Book on 1879 National News West Orange Crime is Published

P

eter Wosh, who lived in West Orange for 35 years, before recently moving to Virginia, has written a book with his late wife, Patricia L. Schall, based on a crime that happened in West Orange in 1879. It is called, “Murder on the Mountain: Crime, Passion, and Punishment in Gilded Age New Jersey.” The story made national news. The book is available in local bookstores and on Amazon. Peter Wosh Peter says he wrote the story because it happened on land near where he resided. The story is about Magaret Meierhoffer, the last woman executed in NJ when she was hung in Newark in 1881. When Margaret’s husband John returned from the Civil War, he was a changed man, neglecting his work and beating his wife. One day, in 1879, John turned up dead with a bullet in the back of his head. Margaret and her farmhand, Dutch immigrant, Frank Lammens, were accused of the crime, and both went to the gallows. Margaret maintained her innocence the whole time.

West Caldwell Resident “Fools” Penn & Teller

D

To prepare, David worked with two other magicians to fine tune his trick. He auditioned early in 2021, and the show taped in June of that year. David says it was hard keeping the outcome to himself for so long.

It was quite a feat! According to David, only about 10% of people are able to fool Penn & Teller. “I am on cloud nine,” says David. “It has been a truly amazing experience.”

“I love being a magician,” says David, who performs off Broadway, at clubs in NYC, and at private events. To watch the segment, and see a listing of David’s upcoming shows, go to davidcorsaro.com.

avid Corsaro, of West Caldwell, who has been a magician for 30 years, recently “fooled” Penn & Teller on the TV show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.” He won the prestigious “Fool Us” trophy and will get to open for Penn & Teller one night this summer.

Livingston Resident Publishes His First Novel

M

atteo Lahm of Livingston has written his first book titled “Finding a Light in a Room with No Walls.” The book takes readers on an “evocative and colorful journey through modern-day Italy and tells the tale of one man’s tragic and comedic search for the meaning of life, filled with profound experiences of pain, regret, forgiveness, love, loss, family, and hope.” The title references a dream sequence the protagonist faces throughout the book. Matteo says he wrote a story of a staunch atheist forced to grapple with a near death experience to resolve the conundrum of belief and meaninglessness. “So many people are trying to find significance in the world who need an alternative to blind faith or believing in nothing—this book is for them.” Matteo, a painter and musician, says writing the book was “creatively and emotionally the hardest thing I have ever done.” The book is available on Amazon in paperback, eBook and audiobook.

High School Senior Runs Her Own Fashion Line

L

ivingston High School senior Chloe Panes is running her own personalized apparel business, called Washedup Apparel. A large part of her business is making items with collegiate logos during commitment season for bed parties. She sells her clothes individually, to stores across the US, trunk shows, pop ups, and trains at parties. Chloe, who is self-taught, says she spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos to learn how to tie-dye, use the heat press, bedazzle and do embroidery. All of her items are made to order. She says she is not limited to clothing as she also decorates socks, phone key chains, scrunchies, hats and more. Chloe, who used her own money to start her business, says she has always been crafty, but she didn’t realize how crafty she was until she found her love of fashion designing. It is her dream to open a highend loungewear factory. “I love being my own boss,” she says. April 2022

“1774 Sandwich Initiative” at Newark Academy Gives Back to the Homeless By Jackie Schatell

F

reshman Leon Sarkissian has started the 1774 Sandwich Initiative at Newark Academy, in Livingston, where each month, Upper School students are making sandwiches for St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, which feeds the homeless. “I heard someone at my church say they needed more sandwiches at St. John’s,” says Leon. “It seemed like something I could take on that would make a big difference in fighting food insecurity one sandwich at a time.” Leon says, “This is truly an important cause which is unfolding in our own backyard. We need at our level to make a difference and help each other.” Those in need go to St. John’s for hot meals, and then get a paper bag with the sandwiches to take with them for the two other meals of the day, and for the elderly or children in their households who could not come.

“This is truly an important cause which is unfolding in our own backyard. We need at our level to make a difference and help each other.” —Leon Sarkissian Leon’s family has been involved in assisting the homeless in NYC and then in NJ since coming to the US in 2003. “Our parents always made sure to that we participated actively in one way or another,” he says. “We have made beds, cooked, cleaned, organized toiletries, played games with children and done many sleepovers as the welcoming centers require two organizers to be present.” Leon says he joined the homeless cause in 2012. “Our parents taught us that we could not imagine living a full spiritual life without first thinking of others,” he says. “Nowadays because of Covid-19, we bring food, gift cards and warmth to the homeless who are fortunately housed in hotels, motels, and temporary housing.” “Aside from a profound sense of humility, one lesson my older siblings and I learned is that the homeless line in America is a very very fine one,” he says.

Leon Sarkissian The launch of the 1774 Sandwich Initiative was on MLK Day where the school officials and Leon coordinated a Zoom call where the Newark Academy students realized the first 967 sandwiches. They have since organized two more sandwichdrives, which resulted in 2,200 sandwiches in total. This has surpassed Leon’s expectation by 24 percent. The project is ongoing, and the next target date is set for April 30, which is Newark Academy’s Annual Day of Giving. Leon, who says he has many plans for the future of the drive, has started asking for the help of everyone around him, even from some celebrities. He has also set a new and more ambitious target of 17,740 sandwiches to be made by the end of his Senior year.

Mom Turns Tragedy into Way to Help Others By Jackie Schatell

R

ecently, Shilpa Kulkarni and her husband Vishwas Kulkarni, of Livingston, established Shiv’s Third Eye Foundation in memory of their son Shiv, who lost his life to suicide in 2021, with a goal of building resilience in adolescents against mental health issues through education, awareness, good mental hygiene, and the sponsoring of research on the diagnosis and treatment of adolescent depression. It will operate under the umbrella of Livingston’s Healthy Community, Health Youth (HCHY) initiatives. According to the Kulkarnis, the name, Shiv’s Third Eye, was chosen “because the third eye signifies enlightenment and an ability to look into the heart of others.” Through the Foundation, they hope to drive out the myths and stigma and bring in awareness, education, support, and hope. The Kulkarnis said they are hoping to “turn our tragedy into helping others.” “Everyone has a different way of grieving and we wanted to provide open and clear communication regarding what happened so we can help others,” they added. In September, Shilpa spoke on suicide prevention and awareness at a Livingston High School Board of Education meeting and has since held informative talks through Sanskriti of New Jersey including, “Raising Resilient Teenagers, by sptsusa.org, and “Breaking the Silence” regarding LGBTQ+ identities by a South Asian parents group called Desi Rainbow Parents. She also partnered with the group in December to host a Facebook Live session called, “Shiv’s Story.” In addition, Shilpa and her family participated in an Out of Darkness Walk at Verona Park, and she held a small panel discussion in Short Hills with a psychologist. In March, as the first Foundation event, a youth-led panel discussion was held as part of a Youth Symposium with Columbia University, Climate School. Shiv’s sister and friends were the panelists.

The Kulkarnis have also established a Facebook group called, Shiv’s Third Eye, where parents can feel safe to talk about issues their children are facing. Therapists are also members and offer support. The Kulkarnis said they are pleased with the group and the “open candid conversations happening there.” The Kulkarnis also have plans for future talks, workshops, and panels and hopes to start some town-wide teen and parent groups that will be based around the issues of assimilating within Livingston’s diverse population. “We hope the foundation and Facebook page help other parents and kids,” said the Kulkarnis. “We wish we had this type of support for our son.” “We can see through the chatter on the Facebook page, that the need for the services Shiv’s Third Eye Foundation will provide are much needed in the community,” they said.

Swap Out Your Top with No Stress Or Headaches By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein

I

n nice weather, what is more fun than driving around with the top down and feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair? This is why many people love Jeep Wranglers. Owners can put down the soft top and enjoy the great outdoors, but when it gets cold, they also have a hard top that will keep them warm and dry. But, swapping the tops and figuring out where to store the one that is not in use is not fun at all. Friends and partners, Michael Schwartz, Scott Pyper and Lenny Blue, developed a solution to these problems and opened Swap Your Top in Livingston, which just celebrated its one year anniversary. “I actually own a Jeep Wrangler and Lenny and Scott would help me change out the top every season,” says Michael. “It was a hassle. The process requires a helper and you have to be somewhat mechanically inclined. You also need a place to store it. Even if you have a garage, it takes up a lot of space and can get damaged.” When Jeep owners make an appointment with Swap Your Top, they get their tops changed in a timely manner, and also know that the top they are leaving behind will be placed on custom made racks in a climate controlled facility. “You leave with no headaches and no stress,” he says.

ON BLOOM: Fashionable, Friendly and Fun Both On Bloom owners have a deep history in the fashion and beauty industries. About 10 years ago, Cifelli owned “Wish,” a boutique on Bloomfield Avenue. She relocated her business inside of Dieci Salon in Livingston, where she was also a stylist. The business continued to flourish, and a client introduced her to Sorenson, who had over 20 years in the fashion industry. Sorenson worked on the wholesale side of fashion in New York City at Liz Claiborne and August Accessories.

After a few years of working together, the pair decided to open their own boutique in 2019. They wanted to be closer to their communities–Sorenson lives in Essex Fells and Cifelli lives in North Caldwell–and shortly into their search, the perfect location opened up in Caldwell. The boutique features a range of womens’ and juniors’ collections for all ages and lifestyles–including a wide variety of denim; dresses; blazers; leather and more. They also have loungewear and trendy PJs; jewelry; candles; and fashion accessories. “We work very closely with our customers to offer them a personalized shopping experience,” said Sorenson. “Our small, welcoming environment allows a high level of client service.” Sorenson and Cifelli host in-store events and take their show on the road to nearby venues and homes for pop-up parties. “We have ladies nights, sip and shop events, and giveaways,” said Cifelli. “We thrive on creating a memorable experience for our clients.” On Bloom also supports local businesses and charitable organizations. Soon, On Bloom will be offering a closet consultation service, where they assist clients in completing and enhancing their wardrobes. “I am passionate about dressing women to make them feel confident and look beautiful.

s the owner of the popular South Orange boutique Sadie’s, Catherine Fisher was an experienced merchant when she bought Kitchen a la Mode, in 2018. During that time, she brought her focus on ethically produced goods with her. She wasn’t well-versed in cookware, but quickly got up to speed, and added many American-made products, along with items such as eco-friendly zip-lock bags, and beeswax food wrap. Owning her own businesses, she states, has freed her from situations in which women are still being passed over for promotions by less-qualified men. She receives networking support from other local women-owned businesses. Fisher also has been able to provide internships for students from nearby Seton Hall who “have gone to big, bright careers,” Fisher said. Her advice to budding women entrepreneurs: “Don’t be afraid to try. Failure only matters if you don’t try again.”

Building Homeowners’ Dreams

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Gargiulo Builders thrives on quality, communication

By Cynthia Burns

By Janis Hashe

teven Poto, owner of Team SportsTurf Professional Lawn Care and Landscaping, uses computer imaging to provide residential and commercial business owners with a precise depiction of the plantings they have chosen. Whether installing new landscaping or upgrading an existing border, bed or yard, this “what you see is what you get” approach provides an accurate schematic of a completed project before work begins.

Since 1965, Gargiulo Builders has renovated homes, built additions and decks, and remodeled kitchens and bathrooms for homeowners in East Hanover Township and beyond. With strong background in construction engineering, as well as building, the company has built lasting relationships with architects, managing and constructing projects from their plans, said Owner/Operator Steve Gargiulo. “The number-one reason the company has prospered for so long is the quality of the product,” he said. “Number two is communication.” When a homeowner contacts Gargiulo Builders, a first appointment includes a walk-though, plus budget discussion. Gargiulo then returns with members of his team to walk through again and clarify any questions. A final proposal is discussed in person. “It’s the personal interaction that gets us the jobs,” he said. Gargiulo said they continue to honor their motto: “No job is too big or too small.” The company is now booking jobs for summer 2022.

“I take a picture of the site and prepare a full-color print of how it will look with new plantings,” explains Poto. He offers guidance on what will thrive based on the soil condition and sun exposure. Poto refers to the color print as a “work in progress” that allows the design to be tailored to the client’s needs and preferences.

The Grass is Always Greener...

When the Experts Are on Your Side of the Fence By Sue Baldani

A

beautiful lawn adds curb appeal to any home and business. But, keeping it healthy and lush takes a lot of time and knowledge. “All lawns should be getting a fertilization program throughout the season, including a full aeration and seeding that will promote better drainage so fertilizer will be better able to get into the roots,” says Kevin Macken of K. Macken Landscaping, which has been named the Best of Essex five years in a row. He adds that regular cutting is also critical. “It helps us keep an eye on our customers’ properties to make sure they're healthy, that there are no grubs, chinch bugs or fungus taking over the lawn and causing it to die off.” “Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out the right height to cut the grass or the correct products to use, which is why it’s important to have professionals take care of your lawn,” states Macken.

From post lanterns and spotlights, to recessed cans and decorative walkway and deck lighting, they can brighten your night. In addition to the extra safety of well-lit walkways and secure entryways, a properly designed lighting system creates visual interest and amplifies the curb appeal. The features of the landscape can be illuminated, calling attention to the details that would otherwise be overlooked.

Will Your Generator Work?

T

he convenience and comfort of owning a generator during a power outage cannot be understated. The fact of the matter is that much of the power grid across the country is aging and obsolete. Power outages become more likely during a storm, and you lose your heating system, refrigerated goods, lights, and all of your appliances. A generator will get you through it. But generators are emergency systems. They’re probably going to lie dormant for most of the year, but when they’re needed they have to work. The very last thing you want to happen is to have a power outage occur, only to realize that you have a problem that’s preventing the generator from working properly. Generators can and do develop problems over time, even when they’re not in use. Chances are you’re not going to notice a problem with the system if it develops while you’re not using it. So, the best way to catch problems before they cause a disaster is to schedule regular generator maintenance. Anderson Electric offers yearly maintenance programs for permanent natural gas Generac generators. You get routine services with scheduled generator maintenance, including:

• valve adjustment • battery test • checking of run, exercise and event log • cleaning and testing unit operation The ideal time frame for generator maintenance is every 100 hours of running time or once a year, whichever comes first, and is included in our scheduled maintenance. A Full Range of Customer Satisfaction Reno’s Appliance Offers Knowledge and Innovation By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

W

e pride ourselves on making appliance shopping the least stressful part of the renovation process,” states Reno’s Appliance President and CEO, John Cioletti. The business was founded in 1951 as ‘Reno’s Radio & TV Shop.’ Shortly thereafter, the need for high-end, built-in appliances was apparent, and the family-owned business “opted to survive and excel,” says Cioletti. Today, Reno’s Appliance carries all major brands—with price points suited for all customers. When a customer comes in, they deal with a highly experienced sales staff. “We’re very fortunate that our sales team basically never leaves,” said Cioletti. “My general manager has been with me for 27 years.” The rest of the Reno’s Appliance team has been with the business between three and 25 years. When a salesperson starts at Reno’s. they shadow experienced team members to familiarize themselves with the features and benefits of the appliances. Training is updated with vendors, online, and through onlocation immersion training provided by manufacturers. Reno’s also has an on-staff corporate chef who available for product demonstrations, and as an additional resource.

John Cioletti and Cora

“We also pride ourselves on listening,” said Cioletti. “When a client comes in, we inquire about their wants and needs, and then help determine what brands and appliances are best for their design, their lifestyle, and their budget.” The world of appliances is a rapidly changing one, and potential customers will find that Reno’s is keeping up with new products. Latest innovations, said Cioletti, include steam and WiFi connectivity. Several manufacturers are now offering steam and steam-assisted ovens. “The addition of steam for laundry has also increased in popularity for not only washers and dryers, but with the addition of freestanding cabinet steamers for the

home,” he explained. WiFi connectivity through manufacturers’ apps helps with ease of use and remote diagnostics. Reno’s Appliance customers can continue to rely on the most up-to-date products and information, combined with more than a half-century’s commitment to customer service and satisfaction.

Building Your Dreams Since 1965

Going Outside the Boundaries of Your Home By Susan Baldani

W

ith people spending more time at home now than ever before, the desire to expand one’s living spaces is in high demand. Homeowners want to create an oasis for themselves and their families not only inside their homes, but outside as well. Andrew Braverman, a builder with over 18 years of experience in the state of NJ and president of KMF Companies, a boutique luxury builder, has seen a heightened interest in pools and patios. “One of the things we are finding is that people are putting more of an investment into their homes,” he says. “Because they’re spending more time there, they want to enjoy the various aspects of it, and want to get as much year-round use as possible.”

For luxury patio areas, almost all are being done with blue stone, and have at least one fire pit and a covered area. Outdoor lounges, with a kitchen and bar featuring multiple televisions, are also highly sought after. For luxury pools, the most popular are Hampton-style rectangular pools with sun shelves and automatic covers, which keep warmth in and also add an element of safety. While doing a project, KMF is with you from the very beginning to the amazing end. “What we have found is unique in this area, in terms of luxury lifestyle living, is that a lot of the onus will fall on a homeowner to help manage their vision,” says Andrew.

Specializing in Victorian restoration, Gikas understands period homes. Gikas has a team of roofers, painters and carpenters that work together on projects. When you book your exterior painting with them you do not have to hire additional carpenters to replace any damaged wood or to add decorative components. Gikas’ skilled carpenters are experienced in wood repair. They can handle facia, soffit, gutters and leaders, roof and window repair as well as repairing or replacing porches and railings. They try to salvage and reuse vintage pieces whenever possible. One of Gikas’ customers best described working with owner, George Mihalis, “Our “armadillo” neutral beige house is now a gorgeous Victorian with the elegance and richness of its original design. We hired George because he was the only contractor to point out the tiniest details that were there—details we hadn’t even noticed. He is a true expert in his field and the style of the homes in this town. Gikas staff are artists that treat painting your home as a process in creating a work of art.”

A Renovating Project with a Goal to Make the

OLD LOOK NEW and the NEW TO LOOK OLD

T

aking that extra step when it comes to customer service is something building contractor Victor Zucchi & Son has been doing for 85 years. “My father and my grandfather believed in providing next-level customer service,” says Chris Zucchi, who represents the builder’s fourth generation. The contractor is currently working on a $2.5 to $3-plus million construction project in Englewood—adding an 11,000 sq. ft. addition to a 4,000 sq. ft home. “We take customer service very seriously,” Zucchi emphasizes. “During 2021 we saw significant material price increases and construction material delays.” Yet, to the delight of the client, the project has remained on schedule. “This is why pre-construction services— which include sourcing materials, pricing materials, and scheduling material delivery to coincide with the production schedule—take on new urgency as 2022 gets underway,” he adds.

38

Suburban Essex

Victor Zucchi & Son’s Englewood project also came with another big challenge: The client wanted the addition to match the original home. To do so, Victor Zucchi & Son went to a reclaimed brick company in Iowa to source and secure a particular type of 19th century brick—a clinker brick—for the home’s façade…and the match was made. Work is proceeding on the interior of the home for which the homeowner also wants a match between the new structure and the original, down to the moldings and woodwork. “The client wants the old to look new and the new to look old,” Zucchi states. “It is a challenge, but it is also fun for us.”

Passion that makes hard work fun may set Victor Zucchi & Son apart from the rest, but it is truly customer service that makes this building contractor stand out. “We do go about our business differently than most contractors,” says Zucchi. “We keep our clients in the loop throughout the project to ensure everyone’s needs are met and questions and concerns are addressed.”

The client has been so pleased with Victor Zucchi & Son’s attention to detail and craftsmanship that they have added on projects that include a porte-cochère, a proposed wine cellar, a new pool house and pool renovation, and other items to the initial project.

Victor Zucchi & Son

April 2022

More than that, clients can contact the building contractor 24/7. “I give my clients my cell number so they can reach me at any time.” That is what you call next-level customer service.

Like any work of art, landscape, and garden design boils down to color, texture, scale, and composition. Joseph Mulroe Landscape Design uses a balance of these elements to create satisfaction for clients that lasts decades.

In addition, their warranty is one of the best in the industry. All plant material is guaranteed for two years postinstallation. The team at Joseph Mulroe Landscape Design stands by their work and want customers to feel safe knowing their investment is protected.

It’s Spring Maintenance Time for Your HVAC System

S

emi-annual maintenance by a certified HVAC technician protects your system by finding and fixing minor problems before they become costly repairs, and preps your air conditioning unit for peak performance and greater efficiency. Technicians should: check refrigerant lines for damage, measure refrigerant charge; change the air filters; clean the condenser coil, check suction line’s condition; clear vegetation or trash to enhance air flow; and clear out the drain system to avoid water damage, mold growth, or bacteria buildup. After your preseason maintenance is done, homeowners should perform these easy DIY tasks (turn off power first): Vacuum metal frame air filters monthly—soak clogged filters in a 50/50 water/vinegar mixture; clean out debris in condenser fins; hose down the external unit to clear dirt buildup; and cut back plants that block it. If you are considering an air conditioning upgrade, we have Carrier units in stock so you can avoid lengthy equipment back orders and price hikes. We offer flexible financing and installation discounts. Visit www.bloomfieldcooling.com for details on specials and our Comfort Club maintenance programs.

Countertop Choices

Q

uartz countertops have become increasingly popular over the past several years but many people still don’t understand the difference between quartz and granite, quartzite or marble. Quartz countertops are a man-made material that consists of anywhere from 90% to 95% natural quartz and other stone with the rest being made up of resins and additives to create the desired color and pattern. Granite, quartzite, and marble are all natural stones that are mined from the earth and cut into manageable slabs. While many homeowners love the beauty of natural stone the minimal care and maintenance of quartz, as well as the ever-growing array of colors and patterns, many of which mimic natural stone, has made quartz countertops an undeniable favorite among homeowners. Whether you choose quartz or quartzite for your countertops it all comes down to personal preference. The designers at Showcase can help guide you through every step of the remodeling process, including choosing the right countertops for your lifestyle.

SUMMER CAMP TIPS From the Camps Directors Themselves!

“Theatre Camp provides kids with skills that they can use in the future in all aspects of their life. A class on how to audition not only helps to prepare students for a professional audition but also trains them how to best present themselves in an interview or when delivering a speech. Comedy/Improvisation classes help develop quick thinking skills. Theatre for Life is our motto, because we truly believe that musical theatre training can not only enhance, but change the course of someone’s life.” —Randy Elman, Artist Director, Musical Theatre Conservatory

“If you come with a friend, open yourselves up to those who did not. If you come alone, see the camp as a cold pool… Just jump in; it will feel warmer as you adjust to it!” —John Garzon, Surf and Turf Adventures

Make sure to bring sunscreen as the summers can be toasty and an extra set of clothes because fun is dirty! Also…don’t forget to bring a carrot for your pony. —Seaton Hackney Stables

Equestrian Summer Camps!

The theater classes we teach emphasize fun, supporting self-esteem and building confidence. We also highlight collaboration in our classes. Theater is one of the most collaborative of the performing arts, and learning that skill helps in every facet of life. When we collaborate in class, students learn how to give positive feedback, hear and appreciate ideas that may not have been their first choice, and give each person in the group a chance to contribute. Together, these things not only help bring the quiet student out of his or her shell, but also help the assertive student develop empathy and consideration for others. All while having a super-fun time! —Janet Sales, Artistic Director, Essex Youth Theater

L AURIE WA ITE-FELLNER:

Small Moments, Big Memories Story and Artist Portrait by Dan Epstein

T

here’s a quirky sweetness to the work of Laurie WaiteFellner that will get you right where you live. She studied at Murray State University, and then did graduate work at Southern Illinois University before moving to NYC and starting a career in the graphic arts field. Moving to Montclair in 1992 to raise three boys with her husband Marty she began to refine her vision. In one of her early pieces, Ubu Listening To The Mets, a 24x30 inch oil painting her interest in documenting quiet but oh so important moments of life begins to reveal itself. Then, working from a trove of her late father’s snapshots she began use them as the basis for a series of 10x14 inch colored pencil drawings. It was the quirkiness of her father’s eye: the specific groupings, the poses, the moments he chose to memorialize in snapshots that spoke to her own sensibilities that provided the foundation to this project. In Grandma, Nana, Aunt Ruth, And John we see a family dynamic at work. Two subjects dutifully looking at the camera, one busy appraising another, and a young boy impishly sticking out his tongue at the camera. A moment that couldn’t be more real. In Mouse Balloons it’s kids behaving as kids often do when parent aims a camera, two goofing with balloons in front of their faces, one older sibling who can’t get out the required photo, but refusing to engage in the childishness, and a mom bemused by the whole thing.

Subsequently, armed with the camera in her phone, she began to move away from using her father’s snapshots to finding the real moments in her own life to represent. In Pilgrim Diner, you can see her husband pensively waiting. Maybe he’s waiting for the waitress to take an order or for the food to be brought to the table, while surrounded by the hubbub in a busy diner. Who among us hasn’t been there in that instant? It’s an ordinary moment celebrated by Waite-Fellner. As if in each of her works she were to say to us: these little moments are the meat and stuff of real life; don’t ignore them for the big moments. They are quirky and sweet, and in the seeing of these instances from her life, we are reminded that our own lives are full of these delightful little fleeting experiences which should not be lost to our memories in favor of times more grand. Her trips down her own memory lane inspire our own. Moments in our own lives which like her art… delight us in their sweetness.

Neuropathy Breakthrough Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results. “It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down, anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward, and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.” This tragic story was shared with us by John M., a Millburn resident, who has Peripheral Neuropathy. And while no one was hurt in this accident, John M. had suffered almost every day for the past 8 years with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in and he could no longer feel even the brake pedal beneath his foot. “The first stage is pain,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on broken glass. This pain eventually subsides, and the numbness sets in. Unfortunately, with the numbness comes a lot of other problems.”

This was the case with John. “I said I wasn’t going to drive again. What if that had been a pedestrian?” It is terribly common that Peripheral Neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around; even the simple pleasure of cruising down to the shore or taking her out to dinner was outside his capabilities. And even more common, John’s general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribe him medications that would ease the pain of his Neuropathy. That’s where Dr. Aleksandra and her staff at Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Mr. John,” says Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc. “They’re in constant pain from Neuropathy, and it prevents them from not only living their lives, but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. Depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden.”

Visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com to learn more and to take advantage of their New Patient Offer April 2022

“I can’t lie,” confides John. “I was skeptical at first. My doctor told me there was nothing that could be done, and then, there’s an acupuncturist right here in Montclair who tells me she can help. Turns out she was right. After about four months of treatments, I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car! It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly, I feel like I got my life back.” While Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine specializes in acupuncture, and it’s definitely part of their protocols in treating Neuropathy, the real secret is in a more modern medical solution called ATP Resonance Biotherapy™. “This technology was originally developed by NASA to expedite healing and recovery,” shares Tammy, a patient care coordinator at the clinic. “It’s like watering a plant. ATP Resonance Biotherapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provide them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” You can learn more about Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, call 973-444-8932 and do so quickly. Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine is a very intimate clinic and the staff takes pride in their ability to take their time with each patient, so they are very limited in their ability to take on new patients.

Breathe Easier & Enjoy Spring! S

pring is a stunning season full of life as plants grow, flowers bloom and the sun shines. The downside of this abundance of beauty is seasonal allergens. Pollen from all those growing and blooming plants spreads via warm breezes and can make you feel awful.

your history and conducting an exam, allergists conduct tests to identify your specific allergens and treat your symptoms to help you take control. Testing for hay fever typically includes sensitivity to pets, dust mites, trees, grasses, weeds, and mold as they are the most likely triggers for nasal allergies.

“Allergic rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, has been around for hundreds of years, causing symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, mouth or skin, runny nose, and congestion,” said Dr. Mark Corbett, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “Your symptoms often depend on which pollens you’re allergic to.”

Start Medications Before Symptoms Begin

Allergists can help identify precisely what is causing you problems so you can take appropriate action based on your individual needs. Along with taking

Allergy symptoms can begin much earlier than the official start of spring. To lessen the impact, start taking your allergy medications two to three weeks before your symptoms usually begin.

In addition to meeting with an allergist, Corbett and the experts at ACAAI share these tips for feeling your best during spring allergy season:

Take Avoidance Measures

Consider Immunotherapy

Close your car and home windows during the spring allergy season as breezes carry microscopic pollen particles. Take off shoes when you enter your home and consider immediately putting clothes in the wash to get rid of pollen. Shower and shampoo at night before bed so pollen is not being transferred from your hair to your bedding.

Immunotherapy is designed to target your exact triggers through a shot or tablet and can greatly reduce the severity of your symptoms. Immunotherapy can also prevent the development of asthma in some children with seasonal allergies. Allergists are specially trained to help you take control of your allergies and asthma, so you can live your best life no matter the season. Find an allergist in your area at ACAAI.org.

Be Cautious Of Pollen Counts Keep an eye on the predicted pollen counts for your region, particularly if you plan to be outdoors for long stretches. There are many types of pollen and an overall high pollen count doesn’t always indicate a strong concentration of the pollens that cause your symptoms.

Celebrate EARTH DAY

F

riday, April 22 marks the 53rd annual Earth Day celebration. It is now celebrated in over 193 countries. The themes change yearly, and this year’s theme is, Invest in Our Planet. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is a great opportunity to spring clean. Instead of throwing things into landfills, repurpose them by donating to Facebook groups like the Buy Nothing Project, and Free Stuff marketplace groups, or to the needy. Volunteer. There are hundreds of ways to volunteer that can be found online like participating in small, masked group cleanups. Educate. Educate yourself and others on ways to heal the earth by reading, watching videos and talks. Conserve water. Earth day is the perfect time to intentionally start conserving water while brushing teeth, showering, and watering the lawn. Choose sustainable. If you aren’t already doing so, start using recyclable bags for food shopping and reusing plastic water bottles.

Use energy efficient bulbs. By using energy efficient bulbs and turning the lights off when you leave a room, you are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Plant a tree. Trees provide us with food and oxygen and help us combat climate change. Plant a tree in your yard or donate to a place that is planting trees. You will be doing your part to help the planet. Use non-toxic chemicals. By using non-toxic chemicals, you will be helping to send less chemicals into the waterways. Bike more and drive less. Make Earth Day the day to start putting this practice into motion. You can get your family in on the action by planning family rides. You will be getting some exercise, while decreasing emissions. Save pollinators. The bee and monarch butterfly populations are dwindling. We need these species for the pollination of our fruits and vegetables, not to mention the honey from bees. To do your part, plant friendly habitats for them in your garden like willows, fruit trees, and clover for bees, and pesticide-free milkweed for monarchs to eat and lay eggs on.

April is National Donate Life Month!

By Cathy Harvey

S

pring is the season of renewal and, fittingly, April is National Donate Life Month, which helps raise awareness about donation, encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.

Statistics say a lot… According to Donate Life America, in 2021, more than 41,000 transplants from 20,300 donors brought renewed life to patients and their families and communities. More than 100,000 people are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants. Another person is added to the nation’s organ transplant waiting list every nine minutes. Seventeen people die each day while waiting for a transplant. Eighty-five percent of patients on the waiting list are waiting for a kidney.

Brian Glennon 62

NJ Sharing Network in New Providence is a non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for the nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation. The Foundation is committed to increasing the number of lives saved through innovative transplant research, family support, public awareness and education about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

Statistics don’t say it all. Why do people become living donors? 46-year-old Brian Glennon, a Caldwell resident and married father of four, achieved his long-thought-out desire to “give back” by donating a kidney. Two years prior he had embarked on a life

reevaluation journey and volunteered at various charitable organizations, including the NJ Sharing Network, where his wife Elisse worked at the time and is now Executive Director of the Foundation. Glennon discussed his intention with the Living Donation Institute of Saint Barnabas Medical Center (recently renamed Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center.) The center is designed to promote living donation as the best transplant option for patients with chronic kidney disease who are either on or approaching dialysis. Because Glennon was in good health and his o+ blood type was compatible with other positive blood types, he was deemed an excellent donor. But Glennon was not donating to a loved one or an acquaintance. Instead, he was considered an ‘altruistic donor’—a kidney donor who wishes to donate to a person who they do not know. On October 3, 2017 his kidney was transplanted into a woman in her 60s whose kidneys had been compromised by lupus. Her daughter was unable to donate to her because of incompatibility, but as a result of Glennon’s donation, she was motivated to altruistically donate her kidney. According to Alyssa D’Addio, Director of Hospital and Community Services of the NJ Sharing Network, “just one organ and tissue donor can save eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 others.” In June 2018 he met his recipient on live tv on the Today Show. Both he and the recipient continue to thrive. As a result of her new kidney, the recipient was able to travel to Taiwan to see her father for the first time in many years and welcome her first grandchild. Glennon quickly returned to his favorite activities of mountain biking, road biking and running. Glennon states that his kidney donation left him “humbled, fortunate, and grateful that life has never been better.”

Transplanting kidneys, transforming lives. “With my new kidney, I’m still here, and I’m stronger than ever.” - Kristen, Charlotte, NC When you need a kidney transplant, the right treatment can help restore the quality of life you had before. As the tri-state area’s largest kidney transplant center, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is at the forefront of kidney transplants. We created New Jersey’s first and only Living Donor Institute, and our living donor program is one of the nation’s largest. From creative donor matching to outstanding patient care, our comprehensive approach is designed to get you back to the life you should be living. Learn more at rwjbh.org/kidneytransplant

Diamond Minds

Remind Me Again How Lucky We Are… By Barry Farber

T

hey call it “Doom Scrolling” these days. We can see the news from around the world in seconds, flipping through headlines with our thumbs. We see more death and destruction in one news segment today than most people saw in a lifetime 100 years ago. Want to get rid of negative thoughts? Anxiety? Doubt? Fear?Infuse more happiness and a feeling of calm in your life? Here’s one big secret I’ve mentioned many times before, but needs repeating. It will change the way you see the world and give you the opportunity to maintain more control in life and the goals you’re looking to achieve. It’s said many times throughout history in many different ways. It goes like this:

“We become what we think about.” Six simple words that will change the way you think, believe and act.

“You have power over your mind— not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” —Marcus Aurelius

So why do we need reminding about this? Reminding about what we should be thinking? I think it’s because we take it for granted having been given this beautiful mind free and clear. To put this concept to work requires doing the work. Putting in the effort to selectively choose what we think about. Selectively choosing our environment.

I recently recorded three interviews for a new podcast coming out called, In Search Of The Magic Tree. It included a world-renowned brain surgeon, a 4 time Olympian and “Mr. Wonderful” himself. Here’s the interesting part of this selfless promotion. Each one of them talked about the power of discipline at an early age and creating your own environment to enhance the content of what you’re absorbing. Barry Farber How we think and what we surround ourselves with. The idea of how you spend your time. Making sure you get the most out of every second and squeeze the best out of this life. We all see what is happening around us and in this world today. Why does it take a catastrophe to bring us together and see what clearly matters. How do we leave this place better than we found it? How do we help others along the way? To change what we think about requires making changes in our lives. What we read… who we see… what we listen to. There’s a saying:

“If you want to make changes in your life, you have to make changes in your life.” Simply said, but effort to get it done. It’s not going to be easy making changes but great opportunity lies within difficulty. Maybe because we have our minds for free we take them for granted. How lucky we are to have these minds free and clear. You do become what you think about. What are you thinking?

Barry Farber is a best-selling author, an award winning radio and television host as well as an agent and marketing consultant for corporations, professional athletes, and entertainers. He’s also the creator and marketer of the FoldzFlat® Pens. His latest release is an inspirational children’s book “In search of the magic tree” available at www.barryfarber.com
