Livingston Resident Enjoys

Taking Photos of the Night Sky

Wayne Zuhl of Livingston is an amateur astronomer/ astrophotographer who enjoys taking photos of what he sees in the sky including planets, constellations, stars, comets, galaxies, the milky way, star clusters, nebulae, eclipses, and more. He also loves talking about astronomy with people on his podcast called, The AstroGuy Podcast, where he interviews other amateur astronomers and talks about what’s visible in the sky. Additionally, he is involved in a Rotary Club project to put telescopes in libraries for residents to borrow. Wayne tells people who are just starting out in astronomy that they can see a lot using binoculars before moving up to telescopes including the moons of Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, Saturn’s rings, clusters, and galaxies. “I find this hobby to be very humbling,” he says. “I get a sense of our place in the universe.” To see some of what Wayne has captured, go to astrobin.com/users/Nighthoek

Verona’s F.N. Brown Elementary School Wins Philanthropy Award

Table to Table, NJ’s first food rescue organization, has recognized F.N. Brown Elementary School in Verona with the 2022 Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation Award for Student Philanthropy for their support of a Bag a Lunch, Help a Lunch fundraiser. Of the many schools that participated, F.N. Brown was the top fundraiser. The students raised enough funds to provide 31,530 meals for their hungry neighbors throughout Northern NJ. To raise the funds, participants were asked to donate what they would spend on lunch for a day, week, month or more. For every dollar raised, 10 meals were provided to hungry neighbors. “We are very proud to be part of this initiative, as we know it has a positive impact on others in need,” said F.N. Brown Elementary School Principal Dr. Anthony Lanzo. To learn more, visit tabletotable.org.

Caldwell/West Caldwell Education Foundation

5K Caldwell Classic is a Huge Success

Recently, the Caldwell/West Caldwell Education Foundation (CWCEF) held its annual 5K fundraiser, called the Caldwell Classic. It was preceded by a Fun Run for children ages 6 and under, a DJ, and children’s activities, as well as sponsor giveaways. Carly Iacullo of North Caldwell, and Ben Lattimer, of Caldwell were the overall Women’s and Men’s winners of the 5K. Lincoln School took home the trophy for the highest percentage of participating students and teachers. 100 percent of profits generated will go towards programs benefitting all children in the Caldwell/West Caldwell school district. Since the CWCEF’s inception in 2005, over $200,000 has been awarded to fund programs and equipment including a business modeling program at JCHS, STEM programs, and purchases of updated books. This year’s event honored CWCEF founding members Theresa DiMasi and Marie LanFrank, whose legacies and vision are still at the heart of the Foundation’s mission.

Kindergartener of Essex Fells Runs Charitable Lemonade Stand

Essex Fells resident, Scarlett Caggiano, 6, ran a lemonade stand this summer, where she sold lemonade, cookies, and other refreshments. The $2745.00 proceeds benefiting her two friends with neuroblastomas—residents of Verona and Washington Township. Scarlett came up with the idea to hold this year’s fundraiser after running a lemonade stand the summer before, with the $500 proceeds raised benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand, an American pediatric cancer charity founded by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who suffered from neuroblastoma.

Scarlett’s mom, Kristi, helped her build the stand and make the goodies and drinks. She is very proud of Scarlett, and said, “Watching my daughter raise money and show genuine care for others fills my heart with immense pride. Her empathy shines brightly. I want her to know that compassion can make all the difference, and she is truly making a positive impact.” Those interested in contributing to the cause can send monies via Venmo to @sweetscarlettfund.

Caldwell Family Raises Money for Alzheimer’s Disease

Rita and Dave Whetton of Caldwell are determined to put Alzheimer’s Disease in the spotlight and have been doing so since 2015. They do so in honor of Rita’s dad, Lorenzo Malanga, who passed away from dementia in 2018 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012. Since they first created their walk team, Larry’s Clippers, in 2015, in Lorenzo’s honor, the Whettons and their son have been holding fundraisers, talking with lawmakers, and educating the public.

In October 2022, the family hosted a British Afternoon Tea fundraiser at Caldwell United Methodist Church, where they raised $2,300. In June 2023, they raised $5,200 during their 7th annual backyard fundraiser. They

have also held music trivia events for the cause at Rock N Joe’s in Caldwell, participated in Alzheimer’s walks, and during the holidays, they gift wrap at Willowbrook Mall for the Alzheimer’s Association. In addition, each year, they go to Washington, DC, to talk with legislators like Mikie Sherrill about dementia-related legislation, such as having Medicare pay for the latest drugs that show promise.

On October 8th, from 1-3 pm, they will be holding another British Afternoon Tea fundraiser at Caldwell United Methodist Church that will involve lots of teapots, British flag decorations, desserts on tiered plates, a trivia game, baked goods, and more.

Guests will be treated to unlimited tea and scones for a $28 per person entrance fee. The money raised will be donated to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, a charity that gives 100% of all donations to Alzheimer’s researchers to help advance a cure.

“We are trying hard to keep Alzheimer’s in the spotlight because it can sometimes feel taboo to talk about it,” says Rita. “There is a lot of stigma attached to it, so educating people and normalizing the disease is important.”

For more information, to donate, or to purchase tickets for the Afternoon Tea, please send an email to: ritawhetton2000@gmail.com.

Livingston Dog Lover Launches Livingston Lost Dog Task Force

It’s hard to find a Facebook post about dogs in Livingston and not see resident Staci Ruderman Weiner not involved. Whether it is a post regarding a lost dog, cute images for a dog calendar (she makes at least one calendar a year of Livingston dogs via her Facebook page called PUPPARAZZI: Dog Adventures!), a post about dog rescue (she is involved with WISE Animal Rescue), or a post about dog sitting (her business, which is called Purr-Fetch LLC Boarding for small dogs and walking service)— she is always tagged or offering help and advice.

So it makes sense that Staci sprung into action after seeing yet another lost dog post in Livingston to help find it. However, this time, she created the Livingston Lost Dog Task Force to make finding the dog easier. Within one day of posting her idea online, over 100 volunteers from all over town were signed up. And the list is growing by the day.

Her goal is to organize the list of volunteers by the section of town they live in so that if and when there is a lost dog—she can set a team living nearby into action to locate the lost dog systematically.

“Whenever I see that there is a lost dog, I feel an impulse to help find it. It pulls on my heartstrings,” Staci says. “However, it is usually hard to figure out where to go, to know where people have looked, and there is never a plan. With this new Livingston Lost Dog Task Force, we can put up flyers and track where people are looking and where they still need to search.”

Staci says that when one loses a dog, “they are not always thinking clearly,

so to have someone do that for you is so important. Livingston is communityoriented, and they love their dogs, so it makes sense to have something like this to help each other out,” she says.

“Accidents happen,” says Staci. “Many people focus on feeling guilty instead of acting fast when it isn’t always their fault. Losing a dog can happen to anyone. You can leave a door open by accident, the dog can sneak out when someone unexpectedly comes to the door, or they can simply slide out of their leash and go running.”

To add your name to the Livingston Lost Dog Task Force, send an email to Staci at: ajdog@ymail.com.

Montclair, NJ’s outdoor dance festival, will return for its tenth and final year, “Celebrating New Jersey.” Live performances will include acclaimed tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith, Nai-Ni Chen and Company, Maxine Steinman & Dancers, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts and more. Also included in this year’s program will be the return of five of the six winners of the yearly Dance on the Lawn “Emerging Commissioned NJ Choreographer” award.

Dance on the Lawn

For ten years, Dance on the Lawn served as a showcase and mentoring launchpad for NJ and NY’s finest choreographic talent. The yearly DOTL Festival offered Montclair residents and neighboring communities a sneak peek at emerging and established artists from New Jersey and the New York area.

Founded by Montclair resident Charmaine Warren in 2014, Dance on the Lawn hoped to increase New Jersey’s exposure to dance by bringing professional and

emerging companies, plus students of dance from around the state, together to perform in a community setting. In addition to offering presentation opportunities, Dance on the Lawn created an “Emerging Commissioned New Jersey Choreographer” and mentor program to help support young, emerging artists.

Steampunk Themed Train Rides at Whippany

Railway Museum

The Whippany Railway Museum, an all-volunteer non-profit, will host its first “Steampunk Themed Train Rides.” Steampunk is clothing, costumes, gadgets, and styles inspired by the Victorian-era and 19th-century industrial steam power… creating a retrofuturistic look and aesthetics.

Visitors can dress in Victorian-style steampunk attire, such as vests, corsets, top hats, goggles, etc. (though not required.) Explore and take pictures in front of the historic steam locomotive, No. 385, built in 1907, and the 1918 Railbus. Ride back in time onboard the beautifully restored mahogany-interior premium club cars—the 1912 “Millionaire’s Express” Subscription Car or the 1927 “Jersey Coast” Club Car. Passengers can also choose to have the fun of riding in one of the vintage cabooses.

Also, on the Museum property, that day will be several Steampunk vendors selling steampunk wear and souvenirs. At the same time, a Whippany Railway Museum kiosk will offer up antique lanterns, railroad hardware, and other rail and transportation artifacts. Train ride tickets include entrance to the Museum building.

LIGHT AT THE END

“Suddenly I felt nauseous. My head started pounding and it felt like my skull was splitting in half. This started in college. I remember sitting in class and not knowing what was happening to me. The fluorescent lights only made it worse, and I began to feel dizzy before eventually my vision gave out completely. The stereotypical college rites of passage like loud music and strobe lights at concerts would often trigger a splitting headache that would often progress into a debilitating migraine and last for days!

Almost forty now, I have dealt with migraines an average of twice a week for two decades. It makes having a ‘normal’ life hard. It is almost guaranteed that one will rear its ugly head 2 days before my period and will not let up for several days.

My migraines often make it impossible to work, to care for my young daughters...I’m afraid of driving or going to concerts and movies with my husband because there’s always a risk of being in excruciating pain. I’m scared to live my life!”

This often-too-common story was shared with us by Sarah T., a Caldwell resident who has chronic migraines. She frequently suffers temporary blindness or other visual distortions as a result of these migraines and her sensitivity to light renders her incapable of leaving her bedroom. They have left her afraid to drive, or even leave her home several days out of each week.

For many, the warning symptoms of constipation, mood changes (from depression to euphoria), food cravings, neck stiffness, increased urination, fluid retention and frequent yawning will appear 2 days before the onset of the migraine. Then your hands or side of the face will begin to go numb, or flashes of light will appear in front of the eyes.” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “The numbness spreads into the face and then the blind spots start appearing before the throbbing pain starts. Some people will even have difficulty speaking.”

Typically, chronic migraines and their debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. Like so many other migraine sufferers, Sarah was now often reliant on her husband to drive her around or take care of their daughters

while she lays in a darkened bedroom, often vomiting and praying that this episode will finish a little bit sooner than usual.

Sarah’s quest to find help over the years has brought her first to her family doctor, then gynecologist, neurologist, endocrinologist and a few other specialists. She has tried many different medications and therapies, each would bring a temporary relief that would last for some time, but then it would stop working and Sarah would be back to square one. Finally one day, a friend suggested she visits Dr Aleksandra, as she too used to suffer from migraines for years, but after several months of treatments with Dr. Aleksandra were now gone.

“A large number of our patients, mostly women, come to us suffering from chronic migraines just like Sarah.” “They’re in pain frequently and they just can’t live their lives the way they used to. Many of them have suffered for years and have exhausted every possible option. Despite this, we typically see huge improvements after 3-4 months of treatment. I feel like I have the opportunity to give these people their lives back.”

“I didn’t know anything about acupuncture when I first came in. I felt like I had tried everything else, and acupuncture was a total shot in the dark for me. When Dr. Aleksandra told me she could actually make my migraines almost disappear, I was totally skeptical, but she was right. After four months my migraines were down to only 1 or 2 a month instead of multiple times a week and they were much less intense. It’s difficult to describe how much better I feel, it’s like I’m finally in control of my life again.”

Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine specializes in acupuncture and it’s a core component of their programs for treating migraines. Their treatments aren’t limited to just acupuncture though, they also include traditional Chinese herbal formulas and a modern medical technology like ATP Bioresonance Therapy, a technology developed by NASA to speed up recovery. No two patients are exactly the same and no two treatment programs are exactly the same. By skillfully layering a multitude of therapies, Dr. Aleksandra is able to make a magnificent difference in her patients’ lives.

Brave the Shave for Cancer!

Did you know that before they turn 20, about 1 in 263 children in the U.S. will have cancer, and that worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes?

You can make a difference! Participate in the upcoming 17th Annual St Baldrick’s Head Shaving fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research, which is taking place at the Shillelagh Club. You don’t have to shave your head to participate—you can volunteer, be a barber, donate, root someone on, or just come and out and show your support.

This will be another great day of fun and philanthropy, with plenty of food, drink, music and a few more surprises. Attendees will Brave the Shave, donate, participate in a raffle/ silent auction, win prizes, and more.

As a shavee, you’re not only raising funds researchers depend on to cure childhood cancer—you’re also spreading awareness every time you show off your bald head. Your commitment to shave for the cause raises more than funds and awareness—it shows kids who lost their hair during treatment that you support them, and it brings hope to their families and friends.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and health lives. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s volunteers have reached new heights, making it possible for more than $338 million in research grant funding.

PSAT, SAT, and FASFA: What’s Changing for 2023-2024?

Big changes are coming in 20232024 for students getting ready to apply to college. wThe Fall 2023 PSAT and March 2024 SAT will be offered virtually, and the FASFA, will be released in December 2023, instead of in October.

Starting with the 2023 Fall PSAT, moving forward, the test will only be offered digitally, and in March 2024, this will happen with the SAT. The good news is that the test’s time length will shrink to two hours, and there will be more time per question. In addition, reading passage lengths will decrease, and calculators will be allowed for all the math.

Interestingly, the test will be adaptive, so as students move through the test answering correctly, the questions will get increasingly harder. One thing will stay the same—the SAT will still be scored on a scale of 400-1600 points.

“There is one big perk to the tests going digital—students will eventually receive their scores back more quickly,” says Stefanie Toye of Collegewise. com, which is offering a webinar on the changing PSAT on September 12, 2023.

As for the FASFA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a form that prospective college students and their families need to fill out yearly to be

considered for federal aid, the simplified form will go live in December 2023. The formula that determines who qualifies for aid, and for how much, is changing, and will impact families with more than one child in college. Jump in ASAP as the money is issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Even if you aren’t sure that you are eligible, you should still fill out the FAFSA,” says Frank Cherichello, a college planning specialist and owner of The Independent Guidance Office, collegesouce101@gmail.com. “You may be surprised to learn that you qualify for some aid.”

Expanded and Enhanced Services at Montclair Rejuvenation Center

Photos by Dan Epstein

Partners in life and business, Kelly DiStefano, MD and her husband, Ed Fritz, established Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona in 2017. The Center is a medical spa offering a full complement of services including Botox®, fillers, facials, waxing, laser hair removal, repairing uneven skin tones, treatment for migraines, hair restoration, vitamin drips, non-surgical body contouring and spray tans, to name a few.

Expanded and Enhanced Services at Montclair Rejuvenation Center

(continued from the previous page)

Dr. Kelly, as she is known at the center, is an Anesthesiologist. She learned from an early age the importance of improving one’s physical appearance and, by extension, emotional health. She became passionate about aesthetics and applied her medical expertise to help patients look and feel their best.

“Our goal has always been to bring affordable aesthetics to the community,” says Mr. Fritz, who serves as business manager of the various centers. “As we have grown, we have expanded our services to fit the needs of the community.”

As an example, Mr. Fritz says that Montclair Rejuvenation Center began as an injectable MedSpa and has evolved to become a leader in the State in laser hair removal. The Center boasts ranking in the top five in New Jersey for body contouring using CoolSculpting®, a non-surgical fat reduction method.

A course of treatment begins with an in-depth consultation to select appropriate products and medically proven instruments, with safety the utmost concern. The Montclair Rejuvenation Center offers the most advanced skin rejuvenation treatments available.

Mr. Fritz and Dr. DiStefano are diligent about keeping on top of, and in some cases ahead of, trends in the rejuvenation industry. “We are always willing to invest in our businesses,” he says. The success of the Montclair Rejuvenation Center, and the support of the local community, factored into expanding into West Caldwell in 2022. Later this year the Wellington Rejuvenation Center will open in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

In response to industry trends and inquiries from clients, the co-owners have added several new treatments and services. Mr. Fritz explains they are working on Montclair Concierge Medicine, a direct doctor-topatient program in which clients who enroll gain priority access to Dr. Kelly and same day service, among other considerations. The Center now offers a diet program that in three months has attracted about 240 patients. Mr. Fritz says receiving a weekly injectable administered by staff, or do-ityourself at home, has resulted in patients losing six to eight pounds each month.

“We also plan on adding a men’s and women’s health component that includes hormone therapy, medications for erectile dysfunction and treatments for other health concerns,”

says Mr. Fritz. The business manager is aware that other Medspa’s in the area have copied Montclair’s business model and pricing. He remains unfazed. “What they can’t copy is our staff, their attention to detail and the customer service they provide. Our biggest values, are Family, Quality of service and Community.”

Fritz is unabashed in his belief of giving back to the community. “We consistently participate in local fundraisers, Police and Fire benefits and School Fundraisers.” He notes that Dr. Kelly has mentored local students from local high schools, who plan to attend medical school.

Kitchen Renovation with Wine Room

Domus Kitchens, headquartered in Fairfield, recently created a beautiful renovation of a kitchen/wine room, built-in dining room cabinet, and bathroom vanity in a Livingston home. “The house that was built in the 1960s was modern, but the kitchen was outdated according to today’s standards,” states Vincenzo Tersigni, owner of Domus Kitchens.

His first step was to talk with the homeowners about their wants and needs to determine the desired functionality of the kitchen. Once Vincenzo established that the homeowners wanted a functional, open, and light space, he drew up plans to complement his design services and integrate the customers’ premium quality appliance choices.

“The homeowners knew what they wanted to accomplish. It was easy to meet their needs,” says Vincenzo.

Domus Kitchens designed a fully customized space using top-of-theline materials from Italy, including artisanal natural oak cabinets. With matching paneling, the custom cabinets were hand-finished, and using state-of-the-art technology, they open without having handles.

Vincenzo juxtaposed his design in the wine room with a glass wall, giving the area a nice, finished, and modern look. He then carried the look and feel to the other areas of the home.

PRE-RENOVATED KITCHEN

“Vincenzo listened carefully to our vision and offered thoughtful and cost-effective options,” says homeowner Abigail. “He worked directly with our designer using rendering software to help us visualize the updates to our kitchen in real-time.”

“We absolutely love the final result and are thrilled to use our new kitchen,” added Abigail.

SENIOR LIVING

Seniors Living Their Best Lives

Housing Communities for Many Levels of Care

The Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC) is focused on making life better for seniors at its four housing locations. Recently, one of these facilities, Lester Senior Housing in Whippany, which provides care for multiple stages of life including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and respite care, has undergone and is still undergoing a major renovation.

“We just completed the first phase of our renovations,” says Harold Colton-Max, the CEO of JCHC. “We've really opened things up which has added a lot of sunlight. Another significant improvement is our movie theater. It’s now a state-ofthe-art theater with comfortable seating.”

The dining room has been made more accessible, and now includes two seatings instead of just one. A cafe was also added and should be opening soon.

For seniors who want to stay active in both mind and body, Lester Senior

Housing offers a wide range of activities. “We bring in a number of people to lead classes on things like tai chi and chair yoga,” he says. “We have a new and improved physical fitness area, and we also redid the second floor of our independent living side so now residents can walk around an inside loop.”

The facility also brings in professors and lecturers from local colleges and universities to give interactive classes to residents as part of its JCHC University. “These might be current events of the Supreme Court, jazz music or other topics that interest our community.” There’s also a bus that provides transportation to supermarkets, malls, museums, and other local places.

Improvements have been made to its medical suite as well. “We have a physician who comes in on a regular basis, plus physical therapists, dieticians and other health-care professionals,” says Harold.

More changes are coming soon. “We're preparing for improvements to our courtyard area such as an outdoor dining feature, exercise stations, and areas with new furniture for socialization.”

Its entire staff works hard to cater to the needs of all of its residents. “These employees are compassionate, dedicated, professional and hardworking,” he says.

The Jewish Community Housing Corporation is a mission-based nonprofit organization. “Our senior communities are open to all, regardless of religion, but we're rooted in Jewish values,” says Harold. “Residents and family members can rest assured that we are more than just a landlord. We're dedicated to providing high-quality services and amenities for our seniors rather than focusing on increasing our profits.”

Tips for Midlife Women That Can Help Improve Their Sleep

Bryan Umiker, owner of The Ethical Mattress Company and a 20+ year veteran of the mattress industry, says sleep disturbances are extremely prevalent and a challenging problem for the midlife women visiting his store. “According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 60% of menopausal women report frequent bouts of insomnia and other sleep problems, such as sleep apnea, snoring, and restless leg syndrome,” Umiker states, adding that his female customers frequently share that the physical discomforts of menopause—like hot flashes and sweating—are having a negative impact on their sleep quality.

Umiker says that helping women facing these sleep challenges is something he’s learned to do over the last two decades in the sleep business. “It’s possible to dramatically improve your quality of sleep by paying close attention to your sleep environment and other controllable factors,” he says.

According to Umiker, airflow is vital in offsetting the impacts of hot flashes. “It’s critical we surround our bodies with breathable materials that allow for maximum airflow, as this facilitates the rapid dissipation of heat away from our bodies.” Umiker says this principle applies to your mattress, pillow, sheets, comforters, and sleepwear.

Starting with the bedding and sleepwear, “Knits are up to 5 times more breathable than woven fabrics,” he states. “In my experience, the best fabric for breathability is a 100% cotton jersey knit. After that would be a percale, which is better than a sateen weave because it has less density and better airflow

Moving on to the mattress and pillow, “Hybrid mattresses made with natural materials like cotton and wool are tremendously breathable and facilitate dramatically better airflow than the memory foam mattresses sold by most national brands.” Studies have found memory foam can add as much as 10 degrees to the micro-climate surrounding your body at night and that it’s essential to avoid both mattresses and pillows that utilize memory foam.

Umiker founded The Ethical Mattress Company to give area consumers an option that offers all-natural mattresses, transparent pricing, sustainable sourcing, and personalized service.

While working with customers in his Millburn store, he says listening closely as the customer describes their sleep challenges is essential. He credits this consultative approach for enabling him to advise customers on the right choice for a mattress, pillow, and other items and share simple tips for achieving a better night’s sleep.

Why It’s Important to Put Your Wishes in Writing

Most people have very definitive ideas about what they want as they age. For example, it’s common to hear, “I don’t want to go into a nursing home.” But many times, these preference are never put into writing. Therefore, it is so important not only to plan ahead, but to have these wishes made legally binding.

“Long-term care planning is generally a holistic approach to meeting the legal, financial and medical needs of an individual,” says Donald Dennison, an associate with Mandlebaum Barrett Law Firm whose expertise is in elder law. “The objective is to allow a person who may not yet be in their proverbial golden years to remain in the driver’s seat for as long as possible.”

He says even young people should have a plan in place. “Anyone who’s over the age of 18 should consider signing legal documents such as a power of attorney, a living will, and/or a last will and testament. These documents are really important so that there’s at least one or more people who can make healthcare decisions if there is a catastrophic accident.”

It’s hard for the average person to know what considerations to take into account when doing this type of planning, and most online legal services can’t know every person’s unique situation. This is why sitting down in person with a professional is critical.

“Most people delay this type of planning because they don’t like to think about getting older,” says Don. “But, aging can cause forgetfulness, memory loss, and the inability to communicate effectively, and without proper planning, people are left hoping that others are making the right decisions for them.”

Staying Physically Active is Important at Any Age

Even a regular routine of very limited physical activity can go a long way toward maintaining a person’s strength as they age. Aside from the fact that physical activity can help seniors prevent muscle atrophy, maintain better balance, promote better circulation, and generally prevent a host of other physical problems, regular physical activity has also been directly connected to slowing mental decline among seniors.

BALANCE EXERCISES help prevent falls, a common problem in older adults that can have serious consequences. Many lower-body strength exercises also will improve your balance. Balance exercises include:

Tai Chi—a “moving meditation” that involves shifting the body slowly, gently, and precisely, while breathing deeply; Standing on one foot; The heel-to-toe walk; Standing from a seated position.

ENDURANCE ACTIVITIES increase your breathing and heart rates. These activities help keep you healthy, improve your fitness, and help you perform the tasks you need to do every day. Activities that build endurance include: Brisk walking or jogging; Yard work (mowing, raking); Dancing; Swimming, water aerobics; Biking; Climbing stairs or hills; Playing tennis or basketball

STRENGTH EXERCISES help keep muscles strong and can help with your balance and prevent falls and fall-related injuries. You are less likely to fall when your leg and hip muscles are strong. Stretching can improve flexibility to make everyday activities easier. Strength exercises to consider: Carrying groceries; Gripping a tennis ball; Overhead arm curl; Arm curls; Wall push-ups; Using a resistance band.

Holistic Nutrition

Holistic nutrition is a philosophy that recognizes the intimate connection between body, mind, and spirit. This approach believes that what we eat not only impacts our physical well-being, but also our mental and emotional health. In a world of fast food and processed products, returning to whole, natural foods can be a healing balm for both the body and the psyche.

FOODS THAT NOURISH BOTH BODY AND MIND

• Superfoods like blueberries, walnuts, and spinach offer antioxidants that promote physical health and cognitive functions.

• Omega-3 rich foods, such as salmon and flaxseeds, are celebrated not just for their cardiovascular benefits, but also for their potential to alleviate depressive symptoms.

• Fermented foods like kimchi and yogurt introduce beneficial gut bacteria, which recent research suggests can influence mood and mental health.

In embracing holistic nutrition, we prioritize nourishment in its truest form. By choosing foods that honor both our bodies and minds, we step towards comprehensive wellness and a more harmonious existence.

Mindful Living in a Busy World

Techniques for Incorporating Mindfulness into Your Daily Life

In today’s bustling world, finding tranquility can seem elusive. Yet, it’s within this chaos that mindful living becomes vital. Mindfulness, or the act of being fully present in the moment, can act as an antidote to life’s incessant clamor. To weave it into the tapestry of our daily lives, start with these techniques:

• Micro-Meditations: Even a minute can count. Whenever overwhelmed, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and center your thoughts.

• Mindful Eating: Instead of rushing through meals, savor each bite. Relish the textures, flavors, and aromas.

• Digital Detox: Designate times to disconnect. Use these moments for reflection, reading, or simple pleasures.

• Observant Walking: Whether you’re walking to the office or park, focus on your steps, the rhythm of your breath, and the world around you.

Race to Promote TRAFFIC SAFETY

The 13th Annual STOP For Nikhil race will be kicking off in September. This event, hosted by the Nikhil Badlani Foundation, is named after an 11-year-old boy named Nikhil Badlani, who was killed in a car crash when a driver ran through a STOP sign. It is a race to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on the roadways and is the only race in NJ about traffic safety.

The race is a USATF certified 5K Run/3K Walk/5K Bike Ride. All proceeds from the event will go towards raising traffic safety awareness and nurturing the musical and academic talents in children.

Medals will be awarded to the top two non-school team captains who raise the most funds, and the school team that raises the most funds will be awarded a grant of $2K.

Common Threads

Over 25 years ago I wrote Diamond in the Rough (Penquin Publishing) which has sold over 1 million copies in over 30 languages and became a radio and tv program and recently an audio book on Audible. I decided to pick it up and read it after all this time. It featured interviews with brain surgeons, billionaires, athletes, entertainers, business leaders and more. I also conducted massive research with top scientists from such prestigious organizations as the Cornell University Department of Neurology and Neuroscience, the National Foundation for Brain Research, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the International Brain Research Organization.

Here are the Common Threads that still hold true today:

You won’t find any magical answers. There is no wizard to grant your wishes, no clearly demarcated yellow-brick road you can follow that will lead you and all others who walk along it directly to the land of Oz, to fame and fortune. Not one of the high achievers interviewed took the same path as any other. They did, however, have several traits in common:

They have healthy positive attitudes. They believe that the right attitude can often mean the difference between success and failure. They expect things to turn out well and have confidence in their own abilities to make that happen.

They take action. If high achievers desire a particular out-come, they will put everything they have into its realization. They don’t expect to be handed anything on a silver platter; they don’t even begin a project unless they know they’re willing to put in the effort it will take to make it successful. They work hard because they know that nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without effort.

They learn from failure and disappointment. They welcome problems as opportunities to use their creative energies, and they look upon even the largest of obstacles as challenges to be met and savored. They are not defeated by rejection. They get discouraged and depressed like everyone else, but they quickly bounce back and redouble their effort and resolve. No one wants to fail, but high achievers accept failure as a part of life, and know that there is a lesson to be learned in every setback.

They surround themselves with positive ideas and role models. High achievers are constantly looking to improve themselves. They never assume that just because they have reached a certain level of success, they can stop learning. They might not have a college education or even a high school diploma, but they place a high value on continuing their education. They study their craft, their industry, their skills, their hobbies. They read constantly, share ideas with others in their industry, and seek out mentors whose wisdom and experience can help them achieve their goals and desires.

They are passionate about what they do. It’s possible to become famous and/ or wealthy doing something you hate, but does that equal success? No one in this book thinks so. Asked “What is the secret to your success?” every person interviewed answered that they had found something they loved to do. Some people found their passion very early in life; others wandered around from here to there until they discovered their life’s work. But all of them eventually found vocations they truly loved. And because of that, all of them have gone through life with the enthusiasm and energy that passion produces. Once each person discovered his or her passion in life, it became like a magnet, drawing them inevitably closer to success.

They set goals. They focus on what they want to achieve, establish priorities, and know what they have to do in order to keep moving forward. Their plans are flexible enough to allow for the unexpected, but they always have a specific destination in mind. Goals provide them with purpose and allow them to wake up each morning energized and looking forward to the tasks they know must be accomplished that day.

They feel a joyful obligation to give back to others

They are grateful for what they have been able to achieve, and are happy to help others do the same. They know that by elevating someone else’s success, they elevate their own. They are competitive but not cutthroat. They have integrity and compassion and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to their profession, their community and their world. They agree with William H. Danforth who more than 100 years ago wrote in his inspirational book, I Dare You! “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life will come back to you.”
