and olive oil to make the honey glaze. Baste the seared lamb with the glaze, and cook in the oven until done, approximately for 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare. Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes, then slice the chops between the bones. While the lamb is resting, turn on the broiler. Baste with more honey glaze and put under the broiler for 1 minute. Serves 2

Pomegranate Reduction Ingredients: 1 cup pomegranate juice 2t balsamic vinegar

4t packed light brown sugar Salt and pepper, optional

Directions: Place the pomegranate juice, brown sugar and balsamic vinegar in a small sauce pan and boil for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until reduced to about ¼ cup. Season to taste with salt and pepper, if desired. Presentation: Place the Acorn Squash and Parsnip Puree on the dish. Lean the lamb against the squash. For color, add asparagus spears. Drizzle the Pomegranate Reduction around the plate.

BONUS TIP: These sauce recipes are very versatile. Chef Costantino suggests pairing the delicious Honey Glaze with any wild meat, including venison and wild boar. He also recommends using the full-bodied Pomegranate Reduction with salmon. Winter 2014

homes were sold in October, down 11% from 216 in September, but up 8% compared with a year earlier. The average sales price, $484,600, is down 16% from the peak in July ($573,800) and is 3% lower than October, 2013 ($500,500). This reflects a shift toward the lower end of the market as only 4 homes sold for over $1MM compared with 18 in September. The median days on market for properties that sold jumped to 41 vs. 30 in September as fewer new properties came on the market.

The One You Feed…

o you ever wonder why attitude seems to be the one trait over all others that has the greatest impact on your achievements? Why is it that a positive attitude can accomplish so much? Why can it get you jobs or promotions, close deals, generate business, and bond relationships? How can it get you through the worst situations? Things happen in life and in business; many things happen over which you have no control. You can, however, control the way you deal with these situations. As the writer John Homer Miller once said, “You’re living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”

“When all is said and done, success without happiness is the worst kind of failure.” -Louis Binstock

attitudes. It’s our choice. One of my favorite stories that puts this all in perspective is a Cherokee legend about two wolves. An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil; he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good; he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Successful people learn this lesson early, and keep on learning it. They reinforce their positive attitudes by reading, gaining new information, setting goals, and achieving them. Most importantly, they surround themselves with other people who also believe in the power of attitude. Other people can lift you up or bring you down, so take extreme care in selecting the people with whom you surround yourself. If one of the great truths in life is “we become what we think about,” then we can have a positive or negative impact on our
