Physician Adds New Technology to Practice
D
r. Scott Spiro, a board-certified plastic surgeon, of Spiro Plastic Surgery in West Orange, will be adding the use of Coolsculpting to his practice. Coolsculpting, a tool that can be utilized to eliminate pockets of fat—especially in the belly pooch area—that are difficult or impossible to eliminate through exercise alone, will be available in Dr. Spiro’s office this month. According to Dr. Spiro, the procedure works by freezing fat cells through the process of applying cooling panels to the skin. “Coolsculpting is an in-office procedure that does not require anesthesia or surgery,” Dr. Spiro explains. “Freezing of the subcutaneous fat cells results in the slow absorption of the fat over 3-8 weeks, resulting in a noticeable permanent decrease in the fatty area.” The procedure can be done in the office, and does not require any anesthesia or recovery time. According to Dr. Spiro, the ideal candidate is an otherwise healthy adult who has visible excess fat around the abdomen, flanks and hips. “Rarely have I come across such promising science that simply and reproducibly achieves such targeted success,” he concludes. Dr. Spiro’s office is located at 101 Old Short Road, Suite 510 in West Orange. He can be reached by calling 973-736-5907. For more information on his practice or Coolsculpting, please visit www.drspiro.com or www.coolsculpting.com respectively.

10 Years of Fabulous Fabric
airfield’s Fabric Factory Outlet marks its 10th anniversary in business this month. Founded in 2003, the business offers custom window treatments, bedding, cornices, and more, as well as discounts on fabric purchased directly from high-end labels. The business, which has been growing steadily for the past decade, now offers an on-site upholstery workroom staffed with five skilled employees. Owner Daniel Silva also employs a staff of three highly trained design/sales employees, all with rich backgrounds and experience in interior design or textile design. “My staff are very competent professionals,” states Silva. “We are not one of the run-of-the-mill fabric stores where someone just cuts the fabric for you. We are all knowledgeable and know how to put fabrics, patterns and colors together.” In honor of the anniversary, Silva is encouraging customers to call to find out about the many current specials. The business is located at 390 Fairfield Road in Fairfield, and can be reached by calling 973-439-0333 or by visiting www.fabricfactory outlet.net.

Business Owner Keeps Husband’s Dream Alive
A
fter many years in the advertising business, Liz and Marty Bratman opened their dream business, Rover Ranch and Spa, a doggie day care, boarding and grooming center in 2005. Four months after achieving this dream, Marty was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. Since that day, his wife, Liz, has worked to keep the business—which spent two years in development before coming to fruition—a success. Spurred by Ms. Bratman and her sons’ love of dogs and her passion for keeping her husband’s long-sought-after dream a reality, and with the help of a group of employees as dedicated to quality service as was her late husband, Rover Ranch continues to grow each day. “This business is truly a testament to our vision of providing a safe, fun atmosphere where ‘dogs can be dogs,’” Bratman states. “We are dedicated to providing the very best care possible, and our mission is to make sure every dog has the time of his/ her life while staying here are the Ranch. We’re not happy unless all tails are wagging!” Rover Ranch, which offers day care, grooming and boarding for dogs of all breeds and sizes, occupies a 5,000-square foot facility in Fairfield, and includes a pet boutique featuring pet food, treats and specialty merchandise. Rover Ranch and Spa is located at 16 Passaic Avenue, Unit 1, in Fairfield. For more information or to reserve a space for your pet, please visit www.roverranchandspa.com or call 973-439-WOOF (9663).

n Thursday, June 6, 2013, Luna Stage will host its 20th Anniversary Celebration with a tribute to founder and artistic director Jane Mandel. After 20 years, Mandel will be stepping down at the end of the 2012-2013 season to spend time with her family and pursue alternate creative avenues, though she will remain associated with the theatre as an artist and advisor. The 20th Anniversary Celebration and Tribute will be held at the Club at Orange Lawn in South Orange. There will also be a fundraiser supporting Luna Stage, and the evening will feature cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and performances. enhAnce your outdoor experience with modern design And Amenities
N
ow that the weather is reliably warm and sunny, spending time outdoors is especially appealing. Garden Staters are lucky to be near both beaches and cities, but sometimes, to quote a famous movie, there’s no place like home. For the times that you just want to enjoy your backyard, we consulted several backyard experts on ways to enhance the experience. According to Ken Reilly, a manager at Pelican Shops in Morris Plains, “People will be spending more time at home this summer because the shore was devastated by Hurricane Sandy, so they are really doing up their backyards.” Reilly has seen increased demand for outdoor refrigerators, sinks, wet bars and grills: “Our customers are essentially building outdoor kitchens for themselves.”
Another element of modern bAckyArd design is contemporary tiling. For outdoor fountains… use porcelAin or glAss tiles.
sound quality outdoors.” Another element of modern backyard design is contemporary tiling. According to Frank Matarazzo, owner of Mediterranean Tile in Fairfield and Bernardsville, there are now tiles in a number of styles and materials which are suitable for outdoor kitchens. For instance, he recommends porcelain for a contemporary look and travertine (a form of limestone) for a rustic look. For outdoor fountains, Matarazzo generally uses porcelain or glass tiles; he even carries tiles handpainted with patterns and motifs of the American Southwest and Southern Europe. Creating a backyard kitchen or music/media center can be a relatively simple matter. Adding a pool house or cabana is another proposition, but one that may appeal to those with the time, space and funds. According to Don Distasio Jr., Sales and Design Manager at Showcase Kitchen & Bath in Bloomfield, “For this customer, we are almost turning the backyard into a resort.” For the initial consultation, Distasio and his team will typically meet with the client at the client’s home for anywhere from 45-90 minutes to discuss what the client wants: Washer/dryer? Kitchenette? Changing rooms? About a week later, the Showroom staff will show the client a preliminary proposal. Assuming the client wants to go ahead with the project, a retainer fee will be charged and a final proposal will be submitted to the client. Distasio cautions that this process alone can take up to four weeks; architectural plans and permitting take several more. The actual construction can take up to three months; it is clearly too late for anyone hoping to build a pool house this summer. But for homeowners considering such a big step, Showcase simplifies the process by doing all the work itself. Notes Distasio: “We are a true design/ build firm, from planning and design to product selection and final construction, our design team does it all under one roof.” s
Regarding patio furniture, Reilly notes that sectional seating and cantilevered umbrellas are both “really hot” this year. Probably as a result of Hurricane Sandy-inflicted damage, he also has seen a move away from glass- to aluminum-topped, or even stone, patio tables. In addition to the trend toward backyard-as-kitchen, there is also a major move toward backyard-as-media center. According to Gary Kendelski, Home Audio Systems General Manager at Samm Sound in West Caldwell, “There was only one manufacturer of outdoor televisions a few years ago; now there are several. They need to be wired underground back to a safe, waterproof environment, since cable boxes are not waterproof, but the televisions themselves and the remote controls are completely waterproof.” Even more impressive, according to Kendelski, is the improvement in outdoor audio equipment. For those who want their music to have a deep, rumbling “big sound,” Samm Sound now sells underground subwoofers (loudspeakers which augment bass frequencies). A tiny speaker is connected to the subwoofer, eliminating the need for large outdoor speakers. At the same time, however, Kendelski is seeing an increase in the variety of options available for above-ground speakers that resemble landscape lighting. Whichever type of audio equipment a customer chooses, he courtesy of mediterranean tile enthuses, “It is now possible to get indoor

hen living in the Big Apple and working as an actor and a writer, Amy Simon knew how to nurture her creative side. Since moving to West Orange 22 years ago to raise her family, Simon has remained active in both the community and the arts, founding the Valley Community Watch and serving on the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for three years, culminating with the founding of the New Jersey Arts Incubator (NJAI) in 2006. “Originally I was looking to develop an arts space for the Valley neighborhood to create a place where people could continue to work as artists and bring arts to an underdeveloped area of West Orange,” says Simon. “There is a movement in the community for ‘place making’ in the arts.”

West Orange,” Berman says. “Let’s bring fine and performing arts to our community with free- and low-cost opportunities. That’s what OSPAC was built for. NJAI will use this beautiful property and get the arts up to OSPAC for all.” The 2013 summer season at OSPAC is already filled, beginning with the June 21 summer solstice celebration. There will be something for everyone throughout the summer and into September, including a production of “Into the Woods,” opening on July 19, as well as live bands, movie nights and an arts play festival for special needs children. The OSPAC season will close on September 21 with an NJAI fundraiser showcasing the talent of the West Orange public schools’ performing arts programs and the West Orange community. “We invite Essex County and all New Jersey residents to visit NJAI at OSPAC often and help us create and celebrate all kinds of art up on the mountain at OSPAC,” states Berman. 25TH ANNUAL
T
he founder of PUDSTERS, Michael Sobon’s wife, Elena, sits quietly behind the scenes with Puddy, the restaurant team mascot, as the finishing touches are put on the best new dining experience possible.
As the PUDSTERS team works feverishly to open the restaurant, we don’t want to discuss Michael, nor CFO Patrick O’Brien, or Dennis Gann and George Haas, who are working tirelessly to make this new burger concept possible. This story is being written about Elena, and not only Elena, but all of the wives who have courageously supported their husbands while standing in the background. Michael’s real strength and courage comes from the inspiration and support from his wife Elena, and of course, Puddy their bulldog. As Sobon states, “I work crazy hours and rarely get home before 10 p.m. most evenings, and I can depend on Elena always having a meal on the table with a smile on her face and not a complaint in sight when I walk through the door. She’s my rock and doesn’t get enough credit for the role she plays in all of this.” PUDSTERS is being designed for today’s families, and the glue that holds every great family together is a great woman. We are creating something special here at PUDSTERS, driven by strong family values and the desire for a delicious, old-fashioned burger served in amazing surroundings with the best possible service at an affordable price. We are so excited in anticipation of the upcoming opening of our beautiful new restaurant to the public and are anxious for the opportunity to share and enjoy what we have built with all of the local families. Look forward to seeing you soon!

A LOOk At ChiLdren’s eye heALth For children, good vision involves so much more than simply seeing well. Vision disorders are in fact the numberone handicapping condition among them. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), upward of 94% of children with reading difficulties have reduced visual skills, and approximately 20% of schoolaged children may be affected to some degree by learning-related vision disorders.
V
isual problems affecting eye focus, alignment and movement, for instance, often go undetected and can make learning hard and lead to other eye problems. Furthermore, children struggling with their vision often are misdiagnosed as having aDD/aDHD and are academically misplaced in the classroom. The american academy of Ophthalmology recommends that school-age children have a complete medical eye exam by their fourth birthday, and routine eye exams approximately every two years thereafter. In addition to the pediatrician’s office, eye exams can be obtained through community centers, school programs, health fairs, and volunteer organizations accessible through the website preventblindness.org. Parents can play a key role in uncovering eye disorders by keeping a watch on their kids for such signs as wandering or crossed eyes, squinting and disinterest in reading. The good news is that many sight deficiencies can be corrected through vision therapy—individualized, nonsurgical treatment that is typically administered by an optometrist. Short-term and goal-oriented, vision therapy addresses a child’s entire visual-motor system, which includes the brain’s ability to process what the eyes see. It incorporates the use of such tools as prisms, filters, lenses and com-

Protect Their Eyes When Outdoors Just as it’s important for adults to wear sunglasses, so too is it for kids, especially in the summer months when there are more hours of sunlight. even when it’s cloudy or not very sunny, there are still uV rays that can damage the eyes. excessive and/or direct exposure to the sun can lead to an array of conditions that include cataracts, photokeratitis (painful sunburn of the cornea, commonly known as snow blindness) and eye cancer. Sunglasses not only protect the eyes from the sun, but from wind and debris as well. They also enable the eyes to better and more quickly adapt to changes in light between the outdoors and indoors. When shopping for eyeglasses, look for a label indicating that they offer uV blockage. and purchase them from a department or drugstore, as sunglasses bought from street vendors may not offer enough or any protection from harmful uV rays. s For more inFormation: allaboutvision.com, aoa.org, carefair.com, ezinearticles.com, healthcarecolleges.net, livestrong.com, mayoclinic.org, nia.nih.gov, webmd.com

lace one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach, and take a big breath. Which hand moved more? If you have a tendency to suck in your stomach, then most likely it was the hand on your chest. While sucking in your stomach may make you feel thinner, it leads to an inefficient way of breathing—through the chest. If you’re breathing properly you should feel your stomach inflate as you inhale, and deflate as you exhale—this is a sign your diaphragm is fully contracting to let your lungs fill with air. Breathing through the chest limits oxygen intake, which can slow metabolism, deprive cells of oxygen and cause tension in the neck and shoulders.

PrOTeCT YOur FeeT Warm-weather footwear tips from podiatrist Dr. Simon Becker
T
he long-awaited warm weather ushers in new wardrobes and puts a spring in your step—but, unfortunately, those sandals and flip-flops we adore all summer long can take the spring out of your step, too! As much as we don’t like to think about it, those types of footwear leave the feet unprotected and vulnerable to injuries, infections and fungi. But have no fear—Dr. Simon Becker of the Family Foot Center of West Orange has a few tips to help educate you about the best way to protect your feet and be fashionable, too. Q: Sandals and flip-flops are popular summer footwear, but leave the feet exposed. What steps should I take to care properly for my feet during this time of year? A: The biggest problem with flip-flips and sandals is the lack
of protection, but they also offer very little support for the arches. They leave the feet tremendously exposed to such dangers as bacteria, fungi, and trauma. If you’re going to wear flip-flops—merely a piece of rubber designed to separate you from the ground—only use them for one season, make sure they’re not flimsy, and don’t wear them for a prolonged period of time. It’s also important to buy shoes in the correct size—toes that hang off the end of a shoe are prone to injury. Don’t ignore any kind of irritation, since sandals and flip-flops dry out the skin, which leads to cracks and fissures. Those are potential places for infection to get in.
Q: Which kinds of injuries are common in the warmer months? How can I avoid them? A: We see an increase in foot pain in the summertime because
of footwear not supporting the arches. Our body relies on balance, so the second there’s imbalance, the foot will start straining, causing the inside portion of the arch to expand. This can result in such chronic inflammatory issues as knee and hip pain, caused when the knees move inward and the

hips outward, due to improper arch support. We also see foreign bodies caught under the toenails, common when people trip on decks and get splinters because their feet are completely unprotected. Athlete’s foot and nail fungus are also prevalent in the summer because folks can stub their toe while in flip-flops, which causes the nail to lift, creating a little space between the nail plate and the nail bed. This is one of the ways fungus can get under the nail and infect it. Athlete’s foot is a common problem that is found in the interspaces causing the area to be very itchy, macerated and painful.
Q: What kind of footwear do you recommend for everyday wear? A: Flip-flops are okay for short-term use around the pool or
at the beach, but regular, supportive shoes are the best for long-term exposure. The American Podiatric Medical Association has a list of shoes they consider best at supporting and protecting the foot and the toes. But no matter what kind of shoes you choose to wear, be sure to see a podiatrist if you have any issues affecting the foot. It’s much easier to resolve a potential problem than to resolve one that’s already progressed. s

DIAMOND MINDS By Barry Farber
WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE WORLD’S GREATEST CATCHER
I
n a recent radio interview I had the opportunity to speak with Hall of Fame catcher, Johnny Bench. He was the World Series MVP (1976), a 14-time All-Star, and winner of 10 Gold Gloves. He was also named the greatest catcher ever by the Sporting News in late 1998, in which Johnny was named the 16th greatest baseball player of all time. During our interview he inspired me with many ideas that I’m sharing with you here. I asked Johnny about his thoughts on learning, mentors, and focusing under pressure and here is what he had to say.
“A slump is like a soft bed, easy to get into and hard to get out of… persevere, persevere.”
– Johnny Bench
On Constant Learning…
I have a book called, “Catch Every Ball” about how to handle life’s pitches. Part of the book covers the vowels of success and “U” stands for “Use people’s knowledge.” Use the opportunity you have every day to learn from someone smarter or more experienced than yourself. When I speak at sales events and salespeople win their 15th trophy and plaque, I ask the younger reps if they ever talk to those winning salespeople. I tell them, “They may give you the way and a short cut to be more successful, so why not use the talents and experience of those people and advance what you’re doing?”
On Wise Advisors…
When you talk about playing at a higher level you have to ask yourself who are your friends, who are your mentors, who guides you? Every successful business has added marketing people and vice presidents who are
Barry Farber
smarter than the president himself. Great lawyers or accountants surround themselves with smart people. They understand that’s the way it’s going to work better.
On Performing Under Pressure…
How prepared are you? How have you prepared? Have you matched up against the competition? I have a thing I call “inner conceit” and it’s being better than the situation. Maybe the pitcher could have gotten me out but I didn’t believe he could. I didn’t think there was a runner that could steal a base. It is so important that you believe in what you can do and that you have trained for that level of performance. That’s why we have double-A players and singleA players. To listen to Johnny Bench’s full interview go to www.blogtalkradio.com/barryfarber.
Barry Farber consults with corporations, professional athletes and entertainers helping them market their products and land more deals. He’s the best-selling author of 12 books translated into 25 foreign languages with over one million copies sold. His next book, Success Secrets of Sales Superstars will be released April 2013 by Entrepreneur Press. You can see him on QVC selling out unique and innovative inventions. He’s a featured guest on CNN, Fox, CNBC and hosted over 400 Radio and Television shows in New York City, Washington and on the Comcast Television Network. Rare: The Steakhouse Still Drawing Raves

here are lots of famous father-son duos in the world today: actors Kirk Douglas and his son, Michael Douglas; slugger Tug McGraw and his son, country singer Tim. But my favorite local father-son duo would have to be Gregorio Polimeni, Sr., and his son, Gregorio Polimeni, Jr., partners in Rare: the Steakhouse, located in Little Falls. At Rare the atmosphere is subdued and inviting, the service is spot-on and knowledgeable, the menu is varied and creative and the food… ah, the food: from appetizers to desserts, it’s pretty much perfect. Many of the menu appetizers feature seafood, such as the $18 Sautéed Lump Crab Cake that started our evening off with a flourish. This generous beauty was crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside and packed with crab. A house signature appetizer, $25 for one, is the don’t-miss Seafood Platter, sporting a beautiful selection of lobster, clams, oysters, shrimp and King crab legs, artistically arrayed on shaved ice. And how’s this for service—our regular plates were whisked away, and chilled plates, appropriate for this dish, were substituted. From the special appetizers, we chose the Napoleon Tower, colorful layers of artisan greens, polenta, portabella mushroom and fresh mozzarella, draped with thinly sliced roasted red

peppers—colorful and sumptuous. Our Belgian Endive and Watercress Salad, $7, was a refreshing intermezzo, and the house dressing a delight. Not many steakhouses can boast homemade pasta, but Rare features a selection of Italian classics from Il Tulipano, the Polimeni’s popular catering hall, which can be ordered either as a main course for $15 or as an appetizer for $8. The Homemade Papardelle with Vodka Sauce and Green Peas called to us, and we gladly answered. Unlike so many other versions of this dish, Rare’s vodka sauce is light and elegant. Fish offerings here are listed as daily specials to ensure freshness, and the sublime pan-seared salmon with garlic and white wine sauce we chose was brilliant with taste and nicely complemented with sautéed broccoli rabe. The main attractions, of course, are fodder for the hearty eater: steaks, chops, and rack of lamb, all tantalizingly tempting. Our 18-ounce prime New York Sirloin, $40, was perfection personified—rich and luscious, intensely flavored, and grilled to perfection. Though it may seem anticlimactic, the side dishes at Rare are outstanding, especially the whipped potatoes with crème fraiche and Rare fries tossed with truffle oil and Parmesan dust. Just call them heaven on the side. A goody-laden dessert cart allows you to go light—fresh strawberries with whipped cream—or not-so-light—banana cream pie, as a finish. All desserts are $7. Rare is the unusual steakhouse that has it all, thanks in no small measure to Corradino Suriano, chef extraordinaire, who years ago held a day job, while commuting every night to the New York Restaurant School to pursue his dream. At Rare, he found the perfect venue to showcase his talents. Together, from beginning to end, the Rare team continues to offer its diners sophisticated and memorable food.
