Astronaut Brothers Welcome Back Students

Photo: Courtesy of West Orange Public School District

A

s the school year began in the West Orange public school district on September 6, students were in for a special surprise! At the recently named Kelly Elementary, students resumed their learning with an inspiring message from West Orange’s hometown astronauts, twin brothers Mark and Scott Kelly. In the message, they welcomed back students and shared their own memories of the school: “Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful summer and if you are new to Kelly Elementary School it’s great to have you as part of the crew. Education is a mission and you need to be focused but we also want you to have fun too. We started in the 2nd grade in that same building in 1972. The school you attend today got us on a path that led to the stars. We got a great education there and you will too. So pay attention to your teachers. They know what they are doing. If you need extra help you should always ask. Best of luck for the 2018-2019 school year.”

Turtle Back Zoo Dedicates New Exhibit to Local Family

T

urtle Back Zoo is one of the most well-known attractions in Essex County, with attendees flocking to it year round to see the animals and participate in exciting programs. But many are unaware of the Zoo’s long-time relationship with a local family, to whom the new “Drill Family Flamingo Exhibit” is dedicated. The Drill family was involved with the construction of Turtle Back Zoo when it first opened. The West Orange family, which runs Drill Construction, has been involved with the Zoo in recent years, building various exhibits including the new Flamingo exhibit. To recognize the family, a bronze plaque was placed at the exhibit, with part of it reading: “The company has been there from the beginning, building the original Zoo when it opened in 1963 and continuing that relationship with the construction of the Penguin Coast, Komodo Dragon, Reticulated Python and Monkey Exhibits and the Tropical Currents Aquarium. They have returned to their “labor of love” once again, this time developing Turtle Back’s Flamingo Exhibit.” The new Drill Family Flamingo Exhibit is seasonal; the birds will come off exhibit when the temperature is 30 degrees, which includes wind chill.

Montclair Leads the Great American Read

T

his year, the Montclair Public Library is one of 50 libraries chosen to take part in the Great American Read (GAR). The GAR, an initiative from PBS, presents 100 of America’s best-loved novels, from classics to children’s books, in an eight-part television series. The library received funding for programming, and has screened each of the episodes the day after they air on television. Over the summer, the library held complementary programming that connected to themes from the book list, including “Who Am I?,” “Villians and Monsters,” and “Other Worlds.” Additional programming has included screenings of movies based on beloved books; and a “Treasure Island” pirate party which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. The library has further plans for community discussions on the books. Since book-lovers can vote for their favorites on the PBS website, Montclair Public Library will have their own vote to see Montclair’s top most-loved books.

Essex County Receives First-Ever Aaa Rating Photos courtesy of Essex County

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.’s handson approach to running government and conservative fiscal practices has resulted in Essex County earning its first-ever Aaa rating from Moody’s Investors Services.

DiVincenzo oversees all construction projects and regularly meets with contractors to get updates and ensure work it being done on time and on budget.

M

oody’s Investors Service has awarded Essex County their first-ever Aaa Stable bond rating. The recognition highlights the success of Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.’s ongoing fiscal initiatives that have improved the County’s bond status from just above the junk bond level to the highest rating given by Moody’s.

“This is great news for Essex County and validates all the hard work we have done for the past 16 years. I want to thank Moody’s for giving my administration the opportunity to prove ourselves and for listening to our story of transformation in Essex,” the Executive said. “We achieved the Aaa rating because of everyone working together–my Department and Division Directors, the Board of Freeholders, our Constitutional Officers, our county agencies and our 3,500 employees.” “The higher bond rating displays the trust and confidence that Wall Street has in Essex County’s finances and will help us get better interest rates and attract more prospective investors when we issue bonds,” DiVincenzo pointed out. “For our residents, having a Aaa rating makes living in Essex County more attractive and will enhance property values,” he said. Moody’s six-page report states the award was warranted because of DiVincenzo’s conservative budget practices and his initiatives to build a fund balance. “Over the past several years, management has materially improved the county’s finances which are now very healthy,” the report states. “Essex County’s strong management has implemented conservative, proactive budgeting, and has consciously chosen to rebuild reserves to healthier levels than had previously been the case,” it notes.

Under DiVincenzo’s leadership, recycling events have been expanded to include household hazardous waste, computers and electronics, paper shredding and used tires.

Moody’s Investors Service is a leading global provider of credit ratings, research, and risk analysis. A rating from Moody’s enables issuers to create timely, go-to-market debt strategies with the ability to capture wider investor focus and deeper liquidity options. The purpose of Moody’s ratings is to provide investors with a simple system of gradation by which future relative creditworthiness of securities may be gauged. There are nine symbols that are used to designate least credit risk to that denoting greatest credit risk: Aaa Aa A Baa Ba B Caa Ca C

Turn Your Kitchen & Bathroom Into an Ideal Space By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein Vincent Nigro

V

incent Nigro, co-owner of Ideal Tile in Fairfield, has been doing countertop and vanity installations since he was a young boy working beside his father, who owned the business. Now 42, Vincent has many years of experience in the industry. Along with his brother Marco, they also own Ideal Tile location in Edison.

According to Vincent, in recent years quartz products, such as Caesarstone and Silestone, have become more popular than granite. Quartz offers customers the stone look they desire, but it doesn’t have to be resealed every few years, it offers more colors, and is easier to care for. “It’s also stain resistant, which makes it more sanitary,” said Vincent.

The Fairfield location, which opened in 2013, has a 4000 square foot showroom that contains a vast assortment of products. Whether customers are looking for porcelain or ceramic for walls and floors, glass mosaics, or countertops made from engineered quartz or 100% natural stone such as granite and marble, they can find it here. They offer competitive pricing, and most of their products are imported from Italy due to the high quality they demand for their customers.

Due to his background in not only installation but fabrication, Vincent has the expertise to guide customers with their purchases. All Ideal Tile products are warrantied through the manufacturer, so if there is ever a problem he will call and get it taken care of in a timely manner. “We stand out for our services and quality of materials. Plus, we’ll go out of our way to make our customers happy; whatever it takes,” said Vincent. No matter the size of the project the turnaround time at Ideal Tile is fast. Once a customer chooses the material they want for a countertop or vanity, a template can be done within days. Installation then takes place about a week later. They take care of everything from start to finish, from the measurements and custom fabrication to the installation. They also work alongside with contractors to provide total project coordination, allowing for a seamless renovation for the homeowners.

Home, Beautiful Home Lisa Thomas Interiors knows home is where the heart is By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

L

isa Thomas has always been a designing woman. Even as a girl, she enjoyed rearranging household objects and painted her room “at least six different colors” as a teenager. Formerly an education law attorney, she’s changed careers and returned enthusiastically to her first love: interior design. Lisa Thomas Interiors offers a free consultation in the home and provides services such as color consultation, window treatment design and installation, design plan development, space and room planning, and furniture repurposing, acquisition, and restoration through decorative chalk painting. The firm also assists in the selection of lighting, flooring, accessories, fabrics, and art. Lisa works closely with contractors in the selection of new construction materials and oversees the management of each project. She also offers services on a smaller scale, such as rearranging existing furniture or updating a room. “I love the whole process,” says Lisa, explaining that she always starts by asking many questions to get a sense of how the client lives and for what purposes they want to use their space. “I like to ask for an ‘inspiration piece,’ maybe a fabric, or a painting or picture that the client loves, and use it to create color palettes unique to

each client’s tastes.” She also takes their budgets into account: “I pay close attention to my clients’ budgets and advise on how to get great looks for less.” Lisa creates Pinterest boards to share ideas with her clients to ensure that it is their personality that is expressed in their home and not her own. For the upcoming fall season, she helps create rooms that are more cozy and comfortable. “It’s nesting time,” she notes, “so I try to focus on warmer colors and fabrics that are soft to the touch–to create that feeling of sitting by a fire.”

Mark & Matt Russo

Preparing Your Home for Winter By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

W

hile freezing cold weather may be the last thing on our minds right now, fall is actually the perfect time to start to prepare your home for winter. Suburban Essex recently spoke with Mark Russo, Vice-President of Russo Bros. & Co. (known as the “Professors of Plumbing”), for suggestions on how best to do this.

Why should homeowners start now to prepare their home for winter? Fall is the best time, because you don’t want to wait until there is a winter-related emergency, such as a pipe bursting. We start to remind our clients at the end of the summer that it’s time to schedule fall maintenance before the winter weather sets in. This includes performing preventative maintenance on heating systems, as well as checking all outdoor water spigots to make sure they open and close properly.

What does heating maintenance include? We have a 21-point checklist, which begins with the operation and safety of the heating system. If a client has an old steam

system, we clean and flush out the water inside that has gotten dirty. For hot water baseboard, we make sure the system has adequate water pressure and there is no air in the baseboard. For newer forced-air systems, we change the filter and check the ducts for dust particles.

Do you have any suggestions for the exterior of the house? Homeowners should inspect any piping located in an exterior wall. If there are any air gaps, they need to be sealed–otherwise, cold air could get in and cause a draft that can result in a frozen pipe. Also, all outside water sources, like those for a pool or outdoor kitchen, should be turned off and drained. It is very important for homeowners to know where the main water shutoff is located. It is a good idea to shut it off if you will be going away for an extended period of time, such as a winter vacation. If a pipe freezes and bursts, it could cause a waterfall in the home.

Local Practice Receives Honorable Award from American Cancer Society

T

he Silverstrom Group, a cosmetic dental practice in Livingston, was named the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 15th Annual Jody A. Morrow Humanitarian Award. The award is given to those that exhibit the cancer survivor and ACS volunteer’s generous, compassionate and courageous nature. As supporters and advocates of the American Cancer Society, the Silverstrom Group was inspired to donate their medical expertise. Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom brought their philanthropic vision to life when they partnered with the ACS and established the Smiles for Life Award in 2014. The award rehabilitates mouth functionality and helps restore the survivor’s confidence through repairing and restoring their smile after the effects of cancer treatments. Each year, the recipient is given a cosmetic dental makeover and a highly anticipated “smile reveal” takes place at the American Cancer Society’s Diamond Ball. This year, for the first time in its five year history, the Smiles for Life Award was given to not one, but two brave recipients–sisters Josephine and Barbara. Doctors David and Gary Silverstrom were so touched by their story that they chose to give both of the sisters complete smile makeovers.

Dr. David Silverstrom and Dr. Gary Silverstrom

“The most important work we are ever able to do is give back to our community,” states co-founder Dr. Gary Silverstrom. “We are proud to partner with the American Cancer Society with the Smiles for Life Award. It is truly our honor to help restore the smiles of these brave survivors.”

t LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa®, people from all walks of life and with various ailments find support on their path to recovery. Led by Dr. De Hoyos, the clinic is unique in that all services aim to optimize each member’s outcome using a comprehensive, personalized approach to treat the affected areas of the body, increase health and wellness, and achieve the highest level of functional movement. Dr. John De Hoyos, DPT, CEO, employs a hands-on approach that combines manual therapy techniques with traditional physical therapy modalities. With over a decade of experience in pain management, he has developed a proactive approach to wellness that combines the science of physical therapy and his extensive experience in customer satisfaction. Dr. John sets functional goals with an individual care plan, all while staying

in constant contact with his patients. He strives to know and understand the individual, their health and fitness goals, and what outcomes they wish to see at the end of physical therapy. Dr. Denise Long, RN, ND, a Naturopathic Medical Doctor, supports the clinic’s mission with a primary focus in homeopathic medicine. Dr. Denise uses her expertise to assist those that have become “out of tune”–whether from illness or an overwhelming emotional situation–and have developed certain symptoms that should not be ignored. Says Dr. Denise, “The right homeopathic remedy will lead a person back to a better balance.” After learning about a patient’s physical and mental health during an initial appointment, she develops a naturopathic plan of care. Toby Cederbaum, LMT, one of LightPort’s massage therapists, brings over 30 years of experience to the clinic. Throughout her rewarding career, she has helped people reach their potential while guiding them towards a healthy lifestyle. Toby practices Thai yoga, lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, geriatric, trigger point therapy, prenatal, reiki, energy work & more. LightPort Physical Therapy & Spa® have an array of options on their road to wellness including Eating Awareness Training™, an exclusive four one-hour weekly meeting program taught by Toby Cederbaum that teaches you how to shift the responsibility for eating from your mind to your body, an opportunity to learn tools and techniques to experience the joy of living a diet-free life.

Greek & Traditional Fare with a Sweet Twist

F

ive years ago, local staple Golden Touch Diner got new owners, a facelift, a new menu and a new name–East Hanover Diner. Since then, the Karsos family, which has been in the diner business for over 40 years–with 20 of those years spent owning the Brookside Diner in Hanover–has been serving up delicious traditional diner fare that’s steeped in their Greek heritage. Descendants of Chios, Greece, brothers Mike, George and John Karsos and their families chose a blue and white theme for the eatery to honor the Greek flag. The curated menu includes gourmet salads, wraps, paninis and omelets and a wide variety of seafood and Greek dishes. It also includes many home-baked deserts including large cakes, pies, pastries, muffins, baklava and eight different types of cheesecake. The diner is open Sunday-Thursday from 6am to 1am and stays open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mezza Mediterranean Fuses the Fare of Israel, Italy, Morocco and More By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein

R

estaurateur Vincent Leone is proud of both the delicious food and the attractive design of Mezza Mediterranean, his local Mediterranean-fusion eatery. He is possibly even more proud of its accessibility. Says Leone, “We are not just for expense account meals and big dates. We are accessible any day of the week and for customers at any price point.” Open since February, Mezza Mediterranean is Leone’s second restaurant; Mezza Westwood has been thriving in Bergen County for the past five years. Both restaurants are open for lunch and dinner; the menu features dishes from Israel, Morocco and Tunisia, and much more. Leone notes that he also offers Lebanese, Greek, Turkish, and even Italian and South African dishes: “We have the whole world on one menu.” The salads and hummus bowls are popular lunchtime offerings; vegetarians appreciate the variety of meatless options. “We get a lot of business from customers looking for a quick and healthy lunch.” The most popular dinnertime dishes are definitely not just vegetarian; Leone cites the branzino, lamb shanks and short ribs pappardelle as customer favorites. Desserts include seasonal sorbets and gelati, baklava, chocolate souffle and zeppole-like ricotta fritters, the latter three made in-house. According to Leone, “Customers feel welcome here because we offer a beautiful atmosphere with a casual feel.”

Diamond Minds

It’s About Time By Barry Farber

Are there times when you say you have no time for physical training? I would like to share some ideas that can be incorporated into your daily routine so a day doesn’t go by without some type of exercise. There is a saying I like to use… ”Chop wood, it warms you twice.” Warms you while you’re chopping and then it warms you from the fire. You get two for one. Here are some examples: 1. How long does it take you to brush your teeth? One minute? Three minutes? Next time you brush your teeth I’d like you to stand in a horse stance while you’re brushing your teeth. It’s a great way to improve strength and stability in your legs while you improve your posture.

advantage of having my hands free for holding a metal bar.

4. Convert every room to an instant gym. I’ve set up my office and my home so that most of the rooms have several ways to workout while I’m in that room or just passing by. I have all types of weights, pull-up bars and weighted weapons hanging on the wall for immediate use. I’m a little extreme but this method has many benefits: This makes it interesting by having so many different workouts at my fingertips. I also don’t get bored of doing the same thing all the time.

2. When you’re waiting for a train or even taking a shower (carefully) see how long you can stand on one foot. Terrific way to maintain one’s balance and equilibrium. We need that no matter what age. 3. I have a small but heavy chair that I can use for core exercises in a horse stance and then add weights to my arms for additional resistance. These rings provide the

Out of sight...out of mind. By surrounding yourself with many exercise options you tend to do it more often. I make a game out if it. If I have to go to another room and the pull-up bar separates the rooms I can’t enter without a minimum of 5 pull-ups or a long stretch. That’s a whopping 6 seconds. The real key to this is being creative with everything around you and keeping disciplined with a method for continuing the activity. There is no one way. Going to the gym an hour a day is also an amazing way to keep fit. It’s about time.

“A person who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in every action.” —Samurai Maxim
