Neuropathy Breakthrough Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results. “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down, anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward, and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.” This tragic story was shared with us by John M., a Millburn resident, who has Peripheral Neuropathy. And while no one was hurt in this accident, John M. had suffered almost every day for the past 8 years with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “The first stage is pain,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on broken glass. This pain eventually subsides, and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately, with the numbness comes a lot of other problems.”

This was the case with John. “I said I wasn’t going to drive again. What if that had been a pedestrian?” It is terribly common that Peripheral Neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around; even the simple pleasure of cruising down to the shore or taking her out to dinner was outside his capabilities. And even more common, John’s general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him medications that would ease the pain of his Neuropathy. That’s where Dr. Aleksandra and her staff at Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Mr. John,” says Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc. “They’re in constant pain from Neuropathy, and it prevents them from not only living their lives, but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden.”

Visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com to learn more and to take advantage of their New Patient Offer

“I can’t lie,” confides John. “I was skeptical at first. My doctor told me there was nothing that could be done, and then, there’s an acupuncturist right here in Montclair who tells me she can help. Turns out she was right. After about four months of treatments, I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car! It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly, I feel like I got my life back.” While Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine specializes in acupuncture, and it’s definitely part of their protocols in treating Neuropathy, the real secret is in a more modern medical solution called ATP Resonance Biotherapy™. “This technology was originally developed by NASA to expedite healing and recovery,” shares Tammy, a patient care coordinator at the clinic. “It’s like watering a plant. ATP Resonance Biotherapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provide them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” You can learn more about Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, call 973-444-8932 and do so quickly. Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine is a very intimate clinic and the staff takes pride in their ability to take their time with each patient, so they are very limited in their ability to take on new patients.

Valerie Testa Almquist of West Caldwell Publishes First Book

V

alerie Testa Almquist of West Caldwell has published a book called Look Back Move Forward, which she describes as an historical fiction adventure book for readers of all ages, which intertwines stories her parents shared growing up in Newark, NJ. The warm, feel good, hopeful story takes two brothers from the year 2000 back to 1939. Older readers will remember locales from that era, and younger readers will enjoy the boys’ adventures, while learning history. “My dad shared stories from his past with my children, who enjoyed hearing his tales,” says Valerie. “When he passed away, I wanted to share some of his stories. Honoring my dad in this way is rewarding. He appreciated everything he had, overcame obstacles, and worked hard.” A quote from the book states, “No matter how challenging one’s past, it’s there to learn from, gain strength and move forward.” The book is available on Amazon and in bookstores.

Cedar Grove Resident Natty Bumpercar Hosts Two Podcasts

N

atty Bumpercar of Cedar Grove is multi-talented. He hosts a weekly family-friendly podcast called Bumper Podcast, and another one called Hanging Out with Pig and Pals, which he created over the pandemic with his children. In addition, Natty works in the visual arts arena in areas like painting, illustration, animation, cartooning and sculpture, and does standup comedy, improv and voiceovers. He says he “considers himself a maker of things and a doer of stuff.” He loves doing his podcasts and says that his humorous improvised podcast characters excel at getting into awkward situations. He says each episode is self-encapsulated with an overarching theme for the series. The podcasts are available on Radio Free Montclair. He also supports the Cedar Grove Artist Alliance (CGAA), which fosters the art and culture in the area. He says CGAA was formed to be a beacon for a variety of artists in and around Cedar Grove and offers artists a venue for showcasing their talents.

Livingston Native to Publish Photography Book About Route 66

J

eff Sonnabend, who grew up in Livingston and is an IP lawyer and documentary photographer, is just about to publish a book called, The Route 66 Primer, which reveals current day America along Historic Route 66. He says he got into his sprinter van and shot the entire length of Route 66, which is around 2700 miles long. The book offers a collection of photos showing the housing situation, road conditions, landscapes, and people. He says, “The work was slow and tedious, but a picture of America does emerge. If people flip through the pages and see a glimpse of America, then I have succeeded.” This is not Jeff’s first book; he also published a book ofphotography called, Bowling the American Dream, which offers a glimpse into bowling alleys across the US. Jeff plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help him fund the publishing of his book.

avid Bronson of Caldwell’s daughters, Ava, 16, and Parker, 14, play on the New Jersey Dare Devils ice hockey team at Codey Arena, which is a team for people over age five with special needs. He says he has seen a real change in his daughters’ confidence since joining the team. One daughter, who only started to truly converse a couple of years ago, was afraid to get on the ice. Now she loves to work with the coaches, laughs every time she hits the puck into the goal even in warmups, and “is able to express herself out there.” His other daughter tells people, “I’m going to be in the NHL,” and lacks zero confidence. The team just held its annual golf outing fundraiser which was a huge success. David says he is thrilled to watch his girls play hockey and credits the coaches and volunteers for their patience and kindness.

ichael Laser of Montclair has written his seventh novel, Eulogy (published by Regal House). He previously published three novels for adults, three for young readers, and a children’s picture book. Eulogy tells the story of a man who learns, hours after delivering his father’s eulogy, that his unassuming, hard-working dad spent three years in prison. The son eventually uncovers the surprising story of his father’s heroism. Michael says he was inspired by a book about ordinary people who put themselves at risk to help others—and by the experience of giving a eulogy for his father. Although the fictional father is very different from his, he used many details from his father’s life in Eulogy, as a tribute. Michael has a reading/signing/celebration planned for Sept. 8 at 7 pm at Watchung Booksellers in Montclair. He’s available to visit book groups that read Eulogy, which is available on Amazon and in bookstores.

Livingston’s Sandwich Boys Support the Food Insecure By Jackie Schatell

E

leven boys going into grade eight at Heritage Middle School in Livingston, who call themselves “The Sandwich Boys,” have met 12 times since January 2021 to make sandwiches for the food insecure. It started out as a way to get together and stave off loneliness while safely masked outdoors during the pandemic and has continued as things have gone back to seminormal. Even though the boys have had Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and sports schedules to juggle, they have been able to continue to get together to make sandwiches and plan to continue to do so this fall. The Sandwich Boys include Seth Baskies, Nate Black, Korey Ellenbogen, Matthew Fleishman, Matthew Handler, Evan Hermann, Jack Klein, Sammy Kritzer, Ryan Laveman, Jake Wolin, and Alan Yaari. Moms Robyn Laveman and Gwen Hermann who helped the boys organize the endeavor, say they are “really proud of the boys” and that by the third time the boys got together, the boys didn’t really even need their help anymore because they had a good understanding of what needed to be done and ran a strong assembly line.

7 of the 11 Sandwich Boys: Jack Klein, Nate Black, Evan Hermann, Jake Wolin, Ryan Laveman, Matthew Fleishman, Matthew Handler

Ryan says, “It means a lot to help people who don’t have access to food all the time. I know that I am lucky to have everything that I have, and it feels good to help others who are not as fortunate and deserve to have a good meal.” “My favorite part of the project is hanging out with my friends and knowing I am helping others,” says Evan. In the beginning, the boys, who make about 50 sandwiches at a time, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which was switched up to cheese sandwiches in the latter get togethers. They package up the sandwiches with bags of chips, cookies, and a beverage. Nick Santinelli, a Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors volunteer, delivers the

sandwiches and any extra supplies to the homeless for the boys. The moms of the boys involved donate the supplies to the cause. Robyn and Gwen say that many of the boys including their sons Evan and Ryan have incorporated the sandwich making endeavors into their Bar Mitzvah service projects. In fact, they shared that some of the boys involved did so too. “It was nice to sit through many of the Bar Mitzvahs and hear the boys talk about their sandwich making,” they shared. “The boys really enjoy making the sandwiches and begin asking to get together to do so after a few weeks go by from the last sandwich making effort,” says Robyn. “It is nice to see how onboard they are with it and how selfsufficient they are,” says Gwen. “They have really taken ownership of it.”

The Montclair Foundation Supports the Local Community Through Grants By Jackie Schatell

V

an Vleck House & Gardens is much more than beautiful grounds and flowers – it also boasts The Montclair Foundation, which has a mission to support nonprofits that meet health, educational, cultural, social service, and quality of life needs in the greater Montclair community. The Foundation offers concerned citizens a way to assure the continuing vitality of Montclair and serves as a permanent conduit for charitable giving. In fact, the Foundation gives out $120K in grants each year to 10-15 nonprofits located in and around Montclair. Van Vleck House & Gardens originated as a 12-acre private estate more than 140 years ago when Joseph Van Vleck Sr. and his family moved to Montclair from Brooklyn in 1868. In 1993 the heirs of Howard Van Vleck gifted the house and grounds at 21 Van Vleck Street to The Montclair Foundation, which then moved its offices to Van Vleck House. It is now a center for nonprofit groups and is available to them for meetings, retreats, and fundraisers. The Van Vleck House & Gardens Management Committee was formed

to support and maintain the historic Van Vleck House and the stunning mature cultivated gardens on the Van Vleck estate. Visitors are able to enjoy all the garden spaces from dawn to dusk 365 days a year free of charge and are encouraged to participate in classes, concerts, and special events. In addition, The Foundation also offers free educational programs to children in kindergarten to grade one at the Ann Street School in Newark, and at Head Start at the Montclair Child Development Center. According to Anita Peterson, development director for the Montclair Foundation, the grants are awarded in two yearly cycles where any nonprofits with a 501(c)(3) tax designation can apply. A grants committee of board members and unpaid volunteers evaluates the applications and award the grants. “We get about 26 proposals a cycle and can only award grants to 10-15 of the organizations applying,” Anita explains. The awardees must use the funds for the purpose they described on their application, often for operating funds or specific programs. The next deadline to apply is September 12, 2022.

Anita Peterson

The Foundation uses the endowment and funds raised through gifts, bequests, and investment growth to fund the grants. During the pandemic, the Foundation raised an emergency fund of $106,000, which was fully awarded. “We welcome gifts to the Foundation— either directly or through trusts or bequests—and appreciate all those who support our tradition of giving,” says Anita. To apply for a grant, please go to montclairfoundation.org/grants. To donate, please go to montclairfoundation.org/donate.

Buyers Will Give Your Home a

STANDING OVATION By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

R

ealtors David Masor and Jim Chaconas with Keller Williams NJ Metro Group have devised a unique offering to put more money into sellers’ pockets. Instead of selling a home as is, HomeApplause will handle the entire process of updating and refreshing the home to achieve the best possible selling price. After living in the same house for a number of years, many homeowners know their homes may need a bit of a makeover prior to selling. The process of hiring and managing contractors to do these updates can be quite overwhelming. They also many not have the funds to invest in this much needed work. This is where HomeApplause comes in. With HomeApplause, this anxiety and inconvenience is taken away. Their amazing team handles it all—the design, project management, staging, and ultimately selling! Best of all, the cost of the updates are paid for after a successful close of sale.

What are the advantages of using HomeApplause instead of selling a house as is or hiring one’s own contractor and Realtor? Jim Chaconas: We will make the process very easy and smooth. We are going to take a lot off the homeowner’s plate, with the number one benefit being that the homeowner is going to profit more from the sale. David Masor: We manage the whole project, and we pay for all of the upfront costs. It is not an intimidating experience. We’re not knocking down walls or pulling permits… we’re doing simple stuff like pulling up old carpet, stripping old wallpaper, painting, and other projects to update the home. Ideally, in four weeks or less.

What is the process? DM: We provide a free consultation and show comparisons to help educate the homeowner. We design the scope of work, prioritizing the important areas that are going to have the most impact—such as kitchens and bathrooms. We plan the budget and manage the contractors.

(L-R) Jim Chaconas and David Masor

What makes your team qualified to handle every aspect of this process? JC & DM: We are licensed Realtors and have personally flipped and sold many investment properties. This inspired us to seek a way to help homeowners effectively flip their own home. That is really our intention, and why we have curated a team of experienced project managers, interior designers, and stagers. All ready to help the homeowner with the little details that matter the most to the buyers. HomeApplause’s expertise is in updating, refreshing, and selling homes with the ultimate goal of attracting buyers at the highest price possible.

JC: We are real estate agents first, we know what finishes buyers are looking for and what updates will bring the most value. DM: Once the home is ready, we market the property to get it sold quickly & for top dollar. We handle everything from beginning to end.

100 Years of Serving the Community Photos by Dan Epstein

R

and, Feuer & Klein LLC (RFK Insurance), a fourthgeneration insurance agency specializing in Personal and Commercial Insurance and Risk Management services, celebrates 100 years of serving the community. RFK Insurance is owned and operated by Dennis F. Klein CPCU, ARM “Denny,” third generation business owner. Joseph C. Klein AINS “Joey”, his son and fourth generation serves as Assistant Vice President. “We are very proud to be serving our community for 100 years and four generations,” says Denny, a top expert in risk management and insurance. “Joey and I are carrying the torch to bring four generations of excellence and professionalism, and a broad intellectual capability in personal and business insurance, as well as risk management.” “In a time where most insurance companies’ idea of customer service is a 1-800 number to a call center on the other side of the country, our team is proud to offer hands-on local customer service,” says Joey Klein. “Being a local Insurance professional isn’t about being there during normal business hours, it’s about being able to look a person in the eyes and tell them everything’s going to be OK when the unthinkable happens.”

Joey and Denny Klein

Through the leadership of Denny, RFK Insurance gives clients the benefit of his vast risk management knowledge. Denny spent nine years as the Risk Management Consultant for the New Jersey Highway and Turnpike Authority, where he also supervised all of the risk management for the building of the Driscoll Bridge. “Risk management is the science, insurance is the tool that we use to help our clients to preserve everything they’ve worked for,” says Denny. The Klein family first got its start in the insurance industry in 1922 when Joseph A. Klein, a civil engineer at the time, spoke up about how he was unhappy with the quality of service from the person who handled the insurance at the local building and loan. The person who then handled the insurance told Joseph, “Well if you think you can do a better job than you can do it.” And that is exactly what he did. “We’re in the Make-Sure business,” says Denny Klein. “Everything can change in a moment, and we’re here to hold your hand through the process when the unthinkable happens.” Whether you’re a small mom and pop store or a multi-milliondollar company, RFK Insurance’s clients can expect the same level of one-on-one customer service.

hen taxpayers filed their 2021 tax returns, there was a yes/no question on the first page of Form 1040 that read, “At any time in 2021, did you receive, sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of any financial interest in any virtual currency?” It may seem insignificant, but there are potential issues with whichever answer was given.

By checking “Yes,” the IRS knows to look for capital gain/loss transactions on Schedule D or for fee income on Schedule 1. If neither is reported, it can lead to questions from them. Conversely, if you checked “No,” but did have a qualifying transaction and didn’t report it, then the return was improperly filed. While it may seem innocuous, remember that you are signing the return under penalties of perjury, so you may want to reconsider any decision not to report a crypto currency transaction. It’s situations like the above that we deal with every day. Our team is well versed in the tax law and understand the ramifications for each item that goes into your tax return. Whippany Railway Museum Presents: ‘Morris & Essex Limited’

T

reat your Grandparents to a leisurely ride on the non-profit Whippany Railway Museum’s ‘Morris & Essex Limited’ excursion train. Sit back and relax during the 45-minute, 10-mile round trip ride through Morris and Essex Counties. The kids will enjoy a ride in one of their restored historic cabooses, as they experience the way railroaders traveled and worked every day for over 130 years, when virtually every freight train in North America was trailed by a caboose. Ride in style when you upgrade to one of their premium passenger cars. Choose from two outstanding cars: the award-winning Lackawanna Railroad Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’ that operated between Hoboken Terminal and Gladstone, NJ. The Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’ is a beautifullyrestored conveyance that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe Blue Comet passenger train of the 1930s. The Blue Comet ran between Jersey City and Atlantic City, NJ, and the striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space. Bring your camera—there is a large assortment of restored rail cars and locomotives at the Museum site in Whippany, along with historic railroad exhibits and operating model train layouts.

DANCE ON THE LAWN: Montclair’s Dance Festival

ance on the Lawn, Montclair’s outdoor dance festival, will return this year with live performances that include Nai-Ni Chen and Company, Maxine Steinman & Dancers, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts and more. Also included in this year’s program will be an original work by William Ervin, winner of Dance on the Lawn’s 2022 “Emerging Commissioned NJ Choreographer” award.

Dance on the Lawn, celebrating its ninth year, serves as a showcase and mentoring launchpad for NJ and NY’s finest choreographic talent. Founded by Montclair resident Charmaine Warren in 2014, Dance on the Lawn hopes to increase New Jersey’s exposure to dance by bringing professional and emerging companies, plus students of dance from around the state, together to perform in a community setting.

“We are so fortunate to again be able to feature Nai-Ni Chen and Company at Dance on the Lawn. We were lucky to have been colleagues with Nai-Ni, who tragically passed away in Hawaii this past December. Nai-Ni always said to us, ‘I am happy to help.’ We are so honored to have shared so many precious moments,” said Charmaine Warren, Founder/Artistic Director and Laura Marchese, Managing Director of Dance on the Lawn.

Sometimes It Starts with a Traffic Accident… Story and portrait by Dan Epstein

M

ontclair resident Lori Field always wanted to be an artist. As an only child, she says: “Art was my only companion.” After attending the State University of New York at Purchase, she moved to New York City and began to work as a textile designer. It was the lure of creating illustrations that led her to leave the job and become a free-lance illustrator. In a dramatic moment in 1996 when she was involved in a traffic accident she had an epiphany. She says there was a moment in the middle of it happening when she thought: “Please don’t let me die an illustrator.” Her Fine Art career began the very next day when she began to make collages. Enthusiastically, she began to show in galleries around New Jersey, which after the birth of her children had become her home. In 2001, she experienced one of those events about which many artists dream. Thinking she might curate an exhibit of other artists herself, she reached out to gallery owner Henry Boxer in London about the possibility of including one of his artists. In that conversation, he asked if she was an artist. Finding out that she was, he requested to see her work, and subsequently began to represent her internationally which led to her being widely exhibited in numerous prestigious galleries bumping her career into high gear.

Shadow of My Former Self

The Seven of Eyes Now, a little over 20 years later, Kathy Imlay has brought Field back home to Montclair with a significant solo exhibit at the Montclair Art Museum. In Shadow of My Former Self, 2022, a 15x21 pencil drawing on recycled ledger paper, we see in the first piece she completed after the passing of her husband Marty, a cardinal, often seen as messengers from beyond speaking to Field, the woman in white. Several of the pieces in the show are Field’s interpretation of Tarot cards. The Hierophant is one. In this 10.25 by 7.75 collage made in 2021, we again see Field, this time the female figure with the tiger head in a card which often stands for tradition and convention, and can also represent marriage. The Seven of Eyes, 2021, 52x37, is a mixed media woven Jacquard tapestry and it’s one of three tapestries in the exhibit. It represents the infant soothsayer with wisdom and insight. The tapestry is embellished with vintage embroideries, sequins, and hand painting. Field’s work is thought provoking in its way, and beautifully crafted. Make plans to view this striking body of work in an exhibit at the Montclair Art Museum starting September 10 and running until January 1, 2023. Please check the museum’s website for hours and admissions. Likewise you can view much more of her work at her website.

NEW ADDITIONS AT

CREATES A TOTAL BEAUTY AND WELLNESS DESTINATION By Jessica Modrow, photos by Dan Epstein

A

fixture on Mount Pleasant Ave in Livingston, Dieci Lifestyle Spa has garnered the attention of sophisticated clientele from near and far over the past 27 years. Dieci has a complete range of hair and make-up offerings, as well as a full-service spa situated in its 13,000-square-foot location, but owners Paul and Marie Gaglioti have way more up their sleeves coming this September.

Over the past few years, Dieci underwent a physical transformation with renovations throughout the entire space. The final touches on the spa included major new additions. “We have gone to the next level becoming a Medi-Spa and we have stepped up our wellness offerings,” states Marie. Included in these new wellness offerings is a luxurious new space in the Dieci spa that will make clients feel as if they’ve been transported to a Himalayan salt cavern where the Gaglioti’s have created a ‘Salt Lounge’ introducing ‘Halotherapy’ to their clients. Clients can bask in the glowing space which has Himalayan bricks backlit on all four walls. They can breathe in the tiny micro-particles of the dry salt which is diffused into the air. “The inhaled salt combats health conditions,” said Marie. “The majority of people who visit salt rooms on a regular basis find relief from a variety of respiratory and skin conditions; it helps recovery from cosmetic surgeries; and it’s a great way to cleanse the lungs. It is a truly remarkable wellness experience.” continued on the next page

The other major enhancements being offered at Dieci is a new Infrared Sauna. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat up the room, infrared heat raises the sauna-goer’s internal body temperature. “There are three wave-lengths—near, mid and far,” explained Marie. The longer a person stays in the sauna, they hit the next wavelength, ultimately activating the far wavelength. According to the infrared manufacturers’ research, time spent in the sauna can help with anti-aging properties, detoxification, boosts immunity, aids in weight loss and promotes relaxation. “This particular unit that we purchased has scientific, proven backing,” she added. “Starting in September, we are also partnering with a local plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul Figlia. We’ve known and worked with him for 30 years,” states Marie. “He’ll be providing high-end medicalgrade services such as fillers and Botox, and other non-invasive treatments.” Among the treatments Figlia brings to the table are Vivace, which combines micro needling with radio frequencies, and PHYSIQ, a non-invasive body treatment that tones targeted areas. Dr. Figlia, along with Marlene Habermann, the Spa Director at Dieci for more than 26 years, will work in

unison to bring the Medical, Wellness and Beauty arena’s together in harmony. Marlene has been overseeing, training, and developing spa services and treatments with a European grace and flair, attracting distinguished clientele from all over the state. The Gaglioti duo has a combined 60plus years in the beauty industry. Paul was a hairdresser and has practiced for 40 years. Meanwhile, Marie has a background in art and design and was a makeup artist for over 20 years. In 2003, she developed her own “clientfriendly” makeup and skincare line, Dieci Colori. “Dieci was a vision Paul and I had, and we brought it to life. We offer every type of hair and makeup service— specializing in hair coloring,” said Marie. Their son, Peter, has served as the Salon Manager, HR Director and overall staff and client liaison for the business for the past 15 years. “Our goal throughout the years has been to always stay ahead of the curve and really raise the bar,” said Marie.

Library Card Sign-Up Month A BACK-TO-SCHOOL ESSENTIAL

ry Public Libra ibrary L c i l b Pu

By Kimberly Blaker

W

hat’s the most essential school supply of all? “A library card,” says the American Library Association (ALA). September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The observation began in 1987 when U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett urged a national campaign for all kids to obtain and use a library card. Today’s libraries offer a broad array of free materials, services, and activities for kids and adults alike. Here are just a few great reasons to make the library an integral part of your and your child’s life.

MOVIES & FILMS

Today’s libraries offer a great selection of mainstream movies and television series as well as educational, independent, and foreign films on DVD for kids and adults alike.

MUSIC CDS

Music is the universal language. You’ll find a large selection of pop, rock, and country music CDs at the library. You can even introduce your kids to classical, jazz, blues, international music, and more.

BOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS AND EBOOKS

In addition to vast collections of print fiction, non-fiction, and reference books, libraries offer audiobooks on CD, including unabridged editions. Many libraries also provide ebooks in multiple formats.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE & GAMES

If your kids are into video games, the library has an array of children’s educational software and video games. You can also find teen and adult video games, instructional and reference software, and productivity software ranging from Microsoft programs to graphic design.

PERIODICALS

Newspapers, magazines, and niche periodicals are available for both in-library use and check out.

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN

If you can’t find a book or item you’re looking for, most libraries have inter-library and reciprocal loan programs. Just ask your library if it can request the material from another library for you. Some library systems also have arrangements so you can use your library card at libraries in nearby communities.

ONLINE CATALOG

Most libraries have a website with access to their complete catalog. You can browse or search for materials from home to determine their availability before you head out. If an item you want isn’t available, you can usually reserve it or request an inter-library loan right from your computer.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMPUTER & INTERNET USE

Nearly all libraries offer free computer access for Internet browsing and research. You’ll also likely have access to basic word processing programs, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.

A wide array of programs, events, and activities are found at libraries throughout the year. These may include children’s storytimes, computer classes, enrichment programs, book discussion groups, used-book sales, author events, children’s and teen movies, craft activities, and more.

Kimberly Blaker is a freelance writer. She also owns an online bookshop, Sage Rare & Collectible Books, specializing in out-of-print, scarce, signed, and first editions; fine bindings; ephemera and more at sagerarebooks.com

Paper Mill Playhouse Announces 2022-2023 Season

P

aper Mill Playhouse recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is proud to announce its 2022-2023 season, including a gripping murder mystery, a Disney hero of mythic proportions, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved final musical, the Tony-nominated story of two Latin music icons, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that defined a generation. “Paper Mill Playhouse has so much to offer audiences next season, from true stories and classic musicals to mysteries and myths,” said Mark S. Hoebee. Producing Artistic Director. “We’ll kick things off with the irresistible rhythms of the Miami Sound Machine in On Your Feet!, then get swept up in the romance and nostalgia of The Sound of Music to ring in the holidays. In 2023 we’ll continue our longstanding relationship with Disney Theatrical Productions with the mythical musical adventure of Hercules, followed by the suspenseful Murder on the Orient Express. We’ll close out the season alongside the bohemian artists of Jonathan Larson’s celebrated musical sensation, Rent. I suspect audiences will find it hard not to sing along this season!” Michael Stotts, Managing Director, commented, “We’re proud to be able to give these beautiful and exciting shows the productions they deserve on our recently named Marilyn and Monroe Markovitz Stage, which will receive plenty of technological improvements prior to the 2022-2023 season. And there’s even more beyond the stage with Paper Mill’s audience enhancement programs, including cast Q&As, Paper Mill Prologues and The Director’s Viewpoint.”

“Investors Bank is proud to sponsor the Broadway-caliber shows produced by Paper Mill Playhouse during the 2022-2023 season,” said Domenick Cama, Citizens Market President, New York City and New Jersey. “We are greatly committed to the arts and the impact they have in enriching our communities and appreciate supporting the theater’s education programs that inspire thousands of students each year to explore their talent, develop their goals and pursue their dreams.” Investors Bank is now a division of Citizens Bank, N.A. Paper Mill Playhouse’s 2022-2023 lineup features:

On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan (Oct 7 – Nov 6, 2022) An inspiring true story about achieving the American Dream.

The Sound of Music (Dec 2, 2022 – Jan 1, 2023) A triumphant story of family and love.

Service, Quality and Style at B&Z OPTICIANS By Christine S. Maxwell, photos by Dan Epstein

Ofer Steinberg

F

or more than 70 years, Block and Zuckerman Opticians (also known as B&Z Opticians) has provided the highest quality eyewear to the residents of Livingston, West Orange, Short Hills, South Orange, and surrounding communities. In 2014, Ofer Steinberg purchased the well-known business and has continued this tradition. While Steinberg has maintained the standards of excellence, he also added his own signature style. He has expanded the frame selection, which arrive almost weekly, to include many unique new lines with an emphasis on artistic frame design. However, Steinberg has also focused on having a balanced inventory that can meet every budget and taste. This includes Anne & Valentin, l.a. Eyeworks, Sabine Be, Gucci, Tom Ford, iGreen, Ray-Ban and many more.

In 2019, B&Z purchased the former Investors’ Savings Bank building, across the street from the old location, and renovated it extensively to reflect Steinberg’s sleek yet welcoming aesthetic. An optometric practice has been added to expand their services for the clientele. B&Z meets the needs of all their clients with more than 1,500 frames, a well-seasoned staff, and thorough knowledge of the ever-growing lens technology. They take great pride in their ability to meet the needs of customers with the most complicated prescriptions. Fittings begin with a thorough discussion of the prescription, the customer’s needs, and any unique applications such as computer use, sports, hobbies, and profession. All aspects of lens design and recommendations are discussed. Working with that information, frame selection begins with great care to assure it’s well-fitting and suitable for the prescription. Eyewear makes quite a statement about a client’s personality. Whether subtle, bold, or somewhere in between, the final product has to meet all these criteria while maintaining state-of-the-art optics. Unlike large optical chains, B&Z creates a warm, friendly atmosphere. They develop relationships with their clients, as demonstrated by the multiple generations of families they are proud to serve. They look forward to “seeing” you soon!

The Silverstrom Group While the high-tech office of the family-run Silverstrom Group may speak for itself, the full-service practice takes the utmost pride in being what Dr. Gary Silverstrom describes as a “high-touch” team of well-trained, wellappointed specialists, started by his father, David, 45 years ago. “It’s not just one person’s opinion, it’s an entire team’s opinion—it’s 10 people coming together to develop the best possible plan for every single patient who walks through the door,” he says.

SPECIALTIES

“It’s unique because we can accomplish things faster, with the finest material, and it’s all done in-house, so we can control the final product.” It’s a fine-tuned formula that Dr. Silverstrom also contends makes it much easier on the patient, overall, regardless of their smile objectives. “The goal is that we want to do the right thing for the patient - always. It’s a relationship, and we would much rather have a long-term relationship with a patient than just fix a tooth quickly.”

One of these is Integral Sound Therapy. A variety of sacred instruments are played during a session, which can be private or group, designed to create vibrations in the body. “Our bodies are primarily water,” said Zornitzer, “and water is a great conductor of vibrations.” These vibrations can trigger the relaxation response, help reduce blood pressure, symptoms of chronic stress and insomnia, as well as release and reharmonize mind, body and spirit, she said. Results are often impressive. “Dissonance in the body causes ‘dis-ease,’” Zornitzer noted. She will sometimes combine sound therapy with another energy modality, such as Reiki. “All ages can benefit from these therapies, which can help anyone to find serenity, to focus, and to avoid ‘dis-ease,’” she added.

The office’s managing broker, Jerry Jacob, and Bonita Areman, sales, and listing broker, had the opportunity to participate in the event. The CASA of Essex County Golf Outing is an annual fundraising event that supports the nonprofit’s mission to help change a child’s story and make a difference in the lives of foster children who live in the area. CASA of Essex trains and empowers volunteers to help make independent and informed recommendations to assist the courts, schools, and the community to decide what is best for the child. This year’s event took place at the Cedar Hill Country Club and honored the 200 CASA volunteers who speak up for the best interests of these children. In addition to their attending the outing, Jacob and Areman offered a generous donation of $1,000 on behalf of the Coldwell Banker Realty CARES Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Coldwell Banker Realty in New Jersey and Rockland County, New York. “CASA of Essex County is an incredible organization making such a positive impact in the local community,” said Jerry Jacob. “It’s an honor to have been a part of this year’s golf outing and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone who came together to support CASA’s important mission.”

Back to the BASICS.

Barry Farber

By Barry Farber

I

’d like to share some thoughts on proper posture and breathing techniques we could all use. During a family get together I was watching my niece’s sister-in-law patiently feeding and working with their kids who are both 2 years old. They were sitting on chairs without backs and their posture was perfect. Totally natural without any effort. It seems to all go downhill when they start school and end up sitting and slowly slouching in an unnatural position for most of the day. We underestimate how critical the right posture is for a lifetime of benefits.

O’Connor said in a previous column; “breathe like a baby. If you watch a baby breathe its belly goes in and out naturally.” Starting to have better posture and breathing correctly takes time and effort since we have been doing it wrong for so long. The goal is to do it without thinking. Whenever we start a new skill or action, I like to use these four stages as an example of how we learn. So be patient. It takes a while to do this unconsciously.

Proper breathing is also an important part of life we forget to do in the correct way. A true Martial Arts master, Taisen Deshimaru, born in Japan of an old samurai family was asked: What is the most important thing of all in the martial arts? His answer… “Breathing. And breathing does not come until posture is right.”

• Second we become “Consciously Incompetent.” Maybe reading this column makes you aware of your posture and breathing and you are now conscious of what you’re doing wrong.

Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback to maintain the best posture. This will allow you to breathe naturally and get in a centered state. Here’s a short tip on breathing and posture from Breathwork Training Expert, Patricia Coester: –Sit with a straight spine –Inhale through the nose and exhale long through the mouth (Inhale 3 secconds, exhale 6 seconds) –Exhale while you let go all your thoughts -as well as your worries. Do this and just concentrate on your breathing in and out and eventually there will be no thought. Breathing calms, you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration and ultimately reduces stress. As Sensei Greg

• First we are “Unconsciously Incompetent.” We are not aware of what to do and how we are doing it wrong.

• Third we become “Consciously Competent.” We are now aware and making the correction. • Forth and most important is to become “Unconsciously Competent.” We now have the correct posture and we are breathing naturally without thought, but only after extensive time and effort does this happen. This method has been useful for so many skill areas ranging from learning a new instrument to mastering martial arts (which by the way will never happen since there’s always room for improvement). So, the next time you feel stress, or you’re in an argument, or about to do something under a lot of pressure…try breathing. And when it comes to the right posture—take it from John Gallucci, Jr., ATC, PT, DPT, CEO and President of JAG-ONE Physical Therapy—good posture, or neutral spine helps decrease stresses to our muscles and joints which minimizes pain and the risks of Injury. So, sit up straight!!
