Montclair Film Festival

T

Creating Baking Fun for All—Even Those with Gluten Intolerance

he Montclair Film Festival is back! This year the festival features over 160 films, events, discussions, and parties, with over 150 filmmakers and industry Photo courtesy of Montclair Film guests attending. The festival has grown to become one of the top regional festivals in the United States.

ne of the best ways to celebrate and create lasting memories is through baking delicious treats together. However, those who are intolerant of or allergic to gluten often miss out on these sweet culinary adventures. Bari & Betty’s Gluten Free Baking is here to change that.

The festival takes place at five venues throughout Montclair. Some of the films featured this year are Hearts Beat Loud, A Kid Like Jake, First Reformed and, closing the Festival, the documentary Believer. Scheduled to appear in programs and panel discussions are Stephen Colbert and Patrick Wilson hosting Ethan Hawke, Rachel Weisz, Nick Offerman, and Jeff Daniels.

Baking has always been a part of Bari and Betty’s family. So when a family member was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance, baking became a challenge. This began their quest to create a gluten free treat that everyone can enjoy. After a decade of work, the mother and daughter team has perfected the art of gluten-free pie with their Gluten Free Pie Crust Mix.

Also part of this year’s festival is a performance by McArthur winning Taylor Mac of “A 24 Decade History of Popular Music (Abridged)” and a special festival edition of Montclair’s Film’s StorySLAM–Close Encounters of the Worst Kind!

Made with everyday ingredients, their versatile, easy-to-make crust mix produces a delectable golden brown crust that everyone will love–whether or not they have a gluten intolerance. The crust mix can be custom built in your kitchen as a sweet, savory, dairy free, or vegan crust to surround your favorite fillings, and can be made into hand pies, potpies, quiches, tarts, and more.

Festival takes place through May 6. For information and tickets visit www.montclairfilm.org.

Local Dentist Offers Services and New Beginnings for Clients of NCJW

G

reg Scheier, DDS, of Scheier Dental Group in Millburn, knows that a smile goes a long way. Dr. Scheier and his associate, Samantha Shapiro, DMD, have generously donated their services to help clients from the Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women gain their confidence by obtaining dental work that they would otherwise be unable to afford. “I wholeheartedly believe in kindness and giving back to the community and what better way to show that than by getting involved with NCJW/Essex,” said Dr. Scheier. After learning about the life-changing work being done at the Center for Women, including helping women looking for a new job, starting a business or recovering from a loss, they decided to offer their own services. They have provided a variety of dental work for clients including routine dental exams, cleanings, x-rays, root canals, fillings and veneers. As Dr. Scheier looks ahead, he anticipates expanding his pro bono work to continue to help clients of the NCJW/Essex Center for Women. “Our clients who have benefitted from Dr. Scheier’s generosity have brighter smiles and greater confidence, which impacts their ability to obtain jobs,” noted Patty Kremen, Career Services Manager at the NCJW/Essex Center for Women.

Champion Waste Removal Makes Clean-Outs Stress-Free By Tonya Johnson, photo by Dan Epstein

Louis Mauriello

I

f you don’t know where to start with the mess that is your basement, or you can’t park your car in the garage anymore, there’s a man you need to talk with: Louis Mauriello of the familyowned Champion Waste. When it comes to clean-outs, Mauriello will be there for you every step of the way. He will access your needs, and give you advice and an estimate for your clean-out project. Here, he discusses the ins and outs of what he can do for you: What type of services do you offer? We will take full control of cleaning out your attic, basement or garage. Need a shed, deck or above ground pool removed? No problem. We service clients that are just purging during the spring and fall, and those that are putting their house on the market. We also do estate clean-outs. My trucks are smaller so I can fit dumpsters in places where the bigger trucks can’t. We bring wood with us so we won’t tear up your driveway. We are licensed and insured. We offer container and dump trailer services if you want to do the job yourself. What else do you do? Champion Waste is an REO specialist. We work with realtors to clean out foreclosures and bank owned properties. One part of the business that has taken off in the last two or three years is doing the demolition work for local contractors.

We also specialize in interior demolition work such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basement. We provide this work for homeowners and small contractors and carry demolition insurance. Do you encourage clients to recycle? I always advise clients on what parts of their job can be recycled. Champion Waste recycles cardboard, paper, magazines, copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, cast-iron and car and truck batteries. Our team members even carry wire cutters in their back pockets to recycle appliance cords. I generally discount removing recyclables, especially appliances, since there is no dumping charge for them. What is some basic advice for clients? Don’t wait until you have a big giant pile of stuff that’s too overwhelming. It’s not more expensive for us to make small, frequent trips. If you haven’t used an item in two years, you don’t need it. In May and September/October, Essex County runs an electronics drop off day if you want to purge outdated home electronics.

stablished in 1954, Russo Bros. and Co. has successfully trained so many plumbers that the company developed the nickname “The Professors of Plumbing.” Many of their trainees have gone on to set up their own businesses, but that’s just fine with the Russos. As current president Matt Russo says, “People will always need plumbers, so there will always be enough business to go around.” Russo adds that his company’s nickname is by now incomplete: “We still do all the plumbing services you’d expect—unclogging sinks and toilets, installing and repairing sump pumps and water heaters, things like that. At the same time, though, we’ve diversified tremendously.” He explains, “We are really a complete home-servicing company now. We are fully licensed and equipped to install, maintain and repair heating systems, such as radiators and hot water or steam boilers. The same goes for air conditioning systems: We can clean both indoor and outdoor units, add refrigerant and replace parts as needed.”

Unlike some other companies, Russo Bros. offers same-day emergency service. Russo notes, “Some situations are more than annoying; they’re actually dangerous. We have an operator on staff 24 hours a day to take calls and send out a technician to fix things like overflowing toilets or broken pipes.”

Realize Your Decorating Dreams at Ideal Tile

Got Pests? Helps Banish Bugs & Deer

By Deborah Schapiro

By Janis Hashe

I

deal Tile has been an Essex County resource for bathroom and kitchen for 17 years. During this time, co-owner Vincent Nigro has developed systems for helping clients turn their dreams into reality. Nigro says, “For a bathroom, I help the client select the wall tile first, since that will determine the style and color scheme for the rest of the bathroom.” He adds that all of Ideal’s wall tiles have complementary flooring options, although customers today are just as likely to choose a contrasting floor. For kitchens, he says, “It’s always best if a customer comes in with a sample of their cabinet doors, since the cabinetry sets the tone for the rest of the kitchen.” He works with them to choose floor tiles and then countertops; backsplash is last. With thousands of options from traditional to sleek and contemporary, Ideal Tile is the ideal place to help turn your design dreams to reality.

S

pring is finally here—and with it, mosquitos and ticks lurking, not to mention deer eyeing precious plants and landscaping. Got Pests? owner Dean Weiss, well-known for his Got Wildlife? service, has added anti-pest services to his business model. He and his team provide complete outdoor pest management. “The first step is a client interview. Then we do a cost estimate based on property size, followed by an on-site evaluation,” he says. “During winter, some pests hibernate, and with spring thaw, even a capful of water can harbor mosquito larvae.” Got Pests? offers several control options, including an organic spray made from chrysanthemums, and a synthetic version of it. Weiss believes in a green approach to pest management. “It doesn’t take much more effort, but it does take more knowledge,” he says. The crew of Got Pests? return to clients’ residences every three weeks to continue management. They even offer an “Event Spray” prior to clients hosting outdoor events.

The Non-Invasive Test Improving Posture for Young Athletes

I

f there was a simple, non-invasive test that would make your child into a better, safer athlete, how long would it take for you to sign up? Dr. Todd Schragen of All-Pro Health has brought this test, a Functional Movement Screening (FMS), to his office in Livingston. The test, which is a series of seven movements that determine muscular weaknesses causing poor posture and limited mobility, is a topic that Dr. Schragen is passionate about. “I personally have permanent injuries to my back that were sustained from poor technique and guidance as a student athlete,” notes Dr. Schragen. In 2010, he hired a physical therapist who introduced him to FMS. Dr. Schragen was tested and failed, which made him realize that traditional treatment was missing something, as it was only treating patient symptoms and not the cause.

Dr. Todd Schragen them from performing their sport.” With an FMS test, posture issues can be properly diagnosed to prevent injuries. Says Dr. Schragen, “If FMS was introduced to me as a young athlete, I would have been much more efficient and may have never experienced the debilitating injury to my back.”

At APH, they take a more global approach to treatment plans, with patients seeing more permanent results. Many patients are bringing in their children for the FMS test–and Dr. Schragen has discovered that many kids have the same postural issues as their parents.

All-Pro Health is offering complimentary Functional Movement Screens to all new patients ages 8–18 every Saturday until the end of May. Call the office to learn more.

“We saw dysfunctional movement patterns in almost every child we saw. These issues are simple to correct before the abnormal movement becomes a significant injury that could impact and limit

Discovery Wellness Center Combats Addictions By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

An important aspect of treatment is determining why a person may want to quit addictive behaviors, even if it is a very small percentage of their motivation. “Patients don’t need to learn how to deal with the cause of their abuse so much as they need the will to change,” notes Dr. Barker. Changing behavior from a negative to a positive can be daunting. “We work to remove lingering doubts and insecurities patients have about their interactions with family and friends when they change their behavior, as this may impact many aspects of their lives.” A patient’s treatment is tailored to their situation and personality. ichard A. Newman, DMD, a second-generation orthodontist with a private practice in West Orange and Randolph, follows in his father’s footsteps at the New Jersey Institute for Craniofacial Surgery at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Like his father, George V. Newman, DDS, one of the founders of the Institute, R. Newman serves as chief orthodontist. With a subspecialty in craniofacial orthodontics, the younger Newman treats patients with abnormalities of the face and jaw, primarily cleft lip and palate. At St. Barnabas, he works with a group of medical specialists, including speech pathologists, oral surgeons and craniofacial plastic surgeons dedicated to working with children who were born with these conditions. Patients often remain with the team from infancy through late teens, receiving a multitude of treatments in orthodontics, speech, hearing, neurosurgery, and genetics gradually as they grow and develop. Because the treatment is lengthy, Dr. Newman frequently forms a bond with his young patients. Seeing the oral health changes and the resulting improvement in physical appearance and confidence is rewarding to Dr. Newman. As the treatment progresses, lives are forever changed. “I chose the field of orthodontics because I love being able not only to improve a patient’s oral health through orthodontic treatment, but also being able to change their lives,” says Dr. Newman. “Craniofacial orthodontics has the power to transform a person’s life. The strength and beauty of each of these patients is found in who they are, and they inspire me every day to continue to pursue excellence in my field.”

ightPort® Physical Therapy & Spa, owned by Dr. John De Hoyos, DPT and located in the heart of Caldwell for the past two years, is dedicated to helping clients recover from any physical injury or physical condition, healing both the mind and body. Dr. De Hoyos and his committed team follow the slogan—“The Results You Want. The Care You Deserve.”—as they focus on comfort and success during each patient’s session. Dr. De Hoyos employs a hands-on approach that combines the best manual therapy techniques available with traditional therapeutic activities. His main objective when he opened the Caldwell location was to offer individualized, hands-on treatment. Dr. De Hoyos takes time with each client, getting to know their fitness goals and how they are seeking to benefit from physical therapy. After the initial evaluation, he can then create a personalized program of therapeutic exercise and kinetic movement. For the past 13 years, Dr. De Hoyos has worked with clients on multiple levels, and has experience in

hospitals and outpatient care, orthopedic treatment, sports injuries, post-surgical procedures, and the set-up of successful pain management clinics. Through his years of experience, he has developed his own proactive approach to wellness that highlights the fact that physical therapy is a mix of the science and the arts of healing. Dr. De Hoyos offers patients guidance on how to start their own custom exercise program, and tracks patients’ progress from the initial evaluation to each reexamination and sets functional goals for each individual according to their functional limitations. In addition to physical therapy, LightPort® Physical Therapy & Spa offers massage therapy and medical massage services. Offering a Dental DISCOUNT Plan for Those WITHOUT Dental Insurance

A

ccording to a recent survey by CBS News, nearly 40% of Americans do not have dental insurance. That is roughly 117 million people who, because they do not have access to coverage, will tend to avoid seeking dental care. Neglecting dental treatment can lead to tooth decay, gum infection, tooth loss and undetected oral cancer. The Dr. DalBon of New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry is aware that for many people, affording routine dental care can be an economic strain. To help open direct access to dental care, NJLCD has begun offering their own Dental Discount Plan. The plan is 100% managed by the dental office so there is no waiting period, no maximums, no deductibles, no claim forms and no pre-existing conditions. How does the plan work? A patient pays one annual fee, which covers their yearly checkups, X-rays, routine dental cleanings and emergency visits. The annual fee is less than if the patient paid for the dental procedures individually. The savings do not end there. The dental discount plan entitles the patient to a 15% discount on all dental treatment from laser cavity treatment to dental implants to Invisalign treatment.

Roseanne Did It – So Should You! Here’s Why Adding a Stairlift to Your Home Makes Sense

I

f climbing stairs at home has become too difficult for you or a loved one due to a temporary or permanent illness, disability or injury, adding a stairlift to the home may be beneficial. Below, Karen and Gregg Frank, owners of Back Home Safely, shed some light. What are the benefits of a stairlift? When walking upstairs becomes a burden, many people opt to create a living situation downstairs. This forces people to stop using the higher floors including the master bedroom and bathroom. Adding a stairlift allows the homeowner to continue enjoying the whole house. What types of stairlifts are available? Various lifts for straight, curved, interior and exterior stairs are available and can be viewed and tested in our Randolph, NJ showroom.

Are stairlifts covered by insurance? Most stairlifts are affordable through private pay; however, some insurance companies will cover the cost if an injury is due to a work- or auto-related injury. In addition, Veterans’ benefits, Medicaid and some long-term care policies sometimes cover the costs of a stairlift. What makes Back Home Safely different? We are owned by a licensed physical and occupational therapist familiar with the needs of this population. We offer a free home assessment by a therapist to identify optimal solutions to reduce barriers within the home. We also offer ramps, grabbars, stair-rails, barrier free bathrooms, wheelchair lifts, ceiling lifts and other related accessibility and safety products.

Ask The Expert

Q&A with Dr. Glenn Sorrentino THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER TREATMENT PROTOCOL Dr. Glenn Sorrentino

M

any people with aches, pains, injuries and chronic conditions often don’t know where to turn. Dr. Glenn Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove sheds light on the importance of the proper treatment protocol. Q. Why do people in pain feel hopeless?

A. Sometimes people think, “Oh I’ve tried this therapy or that treatment and nothing worked.” That can be true. One type of therapy or treatment may not be effective. What’s important is to have the right combination of treatments.

Q. What’s different about your treatment protocol? A. What sets us apart is our integration of services and different levels of therapies. Our treatments, therapies and technologies work in sync to get a patient better. We get to the root of the problem and customize a treatment program designed specifically for each individual. Patients who couldn’t get relief from their pain elsewhere come to us and see great results.

Q. What should people know about pain? A. Pain in one area is often the result of imbalance or weakness in another area. Biomechanics and body balance are very important. Knee pain is often caused by the hips being out of alignment, and shoulder pain almost always has a neck component.

Q. What kind of results do you get? A. One patient who hadn’t worked in 10 years because of headaches and fibromyalgia is now back at work after two months of our treatments, which in this case included IV vitamin therapy. Another patient, who had been to many places for a longtime shoulder problem, one day looked at me and said, “I can’t believe my shoulder doesn’t hurt anymore.” We hear those kind of comments every day in our office.

Q. Do you find your work rewarding? A. Absolutely. I believe in what we are doing, which is why I offer a free initial consultation. It provides a way to explain what the 52

problem is. When you leave, you’ll know what’s wrong with you and what we can do. I’m all about helping people live healthy, pain-free lives. Making the Right Impression 3D Solution to Treatment at Livingston Dental Arts By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

ivingston Dental Arts, a family dental practice, provides safe, gentle and state-of-the-art care. Doctors Michael Lee, a general and cosmetic dentist, and Vrajesh Shah, a prosthodontist, have embraced the latest technology to enhance patient comfort. Here, Dr. Lee explains the benefits of their newest equipment, an intraoral scanner. What is an intraoral scanner and what does it do? The scanner allows us to take pictures of a 3-D image. Think of it as a video that is used to obtain the impressions necessary to fit veneers, crowns, bridges and clear braces.

intramural scanner from Carestream Dental brings smarter scanning to our practice, whether we are handling restorative, orthodontic or implant cases. With a fast, accurate, and easy digital impression capture, our patients and dentists both benefit from improved treatment planning and a streamlined workflow. The scanner’s built-in technology provides extremely accurate, detailed images–there are no incomplete impressions. Achieving an impression digitally is beneficial to patients who have a gag reflex or are claustrophobic. Because it is digital, an image can quickly be sent to a laboratory, which decreases the time it takes for manufacturing a custom-made appliance for a patient.

How is it beneficial to patients? A continuous scanning mechanism makes it faster to acquire an impression than traditional methods. The CS 3600

MY BIG FAT Greek Restaurant Tour Time to Learn About Greek Food By Dan Epstein, photos by Dan Epstein

A

ll I knew about Greek food was the occasional gyro I’d order from time to time at a diner. Figuring it was time to learn something about the cuisine, I sought help from a couple of family-owned restaurants in suburban Essex County.

Thavma

THE CULTURE OF GREEK CUISINE, THEY ASSURE ME, IS BUILT ON SIMPLE, NATURAL FLAVORS. GREEKS DON’T COVER THE FLAVORS WITH SAUCES.

58

My first stop was Thavma at 6230 Town Center Way in Livingston. I asked owner Alex Diamantopoulos for his most popular dish, and he offered up a Fillet of Sole stuffed with fresh spinach and feta cheese. It’s accompanied by julienned vegetables including zucchini, carrots, and broccoli, topped with a Burre Blanc sauce seasoned with shallots, white wine, and spices, and garnished with scallions. When asked what else is popular and what should I try next time, Alex tells me that a couple of other standby favorites are Chicken Santorini, and the char-grilled Rack of Lamb. I also learn that “Thavma” in Greek is “Miracle,” though it’s no miracle that the restaurant has been here for 11 years. Alex’s dad Nick mentored him when he first opened, and whether you’re here in the summer enjoying the outdoor patio, or picking up an order to go, it’s easy to understand why Thavma is at the top of TripAdvisor’s list for Livingston.

The next stop on my Essex County Greek tour was Stamna, 1045 North Broad Street, in Bloomfield. Here, owner Themis Nissirious shared a menu favorite that his grandmother made for his mother as a child and is still one of her favorites: Karpathian Makarrounes. This wonderful Greek comfort food starts with handmade whole wheat cavatelli that Nissirous imports from Greece, and has a sauce based on Mizithro, which is a kind of dried Ricotta from Greece. It’s topped with onions caramelized in a goat and sheep butter. He assures me that no other establishment makes this dish and it’s very popular, with folks often ordering the entrée to split as an appetizer. It’s delicious and when I close my eyes I can imagine myself at Themis’ grandmother’s kitchen table. When I come back I’ll be trying either the Charcoal-grilled Octopus, or the Lavraki, which is charcoal-grilled Bronzino. Stamna also has outdoor dining in warm weather, and you can bet I’m looking forward to that.

PETER AND WEI HAJIYERU SERVED UP GRILLED LAMB CHOPS WITH LEMON ROASTED POTATOES. THE CULTURE OF GREEK CUISINE, THEY ASSURE ME, IS BUILT ON SIMPLE, NATURAL FLAVORS. GREEKS DON’T COVER THE FLAVORS WITH SAUCES.

Greek Taverna

Stamna

IT’S DELICIOUS AND WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES I CAN IMAGINE MYSELF AT THEMIS’ GRANDMOTHER’S KITCHEN TABLE.

The final destination in my syllabus was Greek Taverna at 292 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, where Peter and Wei Hajiyeru served up Grilled Lamb Chops with Lemon Roasted Potatoes. The culture of Greek cuisine, they assure me, is built on simple, natural flavors. “Greeks don’t cover the flavors with sauces,” Wei tells me. “Natural, simple flavors are very popular, and we use super fresh ingredients.” Peter is the second generation of his family in the restaurant business, and that experience shows in both this location and a second in Edgewater. When I come back, I’ll order the Grilled Bronzino or the Chicken Souvlaki, both of which they tell me are top choices amongst their regulars. I begin to think outdoor dining is a Mediteranean thing, because Greek Taverna also has a patio where in the right weather you can eat and keep an eye on downtown goings on. While there may not be any dancing or breaking of plates, these three establishments at opposite ends of suburban Essex County are the real deal. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of Greek cuisine, or someone like me who is eager to learn, all three of these restaurants are worth the trip.

Diamond Minds

It’s All About The Relationship…

O

ver the past 28 years in business I’ve had deals done on paper napkins, post-it notes, short contracts and long contracts and the ones that have always worked out best are based on a simple handshake.

Respect You… Respect is earned over time. Knowledge of your profession and passion does help but it’s more than that. When’s the last time you mailed a hand written thank you note in a stamped envelope? It may be something done many years ago but there’s a lot to that personal touch and that small extra effort goes a long way. Appreciating people is showing you respect them and it usually comes back to you.

There are always going to be agreements and contracts negotiated for specific licensing, patent information or entertainer and athlete deals. But when you build such a strong relationship with your client where the value lives on both sides there are benefits and security that no contract can guarantee.

Barry Farber

There are three keys that bind your relationships in powerful ways. People have to like you, respect you and trust you:

Like You… When you’re listening and totally in tune with people around you your actions have a greater impact. What person ever said, “I don’t like that person, he always listens to me and understands where I’m coming from.” You could be funny or easy to talk to but when you understand your environment first the art of building rapport becomes a more natural step. Learn to listen, listen to learn. People like when you have a genuine interest in them.

Trust You…

There are a few things to keep in mind when building trust. First, do you have the other person’s goals and interests ahead of everything else? Do they see you that way? It takes years to build a relationship and only one minute...one little lie to lose it. It also has to do with the people you surround yourself with. Many great leaders throughout history were able to surround themselves with people who had two key attributes: integrity and intelligence. Trust is a two way street. Sometimes it’s not just about building the relationship but walking away from it that becomes the better choice. In the long run you do become the people you surround yourself with. One last piece of advice... look them in the eye. Sounds so simple but the eyes are truly the windows to the soul.
