It’s Not Your House, It’s Your Legacy. It’s an exciting time in real estate. Homes are selling at a record pace with demand showing little sign of slowing around our area. It’s busy, it’s frenetic, and to use the word of the year, it’s unprecedented. When the market moves this quickly, it can present increased room for error on the part of buyers and sellers.

It is an extremely important time to work with members of our Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices team-where our buyer and seller clients can seek out our expert insights now more than ever. With the right real estate partner, the fast-paced market doesn’t have to be one fraught with stress.

hen Tiberah Berhanu of West Orange’s son, Biruk, a third grader, overheard her talking to his uncle about his upcoming citizenship application, he asked if he was an alien. This led Tiberah to turn the discussion into a self-published children’s book—“My Uncle is an Alien.” In the story, protagonist Eli Daniels, has a big secret that he is having trouble keeping, and his imagination takes over as the secret begins to unravel. The book is situated in West Orange and set at Kelly Elementary School with illustrations of well-known areas of town gracing the pages and cover. Two astronauts are depicted representing the school alumni Mark and Scott Kelly. Impressed by his mom’s prowess, Biruk is now thinking about writing his own book, and Tiberah, who emigrated to the USA from Ethiopia at 6, has another book in mind. “My Uncle is an Alien” is available at TiberahBerhanu.com.

The original four that started Beloved Bath– From left, back row: Pat Miller and Pam Kattouf; front row from left: John Miller and Justin Kattouf.

Moms Bring Meaningful Employment to People with Autism By Jackie Schatell

W

hen Pam Kattouf of Maplewood and Pat Miller of West Orange met on the playground with their two young sons, they never dreamed that 20 years later, they would be business partners of an online candle and bath business providing “meaningful employment for people with autism.” As moms, each with a son with autism on the profound end of the spectrum, the business is a dream come true. “We are proof that you can take a leap and follow your dreams,” says Pat. “After my son Justin’s diagnosis, and years later of having poor experiences in the job market, I knew that the only way he was going to find meaningful employment, was if I created it for him,” says Pam. Agreeing, Pat states, “There is a real lack of good employment opportunities for people with autism.” When the boys were young, the moms noticed that both of them enjoyed and were soothed using lavender salts in the bath. The boys also enjoyed helping them 16

make the bath salts. This sparked the idea for an online business called Beloved Bath, which has now been operating for 5 years. The Maplewood business, not only employs Pat’s son John and Pam’s son Justin, both 20, it employs other people with autism, and partners with local special needs schools to offer vocational training and employment. Employees ages 21 and older either come by themselves or with a job coach. There are all different levels of jobs available to meet everyone’s skill levels. Some employees do the labeling, or add stickers, and lids, while others put the items in boxes, create hand-painted lids for the company’s signature bath salts, or make the beautifully fragranced candles, salts, and body butters. The company also creates prettily packaged soap favors for parties and events. “In a perfect world, we would have many branches of the business open so we could employ as many people with autism as possible,” says Pam. “We hope this is the first of many locations.” October 2021

The women can tell their employees are happy because they “can see smiles on their faces” and know that “they love working here,” says Pam. Pat adds, “There are some verbal employees and one recently said that “this is the only job I have ever been paid for and I love coming to.” A percentage of the profits from every sale goes to autism education, specifically for vocational training. “When individuals with autism are taught the skills necessary to obtain jobs that they enjoy and excel at, the benefits are exponential,” the women say. “We fiercely believe that every person with autism can be a productive member of their community.” Beloved Bath, which uses clean, natural ingredients, has recently launched its fall product line, and is offering Suburban Essex Magazine readers a special 15% off discount when using the code SuburbanEssex. The items can be viewed on their website, www.BelovedBath.com.

Local Resident Helps Children Suffering from Pediatric Cancer By Jackie Schatell

W

hile working as a social worker at a hospital, Andrea Inauen was already helping families fighting pediatric cancer, when she was introduced to Fairfield-based Fighting Children’s Cancer Foundation (FCCF), by Foundation Board President, Greg Porcino. She realized that by joining the Foundation, she could make an impact in a different way. Now, 10 years later, as the executive director, she is still going strong with the Foundation, which has been in existence since 1998. According to the website, fccf.info, 500 children in NJ are diagnosed with cancer every year, which is higher than all but 5 states in the US. 75% of the families affected will have at least one parent reduce hours or stop working to care for their child. In addition, 15,700 will hear the words, “your child has cancer,” which is the leading cause of death by disease. “These families are amazing, and the kids are heroes facing adversity,” says Andrea. Non-profit, FCCF provides needs-based financial assistance to families struggling

with pediatric cancer. It assists families faced with financial challenges, reduced working hours and those that need to take family leave in order to take care of a sick child and care for the quality of life of the whole family. Donations to the Foundation directly pay family mortgages, utility bills, car payments, groceries, health insurance premiums, and in the saddest of cases, end-of-life and funeral support when a cure cannot be found.

Andrea Inauen

“Managing the increased expenses and loss of income, while also navigating the care of other children in the home cause further hardship,” says Andrea. “The goal is to be a refuge where those who need it can find assistance.” The Foundation also has a Holiday Giving Program that helps families enjoy the holidays despite their cancer battles. Funds to each family offset unmet year-end expenses, help families buy gifts

for their children, and allow families to enjoy a holiday celebration together, away from the rigors of their child’s cancer treatment. “We want families to focus on what is most important – their children and family,” says Andrea. There are many ways to help including donating monies or products, holding, and attending events, and more. You can learn more on the website, fccf.info.

Chinese Cuisine: Healthy and Delicious

T

S Ma is not like the Chinese restaurant you find in almost every downtown. Thomas Ma, the owner, whose father was a chef, grew up not only working in restaurants, but having excellent food at home. The very different spin on both traditional Chinese dishes and their own creations you find here revolves around two words: healthy and delicious. At TS Ma, the dishes are created using only very fresh and high quality ingredients; for instance, you’ll never see canned water chestnuts or baby corn. Only white meat chicken tenders or flank steak are used when the recipe calls for either chicken or beef. The highest quality rice vinegar is used and you’ll never find a gloppy sauce thickened with cornstarch. Healthy canola oil is used instead of soybean oil, and in a very interesting twist, you find that in recipes that call for sugar, maple syrup is used. Thomas points out that TS Ma offers many Gluten Free options, and is very happy to accommodate special diet requirements. Here, we’re featuring one of our favorites: the Pork Ribs Shanghai Style which are like no other Chinese ribs you’ve ever had. They’re braised in a special pot that cooks the ribs evenly, with a sauce that is marinated right into the ribs. The Shanghai style sauce is a nottoo-sweet accompaniment to these tender ribs that are served on a bed of Chinese greens. TS Ma is a regular winner of the Suburban Essex Readers poll (as well as many other awards across the state). You can see for yourself why when your place an order at the Upper Montclair location which is takeout or delivery only. For a gracious dine-in experience, visit their Wyckoff restaurant, a short hop from the Essex area; be sure to make a reservation, we’re not the only ones who know how good the food is!

Fall in Love with FOILAYAGE By Deborah Schapiro photo by Dan Epstein

A

s a Master Stylist at Shag86 salon in Little Falls, Sam Casillo has expertise in a wide range of hair coloring and cutting techniques. In particular, she has become known for foilayage, which is balayage (a highlighting technique in which dye is painted on hair in a way that creates a gradual, natural-looking effect) using tinfoil. Casillo explains, “I do this so that I can create a lighter and brighter blonde. Balayage is free-hand painting, which gives hair a more subtle, sun-kissed look. Foilayage adds heat, which gives hair stronger dimensional differences. It’s also cleaner than balayage, which can get pretty messy.” She adds that many of her clients are now asking for just such a contrasting effect: “People are generally asking for an ashy, vanilla-toned blonde these days.” Just as there are trends in hair color, so are there in cut. Casillo notes that “A lot of people are asking for curtain bangs, which are bangs parted in the middle and swept to the sides, like an open curtain.” These bangs go particularly well with a bob, Casillo’s personal favorite cut. She explains, “A bob is timeless, so it’s always on-trend. I do a textured bob, which gives different options. You can blow-dry it for a sharp, sleek look, or you can get get a beachy wave by using a curling iron but leaving the ends straight.” She adds that this beachy look, less prim and proper than the traditional bob, is very much on-trend now. An in-demand stylist, Casillo credits the salon staff for her success. She says, “Shag86 has a very strong sense of family. The people here have become my close friends who have molded me into the person and stylist I am today.”

The Essex County Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice Building in Newark that opened in June.

A DISCUSSION WITH

Sanjeev Varghese, P.E., P., Director & County Engineer

By Jackie Schatell

How did you get into this field? My father was an Engineer, and I was interested in his work, visited his construction sites during studies. I thought becoming an engineer was the best career path to fulfill that. As an engineer, my staff and I face challenges every day, whether we are building a new project or renovating an existing building. It’s very rewarding to know that what we do has an impact on our residents and their quality of life.

What does your dept. do? My department is responsible for maintaining county roads, county buildings and properties, and overseeing construction projects. In addition, our Division of Environmental Services works throughout the year to control the mosquito population.

What is your busiest season and why? We are busy all year round, so one time of the year is just as busy as the next. Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo has made modernizing our infrastructure a priority, so we are always paving roads, updating intersections and replacing bridges. In addition, each season brings its own challenges and there are always storms or emergencies to which to respond.

This photo was taken at the spring 2021 Essex Count Paper Shredding Day. Sanjeev is third from left. He and Joe DiVincenzo are with two DPW employees who worked that day. 28

A CLEAN Grill is a HEALTHY Grill! What do you do per season? In winter, we are plowing snow and salting the roads, and in the fall, we are picking up leaves. The last few summers have brought a lot more severe weather, so our summers are spent cleaning debris from waterways and catch basins and spraying to keep the mosquito population at a minimum. The spring is when we receive the most complaints about potholes. Throughout the year, we are following our County Executive’s lead, to build new buildings, maintain our county facilities and keep our fleet in working order.

What would we be surprised to know about your deptment? Some people would be surprised to learn we have a biologist on staff, who works with our mosquito control team to identify mosquitoes and the diseases they carry. We also are an all-terrain department; our work takes us out into the water, on land and in the sky. In addition, while the amount of salt we use each year varies according to the weather, we have three salt domes filled with 10 tons of salt.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner: Mediteranean Style!

M

eny Vaknin, the owner and executive chef of Mishmish Cafe, has created in Marcel Bakery and Kitchen a charming and cozy cafe where you can take out or enjoy the easy, comfortable dine-in ambiance at one of the tables.

What you find is a Global-infused Mediterranean eatery and bakery offering fresh casual food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A graduate of the French Culinary Institute, Vaknin evokes the rich culinary legacy of Morocco which he learned from his mother and grandmothers. He’s a winner of the Food Network’s Chopped series and can be found in many videos online. When we were recently there, it seemed as if there was a steady stream of folks coming in to pick up their take out. We opted for one of our favorites, featured here, which is also a favorite from Mishmish: The Jerusalem, grilled marinated flank steak with cucumber salsa, pickled cabbage, tahini and served with humus and a pita bread. Not shown but also noteworthy is the Schnitzel Sandwich, a chicken schnitzel in a pita bread, with charred red pepper, gouda cheese, and dijonnaise sauce. At breakfast, we’re partial to the Israeli Breakfast: two fried eggs, grilled halloumi cheese, sour pickles, Israeli salad and tomatoes. Stop in, take out something to bring home or back to the office, or plan to stay and enjoy the local ambiance. You’ll be glad you did.

Celebrate Reading & Help Your Child Develop a Love for It! By Kimberly Blaker

T

here are many ways parents can promote a love of reading and encourage their kids to read not only during the school year but year-round.

Read to Your Children Begin reading to your child very early. The National Education Association (NEA) suggests infancy is an excellent time to start. As your child grows, encourage their participation in reading the story with or to you. Although your child may not be ready to read, they often memorize some of their favorite books or pages. Making your child an active participant will help develop their love for reading.

Visit the Local Library Think of the library as a big free educational toy store. Help your child choose some books, but also encourage him or her to select some on their own. Your child can also take home audiobooks, video games, videos, and music CDs.

Help Your Child Build a Collection One thing common among reading lovers is how much they enjoy having their own book collection. Help your child grow a personal library of their favorite series, author, or genre. Then give your child a special shelf to store and display the collection.

Play Word Games Look for board, computer, or phone games that help kids develop their reading and spelling skills and vocabulary.

Subscribe Your Child to a Magazine There's a host of kids' magazines on the market and something for every age group. It will give your child something to look forward to each month and build enthusiasm for reading.

Read In Front of Your Kids Show kids that reading isn't just a school requirement, but rather a lifelong activity. Let them see you reading both to learn and for pleasure.

Form a Kids’ Book Club If your child is interested in it, this is a great way to build excitement for reading. You'll want to find kids who are all at about the same reading level. You'll need to decide where to hold the weekly or monthly meetings, which could be at your house, or perhaps your school or public library will provide you space. Set up a reading room. Find a quiet area in your home to designate as the reading area. It should have comfy seating, perhaps even a bean bag or two, pillows, blankets, and good lighting.

Making Advances Against Breast Cancer

M. Michele Blackwood, MD

Encouraging News About Breast Cancer By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

T

he statistics are alarming. About one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer. And 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of the disease. Advances in diagnosis and treatment have improved the survival rate for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. M. Michele Blackwood, MD, FACS, Chief of Breast Surgery, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Medical Director, Northern Regional Director of Breast Services for RWJBarnabas Health in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, explains why the news is encouraging.

What has changed in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer? I refer to it as a generational change that began in the 1990s. Many women who were diagnosed with breast cancer then are still alive. Advanced imaging techniques, coupled with treatments that are tailored to each patient, were developed.

How are MRIs used? We use MRIs for patients who have breast cancer or who are at high risk. We have an MRI dedicated exclusively for this use. We have been able to shorten the time it takes to perform the MRI to eight to ten minutes. It’s conveniently located adjacent to where we perform mammograms.

How do you know if you are at high risk? Family history puts a patient at a higher risk as does dense breast tissue. Some people don’t realize they’re at risk. There are several online tools to assess risk. Plug in your information and a calculation is done to assess it. The Gail Model is a risk prediction tool, and the IBIS Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation Tool is another. Women may want to discuss doing an assessment with their primary care physician.

Should men be concerned about breast cancer? About 2,000 men a year are diagnosed with breast cancer. If two female relatives have breast cancer, or there is a history of men in the family with it, there is a greater likelihood of developing it.

How has treatment improved? It is important to not over or under treat cancer. Treatment doesn’t automatically mean chemotherapy. With genomic sequencing we can drill down to different parts of the cancer. What makes it grow? How do we stop it from growing? It’s no longer a guessing game. We can treat cancer more like a chronic disease and extend life expectancy. There’s a deescalating approach to treatment, treating breast cancer with less invasive means and with more precision.

What is your recommendation for mammograms? I advise an annual one every year after age 40.

To schedule a mammogram at The Breast Center at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center visit rwjbh.org/mammo. 40

A Breast Cancer Survivor Shares Her Advice for Staying Positive During Treatment

B

edzaida Concorso, 55, of Belleville, has been through a lot. A breast cancer diagnosis. Chemotherapy. Surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic, when no one in her family was allowed to visit her in the hospital. More chemotherapy and radiation therapy that led to her skin blistering and peeling. Throughout, she has fought to stay upbeat. “I love to dress cute. My doctor told me she loved how I came into the office so positive, with lipstick and earrings,” Bedzaida says. “A lot of people see a cancer diagnosis as a death sentence, but it really doesn’t have to be. You have to have the mindset of, ‘I’m gonna get up and fight every day.’ “I know that’s not easy, and no one with cancer can be positive all the time. But I hope what I’ve learned through my experience can help somebody else.”

Treatment Choices Bedzaida first felt a lump in her left breast while on vacation in Puerto Rico Bedzaida Concorso in May of 2019. Because she was in the middle of a transition with her health insurance, she didn’t have a biopsy until August of “If the tumor responds, simpler surgery that year. Moving Ahead “It’s been an experience and it’s been minddraining,” Bedzaida says, “but I had to shift my thought process because thinking negative wasn’t going to help me heal.”

As soon as she could, she went back to her job as a freight forwarder dealing with U.S. Customs. Because everyone else in her office was working at home, she could easily practice social distancing. “I’m not going to lie, it was hard, and I was so tired at night. But I love getting up in the morning, getting dressed, putting on lipstick and going to work,” she says. “This way, my home remains my sanctuary.” Having breast cancer, Bedzaida says, has changed her thinking. “You don’t realize how precious life is until you think you might lose it,” she says. “Was it traumatic? Yes. Would I wish this experience on anybody? No. But it has opened my eyes. I’m going to embrace every single moment.” Bedzaida acknowledges that she’s gone through times of anger, fear and self pity. “That’s normal,” she says. “But I’ve always been a little tough, hardheaded.” Her family, she says, has been her support group. “You need somebody you can call and cry to and say ‘I’m scared,’” Bedzaida says. “My sister has been my anchor and so have my mother and kids.” She hopes that other cancer patients who hear her story are encouraged. “Keep your soul healthy as well as your body,” Bedzaida says. “And music—you’ve gotta have music!” For Bedzaida, that means staying tuned to her Spanish-language Christian music radio station. “I’m determined to appreciate every single day I have on this earth, whether I’m sick or not,” Bedzaida says. “I’m never going to be the same—and I don’t want to be.”

A New Breast Center The Center for Breast Health and Disease Management at Clara Maass Medical Center is now open at 36 Newark Ave., Suite 132, in Belleville. “We are located next door to a radiology treatment center and are providing coordinated care for our patients with the help of an oncology nurse navigator,” says Maria Kowzun, MD, surgical oncologist. We have created a multidisciplinary team and comprehensive program including a support group at Clara Maass Medical Center for our breast cancer patients.” RWJBarnabas Health and Clara Maass Medical Center, in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey—the state’s only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center—provide close-to-home access to the latest treatment options. Tips from the HomePros Messy Closet? No Problem! Is your closet a mess? You’re not alone. These tips can help: • Toss items you haven’t used in two years. • Maximize hanging space by installing double rods— one upper, one lower. • Add a 12-inch shelf above the rods to create an additional storage spot. • Use flat shoe shelves; they can accommodate more shoes than cubbies.

Old Decks Can Look New Again Deck resurfacing can be an excellent way to spruce up an existing deck for a reasonable investment. Resurfacing can be a great fall/winter project because it can be finished in a short period of time. Deck resurfacing is the process of replacing the deck boards, railings and/or stairs on existing deck frame and foundation. There are a number of reasons someone might wish to resurface a deck. • The deck isn’t that old but has not been well maintained so the surface boards are weather worn. • The deck surface is fine but the railings or stairs are in disrepair or unsafe. • You purchase an existing home but do not like the finish or materials used for the deck surface. Be sure to have your deck fully inspected by a trusted professional to ensure deck resurfacing in the proper way to go.

5 Things to Consider When Setting Up a Home Office

Things To Do When Contemplating a Home Remodel • Make a short list of the professional(s) you think you might need.

What are your functional needs? What kind of tasks do you need to perform as part of your day? Consider your needs for privacy, quiet or computer time.

• Interview them briefly via phone, then follow up with a video or in-person meeting.

What are your equipment and storage needs? It all needs to fit in your new home office so you can work freely.

• Ask for at least three references from those you think might be a fit. Ask references open- ended questions such as, “What problems came up during your project, and how did this person resolve them?”

Consider your lighting. Lighting plays a big role. Layer your light so that your task spaces are well lit.

• Prior to making your final selection, discuss what will be included in the scope of work, the timeline and cost structure. Once in a contract, there should be no surprises.

Does the office need to serve other functions? Will this space also be used as a guest room or as a gym, kid’s study or crafting space?

• Ask when items need to be ordered, to ensure they will arrive in time to be installed.

How do I make this office feel good? It is important that you love the space. What is a color or pattern that brings you joy? Do you need the room to inspire creativity or calm you? Do you need back or leg support?

• Create a list of outstanding items, known as a “punch list,” near the end of the project and share it with all relevant team members.

These are exactly the questions we would ask when we start to design a home office. If you’re not getting the answers you want, we can help.

Prolong the Life of Patio Furniture A furniture cover is designed to protect outdoor furniture from damage caused by rain, snow, hail, and even sunshine. Outdoor furniture comes in a wide range of materials, and some materials can be more easily damaged than others. Covering your patio furniture is extremely important for prolonging its life. Look for covers that are breathable and waterproof, as they will provide the most protection. The best furniture covers not only protect from humidity, rain and snow, they also protect your furniture from damaging debris from high winds, as well as block out the sun’s UV rays, which are known to fade some types of materials. Before covering your furniture for the season, it is a good idea to clean it first. In doing so, any dirt, residue, and water that could otherwise stain the furniture while it is covered will be removed.

It is a Good Idea to Strip Paint Before Repainting Many people choose to paint strip if the old coat was lead-based paint. It was only in more recent years that researchers understood how dangerous lead paint can be to your health. Paint stripping removes any traces of these types of lead-based paints for a better, safer finish. Another reason for paint stripping is to correct a poor past paint job. If the paint was applied unevenly, if it faded over time or if there is a great deal of wear and tear, clearing that old paint off first will make the new coat go on much better and give a more uniform, polished and finished look. Chemical stripping, is a technique used to remove layers of paint found on old wood. This technique can restore your wood to its original state or transform it to a gorgeous stained finish, as well as create a smooth surface for paint.

Secrets to a Beautiful Landscape Your property is essential to your home’s appeal. For a healthy, beautiful landscape: • Keep in mind that trees provide a long-term framework for your property, giving your home structure, shade, screening and style all year long. • Take care in selecting and placing your trees; you may want to consult experts. • We recommend signing up for a lawn treatment program. Aerating and seeding in the fall is always recommended as well.

Protect Your Pool Through the Winter Months By properly winterizing your swimming pool, you can help protect your pool from temperatureand weather-related damage while it’s not in use. Winterizing can also help keep your pool free of contaminants, dirt, and debris. It is a good idea to balance your water before you shut your pool down for the season. By ensuring that your pool water chemistry is where it needs to be, you can avoid labor-intensive maintenance headaches in the spring. In addition, shocking your pool before you shut it down for the season with a high dose of chlorine, (Pool Shock) will help prevent the growth of algae and other harmful bacteria. If some of your pool equipment (such as ladders or handrails) has developed a bit of rust after a season in the water, now is a good time to address the issue. To do so, make a paste made of equal parts baking soda and water. Cover the equipment with the baking soda mixture, paying special attention to rusty spots. Brush gently with a nylon brush, then rinse with clean water. Dry with a clean, soft cloth. For extra protection, consider waxing and buffing your equipment. It can help prevent rust from forming again next year.

Prediction About Future Design That Will Surprise You CWI.DESIGN president and principal designer Rachel Kapner has an uncanny knack for making predictions about the future of design. She even has a crystal ball. “It’s sort of a joke around my office,” she says, “so I did get one for my birthday.” So, when she gazes into it, what does Rachel see about the future of design? New Designs Will Deserve Fresh Fabrics This prediction has already come to pass in Rachel’s world, but it’s one you may see more designers embrace. “I don’t like to repeat fabrics,” Rachel explains. “If I use a fabric, I will not use it again, and that is definitely one of my sticking points.” This impulse has occasionally stymied suppliers. “I’ve had sales reps who’ve come in, who have asked me, ‘Show me the fabric you use every day.’ And I say, ‘There isn’t one.’ And they look at me like I’m crazy.” But to Rachel, it’s smart. “Many of my clients know each other. I want each of their projects to reflect uniqueness, so that you could say: ‘Yes, I can see that Rachel did this—but not necessarily see the exact same thing.” What unique fabric would Rachel love to use in an upcoming project? Ideally, she’d channel the influence of design icon Mario Buatta, the Prince of Chintz. “Instead of his true floral bouquet chintz: a different, more abstract version of it—but on the same ground cloth,” she explains. “You don’t see a lot of the same ground cloth that you did 30 years ago. People are starting to ask for it, and it’s just not out there.” While she searches for fabric with his spirit, Rachel will hold tight to her memories of Mario. “I met him about a year or two before he passed away,” Rachel recalls. She’d seen him at talks and books signings, but their most memorable encounter was at a showhouse where Rachel was working. “He was sitting at a table. I went up and just sat and talked to him,” she remembers. “I was so excited that this was my idol, and I was able to meet him.”

What Type of Stone is Best for a Fireplace Surround? Stone fireplace surrounds are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures that can match any design style. From its heat tolerance, to it’s hard, scratch resistant surface, natural stone can handle the rigors of day-to-day use. • Slate is resistant to heat, but only appropriate for gas and electric fireplaces—the heat from wood fires can be too intense. • Marble is chosen by many for its timeless beauty, and it is heat tolerance and can be used with wood burning, gas or electric fireplaces. • Granite is suitable for gas or wood burning fireplaces. The stone does require regular sealing, but it is relatively low maintenance and easy to care for. • Limestone is very durable and has good heat tolerance. However, this stone should only be used with electric or gas fireplaces.

Don’t Let Weeds Spoil Concrete Pavers Here’s a quick and easy way to avoid annoying weeds that sprout in the cracks between concrete pavers: replace the sand between pavers with polymer sand. When washed down with water, polymer sand dries into a non-porous yet flexible joint—locking in the pavers and preventing weeds from growing. To keep pavers looking their best, clean up spills promptly, and use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove stains.

Avoid Outlet Overload The electrical system of many older homes is not properly equipped to respond to today’s increased power demands. Here are some tips: • Never plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once or “piggyback” extra appliances on extension cords or wall outlets. • Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into their own wall outlet since they are heavy power users. • If you find you are overloading an outlet or circuit in your home, please contact a professional to help resolve the problem. Watch for these warning signs of electrical system overload: • Lights often flicker, blink or dim momentarily • Circuit breakers trip or fuses blow often • Cords or wall plates are warm to the touch or discolored • Crackling, sizzling or buzzing is heard from outlets

Countertop Care Over the past 20 years the options for countertops have grown exponentially. Not long ago granite was the countertop material of choice but more clients are gravitating toward manmade quartz for its ease and durability, as well as quartzite for its natural beauty. While many clients are choosing quartz because there is less maintenance, if you do choose a natural stone the first thing is to make sure is that it has been properly sealed, and should be resealed every few years. Quartz products do not need to be sealed but they do require similar care to stone countertops since they are made up of over 90% natural stone. While different materials can tolerate different cleaners the best rule of thumb is to clean natural stone and quartz with warm, mild soapy water. Harsh chemicals like ammonia and bleach products can strip the sealer and dull the countertop surface and overall are not recommended for regular use. As an added protection we suggest using “The Original Bee’s Wax Polish” to protect stone and quartz countertops from spills and keep them shining. Care and maintenance is in the forefront of a clients mind when selecting products for their kitchen renovation. We all spend enough time cooking in the kitchen, we don’t need to spend even more time cleaning and maintaining it too!

Tips from the Home Pros Deep Clean Your BBQ Grill Annually When you leave residue from your last meal on the grates, it will char and burn the next time you light your grill—and those burned bits are actually bad for your health and a dirty grill can also be a major fire hazard. To keep your grill safe: Clean Your Grease Tray Weekly: Remove the tray when it’s cold. Scrape it clean, soak in warm water with detergent, rinse and dry thoroughly. Clean Grates While Still Warm: Scrub your grates and cooking surfaces clean, preferably while the grill is still warm— but not hot. Scrape Grates During Pre-Heating: The heat will make it just as easy to clean as it would have been right after cooking. Give Your Grill an Annual Overhaul: Once a year, make sure to give your grill a deep clean with a reputable grill cleaning company. Their services should include: degreasing all surfaces, grill inspection, grill cleaning, outdoor kitchen cleaning, and polishing of granite countertops.

Shelter Your Trees for the Winter Protect a small tree or shrub from extreme cold and the uneven temperatures of freezing and thawing by surrounding it with a cylinder of snow fencing or chicken wire. Fill the space between the tree and the fencing with straw or leaves for insulation. To shield a dwarf or young evergreen from winter damage, drive stakes into the ground at four corners around the plant. Wrap burlap or heavy black plastic around the stakes and secure it at the top, bottom, and center with stout twine.

Is Your Clothes Dryer a Fire Hazard? The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that approximately 14,000 clothes dryer-related fires occur each year. Under certain conditions, when lint blocks the flow of air, excessive heat buildup may cause a fire in some dryers. To prevent clothes dryer-caused fires, follow these often-overlooked safety precautions: • Clean the lint filter regularly and make sure the dryer is operating properly. Clean the filter after each load of clothes. While the dryer is operating, check the outside exhaust to make sure exhaust air is escaping normally. If there are signs that the dryer is hotter than normal, it may be a sign that the dryer’s temperature control thermostat needs servicing. • Check the exhaust duct more often if you have a plastic, flexible duct. This type of duct is more likely to trap lint than smooth metal ducting. • Closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions for new installations. Most manufacturers that get their clothes dryers approved by Underwriters Laboratories specify the use of metal exhaust ducts. If you are having the dryer installed, insist upon metal ducts unless the installer has verified that the manufacturer permits the use of plastic ducts.

Choose a Pavilion Design that Fits Your Landscape, Lifestyle, and Personality Start enjoying more romantic evenings in your backyard while holding your partner tight in front of your covered outdoor fireplace. Feel confident celebrating with all the people you care about during the holidays while you sip on a drink from your outdoor built-in bar. Whether you like to unwind poolside or entertain family and friends, a pavilion is a great addition to any landscape design. A pavilion will define your outdoor space while providing shelter and adding personality to your property. It can be the focal point of your design or the perfect complement to a pool or garden.

Covered structures elevate your property with their versatility. They help extend the fun from inside to the great outdoors by increasing your useable space. A pavilion provides an outdoor spot to entertain and relax any time of year. Having a covered area in your backyard, particularly one with a fire element, removes the variables of rain or shine, sleet, or snow.

Steps to Stairwell Upgrades Stairways are focal points and the spine of your home. New stairwells make a dramatic statement. One way to upgrade your stairwell is to add traditional wainscoting. It will accent the bones of the staircase. Then paint it with premium paint using sprayers for a professional factory-looking finish. Railings and banisters add personality. You can add new railings or refinish existing ones. The time and attention paid to this step really pays off. You also have the option of refinishing stair risers to coordinate or contrast. Some projects add tile, wallpaper or even faux finishes to increase impact. Stair treads take a lot of abuse. To finish up your project refinish the floors and treads, always with premium staining material and polyurethane. And don’t forget to apply wood conditioner before staining. The easiest way to refinish your stairwell is to call a contractor that specializes in renovations and restorations.

ew Jersey’s only Smithsonian Affiliate, The Morris Museum, unveiled Spark!Lab, a cutting-edge facility, on September 24. This Smithsonian-created learning space will inspire young visitors to create, collaborate, and innovate, and is one of ten such facilities in the nation. Spark!Lab is made possible by leadership support from Florham Park based BASF, with additional support provided by Gay H. Osborn on behalf of the Blanche and George Jones Fund, Inc. Spark!Lab offers any child (ages 5-12 and accompanied by an adult), a new informal approach to hands-on learning. Instead of following step-by-step instructions, young inventors will be empowered to problemsolve and overcome real-world obstacles. Spark!Lab offers many unique, project-specific stations, where inventors can engage directly with engineering and design challenges. “Spark!Lab is a dynamic, inquiry-based educational space where our children will develop the confidence and 21st-century skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond,” stated Dr. Cleveland Johnson, Morris Museum’s President and CEO. “Bringing such amazing Smithsonian resources to our community is part of our growing commitment to STEAM (science, technology, engineering arts and maths) education in New Jersey.” “Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at BASF. For more than a decade our STEM education programs have inspired the future scientists, engineers, and innovators that will be essential to our continued success as the world’s leading chemical company,” said Molly

We supplement Medicare with additional coverage.” Pranpat explains, “We have no particular affiliation with any one insurance company that we work with, so we are able to match someone with the program and company best for him or her.” That means considering a client’s age, financial situation and other factors before recommending a specific carrier and policy.

racticing law was always on Tanya Freeman’s bucket list, and ten years ago, she was able to check off that goal. With her background in banking and insurance, and having six children herself, she felt that family law was the right fit for her. “For family law, you’re really doing two things,” says Freeman, a partner and the chair of the Family Law department with Weiner Law Group. “You’re helping navigate issues concerning clients’ children and you’re resolving their financial issues.” In addition to her background, one of her other strong suits, she believes, is her ability to help clients see that there is more than one path towards the dissolution of a relationship. “This is your journey and I’m going to help you navigate it,” says Freeman. “Every family is different, and you need to understand what your options are and what choosing those options mean. “I’m helping you make very informed decisions and not just telling you here is what the law says and this is what you have to do.” Being a part of Weiner Law Group allows Freeman’s clients to have that personal feel they desire, while at the same time allowing them access to a knowledgeable network of attorneys with a variety of backgrounds. When she needs advice on an issue outside of family law, she can call on her fellow partners to assist her client. Freeman was named Family Lawyer of the Year by the Essex County Bar Association in 2021. “The most heart-warming accolades and recognition are those that I receive from my peers and colleagues,” says Freeman.

Aiding a JUST RESOLUTION PATRICK DEFRANCISCI INVESTIGATES CIVIL AND CRIMINAL CASES By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

I

n Patrick DeFrancisci’s 40-year career, 30 as a cop and 10 as a corporate investigator, he spent a lot of time in courtrooms. During that time, he learned that “exposure equals experience.” Now, as owner and president of The Gideon Group, LLC, based in Cedar Grove, he puts that experience to use for clients in both criminal and civil cases. In criminal cases, “there can be many missteps,” he states. “Was it conducted fairly?” In the case of one client, charged with aggravated assault, his investigative work helped determine that the wrong individual had been charged. DeFrancisci also assists in insurance investigations, such as “slip-and-falls,” and motor vehicle accidents, helping clients achieve just outcomes.

Patrick DeFrancisci “I am candid with people inquiring about their situations, and I do not give legal advice,” he emphasizes. But he encouraged those with potential cases to be proactive in getting an investigator involved as soon as possible. Witnesses move, memories fade, and he prefers to speak with those involved face-to-face. “Prompt response can be key to the client’s successful resolution,” says DeFrancisci.

Art of Essex

Art:

Based On Objects By Dan Epstein

I

n 1964, the renown modern artist Jasper Johns wrote himself a note: Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” That’s the inspiration for “Based On An Object”, the first time the Montclair Art Museum and Studio Montclair, Inc. have joined together to mount one exhibit. The work is being displayed at both locations in Montclair. It’s not just a landmark exhibit, but a very interesting one as well. It was co-curated by Virginia S. Block, a former president of Studio Montclair as well as a longtime gallery director, and Ira Wagner the newly installed Executive Director of the Montclair Art Museum. According to Ms. Block: “It was very exciting to see what artist selected for their objects and how they chose to use and/or alter them. Some of the works use national icons (i.e. RBG collars and baseball) or address societal issues such as violence…” Mr. Wagner added “As a juror, I was inspired to see a broad range of strong submissions; these show that Jasper Johns’ instruction to do something to an object continues to be an inspiration

to artists as they transform objects that are at the same time everyday items while also unusual subjects for a work of art.” What we loved about the exhibit is that the work is easily accessible: you don’t need to be a college art history major to get it. Some of the pieces are politically poignant, some are so clever they fascinate, and some are humorous. In “ioczko lancucha” a painting by Agnieszka Wszolkowska, we see her being affected by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, whose trademark collar was similar to one the artist wore to school as a child. Referencing her heritage as a Polish immigrant, Wszolkowska includes the directions how to make a similar collar in the background of the painting…in Polish. Look at “Cicada/Roller Skate” finds Jennifer Place showing us both her interest in things that move, and flea market finds when she transforms a cast off roller skate into an insect. Bart Gorin reminds us in “Coffee” of a simple everyday moment for a lot of people as they start their day with the first cup of coffee. We see the out-of-frame cup reflected in the pot and are reminded that sometimes you don’t see your obvious objective, until you see it. The exhibit is open until October 15. Treat yourself to a pleasant outing. The work is divided in two locations. Start at either one and finish at the other. There is no cost for either exhibit, however you must wear a mask, and show proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test at both locations, and at the Studio Montclair Gallery visit by an easily scheduled appointment. Both

are on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. You can stop for a bite in between, unless Mr. Gorin’s work has given you a hankering for a cup of coffee.

Include Skin Protection in Your Wellness Routine 365 Days a Year

V

isible light (VL) is the light we can see, and excessive amounts of exposure can contribute to the production of free radicals, which may have negative, aging effects on the skin. VL comes in many forms, from sunlight to the light emitted from digital screens like cellphones and laptops. That’s why experts advise taking steps to protect your skin year round. During cooler months often spent inside, many people let their guard down when it comes to skin protection. Be sure your wellness routine includes steps to keep skin protected and healthy-looking from the inside out.

Experience Change

Wear SPF: Apply a topical SPF sunscreen every day and remember, incidental sun exposure through windows, open and closed, also counts, so think beyond outdoor skin exposure. Protect Your Lips & Eyes: A lip balm containing SPF will work double duty, protecting your lips from chapping in the face of winds and cooler temperatures, while also offering protection from UV rays. Be sure to also protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses. Limit Screen Time: There are numerous wellness benefits associated with limiting screen time each day, and now, you can add protecting your skin to the list. Double down: Collaborative research published by the “Journal of Drugs in Dermatology” in 2019 by doctors at Wayne State University and Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, as well as Srinagarind Hospital in Thailand, suggests that when Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) is used as an antioxidant, it provides a secondary line of defense to protect against the effects of VL. Heliocare Daily Use Antioxidant Formula is a natural dietary supplement that has antioxidant properties due to Fernblock PLE Technology, an antioxidant naturally derived from the extract PLE. “ I WAS TIRED OF LIVING WITH MY FIBROMYALGIA PAIN” Fibromyalgia has been difficult to treat and even more difficult to understand, UNTIL NOW! Aleksandra Mihajlovic L.Ac., provides patients with much needed relief from Fibro symptoms!

I

f you have Fibromyalgia, you understand this sentiment all too well. Local resident Elizabeth N. found herself at a turning point when she noticed her diagnosis had started to take a toll on her marriage. “I was angry all the time because of all the things I couldn’t do anymore because of my Fibromyalgia. That anger cycled through to depression and affected everyone around me, my husband, more than anyone. It made our lives miserable.” Fibromyalgia affects the entire body. To make things complicated, it affects everyone’s body a little differently. To complicate things further, the effects of Fibromyalgia can change daily. Sometimes you’re plagued with widespread muscle pain and fatigue, and other days it’s a headache and heightened sensitivity to touch. “I could barely stand to have even the weight of bedsheets touching me, much less a hug from my husband,” explains Elizabeth.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by widespread pain in muscles and tissues rather than inflammation of the joints, muscles, and tissues. Then your primary care doctors suggest dietary changes, pain liniments and, prescription medications to the point where Fibromyalgia no longer rules your life. Instead, it’s ruled by a problematic routine and pill regimen that is supposed to help to avoid flare-ups. Elizabeth put it this way, “My life was no longer my own.” Eventually, Elizabeth did her own research and discovered that acupuncture can improve the quality of life in Fibro patients. Determined to find the best in the business, she discovered Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine led by Aleksandra Mihajlovic L.Ac. Aleksandra Mihajlovic L.Ac. has been successfully treating difficult to manage chronic pain cases for over a decade.

These are some examples of what it’s like to suffer from Fibromyalgia. Symptoms make everyday life incredibly difficult. Mundane, daily tasks are nearly impossible.

She uses the time-tested science of acupuncture and integrates it with modern medical advancements that encourage healing and recovery. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that is commonly used to reduce various forms of pain.

And too often, these symptoms are only made worse because practitioners find it challenging to understand and even more troublesome to treat. For example,

Acupuncture works by reducing inflammation, stimulating the release of endorphins and offers much needed, effective symptom relief for Fibromyalgia.

October 2021

Then Aleksandra Mihajlovic L.Ac. skillfully layers other non invasive therapies like ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ and O3 Regenerative Therapy™ for amplified, long-lasting results. “I feel like a new person. My husband comes with me to my appointments. He spends most of it thanking Aleksandra for giving him back the woman he married. And for the first time since we moved here, one of my neighbors told me I looked great! It’s a miracle she was able to reduce my Fibro symptoms, I don’t know how else to explain it.” If you’re looking for a therapist and a practice who not only understands your diagnosis but also has a proven solution for chronic pain, look no further than Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. Elizabeth describes Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine almost as enthusiastically as she does their treatments. “I love it here!” Additional information about Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine and their various treatments can be found by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. Aleksandra Mihajlovic L.Ac. Is now accepting new patients, in her Montclair, NJ office. Please call 973-444-8932 to take advantage of their new patient offer.

Indoor Veggie Gardening for Fun, Health & Sustainable Living By Kimberly Blaker

T

he move toward more sustainable living has gained traction in recent years with people looking to help the environment and their wallets. Gardening is a great hobby to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It's fun, saves money on groceries, and helps you feel accomplished by eating something you grew. It also promotes healthy living, cooking at home, and eating more nutritious foods. When you grow your own food at home, you also know exactly what's in it and how it was produced.

Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. Exposure to nature and the accomplishment you feel from successfully starting a garden is also good for your mental health.

What Types of Vegetables and Herbs Can Be Grown Indoors? Herbs, leafy plants, and microgreens are the most common edible plants for indoor growing. They generally do well with shallow soil because they're smaller and don't need as much space inside. They also don't need as much sun and are easier to grow if you're just starting out. Examples of edible vegetables and herbs that can be grown indoors include: Vegetables: Leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, arugula), Carrots, Scallions, Potatoes, Mushrooms, and Microgreens (vegetables like beets, radishes, and peas harvested as seedlings or sprouts) Herbs: Mint varieties, Cilantro, Parsley, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, Lavender, and Oregano

Before You Begin On a basic level, plants need at least water, nutrients, and light - and of course, you'll need the plant seeds or seedlings. Also, think about what your space is like and what will grow best in that environment. Alternatively, if you have more flexibility, you can think about which plants you want to grow and how to adapt your environment to meet their needs. To give your plants the best chance of thriving, you'll want a specific place you can control. Also, be aware of your home's humidity, especially during dry winter months, since plants need a more moist environment. Plants do best in stable, consistent temperatures in the 60s to 70s with good air circulation to prevent mold or fungus growth. If you're planning to use mostly natural light from your windows, consider the amount of light they permit and at what time of day they allow for more or less light. Generally, a south-facing window will give you the most sunlight. This will likely change throughout the seasons. So be aware of how light exposure varies and affects plants.

Supplies Containers should be big enough for your plants' needs. Consider how big the plants will grow, the depth needed for roots, and how far seeds must be planted from each other. When growing plants indoors, you need to consider drainage, so excess water doesn't build up and cause problems like root rot or bacterial growth. The soil you use for growing indoors is different from ordinary garden soil. Use potting mix or soil made explicitly for seedlings and the indoors. These soil varieties are made to drain better than garden soil. They aren't likely to contain organisms like fungus or bacteria.

If you're growing plants throughout the winter, you'll need a light source to make up for the lack of natural sunlight. Grow lamps are specifically designed to provide the right type of light to help plants grow. Common types of grow lamps are LED or fluorescent. Consider which plants will need more or less light exposure and place them at appropriate distances. Since your plants won't get rain, you're in charge of making sure they have enough but not too much water. Always check how dry the soil is before watering, ensure appropriate drainage, and be aware of the plants' needs. Self-watering containers, drip systems, and hydroponic kits that may use pumps or other methods to make the process easier can be helpful.

Caring for your garden Edible plants generally take more effort than just putting seeds in the soil and forgetting them, especially indoors where you have to create the environment. Each plant has different needs: some may need pruning, adjustments to watering and soil, and various harvesting or replanting times. To keep track of your plants' needs, it might help to keep a journal or binder or some kind of tracking system. In terms of harvesting, some plants need to be completely picked and then replanted. Other plants, especially herbs and leafy greens, can be harvested as you need while the plant grows and regrows where it was cut.

Love at First Taste Tips for Introducing Solid Foods to Your Baby

T

hroughout a child’s first years of life, there are several milestones for marking growth, development and progress toward maturity. As many parents can attest, few of those milestones are as messy, imperfect and joyful as those associated with a baby’s first tastes of new foods and flavors. The 2020-25 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognize that from 6-24 months is a key age range for building healthy eating patterns with a variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Starting solid foods, such as oatmeal or pureed vegetables and fruits, is the first step. However, beginning this journey can often bring parents additional stress as they question what and how much is right to feed their child. Get your little one on the path to a lifetime of healthy eating habits with these tips from Dr. Whitney Casares, pediatric consultant for Gerber.

Let The Journey Begin Check with your pediatrician before starting solid foods. Most babies are ready around 6 months, but it’s important to not offer solids before 4 months. Around the middle of the first year of life, it is important for your baby to get iron from the foods he or she eats, especially if breastfed. Iron-fortified baby cereal can help provide this important nutrient to support healthy growth and brain development.

Some signs your baby is ready for solid foods are when he or she has good head control, sits up with help or support, brings objects to his or her mouth and seems interested in food others are eating. For the first attempts at feeding solids, pick a time of day when your baby is in good spirits, wide awake and mildly hungry. You can offer breastmilk or formula before solids, if necessary, so your child is not uncomfortably hungry. Make sure your baby is sitting up and secured in a highchair. Use a soft, rubbertipped spoon and start by guiding the spoon to your baby’s mouth with both your and your child’s hand on the spoon.

Introducing First Tastes Purees and infant cereal are wholesome and developmentally appropriate options for discovering solid foods and can help your baby discover a variety of flavors. Baby cereal is a good starting point for most babies because you can mix it with breastmilk or formula, and it is fortified with iron. This familiar taste can help your baby accept the new taste and texture of cereal. While stage-appropriate purees can be made at home, another way to make your transition to solids easy is with an option like Gerber’s My 1st Starter Kits that come with fruit and vegetable varieties making it simple for parents to introduce baby to high-quality, nutritious and appropriate foods.

Follow Baby’s Lead Your baby’s first tries at swallowing solid foods may be awkward and will likely require practice. If food is rejected, offer a f ew more spoonfuls and gauge your child’s response to decide whether to continue or try again another day. Responsive feeding is an approach that helps set your baby up for healthy eating habits. Observing your child’s reactions can help determine if he or she is adventurous or cautious, hungry or full. All of this can help you feed in a manner best suited for your baby. Look for cues your child is interested in eating more – smiling or reaching toward the spoon – as well as those that indicate fullness such as turning away, pushing the spoon away, leaning away from the spoon, shaking his or her head or spitting food out. Alternatively, baby-led weaning emphasizes exploration – of tastes, textures, colors and smells – and encourages baby to self-feed whole pieces of food cut into strips or small pieces. Spoons can also be preloaded for him or her, and this approach also promotes the development of gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and chewing. For more expert tips on introducing your baby to solids, visit Gerber.com. — Family Features Photos courtesy of Getty Images

State-of-the-Art Treatments ELIMINATE PAIN

P

ain in the knees, shoulders, neck, back and other areas can make everyday life uncomfortable or even agonizing. NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove provides the world’s most advanced non-surgical treatments and technologies that safely and naturally accelerate healing and reduce pain. State-of-the-art treatments include Laser therapy, which utilizes the power of light energy, and PRP therapy, which uses the power of a patient’s own platelet-rich plasma. Safe and natural, these proven treatments heal and restore body tissue that has been damaged due to age, injury and wear-and-tear. “We have great success with these therapies on shoulders, knees, hips, neck, low back and other areas,” says Dr. Glenn Sorrentino. “These are the exact same therapies used by professional sports teams to speed the healing process of their injured athletes.” Dr. Sorrentino explains that Laser therapy is an integral part of NJ Spine & Joint’s overall treatment protocol. “We get to the root of a patient’s problem and provide a unique combination of regenerative and rehabilitative treatments to heal and correct the problem. Many patients were told they had to get knee replacement or shoulder surgery, and we were able to help them avoid surgery.” PRP therapy, which may be provided in certain cases, works by using a patient’s own platelet-rich plasma, which is rich with protein growth factors, to restore the damaged area. Like Laser therapy, PRP stimulates your body’s own healing resources to repair damaged tissue, reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Dr. Glenn Sorrentino provides Laser therapy to accelerate healing.

“The human body has an amazing capability to heal itself,” says Dr. Sorrentino. “We help it along with these remarkable regenerative therapies so our patients can live healthy, pain-free lives.” Free consultations can be scheduled by appointment with Dr. Sorrentino by calling 973-433-0889.

Diamond Minds

The 5 Secrets

IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE…

O

ne of my first books that came out in 1995 was called Diamond in the Rough. It was based on the top traits of high achievers ranging from business leaders, top entertainers, sports legends, to inventors and brain surgeons. I created an audiobook, radio and tv show around the title and was relentless in bringing the book to the biggest direct sales teams in the country ranging from Mary Kay to Amway. Many of them had the goal of each rep becoming a diamond. So that was why I titled the book… Diamond in the Rough. The book became an international best-seller in multiple

languages and has been the inspiration for the foundation of my children’s book, The Adventures of Little Billy… IN SEARCH OF THE MAGIC TREE. Each of the animals in the story have Barry Farber been given the essential traits of the key chapters in Diamond in the Rough. Here are a few of the traits that have become the 5 Secrets in The Adventures of Little Billy that can be applied in our everyday lives:

Lawrence the Owl

Bosco the Bear

“Help all the animals that you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”

“Give a smile to all you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.”

I think the Owl and Zig Ziglar both agree that our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service. “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

It’s not just my opinion that attitude is essential for success. A study conducted by Harvard Business School determined that four factors are critical for success in business; information, intelligence, skill, and attitude. When these factors were ranked in importance, this particular study found that information, intelligence, and skill combined amounted to 7% of business success, and attitude amounted to 93%! What is true for business is also true for our lives—Attitude is overwhelmingly one of the most important factors to success.

(Lawrence’s Secret: Service)

(Bosco’s Secret: Attitude)

Sheba the Wolf (Sheba’s Secret: Courage)

“Be as brave as you can be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” There are many definitions of courage. They have to do with mental and moral strength to resist danger or hardship—firmness of mind and will in the face of extreme difficulty—and the capacity to meet adversity with fortitude and resilience. My favorite definition of courage is “readiness to deal with things fearlessly by reason of stouthearted temperament or a resolute spirit.”

Sherman the Turtle

(Sherman’s Secret: Determination) “Never give up on a dream that could be, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” “The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the promptings of a brave, determined spirit.” -Mark Twain

Ruppert the Toad

The Adventures of

(Ruppert’s Secret: Empathy) “Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find The Magic Tree.” “The nature of humanity, it’s essence, is to feel another’s pain as one’s own, and to act to take that pain away. There is nobility in compassion, a beauty in empathy, a grace in forgiveness.” -John Connolly

The Secrets that Little Billy discovers on his adventure seem like common sense to many of us, but then again common sense isn’t so common. We all just need a little reminder of what’s important and the Magic will be there.
