What is Your Favorite Returning TV Show this Fall, and Why do You Like it?

VOL. 22 NO. 7

The Good Wife. Julianna Marguelies is such an incredible strong actor. She does a great job on the show. And the storyline is always something intriguing.

Downtown Abbey because I like the characters, I like the plots… I like the ways it’s developed. It keeps me intrigued. —Maryann Farrell, Montclair

—Kate Stanford, Montclair

Boardwalk Empire because it gives you the face of what it was like in Atlantic City during prohibition. And I love Steve Buscemi.

Perception. Because it’s based on psychology and mental illness and that’s what I studied in college.

—Alex Marino, Montclair

—Patricia Lambert, Montclair

Scandal, because it has a little bit of everything in it. Politics, intrigue, murder.

Fox Sunday Football, because I am a huge football fan. —Frank Aroneo, West Orange

—Iris Dyson, Montclair

Queen Latifa. She has a good chemistry between herself and the people she interviews. There’s always fun, laughter.

Shameless, because it’s about a poor family in Chicago and I really like shows about another side of city life that people don’t really see.

—Aya Okeowo, Montclair

Local Artist Commissioned to Construct Mosaic King Snake

t the Essex County Turtleback Zoo in West Orange, children have been paying a visit to a forty-foot long snake that was recently constructed by awardwinning artist Donna Conklin King of Roseland. The black, white and red snake, which sits in front of the entrance to the new education center, is entirely made up of tiny mosaic tiles. Donna Conklin King with Elvis, the mosaic snake

Millington Architectural Firm Celebrates 26 Years

elebrating 26 year in business, WESKetch Architecture of Millington, which began in 1988 as a construction remodeling company, has grown into the robust creative and reputable Architectural design firm it is today. This family owned business, founded by William Kaufman, is a full design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling, custom new homes and estates, with a particular expertise in second homes or vacation properties. WESKetch pride themselves in developing extraordinary solutions to ordinary design and construction related problems. “We try to treat each project as if it is our last project and the one in which our life’s work will be judged” states Kaufman. The firm has the experience to resolve any construction related project with a creative solution. “At the origin of the profession, Architects were builders. They managed every aspect of the construction and were craftsman themselves chiseling stone and carving mantels. This is the way it was then, and with WESKetch, the way it is now,” says Kaufman.

According to King, “the snake was conceived by landscape Architect Michael Piga to entertain guests of the zoo. The snake is just large enough for children sit and play on.” She is thrilled that so many people are seeing her artwork daily, and hopes that she will get the opportunity to construct a mosaic turtle as well. King has been a practicing artist for over twenty years and Mosaic art came to her in 2007 when she was a visiting artist at a school. She was given the task of fixing an unattractive concrete planter and states that “the only solution was to have kids make small pictures with vitreous glass tiles and attach them to the surface.” She fell in love with the process and has been taking commissions and teaching the process ever since, along with making drawings and prints. Donna Conklin King is available for murals, school projects and private commissions, and can be contacted at 973-768-1123 or

The company also has a reason for their extraordinary name—“NJ Law requires that Architectural firms have the word Architecture or the name of the Principal in the business name. The firms’ name, WESKetch, is derived from the Founder & Principal, William Emil Schmidt Kaufman, whose initials are W.E.S.K, he then added “etch” which translates to “we sketch.” WESKetch is located at 1932 Long Hill Road in Millington, New Jersey. CASA Training for Child Advocates

Chiropractic Center Opens in Livingston

ASA for Children of Essex County – Court Appointed Special Advocates, is seeking additional volunteers to become advocates for children in foster care. There are still many children waiting for a CASA advocate to be assigned to their case. CASA will be conducting two volunteer training classes this fall. The 33 hour training course will be offered in September and again in November.

r. Grunstein of Grunstein Family Chiropractic Center has recently moved his practice from Clearwater, Florida to Livingston, New Jersey. Dr. Grunstein, who was born and raised in the Caldwell area, stated that: “after years of operating my chiropractic practice in Florida, while simultaneously serving as the chiropractor for a Major League Baseball team, The Toronto Blue Jays, I felt it was time for me to come home. Opening right in the heart of Livingston has fulfilled my dream of bringing my practice back where I belong.”

CASA Advocates are volunteers appointed by the Family Court to gather information about a child’s needs while in foster care and to represent a “child’s voice in court.” For the almost 2,200 foster children in Essex County, their time in out-of-home placement can often be lessened and their chances for trauma recovery greater through the presence of trained CASA Child Advocates. Every day, ordinary people make a difference in the lives of the county’s most vulnerable citizens by becoming a CASA volunteer. In order to be considered for the volunteer training, interested applicants need to complete an application, an interview and background check. Contact CASA Volunteer Director, Carol Costello, to learn how you can become a child’s advocate at 973-648-3351, or visit the website at

Upon visiting the center, a patient will receive a thirty-minute evaluation of each joint of his or her spine in order to detect which area needs specialized attention during subsequent visits. The key to Dr. Grunstein’s chiropractic approach is “taking the proper amount of time with each patient, allowing for a detailed analysis and treatment of short or long term back pain, neck pain or headaches.” With gentle methods for pain relief, patients appreciate the fact that Dr. Grunstein is “totally committed to helping them get better in the fewest number of treatments possible.” Grunstein Family Chiropractic is located at 290 S. Livingston Avenue. For more information, visit their website at www.grunstein or call 973-640-0760 to schedule an appointment.

6th Annual Back 2 School Store A Huge Success By Angela Sabarese, Photos Courtesy of NCJW/Essex

ith the end of summer comes the annual necessity for parents to begin shopping for new school supplies, clothing and other items to ensure their children are prepared for the next step in their educational careers. Unfortunately, this inevitable reality can become a source of stress and anxiety for economically disadvantaged families. Many children must begin their new school year without the clothes, school supplies or personal care necessities that would provide them with increased selfesteem and confidence. However, thanks to the National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex), hundreds of economically disadvantaged children will start their school year with a smile, new clothes and new supplies—all for free. On August 3, NCJW/Essex held its 6th Annual Back 2 School Store (B2SS), where over 650 children participated in a one-day

event to shop in a 4,000- squarefoot department store setting donated by Congregation B’Nai Shalom. The event was not open to the public; the children were identified by 35 local agencies that participate in the program. When the children enter the store, the fun really begins as each child picks out a new full outfit, complete with a shirt, A young pants, undergarments and a shopper tries pair of sneakers and socks. Each on his new child also chooses a winter coat, winter coat hat and gloves. “Clothes! I get new clothes too?!” exclaimed Volunteer Erica one young girl as she walked into the Silverman of store with a huge grin. The children Livingston were encouraged to make their own with shopper selections and try them on in dressing Tommy rooms set up just for them.

During the hour the children had with their personal shoppers, their parents or guardians had the chance to take advantage of free health screenings, learn about healthcare, career and educational opportunities. “We first heard about the idea of a Back 2 School Store from the St. Louis section of NCJW and we thought it was a terrific way to engage our volunteers in something incredibly worthwhile,” said Cathy Silverman, Executive Director of NCJW/Essex. “Knowing the community that we live in, we felt that the Back 2 School Store could reach a broader population, making a difference for those in need in suburban Essex County as well as others in more urban parts of the county. Each time I see the faces of the children at the Back 2 School Store, I know that this program is improving the lives of women, children and families in immeasurabale ways.” Since its start in 2009, B2SS has benefited over 2,300 children and has received help from over 1,800 volunteers. Volunteers were

able to get to know many amazing children while making an enormous difference in their lives. “It was wonderful to see the children light up, given an opportunity they never imagined they could have in their circumstances,” said Leslie Lavinthal, a volunteer personal shopper and committee co-chair. “I was overwhelmed by what a rewarding and heartwarming experience it was to volunteer at this amazing event.” NCJW/Essex, founded in 1912, uses volunteerism and activism inspired by Jewish values in order to make a difference in the community, particularly for women, children and families. The organization has hundreds of active volunteers who help to fund their projects and work hands-on to assist hundreds of people in need in the Essex County area.

Prostate & Ovarian Cancers An Overview of Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment By Julie Jacobs

an or woman, none of us wants to hear the C-word. Awareness plays a big part in both prevention and favorable outcomes, so here we share a primer about prostate and ovarian cancers.

Each year more than 180,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately, the disease often grows slowly, is detected early before causing significant harm, and has a five-year survival rate of 100% when it is confined to the prostate. Still, prostate cancer can spread when left untreated, which is why regular screenings are important. Screening typically involves a rectal exam and a blood test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by cells in the prostate. More than The American Cancer Society recom180,000 men are mends an annual screening beginning at age 50, or age 40 if you are African diagnosed with American or have other risk factors prostate cancer such as a family history of the disease. every year. Both your physical exam and PSA level may warrant further evaluation, perhaps via a tissue biopsy. Symptoms such as frequent or difficult urination, painful urination or ejaculation, blood in the urine or semen, and/or pain or stiffness in the hips, back or thighs also may indicate a prostate problem. If you experience any of these symptoms, bring them to the attention of your doctor. Prostate cancer is highly treatable when found in its earliest stages. If it is found, imaging tests (ultrasound, CT or MRI) may help establish if the cancer has spread. Treatment may call for surgery to remove the cancer or the entire prostate, as well as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. In external beam radiation, pinpoint beams target and kill cancer cells; in brachytherapy, radioactive pellets are inserted directly into the prostate. Other treatment options include hormone therapy to shrink the cancer or slow its growth and cryotherapy to eradicate cancer cells by freezing them. There is even a vaccine that uses the body’s own immune cells to treat advanced prostate cancer. With erectile dysfunction as a side effect of many current treatments, researchers are continually developing and studying new approaches, from nerve repair during surgery to more precise radiation. The use of a high-intensity focused ultrasound to destroy cancer cells with heat is also being studied. On the prevention side, researchers are examining the genetics of prostate cancer to better understand risk and cell behavior and in turn design new drugs to avert the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 22,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed this year. While ovarian cancer may not be as prevalent as prostate cancer, it is more difficult to catch early and therefore much harder to treat. Just 19% of cases are found in the earliest stage, for which the five-year survival rate tops 90%. Much of the reason for late detection lies with the subtle symptoms associated with ovarian cancer, which may be why it is called “the silent killer.” Consult with your physician if you experience bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, a full feeling, and urination or gastrointestinal problems for more than three weeks. Other symptoms More than 2,000 to note are extreme fatigue and back ache. You might want to discuss your women are chances for developing ovarian cancer diagnosed with with your doctor, particularly if you ovarian cancer have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer and may carry the BRCA1 or every year. BRCA2 genes. Women who are over 55, obese, were never pregnant, take hormone replacement therapy and/or have a personal history of cancer face a higher risk as well. Abdominal and pelvic exams may lead to an ultrasound or a biopsy for a definitive diagnosis. You may also undergo a special blood test that measures the level of CA-125, a protein found more frequently in ovarian cancer cells than in normal cells. Treatment depends largely on the stage of the disease and can involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy or a combination of approaches. The good news is that researchers are developing new chemotherapy drugs, studying the use of targeted substances that spare normal tissue, and creating antibodies to specifically fight ovarian cancer cells. They are also establishing a national blood and tissue bank with samples from ovarian cancer patients that might enable enhanced screening methods for earlier detection. Researchers are also looking deeper into genetics as a means toward better preventive measures. What can you do to help keep your prostate or ovaries healthy? Though you may not have control over factors like age or family history, you can follow a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and limit your intake of alcohol, high-fat foods and processed meats. And you can go for regular screenings when the time comes.

T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine Launches Gluten-Free Menu

ince 2006, T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine in Upper Montclair has been preparing healthy, flavorful dishes, with even the most popular Chinese dishes recreated with health concerns in mind. Innovative is the best way to describe chef/owner Thomas C. Ma’s approach to Chinese cooking. The delectable dishes on the extensive menu are prepared with 21st century tastes and health concerns in mind. “All of our ingredients are fresh,” notes Ma. “We never use canned vegetables.” The restaurant is pleased to announce that they have developed a new menu that highlights a wide-range of gluten-free specialties, as well as added the ability to modify dishes to satisfy the requests of health-conscious customers. With the gluten-free food trend rising in the United States, Ma has spent a great deal of time researching ingredients and testing different cooking methods to ensure his specified dishes are 100% gluten-free and still taste great. Wheat-free soy sauce, starch-free marinades, wheat-free cornstarch and potato starch for frying are all new ingredients he now uses. All dishes are prepared and cooked with cholesterol and trans-fat free Canola oil, and can be steamed, grilled or plain sautéed with fresh garlic and ginger for a light and healthy dining experience.

▲ A vegetarian section of the menu features a tempting vegetable dish—Sauteed Broccoli with Tofu with a Fresh Garlic and Ginger sauce. ▼ A delectable house special is the Seafood Delight with Ginger & Scallion—lightly sauteed shrimp, scallop and fresh fish with ginger and scallion over a veggie bedding.

Finding Passion for What You Do Finding one’s passion is like mining for gemstones; it takes a lot of exploration to discover a rough stone that must be cut, shaped and faceted in order to reveal its brilliance and beauty. When a beautifully cut, multifaceted diamond is held up to the light, it works as a prism. The light is disbursed and broken up into the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Without the facets, the stone would have no “fire.” This fire, caused by the facets, is what makes the diamond so special and so valued. People, too, enhance their value and release their inner fire, or passion, when they become multifaceted. This is not to say that a person must be a Jack or Jill of all trades. It means that they must expose themselves to as much as possible, in as many areas as possible. It means keeping themselves open to new experiences, and it means having a respect and a passion for learning itself. Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey is a prime example of how a passion for learning can lead to success. Raised in a small town in Missouri where his father was a banker, Bradley was always interested in learning. In junior high, he would often study into the early morning hours. His mother was determined that he would be a well-rounded “gentleman.” She arranged for him to learn how to play the trumpet, the French horn

and the piano, sent him for swimming and golf lessons and saw that he learned how to ride a horse, how to type and how to box. Bradley feels that being exposed to so many different things throughout his childhood helped him to find his niche. He was able to try many different things and eliminate those areas in which he had little talent. An All-American at Princeton, Bradley went on to become an Olympic gold medalist as captain of the 1964 U.S. basketball team. He attended Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar, played pro basketball (including two NBA championships) and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1977. According to a Rolling Stone article, Bradley’s first action as Senator-elect was to poll “every knowledgeable source he could find and ask: ‘What does it take to do the job – very well?’” In this as in everything he undertakes, Bradley had two goals: to learn everything there was to learn about a particular endeavor—whether it was the sport of basketball or the game of politics–and then to do it extremely well.

Barry Farber Before I met Senator Bradley, I was amazed by all his accomplishments. During our meeting, I discovered that he was down earth, genuine and giving. I am now not only amazed at his accomplishments, I am also amazed at the person he has become as a result of his accomplishments. “You must have a certain pride in your work and your ability to do something well,” says Bradley—but for him, the greatest stimulation is the learning itself. “There is a great enjoyment in learning more about the world around you,” he says. “Learn more about how a city functions, or what goes into the defense budget, or how you actually organize a computer system or business. Learning how to do something has a real satisfaction built into it.” Everyone is capable of making a difference and achieving success—but it is the desire to learn and to keep the fire within oneself ever burning that makes an individual capable of accomplishing the discovery of their inner passions.

Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers to help them market their products and land more deals. He is the best-selling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold. His latest book is Success Secrets of Sales Superstars (Entrepreneur Press).
