For more than eight years, our clinic has specialized in helping patients with neuropathy, delivering over 1,000 neuropathy-focused treatments through an integrative, systems-based approach.
Burning. Numbness. Tingling. Loss of balance.
Pins-and-needles that don’t go away— no matter how many pills, injections, or therapies you’ve tried.
These are not rare or exaggerated symptoms. They are real complaints shared by patients who came to us after neuropathy began affecting their safety, independence, sleep, and peace of mind. Many worry about falling, struggle with constant pain in their feet, or find everyday tasks like gripping objects or buttoning clothes increasingly difficult.
Neuropathy isn’t just a nerve problem—it’s a breakdown in cellular and nervous-system communication.
At Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, we don’t chase symptoms. We work to restore the internal conditions nerves need to function and repair. Care is led by Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, L.Ac., who brings over 17 years of experience in advanced integrative diagnostics and neuromodulation-based therapies.
This is not standard acupuncture. It is precision-based nerve restoration.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
• Chronic peripheral neuropathy
• Diabetic neuropathy
• Post-viral or post-chemotherapy nerve damage
• Idiopathic neuropathy (“unknown cause”)
Especially if you’ve been told: “There’s nothing else we can do.”
• Are you afraid of falling because your balance feels off?
• Do your feet feel like you’re walking on broken glass or constant pins and needles, the way Mary did?
• Are your feet so numb and circulation so poor that you worry about what might happen next, or have you already lost a toe, like Ron?
• Do your hands feel too weak to open a jar or button clothes, as Sue shared?
• Does pain or burning wake you up at night, like it did for Bill?
These are not rare complaints.
These are our patients’ experiences whose neuropathy began affecting their safety, sleep and independence.
Our proprietary Vital Repair Method™ supports nerve health by calming chronic inflammation, improving circulation and oxygen delivery, supporting cellular energy production, and helping normalize nerve signaling. In addition, we offer a specialized homeopathic nervesupport formula through our AMS Advanced brand to complement in-office care.
This comprehensive approach is why many patients come to us after everything else has failed—seeking thoughtful, whole-system support.
BEYOND NEUROPATHY
This integrative approach may also be relevant for individuals dealing with chronic neurological or inflammationdriven conditions, especially when symptoms include:
Ongoing tingling, burning, or unusual nerve sensations
Widespread pain or stiffness
Fatigue, weakness, or a sense that the body “doesn’t recover” the way it used to
Symptoms that began or worsened after illness, infection, injury, or prolonged stress
Care is individualized and based on a detailed assessment to determine whether this approach is appropriate.

Twin TED Talks: Livingston High School Juniors Take the Stage
WHY WOMEN ARE THE KEY TO ECONOMIC GROWTH
Livingston High School junior Rhea Shah is already thinking at a global scale. Recently, she delivered a TED-Ed x Être in New York City, called “How Women Uplift Economies,” examining how investing in women can strengthen entire economies. Inspired by research on microfinance and women’s education, Rhea explored how women’s oftenoverlooked contributions drive long-term economic growth when properly supported.
Through the Être global network, with a mission to help girls raise their hands instead of lowering their standards, Rhea worked with Nobel Prize–winning economist Claudia Goldin, who mentored her throughout the process. This experience helped Rhea refine her research and sharpen her perspective on economic equity.
Although public speaking initially made her nervous, months of preparation helped her deliver the talk to an audience of more than 150 people as part of a multi-speaker event. Rhea, who is active in FBLA and DECA, hopes to study economics and business in college and continue exploring how policy and investment can create lasting social impact.
ENCOURAGING GIRLS TO TAKE RISKS AND INNOVATE
For Livingston High School junior Tanya Shah, embracing imperfection is the key to progress — especially for girls in STEM. Tanya recently delivered a TED-style talk titled “Messy, Bold, Brilliant: The Power of Imperfection in Girls,” via the Être global network, focusing on how fear of mistakes prevents many young women from pursuing opportunities in science and technology.
Tanya’s passion stems from firsthand experience. As the creator of Remini, an Alzheimer’s and dementia reminiscencetherapy app designed to support memory care patients and caregivers, she has often found herself as the only girl in technical spaces. Her talk challenged the culture of perfectionism that discourages girls from taking risks.
Through the Être network, Tanya was mentored by Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, whose work strongly influenced her message. Active in FBLA and DECA, Tanya hopes her work encourages more girls to try, fail, and lead anyway.
A New Social Club Answers the Call for Connection
Amanda Rabinowitz launched the West Orange Social Club with a simple goal: to meet new people in her town. After moving to West Orange from Hoboken with her husband, Tim Pouliot, they found making friends in the suburbs particularly hard as a couple without kids yet. She posted a message in a neighborhood Facebook group and was stunned by the response. More than 100 people replied.
That interest led to the club’s first meetup at McCloone’s, which drew 12 attendees. A second gathering attracted 22 people. Now the group has over 80 members, with 25+ people regularly attending events, and yes, there are always new faces.
Today, the club is open to people in the local area in their 30s and 40s at all stages of life. It has sparked meaningful friendships and even inspired spin-offs.
With game nights, happy hours, and more planned, the club is proof that sometimes, all it takes is one post to build community. To learn more, join the Facebook group West Orange 30’s & 40’s Social at Facebook.com/groups/westorangesocial.

Livingston High Graduate Is Helping Clients Find Their Calm
When Livingston High School 2016 graduate Ethan Reisbord left for the University of Texas at Austin, he imagined a future in international relations. Then the pandemic upended his plans and led him somewhere unexpected. Struggling with chronic pain and depression, Ethan tried hypnotherapy. Within two sessions, he says, his symptoms dramatically eased. The experience changed the course of his life.
Now a certified hypnotherapist, Ethan conducts sessions online through Zoom, offering clients a gentle, guided-meditation
approach to reaching a deeply relaxed, receptive state. His work combines hypnosis, talk-based therapy, and somatic techniques to uncover root causes of stress and create lasting change. Clients seek his help for anxiety, chronic pain, illness, and ADHD-related challenges such as focus and procrastination. He also enjoys working with children and has written about the potential benefits of hypnotherapy in schools on his blog at EthanReisHypnotherapy.com.
Keeping Chess Alive Through Play and Community
For Mike Somers of West Caldwell, chess has been a lifelong pursuit that has evolved from competition to community. He learned the game at age five, began playing tournaments by 12, and spent decades deeply involved in New Jersey’s chess scene. Over time, his focus shifted from winning matches to fostering connection, education, and appreciation for the game’s history.
A dedicated collector, Mike owns approximately 85 historically significant Staunton-style chess sets, many used in notable tournaments or reflecting classic
designs dating back to the mid-1800s. While he also owns ornamental sets, his primary collection emphasizes pieces meant to be played, preserving chess as both an art form and a living sport.
Beyond collecting, Mike has served in leadership roles with the New Jersey State Chess Federation and remains active in organizing clubs, tournaments, and library-based programs. He currently helps to run a chess club at the West Caldwell Library every other Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and is open to launching additional clubs. Contact him at hammer64@comcast.net.
Doing Good While Doing Well –Inside the Worthy for 30 Podcast
From his home in Glen Ridge, Eric Tash has created a podcast that spotlights people proving that success and service do not have to be mutually exclusive. Worthy for Thirty features conversations with startup founders, nonprofit leaders, executives, and changemakers who are proving that doing good while doing well is not optional, it is table stakes.
Released every other week and averaging 35 to 45 minutes in length, the podcast has aired 77 episodes and draws a growing audience of engaged listeners. Guests have included founders who helped
small businesses survive the pandemic, entrepreneurs working to improve mental health and cancer care, and nationally recognized leaders like Montclair’s IFundWomen founder Karen Cahn and Livingston’s Runway of Dreams founder Mindy Scheier, who champion social impact and innovation.
Inspired by ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, the podcast’s name reflects its mission of spotlighting people worth at least 30 minutes of undivided attention. For Eric, the goal goes beyond storytelling. He actively connects guests with opportunities to collaborate, serve, and amplify impact within their communities. The podcast is available on all major platforms.

Lighting the Darkest Corners with Care and Consistency
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
WWhat started as a casual conversation on the sidelines of a Livingston youth soccer game more than 15 years ago sparked a deeply rooted act of compassion that continues to change lives year after year.
Lianne Mandelbaum, a Livingston mother, was chatting with fellow parent Rani Steinberg when she learned that many of the children Rani treated through her work in Newark had survived sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. These children faced the holidays with nothing— no gifts, no celebrations, no sense that anyone had remembered them.
“I went into the hospital cafeteria that day and held up a cup,” Rani recalled. “I walked away with a few dollars. That’s when Lianne said, ‘We can do better than this.’”
They certainly did, building on that simple idea.
The very next day, Lianne teamed up with her neighbor Sharon Weintraub, later joined by friends Lori Jacobs and Elit Kirschenbaum, and launched what would become an annual toy and gift drive supporting children served by the Metropolitan Regional Diagnostic Center, part of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. The center provides medical, therapeutic,
and psychological services to children who have experienced severe trauma, often alongside their siblings and families.
In the early years, the effort was intensely personal. Hundreds of handwritten index cards detailed each child’s age and interests, allowing donors to sign up to shop for individual children. Over time, and especially during the pandemic, the group transitioned to a more sustainable Amazon-based system, allowing the drive to grow while remaining deeply intentional.
Thank-you notes from a college student and a young child who received gifts from the annual toy and gift drive.
Today, the impact is staggering. Each year, roughly 100 children are directly served, with gifts extended to their siblings, totaling approximately 300 gifts. Children receive games, art supplies, sports equipment, and increasingly, tablets that support telehealth therapy and schoolwork. Teenagers, often the hardest group to shop for, benefit most from gift cards that offer both dignity and choice.
Beyond the holidays, donations help mark birthdays, graduations, and major milestones. In one memorable year, the group helped graduating teens prepare for college with computers and supplies. In moments of crisis, such as when families experience homelessness, gift cards allow staff to respond quickly and meaningfully.
For Lianne, the rewards are profoundly personal. “We always received more than we gave,” she said, recalling handwritten thank-you notes from children who spoke of feeling seen again, even hopeful. Rani echoed the sentiment, noting that the drive lifts an enormous burden from clinicians who know their patients’ pain firsthand.

Finding Purpose in the Hardest Places
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
AAt 24, Erin O’Donnell of Livingston is building a promising career as a financial advisor at Forest Hills Financial Group. While she spends her days helping clients plan for the future, it is how she spends her evenings that reveals the deeper story of who she is.
Every other Tuesday night, Erin volunteers with Good Grief, a nonprofit that supports children and families grieving the loss of an immediate family member. She sits with high school students navigating loss at an already vulnerable age, offering steady presence and understanding.
Erin’s commitment is rooted in personal experience. She lost her father in 2021 when she was just 19. Although program guidelines prevent volunteers from sharing personal stories, her empathy comes from lived experience. “Every two weeks I’m brought back to reality,” she says. “You realize quickly what actually matters in life.”
Good Grief provides specialized training that prepares volunteers to speak honestly about grief without euphemism. Erin works alongside a co-facilitator, guiding conversations that range from anger and confusion to laughter and connection. “There’s a lot less crying than people imagine,” she notes. “Some days we have heavy conversations and other days we’re playing Jenga or Uno.”
Her service extends beyond one organization. Erin also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and was recently matched with an eight-year-old girl who, like Erin, has experienced the loss of a parent. Their relationship is built on consistency, conversation, and shared activities. “It’s really about quality time,” she says. “Showing up is the most important part.”
In 2025, Erin ran the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, raising more than $5,000 for Good Grief and $2,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. This year, she will run again for Good Grief on March 15, 2026. To support her fundraising efforts and read her “why,” visit bit.ly/49yrcig
While many people her age focus on career milestones or social plans, Erin is intentional about how she uses her time. “I had great examples when I was younger, so hopefully I can be that for someone else,” she says. By giving her time to those navigating grief or seeking mentorship, Erin has found purpose in helping others move forward.

ESSEX COUNTY PRESENTS
BALANCED AND RESPONSIBLE BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR 2026
Our 2026 budget increases Essex County property taxes by just 1.74 percent, which is lower than the state cap of 2.0 percent. This recognizes the financial hardships our residents have faced because of the rising costs of inflation that we are all experiencing. Developing our annual budget is a serious matter and creates the financial plan that the county will follow for the upcoming year
Strengthening Our Financial Foundation
Built a strong reserve fund through responsible budgeting, with a projected $75 2 million fund balance in 2026, giving the County stability, flexibility, and protection during emergencies.
Avoided costly borrowing by improving cash flow and eliminating the need for Tax Anticipation Notes, strengthening Essex County’s financial standing.
Generated $170 5 million in new, recurring revenue through shared services, grants, and alternative funding sources reducing dependence on property taxes.
Leveraged state and federal grants to fund major infrastructure and park improvements, keeping critical projects off the property tax rolls.
Stabilizing County Finances
Proposed a 1.74% property tax increase for 2026, staying below the state cap while continuing to deliver essential services.
Kept property tax reliance among the lowest in New Jersey, with just 51 1% of revenue coming from taxes compared to a statewide average of over 72%.
Maintained consistently low tax increases, averaging about 1.07% over the past decade and 1.39% over the last five years, well below the state limit.
Implemented a long-term “debt diet” strategy, reducing debt service to $87.5 million in 2026 and projecting further reductions in future years
Right-sized county government by reducing the workforce by nearly 400 positions since 2003, while protecting essential public safety and public health services.

Exhibition: Playing with Light and Color
PPlaying with Light and Color, is a vibrant and imaginative exhibition by artist Bruce Rainier.
In an age when technology evolves at astonishing speed— and when most of us carry the power of a studio in our pockets—Rainier embraces these tools with curiosity and joy. His work seamlessly blends photography with digital processes, creating images that honor two of art’s timeless foundations: light and color.
Each piece is printed, cut, layered, and sculpted into a three-dimensional collage, transforming the image into an art object. These works hover between dimensions, playing with space, shadow, and illusion. Rainier delights in tricking the eye: flat images appear sculptural, while layered compositions cast real shadows that become part of the artwork itself.
The influences are instantly familiar—abstract surrealism, a dash of psychedelia, and a generous sense of play. In a world that often feels heavy, Rainier’s work offers a lift: colorful, imaginative pieces that invite viewers into a brighter, more whimsical visual experience. Playing with Light and Color celebrates creativity, innovation, and the joy of seeing the familiar transformed.

BY SUE BALDANI
WWHEN YANINA FLEYSHER FOUNDED YANINA & CO. ALMOST 40 YEARS AGO, SHE HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WOULD ONE DAY BECOME A MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS. “I’M FROM AN IMMIGRANT FAMILY,” SHE SAYS. “I CAME HERE WHEN I WAS 12, AND WHEN I WAS 19, MY PARENTS LOANED ME MONEY TO START MY JEWELRY BUSINESS. IT’S VERY EXCITING TO SEE HOW IT HAS GROWN, AND I HOPE THAT IT CAN PROVIDE A CAREER FOR MANY GENERATIONS TO COME. I’M VERY PROUD OF WHAT I’VE ACHIEVED.”
Along with her brother and business partner, Alex Fleysher, and son, Branden Sheehan, the director of business development, the store’s success continues to grow. All three are designers, and offer what’s called the Yanina Experience. This extraordinary encounter encompasses so much more than high-quality gems, amazing in-house designs, and the shop’s beautiful aesthetics.
“When a client comes in, we make them feel like they are the most important thing to us, and when they leave, they feel really good, whether they purchase something or not,” she says. “I think that’s why we’re so successful.”
Yanina shares a beautiful story about a gentleman who comes in every year to buy his mother a Christmas present. “You would say
that he’s on the spectrum, and he walks to our store. He brings in only $3.00, but we always find something for him. It doesn’t matter if he wants earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet. We also wrap it up really nicely.”
Another way Yanina & Co. stands out is with its jewelry redesign services. “Jewelry is forever, and a lot of people buy it so they can pass it down,” she says. “When you’re wearing something of your grandmother’s or mother’s, it has sentimental value. Resetting that gives you something that you would wear and allows you to carry a little bit of the energy of that person with you every day.”
Although the company has grown tremendously and some things have changed, such as its updated showroom and jewelry designs, many things have stayed the same. “We’ve never changed how we take care of our customers, or the quality that we offer,” says Yanina. “We’ve never forgotten who we are and where we come from, and who makes us who we are. We love and appreciate every single client.”
One of its most enduring collections is named after her daughter, Sydney. “We came out with the Sydney Collection when she was born 29 years ago, so it will be 30 years old in August. We have quite a few pieces that are still very popular, but we’ve also evolved that collection in the last 30 years, and it’s done extremely well.”

We are ready for Valentine’s Day in our showroom. We decorate just as we do for Christmas, and it’s incredible.
– YANINA FLEYSHER
Now, Yanina is looking forward to developing Alina’s Collection, named after her first granddaughter, whom the family recently welcomed. “It’s going to be extremely interesting, and we are going to launch it soon.” She hopes that one day Alina will also join the business and continue its legacy.
Yanina expects this Valentine’s Day to be very busy, especially with lab-grown diamonds being a huge trend. “People have definitely gone in that direction because they’re more affordable, and they can buy bigger and better for their money.”
Because of this, she has noticed that Valentine’s Day, instead of just being focused on flowers and chocolates, has definitely become more of a jewelry holiday.
“We are ready for Valentine’s Day in our showroom,” she says. “We decorate just as we do for Christmas, and it’s incredible.”
Stop by and enjoy your own Yanina Experience, and buy a piece of forever.

PHILEMONA WILLIAMSON Childhood Stories
STORY & PORTRAIT BY DAN EPSTEIN
W
Working from her space in New Jersey’s Manufacturers Village complex of artists studios the paintings of Philemona Williamson speak to the universal concept of childhood, while often using her own as a reference point.
Growing up in Manhattan, educated at both Bennington College and then getting her Masters at NYU, she moved to New Jersey with her husband after the birth of her second child.
The winner of numerous grants, including National Endowment For The Arts, and a Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Williamson’s work has been seen in a plethora of both solo and group exhibitions across the USA and in Europe. She is represented by Galerie Semiose in Paris, June Kelly Gallery in New York, Jenkins-Johnson Gallery in San Francisco, and has been featured close to home in a major retrospective at the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey.
Shore Road, Magnolia Mass, a 60x48 oil on linen painting was completed in 1989 shortly after what Williamson referred to as her “break out show” at the Queens Museum in NYC. Inspired by an actual life experience when as a small child she fell from a car driven by her father who can be seen in the painting reaching for her from the driver’s seat. The subtle, perceptive illustration of body language we think is informed by Williamson’s study of dance while in college. Notice not just the balletic positioning of the child’s body, but even the fingers of her hands and those of the father as well. This painting is in the permanent collection of the Montclair Art Museum, purchased in 2017 after Williamson’s solo exhibition there.
Philemona Williamson
Autobiography is again visible in The Gathering, a 60x48 inch oil on linen painting completed in 2021. Is one of the children here Williamson? Maybe. But most definitely the dolls and marionette included are representative of her personal collection of dolls and toys. She shares with us that her parents worked as domestics, hence, we see a maid, and traditional Greek doll because the family who employed them was of Greek origin. Notice also a traditional African doll as well. The dolls are safely nestled in the arms of the child, just as children need a safe place to gather. The iron fence behind the children makes us wonder if the kids are safe within a space… or kept outside of it. We think Williamson wants us to decide.
Finally, we have Dwelling In Discord, a 40x36 oil on canvas painting completed recently in 2025. We see two children, holding close to one another, balanced on the branch of tree somewhat precariously. Will they balance together on the tree limb? They are separate kids, but seem to be wearing the same skirt. We can’t help noticing the fruit, and believe it’s an important clue to the children’s relationship. Perhaps Williamson wants us to work a bit for the answer and her message. Again, we love the body language of the characters in this story.
Williamson’s work fascinates and delights the viewer; a nice collection can be easily viewed on her website and those of the galleries that represent her.
Presidents’ Day Teaching Children About the Leaders Who Shaped Our Nation
PPresidents’ Day offers families and educators a meaningful opportunity to introduce children to the leaders who helped shape the United States and the values they stood for. More than just a long weekend, the holiday honors the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln while recognizing the contributions of all American presidents.
Teaching children about Presidents’ Day helps build an early understanding of citizenship, leadership, and responsibility. Simple conversations about honesty, courage, fairness, and service—qualities demonstrated by many presidents—can inspire kids to see how individuals can make a difference in their communities and country.
Hands-on activities make history come alive for young learners. Families can read age-appropriate books about famous presidents, create crafts like paper top hats or penny rubbings, or watch short educational videos together. Visiting local museums, historical landmarks, or library exhibits can also turn the holiday into an engaging learning experience.
Older children may enjoy researching a president of their choice and sharing fun facts with family members. Discussions about how presidents are elected, what the White House represents, and how laws are made help connect history to current events in an accessible way.
By celebrating Presidents’ Day with thoughtful activities and conversations, families help children develop curiosity about history and an appreciation for democratic values. These small moments of learning encourage young minds to become informed, respectful citizens—lessons that last far beyond the holiday itself.
Living the Dream Through Music Education
PProfessor Kathleen Calderone is living her childhood dream: teaching music. “It wasn’t a choice — it was a calling,” said Calderone of Hanover, whose lifelong dedication to music has shaped thousands of students. With multiple degrees and certifications in music education, ongoing doctoral studies, and her role as an adjunct professor at Kean University, Calderone brings exceptional experience and passion to the classroom.
In 1975, she founded the Calderone School of Music, now operating locations in East Hanover and Springfield. Together, the schools serve nearly 2,000 students of all ages, abilities, and musical disciplines. As a strictly educational institution, students (except those in the Kindermusik program) apply and are assessed to ensure readiness, motivation, and genuine interest in studying music.
Calderone believes in holistic learning, noting that music engages every intelligence and cognitive ability. Each student receives a comprehensive core curriculum that includes music theory, music history, and ear training — regardless of instrument or skill level.
The school features five divisions: Kindermusik for children up to age seven, Suzuki Strings for beginning violinists,
Private Lessons for all instruments and voice, College Preparatory for students pursuing music degrees, and Professional Development for educators and advanced musicians. The Kindermusik program holds prestigious “Maestro” status, ranking it among the top programs worldwide.
Supported by a faculty of 45 highly trained instructors, the school’s mission remains clear: to provide exceptional, individualized music education that nurtures both technical excellence and a lifelong love of music.

Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School
A Tradition of Faith, Excellence, and Innovation
OOur Lady of the Lake Catholic School (OLL) in Verona is a faithcentered, academically strong Pre-K–8 school that blends timehonored tradition with forward-thinking educational practices to prepare students for life in the 21st century.
Education at OLL extends beyond academics, with a focus on nurturing the whole child—intellectually, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. “With our strong Catholic faith and the dedication of our parents, teachers, and students, we are able to achieve excellence in education within a small, nurturing environment,” says Principal Tom Conroy.
A two-time Blue Ribbon School, Our Lady of the Lake offers an award-winning academic program rooted in literacy, mathematics, and faith formation. Instruction aligns with state and national standards while preparing students for success beyond OLL. “We use readers’ and writers’ workshop models in the lower grades, and our middle school students are exceptionally well prepared for high school,” Conroy explains. Students can take advanced coursework such as Algebra, allowing them to enter higher-level math classes in high school.
Innovative programs further enrich the learning experience. The TREP$ entrepreneurship program for grades 5–8 teaches students how to create and manage a business, building skills in budgeting, marketing, and financial literacy. The Forensics program helps students develop confidence and communication skills through public speaking and competition, with strong results at the local level. Athletics, including volleyball, basketball, and cross country, emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong fitness.
Parental involvement is a cornerstone of OLL’s success. Through an active Home & School Association, families support the school’s mission and fundraising sponsored recent improvements such as a new playground, LED sign, and building upgrades. “Catholic education is a shared commitment,” Conroy notes. “Everyone plays a role.” At its heart, Our Lady of the Lake is a place where students feel supported, inspired, and happy every day.

Serenity Montessori Academy:
A
Decade
of Nurturing Young Minds
FFounded in 2016 by veteran Montessori educator Sarah Colucci, Serenity Montessori Academy began with a single student and a bold vision. Nearly a decade later, the Verona-based school has earned a stellar reputation throughout West Essex, operating at full capacity with annual waitlists. Its impact has been widely recognized, including being voted Best of Essex for Best Independent Preschool from 2023 through 2025.
Serenity Montessori Academy is rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed, “each child is born with an absorbent mind, with tremendous ability to learn through their environment without conscious effort.” At Serenity, this belief translates into a progressive,
child-centered approach that honors each student as a unique learner. Children progress at their own pace, guided by individualized learning plans and supported by trained educators who foster confidence through positivity, encouragement, and thoughtful guidance.
Hands-on learning is central to the experience. Students engage with Montessori materials that encourage exploration through all five senses, allowing curiosity and independence to drive discovery. Grace and courtesy lessons form the foundation of daily interactions, nurturing patience, respect, and strong social-emotional skills among students and teachers alike.
SMA’s lessons coupled with tactile explorations of Montessori manipulatives create an incredibility learning environment for the thriving students at SMA. Humanities studies such as natural/ social sciences, art, music and peace education are integrated across the curriculum through active learning. This is crucial for building a global worldview and for developing empathy by connecting students to the story of humanity through history, geography, and culture.
To support whole-child development, Serenity Montessori Academy has weekly visiting instructors in music, yoga, Italian, and dance.
The school serves children ages 2.5 to 6.5 and is currently accepting applications for the 2026–2027 school year.

Varsity Forensics Team Takes First Place
OOn Wednesday, January 7, a group of Lacordaire Academy’s middle school students competed in a forensics meet at St. Elizabeth University, hosted by the Essex County Steering Committee for Gifted and Talented Students, of which Lacordaire is a member. The event brought together teams from roughly ten districts, including Livingston, Roseland, Bloomfield, Belleville, and West Essex, offering students in the Gifted and Talented program an opportunity to showcase their skills in speech and performance.
Lacordaire’s varsity forensics team earned first place overall, demonstrating disciplined preparation, strong delivery, and consistent performance across both varsity and junior varsity divisions. Beyond competition, the meet highlighted Lacordaire’s culture of mentorship. Varsity students dedicated time to supporting junior varsity teammates, running through pieces and offering constructive feedback in their spare time. This collaborative spirit reflects the school’s focus on developing confident, articulate, and responsible young people.
Participation in the Essex County Gifted and Talented Forensics Meet allows students to connect with peers across the county who share their drive for excellence. Lacordaire’s first-place finish reflects not only individual achievement but also the school’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment where students can exceed expectations academically and creatively, while also learning to be thoughtful and kind members of their community.

In Essex County, Right at Home of Essex County home care is one of the first approved provider partners helping deliver trusted and professional care services locally.
A key component of GUIDE is a new respite care offering that provides up to
72 hours of short-term care per eligible beneficiary each year. “This home care program allows caregivers to step away for medical appointments, errands, or rest, while trained professionals provide temporary support either in the home or at approved facilities,” says Paul IrwinDudek, Executive Director, Greater New Jersey Chapter, Alzheimer’s Association. The service offers financial relief for families who shoulder care responsibilities without insurance coverage.
Beyond caregiver support, the Alzheimer’s Association continues to lead in dementia prevention, research, and community education. With more than $400 million invested in active research and recent FDA approvals focused on slowing disease progression, the organization is advancing treatment and early detection.
Serving more than 19,000 individuals living with dementia in Essex County, the Alzheimer’s Association remains a trusted resource for families navigating one of the nation’s most complex health challenges. For support, call their 24/7 Helpline at 1-800-272-3900.

The Healing Power of Pet Therapy for Seniors
PPet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, is a growing trend in senior care that has numerous benefits for elderly individuals. The concept behind pet therapy is simple but powerful: involving animals in the care and treatment of seniors. This therapy can provide emotional support, companionship, and physical activity for older adults, leading to improved overall well-being.
For many seniors, feelings of loneliness and isolation can be a daily struggle. Having a pet around, even for a short visit, can help alleviate these feelings and provide a sense of connection. Interacting with animals can also trigger the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress and anxiety.
Furthermore, pet therapy can encourage physical activity in seniors. Whether taking a dog for a walk or simply petting a cat, interaction with animals can promote movement and exercise, which is crucial for maintaining mobility and preventing muscle atrophy in older individuals.
In addition to the emotional and physical benefits, pet therapy can also have cognitive advantages for seniors with conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The presence of animals can trigger memories and stimulate conversations, providing mental stimulation and engagement for seniors who may otherwise have limited social interaction.

The Power of Community: Helping Seniors Stay Connected and Engaged
Care That Comes to You
With Life Medical, there’s no need to travel or wait for hours in an Emergency Room or Urgent Care. Our team of healthcare professionals comes directly to your doorstep, providing fast, safe, and efficient care.
GGrowing older does not mean losing connection. In fact, it can open new doors to meaningful friendships, shared interests, and fresh experiences. A strong sense of community empowers older residents to stay active, social, and rooted in their neighborhoods, transforming everyday life into a chance for growth, laughter, and support.
Local senior centers serve as welcoming hubs, offering everything from exercise classes and art workshops to guest speakers and day trips. These spaces are more than just places to pass the time—they’re where friendships are formed, routines are built, and laughter is shared. Public libraries across the area also play a key role, hosting book clubs, technology help sessions, lectures, and lifelong learning programs designed for older adults.
Faith-based organizations, cultural institutions, and civic groups add another layer of connection, providing opportunities for volunteerism and intergenerational engagement. Whether it’s mentoring, community gardening, or helping at local events, many seniors find renewed purpose by staying involved and giving back.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Heart Health in February
What We Think We Know—and What Really Helps
FFebruary is American Heart Month, a time dedicated to the organ that keeps everything else going. It’s also the perfect reminder that heart health isn’t just a medical issue—it’s a daily one. While most people know the basics, many aren’t sure how their everyday choices affect their heart. This Heart Month, we’re breaking down what the average person knows about heart health—and highlighting simple ways to turn awareness into action.
Q: When people hear “heart health,” what usually comes to mind?
A: For many, heart health means keeping cholesterol and blood pressure in a healthy range and avoiding a heart attack. It’s often associated with doctor visits and medications, rather than daily habits. But the truth is, heart health is built far beyond the exam room. Simple steps, like scheduling regular checkups, keeping track of your blood pressure and cholesterol, and following your doctor’s treatment plan, can make a meaningful difference.
Q: Do most people understand what puts their heart at risk?
A: In a general sense, yes. Diet, exercise, smoking, and stress are widely recognized risk factors. What’s less obvious is how things like poor sleep, sitting too much, and chronic stress quietly strain the heart over time. Moving your body throughout the day, aiming for 7–8 hours of sleep each night, and finding small ways to manage stress—whether through walking, stretching, or simply unplugging—can all protect your heart.
Q: Is heart disease still thought of as an “older person’s problem”?
A: Very much so. Many younger adults assume heart disease is something to worry about later in life. However, heart disease develops gradually, making early prevention one of the most powerful tools we have. Building healthy habits early, paying attention to your family history, and making heart-smart choices now—rather than waiting—can help reduce risk over time.
Q: Do people recognize the warning signs of heart trouble?
A: Chest pain is the most recognized symptom, but heart issues don’t always announce themselves loudly. Shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, or discomfort in the jaw, back, or arm—especially in women—are often overlooked. Trusting your instincts, paying attention to unusual symptoms, and seeking medical care promptly can make all the difference.
Q: What’s the biggest misconception about heart health?
A: That it requires dramatic lifestyle changes. In reality, heart health is built through small, consistent choices that add up over time. Walking more, eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, and focusing on progress rather than perfection can strengthen your heart every day.
American Heart Month is more than a reminder—it’s an invitation. An invitation to check in, learn more, and take a few meaningful steps toward a healthier heart. This February, even one small change can make a lasting difference. Your heart will thank you for it—this month and every month.
Heart Smart: Ways Kids Can Celebrate Heart Health
FFebruary isn’t just about Valentine’s Day—it’s also American Heart Month, the perfect time to help kids learn how to keep their hearts strong, healthy, and full of love. Teaching heart health doesn’t have to be serious — making it fun is the key!
Start by helping children understand the heart. Explain that it’s like a pump, moving blood and energy throughout the body. Let them feel their heartbeat by placing a hand on their chest or wrist. Visual aids, like diagrams or heart-shaped models, make this concept exciting.
Healthy habits are essential for little hearts. Encourage kids to eat colorful fruits and vegetables, move their bodies every day through running, dancing, or jumping, drink plenty of water, and limit sugary snacks. Turning these habits into games, like counting jumping jacks or creating healthy snacks, keeps kids engaged.
Creativity and heart health go hand in hand. Try heart-shaped crafts, heartbeat art, or fun exercise challenges. Kids can decorate hearts with their favorite healthy foods or exercises, making learning interactive and memorable.
Heart health also means emotional wellness. Encourage acts of kindness, like making cards for friends or helping family members, to show that caring hearts are happy hearts.
Finally, bring it all home with a family heart challenge. Cook healthy meals together, go on walks or bike rides, and track daily acts of kindness. February is the perfect month to teach that healthy habits and love for others keep hearts happy and strong—inside and out.

Finding Balance When Life Feels Overwhelming
SSome days, life feels like a whirlwind— emails pinging, deadlines looming, and a million little tasks pulling you in every direction. When the pace gets this fast, the hardest thing to do is often the simplest: slow down.
Balance isn’t about squeezing perfection out of every hour. It’s about protecting your peace and making intentional choices. Start by prioritizing what truly matters. Let go of the extras that drain your energy—the endless scrolling, the “just-in-case” commitments, the things that fill your schedule but not your soul. Saying no isn’t selfish; it’s survival.
Boundaries become your best friends. Maybe it’s a morning coffee in silence, a walk under the trees, or shutting off notifications after sunset. These small pauses are not indulgences—they are lifelines. They let your mind breathe, your body relax, and your perspective sharpen.
Remember, balance is fluid. Some days will feel chaotic, and that’s perfectly normal. The goal isn’t to control everything, but to notice when you’re running on empty and give yourself permission to step back.
The secret to calm in a fast-moving world isn’t found in doing more—it’s found in
choosing well, pausing often, and letting go when you must. Protecting your peace doesn’t just help you survive—it allows you to thrive.
Life isn’t about perfect harmony; it’s about dancing gracefully between the chaos and the calm, finding your rhythm, and making space for what truly matters.

Rose Gold Wellness Offers Specialized Treatments to Address Long COVID Symptoms at
As COVID-19 continues to circulate, many individuals are finding themselves grappling with persistent symptoms long after their initial infection. These lingering effects, commonly known as Long COVID, can manifest as shortness of breath, chronic fatigue, brain fog, cognitive impairment, and even depression and anxiety. With an uptick in cases, the importance of seeking effective relief has never been greater.
Fortunately for residents of the Essex County, Rose Gold Wellness has been a leader in treating Long COVID. Rose Gold Wellness’ specialized treatments, including ATP Resonance BioTherapy and O3 ReBoot Therapy, are specifically designed to address the complications of Long COVID at the cellular level.
“Before I came to Rose Gold Wellness, I honestly thought my life would never be the same again. After battling COVID-19 last year, I was left with lingering symptoms that made every day a struggle. The fatigue was relentless – I felt like I was walking through quicksand just trying to get out of bed in the morning. Shortness of breath kept me from doing the simplest things, like going for a walk or even having a conversation without feeling winded. But what scared me the most was the brain fog and cognitive issues. I couldn’t focus on work, and my memory felt like it was slipping away; It was
terrifying. I had heard of Long COVID but didn’t realize how debilitating it could be until I was living it. Doctors offered me a little more than reassurance that ‘it would get better with time,’ but I wasn’t getting better.”
COVID-19 can cause long-lasting symptoms, known as Long COVID, because the virus damages the body at a systemic level.
Not all hope is lost however as the staff at Rose Gold Wellness have an arsenal of specialized therapies that not only combat Long Covid but can also shorten the lifespan of an active Covid infection.
“ATP resonance BioTherapy works by energizing the cells, boosting their ability to heal and repair, and increasing cellular turnover,” shares Dr. Rosie. “This process helps to restore normal function. O3 ReBoot Therapy complements this by eliminating residual viral particles and improving the body’s oxygen utilization, which is crucial for overall recovery and combatting those
cognitive issues many Long COVID patients experience.”
Sarah shares her experience, “After just a few sessions of ATP Resonance BioTherapy and O3 ReBoot Therapy I started noticing real changes. My energy levels began to rise, and the brain fog slowly lifted. It wasn’t long before I could take deep breaths without feeling like my chest was tightening up. I can’t even begin to describe the relief I felt. Now, I’m back to doing the things I love like enjoying time with my family, and getting back to my hobbies like painting and yoga. I feel like I’ve got my life back, and I owe it all to the incredible team at Rose Gold Wellness. If you’re struggling with long COVID, I can’t recommend Rose Gold Wellness enough –they’ve given me a second chance at living fully again.” Visit RoseGoldAcupuncture.com to learn more or call 862-622-6289 to schedule an appointment today.
Compassionate Care, Cutting-Edge Treatments
BY KIM FERRARO
FFor women who are eager to take on the role of a lifetime—motherhood—it is frustrating and heartbreaking to have fertility issues be a barrier to that vocation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, impaired fertility affected 13.4 percent of women ages 15 to 49 between 2015 and 2019. For more than 30 years, the Fertility Institute of New Jersey & New York has been helping women overcome the odds and attain their most rewarding title: mother.
From its office in Oradell and a justopened location in Livingston, the institute offers services such as ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization with preimplantation genetic testing, and embryo freezing that
yield success rates that are on par with those of the largest fertility clinics in the country, according to CDC data (cdc.gov).
Equally important to clients and key to their success in this fraught journey to parenthood is the compassionate, personal attention they receive. As Dr. Inna Berin, a codirector at the institute, observes, “The field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility is a seamless blend of medicine, science, psychology, and other intangible factors. It takes collaboration of all my scientific and medical knowledge, but also the right word, the right smile, the right reassurance—and a little faith—for the process to work.”
Staff members get to know clients intimately during long, in-depth conversations about goals and medical issues—talks that lead to a fertility treatment plan that patients collaborate on, Berin says. “Our personalized approach results in patients feeling seen and heard.” The mission is always to offer top-tier reproductive techniques in an environment of “warmth, encouragement, and emotional support,” codirector Dr. Zalman Levine says.

Empathy The Fourth Secret of the Magic Tree
BY BARRY FARBER
TThis month, we explore the fourth secret from The Adventures of Little Billy: In Search of the Magic Tree—empathy.
In the story, Ruppert the Toad offers Little Billy a powerful piece of wisdom:
“Look on the inside of those you see, and you shall find the Magic Tree.”
Ruppert isn’t talking about something mystical hidden in the forest. He’s pointing to something far more important— the ability to look beyond the surface of others and truly understand them. He’s talking about empathy.
Empathy is defined as the ability to understand, be sensitive to, and even share in the feelings and experiences of another. It’s not about agreeing with everyone or fixing their problems. It’s about seeing them—really seeing them.
When I think of empathy, I often think of my dogs. There is something almost magical about how they connect with us. They seem to know how we feel without a single word being spoken. Their loyalty is unwavering, their love unconditional. They don’t judge, rush, or multitask. They are fully present. They live in the now—and in doing so, they make us feel valued, understood, and safe.
Maybe they know something we sometimes forget.
Imagine what could happen if we brought that same presence and attention into our relationships with people. When we take the time to look inside others—to understand what matters to them, what they’re proud of, what challenges they’re carrying—we create genuine connection. Empathy allows us to momentarily see the world through someone else’s eyes, and in that space, barriers soften and trust grows.
Of course, empathy isn’t always easy. We live busy, often overwhelming lives, and it’s natural to become consumed by our own struggles. But Ruppert’s message reminds us that when we pause, listen, and approach others with curiosity instead of judgment, something remarkable happens.
The next time you speak with a friend, family member, or client, try this: stop talking long enough to truly listen. Ask yourself what makes this person tick. What matters most to them? What are they proud of? What might they be afraid of?
Empathy takes effort. Relationships aren’t automatic—they’re earned and built over time. But when we choose to listen with a selfless heart, we often discover what Ruppert promised all along.
That’s where the Magic Tree lives.
