Julio Angel, the owner and Master Designer at the studio, is a graduate of the Learning Institute for Beauty Sciences in New York City. With his years of experience and gorgeous salon, he has been able to offer clients the expertise of a NYC salon without the commute or the often-outrageous prices.

Each key is unique and carries a message like HOPE, STRENGTH, DREAM or COURAGE. When the wearer of the key encounters someone else who needs the message on the key, they give it away and then send us the story of their key being paid forward.

“Clients working with our small business have the buying power of the large established company that’s behind us. Unlike a store, we have no loyalties to any particular manufacturer and, in fact, work with almost limitless vendors in order to make the right choices for our clients’ taste and price range.” Paula is ready to help clients with any size project. “No project is too small or too big.” Call 973-803-2126 today for a complimentary in-home consultation.

Build Your Dream Kitchen with a Designer’s Help

Paul Cestari and Mike Sandaal

hether remodeling a galley kitchen or an expansive room with a large, center island, working with a designer avoids the pitfalls of doit-yourself home improvement projects.

Cestari notes, “Designing a kitchen is about wants versus needs. You have to make choices. There are always concessions.” He helps clients think through their wish lists and suggests practical solutions.

Paul Cestari, a sales project consultant with Aspen Kitchen & Bath, believes it is critical to build trust with a client. “This facilitates communication and results in a clearer understanding of what the client wants to achieve,” he says. “It’s important to nail down functionality versus look. Both have to be incorporated into the design.”

It is common for designers to work exclusively with one manufacturer for cabinetry. At Aspen Kitchen & Bath, Fieldstone Cabinetry, a leading manufacturer of affordable, custom cabinetry, is the vendor of choice. Michael Sandaal, Territory Manager for Sales and Marketing says, “We offer a wide selection of styles, woods, finishes and colors. Fieldstone stands behind its craftsmanship and offers a lifetime warranty.”

Aspen Kitchen & Bath is a one-stop shop for design, cabinetry, fixtures and craftsmanship. With professional designers and licensed contractors, Aspen Kitchen strives to give each project the value of a lifetime. Of Aspen’s staff, Cestari says, “their eye for color, attention to detail and knowledge of the industry make them a great addition to your home project.” Budget is at the top of the list for many clients. Cestari cautions that it can be hard to shop based on price because designing a kitchen is a complicated process; it cannot be negotiated the way one shops for a car. However, if a client has a fixed budget, Aspen Kitchen will work to stay within it.

Adds Cestari, “If quality is important to you, choose the cabinet first and the rest follows.” Aspen Kitchen & Bath manages each project from beginning to end. All project managers are knowledgeable about town building codes and have professional relationships with town inspectors. There are safety issues to be considered such as electrical and gas lines. They supervise the different crews that play a crucial role in the project. “The worst thing you can do is take this on yourself,” cautions Sandaal. “It’s

like doing open heart surgery in a client’s home.” Industry changes have made it easier to design a dream kitchen. Cestari points to virtual animation computer software that allows a client to visualize what the room will look like. Sandaal says strides in the manufacturing process have given Fieldstone the ability to customize a kitchen full of individual cabinets and color in six to eight weeks. To trend or not is another consideration. Cestari suggests a timeless look, one that will survive design trends and match the architectural components of the home. Sandaal says color trends are cyclical. The color du jour? Gray! He advises, “Unless you can afford to upgrade your kitchen every five years, stay away from trends.” Both Cestari and Sandaal favor a client/designer partnership. “People know their homes,” says Cestari. “My job is to listen and to gently probe as to why our customers want or don’t want something. I’m there to help realize a dream.”

Back-to-School Tips to Keep Kids Healthy & Safe

ack-to-school prep means more than a trip to the office supply store. Help kids stay strong, healthy and safe this school year by putting wellness front and center. “Thinking about back-to-school now can help parents keep kids on track for a healthy start to school,” says Dr. Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. With that in mind, Hassink recommends taking the following steps.

Ease into the School Schedule Ease the back-to-school transition by keeping bedtime and meals scheduled and adjusting timing as school approaches. If your child has been going to bed later than usual, begin adjusting his or her bedtime earlier. Depending on age, children and teens need between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep nightly. For young children, arranging to see their new classroom and meet their new teacher before school starts can calm first day jitters. Go over the school schedule with your child, including how she will get to school and what the plans are for after school time.

Schedule a Pediatric Visit The back-to-school season is a good time for scheduling a pediatric exam. Create a list of items you want to discuss with your child’s pediatrician. This list should include ensuring your child is upto-date on vaccinations, a crucial part of preventive care. It’s a good idea to build a medical home with a pediatrician by sticking with one doctor or medical practice throughout childhood and adolescence. The doctor will be better informed of your child’s medical history and aware of any emerging problems.

Suburban Essex

Beyond medical testing, pediatricians are well-equipped to counsel patients and parents on emotional and social issues, as well as issues that often crop up during adolescence, such as smoking, drugs, drinking, sexual activity and depression. “Parents can ask a pediatrician about anything related to the care of their child or teen, medical or not,” says Dr Hassink. “The visit can be a good way to bring up these issues.”

Consider Sports Sports can foster confidence, cooperation and healthy habits, and the start of the school year brings many opportunities to join various programs. Hydration, nutrition and proper conditioning are important for any sport, especially those with intense training. Schedule a sports physical with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s overall health and how to prevent injuries.

September 2015

Talk Safety If your child will be walking to school, travel the route with him to assess its safety. Find out about traffic patterns and crossing guards. Teach your child safety rules like looking both ways. If possible, have your child commute with an older sibling or neighbor. If your child will be riding a bike or skateboard, be sure they wear a helmet. Review basic rules for safer riding. Bus riders should also be mindful of safety rules, like remaining in one’s seat and listening to the driver. More back-to-school tips can be found at As a parent, you can take steps to help ensure your children are prepared for a happy, healthy school year. —StatePoint

The POWER of PREVENTION Screenings help identify risk of stroke, heart disease

ou’ve likely heard the adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Patients looking to live a long and healthy life know taking preventive steps now is necessary to ward off many diseases in the future. This is especially true with cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death among adults.

Suburban Essex

September 2015

Understanding cardiovascular disease For middle-age and mature adults, pro-active steps toward prevention should be done to fight against atherosclerosis, or plaque build-up in the arteries, the main cause of cardiovascular disease. Early detection, improved health behavior and diet changes now can increase wellness benefits later. When not detected, more advanced stages of the disease can lead to more serious problems, such as stroke or heart attack. One affordable, easy and non-invasive option for patients looking to stay on the road to wellness is cardiovascular screening, often recommended for adults age 55 and older. This type of simple ultrasound procedure allows doctors to see inside a patient’s arteries, and along with doctor checkups, can sniff out certain health issues before they become more serious. These vascular screenings can be a beneficial choice for patients in the right age range and with key risk factors (and screening data shows that more than 70 percent of

the population over age 55 have two or more of these risk factors before their screening). Patients can then work with their doctors to put preventive strategies in place.

New studies prove screening’s benefit A growing body of research supports this logical approach to fight disease. A 40-year study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed community-based integrated programming improved the health of residents and reduced hospitalization. Similarly, a study in South Korea may have set the standard for the future. There, a nationwide study found that health screenings were linked to lower rates of cardiovascular disease and helped patients better identify heartrelated conditions and events. To best prevent cardiovascular disease one must find it early, before the person is symptomatic, so the individual can be more accurately placed in the proper risk category. That is where ultrasound screening plays its special role. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, looked at ultrasound testing to identify blockages in carotid (neck) arteries in people who were healthy but at-risk, and found that detection of “subclinical” disease improved overall risk prediction. Vascular screening may also motivate healthier behaviors in those screened because people get to “see” inside their body and understand their true health status. Life Line Screening examined a sample of American adults who underwent screenings. The research showed that those screened engaged in healthier behaviors. In fact, 76 percent of participants reported improved diets, 60 percent increased the amount of exercise and 73 percent reported maintenance of a healthy weight or weight loss following the screening. Plastic Surgery and Skin Care in a Private, State-of-the-Art Facility

r. Paul LoVerme loves plastic surgery. In fact, the secondgeneration plastic surgeon and founder of The LoVerme Center for Plastic Surgery in Verona has been practicing it for the last thirty years. “It’s such a diverse specialty,” he explains. “Every person is unique and every circumstance is different.” For Dr. LoVerme and his staff it is important to remain patient-focused. “I like to spend time with patients,” he states, “talking to them, educating them, and setting expectations.” Technology plays a big role in that education. With TouchMD, patients can watch videos of what their procedure entails beforehand, and with cutting-edge programs like Vectra, they can see 3-D images of themselves and how they will likely look after a procedure. “This is great for rhinoplasty and facial augmentation with fillers,” the surgeon explains. “By utilizing the Vectra program it enables us to set expectations and really deliver on results. The more time you spend preoperatively, the happier the patient is going to be post-operatively.” And happy patients are what it’s all about for Dr. LoVerme. The most common procedures the board-certified plastic surgeon performs at his facility are breast augmentations, liposuction, and facelifts, but his practice extends beyond traditional cosmetic procedures. He explains, “I also do breast reconstructive surgery as well as reconstruction for skin cancer patients.” His patients also include young children that come to his practice with lacerations that need sutures performed by a plastic surgeon. Additionally, Dr. LoVerme has traveled to impoverished countries to perform reconstructive surgery on children with cleft lips and cleft palates. According to Dr. Loverme, the big trends in plastic surgery right now are non-invasive procedures. These include BOTOX (which lasts about four months), and injectable fillers like Juvederm and Voluma (which last about a year), as well as longer-lasting skin-tightening procedures like Ultherapy, which he describes as “a micro-focused ultrasonic device that tightens the skin and the foundation layer beneath the skin.”

Dr. Paul LoVerme, MD, F.A.C.S

Another popular technique is CoolSculpting, which permanently reduces fat by 25% in a particular area by freezing it. “The nice thing about CoolSculpting,” he states, “is that there’s no down time, so you can go back to whatever you were doing before as soon as you walk out of the office.” An integral part of the LoVerme Center is the Radiance Medical Spa, which focuses on results-oriented skin care. Procedures performed by the spa’s expertly trained estheticians include chemical peels, medically-oriented facials, and acne treatments. They also do micro-needling which; Dr. LoVerme explains, “is a procedure where we take a Rejuvapen with micro-fine needles that penetrate the skin...and ultimately are then filled with collagen.” He continues by stating that “it is a great option for hard-to-treat areas like lip lines. You may need three to five treatments but there’s no downtime, and it really does a nice job without surgery, without injections, and without pain.” “Skin care is vital for people who want to delay having plastic surgery,” says Dr. LoVerme. And, for clients who have already had work done, he adds, “it’s an important part of maintaining what we’ve done either surgically or non-invasively.” The LoVerme Center, featuring a state-of-the-art operating room equipped to hospital standards, is one of only 2000 facilities in the United Stated accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). Dr. LoVerme serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the AAAASF whose main focus is patient safety.

name stuck and became associated with artists using bold color in an abstract manner. The exhibit’s 48 works include various media, such as painting, photography, and collage. Runs through December 18. Academy Square Galleries, 33 Plymouth St., Montclair. 973-744-1818. (continued on page 66)

At Josephsen Family Dental, Sometimes it is the dentistry that our patients DON’T need of which we’re most proud. Our new patient had perfectly healthy teeth that were very discolored from medications they had required as a child. For all of their adult life, they had been told the only option was to cover the teeth with crowns, veneers, or bonding - all at significant cost, and all requiring at least some drilling of otherwise strong and intact natural tooth structure.

Prior to Kör Whitening

Then they came to see us at Josephsen Family Dental. The result? No drilling, no removal of tooth structure, no man-made dentistry artificially covering the teeth. Just their natural teeth, whitened conservatively and preventively by Dr. Josephsen.

After Kör Whitening

For our patient, our specialized non-invasive whitening was all the dentistry that they needed for a life-changing, confident smile.

Of course, every patient’s dentistry is unique, and when needed, we can always provide you with some terrific restorative options and materials. We always welcome new patients, children and families of all ages. Whether a simple checkup or the very best in comprehensive treatment,

Schooling Parents & Students on

n recent years, it has become a common sight at bus stops and schools to see students struggling with backpacks. Weighed down by heavy textbooks, children carry their backpacks from class to class throughout the school day. Even kindergarteners can be seen towing bags that are almost as big as their five-yearold bodies. Now that school has begun, Andrea Buccino, D.C., C.C.S.P., certified chiropractic sports physician in Cedar Grove, offers suggestions to help lighten the load when choosing and using a new backpack.

What should a student look for when selecting a backpack? Depending on age, students tend to go for a “fun choice” such as their favorite movie character hero or princess. Parents need to set some limits on the purchase. The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to the child’s body and the back should be padded. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing the child to lean forward when walking. Bigger is not necessarily

better. The more room there is in a backpack, the more a child will carry, and the heavier the backpack will be.

What should be the maximum safe weight of a backpack? Make sure the child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause the child to bend forward in Dr. Andrea Buccino an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders. A recent study in child’s teacher. Ask if the child is able to leave Italy showed that what we allow our the heaviest books at school, and bring home children to carry would be equivalent to a 176 only lighter handout materials or workbooks. pound man carrying 39 pounds on his back Some schools (more so in urban areas) are and shoulders. eliminating lockers, forcing students to carry around their books all day. This excess What are the injuries that baggage should be avoided when possible.

students can sustain by improper weight or use?

When a bag is too heavy, the student can complain of neck, shoulder, and lower back pain. Their young, developing muscles are not up for the challenge of this burden. Some students drag their backpacks on wheels like a small suitcase. Although the use of backpacks on wheels has become popular in recent years, certain medical groups are recommending that they be used cautiously and on a limited basis by only those students who are not physically able to carry a backpack. Some school districts have banned the use because they clutter hallways, resulting in dangerous trips and falls.

What can the schools do to support students in using backpacks safely? Jenna Barkley & Dr. Andrea Buccino

Can students do particular exercises to strengthen the muscles needed to carry backpacks? Being active helps keep muscles and joints healthy. Having a strong core helps keep the lower muscles supported and tight, like a belt around your lower back and pelvis. Chiropractors are licensed and trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and can also prescribe exercises designed to help children develop strong muscles.

The Miracle of THAVMA

aking the steps, or the elevator, to the second floor of the Livingston Town Center retail stores belie the wonderful dining experience that is THAVMA Mediterranean Grill. Perched atop the building yet hidden away, the restaurant allows fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations to shine. On a balmy August evening, we took a seat on the large patio and immediately enjoyed the ambiance created by Mediterranean instrumental music. Sangria Iced Tea with fresh Jersey blueberries, mint, and citrus fruit ($3.95) set the stage for a delightful meal of seasonal specialties and year-round delicacies. For starters, not to be missed are the THAVMA Chips ($9.90), very thinly sliced zucchini sparingly battered in Panko bread crumbs, lightly fried, and sprinkled with cheese. In a word, they are addictive. Proprietor Alex Diamantopoulos takes pride in having worked with Chef Paul Lustbader in perfecting this recipe so that they taste as delicious in the restaurant as at home for take-out. The mouthwatering crab cake appetizer ($13) includes a sizeable amount of fresh lump crab surrounded by crispy shredded fillo dough, accompanied by a tasty chive oil. The Spinach Pie ($8) is light and crunchy, perfect to pick up and eat. The very popular Village Salad ($9.70) contains chopped tomato and cucumber with red onions, feta and Kalamata olives in a delightful

vinaigrette. Diners can top the salad with a variety of items including Falafel ($5), with its wonderful mixture of crispy on the outside and creamy inside. When figs are in season, order the Stuffed California Figs ($10). These warm bits of heaven are filled with walnuts and feta, sitting atop a red wine reduction and aromatic oils. Diamantopoulos notes that the season for figs is quickly closing, so rush to THAVMA and enjoy them before it is too late. Shish Kebob platters are always a popular main course selection. The seasonings on the Angus Steak kebob ($19) are delightful. Both rare and medium orders were grilled perfectly. Served with warm pita, country pilaf and Tzatziki, the dish is superb. In the mood for fish? THAVMA does not disappoint. The seasonal Cioppino ($27) is a crab stew featuring jumbo scallops, shrimp, and crab in a savory broth of tomato, corn, garlic, and fennel. It is served with garlic baguette, perfect for soaking up the deliciousness. If you have a hankering for burgers, try the Lamb Burger ($17). Starting with a halfpound of ground lamb, this juicy burger features crumbled feta, tomato relish, and buffalo onion straws on a brioche bun with a side of sweet potato fries. The clever use of mint in the relish brightens the entire burger. Make sure to save some room for dessert, featuring local and fresh items that change seasonally. The Butterscotch Bread Pudding ($6) is a warm buttery delight, made with croissants and served on a bed of peaches. The Blueberry Loukomades ($6) are crispy doughnuts with sautéed blueberries, and are surprisingly not very sweet. The New York Cheesecake ($6) is light and creamy. Last, but certainly not least, the Baklava Bomb ($8) features vanilla ice cream encircled with delicious baklava that makes your mouth happy. Diamantopoulos’ main goal, he says, is to “take care of our customers.” By serving such high quality, creatively presented and unique Greek dishes, THAVMA (Greek for “miracle”) certainly does.

e all deal with conflicts in some form or another at work, in our relationships, and during our daily interactions with others. These conflicts will always be present for those in leadership positions or anyone striving for high achievement. Here are several ways to deal with conflicts while reducing the stress that comes with them: 1. Avoid anger and greed and replace them with concentration and awareness. To have a grounded, focused and calm demeanor in the face of difficulty is admired and extremely effective. The next time you find yourself in any type of conflict, listen to what the other person is saying. Ask about his or her position in order to better understand it. Sometimes there can simply be a communication problem that can be dissolved by letting the other person talk. When we let anger and greed become our emotions, the conflict increases with both our opponent and ourselves.

“The real and most dangerous opponents we face are fear, anger, confusion, doubt, and despair. If we overcome those enemies that attack us from within, we can attain a true victory over any attack from without.” -Morihei Ueshiba 2. Breathe. In every martial art, discipline breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.

Try this breathing method recommended by Sensei Greg Barry Farber O’Connor: “Breath in through your nose and let it settle in your belly by doing deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing—allowing the diaphragm to move up and down for fuller capacity breathing. Once you let your breath settle to your lower belly relax your shoulders then allow your lower belly to expand and “breathe like a baby.” 3. Put the situation in perspective. When you really look at the reason behind the argument, is it worth it? How many times have you said to yourself, “I can’t believe what we used to argue about.” Look at the bigger picture and realize it can be better to forget it and move on. I find great satisfaction when researching and interviewing people who have faced extreme adversity because it helps to put my own life in perspective. No matter what you’re going through ask yourself if this conflict is worth pursuing or better to be put to rest. 4. Become comfortable in your own skin. Having confidence in who you are will help you to deal with people without getting defensive. Sometimes we spend too much time with people who actually enjoy creating conflicts and thrive on negativity. Learn to separate real conflicts from negative attitudes and people who want to bring you down. Some of the greatest decisions are not just picking the right mentors to surround yourself with, but also moving away from the people who don’t provide any value. Famous World War II admiral, William “Bull” Halsey, said, “Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly, and its spines crumble. All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them but confront them.”
