Love, Loss and a Father’s Dementia
Livingston Resident Helps Voters Research Candidates
L
ivingston native Emilio DiGregorio’s memoir Bad Company, available on Amazon, began with a gap on the shelf: most dementia books he found were instruction manuals. He wanted a fly-on-the-wall account of what families experience behind closed doors. Frank DiGregorio, left, with his son Emilio, the author of his memoir.
“They dont tell you how it breaks you; not once, but a thousand times”
The book follows his father’s final year. Frank DiGregorio was a longtime Livingston OB-GYN at RWJBarnabas who volunteered and taught Italian and opera at the community center. As dementia turned a strong patriarch into someone his family barely recognized, DiGregorio and his sisters cared for him at home, brought in help, and eventually moved him into memory care.
What they found: impossible decisions, guilt, heartbreak, more laughter than expected, and the people who showed up. A candid father-son story about responsibility, loss, and how the worst year can reveal the best in people. Page 3 - Bad Company Emilio DiGregorio
Cedar Grove Resident Receives a Lasting Legacy from Montclair State
A
legendary name in Montclair State University football history now has a permanent place on the field. The university has renamed its historic football facility Rick Giancola– Sprague Field, honoring the longtime head coach whose career shaped generations of Red Hawks studentathletes. The dedication took place on September 3, 2026, during Montclair State’s season opener against the United States Merchant Marine Academy, combining the start of a new season with a celebration of one of the program’s most influential figures.
ivingston resident Sudeep Amin is turning voter apathy and frustration with politics into KYC.Vote, a free website that helps voters make informed choices. Users enter their ZIP code to see federal ballot candidates, select issues that matter to them, and get matched to candidates accordingly. They can also compare up to four candidates’ side by side. The site covers all 50 states and offers Spanish translation. Sudeep wants to provide relevant information free of campaign spending, attack ads, or misinformation, while giving lesser-known candidates equal visibility. He also wants to preserve candidates’ positions so voters can later compare campaign promises with actual performance in office. Sudeep believes KYC.Vote may be especially useful during primaries, when voters choose their party’s nominee. He is seeking grants to fund data and expand coverage to state and local races.
Livingston Student Shines a Spotlight on Careers Beyond College
H
Rick Giancola (left) with Bill Johnson, a retired defensive coordinator who served under Giancola for 15 years.
Giancola spent 40 seasons at Montclair State, building a legacy that extends far beyond the football field. Before his retirement, he became the active wins leader in NCAA Division III football, finishing with 260 victories, 12 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championships, and nine NCAA tournament appearances. Now, his name will stand alongside Sprague Field, a landmark that dates back to the 1930s. The renaming recognizes Giancola’s accomplishments as a coach and his lasting influence on the studentathletes, colleagues, alumni, and fans who have been part of the Red Hawks community. For generations to come, every game played at Rick Giancola–Sprague Field will remind visitors of a coach whose dedication, leadership, and commitment left an enduring mark on Montclair State football. 10 | Suburban Essex | October 2026

udson Horowitz, a Livingston High School senior, is spotlighting career paths that often receive less attention. Through his Instagram page, @tradetracks2025, Horowitz interviews people working Hudson Horowitz in skilled trades and shares how they entered their fields, what their jobs involve, and the training required. He has interviewed several tradespeople so far and plans to continue expanding the project. The idea for Trade Tracks grew out of his own questions about life after high school. Growing up in a collegefocused community, Horowitz, who describes himself as very hands-on and enjoys working on home improvement projects, wondered what options existed for someone considering a path other than college. Through the project, Horowitz says he has discovered far more trade careers and pathways than he realized existed. He has also learned that apprenticeships and on-the-job training can provide more direct routes into many careers. Follow Trade Tracks on Instagram at @tradetracks2025.

Livingston Native Turns Lifelong Ties to Ukraine into a Lifeline BY JACKIE SCHATELL
That phone call led to Compassion Connection UA. Since March 2022, Bidiak has worked to meet the constantly changing needs of those serving on the front lines, sending boots, jackets, field showers, sleeping bags, portable ultrasound machines, defibrillators, generators and other essential supplies. But one request remains constant: vehicles. “Vehicles evacuate wounded soldiers, deliver food and water, and move critical equipment,” Bidiak said. “And sometimes, a vehicle can be destroyed after just one mission.” To date, Compassion Connection UA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has shipped nearly 15 tons of humanitarian and medical aid, purchased 52 vehicles—including ambulances and delivery trucks—and raised nearly $700,000. Because Bidiak remains in direct contact with soldiers and commanders across multiple battalions, the organization can respond quickly when urgent needs arise. The work became even more personal when Bidiak traveled to Ukraine in May to receive the Woman of the Third Millennium Award. While in Kyiv, she met with soldiers and commanders, including Nazar Bokii, a young soldier who lost both hands and an eye after being injured by an enemy drone. Compassion Connection UA has helped support his ongoing rehabilitation, including weekly procedures to remove shrapnel from his face. Meeting Bokii in person, Bidiak said, made years of fundraising, packing boxes, arranging shipments and answering late-night calls suddenly tangible. As international attention shifts elsewhere, Bidiak continues to remind supporters that Ukrainian families, soldiers and children remain caught in a war defined by air raids, separation, injury and loss.

For Lada Bidiak, the war in Ukraine has never been a distant headline. It has always been personal. Born in Livingston to Ukrainian parents, Bidiak grew up speaking Ukrainian at home and maintaining a strong connection to both her heritage and her American identity. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, she felt helpless—until a longtime friend in Ukraine, who had joined the territorial defense, called to ask for help obtaining medical supplies.

Those who wish to help can donate at CompassionConnectionUA.org. Bidiak also welcomes letters and drawings for soldiers on the front lines—small reminders that they have not been forgotten.

Verona Designer Makes Living Joyfully Her Signature Style
A
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
At nearly 70, Arlinda McIntosh has no interest in being told how someone her age should dress, act, or have fun. The Verona clothing designer would rather put on a bold skirt, head to Verona Park for the swings, jump rope with friends, or even play hide-and-seek. That sense of joy runs through McIntosh’s life and her longtime brand, Sofistafunk. She has spent more than four decades designing and sewing clothing, with clients including Faith Evans, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah and Yvette Nicole Brown. Yet McIntosh resists putting celebrities on a pedestal. “Everybody is a celebrity to me,” she says. Her philosophy is captured by “Lola,” a figure she created whose name stands for “Living Out Loud Audaciously.” To McIntosh, that means refusing to let age, size, or other people’s expectations determine how someone should live. Her fashion shows feature real people of different ages, races, heights, sizes, and body types, and her colorful social media presence encourages women to be seen rather than fade into the background. For McIntosh, clothes are meant to carry joy and meaning. Her signature Gathering Skirt was inspired by clothing worn by her mother and other women working in North Carolina cotton fields.
Arlinda McIntosh
More recently, she created the Memory Skirt, incorporating photos, fabrics, and personal details to celebrate people’s lives while raising awareness about gut and cognitive health, a cause connected to memory challenges experienced by her mother and grandmother. She also designs sustainably, repurposing scraps so less than 1% becomes waste. McIntosh has also heard from women undergoing chemotherapy who told her that wearing her skirts helped lift them during treatment. And the fun extends beyond fashion. Through Camp Sofistafunk, McIntosh brings women together online and in-person for games, rapid-fire questions, prizes, and fireside chats. Her message is simple: growing older does not mean growing quieter. McIntosh even created her own award, the “IDQ Award,” meaning “I Didn’t Quit.” It is fitting for a woman whose work is not simply about what people wear, but how boldly and joyfully they choose to live. An award-winning historian and author, Caggiano has written two books about paranormal experiences at historic sites, including Legends and Hauntings of the Jersey Bayshore. Expert Plow and Landscape Grows Through 21 Years of Hands-On Service BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY BART GORIN
L
Long before Expert Plow and Landscape became a full-service landscaping company, 15-year-old Spencer Palmer worked at Dubrow’s Nursery and discovered just how much he enjoyed helping customers improve their homes. That early interest led him to study horticulture at County College of Morris and eventually, begin snow plowing. Customers were so pleased with his work that they started asking him to handle their landscaping, too. Twenty-one years later, Expert Plow and Landscape has grown largely through word of mouth. Palmer credits that growth to clear communication, attention to detail and staying personally involved. “I am always on location when we are doing big projects,” he said. “We treat each property as if it were our own.” That attention often starts with details homeowners may not notice on their own. Palmer carefully looks at the pieces of a project - whether planting beds are clean, edging is crisp and weeds are properly controlled. He also considers the bigger picture: how an aging patio, tired landscape or underused outdoor space can be transformed. Some of Palmer’s favorite projects are complete backyard transformations. Palmer especially enjoys redoing older patios, redesigning the layout and adding thoughtfully selected plantings that bring the entire space together. “I love doing plantings – putting it all together in my head and then seeing it come to life in the final product,” he said. The company’s services range from lawn care and seasonal maintenance to patios, pavers, drainage, plantings, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and snow removal.
Spencer Palmer, Owner
As fall approaches, Palmer encourages homeowners not to stop thinking about their lawns. Aerating and overseeding now, he said, can make a major difference come spring. “You always want to have that beautiful green lawn in the spring,” he said. When winter arrives, Expert Plow and Landscape shifts into snow-removal mode for both residential and commercial properties. Through every season, Palmer’s goal remains simple: provide quality work, communicate clearly and be a company customers find easy to work with. Beyond the Checkup: Nova Wellness takes a deeper look at health
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY BART GORIN
Dr. Jennifer Knight and Dr. Chris Dr. Giorigio
A
AFTER YEARS AT THE HEIGHTS OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE, DR. JENNIFER KNIGHT AND DR. CHRIS DI GIORGIO BEGAN ASKING A DIFFERENT QUESTION: WHAT IF THEY COULD HELP PATIENTS BEFORE SOMETHING WENT WRONG?
The husband-and-wife physicians had built successful careers at Mountainside Medical Center. Dr. Knight was Director of the Adult Health Center, while Dr. Di Giorgio served as Chief of Cardiology and was a partner in private practice. Both valued traditional medicine and what it does exceptionally well, but saw an opportunity to complement it with something often difficult to provide within an insurance-based model: time, deeper investigation and a greater emphasis on prevention. That vision became Nova Wellness in Roseland. “A lot of what is neglected is the upstream stuff—the preventive
measures, the things that prevent you from developing disease rather than managing disease and mitigating complications,” says Dr. Di Giorgio. Nova works with people who feel healthy and want to stay that way, as well as those dealing with chronic conditions or unexplained symptoms. The goal is to identify each patient’s individual “blind spots” and create a highly personalized plan. That may involve genomics, advanced bloodwork, bodycomposition and metabolic testing, VO2 max assessments, and sophisticated cardiovascular testing. But testing for testing’s sake is not the objective.
October 2026 | SuburbanEssex.com | 37
“Every single thing that we do has multiple avenues of intervention,” says Dr. Di Giorgio. Depending upon the patient, those interventions may involve nutrition, exercise, supplements, hormones, medications or other therapies. For one patient, that approach proved life-changing. After two knee surgeries, a man in his late 50s came to Nova worried he would be unable to dance with his daughter at her upcoming wedding. Through a personalized plan that included regenerative medicine, his knee recovered—and he was able to enjoy that meaningful dance. He continued working with Nova on his overall health, and about a year into that journey, Dr. Di Giorgio began digging deeper into his cardiovascular risk. Testing revealed severe abnormalities, and a cardiac catheterization showed significant blockages in all three major coronary arteries. Within days, he underwent openheart surgery. “He was a heart attack or a cardiovascular event or death waiting to happen,” says Dr. Di Giorgio, who believes the early detection added years—and potentially decades—to the patient’s life. Women’s health is another major focus. Dr. Knight, who is board-certified in both Internal and Integrative Medicine, completed a two-year fellowship in integrative medicine and additional training in menopause care after recognizing a significant gap in her own traditional medical education.
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. At Nova Wellness, we built a much bigger toolbox. Dr. Di Giorgio 38 | Suburban Essex | October 2026
She frequently sees women experiencing fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, weight changes, hair loss and other symptoms during perimenopause and menopause—sometimes after those symptoms have been addressed separately by multiple specialists.
“Hormones are a piece of women’s health,” Dr. Knight says, emphasizing that nutrition, lifestyle, stress and other factors must also be considered. “This is a moment where you have to take care of yourself in a lot of different ways.”
We wanted to create an environment where you can really have true healing. Dr. Knight
That whole-person approach extends throughout Nova, where a multidisciplinary team includes a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, nurse practitioner and health coach. “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail,” says Dr. Di Giorgio. “At Nova Wellness, we built a much bigger toolbox.” Yet despite the advanced technology, Dr. Knight believes something less tangible is equally important. “We built this from such a place of purpose and love for what we do as physicians,” she says. They intentionally created a warm environment where patients feel heard and the people caring for them genuinely want to be there. “We wanted to create an environment where you can really have true healing,” says Dr. Knight. For the couple, Nova—meaning “new beginnings”—is ultimately about giving patients greater knowledge and more options for what comes next. Why Does the Simple Act of Standing Up Make
Your Heart Race? For people living with dizziness, fatigue, brain fog and unexplained heart palpitations, the answer may be a condition called POTS.
F
or most, standing up is something we do without thinking.
It’s akin to breathing or blinking, so automatic that we only notice when something goes wrong. But imagine if something as simple as getting to your feet caused your heart to suddenly take off, your vision to blur, your head to swim, your legs to weaken, and your body to feel like it had just sounded an alarm. Your pulse starts pounding. You feel lightheaded and shaky. Your vision gets strange. Your brain feels fuzzy, like the static on an old television when the antennas needed to be adjusted. And even after the episode passes, you’re just exhausted. For people living with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, better known as POTS, this can be everyday life.
A Year & A Half of Watching Her Life Shrink One young woman who came to Dr. Rosie Strelnick at Rose Gold Wellness had spent a year and a half, in her father’s words, ‘flopped out with fatigue all day.” Not tired. Not needing a nap. Flattened by the kind of exhaustion that had effectively put her life on pause. Brain fog made it difficult to follow conversations. Her family pursued blood work, specialists, and answers until she was eventually diagnosed with POTS. And even then, it was only a diagnosis, not a solution. More traditional treatment focuses on managing the symptoms: more fluids and salt, compression garments, and medications that only mask symptoms. These tools are just symptom management and too often fall short of giving those suffering their old life back. Her family wasn’t looking for a way to cope with POTS. They wanted their daughter back. And by the time they found Rosie, her father was skeptical. And understandably so. He had spent 25 years working in pharmaceuticals and medical device sales. He knew the healthcare system. He knew what had already been tried. And he wasn’tlooking for promises.
He was looking for something that would actually help his daughter. So Rosie got to work.
What is POTS and Why Choose Rose Gold Wellness for Treatment POTS is a form of dysautonomia, meaning the autonomic nervous system struggles to properly regulate functions like heart rate, blood pressure and circulation. When someone with POTS stands, the heart may begin racing in an effort to compensate. But the condition can affect more than heart rate. It can mean relentless fatigue. Brain fog. Dizziness. Weakness. Headaches. Nausea. Exercise intolerance. Even standing in line or taking a shower can become difficult. Rosie knows dysautonomia all too well. She experienced it herself from a young age and later built her professional work around treating complex chronic conditions, including POTS and dysautonomia, with personalized, integrative care. For patients looking beyond another prescription, Rose Gold Wellness offers a nonpharmaceutical solution focused on helping reduce the symptoms that interfere with daily life. For this young woman, the change was profound. — ADVERTISMENT —
An absolute answer to prayer. My daughter is thriving and has her life back. -A Rose Gold Wellness patient’s father That is the part that matters. Not a perfect lab report. Not another refill at the pharmacy. Her life. And the ability to participate in it again. POTS can make your world very small, very quickly. You begin calculating how long you’ll have to stand. Whether you’ll have enough energy. Whether your body will cooperate. But there may be another path forward. If your heart races when you stand, your energy has disappeared, or brain fog and dizziness have become part of everyday life, it may be time to look more closely at what your body is telling you. Because standing up shouldn’t feel like an emergency. And getting your life back is worth fighting for.

HYDROTHERAPY AND WELLNESS:
The Healing Power of Water
W
Water has long been associated with healing and rejuvenation. From ancient civilizations to modern-day wellness retreats, the therapeutic qualities of water have been revered and integrated into various healing practices. Hydrotherapy, the use of water in its various forms and temperatures, offers numerous health benefits that have stood the test of time. In exclusive spas, hydrotherapy treatments such as whirlpools, mineral baths, and steam rooms are offered, harnessing the power of water to soothe muscles, improve circulation, and detoxify the body. These treatments, often combined with aromatherapy or therapeutic salts, provide a sanctuary for relaxation and recovery. In a world increasingly seeking holistic wellness solutions, hydrotherapy stands out as a testament to nature’s ability to heal. Whether in the luxurious confines of a spa or the serene embrace of a mountain spring, water remains a potent force of restoration, making hydrotherapy a timeless tradition in the pursuit of well-being.

From Camera Lens to Cutting Edge Dr. Barry DiBernardo Keeps Innovation in Focus
L
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY BART GORIN
Long before Dr. Barry DiBernardo picked up a scalpel, he was behind a camera. As a teenage professional photographer, Dr. DiBernardo noticed clients often asked him to retouch their appearance. That planted an idea: instead of changing the photograph, what if he could help change what people wanted to see? That question led him to plastic surgery and still shapes his work as medical director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery in Montclair. Dr. DiBernardo entered private practice in 1991. For roughly 25 years, the practice has also been involved in clinical research and developing aesthetic technologies. Companies bring the ideas to him for testing and refinement, earning him the industry nickname “The Idea Man.” One example is Cellulaze, a laser-based cellulite treatment he helped develop. More recently, his team studied HALO TRIBRID, which combines multiple laser technologies to address pigmentation, wrinkles, pores, and skin laxity. Innovation extends to surgery. Dr. DiBernardo and Dr. Jason Pozner developed the SAS Facelift (“Skin Advancement Suture”), a technique designed to improve jawline definition and address sagging necks. In October, Dr. DiBernardo will present their experience with 300 cases at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons national meeting. He describes the technique as the fourth generation of a necklift approach dating to their original published research in 1995.

Advanced imaging is making consultations more precise. The practice evaluates facial features and skin concerns, then pairs those findings with each patient’s goals and preferences. With options ranging from aesthetic and med-spa services to advanced devices and surgery, Dr. DiBernardo said the practice recommends treatments based on what patients need, not simply what is available. The field is shifting, too. GLP-1 weight-loss medications have brought more patients seeking help for residual fat and loose skin after significant weight loss. Dr. DiBernardo is also exploring regenerative medicine and biologics through his research center. For Dr. DiBernardo, pursuing what comes next has kept the work exciting for more than three decades and continues to push New Jersey Plastic Surgery toward the future.

MORE THAN PINK Walk
A
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
After years without a North Jersey walk, Susan G. Komen is bringing its MORE THAN PINK Walk back to the area this October, gathering survivors, families, friends and supporters in West Orange to help fight breast cancer. For West Orange resident and Komen New Jersey Advisory Board member Susan Pizzano, the event is especially meaningful. She lost her mother to breast cancer at age 58 and has a strong family history of the disease. Years later, Susan was diagnosed with stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which was caught early. “I feel extremely lucky that I took it very seriously,” she said. Now retired, she joined Komen’s advisory board to give back and encourage others to know their family health history, understand their personal risk, and stay current with recommended screenings.
According to Komen New Jersey Executive Director Chelsea Grajales, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and men can develop the disease as well. Komen funds research while also helping patients access screening and diagnostics, financial assistance, transportation, childcare, and other support. The Komen Patient Care Center is a free service that can be reached by calling 1-877-465-6636 or emailing helpline@komen.org. The family-friendly North Jersey walk will include a tent village, opening ceremony, approximately a two-mile waterfront walk, and post-walk celebration. Registration is free, and participants may walk individually or create or join a team. Those who raise $100 will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

The move toward more sustainable living has gained traction in recent years with people looking to help the environment and their wallets. Gardening is a great hobby to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It’s fun, saves money on groceries, and helps you feel accomplished by eating something you grew. It also promotes healthy living, cooking at home, and eating more nutritious foods. When you grow your own food at home, you also know exactly what’s in it and how it was produced. Gardening can be difficult, especially outdoor gardening, because there are so many variables. This includes climate changes, unpredictable weather, and plants getting eaten by wildlife or pests. Indoor gardening allows you to grow veggies year-round in the comfort of your home, with a greater likelihood of success because you control the environment. This is also beneficial for those with little or no outdoor space to incorporate nature into their daily lives. Herbs, leafy plants, and microgreens are the most common edible plants for indoor growing. They generally do well with shallow soil because they’re smaller and don’t need as much space inside. They also don’t need as much sun and are easier to grow if you’re just starting out. Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. Exposure to nature and the accomplishment you feel from successfully starting a garden is also good for your mental health.

WINGS Cancer Support for Women
W
Women Inspiring Nurturing Giving Strength and Support (WINGS) is a cancer support group for women that meets once a month. It was started by a group of women in 2010, who met each other through a holistic nurse at RWJ Barnabas Health/Cooperman Barnabas Medical Canter, while they were undergoing Cancer treatment. WINGS offers educational programs in the healing arts and group support to help regain emotional, physical and spiritual health. The programs include educational and holistic topics, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. All monthly programs are free of charge. Their mission: To provide a positive environment for women with any kind of cancer—before, during or after treatment—to alleviate stress and anxiety, through the healing arts. The first half of each meeting is devoted to sharing a holistic modality with the group. Each month a different presenter will demonstrate his/her program. It is a
holistic sampler of a sort. The programs are led by people who have made the Healing Arts their passion and graciously share their knowledge and inspiration. Each program is unique and will run for about an hour and 15 min. The second half of the evening is dedicated to sharing support, where women may talk with others who have had similar experiences. All are welcome to speak but there is no pressure if someone wants to just sit back and listen. It is a very relaxed and warm atmosphere. Women diagnosed with cancer are under a great deal of stress and anxiety. Experiencing and learning some new tools to use, as simple as a breathing meditation, guided imagery, and a gratitude list, or more advanced skills such as reiki, journaling or body movements, can help restore balance and harmony back into their lives. The meetings are filled with sharing, laughter, love and sometimes tears, which are, of course, healing.

Fall Prevention for Seniors

Why Balance Matters
Call to advertise your business:
973-276-1688
THE JOB HAINES DIFFERENCE
Trips and falls can happen to anyone, but they are especially dangerous for older adults. Aging and common health conditions increase the risk of falling, and the consequences— such as fractures, concussions, or loss of independence— can be serious. That’s why balance and fall prevention are essential for senior well-being. As we age, three systems that help control balance may weaken: Somatosensory system: relays body position and movement. Vestibular system: located in the inner ear, helps regulate balance. Visual system: provides spatial awareness. Decline in any of these systems, combined with reduced muscle strength or medical conditions like Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis, raises fall risks. Physical therapy offers proven strategies to reduce fall risk. A therapist will evaluate your balance, gait, and home environment, then design a personalized plan. This may include balance, flexibility, and endurance exercises as well as hazard removal recommendations. Simple exercises can improve strength and stability: Weight shifting: Stand or sit with feet hip-width apart, lean side to side, and repeat. Single-leg stands: Hold onto a chair, lift one leg, and balance for a few seconds before switching sides. Tai chi: This gentle practice improves coordination, flexibility, and confidence. Balance and fall prevention program are designed to support seniors in staying safe, active, and independent. JAG Physical Therapy JAGPT.com

It’s Important to Put Your Wishes in Writing
P
Planning for the future isn’t just about finances or retirement. It’s also about ensuring your wishes are understood if you can’t speak or make decisions for yourself. Putting those wishes in writing can help provide clarity for you and peace of mind for the people you love. Advance care planning lets you document your preferences for medical treatment and identify someone you trust to make health care decisions on your behalf. A living will can outline the types of treatment you would or would not want in certain circumstances, while a health care proxy or durable power of attorney for health care designates someone to speak for you if you cannot. Why is this so important? Family members may not always know exactly what you would want. The National Institute on Aging notes that in one study, loved ones incorrectly predicted nearly one-third of end-of-life decisions. Documenting your wishes—and discussing them with family and your health care proxy—can reduce uncertainty and the emotional burden of making difficult decisions. Putting your wishes in writing also doesn’t mean they are set in stone. Your preferences can change as your circumstances, health, or values change. Experts recommend reviewing advance directives at least annually and after major life events.
Think about what matters most to you, have an honest conversation with those closest to you, choose someone you trust to advocate for you, and make sure the appropriate documents are completed and accessible. Taking these steps now can help ensure your voice is heard later, when you may not be able to speak for yourself.

Making the Most of Your Benefits MEDICARE: FIRST TIME ENROLLMENT AND UPDATING YOUR PLAN
T
BY GEORGE SOSA, PRESIDENT, THE SOSA INSURANCE GROUP
Turning 65 marks your eligibility for Medicare, but the process can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re enrolling for the first time or reviewing your current plan, knowing your options is essential. You don’t have to stay in a plan that no longer meets your needs. First-Time Enrollment Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Part A covers in-patient care, skilled nursing, home health care, and hospice. Part B covers outpatient services, doctor visits, preventive care, and therapies. Since Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything, many choose a Medigap supplement plan to help with deductibles and copays. These plans offer stable benefits and broad provider access. Another option is Medicare Advantage (Part C), offered by private insurers. These plans combine Parts A and B, often with added benefits like dental, prescription, vision, or fitness. Many have low or zero premiums and some plans have the flexibility of in and out of network providers.
If you delay enrollment without qualifying coverage, penalties may apply for both Part B and Part D. Updating Your Plan Medicare isn’t one-and-done. Each year, during Annual Enrollment (Oct. 15–Dec. 7), you can switch between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, or Part D drug plans. Review provider networks, costs, medications, and added benefits to ensure your plan fits your health and budget. If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you have another window—Jan. 1–Mar. 31—to change plans or return to Original Medicare. Medicare can be complex, but resources and guidance are available. As your health and needs change, your plan should, too. George Sosa is president of The Sosa Insurance Group. For free consultations, call 973-902-5445 or email info@thesosainsurancegroup.com
Prescription coverage is available through Part D drug plans, each with its own formulary. Starting in 2026, out-of-pocket costs are capped, with a $2,400 maximum set for 2027. New Jersey residents may also qualify for PAAD or Senior Gold programs to lower drug costs.

Refresh for the Holidays: Why Refacing Is the Smart Path to a High-End Kitchen
A
As the holidays approach, the kitchen takes center stage. It’s where family gathers, guests linger, and memories are made, and it’s also where an outdated look is hardest to ignore. The good news is that a beautiful new kitchen doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank or eating takeout for a month. If you love your layout and your cabinet frames are in good shape, there’s no reason to start over with all new. That’s why more homeowners are choosing cabinet refacing. KEEP THE FUNCTIONALITY, UPDATE THE LOOK Refacing keeps your sturdy cabinet boxes in place while new doors, drawer fronts, matching veneers, and hardware transform the look of the room. Your floor plan stays exactly where it is, which means no demolition, far less dust, and a kitchen you can keep using throughout the project. Most of our refacing projects are completed in less than five days.
AFTER
THE KITCHEN TUNE-UP DIFFERENCE A remodel can feel overwhelming, especially during the busiest season of the year. At Kitchen Tune-Up, our in-house team guides you through every choice at our Broad Street showroom and handles everything from design to installation. Book now and your kitchen can be ready for Thanksgiving, or for December gatherings if you’d rather wait until after the big day. Holiday dates are limited, so call or text to schedule your free consultation.
HIGH-END WITHOUT THE WAIT Refacing doesn’t mean settling. Today’s door styles and finishes deliver the look of a custom kitchen, from crisp Shaker and sleek slab doors to warm wood tones and rich, bold colors. Paired with designer hardware, the result feels entirely new and distinctly yours. A SMART INVESTMENT The numbers support it. According to the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, a kitchen update that keeps the existing cabinet boxes and replaces the doors and drawer fronts, along with a few other upgrades, recouped about 107% of its cost at resale in the Middle Atlantic region. A full midrange remodel with all-new cabinets recouped about 49%.

The Elite Approach Thoughtful Planning for Every Painted Space
A
At Elite Painting, thoughtful planning is central to every project. “From selecting the appropriate finish and colors to determining which architectural details deserve attention, professional guidance can help homeowners achieve a cohesive result that complements their home,” says Tony DiGrezia, owner of Elite Painting. Color consultants Hannah and Rebecca emphasize the importance of tailoring paint finishes to each space of the home.
They state, “The right finish can enhance a room’s appearance while also providing the durability and functionality needed for the way the space is used.” Flat or matte paint provides a soft, sophisticated appearance and works particularly well on ceilings and lowertraffic areas. Eggshell offers a subtle sheen while providing greater durability, making it a popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are easier to clean and stand up well to moisture and everyday wear, making them practical choices for kitchens, bathrooms, trim, and doors. But walls aren’t the only elements that deserve attention. Architectural details can add character and dimension to a space. Painting trim, doors, built-ins,
mantels, wainscoting, or an accent wall can make these features stand out. A contrasting color can draw attention to beautiful molding or a fireplace, while using a similar shade in a different finish can create a more subtle, sophisticated effect. When transforming a room, the professionals at Elite Painting know a beautiful result takes more than choosing a paint color. “The right finish and knowing where to use it can enhance a room’s appearance, highlight architectural features, and provide the durability needed for everyday living,” says DiGrezia. Fall Is the Perfect Time to Plan Next Summer
A
As summer winds down, homeowners often see their landscapes from a very different perspective. You remember the beautiful weekends when you wished you had more comfortable outdoor seating. The evenings that would have been perfect around a fire feature. The family gatherings when an outdoor kitchen, pavilion or larger patio would have made entertaining easier. Maybe the pool area needed more privacy, the landscaping lacked seasonal color, or the backyard simply never became the inviting outdoor living space you imagined. Those memories make fall one of the most valuable times of year to evaluate your property. Rather than waiting until spring—when everyone suddenly begins thinking about being outdoors again, fall gives you an opportunity to reflect on how you actually used your property throughout the summer. What worked? What felt unfinished? Where did you entertain? Where did you wish you had shade, privacy, lighting or a better connection between the house and landscape?
What would inspire you to enjoy your home and make it the ideal place to entertain…year after year? It is also an ideal time to begin conversations about larger landscape and outdoor living projects. Thoughtful
design takes time. Site planning, material selections, engineering, permitting and construction scheduling can all be addressed well before the next outdoor season arrives. A landscape designed around the way you truly live can include far more than beautiful plantings. Patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire features, pavilions, landscape lighting and thoughtfully planned gardens can work together to create an outdoor environment that feels like a natural extension of your home. Before this summer becomes a distant memory, take another look outside. The things you wished you had this year may be exactly where next year’s landscape plan should begin. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters Can Help Prevent Electrocution
A
A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet stops any electrical current “leakage” in its tracks before it has the chance to spark an electrical fire. They should be used in any area where water and electricity may come into contact. When a GFCI senses current leakage in an electrical circuit, it assumes a ground fault has occurred. It then interrupts power fast enough to help prevent serious injury from electrical shock. Test GFCIs regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure they are working properly. GFCIs are very important when it comes to wet or damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. This is because damp or wet areas are more prone to electrical shorts caused by water. Additionally, any areas that may be prone or exposed to rain or snow such as a garage or porch will also benefit highly from a GFCI outlet. If you live in an older home that could be prone to electrical oddities, GFCI outlets are a major asset for fire prevention and protection.

The Kitchen Changes That Actually Matter as You Get Older
W
We talk to many homeowners who have slowly stopped using certain cabinets. Not because they don’t need what’s inside, but because bending, reaching, and digging through a deep cabinet simply isn’t worth the hassle anymore. Accessibility matters more than storage space. Most kitchens have plenty of room. The problem is that much of it can be difficult to reach. Deep base cabinets and fixed half shelves often leave items hidden in the back, requiring you to kneel down or move everything in front just to find what you need. Out of sight quickly becomes out of mind. When you can’t easily see what’s stored in a cabinet, it’s easy to forget what you have, buy duplicates, or simply stop using that space altogether.
58 | Suburban Essex | October 2026
Bring the contents of the cabinet to you. Pull-out drawers and shelves can make a surprisingly big difference. Instead of reaching into the cabinet, everything slides out where you can see and access it. Everyday items become easier to reach, and previously wasted space becomes useful again. Reface instead of Replace. Improving functionality doesn’t necessarily mean replacing your cabinets. Pull-out storage can often be added directly to existing cabinetry, while cabinet refacing can give the kitchen a fresh look by updating the doors and drawer fronts without tearing everything out. If you’ve started avoiding certain cabinets because they’re inconvenient to use, pay attention to that. Sometimes a few thoughtful changes can make your kitchen considerably easier to live with for years to come.

Is Your Home Ready for the Colder Months?
H
Shorter days have a way of revealing which window treatments are working for your home and which ones may be ready for an update.
Have you ever noticed that as soon as the days get shorter, you start looking at your home a little differently? The windows that felt open and airy all summer suddenly feel a little too exposed once it’s dark at 5pm. Rooms you barely used all summer are back in the rotation. And those blinds you’ve been meaning to replace for the last five years? You’re looking at them every night again. Preparing your windows for the colder months doesn’t mean hanging heavy draperies throughout your home. The right window treatment should solve the problems of that particular room, while still looking like it belongs there. In a bedroom, that might mean a cellular or blackout shade that provides privacy, light control, and an added layer of insulation at the window. In a living or family room, layering a shade with drapery can add warmth and softness without sacrificing natural light during the day. And for large or hard-to-reach windows, motorization makes adjusting your shades as the light changes throughout the day almost effortless.
DESIGNER, HOUSE OF FUNK / PHOTOGRAPHER, MARK WEINBERG
Fall is also a good time to pay attention to what the sun has been doing to your home. UV exposure doesn’t disappear when summer ends, and the right treatments can help protect flooring, furniture, and artwork from fading. So, where do you start? Take a walk through your home after sunset. Which rooms suddenly feel too exposed? Which windows feel unfinished? Where are you noticing glare, fading or a chill near the glass? And which treatments simply look like they’ve been there a little too long? Those answers will tell you a lot. No single window treatment works for every room. The best solution is the one that works for the window, the space, and, most importantly, the way you actually live in it.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS
Maximizing Space in a Small Kitchen Renovation
A
A small kitchen can feel surprisingly spacious with the right renovation strategy. The key is to make every inch work harder while keeping the room functional, comfortable, and visually open. Before you plan out your kitchen, take stock of what you have and plan to purge unused items. Also consider if there are items you would like to have more available in your new kitchen that you currently store elsewhere. There is a plethora of options for customizing cabinets. Specialized inserts can transform awkward spaces into useful storage. Roll-out pantry shelves, drawer organizers, corner cabinet solutions, and pull-out cabinets make it easier to access pots, pans, dishes, and cooking supplies. Maximize wall space by extending wall cabinets to the ceiling to gain valuable storage. Incorporating a countertop wall cabinet with an appliance garage can keep countertops clear without sacrificing storage capacity. For kitchens with higher ceilings, you can create visual interest and a more open feeling by adding a glass transom with interior lighting to the wall cabinets.
Some smaller kitchens have space for an island or peninsula, which is a great place for added storage. Even a narrow island can provide not just additional counter space and seating, but hidden storage space. Unused corners or the end of a peninsula or island is the perfect place to gain much needed cabinet space. Small kitchens can be challenging to create visual openness. Light-colored cabinetry, reflective surfaces, glass-front doors, and simple flooring can make a compact kitchen feel larger. Combine hanging light fixtures with recessed ceiling lights and under-cabinet lighting to enhance the décor and provide ample light. Ultimately a successful small-kitchen design isn’t about adding more, it’s about using the available space intelligently. A knowledgeable kitchen designer can create an open and inviting kitchen design for every size space. With thoughtful storage, efficient appliances, and a carefully planned layout, even the smallest kitchen can become functional, organized, and inviting. Strong Roofs, Stronger Communities

A new roof can do more than protect a home—it can also support the community. American Roofing is helping homeowners make a meaningful contribution to local high school seniors through its Project Graduation campaign. Project Graduation is a community-supported, alcohol- and drug-free celebration for graduating high school seniors. The program gives students a safe, memorable way to celebrate this important milestone together. Here’s how American Roofing’s campaign works: Homeowners planning a full roof replacement can schedule their project with American Roofing. After the roofing project is completed, they should share a photo of the finished project on social media and tag American Roofing. The company will then donate to Project Graduation on behalf of qualifying homeowners. The campaign offers homeowners a simple way to combine an important home improvement project with an opportunity to give back. It also supports local graduating seniors as they celebrate their achievements with their classmates.
With a new, durable roof overhead and a contribution benefiting Project Graduation, homeowners can feel good knowing their investment is helping strengthen the community. Schedule a full roof replacement with American Roofing, share a photo of your finished project on social media, and tag American Roofing to take part. It’s a reminder that even everyday home improvement projects can have a positive impact beyond the home—and that together, local businesses and residents can help build brighter futures for the next generation. Unlock Your Home’s Sale Potential: Declutter First!

When preparing a home for sale, homeowners often focus on painting, landscaping, and repairs. Clearing out what has accumulated over the years can also make a big difference. Removing unwanted furniture, household items, boxes, and debris can make rooms feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting to prospective buyers. “A clean, uncluttered home allows buyers to focus on the property itself rather than the belongings inside it,” says Louis Mauriello of Champion Waste. “When a home is filled with excess furniture or years of accumulated items, it can be difficult for buyers to visualize how they would use the space.” Start by viewing each room through a

buyer’s eyes. Then remove furniture that makes spaces feel crowded, clear out closets and basements, and organize garages and storage areas. Don’t overlook attics, sheds, or outdoor areas, where unwanted items can quickly accumulate. “Many homeowners don’t realize how much they have until they start preparing to move,” Mauriello explains. “Taking care of unwanted items before the house goes on the market can make the entire selling process easier.” A professional cleanout can be particularly helpful when a home has accumulated large or bulky items that are difficult to remove independently. Clearing those items can also make
Louis Mauriello it easier for professional cleaners, photographers, contractors, and movers to do their jobs. “A little preparation can go a long way,” says Mauriello. “The goal is to present the home in a way that helps potential buyers see its possibilities.” Before listing, take a final walk-through and ask: Does every room feel open, clean, and functional? If not, then a thorough cleanout may be the first step toward making a strong first impression. Champion Waste PO Box 345, Montclair | 973-744-6766 www.championwasteremoval.com

What Homeowners Should Consider When Replacing Windows

RWC Windows, Doors, Kitchens & Baths is a third-generation, family-owned and operated remodeling company serving North Jersey since 1959. The company is owned by President Anthony Giampapa III and Vice President Eric Garcia, with several family members working alongside a team specializing in windows, doors, kitchens, and baths. There are a lot of decisions involved in replacing windows—energy efficiency, materials, operation, ventilation, natural light, style, and how the windows complement the architecture of the home. The best window isn’t necessarily the trendiest or most expensive one; it’s the one that performs well, looks right, and fits the homeowner’s needs and budget. A great product is only as good as the way it is measured, installed, and supported afterward. Homeowners

There are so many choices that homeowners can easily feel overwhelmed. We want to be the resource they can trust to help them make the right decision for their home,” says Giampapa. The relationships RWC builds with customers are the most rewarding part of the job. “Remodeling requires a tremendous amount of trust, so seeing someone happy with both the finished project and their overall experience means

Planning Ahead for a Beautifully Lit Landscape
A
As summer winds down, homeowners see their landscapes differently. You remember evenings that ended early because the patio went dark, pathways you couldn’t see after sunset, and a pool that disappeared once the sun went down.
A landscape lighting plan built around how you truly live can include far more than spotlights. Path lighting, uplighting on trees and architecture, step and wall lights, water features illumination, and smart controls can work together to make Your space feels as beautiful after dark as it does in daylight.
Garden beds faded into shadow by 8pm, and the backyard never quite became the space you imagined after dark. Those memories make fall the best time to evaluate how your property performs at night.
Before this summer becomes a memory, take another look outside once the sun goes down. The evenings you wished felt brighter this year may be exactly where next year’s lighting plan should begin.
Rather than waiting until spring, reflect now: where did you wish you had more glow, better visibility, or a little more drama? Which trees, walls or architectural details deserved to be highlighted but were left in the dark? It’s also the ideal time to plan a larger lighting design. Fixture selection, transformer sizing, wire runs, zoning and controls all take time, and are better addressed now then rush together before your first gathering.

Practical Tips for Painting Your Home
P
Protect and maintain your work
Painting a house can completely transform a space, but to achieve long-lasting, high-quality results, it’s important to follow some basic steps:
Cover furniture and floors before painting, and once finished, ventilate the area well. To preserve the color longer, gently clean the walls whenever needed.
Prepare the surfaces properly Before applying paint, make sure to clean the walls and repair any cracks or imperfections. A smooth, dry surface allows the paint to adhere better.
Choose your colors wisely Light tones can make a space feel larger and brighter, while darker colors create a cozier atmosphere. Always test small samples before making your final decision. 64 | Suburban Essex | October 2026
Use quality tools A good roller or brush makes a big difference. You don’t need to overspend, but investing in decent tools will ensure an even application.
Paint coating application It’s better to apply two coats instead of one. This prevents streaks and gives a more professional finish.
A good paint job is not only about color but also about preparation and technique. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a fresh, beautiful finish in your home that lasts for years. Twenty Years of Fresh, Premium Chinese Cuisine in Montclair
F
For 20 years, T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine has brought to Montclair a fresh, premium take on Chinese favorites. Owner Thomas Ma, whose family’s restaurant roots date to 1987 when they opened their original T.S. Ma in New York, blends authentic Chinese cooking with techniques from his French culinary training. Mr. Ma founded T.S. Ma to challenge the stereotype that Chinese takeout is oily and heavy. He and his son, Christopher, refine the menu daily, focusing on authentic flavors with a lighter, modern approach. Shanghai Ribs
At T.S. Ma, chicken and vegetable stocks and over 20 house-made sauces are prepared daily, most without refined sugar or starch. Cooking methods emphasize grilling, steaming and light sautéing with fresh garlic and ginger. The kitchen does not use canned vegetables and relies on premium ingredients such as Black Angus beef, fresh produce, aged chinese vinegar, premium soy sauce and natural sweeteners like maple syrup to create balanced, flavorful dishes. “I am always thinking about how to give the best value to my customers by giving them the freshest, most authentic Chinese food,” says Mr. Ma.
For Mr. Ma, service is as important as food. He emphasizes proper staffing, reasonable wait times and careful presentation across dining, takeout, delivery and catering. This commitment has helped T.S. Ma remain a staple in a competitive market.
Shrimp with Ginger and Scallions
The menu ranges from American Chinese classics to Shanghai style home cooking. Signature dishes include General Tso’s chicken, sesame chicken, chicken with broccoli and Shanghai style pork ribs, along with newer
offerings like Szechuan diced chicken and traditional barbecue ribs. Dishes can be customized from spicy to mild, including lighter preparations for children, seniors and guests seeking less oil or sauce. Vegetarian, low salt and gluten free dishes are also available.

DIAMOND MINDS
We All Sell Ice Cream BY BARRY FARBER
S
Sometimes the most powerful lessons in life don’t come from something new. They come from something we learned years ago—and suddenly realize we still need today.
Instead of forcing the sale, Covell stopped talking about copiers. He simply asked, “Tell me about your business.”
In 1992, I wrote my first book, “State of the Art Selling” originally published by Prentice Hall and now available on Audible. It featured stories from some of the most successful salespeople, entrepreneurs, CEOs and customerservice professionals I had met.
The man explained that he distributed ice cream to restaurants and was trying to introduce specialty desserts, including ice-cream mud pies. The products were excellent and the margins were good. But he couldn’t get restaurants to try them.
Recently, someone reminded me of one of those stories. I remembered why I loved it. “We all sell ice cream.” John Covell was a successful executive in the office-equipment business. One Friday afternoon, after selling a copier, he challenged himself to sell another before going home.
That one question changed everything.
There was a reason. Most Cape Cod restaurants closed during the winter, and many owners spent those months in Florida arranging their menus and suppliers for the coming season. By the time the ice-cream distributor approached them, their decisions had already been made.
A customer referred him to a local icecream distributor. Covell walked in and did what salespeople traditionally do. He asked about the man’s copier—what kind he had, how old it was, how much he used it and whether he was happy with it.
Covell listened. Then he offered an idea. He suggested that the distributor create sample dessert menus featuring each restaurant’s own logo. He could offer the restaurant a two-week trial, provide the ice cream and even supply the little menus to place on the tables.
Then he realized something. The man didn’t need a new copier. His old copier was doing exactly what he needed.
Suddenly, the distributor had something different to offer. Not ice cream. An opportunity. The man loved the idea. And then something unexpected happened. He turned to Covell and asked, “How soon can I get the copier?”
The copier hadn’t changed. The customer had. Covell had stopped trying to sell him something and started trying to understand him. That story has stayed with me for more than three decades because its lesson reaches far beyond sales. How often do we listen just long enough to respond—but not long enough to understand? How often are we so focused on what we want to say that we miss what someone is actually telling us? The greatest opportunities are sometimes hidden inside someone else’s problem. And sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer another person isn’t what we came prepared to sell. It’s an idea. A connection. A different way of looking at things. A little encouragement. Or simply the willingness to listen. That’s why I still believe the lesson from 1992 applies today: Don’t ask, “What can I sell you?” Ask, “What can I do to help you?” Because whether you’re selling copiers, ice cream, ideas—or simply trying to make a difference in someone’s life—we all have something to give. And sometimes, what’s old is new again.
