Checkmate To A Better Future Raises $3,600 for Essex County Park Foundation

Checkmate To A Better Future, a nonprofit founded by Livingston High School senior Aston Roberts, hosted its first Summer Chess Tournament and Fundraiser, raising $3,600 for the Essex County Park Foundation. The funds will support the installation of permanent concrete chess tables in Essex County parks—creating lasting spaces for learning, strategy, and community connection.

Inspired by weekends spent at public chess tables in New York City from the age of five, Aston organized the event that drew more than 90 community members, including over 50 players of all skill levels. During the celebration, he presented a ceremonial check to Phil Alagia, Chief of Staff to the Essex County Executive.

Beyond the tournament, Aston continues to spread his love of chess by teaching residents at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center and the Essex County Correctional Facility, using the game as a tool for building life skills. To learn more, visit: https://checkmatetoabetterfuture.com/

When Tarot Becomes a Language of Inner Wisdom

It’s not every day that someone can say they love their job, but Livingston-raised Dina Perlmutter Berrin can. Dina is an intuitive life coach who speaks two languages— tarot and English—and uses them to help clients connect with their inner voice. First introduced to astrology by her grandmother, she developed a lifelong passion for Tarot, numerology, and other tools for self-discovery, honing them over 25 years into what she calls a language of inner wisdom.

Dina is also the creator of divination charms, a party favorite where guests draw from a teacup for quick, uncanny readings. She offers Tarot and palm readings at private sessions, events, and parties, bringing deep empathy, often with hugs and tissues close at hand. Her book The Way Within (@Amazon) blends memoir with accessible practices in Tarot, numerology, and more. At the same time, her programs guide people from feeling stuck to finding alignment, so their next chapter unfolds with clarity and purpose. For more information, visit: dinaberrin.com.

Designing With Heart

What began as a childhood love of fashion has grown into a creative journey—one that Montclair’s Jade Alycia Webber has shaped with equal parts artistry and sustainability. A study-abroad trip to Paris Fashion Week inspired her to carve her own path, shaping business expertise with a sharp eye for design. Over the years, she has created one-ofa-kind handbags, headpieces, jewelry, and apparel—pieces made to tell stories rather than follow trends.

Her passion for wellness grew from that same place of authenticity. After struggling with sensitive skin, Jade began experimenting with natural remedies, guided by curiosity and care. Today, each formula she develops is crafted with all-natural ingredients she personally tests. Whether hand-setting crystals onto an accessory or whipping a body butter, she approaches her work with the same thoughtful, handson spirit. For her, creativity isn’t just a career—it’s a way of living with heart. To learn more, visit jadealycia.com and jadealyciabeauty.com.

Unlocking the Power Within

For years, Livingston’s Chitra Rochlani of Livingston kept her intuitive gifts quiet, worried about how the world would see her. When she finally embraced them, her life transformed. Guided by intuition, she wrote The Warrior Mindset, a book that became the foundation for new opportunities to share her story. Soon after came a podcast of the same name—now with more than 20,000 downloads—and programs that help others navigate their own inner journeys.

Today, Chitra blends her role as a medium and energy coach with live readings, workshops, and ALIGN, a virtual “gym for the soul” offering weekly classes in mindset and emotional alignment. Her path shows how trusting one’s inner voice can lead not only to personal peace but also to inspiring others to find their own. For more information, visit: fitwarriorlife.com.

or regulars at Grover Cleveland Park, Caldwell painter Rick Mullin with his easel has become as familiar as the scenery he captures on canvas. A retired journalist, Rick has spent more than 35 years devoted to art, working in oil in his studio and acrylics outdoors. His subjects include landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, reflecting his devotion to traditional styles.

“I paint Grover Cleveland Park a lot because it’s beautiful. You can turn your head in any direction and it’s a whole new scene,” he says.

Inspired by artists like Chaim Soutine, about whom he wrote a book-length poem in terza rima titled Soutine, and Montclair’s own George Inness, Rick continues to explore and refine his craft. He exhibits widely, with recent shows at Pennyrose Coffee Company in Newton and Trend Coffee & Tea House in Montclair, and looks ahead to a one-man show at Viridian Artists in Chelsea in June 2026. West Caldwell resident is Running for Her Dad and a Cure

West Caldwell resident and Livingston native, Larissa Burgoyne, is taking on the New York City Marathon on November 2 with a mission of raising $5,000 for CurePSP, the nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disease often mistaken for Parkinson’s. She is running in honor of her father, Robert J. Auble, a beloved physical education teacher and coach who passed away from PSP in December 2024.

Though not a lifelong runner, Larissa has been training diligently and completed a half marathon this spring, raising $2,000 for the cause. Inspired by the marathon’s spirit of purpose and unity, she chose the NYC Marathon as a fitting tribute to her dad, who devoted his life to sports and teaching. “Running isn’t easy for me, but the mission makes it worth it,” she says. Every step brings Larissa closer to honoring her dad’s legacy and helping fund research and awareness for PSP. To donate, visit: https://give.curepsp.org/ LarissaRunsTheNYCMarathon.

Livingston Teen Creates Mentorship Program for Kids and Teens with Hearing Loss

GGrowing up with hearing loss, Jayden Rosenfeld faced challenges most kids never think about—from hearing aid batteries going out during a basketball game to missing instructions in a noisy classroom. Instead of letting those moments define him, the Livingston teen turned them into motivation to help others.

Jayden, a 17-year-old senior at Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, was born with moderate to severe hearing loss and has worn hearing aids since he was a baby. In February 2025, he launched Hear for Each Other, a free mentorship program that pairs younger kids with hearing loss with older teens who understand their experiences.

The program already has 20 participants who meet mostly over Zoom and FaceTime, although some local pairs connect in person. Conversations range from school strategies and self-advocacy tips to video games and casual chats that help friendships grow.

“The goal is to give younger kids a sense of connection and reassurance,” Jayden explained. “They see someone older who has gone through the same situations, and they are able to connect with someone who ‘gets’ it. The younger participants see the older teens and realize that they can thrive too.”

The idea grew out of Jayden’s visits to Sound Start Babies, the early intervention program he once attended himself. Volunteering there when he was older reminded him how important it is for children with hearing loss to see positive role models. With the encouragement of his mother, Erica, who promoted the initiative on social media and through hearing loss networks, Jayden began building connections and creating matches.

While mentoring takes time, Jayden has not slowed down elsewhere. He plays varsity basketball and baseball, writes for his school newspaper, serves as president of the Sports Management club, and interns with the New Jersey Jackals baseball team. His passion for sports has also inspired dreams of bringing hearing-impaired athletes, including professionals, to speak with participants in the program and to plan other online gatherings for all the Hear for Each Other participants.

For now, he is proud of the impact Hear for Each Other is already making. “It feels good to be able to help other kids,” he said. “I had people who helped me when I was younger, and now I want to make sure other kids know they’re not alone.”

Students Turn Summer Learning into Global Impact Through Teaching for Charity

FFor most high schoolers, summer means long days by the pool or late mornings spent sleeping in. This summer, however, a group of students from Livingston High School (LHS) chose a different path. They blended learning, service, and generosity through the program Teaching for Charity (T4C), turning their break into a chance to make a difference both locally and globally.

Founded in 2021 by LHS alumni William Wang, Jonathan Hong, and Tyler Ferreira, T4C offers affordable summer courses in subjects such as math, English, coding, public speaking, chess, and arts and crafts. The classes, taught by high school students with expertise for younger learners, combine peer-to-peer mentoring with a powerful purpose: every dollar raised is donated to charity. T4C also offers academic tutoring throughout the whole year.

The benefits are threefold. Beyond the funds raised, the program instills leadership and teaching skills in its tutors, participants receive valuable academic enrichment, and students in Uganda and Cambodia benefit from life-changing donations.

LHS senior Grace Wang, the current Executive Board leader, reflected, “For me, this program isn’t just about fundraising. It’s about creating a community where students support each other, whether it’s kids learning new skills or tutors gaining confidence at the front of a classroom.”

Since its founding, T4C has raised nearly $23,000. Donations have supported initiatives like Wings of Dreams, which empowers underprivileged students in Uganda to pursue higher education. To date, T4C has helped seven students graduate from college. The program has also enabled Wings of Dreams to equip a local study center in Uganda with new computers, computer mice, books, reading materials, additional instructors, and funding for a student support system. In Cambodia, donations provided uniforms for a boys’ soccer team.

T4C classes are held in person at a local church, creating a welcoming environment where small groups of students learn from two to three tutors at a time. The atmosphere is both structured and fun. Arts and crafts sessions, for example, run for two to three hours, giving young learners handson creative experiences while reinforcing collaboration. Chess and coding courses are perennial favorites and often fill up quickly.

Grace has carried on her brother William’s vision with the help of classmates, including communications board member Amanda Zhong, who said, “It feels good knowing that what we’re doing is making an impact. Seeing the kids here have fun while learning, and knowing that the money we raise is going to help someone else get an education too, is very rewarding.”

With each lesson taught and each skill shared, Teaching for Charity proves that education can have a ripple effect, nurturing young learners in Livingston while sending waves of hope across the globe.

Finally, Real Answers for Chronic Conditions

If you’ve tried everything —specialists, prescriptions, physical therapy, unusual diets—and still find yourself stuck in pain, fatigue, or hormonal chaos, merely existing instead of truly living… you are not alone. At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we deeply understand the exhaustion, the desperation, and the quiet heartbreak that comes with chronic, misunderstood conditions. That’s why patients turn to us—not because it’s the obvious choice, but because they’ve come to recognize the need for a new perspective, a different approach -and the results they thought were out of reach

Why Patients Choose Us—And Stay

Yes, there are many acupuncturists—and plenty of doctors. But what makes us truly different is the rare ability to blend the best of both worlds: the centuries-old wisdom of Chinese Medicine and the precision of modern medical science. Led by Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc, a practitioner with over 15 years of clinical experience, a doctorate in Traditional Chinese Medicine and a strong background in pharmaceutical sciences and toxicology, we offer more than needles—we offer insight, integration, and real solutions.

Real Testing. Real Answers. Real Relief.

Your body tells a story, and we listen—through your words and through traditional and advanced diagnostics like saliva hormone testing and functional medicine evaluations. We specialize in uncovering hidden imbalances often missed by conventional labs and looking at the whole picture— your diet, gut health, metabolisim, inflammation, stress—all of it. Our integrative approach helps treat not just symptoms, but the root causes of conditions.

Who We Help

We create solutions for stubborn, life-limiting conditions like:

• Peripheral Neuropathy (diabetic, chemotherapy-induced, autoimmune)

• Menopause & Hormonal Imbalances

• Unexplained Infertility

• Chronic Migraines

• Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue

• Post-COVID Complications

• Autoimmune Disorders

• Arthritis & Musculoskeletal Pain

• Post-Shingles Pain & Nerve Damage

• Neurological Disorders such as Bell’s Palsy, Parkinson’s or post-stroke recovery

We Don’t Just Treat. We Tailor.

“This
“She understood me. No one else ever listened like she did.”
“I didn’t believe in acupuncture—now I’m telling everyone about it.”

Chronic conditions often stem from a complex interplay of immune imbalances, persistent stress, gut dysbiosis, and environmental toxins—all driving systemic inflammation. At our clinic, we don’t just treat symptoms; we design precisionbased programs tailored to you.

Whether it’s Metabolic Reset, Hormone Balancing, Neurological Regeneration, or Physiologic De-stressing, each program is rooted in deep understanding and advanced integrative therapies—from BioResonance and Ozone to acupuncture, dry needling, complex herbal formulas, nutraceuticals, nutritional strategies and specialized body movement. This is personalized healing—built and tailored around your story, not a textbook.

You Deserve Better Answers

We treat you like a whole person— not a case file. We don’t believe your conditions are a life defining diagnosis you simply have to live with. Here, we dig deeper. We help you understand your body. And we build a plan to heal it.

If you’re ready to feel better and live a more vibrant life—and you’re truly committed to making it happen—give us a call and let’s get started. Visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com or call (973) 444-8932 to book your first consultation.”

Illumination Exhibition

GGallery491 is proud to present a solo exhibition by acclaimed artist Gail M. Boykewich.

Illumination is a celebration of light in all its forms—sunlight, moonlight, and metaphorical enlightenment. At once playful and poignant, the exhibition offers a multifaceted exploration of nature, myth, and the human connection to the environment. Boykewich’s work often weaves together religious fables, magical realism, and rich symbolism to reflect on both personal and collective transformation.

With a distinctive style rooted in bright color, intricate pattern, and imaginative portraiture, Boykewich’s acrylic paintings and papier-mâché sculptures depict a blend of fictional characters and real, often endangered, animals. The result is a stylized, dreamlike realm that evokes themes of love, loss, absurdity, and ecological urgency. “I use my love for unusual plants, animals, bright color, and pattern to help create a stylized world viewers can escape into,” says Boykewich.

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 9

Montclair Artist Showcases Work

FFor years, Yanni Fotiadis shaped skylines as an architect. Now, he’s shaping stories through art. This fall, the Montclair-based creative unveils his first major solo exhibition at the Montclair Art Museum. Fotiadis’ transition from architecture to full-time artist has been both bold and natural. His realist and figurative works—crafted in graphite, colored pencil, and occasionally digital mediums—reflect the precision of his architectural training while embracing the fluidity of human expression. The show will feature approximately 30 pieces, offering not just finished works but also glimpses into his process, from early sketches to fully realized drawings.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the structure of things,” Fotiadis explains. “Architecture taught me discipline and detail, but art allows me to explore emotion and narrative in a different way.”

In addition to portraits and studies, the exhibit highlights drawings inspired by architectural forms, where geometry meets gesture. Visitors will experience an intimate look at how an architect’s eye can reinterpret balance, space, and line in unexpected ways.

Essex County Hospital in Belleville Has Been Transformed into Historic SoHo Lofts

HHistoric SoHo Lofts is an eight-floor residential complex that seamlessly blends the building’s rich historical character with modern amenities and luxury finishes. After years of careful restoration work by developer Steve Valiotis, the former medical facility has been reimagined as what is expected to become Belleville’s most desirable place to live.

“This project represents the perfect marriage of preserving our community’s history while creating modern, comfortable living spaces for residents,” said Mike Digenakis, Residential Leasing Supervisor.

“The transformation of this long-unused facility into a vibrant residential community is truly the crown jewel of Belleville.”

Historic SoHo Lofts offers residents an exceptional living experience with comprehensive amenities including a state-ofthe-art fitness center, community residents’

lounge and indoor recreation facilities. The building is surrounded by multiple beautifully landscaped outdoor areas, providing residents with both urban convenience and natural tranquility.

Steve Valiotis was quick to point out that the former abandoned hospital will contain 245 residential units across 8 floors, extensive landscaped grounds surrounding the building, a top-of-the-line fitness center and community room, on-

site laundromat for resident convenience, dedicated on-site parking, and a dog run area for pet owners. The Development Team also proudly announced that two floors, roughly one-third of the apartments, will be dedicated for use by 55+ residents.

The completion of Historic SoHo Lofts marks the successful conclusion of a multi-year rehabilitation effort that has transformed a historically significant but unused building into a modern residential community that honors its past while serving the future needs of Belleville residents.

Leasing information is available by contacting Steven Irizarry, by phone at (347) 360-3812 or by email at steveni@serhant.com

My Motto is Maintenance

AAs the leaves turn and the holiday season approaches, many people begin thinking about how to look and feel their best for upcoming gatherings, celebrations, and photos. According to Paul M. Figlia, MD, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, “the secret to a youthful, radiant appearance is not about quick fixes—it’s about maintenance and consistency.”

By establishing Face To Face Medical Spa, within his luxurious, state-of-the-art cosmetic practice, located in West Orange, Dr. Figlia and his Medical Aesthetic Staff can provide a variety of cutting edge treatments for optimal results. Patients can achieve medical aesthetic treatments, cosmetic laser procedures, and can consult directly with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for cosmetic surgery, all in one place.

“Maintenance should be the foundation of any relationship between a patient and their plastic surgeon,” Dr. Figlia explains. “It’s not about coming in once for Botox and disappearing. It’s about a thoughtful, ongoing plan that keeps you looking naturally refreshed over time.”

My Motto is Maintenance

THE CASE FOR CONSISTENCY

Women often start to notice the first signs of aging between their late 30s and early 40s. Fine lines, loss of volume, and skin texture changes are gradual—but so too can be the solution. Just as regular haircuts or manicures are part of a beauty routine, Dr. Figlia encourages patients to view aesthetic care in the same way. By scheduling treatments steadily throughout the year, patients protect their investment, avoid dramatic “overnight” changes, and maintain a subtle, natural look that evolves beautifully over time.

(continued from the previous page)

BUILDING A FOUNDATION

One of the best places to start, Dr. Figlia says, is with skin health. Treatments like HydraFacial—recommended monthly—deeply cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin. Combined with a customized at home regimen, this creates a strong foundation for other procedures. “Think of it as maintaining the canvas,” he notes.

Your yearly Maintenance Plan would be customized to your needs. They include: HydraFacials, Botox or Daxxify neurotoxin, facial fillers, such as Dr. Figlia’s favorite, the award winning RHA collection for smoothing wrinkles and restoring youthful volume. Compliment these services with laser peels or MicroNeedling to refine tone, texture, and tighten skin, all promoting new collagen growth. Advanced options like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), radio-frequency treatments such as Forma, or the innovative Morpheus8 MicroNeedling platform deliver powerful skin-tightening and rejuvenating results with little to no downtime.

ALWAYS EVOLVING, ALWAYS SUBTLE

Dr. Figlia’s Medical Spa is equipped with multiple platforms for MicroNeedling, lasers, and radiofrequency technology, giving patients access to the most advanced options available. “Most practices may have one device in each category—we have several,” he says. “This allows us to tailor every treatment plan to the individual, ensuring the most effective results.”

Importantly, these treatments are designed to keep improvements steady and discreet. Patients who follow a Maintenance Plan often find that friends notice they look vibrant, but can’t pinpoint why. It’s the kind of secret confidence that comes from doing “a little something” consistently, rather than dramatic, one-time changes.

PRE-HOLIDAY GLOW

With the holidays just around the corner, Dr. Figlia encourages patients to begin their seasonal refresh now. Whether it’s a HydraFacial for brightness, Botox for smoothing, or a radiofrequency session to lift and tighten, these treatments can help anyone look and feel their best for the festivities ahead.

“Consistency is key,” Dr. Figlia emphasizes. “When you make maintenance part of your lifestyle, you’re not chasing youth—you’re preserving your natural beauty and enhancing it year after year.”

This fall, add Dr. Figlia to the same schedule you keep for your hair and nails. With the right plan in place, you’ll not only enter the holidays glowing—you’ll continue to radiate confidence all year long.

Don’t wait, schedule your consultation and have Dr. Figlia and staff facilitate the appropriate regimen for this holiday season and pre-empt your 2026 calendar year’s beauty Maintenance Schedule. Let your journey to wellness begin to feeling the best version of yourself at Face To Face Medical Spa.

But Wait, There’s More!

STORY & PORTRAIT BY

OOne of New Jersey’s most wellregarded artists, Montclair resident Tom Nussbaum is being currently featured in a major exhibit at Montclair Art Museum. Raised in Minneapolis, he moved to New York City in 1980. In 1993 he found a home in Montclair and currently maintains a studio within the Manufacturers Village Artist’s Studios complex in East Orange.

The current exhibit at the Museum is entitled: “But Wait, There’s More.” And there is. It’s a retrospective of his life’s work spanning six decades and includes over 80 pieces. While there is often a spark of the autobiographical to be found in his work, viewers can’t help being engaged by the whimsy and charm of his work.

Raised by parents who themselves like to make things, an early effort, Ice Racers, 1963, enamel paint on carved erasers, paper clips, and Scotch Tape, are sculptures made when the artist was only ten years old. In them you can see the beginnings of the vision that would shape his later work. Aside from the visual amusement, the racers were made for actual use on the ice-covered driveway at the artist’s childhood home.

Found on the lawn of the Montclair Art Museum is Big Listen, made in 2008 of polyurethane on fiberglass, which Nussbaum says: “is part of a series of figurative pieces about psychology and relationships. Maybe it’s Dad, with me thinking about what it’s like to be heard.” He also adds that to him there’s a sense of the mythological in it because of the size, and the expressive feelings. He loves that because of its size and placement, people often interact with and touch it.

Seen here also is a close-up of one part of But Wait, There’s More. The sculpture was made in 2024 of acrylic on steel, wood, epoxy, tin, and paper. The construction is figuratively of a wagon, and a self portrait. The figure seen in this detail is his partner, Kate Dodd in this piece his guardian angel/ superhero announcing his work. This recent work is also the piece which this exhibition is named after.

You can see more of Nussbaum’s amazing work at the Montclair Art Museum until January 24, 2026. Likewise, you’ll be able to meet the artist at the Manufacturers Village Open Studios in East Orange, when the artists open their studios to the public on October 18/19. There is plenty of free parking at both locations.

Protect Your Hearing, Protect Your Life

Most of us make time for yearly checkups with our doctors, dentists, and eye specialists. Yet many people overlook one area that has a huge impact on quality of life: hearing health.

Hearing loss often happens gradually. You might notice the TV volume creeping higher, ask others to repeat themselves, or feel more tired after conversations. These may seem like small changes, but left unaddressed they can affect relationships, job performance, and even overall health.

The good news is that hearing loss can be detected early through a simple screening. At AudioNova in West Caldwell, we offer complimentary hearing checks to give you peace of mind. Even if you do not notice issues, an annual screening helps establish a baseline for the future.

Today’s hearing technology is smaller, smarter, and more comfortable than ever. Patients who start using hearing aids early often adjust more easily and enjoy better results. On the other hand, untreated hearing loss has been linked to social isolation and cognitive decline.

Taking care of your hearing is as important as caring for your heart, eyes, or teeth. A quick appointment could make a lasting difference in your well-being.

We forward to helping you stay connected to what matters most.

Fall Prevention for Seniors

Why Balance Matters

TTrips and falls can happen to anyone, but they are especially dangerous for older adults. Aging and common health conditions increase the risk of falling, and the consequences—such as fractures, concussions, or loss of independence—can be serious. That’s why balance and fall prevention are essential for senior well-being.

As we age, three systems that help control balance may weaken: Somatosensory system: relays body position and movement. Vestibular system: located in the inner ear, helps regulate balance.

Visual system: provides spatial awareness.

Decline in any of these systems, combined with reduced muscle strength or medical conditions like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis, raises fall risks.

Physical therapy offers proven strategies to reduce fall risk. A therapist will evaluate your balance, gait, and home environment,

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

then design a personalized plan. This may include balance, flexibility, and endurance exercises as well as hazard removal recommendations.

Simple exercises can improve strength and stability:

Weight shifting: Stand or sit with feet hip-width apart, lean side to side, and repeat.

Single-leg stands: Hold onto a chair, lift one leg, and balance for a few seconds before switching sides.

Tai chi: This gentle practice improves coordination, flexibility, and confidence.

Balance and fall prevention program are designed to support seniors in staying safe, active, and independent.

REVOLUTIONIZING MEMORY CARE

TThe Memory Center is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility where doctors utilize comprehensive care and innovative solutions for people experiencing memory and cognitive challenges. The boardcertified physicians, including neurologist Dr. Michael Heublum, internist Dr. Jeffrey Shenfeld, and an entire staff of highly trained technologists, complete a full range of testing and create a unique, customized therapy plan for each patient.

Dr. Shenfeld explains the Center’s philosophy: “We understand that cognitive decline is the potential result of a wide array of underlying medical issues. Knowing and addressing your risk factors is how we can be proactive in this fight. The earlier you are aware of possible genetic predispositions, and the sooner you take care of chronic conditions, the more control you have over neurodegenerative disease.” Dr. Shenfeld elaborates: “Our therapeutic strategy incorporates not only traditional methods of treating chronic conditions such as

insomnia, stress-related changes, and insulin resistance, but also includes integrative medicine, which addresses changes in eating, sleeping, and lifestyle in general. We focus on you as a complete individual, not a symptom alone.”

This is a revolutionary time in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, significant advances have been made in diagnosing Alzheimer’s, including a combination of laboratory and imaging tests. New treatment options have emerged, including antibody infusions and non-invasive treatments. At the Memory Center, the doctors and staff understand the challenges individuals and families face with memory impairments. From early detection and diagnostic evaluations to personalized treatment plans and Dr. Jeffrey Shenfeld

ongoing support, the team is committed to enhancing cognitive health and improving quality of life.

Step into Comfort:

The Importance of Senior Foot Care

AAs we age, our feet often carry the weight of a lifetime—literally. For seniors, proper foot care is more than just comfort; it’s a vital part of maintaining mobility, independence, and overall well-being. “Neglecting foot health can lead to pain, balance issues, and even more serious complications, states Dr. Wachtler of Cedar Grove Foot and Ankle Specialists.

One of the most common concerns for older adults is reduced circulation, which slows the healing of minor cuts and blisters. Routine foot inspections can help catch problems early, before they worsen. Seniors should check daily for redness, swelling, or changes in skin texture, and seek medical advice if anything unusual appears.

Dry skin and thickened toenails are also frequent challenges. Moisturizing regularly and trimming nails straight across (or having them trimmed professionally) can help prevent discomfort and infections. Comfortable, well-fitting shoes with good support are essential for preventing falls, blisters, and pressure sores.

For those with conditions like diabetes or arthritis, extra vigilance is required. Numbness from neuropathy can mask injuries, while joint stiffness can make self-care difficult. Dr. Wachtler can provide specialized treatment and guidance to keep feet healthy and pain-free.

“Incorporating gentle foot exercises, such as ankle circles or toe stretches, can improve flexibility and circulation. Even something as simple as elevating the feet after a walk helps reduce swelling,” says Dr. Wachtler.

Making the Most of Your Benefits

MEDICARE:

First Time Enrollment and Updating Your Plan

TTurning 65 marks your eligibility for Medicare, but the process can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re enrolling for the first time or reviewing your current plan, knowing your options is essential. You don’t have to stay in a plan that no longer meets your needs.

First-Time Enrollment

Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Part A covers in-patient care, skilled nursing, home health care, and hospice. Part B covers outpatient services, doctor visits, preventive care, and therapies.

Since Original Medicare doesn’t cover things like medical deductibles and coinsurance, many choose a Medigap or also known as a Medicare Supplement to cover those out of pocket costs. These plans offer stable benefits and broader provider access.

Another option is Medicare Advantage (Part C), offered by private insurers. These plans combine Parts A and B, often with

added benefits like dental, vision, or fitness. Many have low or zero premiums but typically require in-network providers.

Prescription coverage is available through Part D drug plans, each with its own formulary. Starting in 2025, out-of-pocket costs are capped, with a $2,100 maximum set for 2026. New Jersey residents may also qualify for PAAD or Senior Gold programs to lower drug costs.

If you delay enrollment without qualifying coverage, penalties may apply for both Part B and Part D.

Updating Your Plan

Medicare isn’t one-and-done. Each year, during Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15–Dec. 7), you can switch between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, or Part D drug plans. Review provider networks,

costs, medications, and added benefits to ensure your plan fits your health and budget.

If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have another window—Jan. 1–Mar. 31— to change plans or return to Original Medicare.

Medicare can be complex, but resources and guidance are available. As your health and needs change, your plan should too.

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE

Conquering Peripheral Neuropathy with Rose Gold Wellness

“It’s as though l’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.”

“It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”

“Like I’m walking on wet paint with rolled up socks.”

And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.

“It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Rose W.

Rose was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.

“My doctor sat me down and said, ‘Rose, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but you have peripheral neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable. My first thought was, ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.”

While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown. This was the case with Rose. “Basically every question I had was met with an ‘I don’t know. It was depressing to say the least.”

Eventually, Rose was forced to quit her job because the numbness had started to set in and prevented her from driving. Fortunately, she went to a talk Rose Gold Wellness gave on what they were doing to treat peripheral neuropathy.

“I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor on TV saying she had a 90% success rate in treating neuropathy! I just had to call and I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”

Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, founder of Rose Gold Wellness, says that cases like Rose’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in offering hope.”

To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails.”

“Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions like neuropathy for thousands of years,” shares Dr. Rosie.

“I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my two decades of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on a number of factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”

Four months after treatment, Rose is back bat work and thriving. “Being back at work isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Rose. “Not only was l able to attend my son’s wedding, but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Rosie to thank for it. To think, I might’ve missed that.” Rose held back tears.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its cause, it’s time to call Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold Wellness. Call (862) 622-6289 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit rosegoldwellness.com to take advantage of their new new patient offer, a $40 consult (normally $240).

The Benefits of UNPLUGGING

In our hyper-connected digital age, people are increasingly feeling the strain of screen addiction. Hours fly by as we scroll through feeds, answer emails, and play endless games. The consequences are not just limited to tired eyes; studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to insomnia, reduced productivity, and heightened stress. This has birthed the movement of “digital detox”—a conscious effort to reduce and manage screen time.

The benefits of unplugging are manifold. A digital detox can help restore sleep patterns, improve mental clarity, and foster deeper personal connections. Without the constant buzz of notifications, one can re-engage with the present moment and relish the beauty of the physical world.

Looking to embark on a digital detox? Here are some tips to get started:

Schedule Screen-Free Time

Designate certain hours of the day, like the first hour after waking and the hour before bed, as screen-free.

Physical Activities

Take up a hobby or sport that demands your physical presence.

Use Technology Wisely

Install apps that track and limit your screen time or remind you to take breaks.

Unsubscribe and Unfollow

Declutter your digital space by removing unnecessary emails and social media content.

Offline Connections

Prioritize face-to-face interactions, rediscovering the joy of conversation without distractions.

A balanced digital life enhances our overall wellbeing, giving us time to focus on what truly matters. Embrace the detox and recharge your mind and soul.

Protecting Your Skin in Autumn

While many people focus on sun protection during summer, autumn brings its own challenges for skin health. Cooler air, wind, and indoor heating can strip the skin of moisture, leaving it dry, itchy, or irritated. October is the perfect time to update your skincare routine.

Hydration is key. Drinking enough water and using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help restore and lock in moisture. Look for creams with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, or ceramides for extra nourishment.

Don’t pack away your sunscreen just yet—UV rays can still damage skin in the fall. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF to exposed areas, especially on sunny days.

Exfoliating once or twice a week can remove dead skin cells and allow moisturizers to penetrate better, but be careful not to overdo it. Adding a humidifier at home can also combat the dryness caused by indoor heating.

By making small seasonal adjustments, you can keep your skin healthy, supple, and radiant throughout autumn and into the colder months ahead.

DO:

• Moisturize daily with a rich, nourishing cream.

• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out.

• Use sunscreen—even on cloudy fall days.

• Add a humidifier indoors to combat dry air.

• Gently exfoliate once or twice a week.

DON’T:

• Skip SPF just because it’s cooler outside.

• Over-exfoliate, which can irritate and dry out skin.

• Take overly hot showers—they strip away natural oils.

• Ignore your lips and hands, which dry out quickly.

• Rely on summer lotions that may be too light for fall.

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures begin to dip, cold and flu season makes its return. The good news? With a little preparation, you can give your immune system the support it needs to stay resilient through the fall and winter months.

Start with Nutrition. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is your first line of defense. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, spinach, and broccoli are packed with Vitamin C, while nuts, seeds, and beans provide zinc—both essential for immune health. Don’t forget fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut, which supply probiotics to support gut health, a key player in immunity.

Stay Active. Regular exercise improves circulation, reduces stress hormones, and enhances immune response. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity most days, whether it’s brisk walking, cycling, or yoga.

Prioritize Rest and Stress Management. Sleep is when the body repairs itself and produces infection-fighting cells. Adults should target 7–9 hours per night. Likewise, mindfulness practices such as meditation or deep breathing can keep stress— which weakens immunity—in check.

Don’t Skip Preventive Care. Annual flu shots and updated COVID-19 vaccines remain one of the most effective ways to reduce serious illness. Washing hands frequently, avoiding close contact when sick, and keeping your home wellventilated further reduce risk.

By weaving these small but powerful habits into your daily routine, you’ll give your body the best defense against seasonal illness—helping you stay healthy, energized, and ready to enjoy the fall.

WINGS Cancer Support for Women

Women Inspiring Nurturing Giving Strength and Support (WINGS) is a cancer support group for women that meets once a month. It was started by a group of women in 2010, who met each other through a holistic nurse at RWJ Barnabas Health/Cooperman Barnabas Medical Canter, while they were undergoing Cancer treatment.

WINGS offers educational programs in the healing arts and group support to help regain emotional, physical and spiritual health. The programs include educational and holistic topics, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. All monthly programs are free of charge. Their mission: To provide a positive environment for women with any kind of cancer—before, during or after treatment—to alleviate stress and anxiety, through the healing arts.

The first half of each meeting is devoted to sharing a holistic modality with the group. Each month a different presenter will demonstrate his/her program. It is a

holistic sampler of a sort. The programs are led by people who have made the Healing Arts their passion and graciously share their knowledge and inspiration. Each program is unique and will run for about an hour and 15 min. The second half of the evening is dedicated to sharing support, where women may talk with others who have had similar experiences. All are welcome to speak but there is no pressure if someone wants to just sit back and listen. It is a very relaxed and warm atmosphere.

Women diagnosed with cancer are under a great deal of stress and anxiety. Experiencing and learning some new tools to use, as simple as a breathing meditation, guided imagery, and a gratitude list, or more advanced skills such as reiki, journaling or body movements, can help restore balance and harmony back into their lives. The meetings are filled with sharing, laughter, love and sometimes tears, which are, of course, healing.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Empower Yourself with KNOWLEDGE and ACTION

BBreast cancer can develop in any part of one or both breasts, and it stands as the most prevalent cancer among women in the US, ranking as the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths.

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, certain risk factors—like being female, age, personal or family history, and inherited genetic changes—are beyond our control. However, you can take proactive steps to reduce your risk. Limiting alcohol consumption, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight are all effective strategies to help lower your chances of developing this disease.

Early detection is crucial: the sooner breast cancer is identified, the better the prospects for successful treatment. The American Cancer Society recommends the following screening guidelines for women at average risk:

• Women aged 40 to 44 may choose to begin annual mammograms.

• Women aged 45 to 54 should have a mammogram every year.

• Women aged 55 and older can opt for mammograms every two years, or continue annual screenings.

• Women at high risk should consult their healthcare provider about the need for screening MRI and mammograms.

From Paris to Essex County: A Conversation with Designer Karen Naithe

KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS ARE WHERE THE RHYTHM OF DAILY LIFE HAPPENS—MORNING COFFEE, BEDTIME ROUTINES, FAMILY DINNERS, AND LATE-NIGHT CONVERSATIONS. FOR DESIGNER KAREN NAITHE, THEY ARE ALSO THE MOST FASCINATING SPACES TO SHAPE. AFTER YEARS OF DESIGNING KITCHENS AND BATHS IN PARIS AND ACROSS EUROPE, SHE HAS MADE ESSEX COUNTY HER HOME, BRINGING A FRESH YET TIMELESS PERSPECTIVE TO LOCAL INTERIORS.

HHow did you first find yourself in kitchen and bath design?

Karen: My background is in interior design, but very early on I realized kitchens and bathrooms had a special pull for me. They’re where life really happens. When you design them well, you don’t just create a beautiful space—you make someone’s daily routines easier, more comfortable, more enjoyable.

You’ve designed hundreds of spaces in Paris and across Europe. How does that experience shape the way you approach homes in Essex County?

Karen: The European perspective taught me to focus on longevity. A kitchen isn’t something you replace every few years—it should be timeless and practical. Essex County homes are wonderful because they’re so varied. Historic houses have quirks that challenge creativity, while modern homes allow for big, open concepts.

What design trends are resonating most with homeowners right now?

Karen: People want warmth and comfort. After years of gray, there’s a shift to warm neutrals, wood tones, and natural stone. In bathrooms, spa-like features such as heated floors, oversized showers, and layered lighting are very popular.

What are a few small touches you think instantly elevate a room?

Karen: Lighting is everything. Layer task lights, pendants, and under-cabinet strips for both atmosphere and practicality. Pullout cabinetry in kitchens changes daily life, and fresh flowers or greenery bring warmth instantly.

Do you see differences between how homeowners in Essex County think about their spaces compared to Europe?

Karen: In Europe, efficiency is everything because space is tight. Here in Essex County, there’s more room to play with, which is exciting, but the goal is the same: to create spaces that feel authentic to the people living in them.

If you could design your own dream kitchen and bath, what would be non-negotiable?

Karen: Heated floors in the bathroom—New Jersey winters demand it! And in the kitchen, pull-out cabinetry. It’s simple, but it makes a huge difference.

What excites you most about working here in Essex County?

Karen: The mix of old and new. I love designing for homes with history and character as much as modern builds. And above all, I love the community—it feels warm and welcoming. Design is a partnership. When the space reflects the people who live there, that’s when it really works.

Is It Time to Replace Your Roof?

YYour roof is a critical home component, providing protection and security for you and your family. Over time, wear and tear can take its toll, and it’s essential to watch for signs that indicate it may be time for a replacement.

If you notice water stains on your ceiling or walls or signs of water damage in your attic, your roof may be compromised. If not addressed, leaks can lead to significant structural damage.

Look at your roof from the ground to see if any shingles are missing, curling or cracking, or damaged. These issues

As roofs age, they can become less energy-efficient, allowing heat to escape during the winter and making your cooling system work harder in the summer. An increase in your energy bills could be a sign that your roof no longer provides adequate insulation.

While not necessarily a structural concern, moss, algae, or mold growths can trap moisture and cause shingles to deteriorate more quickly.

Over time, roofs can show visible signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, dents, or general deterioration. If your roof is

Bring Home the Fun and Games!

AAir Hockey is an excellent option for kids or adults; the fast-paced action gets everybody interested, and the competition holds entertainment for hours of play. Air Hockey tables come in different sizes and styles. Some have 90-degree corners that give a faster-paced rebound game, some have rounded corners that slow the puck down for a more precise feel; scoreboards have different looks, and some have audio when you score. Placement is important too! Some people like to have them with one side against a wall to save space, some like them in an open area that would allow for a ping-pong surface top that makes your air hockey a 2-in-1 game table!

keep in mind is the space with the billiard tables. They are usually 8’ x 4.5’, so they take up a lot of room, plus you need room for the cues as well, and they are generally 54” long. So, plan accordingly! Some offer dining tabletops, so the billiard table can double as overflow seating, especially around the holidays —a great option for when the whole family has get-togethers.

Billiard tables offer a classic game table experience. Dating back to the 15th century, billiards provides a great way to compete and showcase your expertise. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pool shark, billiard tables offer fun for everyone. One thing to

Ping Pong tables are a fantastic way to bring the whole family together. You can play oneon-one, team up with a partner, or hone your skills playing solo with the table in the half upright position. With different game styles and a variety of competitions to choose from, ping pong offers challenges for everyone. And with easy fold-up storage and roll-away wheelbases, storing it is simple and frees up space for other entertainment purposes!

Foosball offers another classic gaming experience for those who love fast-paced action. There are different styles of foosball play, including different numbers of goalies, defenders, and forwards. Some tables have telescoping rods that do not push out on the other side of the table, something we always recommend for families with little ones running around.

While the weather may not always cooperate, we can keep the summer vibes going with the classic Jersey Shore game, Skeeball! Made popular in the 1920s along the then-newly created boardwalks, SkeeBall offers hours of fun that anyone can participate in. With different games built into each Skeeball machine, kids from 3 to 103 can enjoy this timeless classic!

FINISHED BASEMENTS

The Ultimate Home Upgrade

DDomenic Mangiarelli, owner of Mangiarelli Contracting, says that finished basements are making a big comeback these days. “It’s one of the most cost-effective ways to add space to your home without the hassle of building an addition,” he explains. A finished basement not only increases your home’s square footage but also significantly boosts its value, often offering up to a 70% return on investment.

Unlike traditional additions that require new foundations and major disruptions to daily life, finishing a basement keeps the work contained. “The work doesn’t affect the family upstairs,” Mangiarelli says, adding that it’s a quicker, more convenient project that can be completed in weeks opposed to months for a traditional addition.

Another key benefit is energy efficiency. Since most basements are below grade, they naturally stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, helping homeowners save on heating and cooling costs. Plus, with existing plumbing being in the basement, adding features like bathrooms or wet bars becomes easier and more affordable.

Finished basements offer endless possibilities for customization. Whether you need a home office, gym, playroom, rec room, bathroom, wet bar, guest space, or even an area for a child returning from college, they provide the flexibility to meet your family’s evolving needs. Mangiarelli notes that many families are even opting for soundproof music rooms or home theaters, while others are creating outdoor access for convenience with backyard pools.

“Finishing a basement allows homeowners to increase their living space without the complexity and high costs associated with traditional home extensions,” Mangiarelli says, making it an ideal solution for those looking to expand efficiently and affordably.

AStop the Mulch Volcanoes: Protect Your Trees the Right Way

At K. Macken Landscaping, we often see a common but harmful practice in our communities: mulch volcanoes. These cone-shaped piles of mulch stacked high around the base of trees might look neat, but they can slowly kill even the healthiest tree.

Mulch is a great tool when applied correctly. A proper layer of mulch helps to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature, and adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. The key is how and where the mulch is applied.

Piling mulch against the tree trunk creates severe long-term damage:

• Rot & Disease: Constant moisture against the bark causes decay, fungus, and disease.

• Starved Roots: Thick piles cut off air, preventing roots from getting oxygen.

• Girdling Roots: Roots may grow into the mulch instead of outward, wrapping around the trunk and choking the tree.

• Pest Issues: Rodents and insects love damp mulch piles and often damage bark.

At K. Macken Landscaping, we recommend the “donut, not volcano” approach. This means applying mulch 2–3 inches deep in a wide, even layer, with a gap of 3-4 inches around the tree trunk. This creates a ‘donut’ shape of mulch, with the tree trunk at the center, instead of a ‘volcano’ shape that piles mulch against the trunk. Refresh mulch lightly each year instead of piling new layers on top.

At K. Macken Landscaping, we are more than just a service provider. We are your partners in maintaining a healthy and beautiful landscape. Our team is committed to educating clients and maintaining properties with best practices in mind. By avoiding harmful practices like mulch volcanoes, you can make a significant difference in the long-term health and beauty of your landscape.

Key Considerations When Upgrading Your KITCHEN APPLIANCES

TThe holidays are synonymous with feasts, family gatherings, and fond memories in the kitchen. If you’re contemplating a kitchen appliance upgrade before the festivities begin, here are some vital points to contemplate.

FUNCTIONALITY & SIZE:

Before you splurge, evaluate what appliances you frequently use and the size suitable for your family. A larger oven might be ideal for holiday turkeys, but ensure it fits seamlessly in your kitchen space.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY:

Modern appliances often come with better energy ratings. Upgrading might mean a higher upfront cost but can result in significant savings on your energy bills in the long run.

ADVANCED FEATURES:

Today’s appliances offer smart features like programmable settings, touch interfaces, and connectivity to mobile devices. Think about which features would genuinely enhance your cooking experience.

AESTHETIC & DESIGN:

Ensure your new appliances match your kitchen’s overall design and color scheme. Cohesive aesthetics can elevate the entire look and feel of the space.

INSTALLATION & WARRANTY:

Opt for brands and stores, like Reno’s Appliance, that provide reliable installation services. A proper installation ensures longevity, and a solid warranty offers peace of mind.

BUDGET:

Set a realistic budget. Remember, the most expensive is only sometimes the best. Prioritize what you need most and find a balance between quality and cost.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME WITH CURB APPEAL

TThere is some dispute over who first said, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” But what is never disputed is the importance of curb appeal—and how your home’s first impression impacts the sale of your home.

So, can curb appeal really affect your home’s sale price? According to a Michigan State University study, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Their study showed that a well-manicured exterior has a tremendous effect on the perceived value of a home, with values ranging from between 5%-11% higher. And homes with great curb appeal sell faster—which usually translates to higher dollar offers and less stress for sellers.

Here’s a few tips on maximizing the value of your home by improving your landscaping and the value of your home with curb appeal. This will help you get top dollar when you sell.

FRESHEN UP LAWNS AND BUSHES

• Freshen up lawns and edging. Your home will gain extra points with buyers if your landscape is well-manicured.

• Make sure the lawn is in top-notch condition—If there are bare spots, add seed or sod. Use lawn food and water well to keep grass green and healthy

• Prune overgrown, unruly shrubs. If bushes are leggy and unattractive, replace them

• Remove weeds from around bushes and trees and add a fresh layer of mulch

• Add colorful container gardens throughout the property

• Spruce up planting beds with colorful flowers

• Install a thick bed of mulch around gardens and shrubs

• Landscape the pathway to your house

• Add colorful annuals beneath trees or shrubs, or to line walkway or driveway

• Plant flowers underneath a new, upscale mailbox

CREATE LIFESTYLE AND FOCAL POINTS

• Add or update outdoor kitchens and dining spaces, patio areas, firepits or water features

• Create an inviting seating area in an empty space in your front yard using an Adirondack chair or hardscaped seating wall or bench

• Add outdoor lighting to define walkways, driveway, seating areas, focal points, and doorway

• Add attractive stone hardscaping features and specimen trees in prominent areas

ADD COLORFUL PLANTINGS AND FLOWERS

Crafting History

Victorian Restoration

VVictorian homes are rich in detail. Their carved wood mantels, intricate moldings and stained glass windows are full of character that can’t be replicated with off-the-shelf materials. A contractor skilled in restoration knows how to preserve these details. Restoring Victorian homes and their fixtures is less about construction and more about storytelling. It requires a balance of craftsmanship and practicality.

A contractor specializing in restoration understands that details like ornate wood trim and crown molding tell a story of another era. Restoring Victorian homes and their fixtures is a meticulous process. The process often begins with careful assessment, identifying which fixtures can be repaired, refinished, or reassembled. Wood trim may be stripped, sanded, and refinished or painted. When pieces are missing, carpenters craft faithful reproductions, ensuring continuity and character. Decorative plasterwork is meticulously patched and painted. Missing hardware can be sourced from architectural salvage or custom-made to match existing pieces.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

You Need a Home HVAC Maintenance Plan

YYour heating and cooling system is one of the most critical investments in your home. It keeps you comfortable yearround. Yet, it can also be expensive to repair or replace if something goes wrong. That’s why it’s crucial to have an HVAC maintenance plan.

An HVAC maintenance plan is a contract with a qualified company, such as Air Group, that regularly inspects and cleans your system. Think of it as a yearly tuneup for your heating and cooling. They will check your system’s components, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and blower fan. They will also clean the air filter and coils and lubricate moving parts.

When it’s done well, the result is a home that feels both timeless and livable—where historic charm is not just maintained, but celebrated.

Finding the right restoration contractor is key to preserving a home’s historic character. Gikas Home Improvement is a restoration specialist providing expert solutions tailored to the unique challenges of Northern New Jersey homes. Their team combines traditional techniques with modern expertise to restore the architectural beauty and intricate details that define your house, whether Victorian, Colonial, Craftsman or any other period home. Gikas Home Improvement ensures your space is restored to its original beauty.

Gikas Home Improvement 973-835-7775 | www.GikasContracting.com

There are many benefits to having an HVAC maintenance plan. Here are a few:

PREVENT COSTLY BREAKDOWNS. Regular maintenance can identify and fix minor problems before they become major breakdowns. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR SYSTEM. Proper maintenance can help your HVAC system last longer. This means you will have to replace it less often, which can save you even more money.

IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY. A well-maintained HVAC system runs more efficiently, saving money on your energy bills.

IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY. A clean HVAC system helps to filter the air in your home, removing dust, pollen, and other allergens. This can improve indoor air quality and make your home a healthier place to live.

If you don’t have an HVAC Maintenance plan, consider getting one with Air Group. It’s a small investment that can save you big money and headaches in the long run. It’s also a great way to protect your investment and keep your home comfortable year-round.

THE RISE OF WALLCOVERINGS and Why You Should Consider Them for Your Home

RRachel Kapner, President of Creative Wallcoverings & Interiors (CWI.Design), talks about the growing popularity of wallcoverings and why working with a design professional makes a difference. CWI.Design is known for creating interiors that reflect clients’ lifestyles through thoughtful design and expert guidance, handling everything from consultation to project management to ensure seamless results. From textured fabrics to custom digital prints, today’s wallcoverings offer various options to transform any room with minimal effort. Whether you want to make a bold statement or add subtle warmth, wallcoverings are a versatile, stylish solution.

What are some popular types of wallcoverings today, and how do they enhance a room?

Wallcoverings now include a range of materials like raffia, grasscloth, and textiles that add texture and warmth to a space. Raffia, for instance, creates a natural feel, while bold murals or large florals can make a statement. Even ceilings are getting attention, with wallpaper adding dimension and depth in unexpected ways.

What trends are popular in wallcoverings these days?

Bold patterns, saturated colors, and rich tones like jewel and earthy shades are trending. Geometric designs, large florals, and metallic finishes are popular for creating visual interest. Murals

that mimic hand-painted designs are also in demand. Textures like grasscloth continue to be favored for adding subtle sophistication.

How has wallpaper technology changed, and what makes it appealing now?

Advances in custom printing allow homeowners to create personalized designs by submitting images or patterns. This technology provides a new level of customization, while traditional hand-screened wallpapers still offer texture and richness. Digital prints offer more affordable options with vibrant colors.

Why work with a professional when choosing and installing wallcoverings?

A professional can help you select materials, patterns, and textures to complement your space. They ensure proper installation so the wallpaper adheres smoothly and can be easily removed. Plus, they balance bold designs and subtle accents to create cohesive, visually appealing spaces.

EV Charger Installations Should Only Be Done By a Licensed Electrician G

George Anderson, the owner of Anderson Electric, says there has been an uptick in home EV charger installations over the past two years. Anderson Electric installs 2-3 a week at people’s homes.

“Homeowners should not try to install an EV charger themselves,” he says. “EV chargers draw a lot of power. Most homes must have their existing service upgraded to at least 200 amps in order to accommodate an EV charger, and this should always be done by a licensed electrician.”

Having a home EV charger that is 240 volts is beneficial because it is more powerful than the type that come with electric vehicles and plug into existing 120 volt receptacles. They can take up to 16 hours to fully charge a vehicle, while a dedicated home EV charger only takes between 2-4 hours.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

In addition, having an EV charger installed at home is more convenient than having to drive to a public location and wait for hours for the vehicle to charge. “The convenience of being able to park your car in your garage while it charges overnight justifies the cost of having one installed at home,” says George.

Right now is a great time to have an EV charger installed because utility companies like PSE&G are offering up to a $1,500 rebate to do so. George says this is a great deal because an EV charger install can cost between $500 to $2500.00 depending on the degree of difficulty, with the average install being in the $500 to $1,500 range.

Improving Drainage Around Your Home

IIn recent years, our climate has seen more robust and recurrent storms. For homeowners, ignoring drainage can pave the way for severe problems. Poor drainage leads to water accumulation around the house, which can jeopardize the foundation, stimulate mold growth, and harm the landscape. As storms intensify, so does the risk of flooding. This can inflict costly damages, including ruined appliances and structural impairments.

However, the situation isn’t without remedy. First, French drains are invaluable. These trenches, filled with gravel, carry a perforated pipe that efficiently diverts water away from your residence.

River rock can also be strategically placed around the home’s perimeter. Its smooth, rounded stones allow water to flow over them easily, acting as a barrier and directing water away from your home.

Rain gardens serve a dual purpose, providing an aesthetic appeal while allowing rainwater absorption through plants. Native vegetation can further aid in soaking up surplus water. Ensuring the land around your home is graded correctly can also facilitate appropriate water flow.

AAs the days grow shorter with the approach of fall and winter, landscape lighting plays a key role in enhancing curb appeal, extending outdoor living, and improving security. Thoughtful landscape lighting design can transform a property, making it both beautiful and functional in the darker months.

To maximize curb appeal, focus on highlighting architectural features, plants, and pathways. Strategically placed lighting can accentuate your home’s façade while drawing attention to key landscaping elements, adding elegance and charm. For entertaining, gently illuminate patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens, creating a cozy atmosphere that allows family and friends to gather comfortably even as daylight fades earlier. A warm, subtle glow promotes relaxation and ensures the space is inviting.

When it comes to security, lighting around windows, doors, and other access points is critical. Properly positioned fixtures can deter potential intruders by eliminating dark hiding spots and improving visibility around the perimeter of the home.

For long-lasting, reliable installations, it is essential to use high-quality materials. Opt for durable brass or stainless-steel luminaires and energy-efficient LED sources to ensure your lighting withstands harsh winter conditions. LED technology offers longevity and consistent performance, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Additionally, ensure that all underground wiring and electrical components are installed according to national electrical standards for low-voltage lighting. Proper installation guarantees not only safety but also the long-term functionality of your system.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

By investing in quality landscape lighting and proper installation techniques, you can extend the beauty and security of your home year-round, even as fall and winter set in.

Care Tips to Preserve Natural & Engineered Stone Surfaces

NNatural and engineered stone surfaces add timeless beauty and luxury to a home. With a little thoughtful care, their finish can be preserved for years. For everyday cleaning, simply use a soft cloth with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap, followed by a clean cloth to prevent streaks. Spills—especially acidic ones like wine, citrus, or vinegar—should be wiped up immediately to avoid etching or staining.

When it comes to deeper cleaning of quartz countertops, follow the unique care guidelines provided by each quartz brand. Some allow bleach-based products, while others do not. For natural stone, pH-neutral cleaners are safest. Avoid harsh products like vinegar or bleach, which can damage sealers and finishes.

Because natural stones such as granite, marble, and quartzite are porous, they benefit from periodic sealing. While sealing doesn’t make stone stain-proof or prevent etching, it does add valuable protection against water, food, and oils. Frequency depends on both the stone type and sealer used, so follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Quartz, by contrast, is lower maintenance and does not require sealing.

Heat resistance is another factor to keep in mind. Quartz is not heat-proof, and damage from hot items is typically not covered by warranties. Natural stone withstands heat better but can still crack under rapid temperature changes, particularly at edges or cutouts. Protect all stone by using trivets, coasters, and cutting boards—and your surfaces will reward you with lasting beauty.

Security Measures After Losing Your Garage Door Opener

LLosing your garage door opener doesn’t just create an inconvenience— it can also be a security risk. If your garage door system allows for it, changing the access codes after losing your remote is a good idea. This prevents the lost remote from being used if it falls into the wrong hands.

Installing a garage door keypad can serve as an extra layer of security. Even if you lose your remote, you can still enter your garage by using a personal code.

If security is a major concern, upgrading to a smart garage door opener can provide additional peace of mind. Smart systems allow you to control your garage from your phone, monitor activity, and even receive alerts if someone tries to access the door. A garage door technician can help you program the new remote, deactivate old ones, and ensure your system is secure.

Responsible Waste Disposal

The careful disposal of waste is critical to Champion Waste of Montclair. “Not only are we interested in eliminating clients’ waste materials, but also disposing of them responsibly,” states Louis Mauriello, Champion Waste & Recycling Services owner.

Many clients ask ‘What items are recyclable?’ Among the many things that Champion Waste recycles are appliances, metal items, eating utensils, bed frames, metal shelving units, apparatus and extension type cords, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, faucets and pipes, and old car and truck batteries. “People find it interesting that one of the first things we do when removing these items from their homes is to cut appliances and other cords. These items are highly recyclable,” states Mauriello.

A common myth is that paints are recyclable. Paint items are messy and need to be disposed of properly. Champion can make special arrangements to dispose of paints with lids firmly attached. “When we handle waste disposal properly,” states Mauriello, “our mission is fulfilled. We help the environment and pass savings created by recycling onto the consumer.”

Practical Tips for Painting Your Home

PPainting a house can completely transform a space, but to achieve long-lasting, high-quality results, it’s important to follow some basic steps:

1. Prepare the surfaces properly Before applying paint, make sure to clean the walls and repair any cracks or imperfections. A smooth, dry surface allows the paint to adhere better.

2. Choose your colors wisely Light tones can make a space feel larger and brighter, while darker colors create a cozier atmosphere. Always test small samples before making your final decision.

3. Use quality tools

A good roller or brush makes a

big difference. You don’t need to overspend, but investing in decent tools will ensure an even application.

4. Paint coating application

It’s better to apply two coats instead of one. This prevents streaks and gives a more professional finish.

5. Protect and maintain your work

Cover furniture and floors before painting, and once finished, ventilate the area well. To preserve the color longer, gently clean the walls whenever needed.

A good paint job is not only about color but also about preparation and technique. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a fresh, beautiful finish in your home that lasts for years.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters Can Help

Prevent Electrocution

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet stops any electrical current “leakage” in its tracks before it has the chance to spark an electrical fire. They should be used in any area where water and electricity may come into contact.

When a GFCI senses current leakage in an electrical circuit, it assumes a ground fault has occurred. It then interrupts power fast enough to help prevent serious injury from electrical shock. Test GFCIs regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure they are working properly.

GFCIs are very important when it comes to wet or damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. This is because damp or wet areas are more prone to electrical shorts caused by water. Additionally, any areas that may be prone or exposed to rain or snow such as a garage or porch will also benefit highly from a GFCI outlet. If you live in an older home that could be prone to electrical oddities, GFCI outlets are a major asset for fire prevention and protection.

Embracing a New Era in Kitchen Cabinet Colors

TThe classic white kitchen has been the dominant style for nearly 20 years due to its timeless beauty. However, kitchen cabinet color trends have been moving away from stark white in favor of creamy beiges, taupes, and warm off-whites.

Natural woods have seen a resurgence in popularity, especially for islands and beverage centers. Recently, the most requested wood has been white oak, either in a light stain or natural finish. Walnut cabinets and accents are also in high demand because of the medium wood tone and graining that give a richness and depth to a kitchen.

For those wanting to inject some color into their kitchen cabinetry, blues and greens are still the accent colors of choice, but the shades of both are getting darker and

moodier. Deep navy blue and nearly black greens are having a moment, as well as charcoal grey.

New on the color horizon are terracotta, clay tones, and warm browns. These hues bring a cozy, grounded feel when paired with neutrals or natural textures.

Whatever your color preferences are, the 2026 cabinet colors are all about emotional warmth, nature, and contrast. Think less about extremes and more about color and textural balance. The kitchen is the most used room in your home, and ultimately it should be a reflection of you and not the “trends” of the moment.

SERVICE

I

In last month’s column, I shared the five secrets from The Adventures of Little Billy… IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE. This month, I want to go deeper—breaking each secret into its own column, because the lessons are just as meaningful for adults as they are for children.

When Lawrence T. Owl tells Little Billy, “Help all the animals that you see and you will find the magic tree,” he’s really teaching us about the power of service. Whether in business or in life, when we put others first—when we make it our mission to help—good things have a way of coming back. Our rewards in life are always in direct proportion to the service we give.

What Is Service?

At its core, service is simple: an act of helpful activity. But true service goes beyond just giving time or money. It’s about bringing your energy, talents, knowledge, and experience to make the lives of others better.

Service means showing up fully—wherever you are. If you’re a gas station attendant, it’s greeting customers with warmth and giving 110 percent. If you’re the CEO of a corporation, it’s leading with integrity and caring about the people you serve. The position doesn’t matter—the principle does.

Life isn’t meant to be lived selfishly. The key to success is shifting the question from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” Whenever you feel stuck, it’s often because your focus has turned inward. The moment you redirect that focus outward—toward helping others—you’ll find everything flows back to you, often tenfold. The greater your impact, the greater your rewards.

A Legend About the Spirit of Giving

There’s an old story about a wanderer in the desert who discovered a spring of clear, cool water. He filled a jug and set out on a long journey to bring this gift to his king. By the time he arrived days later, the water had grown hot and stale.

The king tasted it, smiled, and offered the wanderer heartfelt thanks. Those in the court rushed to sample it too—but when they did, they spat it out in disgust. “How could you smile and give thanks,” they asked the king, “when the water was spoiled?”

The king replied, “It was not the water I tasted, but the spirit in which it was given.”

As President Calvin Coolidge once said: “No person was ever honored for what he received; honor has been the reward for what he gave.”

Next month, stay tuned for Bosco the Bear’s message on Attitude.

“There are some materials that should be removed from our regular waste stream because of their hazardous nature. Our collection days provide our residents a place to properly and safely dispose of contaminants, protecting our precious environment for future generations.
