O

n Tuesday, May 3, former New Jersey Governor Richard Codey joined university administrators to celebrate the designation of Montclair State University (MSU) as a “Stigma-Free” campus.

MSU is the second institution of higher education in the Garden State to join the Codey Fund for Mental Health’s Stigma-Free campaign, stated a university press release. Established by the former governor and his wife in 2012, the fund’s mission is to ensure that “compassionate, quality mental healthcare is accessible to everyone and that the stigma associated with mental illness is overcome through public awareness and education.” “Montclair State University has a longstanding commitment to the well-being of our students,” said Karen Pennington, Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life. “We have established programs and staff in place to support the mental health needs of our community. We believe that having the stigma free signs standing on campus will spark awareness and remind students that they’re not alone.” 10

Raising Awareness for Autism

S

ixteen-year-old Chatham resident Grace Rubacky participated, along with friends and family, in the Spring Lake 5 mile race held on Memorial Day—in the name of “Team Henry” and Autism Speaks. Before the race, Grace had sent a note out to supporters stating, “With having a brother, Henry, who is autistic, it really has had an impact on my life. Not only does Henry enjoy life, he puts a smile on everyone’s face. I want to be able to give back and help the millions of other families who are connected with autism as well.” Her father, Michael Rubacky, formerly of Upper Montclair and mother Annie, could not be prouder of the impact she is having on increasing the awareness of this disorder. The team is close to raising their goal $10,000 this year. Even though the race is over, the fight to help those with autism is not. Donations are always welcome by visiting Team Henry’s page: www.fundraise.autismspeaks.org/runforhenry. Autism Speaks is a leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

ant to take the road less traveled? Consider the challenge of learning a foreign language at The Language Institute. Established in 2002, the school offers courses in Italian, Spanish, French, Japanese, English as a Second Language, Mandarin, German, and American Sign Language. There are children’s programs and tutoring available. Adults can sign up for private, semi-private or small group classes. Translation services are available, too. All learners—from beginners with no previous knowledge of the language to lifelong, passionate language lovers—are welcome. Designed to accommodate the busy lives of the clients, flexible hours are offered during weekday business hours, evenings, and Saturday mornings. Phyllis Ignozza, the Institute’s director and a former high school world language teacher, started The Language Institute as an alternative to other language programs

in the community. “Our communicative approach sets us apart from other language programs. We emphasize proficiency through speaking with grammar as a secondary emphasis. We believe that a conversational, interactive approach is the best way to learn a language,” she says. The Language Institute’s teachers are native speakers or native-proficient in the languages they teach and hold state teaching certificates. This combination of language proficiency and effective methodology, she believes, is a major strength. In addition, the instructors teach about the culture of the languages studied. Remarks Ignozza, “This important cultural component is missing from many other language programs, especially from language learning software. Our instructors understand that language and culture are intertwined. The most effective language learning includes both.”

Language aficionado and Bloomfield resident Dina Fede says, “Learning a second language has always been on my bucket list. Beyond the normal methods typically used by language schools, Phyllis and the team at The Language Institute provide an atmosphere that fosters one’s ability to learn and most importantly speak a new language without fear. The classes are small, confortable and inviting. I have made progress as never before and am getting closer to my goal every week.” The Institute was a gold winner in the Best of Essex 2014 contest, sponsored by Suburban Essex magazine.

Choose Mitsubishi Ductless Cooling & Heating for Older Homes

O

lder homes have historically presented a big challenge for HVAC contractors. However, Mitsubishi ductless cooling/ heating systems are a great alternative to traditional systems because they don’t require the ductwork that is difficult to install in older construction, or homes without attics or adequate closet space to run ductwork. Mike DeJoseph, owner of Bloomfield Cooling, Heating & Electric notes that, “These compact systems focus on individual living spaces so they are more flexible, energy efficient, and easier to install.” The units can be mounted high or low on any wall, or on the floor.

to eight units can run off one compressor and the compressor is far quieter than its traditional counterparts.

Energy bills are lower because the units, hyper-zoned to a specific space, deliver better heating/cooling balance between rooms. Their inverter technology hardly draws any electrical current. Up

M

ature trees increase property value by as much as 10 percent, according to the U.S. Forest Service. But a tree can shift from asset to liability when branches, trunks or roots suffer an injury and threaten to cause property or personal damage. Insects and disease are also potential threats to valuable trees.

FOR US!

1. Renew Mulch. Two-to-three inches of organic mulch conserves water, reduces compaction and helps control weeds. It’s best placed in a ring that extends outward from the trunk at least 3-6 feet. 2. Be Cautious with Water. Unless there have been prolonged dry spells or exceptionally warm weather, most established trees may not need water until mid-to-late spring. 3. Protect Trunks. Make sure lawn mowers and weed eaters do not damage tree trunks by wrapping them with trunk protectors or surrounding the tree with a grass-free, mulched area. 4. Prune. Because pruning permanently changes a tree’s structure and appearance, you want to prune intentionally. Light pruning of small trees can improve structure and appearance, but be mindful of branch diameters to help guide your cuts. 5. Protect and Feed. Now is a good time to treat trees and shrubs susceptible to damage from insects and taking this opportunity to provide a nourishing slow-release fertilizer is also a good idea.

Refresh, Restore & Repair Your Health TIPS AND TRICKS FOR IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH FROM HEAD TO TOE

W

hen it comes to your overall health, taking simple steps to keep yourself in good shape is key. Take a step in the right direction and put your health first with some of these simple tips:

Keep Your Mind Sharp Research shows that you can keep cognitive function strong with mental stimulation. Completing crossword puzzles, reading or challenging yourself with brain games like Sudoku or Mah Jongg can help boost memory and brain power.

Help Repair Your Oral Health

Make Time for a Workout

Practicing proper oral hygiene and using the right tools are simple ways to improve your oral health. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes and flossing daily. Using the Colgate Total Daily Repair regimen is an easy way to ensure you’re taking better control of your oral care. Try Colgate Total Daily Repair Mouthwash, which helps kill bad breath germs while also helping to repair daily damage to teeth, and Colgate Total Daily Repair Toothpaste that helps repair early teeth and gum damage by re-mineralizing weakened enamel and helping prevent gingivitis, while freshening breath and whitening teeth.

Finding the motivation to hit the gym is the hardest part of working out, said blogger and Colgate Total influencer Kelly Tomlinson of Live Love Texas. Outside of the obvious health benefits of staying in shape, Tomlinson said she feels energized, strong and beautiful after a workout. If you make working out and taking care of yourself a priority, you can feel your best and also help set a good example for your children.

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet Research supports eating a well-balanced diet of vitamin and mineral-rich foods can be beneficial to your health. Opting to cook at home rather than going out to eat is an easy way to maintain those healthy eating habits. You can also try different cooking methods, such as steaming, modifying recipes to reduce sugar, salt and fat, to help manage and sustain your diet changes. You can also supplement a multivitamin if necessary.

Summer 2016

Practice Good Sleeping Habits The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Staying on a regular sleep schedule, keeping your sleep environment cool, dark and quiet, and avoiding napping for too long or too late in the day can help you make sure you’re getting the proper amount. With these simple tips and tricks, you can finally put you first, contributing to better overall health. Diamond MINDS A Conversation with

Grand Master Nan Lu

N

an Lu, OMD, Grand Master of Wu Ming Qigong, is the country’s foremost spiritual leader, practitioner and teacher of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). For over 20 years, his TCM World Foundation (www.tcmworld.org) has served as the country’s leading resource for body-mindspirit health. A New Jersey resident, he’s the author of Digesting the Universe: A Revolutionary Framework for Healthy Metabolism Function. BF: Explain the statement “When it comes to food, you are what you think?” NL: We all understand, “You are what you eat.” This perspective is actually the lowest level. Because food is energy, the highest perspective is, “You are what you think.” When we approach food like this, what is the meaning? Let me use the apple as an example. Most apples take at least five to six months to mature. During that time, they accumulate Qi (CHEE) or energy; otherwise, they wouldn’t grow. They accumulate Qi from sun, wind, rain, cold winter energy, hot summer heat and more. They have to cooperate with what is in their environment—including insects and birds. Energetically, this information of an apple’s cooperation with nature is encoded within the physical object we eat. It depends on how we want to think about the

apple—physically or energetically. Opening our consciousness and understanding of the apple’s interrelationships is the highest level of understanding. In today’s culture, we believe what we eat is the most important thing, but that’s not the whole truth. Everything in the body is interrelated. If your stomach, liver and kidney don’t cooperate well, your digestive system won’t have enough energy to process what you eat. Consequently, you won’t get the nutrition you need. Everybody is under stress; it’s the No.1 emotion that disrupts liver function. If your Liver functions poorly, your digestive system will be impaired. Everyone thinks they can take vitamins and supplements to stay healthy, but if the body can’t digest them, the result is expensive urine! BF: What can people do to change their thinking? NL:. Each of us is a child of the Universe—born with the wisdom to heal ourselves. Deep down we have to believe this is possible and to not immediately rely on outside factors. Most people search the internet for answers. I tell my patients to search their “innernet” (to look inside themselves) for real answers. Maintaining emotional balance is more effective than controlling eating patterns. Stress is a powerful vibration that affects liver function and prevents it from performing properly, including working with other organs to absorb nutrients. Today, 90% of illness and disease are

associated with liver dysfunction. While physical stress might come from actions performed on the job; emotional stress comes from having a demanding boss, constant deadlines, conflict with co-workers and more. Yes, exercise helps relieve stress, but it takes energy. The best way to alleviate stress is through deep breathing. Simply close your eyes so you can go within, in terms of conserving Qi or energy, it can be better than going to the gym. Taking a hot bath is also effective—a hot bath with classical music and a glass of champagne can lower stress well. —In our culture, Master Lu says the liver is the most important organ to keep in balance. And, excessive stress is the number one factor affecting whether it functions properly or disrupts the healthy functioning of other organs, especially those involved with digestion. —Food is a powerful healing ally and has been prescribed by TCM practitioners for millennia for many conditions. TCM understands that the healing properties of foods and herbs go far beyond physical, chemical and nutritional properties.
