Putting Essex County’s Health First

“IT CHANGED MY LIFE” Cedar Grove resident Danielle R. had been experiencing the painful side effects of Peripheral Neuropathy, “my feet and legs were excruciating, and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do, they said I would have to take Gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met Montclair’s very own Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc.

Peripheral Neuropathy is the pain, discomfort, and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Danielle explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?” She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling, and sharp pains that those suffering from Neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, it’s equivalent to walking on glass.” Danielle hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately, Danielle’s story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy. Are you unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis? You’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet, and you have difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes

because of the pain. Maybe you’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall. Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain,’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects.

Danielle and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, often walking up to 5 miles a day.

Fortunately, four months ago, Danielle read an article about Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc and her work to treat those suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy without invasive surgeries or medications.

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc, has been helping the senior community for over 10 years using the most cutting-edge and innovative integrative medicine. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable,’ she consistently generates unparalleled results.

Dr. Aleksandra, founder of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair, uses the time-tested science of Acupuncture and technology initially developedby NASA that assists in increasing blood flow expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. “Now, when I go to bed at night, I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” Danielle enthusiastically describes life after receiving Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc’s treatments. “I can wear socks and shoes!”

“It’s life-altering. As far as I’m concerned, Aleksandra saved my life!”

What was once a missing link in senior healthcare is now easily accessible to the residents of Northern NJ. If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain, or you’ve passed on dancing, or even a simple walk in the park because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc and the staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN!

Documentary About Life in South Orange/Maplewood

Third Grader Publishes Children’s Book

A

sher Yarmush, 9, a 3rd grader from West Orange has written his first book called, “Alex and Henry in China.” During COVID quarantine, his mom, Talia, a writer herself, kept Asher busy with activities including writing, which is how Asher came to write the story for children ages 4-8. In first grade, Asher studied China in school, learning about New Year’s traditions and animals native to the land, and he wanted to incorporate what he had Asher Yarmush learned into the story of two friends enjoying a typical day in Beijing. Asher says he likes writing because it is fun and that he plans to write two more books as part of the series. He was invited to read the book to classes at school and felt proud and special. He especially liked that the students laughed at the funny parts. He says he enjoys reading the reviews by strangers who have read his book, available on Amazon.

M

ichael Abdul-Qawi of West Orange has created a 90-minute documentary called, “Nice Towns” about his childhood hometown of Maplewood/ South Orange. It is his first time creating a documentary which came after feeling disappointed that, due to the pandemic, there was no 20th high school reunion. “I wanted to connect with my classmates and reminisce about what it was like growing up in the area and talk about Michael Abdul-Qawi what we wish had been different then and now,” he says. In the documentary, Michael interviews current and former residents, including classmates, people living in town, town officials, teachers, and parents. He says he wants people to know this film provides a platform to voice feelings that are often overlooked or unseen. “This film has hard conversations about inequalities in school and in the community and asks the questions about how to improve things,” he says. For more information about the film, go to nicetownsfilm.com

West Caldwell History Buff Hosts Podcast

J

ames Gardner of West Caldwell has always had a love of history. He majored in history in college and has given history lectures for many years. So, it makes sense that when he decided to start a podcast with his wife Kelly, after COVID hit, that it would be centered around history. The podcast is called, “Your History Your Story,” where guests discuss personal and family history. James has had many guests over the past two years including military heroes, those recovering from addictions, survivors of 9/11, people who are descended from historical figures like Grover Cleveland, musicians like the drummer from Hootie and the Blowfish and more. James says his podcast is not limited to famous people, it is open to people with amazing and inspiring stories to tell. “Hosting this podcast is fun and I enjoy meeting many interesting people,” he says. West Orange Resident Publishes Her First Book

A

rielle Dance of West Orange never met her grandmother, who passed away when her mom was a teenager. She always wondered what she’d say to Arielle if she were still alive. Arielle set out to write a book called, “Dearest One” in the form of a love letter from a grandmother to a child with 12 affirmations running the gamut from: dare to smile, take up Arielle Dance space, turn your face to the sun, know true love, and be gentle with yourself. She says she is “thrilled, overwhelmed, and grateful” to have been able to honor her ancestor and acknowledge grief she didn’t know was there. She says she has been doing a soft book launch in the area and enjoys speaking about her book at schools. “Dearest One” is available on Amazon, at local bookstores, and at bookshop.org.

ayle Turi of Cedar Grove has an interesting side hustle—she makes diaper cakes for people to give as baby shower gifts. In just two years, she has made over 150 of them. They are mostly made using a wagon that people can then use afterwards. “The wagon makes it a memorable gift,” she says. She adds other items too like washcloths, bibs, mitts, socks, bath toys, books and a stuffed animal. “I love doing this,” she says. “It is relaxing for me because I don’t have a lot of downtime after teaching all day and juggling three children.” Every diaper cake is different, however, some of the themes she provides include nautical, Nemo, vintage Winnie the Pooh, princess, farm animals and safari. Button Soup Endeavor Feeds the Homeless

Y

meals herself, she reached out to the local community and surrounding areas for help, which caused her to create Button Soup.

Right before the pandemic started, Yin heard about a group called WGT that fills a bus weekly with food and necessities to bring to the homeless. She asked if they needed hot meals, and they said, “Yes.” Knowing that she could not make 125 hot

Through the help of volunteers, the group makes 125 hot meals a week, which are delivered to WGT to be taken to Newark on Sundays. Yin says most folks make breakfast meals like pancakes, eggs, sausages, and more. On average, each participant makes 10-20 meals to be donated. They can make all of the same thing or can make different meals. The goal is to give the people being served the dignity of choice. Many of the volunteers then ride the WGT bus to the distribution location and help serve the meals.

in Chang-Darcy of Glen Ridge is passionate about helping others. She has run a local STEM program for children in town, volunteers on the Glen Ridge Conference Committee (CCC) that supports people running for board positions in town, runs the Glen Ridge NJ Community Facebook page, and most recently started a group called Button Soup, which brings hot meals to the homeless in Newark on Sundays.

Yin Chang-Darcy She says that her group also collects necessities like tents, sleeping bags, survival kits and socks to be donated. For those who don’t cook, but still want to help, there are opportunities to pick up and drive meals to Newark, to clean out the WGT storage unit, to help organize items collected and more. In addition, Yin often suggests that while people are donating items and meals, that they also donate boxes or canned items to Toni’s Kitchen. Yin says that “people want to help but don’t always know how.” She strives to make the volunteer opportunity at Button Soup easy and meaningful. “One person can make a difference, but many people working together is more powerful,” says Yin. Aside from delivering meals, Yin also enjoys talking with the people she is serving. She says, “They are so grateful and I wish more people could have the experience of talking with them and hearing their stories. They are a joy.” “I think people don’t realize how much they have,” she says. “They worry about the little things. But when you speak to these people it puts everything into perspective.” Yin’s message to anyone who wants to help is, “Don’t wish you could help— just do it.”

Evie Singer

Livingston Resident Starts KINDNESS ROCKS Movement By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein

E

She says adults have the same struggles and feels that without compassion people can become bullies. She is hoping that her Kindness Rocks will help stave off bullying and help people to feel comfortable in their own skin.

vie Singer of Livingston has launched a movement called Kindness Rocks where she paints rocks and decorates them with inspirational words, sentiments and words of gratitude meant to inspire and empower people who see them. The colorful rocks have words written on them like “Peace,” “Hope,” “Believe,” “Celebrate,” “Kindness Rocks,” “One Kind Word May Change Someone’s Day,” “Be the Change You Want to See,” “Strength,” “Breathe,” “Compassion,” “Celebrate,” “Balance,” “Healing,” “Gratitude Rocks,” “Be the Rainbow in Someone’s Cloud,” “You Are Special,” “You Got This,” “Be Kind,” “Livingston Rocks,” “Livingston Mart Rocks,” and more.

to place them elsewhere too. She says that if any businesses want her to leave some Kindness Rocks in front of them to contact her. She hopes that people will take one, share one with someone, or perhaps place their own rock there. She says she enjoys seeing people who find the rocks post pictures of them on social media.

In June, Evie began running an ongoing event with Yogi-Fit where people can donate $1 and take a rock. Funds raised will go to antibullying charities.

Evie is passionate about what she is doing and paints and writes on her rocks every day. It brings her a sense of calmness. She says she either finds rocks outside in parks and cleans them or orders them online. Evie would love to invite anyone interested in learning how to paint rocks to contact her. She says, “It is a fun thing for kids and adults to do.” She hopes to bring the program into the schools next year.

For the last year, she has been leaving the rocks in front of Livingston Mart, Well Bred, at CVS plaza on S. Livingston Ave., the municipal building/Town Hall, and at veterinarian offices, with plans

The former teacher of 20 years says that while teaching, she witnessed firsthand how kids struggled with self esteem issues and feels that kids should be taught compassion from an early age.

To contact Evie, send an email to singer.evie@gmail.com. If you want to follow her for more inspirational and motivational quotes and ideas, she is on Instagram @LifesHealthyIngredients.

“Making someone feel good can be contagious,” says Evie. “I hope these Kindness Rocks can do that for people.”

Come One, Come All! The Biggest and Best NJ Fair is Open By Sue Baldani, photos by Phil Hoops (ig: @hoopsapproved)

S

tate Fair Meadowlands is now underway and this year may be better than ever. There’s always something new to see, but popular attractions like Rosaire’s Royal Racers’ Racing Pigs and Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean are just two of the shows people really look forward to every year. “The pig races are such a crowd pleaser,” says Al Dorso, owner of the State Fair Group. The Royal Racers and are indeed treated like royalty. The Rosaire’s, he says, care for them like family and the pigs even stay in an air-conditioned trailer. They bring all types of pigs—small pigs, big pigs, slow pigs and fast pigs. “It’s a fun event, and some of the kids get to pick a pig,” says Al. “If their pig wins, they get vouchers for the popcorn stand or win a candy apple or a tee shirt, or something along those lines.”

Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean is another not-to-be-missed spectacular where audiences can see pirates jousting on a steel cable tight rope high in the sky, and watch them race on the legendary Wheel of Death. State Fair Meadowlands will continue through July 10th, and tickets can be purchased on its website or through its app. So, no need to worry about long lines delaying your entry into this magical world of fun shows, rides, games and food.

Butler and the Board’s Charcuteries are Homemade

T

he classic French art of making charcuterie— sausages, pates and terrines—is being revived at Montclair’s Butler and the Board, owned by Jeff and Cathy Butler, of West Orange. Charcuterie Boards have risen in popularity recently with pre-purchased items, but Jeff, a French-trained chef, cures his own meats. “Most businesses that offer boards buy already made meats and cheeses and just arrange it, but we make all of our own products,” says Jeff. In addition, the shop also sells handmade sausages, soups, bone broth, and vegan/ vegetarian items. Jeff, who also has a background teaching at the French Culinary Institute, offers monthly classes to learn about charcuterie. The classes run 11/2 hours where participants get to taste various types of meats, crackers, homemade cheeses and pickled preserves, fruits and more.

CASA of Essex County Aspires to Greatness on the Greens for Youth in Foster Care

C

ASA for Children of Essex County hosted its 27th annual golf outing fundraiser in support of the Essex County youth in foster care at the Cedar Hill Country Club. A full field of golfers gathered on a beautiful sunny day to play and raise funds via contests, raffles and silent auctions. While attendees dined on a delicious array of foods, honoree Karim Kaspar, Senior Counsel at Lowenstein Sandler, and long-time supporter of CASA Essex, spoke of his commitment to, and the importance of, building community within our society. Executive Director Marla Higginbotham commented on the fundraiser, saying “We are excited to be able to host our 27th year of the golf outing as we raise awareness about the most vulnerable citizens in the community - the children of Essex County in foster care. Honoring Karim for his longstanding commitment to the organization was long overdue.” CASA volunteers serve as the court’s eyes and ears in a child’s life, helping to improve the quality of information presented to the court and child welfare systems—to make sure the needs of these vulnerable youth do not slip through the cracks.

LadySlipper Posy FLORAL COUTURE

Blossoms in West Caldwell This Boutique Florist Crafts Custom Arrangements Perfect for Any Occasion

By Jessica Modrow Photos by Dan Epstein and Cathy Black

I

f you’re looking for a boutique florist who can create dreamy arrangements on a whim, head to LadySlipperPosy Floral Couture in West Caldwell. Adriana Maniscalco opened LadySlipperPosy in July of 2021 after running a floral business out of her home for seven years, while simultaneously maintaining a sales and marketing career in corporate America.

“My passion grew back in 2014. I had this urge to work with flowers. I just adored them. Everytime I received an arrangement, I would be in awe of them. How cool would it be to one day have a flower shop?” explained Maniscalco. So, she started designing flowers for family members and doing smaller scale events like baptisms, communions, and private parties.

Adriana Maniscalco

LadySlipper Posy Floral Couture Blossoms in West Caldwell “Customers started asking if I could make arrangements for their home. I was even subscription based at one point,” said Maniscalco. “Finally, my gut was telling me to take that leap of faith: to start doing what you love and don’t look back. So last year I opened up my first brick-and-mortar shop.” Her shop, LadySlipperPosy, is located in the heart of West Caldwell shopping, on the corner of Bloomfield and Passaic avenues. The shop offers everyday floral arrangements for all occasions. Customers can pop in to pick up flowers, candles and gifts, or work with Maniscalco to come up with something custom to their needs. Maniscalco hand picks all of her arrangements from single bouquets to designing flowers for weddings, grand openings, communions, graduations, and special events. “I make my own custom designs. Typically, when I have customers contact me, they ask me to put something together– designer’s choice. Sometimes they’ll tell me what colors they prefer or specific flowers. But for the most part, it’s all custom work,” said Maniscalco.

One of the things that helps to make LadySlipperPosy stand out among other florists is the type of florals that Maniscalco uses. “They’re more premium flowers–not always your common, everyday flowers. They’re imported from all over the world,” said Maniscalco. “I like to explore and see what exoctic flowers are out there.” Clients can see the types of arrangements Maniscalco puts together on Instagram, where she posts all of her latest work. It’s evident that Maniscalco has a deep passion for her career and pride in her work. “I pour my heart and soul into every arrangement that I design. I design them the same way I would design it for my family or myself. It doesn’t matter how small or large the piece is,” said Maniscalco. “There’s a lot of love that goes into it before it goes out the door.”

DENIS ORLOFF

Taking You to Places in the Heart Story and portrait by Dan Epstein

W

e all have places in which we are happy, content, and at peace with the world. The meticulously crafted watercolors of West Orange resident Denis Orloff take us to his, and in that journey, it’s as if we can’t help finding our way to ours as well. As an illustration major at New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design, he learned the ins and outs of creating images that in his very busy early career, would illustrate magazines, books, posters, and advertising. Yet it was after the birth of his first child that he put aside his brushes, and began to develop real estate. The Essex County area is dotted with the homes his firm renovated, or built from scratch, all of which beautifully harken to a grand time in American architecture. It was in 2006, when he found inspiration learning about the grandfather he’d never met, legendary painter Gregory Orloff. He took this inspiration to the Catskill farm his family owns and put it to work. “I have always been drawn to the light”, he says. “Light is everything. Sunrises and sunsets, the early morning light and the fading light of twilight; I believe that the depiction of light is one of the hardest and most gratifying things I can do in a painting.” Orloff believes that this special light brings up feelings of nostalgia and other deep emotions. And that it does when depicted by him in his remarkable watercolor paintings. Denis Orloff 38

The Minute Man Walk

Take for instance Old Faithful, which is the tire swing behind the house at his family’s Catskill farm. It’s been years since his now adult children relentless played on the swing which sits, almost forlornly, both maybe hoping for the next generation of children, while plucking at Orloff’s heartstrings, and ours, as it evokes a nostalgia for our own childhoods, and we find it triggering our own sweet memories.

Galli-Curci Barn

Almost daily when Orloff is at his Catskill home he walks past the former estate of renown opera singer Anelita Galli-Curci. In Galli-Curci Barn he’s captured the now unattended to barn of the estate in the late afternoon light he loves to paint. The barn itself is a leftover from the era of the large Catskill estates in the Bel Air Mountain area. With his masterful depiction of the light and extraordinary detail in the foliage we feel the loss of that earlier time. The Minute Man Walk is a country path near Concord, Massachusetts on which the Minute Men supposedly traveled to one of the first battles of the American revolution. Once again, we see Orloff’s skill at replicating late-day light, and capturing a mood as well as a place. And we find ourselves in a happy peace, inspired by this calm moment in time. Many of these exquisite paintings will be on display at the West Orange Arts Council in an exhibit during July and August. Orloff will be at the reception on Friday, July 29th from 5pm. Check the Arts Council’s website for other times, and visit his website and find a plethora of recent work. But be forewarned: in seeing the paintings of some of his special places, you may find yourself simply aching to visit them, or your own in real life.

ost Americans understand the link between ultraviolet (UV) radiation and skin cancer. Many are less aware of the connection between UV radiation and eye damages. UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or artificial rays, can damage the eye, affecting surface tissues and internal structures, such as the cornea and lens. Long-term exposure can lead to cataracts, skin cancer and other eye disorders. The greatest amount of UV protection is achieved with sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays; a widebrimmed hat or UV-blocking contacts. Wraparound sunglasses protect the best, and there are many sports protection glasses available as well.

hether you guffaw, chuckle, chortle, cackle, roar, howl, or giggle, the ability to laugh is shared by all people around the world. Humans even share this ability with apes and other primates!—Charles Darwin and many other researchers—have recorded observations of laughing in various primate species during play and especially when being tickled. These findings suggest the ability to laugh goes back millions of years to a shared ancestor. Tickling may not be what makes you laugh – but everyone has something that tickles their funny bone. Although the jokes people tell have shifted and developed throughout history, laughter›s positive benefits are unaltered.

Humor and laughter are universal and vital parts of a happy and healthy life. Keep your spirits up by finding ways to keep laughing. Though each person’s sense of humor may be a little different, you just have to seek out what you find funny or enjoyable. Especially when you are feeling down, it is even more important to try to find something to laugh at to lighten your load. Socialize with people who make you laugh for a boost. Sign up for a daily joke or comic strip. Follow your favorite comedian. Keep a running list of books, songs, tv shows, or movies that make you laugh. Or start a ‘funny file’ for emergencies with cards and pictures that bring a smile to your face. Even if you don’t feel like laughing, try forcing a few chuckles - the more ridiculous, the better. You’ll likely find yourself genuinely laughing before you know it! Just a few of the recorded benefits of laughter on mental, physical, and emotional health include: increased endorphin levels; increased production of immune cells and antibodies; decreased levels of stress-causing hormones like cortisol and epinephrine; improved memory; a refreshing mental break that helps—replenish mental resources;—strengthened social bonds; increased intake of oxygen, which stimulates organs; reduced muscle tension; and the ability to better handle scary or stressful situations.

About

The Silverstrom Group While the high-tech office of the family-run Silverstrom Group may speak for itself, the full-service practice takes the utmost pride in being what Dr. Gary Silverstrom describes as a “high-touch” team of well-trained, wellappointed specialists, started by his father, David, 45 years ago. “It’s not just one person’s opinion, it’s an entire team’s opinion—it’s 10 people coming together to develop the best possible plan for every single patient who walks through the door,” he says.

SPECIALTIES

“It’s unique because we can accomplish things faster, with the finest material, and it’s all done in-house, so we can control the final product.” It’s a fine-tuned formula that Dr. Silverstrom also contends makes it much easier on the patient, overall, regardless of their smile objectives. “The goal is that we want to do the right thing for the patient - always. It’s a relationship, and we would much rather have a long-term relationship with a patient than just fix a tooth quickly.”

ATRIAL FIBRILLATION Affects Kids and Adults of All Ages So Take Your Fluttering Heart Beat Seriously By Kimberly Blaker

O

ften, when we think of heart conditions, we associate them with age. Although atrial fibrillation (AFib) is found more often in those over age 60, it can affect people of all ages, even children. Two million Americans are affected by this serious condition, which increases the risk of health complications, including heart attack and stroke.

What is AFib, and what causes it? AFib makes the heart beat rapidly and irregularly. It commonly feels like a fluttering of the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, “During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s two upper chambers (the atria) beat chaotically and irregularly—out of coordination with the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart.” AFib, also known as arrhythmia, is not deadly in and of itself but is nonetheless a serious condition. It increases the risk of heart failure or can be the result of a serious underlying health problem. There are several causes associated with AFib. It can be genetic or may be caused by one of several heart-related diseases, previous heart surgery, sleep apnea, lung disease, infection, or an overactive thyroid. Caffeine, heavy alcohol use, street drugs, and certain medications can also cause AFib.

44

Suburban Essex

What are the symptoms, and how is it diagnosed? The most common symptom of AFib is a fluttering heartbeat or palpitations. Other symptoms also sometimes accompany the condition, such as: fatigue; dizziness; thumping in the chest; anxiety; shortness of breath; feeling faint or confused; sweating; and chest pain or pressure. If you do experience symptoms of AFib, diagnosis is painless and relatively simple. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and an electrocardiogram. A patient-activated cardiac event recorder can also help with the diagnosis. In the event of chest pain or pressure, you should treat it as a medical emergency because it could indicate a heart attack.

Types of AFib and treatment There are four types of AFib, although one form can progress into another. Paroxysmal AFib is intermittent and can last for just a few seconds or up to a week. Symptoms may range from none to severe. Either way, this form of AFib goes away on its own within a week or less. Persistent AFib doesn’t go away on its own. It lasts until it’s treated with either medication or electric shock. For those at high risk of stroke or if there’s another

Summer 2022

known cause of the AFib, physicians will treat the source of the irregular heartbeat as well. Longstanding persistent AFib doesn’t respond to the above typical treatments. So several forms of minimally invasive catheter ablation are usually considered. For this procedure, you’ll be given something to relax you and a local anesthetic to numb the groin or neck area where the catheter will be inserted. Finally, permanent AFib occurs when longstanding persistent AFib is unresponsive to treatment. If treatment has been ineffective, your doctor might decide to discontinue the treatment. This form of AFib is associated with an increased risk of a heart attack. It can also impact the quality of your life. So whatever the form of AFib, take the condition seriously. If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention without delay.

What are some of the unique and innovative products offered at Roseland Eye Care? We carry many boutique frames often not sold in retail chain stores. We recently introduced the Matttew line. This is an upscale Belgium manufacturer offering brightly colored eye wear in petite sizes for the client with a smaller facial structure. iGreen is an innovative line manufactured in the US. This line allows the customer to choose the frame shape, size and color. This enables the customer to design truly self-customized eyewear. More affordable eyewear is also available made with the same attention to quality and lens precision.

What sets you apart from your competitors? We educate ourselves daily on the ever-changing products available in the optical field. We are dedicated to providing the most effective and affordable lenses for our customers. We also specialize in fitting customers with unique lens requirements. We are able to give customers the individualized attention and time that large chains are unable to. Our satisfaction warranties will exceed expectations. Our customers often mention how pleasant their first-time experience is in our store. Unlike large retail chains, we spend significant time with all of our patients. We sit down with the person and evaluate their specific likes and needs. We are able to do this because we are a smaller, more intimate operation. We evaluate each client’s facial structure to determine the frame that would be most attractive on them. We consider their needs and preferences before we make selections. It is of utmost importance that our customers are satisfied with their selections. After all, glasses are part of your face. They should reflect who you are!

Savor the Flavors of Summer!

ringing your family together for a meal that tastes like summer is what the season is all about. If you’re spending an evening firing up the grill, flipping on the oven, forming a homemade salad or anything in-between, the time spent together enjoying warm weather flavors is what everyone truly craves. Your next backyard meal can start with a flavor infusion from Newman’s Own Garlic Vinaigrette & Marinade, a versatile option that can be tossed with salads or added to proteins before cooking. Made with premium ingredients and a special blend of herbs and spices, it sets itself apart by mixing garlic into the dressing in four different forms—minced, powder, granulated and chopped—to deliver a delightfully bold and zesty flavor with every bite. Take advantage of its mouthwatering taste with these Summer Shrimp and Squash Kebabs, an easy way to bring loved ones together both before and during the meal. Put an adult in charge of heating the grill while the entire family works together to marinate a concoction of shrimp, tomatoes, corn, red onion, squash and zucchini before threading onto skewers that are ready to hit the grates.

Mediterranean Orzo Salad

Summer Shrimp and Squash Kebabs

Servings: 4

Servings: 4 (2 skewers per serving)

2 cups cooked orzo

8 wooden skewers (12 inches each)

2 mini cucumbers, thinly sliced

1 cup Newman’s Own Garlic Vinaigrette & Marinade, plus additional for serving

¾ cup cherry tomatoes, quartered

16 large shrimp, peeled and deveined

½ cup canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed

16 cherry tomatoes

If hot weather means lighter fare is on the menu, this Mediterranean Orzo Salad can be ready in mere minutes. Just toss together a handful of tantalizing ingredients for a simple bite of summer that’s perfect as a meatless meal or al fresco side dish. Or you can turn it into a quick weeknight dinner by adding cooked chicken, shrimp or a protein of your choice.

½ cup arugula

1 large red onion, cut into 1-inch wedges

¼ cup pitted Kalamata and green olives, cut in half

2 yellow squash, sliced 1/2-inch thick

After a day of fun in the sun, some nights call for a quick and easy solution that lets the oven do the work for you. When pizza cravings strike, consider an option like Newman’s Own Stone-Fired Crust Pizzas that bring authentic, Italian pizza with lightly blistered crusts to your kitchen table. Available in three authentic flavors —Margherita, Quattro Formaggi (Four Cheese) and Spinaci & Formaggi (Spinach & Cheese)—the light, airy, slightly crispy crust is ready to devour after just 10 minutes in the oven.

In large bowl, combine orzo, cucumbers, tomatoes, chickpeas, arugula, olives and feta cheese. Toss with vinaigrette.

The Benefits of Bamboo By Barry Farber

T

his month I sat down with someone who is an expert on bamboo and has over 50 years’ experience with its removal, containment, and installment. You can never forget his name because they call him Bamboo Bob. Barry Farber: What are some of the benefits of bamboo? Bamboo Bob: Bamboo is beautiful, always moving, birds love it, and it creates incredible privacy. It is a great place to meditate because it’s sequestering 32% more carbon out of the air producing more oxygen than standard trees. Bamboo planted in Florida gets so tall that when the wind blows during a hurricane, the bamboo helps to direct the wind over the buildings, eliminating the buildings from getting a direct hit with160-mile an hour hurricane force winds. It is also known that the safest place during an earthquake is in the middle of a bamboo grove.

container to allow for root growth. We do a lot of container work on rooftops and backyards. We put high density insulation inside and seeping holes in the bottom so the bamboo can’t get out anywhere. Then we put 4 to 5 inches of mulch on the top. You don’t want to put too much mulch in the ground because it will decompose and turn into soil and the bamboo will jump out of its confines of the barrier. You always want to see the top of the barrier and have the edge stick up at least 3 inches. BF: If somebody calls you up who has bamboo and they want to keep it what do you recommend?

BB: If they want to keep it for privacy or whatever reason, we do an evaluation and assessment of the bamboo. We install a barrier around the bamboo. Anything outside of the bamboo like canes or rhizomes in the root system we remove and guarantee it for life. We do it systematically and use an air spade which is a 5 1/2-foot gun which is used in wars BF: If I’m interested to find land mines. BF: What’s the benefit of that? BB: Every hospital would buy it as to be used in scrubs, sheets, linen, etc. due to its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties. BF: That sounds very interesting. What about bamboo shoots as food? I heard that they are nutritious if you pick the shoots right when they are new? BB: Yes. Bamboo shoots are very beneficial to your health. They’re rich in nutrients and may be associated with several health benefits, including increased weight loss, improved digestive health, and decreased cholesterol levels. However, it’s important to cook them properly to reduce their number of toxic compounds. People can enjoy them in moderation as part of a healthy, wellrounded diet. BF: Seems that people use a lot of chemicals to keep their lawn green, which we know has long term negative effects on our health. Is there a simple and natural way that works to get rid of what people call undesirable weeds? BB: You can put vinegar, a small amount of salt, and dish soap in a bottle and spray it on the weeds and that should do the trick. BF: What got you into bamboo as a profession that your passionate about? BB: I have been a horticulturist since 1974. I have studied and grown thousands of species of tropical and subtropical plant material. This has evolved specifically into focusing on bamboo. I educate myself daily on the plant and it has turned into quite an adventure. For more information about Bamboo Bob visit www.bamboobob.com.
