CommunityCentric Design in West Orange: A New Chapter for the

West Orange Public Library

Sunjana Thirumala Sridhar, a West Orange resident, West Orange Public Library trustee, urban designer and co-founder of DesignOGC, is behind the “Community Canvas,” a soon-to-be launched series of interactive art installations at the library aimed at fostering community engagement and building cultural awareness. The Community Canvas allows patrons to interactively share their visions for the library’s future.

Sunjana’s commitment to creating spaces that enhance community dialogue is seen through these interactive initiatives, inviting users to express their insights through art from different cultures. The library will soon welcome visitors at a special event to engage with the series of installations, reflecting the library’s dedication to constantly improving its offerings to the local community. Through these installations, public institutions like libraries and schools can gather authentic community data for better decision making, engaging patrons better, and building support for fundraising. Squishing Bugs and Cracking Jokes: A Comedic Campaign Against Invasive Pests

Donning himself The World’s #1 Spotted Lanternfly Squisher, Keith Haskel of Montclair is on a mission to eradicate the invasive pests. He’s using comedy to do it, pointing out that these bugs suck the sap out of trees (and then urinate it out above our unsuspecting heads). With no natural predators, they are rapidly multiplying and hurting the environment.

As a comedian and TV comedy writer/producer, Keith, who played “Bananaman” on “The Chris Gethard Show,” has a knack for making people laugh. He’s using this skill to raise awareness about this serious issue.

Haskel’s commitment to combating lanternflies has turned into a family affair. His children, Xander, 6, and Scout, 4, have joined him in his quest, making videos to help spread the word. His daughter Phoebe, 2, finds their actions hysterical.

Despite the lighthearted approach, Keith’s message is clear: lanternflies pose a serious threat to the environment, and action is needed to stop their destructive impact.

You can find Keith’s videos and social media on his website: keithhaskel.com.

Chasing Shadows:

The Adventures of Eclipse Aficionados

In the world of eclipse enthusiasts, there are die-hard chasers, and then there are the eclipse aficionados—those who take their passion to the next level, globe-trotting in pursuit of the perfect celestial spectacle. A month before the anticipated April 8, 2024 eclipse, Tracey Brosnan, hailing from West Orange, had already secured accommodations in Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada for an all-girls expedition to witness the total eclipse. Unsatisfied with the mere 91% coverage expected in New Jersey, Tracey orchestrated a grand plan: she invited her mother, Kate Correia, who flew in from Chicago, to join her and her friend, Paz Chacon, also from West Orange, for an unforgettable celestial adventure.

As Monday, April 8th dawned, the trio found themselves dressed warmly, under a clear blue sky, surrounded by fellow eclipse aficionados, eagerly awaiting the momentous event. Cheers erupted as the perfect diamond-ringed eclipse graced the heavens, casting an otherworldly glow upon the landscape. For Tracey and her companions, it was a culmination of meticulous planning and unwavering dedication—a moment frozen in time, unlikely to be replicated for another 46 years.

Long-Lost Sisters Reunited: A Tale of Discovery and Connection

Barbara Clarke Ruiz, of Glen Ridge, an activewear design consultant of global activewear brands, and founder of Lick You Silly pet products, had her life transformed by a DNA test. Three years ago, her cousin found a significant DNA match on Ancestry. com and confirmed it on 23 and Me — Barbara and her brother Michael had a half-sister named Lupe Ibarra.

The revelation shed light on their father’s history, a veteran of the Korean War. Lupe, a retired Nurse Assistant, was initially cautious. She had been put up for adoption at birth in Korea, grew up in California, and eventually connected with Barbara and family over Zoom. It was an emotional virtual meeting, with an in-person one to follow.

From left Barbara Clarke Ruiz and her half-sister Lupe Ibarra spend time getting to know oneanother during a trip by Lupe to NJ.

Barbara always wanted a sister. Despite their vastly different backgrounds — Barbara is African American while Lupe is half Korean — the sisters felt an instant bond, further cemented by their shared love for candy and cinnamon Jolly Ranchers.

Their ongoing relationship is a testament to the power of DNA testing in reuniting families. A video of the story is posted on Instagram and TikTok @barbaraclarkeruiz.

Seton Hall Preparatory and Table to Table Foster Impactful Collaboration

In the spirit of Easter, Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange collected 15 hams, totaling 120 lbs., from its community to brighten Easter for local families in need. Volunteers from Table to Table, New Jersey’s first food rescue organization, collected and delivered the hams to MEND, a hunger relief network in Essex County, advancing health equity through collaborative, community-driven programming.

(l-r) Matteo Spain,

Table to Table is celebrating 25 years of impactful work, having rescued and delivered enough food for over 311 million healthy meals throughout northern New Jersey. To mark this milestone, the organization aims to rescue and deliver enough fresh food for an additional 25 million meals this year, using its fleet of six trucks and volunteer-based app. To support Table to Table’s mission, visit tabletotable.org/donate.

Right at Home of Essex County Celebrates 20 Years of Heartfelt Care

West Orange resident Maeghan Scott and her mom, Melodie Toby, recently threw a fabulous bash to celebrate 20 incredible years of their homecare business, Right at Home of Essex County. Held at The Highlawn in West Orange, the party was a lively affair, with family and friends, partners from local organizations, West Orange leadership, and the corporate office joining in the festivities. There were speeches aplenty, a nostalgic look back at Right at Home’s journey, and heartfelt recognition for their longest-serving caregivers, all of whom have been with the agency from nine to nineteen years!

Two decades ago, Scott’s late father, Moses Scott, started the business, and seven years ago Scott and her mom stepped in to continue his legacy. Maeghan says, “Running Right at Home is so rewarding. We get to keep people safe and help them live out their desires as they age. It’s not just a job; it’s a way to honor people’s wishes and ensure they age safely with dignity and respect.”

Young Visionary’s Dream Becomes a Reality

IIn the bustling Terminal A at Newark Airport, where travelers rush to catch flights or wait for delays to pass, a small but significant addition has captured the hearts of many. It’s a lending library called “Let’s Read Today,” where travelers can borrow books for free. It is the brainchild of Livingston fifth-grader Sia Malhotra, who had a dream and made it happen! What started as a simple idea blossomed into a three-year journey of persistence, collaboration, and community support.

Sia’s inspiration came during a vacation to Alaska in 2021, where she encountered a library in an airport. Recognizing the potential for such a space to benefit travelers, especially children and those facing financial constraints, she set out to bring this concept to her local airport in New Jersey. Upon her return, she began reaching out to Port Authority of NY and NJ officials, expressing her vision for a library at Newark Airport.

After numerous emails and meetings, Sia’s idea gained traction. With the Port Authority’s support and Home Depot’s generosity in East Hanover, the library became a reality. Home Depot donated materials and built the library according to Sia’s design, including space for children’s and adult books.

The library, aptly named “Let’s Read Today,” opened in February of 2024 with an initial collection of 300-400 books. However, through Sia’s continued efforts and community donations, the library’s collection has grown to over 4,000 books, many of which are stored at Sia’s home until they make their way to the library. Private donors, schools, and local libraries have contributed to ensure a diverse and plentiful selection for travelers. While the goal is for travelers to pick up a book at the airport, read it

on the plane and/or during their trip, and then drop it off at the library upon their return home, the library still needs replenishing. Every few weeks, Sia and her parents take a ride to the airport to restock the shelves with books.

The library connects to Sia’s Let’s Read Today website through its mission of promoting literacy and providing access to books. The website serves as a platform for people to connect with Sia and donate books to the airport library. It also includes information about the library’s impact and how others can get involved in promoting literacy in their communities. The website acts as an extension of the physical library, spreading the message of the importance of reading and sharing stories.

The significance of Sia’s feat did not go unnoticed – NJ Governor Philip Murphy recently called to congratulate Sia on her achievement, recognizing the library’s importance in providing a sense of comfort and escape for travelers, especially during stressful travel times.

Looking ahead, Sia plans to expand the library concept to other terminals at Newark Airport and potentially to other nearby airports. With ongoing support from the community and organizations like Home Depot, Sia’s vision of a more literate and connected airport environment is on its way to coming to fruition.

New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra Program: A Symphony of Giving

TThe New Jersey Symphony has long been synonymous with musical excellence, but its impact extends beyond the concert hall. Through its New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra program, founded 25 years ago, the Symphony enriches the lives of about 200 young musicians annually, spanning grades 4-12. This initiative particularly benefits those from 11 underserved NJ communities, offering them unparalleled musical growth and personal development opportunities.

As the resident youth orchestra of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra brings together students of all skill levels who share a passion for music. Four sequentially leveled performing ensembles create a pathway for students to flourish and grow under the guidance of the Symphony’s expert faculty. Participants study instrument techniques through sectionals and semi-private lessons.

At the heart of the program is the String Ensemble, led by Naomi Youngstein of West Orange, a dedicated violinist. She has been a member of the New Jersey Symphony for an impressive 36 years. Her passion for music extends beyond performance, as she plays a vital role in the NJS’s Youth Orchestra program. Leading the String Ensemble, Naomi provides advanced training to young musicians, guiding them toward excellence in music. Naomi’s extensive experience and dedication make her a valuable mentor and leader in the Symphony’s Youth Orchestra program.

The String Ensemble provides advanced training in a smallgroup format, focusing on repertoire, instrument techniques, and rhythm classes. Students in the String Ensemble are prepared for advancement to the Repertory Orchestra and the Academy Orchestra, the program’s most advanced ensemble. The Repertory Orchestra, led by Sue On, presents a diverse range of traditional and contemporary pieces, encouraging students to broaden their musical horizons. The Academy Orchestra, conducted by Diego García, allows students to delve into classical and contemporary masterpieces, offering a comprehensive musical experience.

Each year, the Youth Orchestra program welcomes a limited number of advanced beginner to very advanced students, ensuring individualized attention and growth opportunities for each participant. Rehearsals begin in October and culminate in April concerts, providing a year-round musical experience. The impact of the Symphony’s Youth Orchestra program extends far beyond the concert hall. Graduates of the program have achieved remarkable success, pursuing music education and other majors at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Cornell, UPenn, NYU, and more. This is a testament to the

Naomi Youngstein works with members of the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra String Ensemble, which she leads.

program’s ability to nurture and develop young talent, making it a compelling choice for aspiring musicians.

The Symphony’s commitment to providing access to high-quality music education for all students, regardless of their background, is truly commendable. Through its Youth Orchestra program, the NJ Symphony is shaping the next generation of musicians and empowering young people to achieve their full potential.

Auditions for the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra program will take place on June 1st and 8th at Montclair State University. For more information about the youth orchestra program and audition requirements, visit njsymphony.org/education/youth-orchestras.

Rediscovering Life Transforming Women’s Health with

Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Are you struggling with PCOS symptoms, unexplained night sweats, debilitating periods, or fertility issues? If common solutions haven’t worked, it may be time to explore a more natural approach to regain your health in harmony with nature.

Meet Ellen, Renee, and Angie—women whose health journeys have been revitalized by Dr Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. Women’s health has historically been neglected, suffering from societal taboos and a lack of focused medical research. Issues like PCOS, endometriosis, and menopause have been quietly borne by women, often sidelining their own needs to prioritize others.

This Mother’s Day give a gift of health to a woman you love! We offer Gift Certificates!

A Holistic Revolution

At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we are committed to changing the narrative of women’s health. We believe every woman deserves to be heard, understood, and empowered. Our practice offers a comprehensive holistic approach, incorporating acupuncture, Chinese medicine, nutrition, and movement to address the diverse challenges of women’s health.

Transformative Patient Stories

Ellen’s PCOS Journey: Ellen knows the challenges of living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) all too well. Just like the nearly 5 million other women in the United States who suffer from PCOS, she experienced hormonal imbalances that caused irregular periods, acne, and thinning scalp hair. On top of that, her irregular menstrual cycle was affecting her fertility too.

Hormonal birth control kept some of her symptoms at bay but it had the unpleasant side effect of weight gain. After searching far and wide for the solution, she discovered Dr Aleksandra Mihajlovic’s practice. Dr Aleksandra understood Ellen’s story all too well. She too had a diagnosis of PCOS in her early 20s and understood the plague of irregular periods. It wasn’t until her late 30s, after months of regular acupuncture treatments that her periods finally became an uneventful monthly occurrence with no PMS, cramps, discomfort, or mood swings. Over years of practice, Dr Aleksandra developed her unique approach of blending acupuncture with ATP Bioresonance Therapy, nutritional guidance, and personalized herbal formulas. They helped Ellen finally regulate her hormones & metabolism which resulted in regular periods, clear skin, and a clear path to becoming a mother one day.

From Chaos to Calm – Renee’s Story: Hot flashes and mood swings made Renee’s life unbearable. Every day felt like a battle against her own body. Women spend 1/3 of their life in menopause. While we all expect teenagers to be moody, changing hormones during menopause and their effects on the female body are still not widely discussed or understood. It is estimated that by 2030, 1.2 billion women will be in menopause around the world.

The modern style of fast-paced life, where women shoulder many care-taking responsibilities, showers women’s bodies with stress hormones. By the time they hit their late 40s they are exhausted with fewer reserves left to aid them seamlessly into yet another physiological transition - menopause.

Renee felt constantly exhausted, breaking into a sweat at the moment’s notice day and night, short-tempered, weepy, and somehow steadily gaining weight despite her efforts to eat healthy and exercise. She felt like she was losing her battle, and her family began avoiding her, never knowing what mood she would be in. Dr Aleksandra’s acupuncture treatments brought her much-needed relaxation and hormone regulation. Renee found that her sleep improved, her hot flashes disappeared and with a better understanding of her new metabolic profile, she was able to lose weight. She felt like a new woman, another butterfly emerging from a chrysalis. She was ready for a new stage in life, which according to the teachings of Chinese Medicine is the time for teaching one’s acquired wisdom and pursuing spiritual endeavors.

Angie’s Dream of Motherhood: Angie’s journey to motherhood was filled with obstacles. Fertility struggles left her feeling defeated and hopeless. Just like many other women who deal with fertility issues, she confessed that she felt like her troubles were a personal failing as a woman. But with the compassionate care of Dr Aleksandra, Angie’s dream of becoming a mother became a reality. The nonjudgmental and holistic approach of Dr Aleksandra and her team empowered Angie in her natural ability to create life. Alongside her partner Steve (after all, it takes two to make a baby!), she received a unique blend of acupuncture, herbal remedies, LED light therapy, and moxibustion as part of her personalized fertility treatments.

Angie & Steve welcomed their bundle of joy into the world the following year. The thousands of years of knowledge accumulated in Chinese Medicine offer hope and solutions to many women and couples on their fertility journey. Whether it is conceiving unassisted or with the advances of modern ART (assisted reproductive technologies) acupuncture increases chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby.

Comprehensive Care for All Stages

From managing menstrual irregularities, and assisting in becoming pregnant to navigating the complexities of menopause, our holistic integrative treatments empower women to live fully at every stage of life.

At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we understand that women’s health goes beyond just regulating the menstrual cycle. Our carefully crafted treatments address a wide range of issues that are often intricately connected to our hormones, including recurrent migraines, metabolic imbalances, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and mood swings.

R Rainbow Child Care Center & Preschool of Roseland Hosts Successful Community Workers Day

Rainbow Child Care Center & Preschool of Roseland United Methodist Church hosted a Community Workers Day on April 10th, a day filled with joy and excitement for the children. As part of the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child, the event featured parents, grandparents, and friends who volunteered to share their job descriptions briefly and age-appropriately. They also set up “touch and see” tables where the children could try out their trade tools and explore vehicles lined up in the parking lot, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm.

Louis Mauriello of Champion Waste Removal was one of the volunteers who brought his truck to the event. He patiently helped each child climb in and out of the driver’s seat and allowed them to blow the air horns. Mauriello says, “There is nothing like a child’s first time sitting in a big truck and blowing the air horns.”

This year’s career representatives were a diverse group, a true reflection of the world of work. From Mediocre to Immersive: ENHANCE YOUR HOME VIEWING AND SOUND EXPERIENCE

IImagine watching an action-packed movie and hearing the subtle rustle of leaves behind you or feeling the rumble of explosions reverberating throughout the room. With surround sound, every sound effect, dialogue, and musical score is rendered with precision and clarity, transporting viewers into the heart of the action.

Upgraded sound systems enhance the emotional impact of storytelling by immersing viewers in the audio landscape of the narrative. Whether it’s the whisper of a character’s voice or the crescendo of a dramatic soundtrack, surround sound elevates the viewing experience by evoking a deeper sense of immersion and engagement.

When Ken Gorman and Alan Weissman met 25 years ago, they became fast friends. In 2021, they founded AVision Design Group and set out to make homeowners’ entertainment experiences dynamic.

In addition to installing the necessary equipment and hiding the wires, they also analyze and guide homeowners on the best choices for their needs, and teach them how to use the audio/visual systems.

“We can transform any house into a smart home, incorporate an elevated music system throughout the house and convert any room in your home into a home theater,” says Alan. “It all comes down to simplicity. Nowadays you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a tremendous viewing and sound experience.”

“Our main goal is to provide innovative and best-in-class technology solutions that are simple to use, regardless of project size or scope. Whether that is just a soundbar below the TV, or a full-blown surround sound system with speakers, a subwoofer and a receiver that will give them the true theater-like experience with every movie that they watch.”

He says if you get a Sonos® soundbar mounted below the TV, you’ll have the best of both worlds – much better TV sound and the dual functionality of music.

“Our clients have been extremely happy with our work,” says Ken. “We pride ourselves on perfection.” Adds Alan, “Service is at the heart of our culture and we work hard every day to live up to it. We want our clients to have the best experience possible throughout the entire process.”

Great Ideas for Outdoor Living Spaces

DDo you dream of having a home that everyone loves to visit for outdoor parties and get-togethers? The options for your landscape are ultimately endless… Depending on your lifestyle and available space, there are several ideas to consider when expanding your home by enhancing your outdoor living space.

Add an outdoor dining area, outdoor kitchen, or a great playground area for the kids and your landscape will become more functional and entertaining to enjoy. Include a pavilion or swimming pool with a bar, an outdoor fireplace, or a water feature in your design. Use all the elements that inspire you to relax and have a good time in your space. Here’s how to include some of these ideas when designing your outdoor living area.

OUTDOOR DINING AREAS

Every outdoor entertaining area needs a comfortable dining. It extends your living and entertaining space, so you don’t have to go inside to eat. Everyone loves dining alfresco!

Work with your designer to find the best location to dine in your yard. Our team can help you create a layout plan to fit your environment. Together, we will find a central location to make cooking, dining, and cleanup easy. We can even include a stylish pergola or pavilion to frame your new outdoor dining area with real style and protection from the elements.

For less formal dining, or to keep the cook company, include an outdoor bar in or near the kitchen. Guests can enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks at the bar before they sit down to an outdoor dinner.

THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN

Your outdoor kitchen can be large or compact. Built-in grills, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers are all available so you can fully prepare a complete meal and never miss a moment of your party fun.

Attractive and functional granite countertops can complement outdoor cabinetry to store dishes, glassware, and utensils. No more making multiple trips to and from the house. Everything is accessible and in one place!

Does your family have a fondness for pizza? You’ll love an outdoor pizza oven to make pies any time of year! And these ovens are not just for pizza, you can grill vegetables and meats too.

POOLS AND POOLSCAPES

A pool is a dramatic addition to any home and can offer your family and guests the perfect space to experience that “just escaped to a faraway resort” feel. Everyone enjoys a good staycation.

Add a pool or poolscape complete with a patio to your backyard oasis. Pools can be installed in all sizes and shapes. They can even include swim-up bars and waterfall grottos.

Surrounding patios constructed of pavers or natural stone can incorporate beautiful plantings and decor. Many families opt for a cabana or pavilion near their pool to maximize the outdoor paradise experience.

BEGIN WITH A KNOWLEDGEABLE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Above all else, working with an expert to create your design will ensure its functionality and beauty. Whether you have a half-acre or three-plus acres of landscape, creating an outdoor entertainment area that’s inviting, comfortable and meets your needs is the ultimate goal.

Sponzilli Landscape Group has over 50 years of design and build experience creating award-winning outdoor spaces. Our team of professional landscape specialists can help develop a plan that works best for your property, budget, existing architecture, and entertainment needs.

Go to our website to see a huge portfolio of landscape design ideas and call us today for a free consultation to begin the process of making your home really ‘Stand Apart’ as a complete outdoor paradise!

Bringing Outdoor Spaces to Life

The Benefits of Using 2D or 3D Designs for Landscape Project

Landscape design is the art of transforming outdoor spaces into beautiful and functional areas. Before any project can begin, it’s essential to have a clear vision of how the result will look. This is where 2D and 3D designs come into play.

2D designs are precise representations of a landscape project. They meticulously depict the layout of outdoor spaces, including the strategic placement of plants, trees, and hardscaping elements. These designs are instrumental in visualizing how the project will seamlessly integrate into the existing space and planning the overall layout. However, they don’t provide a realistic view of the finished project.

3D designs, in contrast, offer an immersive and exciting view of the final result. These designs utilize advanced

computer software to create a 3D model of the landscape project. This innovative approach allows designers and clients to virtually ‘walk through’ the space and experience it from all angles. 3D designs can also demonstrate how lighting and shadows will interact with the space, providing a more realistic representation of the finished project.

Both 2D and 3D designs have benefits and drawbacks. 2D designs are a costeffective way to plan a project and provide a clear layout of the space. 3D designs give a more realistic representation of the finished project, but they can be more expensive and time-consuming to create.

Ultimately, the choice between 2D and 3D designs comes down to the client’s needs and preferences. Using either method, a skilled landscape designer can create a beautiful and functional outdoor space.

Window Works is Transforming Outdoor Living

AAs the weather warms up, thoughts naturally drift to spending time outdoors. Window Works offers an array of solutions for transforming outdoor spaces into comfortable retreats. Suburban Essex recently spoke with JC Rocha, Window Works’ awning and window treatment specialist, to uncover the benefits of their products.

Q: What should people consider this spring and summer regarding awnings, louvered roofs, pergola roofs, and exterior screens?

A: Now is an ideal time to think about adding shade and protection to outdoor spaces. Awnings provide relief from the sun, while louvered and pergola roofs offer customizable shade and weather protection. Exterior screens are also useful for blocking out the sun and insects during outdoor gatherings.

Q: What advantages do retractable awnings offer?

A: Retractable awnings instantly provide shade, extending the outdoor space’s use, protecting from harmful UV rays, and preventing furniture fading. They can reduce indoor cooling bills by blocking sunlight and add value and curb appeal to homes.

Q: How do pergola awnings enhance outdoor areas?

A: Pergola awnings are a versatile outdoor solution, offering immediate shade and enhancing the usability of outdoor spaces. They create a comfortable outdoor room, define specific areas within a pergola, and provide protection from the sun and rain.

Q: What are the benefits of exterior screens?

A: Exterior screens provide privacy while maintaining visibility and reduce glare, making outdoor spaces more comfortable and enjoyable.

Q: What features and benefits do louvered roofs provide?

A: Louvered roofs offer durability, versatility, and instant outdoor living space creation. Louvers can adjust sunlight and shade, protect from rain, and withstand high winds and heavy snow loads. They are rust-proof and customizable with features like fans and lighting, enhancing comfort and usability.

Q: In summary, what should people keep in mind when considering outdoor upgrades for spring and summer?

A: Now is the perfect time to schedule installations of these products to ensure they’re in place for the warmer months ahead. Planning ahead allows for ample time to select the right products, schedule installation, and enjoy the benefits of shade, comfort, and style as soon as the weather permits.

Create a Stunning Deer-Proof Landscape with CLC’s Advice for Deer-Resistant Plants and Shrubs

GGreat designs begin with great ideas. At CLC Landscape Design, Rich Cording, owner and landscape architect, and his two sons, Rich Jr., a construction layout expert, and Eric, a sales professional, are the core employees. As the winner of nine major landscaping awards in New Jersey in 2023, CLC Landscape Design is ready to make your landscaping dreams come true.

One of the biggest concerns of area residents is deer trafficking in their Northern New Jersey residential areas. Maintaining beautiful plants and shrubs with the heavy deer population is a challenge. Known for his expertise in creating attractive, colorful, and lasting splashes of color all year, Rich Jr. has extensive experience and education with

Catmint and

deer-resistant plants and shrubs. What are some of these shrubs and plants that fulfill these objects?

Shade trees are usually not problematic if they have high branches the deer cannot reach. Cherry trees, such as pink flair cherries, not only provide color but also safety from deer. They offer a deep orange/ red color in the fall, and because they bloom later in the year, they avoid frost damage by flowering later than most plants. These are just some of the reasons why they are a great choice for your landscape.

Evergreen shrubs are also deer-repellent. Boxwood, a resilient and beautiful shrub, fairs well in the Northern New Jersey climate, and Skip Laurel shrubs maintain glossy green leaves year-round, adding a

touch of elegance to your landscape. The Gold-thread Cyprus, with its vibrant and ever-present color, is a true showstopper, providing beauty and interest throughout the year.

CLC Landscape Design uses its artist’s palate of colors to create beautiful and lasting foliage on residual properties. Pictures are magnificent, deer-resistant plants and shrubs that provide year-round enjoyment.

CHOOSING THE MOST DURABLE OUTDOOR FURNITURE—

Cast Aluminum, Rattan, or Resin

DDurability is key when it comes to outdoor furniture. You want something that can withstand the elements and be used daily without falling apart. Three popular options for patio furniture are cast aluminum, rattan, and resin.

Cast aluminum patio furniture is durable, rust-resistant, and lightweight. It can withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions, making it a top choice for outdoor spaces. Cast aluminum patio furniture comes in many designs, from dining sets to conversation sets, often featuring decorative elements like scrolling or latticework.

Rattan, also known as wicker, is made from a type of palm tree known for its strength and flexibility. The natural fibers of rattan are woven together to create solid, sturdy

furniture that can withstand the elements and daily use. Rattan is also lightweight, making it easy to move around and rearrange your patio furniture as needed. Resin patio furniture is made from a strong, synthetic material that is weather-resistant and requires minimal maintenance. It is resistant to fading and chipping and comes in various colors and textures.

Resin patio furniture is available in many styles, from traditional to contemporary, and can be cushioned for added comfort.

When it comes to choosing the most durable option for your outdoor space, it depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Consider each material’s style, weight, and maintenance, and choose the one that best suits your needs. With a little research and careful consideration, you can find the perfect patio furniture that will provide years of enjoyment in your outdoor space.

Make Gift-Giving a Breeze: Creating a Registry for Any Event

If you’re planning for an upcoming event like a wedding, baby shower, housewarming party or a birthday celebration, creating a registry can be a gamechanger. Especially if you’re expecting many guests, it can be overwhelming for them to decide what to bring as a gift. In such cases, a registry can be a lifesaver for both the hosts and the guests. It not only ensures that the guests bring items that you truly need and desire, but also eliminates the possibility of receiving duplicate gifts.

So, whether you’re celebrating a significant milestone or planning an intimate dinner party, creating a registry can make the gift-giving process stress-free and convenient for everyone involved.

Choosing the Right Wedding Favors for Your Guests

CChoosing wedding favors can be a fun and exciting part of wedding planning. You want your guests to appreciate and use the favors you give them, so consider their tastes and preferences.

When considering wedding favors, it’s important to align them with your wedding theme and style. This not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of your wedding but also makes the favors more memorable. For instance, if you’re having a beach wedding, consider giving out personalized sunglasses or beach towels.

Practical wedding favors such as bottle openers or keychains are always a hit with guests. They’re something guests can use daily and will remind them of your special day. Thank you pads are also a thoughtful and practical wedding favor that your guests will surely appreciate.

Personalized wedding favors are a great way to make your guests feel special. Consider adding your names or wedding date to the favors for a personal touch.

EDUCATION

Spilling the Secrets to Early Literacy

FFor young children, learning to read is a critical step in their educational journeys, as literacy helps build cognitive abilities and language proficiency and has a direct impact on later academic achievement.

While there are no shortcuts to early literacy, there are steps parents can take to promote the development of children’s reading abilities. Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at The Goddard School, and Steve Metzger, award-winning author of more than 70 children’s books, share this guidance for parents.

Get Started Early

It’s never too early to start reading with children. In fact, they respond to being read to prenatally. One of the best ways to encourage early literacy is modeling the act of reading. Young children love to imitate, and if they see their parents reading, they are more likely to want to read themselves.

Use Conversation to Build Literacy

To help build their vocabularies, consistently engage children in conversation. Literacy is more than reading and writing; it’s also listening and speaking. Children understand words before they can articulate them, so don’t be discouraged if it feels like a one-way conversation.

Expose Children to More Than Books

Make your home environment print-rich, as the more exposure children have to letters and words, the better. For example, keep magnetic letters and words on the fridge, put labels on your toy containers and position books and magazines in different rooms. Also remember reading isn’t limited to books. Words are everywhere, from street signs to restaurant menus.

Let Them Take the Lead

Children engage with books in different, developmentally appropriate ways. Some children quickly flip through pages or only look at pictures while others might make up stories or their own words or songs. Some only want to read the same book over and over and some want to read a new book every time.

Establish a Routine

Parents of young children often have busy and hectic lives, so it isn’t always easy to find time to read. Consistency is key, so be intentional about setting aside time for reading every day - and stick to it.

Select the Right Books

Helping young children choose books is an important part of their learningto-read process. Developmental appropriateness is critical. For infants and toddlers, start with nursery rhymes, that grasp children’s attention through repetition, rhythm, and rhyming. Visuals are also important because they aren’t yet pulling words off the page. For emerging readers, choose books that align with their interests.

Expose children to both fiction and non-fiction books. Non-fiction provides real-world knowledge children crave and helps them make sense of what they read in fictional stories. For example, the learnings about the life cycle of a bat they read in “Bat Loves the Night,” a non-fiction book, can help them better understand what’s happening in “Stellaluna,” a fiction book about a young bat.

Foster a Love of Reading

Children’s early exposure to books can set the stage for a lifetime of reading. Make reading a time for discovery. Take children to a library or bookstore and encourage them to explore and find books on their own. Display genuine interest in their selections and use books as a tool for engaging and connecting with them. Don’t pressure children to learn how to read. Accept, validate, and encourage them as they progress on their unique literacy journeys.

Walking Should Be a Regular Part of Your Routine

Walking is a great way to get exercise, clear your mind, and enjoy the outdoors.   Setting a walking goal can help motivate you to get moving. Maybe you want to walk a certain number of steps each day or work up to walking a certain distance. Having a goal in mind gives you something to work towards and helps you track your progress.

Walking with a friend can transform the experience into a joyous adventure, keeping you both accountable and entertained. Engaging in a lively conversation can make the time fly by. If your walking route is starting to feel monotonous, why not switch it up? Explore a new neighborhood or park, or discover a hiking trail. The thrill of exploring new surroundings can inject a fresh sense of excitement into your walking routine.

Listening to your favorite music or a podcast can make walking more enjoyable. Joining a walking group is a great way to meet new people and stay motivated.

The more you walk, the easier it will become. Try to make walking a daily habit, even if it’s just for a short amount of time. Soon enough, walking will become second nature.  Walking is a great way to improve your physical and mental health. With some inspiration and motivation, you can make walking a regular part of your routine.

On the Nose

Changing the focal point of the face

T“The nose is the focal point of the face and tends to get a lot of attention, so changing some aspects of it can really open up the face and achieve a level of harmony,” says Dr. Sean Herman of The Plastic Surgery Center.

Most patients who desire rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” do so for aesthetic reasons. They may want a slimmer nose, or to eradicate a bump. Others do it for functional reasons – they want to be able to breathe better.

Dr. Herman is an expert and has had extensive training encompassing the full spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. “It’s your face – you wear it every day, so patients have to have a strong level of trust in the surgeon they choose,” he says.

“I have the opportunity to really change someone’s life, how they feel about themselves and function in the daily world. That’s really rewarding.”

Be Prepared to Save a Life by Learning CPR

CCardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving skill that, with the right training, anyone can learn. It’s not as complex as it may seem. CPR involves a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths to help maintain blood flow and oxygenation to the body’s vital organs, such as the brain and heart. When someone experiences cardiac arrest, which is when the heart suddenly stops beating, performing CPR immediately can significantly increase their chances of survival.

CPR is a critical skill that can be used in a variety of emergencies, including heart attacks, drownings, and choking incidents. The American Heart Association estimates that over 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals each year in the United States, and only about 10% of those individuals survive. However, when CPR is performed immediately, the chances of survival can increase by two or three times.

Learning CPR is a valuable life skill that can make a significant difference in an emergency. You can save a life by being prepared and knowing what to do. The American Red Cross has online classes and in-person classes in Fairfield. For more information, visit, www.redcross.org

We are so excited to introduce Look Well, a curated, group of non-invasive therapies designed to rejuvenate your face, skin and body through ground-breaking technologies. We hope you take the time for yourself to talk, laugh and learn about ways to enhance your radiance.

There will be demonstrations, discussions, refreshments & generous vouchers for all.

A Natural Approach to Beauty Personalized Treatments for Every Face and Body

After working in hospitals for a number of years as a physician associate, Lena Berlin was able to fulfill her dream of opening her own boutique medical aesthetic studio, Berlin Beauty, last October.

“It’s so rewarding,” she says. “Most people don’t realize how much of a difference helping people feel better about themselves actually makes. They think it’s all about Botox® and fillers, but there’s so much more to it.”

Lena explains that a lot of people have asymmetries in their face or acne scarring while others may have TMJ pain and can’t sleep at night. “It’s about correcting those issues and more.”

She and her husband, Dr. Fred Berlin, who is the medical director, ensure treatments are done in a safe and effective manner. Lena herself performs all procedures such as lip fillers, Botox, and microneedling.

“Berlin Beauty is my baby,” she says. “I’m the person who treats you and who you can reach out to with questions. I’m very accessible, and I give clients that personable approach.”

From the moment clients walk in the door, Lena wants them to feel beautiful, valued and special. “I go out of my way to make everyone feel that way. I listen to what people want, and

HEALTH AND WELLNESS: BEAUTY & SELF-CARE

I only suggest minor, natural changes because I believe everyone is beautiful in their own way.”

ONE COHESIVE PLAN

OThis month I had the pleasure to sit down and speak with Richard Davis, President and CEO of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. What I enjoyed about our conversation was a sincere effort by the hospital to really want the community to live a healthy lifestyle, so they do not have to endure some of the treatments that they have. In addition, their focus on listening to the community to help shape what they build and how they deliver care helps them partner with other community members and groups to deliver specialized patient care and more.

Barry Farber: Tell me about the new, free-standing Cancer Center being built on the hospital campus and how it came about.

Richard Davis: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center has a long-standing reputation as a regional leader in cancer care. As we looked at the demographics for NJ, we unfortunately saw that the incident rate of cancer is predicted to escalate over the next 10 to 20 years. And, in working with our community and patient population to understand their needs and desires, we said to ourselves that we want to provide patient-centered and research-driven cancer care from some of the region’s top oncologists to help our community now and into the future.

BF: How did the planning and structure of the new Cancer Center take place with all the technology involved?

RD: We believe that the best thing for our patients is providing access to all our oncology services under one roof. That includes our medical, radiation, and surgical oncology teams. In talking with clinicians and patients, it was clear

that the best way to treat a cancer patient is to bring all our clinicians together with a patient and really map out their plan of care based on their particular type of cancer.

Then, we asked ourselves, what technology would we need to develop a comprehensive view of what the best plan of care is for a patient? As a result, the new Cancer Center will have a full array of imaging, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, etc., a pharmacy, a lab, and the latest linear accelerator technology. To support a healing environment, we also have a beautiful outdoor terrace and a whole host of psychosocial and holistic support services.

BF: What differentiates this cancer center from any other places around the state and the U.S.?

RD: Beyond providing easy access to comprehensive cancer care under one roof, the other unique distinction is that through our partnership with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only comprehensive National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we can offer our patients access to the most advanced treatment options including clinical trials.

BF: Do you have any programs that address how important food and diet is for building a strong immune system so that we can prevent or deal with some of the cancer that we’re seeing that’s so prevalent today? I know there are so many studies including the China study that looks at how changing your diet from meat and dairy to a Whole Foods plant-based program has a huge impact on our health. Is there anything you’re doing to address that?

RD: Sure. As part of our prevention efforts, we work with the community to provide education on the risks of cancer and a healthy lifestyle. A recent program focused on the link between alcohol and cancer. At “Strollin’ Through the Colon,” people could actually walk through an inflatable, 20-foot replica of the human colon to learn about polyps and the importance of colon cancer screening to reduce your risk for cancer.

Within our health system, we are working to advance innovative strategies in high-quality patient care, education, and research to address both the clinical and social determinants of health. In doing so, there are certainly economic issues to deal with, so our system is doing several things to help folks find better housing and make sure they are eating the proper diet.

The new Cancer Center will include a kitchen where patients can work with a chef to learn about different types of nutritional, healthy meals that they can easily prepare.

BF: Once the Cancer Center opens, what would some of the accomplishments and goals be like that would satisfy you that it’s become a success?

RD: We are looking to hear that our patients and their families feel they are being cared for in a compassionate, seamless fashion. That in talking with all their providers that they together are creating one cohesive plan of care in which they feel supported through every step of their cancer journey.
