Laughter Yoga for Fertility M
C Y
Researchers in Israel followed 229M Y women and found that a 15 minuteY visit from a trained “medical CMclown” immediately after embryo transfer in-CM MY creased the pregnancy rate to 36%,MY CY compared with 20% for women whose embryo transfer was CMYcome-CY dy free. So how might laughter help CMY K fertility? Perhaps by stimulating the relaxation response. When peopleK are stressed they tend to take shallow breaths. Extending the exhale which is exactly what laughter is; has a profound effect on blood chemistry, laughter stimulates beta-endoprhins, our feel-good chemicals. Interestingly, these are similar benefits to those believed to result from acupuncture treatment that is also associated with improved success of IVF cycles. Making Homes Safer & Smarter By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
A
nderson Electric Corp. in Verona has been providing an array of electrical services to Northern New Jersey residents for more than 25 years. They offer 200-amp service upgrades, generator installation/maintenance, and smart home setups. George Anderson, owner, describes some of the popular services below:
What are popular electrical services that you offer? We do a lot of knob and wiring remediation in many of the older homes in our area. The older wiring system is problematic because it is not grounded and has many unseen wiring splices within the walls of the homes. Many insurance companies will not insure homes with this system. Also, a home with knob & tube wiring may be more difficult to sell. We also do many 200-amp service upgrades. The electrical system is like the trunk of a tree with branches stemming from it. For today’s electrical needs, the proper branches are needed to supply increasing electrical demands. A 200-amp service provides a large “trunk” so that many “branches” can be installed to make your electrical system run smoothly and safely.
How can we make our homes smarter? For a smart home setup, you first need to choose an Assistant: Alexa (Amazon), Google Home, or Siri (Apple). After choosing an Assistant, we will need to pair it with other smart controls such as smart switches or smart appliance controls. When the Assistant is paired in a network of smart devices, you can control light in areas for security, climate control (heating and air conditioning), and various appliances. You can control many of these items by voice commands in the home, or certain lighting by mobile phone apps when away from home. Smart homes are energy efficient and save you money.
What is one important electrical fact that everyone should know? I recommend a yearly electrical maintenance evaluation. The damage caused by neglect and not maintaining your electrical system properly can result in repairs and become far costlier than a simple annual maintenance check to address small issues in an electrical system before they become major problems. Electrical codes change every three years. New and improved safety devices such as Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI), help
George Anderson
prevent fires and are a great way to upgrade your electrical system to make it safer and prevent bigger issues from occurring. With an annual evaluation, we identify safety issues early on and recommend the best protection using the best new safety devices available.
Anderson Electric Corp. has won the Gold Medal in the Suburban Essex Best of Essex Contest the last 3 years in a row for their excellent reputation and service with customers in the area.

The Benefits of a Bilingual Education Opening Up a WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES for Children By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein
H
udsonWay Immersion School (HWIS) has been a pioneer in language immersion since 2005. Inspired to have her children learn Mandarin and connect with their Chinese heritage, Sharon Huang, HWIS Founder and CEO, began a preschool program (formerly known as Bilingual Buds) in the basement of her home with a handful of students. Sharon soon discovered many other parents who wanted early second language exposure for their children, thus relocating the school to Summit in 2007. Since then the school has expanded from a preschool Mandarin program to offering the choice of a Mandarin or Spanish immersion education for ages 2.5 through grade 5.
An immersion education provides content instruction in language arts, math, science and social studies primarily in a second language, such as Mandarin or Spanish and English. Through the program, students become bilingual and biliterate at a young age. Although HWIS utilizes the NJ State curriculum as a guide, students typically achieve above this standard. “It’s really a very unique program that you can’t get at this time at a public school or other independent schools in the area,” says Sharon. “Students are getting an excellent general education shown by high scores on standardized tests–while they are becoming bilingual and biliterate in a second language, which is increasingly what children need in the 21st century to compete with students all around the world.”.
All HWIS teachers are native speakers specially trained in immersion education. There is also a Leadership Team which has 70 plus years of combined experience in immersion education. The director, Elizabeth Willaum, has over 40 years alone. HWIS relocated to Stirling in June 2018 to offer the student body amenities that rival that of other private schools, and provide room for growth so that more students can develop the skills needed in the 21st century. Parents want their children to learn another language for a variety of reasons. “They know in tomorrow’s world having more than one language is going to open up all kinds of opportunities,” she stated. “We believe that ‘Bilingual students become brilliant adults.’”

Over 850 Children Shop Cost-Free at the NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store
T
he 10th Annual NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store (B2SS) brought grins all around on Sunday, July 29th as hundreds of children went shopping at a one-day pop-up store designed to help economically disadvantaged children in Essex County. This year’s event was held at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston. The children shopped for brand new clothing, school supplies and personal care items, encouraging a well-equipped and confident start to the new school year. The day kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony for dignitaries and supporters of the store led by Summit resident Lesley Greenstein, NCJW/ Essex President. B2SS co-chairs Andrea Mintz and Stacey Laken of Livingston, and Karen Cherins of West Orange, joined with dignitaries to cut the ribbon.
Volunteer personal shopper Ayesha Aly Ahmed of West Orange helps a young shopper select new clothes.
This little girl loves the NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store as she shops with a volunteer personal shopper Noreen Punia of Livingston.
Each year the Back 2 School Store is supported by grants and generous financial contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations, enabling the children to “shop” cost-free but leave with million-dollar smiles!
A young shopper excitedly shows off her colorful new shirt.

All Pro Health Helps Patients with Integrated Approach Maintain Your Active Lifestyle with One-on-One, Multi-faceted Rehabilitation By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo by Dan Epstein

f you’ve suffered any kind of chronic pain or injury, you’ve seen the array of treatment options out there. But how do you choose what path is right for you? At All Pro Health, you don’t have to. By integrating four specialties in one practice—physical therapy, chiropractic, yoga and acupuncture—All Pro Health can offer patients the perfect treatment plan in a boutique environment. “We integrate our services, which means you see more than one practitioner every time you come through,” said Dr. Todd Schragen, who is All Pro Health’s owner and chiropractor. “It’s all one-on-one. You’ll never be pushed off to do exercises on your own, you’re always being instructed. ” The treatment plans are designed by all of the different practitioners, who sit down and discuss the patient’s progress, how the plan should evolve, and how to meet the goals of the patient. In the case of triathletes, for example, their goal may be to compete in a race at a certain time of the year—All Pro Health will design a plan with that goal in mind. Each of the service areas provides benefits that complement one another. In addition, All Pro Health offers patients the latest technologies and treatments, including cold laser, NormaTec compression therapy, cryotherapy and active release techniques. Scheduling an appointment at All Pro Health is easy, with paperwork available to fill out online before coming in. “This allows us to do an evaluation and treatment on the same day to provide immediate relief,” said Dr. Schragen. Patients of all ages and ailments are welcome at All Pro Health. In addition to pain- or injury-related reasons for coming into All Pro Health, Dr. Schragen and team encourage people to come in proactively to develop a wellness program. “We’ll teach them how to take care of themselves. They can come back every four to six weeks and evolve their treatment plans, or reach whatever goal they want to reach.”
Dr. Todd Schragen “I’m extremely passionate about what I do. I’m a very active person myself,” said Dr. Schragen. “We realized that keeping things really simple and accessible is what makes people get better.” Follow All Pro Health on Instagram @allprohealth.

SPORTS INJURIES and How to Avoid Them
W
ith the dawning of a new school year comes after-school practices and weekend games. Across northern New Jersey, young athletes are leaving the lazy days of summer behind and getting back into the swing of things. As they do, it’s important to keep in mind some fundamentals about sports and safety.
“An increase in activity can bring with it an increase in injury,” says Eric Mirsky, MD, the chair of the orthopedics department at Summit Medical Group.
• Make sure you’re in proper physical condition before you begin to play
“Whether you’re on the field, the court, in the gym or in the pool, injuries are far from inevitable,” adds David Abrutyn, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Summit Medical Group. So, to greatly decrease your chance of being injured—no matter what sport or activity you’re participating in—follow these simple tips:
• Stop your activity if you experience pain
• Always perform a proper warm up before beginning your sport or activity • Drink water, especially when exercising or playing sports outdoors David Abrutyn, MD
Eric Mirsky, MD
• Gradually ramp up your sports training
September 2018
• Rest when you need to
• Utilize proper, safe techniques when playing a sport • Wear the proper protective equipment If you have sustained a sports injury, make an appointment with one of their 50 specialists at one of 23 locations throughout northern and central New Jersey.

STEP UP Your Slumber & BOOST Your Well-Being SLEEP AND WEIGHT During sleep, the body secretes all kinds of hormones, two of which are connected to hunger: leptin, which helps monitor energy stored in cells and in turn controls appetite and metabolism, and ghrelin, which triggers hunger. Studies have indicated that an insufficient amount of sleep causes leptin levels to decline and ghrelin levels to rise. The result is not only a greater urge to eat, but also to indulge in caloriedense, high-carb foods. Over time, this cycle can lead to weight gain, and in some cases, contribute to obesity. SLEEP AND DIABETES Research has shown that chronic sleep deprivation can alter the body’s ability to secrete insulin and process glucose, potentially to the levels associated with type-2 diabetes. In one investigation, participants had their blood sugar tested when their sleep deficiency was greatest and were found to take significantly longer than normal (by as much as 40 percent) to regulate it after a high-carb meal. Also discovered were higher blood levels of the hormone cortisol, which is suspected of causing insulin resistance in older adults. SLEEP AND HEART HEALTH When we sleep, heart

rate and blood pressure typically lower to allow the cardiovascular system to rest. Lack of sleep compromises these functions, leading to high blood pressure—a major risk factor for heart disease—and other cardiac problems. Findings from studies conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston revealed an 82 percent higher risk of heart attack among subjects who slept five or less hours nightly, and a 30 percent higher risk for those who slept only six.
HOW TO SLEEP WELL Your sleeping environment is key to good slumber, so make sure your bed and bedding are comfortable and that your bedroom is quiet, cool and dark. Keep to a set routine and hour for bedtime. Also, stay away from alcoholic, sugary and caffeinated drinks and avoid exercising within a few hours of going to bed. Should you awaken in the middle of the night and are unable to fall back asleep, think relaxing thoughts and do not watch the clock. If after 30 minutes you are still up, get out of bed and try doing soothing activities, like reading or listening to music.

early everyone has experienced it—the steady discomfort that can severely curtail mobility and interfere with daily life. While most occurrences are acute and last from only a few days to a few weeks, others are chronic and can take much longer to resolve themselves. They typically result from sudden trauma or continuous stress on the spine. Whatever the degree, back pain left untreated can lead to more serious conditions. And longterm back pain without any definitive origin can signal an underlying health problem and should be evaluated by a physician.

Regularly engaging in low-impact exercises like swimming and walking can strengthen back muscles and increase flexibility. Yoga can be particularly helpful, and stretching in general is highly recommended before physical activity to reduce the risk of injury. Daily stretching for just a few minutes in

New Smile, Enhanced Quality of Life, in Just One Day! Modern Dental Implant Technology Improves Overall Health By Martta Kelly, photo by Dan Epstein
D
ental implants, one of the biggest technological advancements in dentistry, have changed the lives of countless people for more than 40 years. Today’s technology, however, has improved the implant procedure tremendously, allowing most patients to go home with new teeth in just one day.
supports them. Implants also decrease wrinkles caused by missing bone and tooth structure, helping patients look younger.
Dr. Joseph M. DalBon, founder of the New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry, has more than 25 years of experience in restoring dental implants. He also completed a mini-residency program in dental implants from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Along with a team of top surgeons, he uses CBCT technology, along with intraoral scanning, to precisely coordinate the implant procedure from start to finish, resulting in a predictable, functional, and esthetic result every time.
Get a Long-Lasting Smile: The All-On-4 dental implant procedure creates a permanent set of teeth with a non-removable implant-supported retained bridge. Dental implants never have to be removed and teeth can last a lifetime.
“Teeth- In-A-Day or All-On-Four procedures allow patients to have failing teeth removed and a new implant-supported denture placed in one day without ever having to appear in public with missing teeth,” Dr. DalBon says. “Patients experience a dramatic improvement in chewing ability, teeth stability, and overall comfort right away.” Other benefits of an implant-supported denture include: Improve Appearance: The All-On-Four procedure helps preserve the jawbone and prevent further deterioration of the facial structure associated with missing teeth and a lack of the root system that
Enjoy Favorite Foods Again: Overall eating habits will improve and patients will be able to enjoy their favorite foods again.
Enhanced Overall Quality of Life: Patients will have greater comfort and confidence when smiling, speaking, and eating. This procedure, he adds, helps create a healthier mouth and a healthier body by helping reduce the chance for periodontal disease, a bacteria-induced chronic infection and inflammatory disease. “Periodontal disease has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases,” he says. “Since dental implants restore your mouth to a more natural state, they may help fend off periodontal disease.”

One of the newest featured specialties on his menu is the classic Steak Diane, prepared for guests at tableside. His contemporary spin on this once-popular mid-century classic is an exciting experience that appeals to all the senses —the sight of the Tomahawk Steak, the smell of the mustard, the whoosh of the flambe. The fact that it’s happening right at your table along with some personal and intimate moments with the chef, creates a very special dining event. Bahor loves the of history at The Manor, and under this new chef, it’s a place to have a truly singular dining experience. “Once here explore the grounds, enjoy the serene ambiance, the personalized service,” says Bahor. “The Manor is a place to feel welcome”.

The Manor Steak Diane Sauce The Manor Steak Diane is a magnificent Tomahawk cut that’s grilled to perfection, and boned and sliced tableside by Chef Haris. He’s generously shared his recipe for the sauce, which we believe would be a terrific compliment to almost any steak. He says: “Just season with kosher salt, fresh ground pepper, and garlic oil. Then grill to desired temperature.”
Ingredients 1 tablespoon unsalted herb butter 1 small shallot, minced 1 garlic clove, minced ¼ pound assorted wild mushrooms, sliced ¼ inch thick ¼ cup Cognac or other brandy 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard ¼ cup heavy cream ½ cup veal demiglace Maldon sea salt and freshly ground pepper
Add unsalted herb butter (brown just a little) Add the shallot and garlic to the skillet and cook over moderate heat, stirring, until fragrant, about 20 seconds. Add the mushrooms, season with maldon sea salt and fresh ground pepper and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Lower the heat; add the Cognac and carefully flambé. When the flames die down, add the mustard and veal demiglace and stir over moderate heat for 1 minute. Whisk in the cream to finish the sauce. Let simmer for 1 min. Pour the sauce over the steak.

Diamond Minds
INCOMING… By Barry Farber
T
here are great benefits from being aware of the opportunities that lie within difficulties. Anytime we push ourselves into new territories or push our limits both physically and mentally, we will encounter obstacles, no’s, setbacks, and barriers. The real intelligence lies in understanding the incoming data by adjusting, learning and sometimes moving on. Here are a few ways to deal with incoming obstacles effectively: 1. Strong belief system. Do you believe your idea or position has true value? That will go a long way when faced with objections and challenges. I’m approached by companies that want me to place their products and services into national accounts, or inventors that want me to market their inventions or athletes and entertainers that want me to help them breakthrough. If I don’t see a strong value in the offer it becomes very difficult to market. But when the added value is there it gives you the reasons to keep moving forward against the obstacles. Then tenacity and persistence are easier to enforce and have other benefits attached. People see that extra enthusiasm and effort as a positive energy, especially when backed by an attitude that you have faith behind your mission.
2. The counter is where the strategy lives. In martial arts there is a great advantage to not striking first. The greatest fighters can see an attack coming before the movement begins. The ability to step aside or move into the attack allows you to control their energy or use it against them. In business I’ve seen people try to force their ideas or products on to someone first and it can backfire. When people see someone more interested in their own gains than understanding the key needs and goals of the client then more objections surface. By understanding not just your strengths but really tuning into the other persons goals it allows you to reduce the obstacles moving forward. I welcome the objections or adversity. I sometimes let them pass right by or address them head on. In martial arts there is a saying, “what’s hard dies, what is soft lives.” Stay flexible and learn how to blend with your opponent. When change comes your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.

3. Constant preparation and action builds confidence and clarity. Massive action combined with deep research on your strategy has a powerful effect. When you study your targets, goals or anything tied into your objectives it gives you a calming feeling and internal confidence that helps you stand strong against any incoming obstacles. The next time you take on a challenge that might seem overwhelming try to seek out people who have the experience to be a mentor. Then read everything you can about the situation. We have at our fingertips a world of resources on the internet from audio, video and reading materials. But just as powerful as the research and preparation can be, nothing takes the place of learning from our actions. The work will teach you how to do it. I can’t say it any simpler. My focus over the years with each project has been this... to learn from my actions and act from my learning. One without the other suffers, but together provide a powerful strategy to deal with any of those incoming obstacles. “We can remove all obstacles through quiet perseverance.” — Chinese Proverb
