March Madness Fundraiser

Nominate Women of Berkeley Heights

elping Hands of Chatham, a group comprising local residents raising funds to provide grocery gift cards to local families in need during the pandemic, is celebrating its 1-year anniversary this March with a March Madness fundraiser.

Participants are invited to purchase $15 raffle tickets for one of two instant wine fridge restock prizes valued at $265, which are being donated by Friends of the Candace Lane—Johnson Dr. Neighborhood of Chatham, NJ. The drawing will be held on St. Patrick’s day. Those interested in participating in the raffle can enter by making a $15 Venmo donation to @ JoannCarroll. he Berkeley Heights Diversity Council is seeking nominations for its “Women of the Week” (WOW) series to celebrate Women’s History Month in March. Summit Seeks Hometown Heroes

E

nrollment is open for Summit’s 4th Annual Hometown Heroes Program, where banners with names, images and dates of service of active military and veterans, will be displayed on Summit city streets from mid-May through mid-August. The program will include a total of 250 honorees. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, with a deadline of March 31. Applicants must have lived or worked in Summit in the past or present. Eligibility includes those who have served in the Air Force, Marines, or Navy or are members of the Merchant Marine and Women Airforce Service Pilots in World War II. They may also be current or former volunteers in the Summit EMS, police Auxiliary or Volunteer Fire Division. More information is available on the cityofsummit.org website.

n light of the pandemic, Millburn is taking advantage of the Bridge Year Pilot Program that was recently announced for all of NJ by the NJ Department of Education. It permits a fifth year of high school for students in the 2021 and 2022 high school graduating classes. Those enrolled are able to defer their graduation for one year, while participating in one more year of academic courses and extracurricular activities including Spring sports. This program enables students to take advantage of missed opportunities because of COVID. They are still able to participate in graduation ceremonies and walk with their classes, but their diploma is held until the fifth year is completed.

While students remain enrolled at Millburn High School, they must take between 9-12 credits each semester that may be earned from a combination of MHS and the County College.

American Association of University Women Offers Grants

he AAUW Madison Branch is offering a Mature Woman Grant for women 25 and over to be used for education-related expenses incurred in pursuit of a degree or certification. Applicants must reside in Chatham, Chatham Township, East Hanover, Florham Park, Harding Township, Madison, Morristown, Morris Township, Morris Plains or Randolph Township. Free Audition Workshop Series

he Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts will offer a series of Audition Workshops through April 30, including Do You Know Your Scales & Arpeggios?, Tips for Making a Great Audition Video, and New Jersey Youth Symphony Audition Preparation Excerpt Workshops.

Instrumentalists entering grades 3-12 from anywhere in the world are invited to take advantage of this series of virtual workshops to hone skills and prepare for orchestral auditions.

These instrument-specific audition workshops will provide extra support to help them hone their basic skills and prepare for upcoming auditions.”

Through March 10, local restaurants can enter by submitting a burger from their menu OR one can be created—but, the entrees MUST be SPECIAL. In order to qualify the burgers must be much more than a Big Mac. Rather they need to be unique creations that include special meats/proteins, buns, toppings, fillings and/or flavor profiles. Also the burger must be available to the public for purchase for 60 days from the start the contest which begins April 1st.

Each burger will be featured in Vicinity Magazine and online where residents can vote for their favorites. The burgers with the most votes will be awarded Gold, Silver, Bronze Medals and be featured in Vicinity Magazine.

veryone knows someone—a family member, a friend, or a neighbor who is a victim of physical, mental, or financial abuse. Abuse does not discriminate. It occurs throughout our population and affects the young, the old, every race, gender, creed, and all socio-economic sectors. Because one in five people suffers from intimate partner abuse, you likely have a story to tell.

In 1976, a group of women volunteers recognized the need to confront intimate domestic partner abuse within Morris County. With determination and few resources, they set up a helpline and shelters within their own homes to help abused women, the primary victims at that time. The murder/ suicides of two victims brought greater awareness to their mission. From its humble beginnings, the Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS) opened its first shelter in 1978.

Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, JBWS is a non-profit public agency offering its services to Morris and Essex Counties. Their assistance is far-reaching with approximately 80 full-time staff members more than 200 volunteers, the organization endeavors to fulfill its mission of safety, support, and solutions for abuse victims.

As the needs for services and social issues have changed, JBWS has evolved to meet these challenges. Diane Williams, CEO of JBWS remarked, ”Accordingly, our commitment to being inclusive and welcoming to survivors regardless of gender identity prompted us in 2019 to change our name from Jersey Battered Women’s Service to JBWS, Safety, Support & Solutions to Abuse. We continued to pivot in 2020 when victims were trapped at home with their abusers during the pandemic, and although our helpline, shelter, and transitional housing remained open, we quickly transitioned to remote options for counseling, legal advocacy, and support services. Additionally, as we move into 2021, we continue to strive to provide quality services through the lens of racial justice.”

Since housing insecurity is a growing concern in Morris County, JBWS and other leaders of Morris County’s nonprofit homeless shelters are working tirelessly with state officials to resolve this crisis. They urge the U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development to make transitional housing for these populations a priority.

and Teen Dating Abuse Counseling are the mainstays of the youth counseling program. Solutions are always within reach whether it be remotely or in person.

The Morris Family Justice Center (MFJC) has provided services to thousands of victims and their children since March 2016. The MFJC is a collaboration of partner legal services in one place and is an evidence-based national model of the community’s response to domestic violence. In 2020, JBWS quickly transitioned to providing remote services to survivors and their families with over 335 individuals receiving 970 hours of support from center staff.

Lastly, JBWS provides continuing and preventative education to the community. Students from grade 6 through college age may participate in special group programs and discussions throughout Morris and Essex Counties. These offerings include dating relationships and provide solutions to abusive treatment in relationships. Civic organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, the Rotary Club, and other groups receive presentations from JBWS. On May 4-6, 2021, JBWS will host its Tricky Tray for Hope virtually. The event will include jewelry, designer handbags, home décor, wine baskets, gift cards, a vacation package with luggage, and more. Supporting Essential Workers and Local Restaurants Millburn/Short Hills FLAG Group Raises Over $100K During Pandemic

S

hort Hills residents Shannon Cross and her daughter Sydney, a senior at Millburn High School, went above and beyond during the pandemic to not only support essential workers but to support local restaurants too. The women established a group called Front-Line Appreciation Group (FLAG), which brought the Millburn/Short Hills community together in a very short period of time to raise over $100,000 and serve over 9,000 meals from April through August 2020.

If all goes well, the women hope to initiate another push through April 2021, via a $100K—$200K grant they applied for that will help keep local restaurants afloat, since they are still operating at 35 percent capacity and are unable to offer outside seating until it gets warmer.

“The experience was phenomenal,” says Shannon, who got the idea for the initiative after learning that morale was poor among the essential workers, from her son, Tyler, who was home from Cornell and volunteering as an EMT. Noting this and that there were a few grassroots FLAG groups popping up on Facebook, Shannon and Sydney went to work. They created a website, Facebook page and set up ways to handle donations. They also worked with local restaurants to create hearty $10 meals that provided a good margin for the establishments.

“The money raised didn’t come in large chunks, although at times, a few local neighborhoods pooled funds together to donate $1,000 at a time,” says Shannon.

“Rather, we received many donations of $25 and $50 at a time, which really began to add up, as well as donations from PTOs, synagogues, churches, the Scouts and more.”

“It was heartwarming,” says Shannon.

“The whole community came together.

Some of the chefs even wrote encouraging messages on the bags they sent out.”

Shannon, who is on the board of Overlook hospital, began contacting local hospitals and quickly realized that while the larger ones were receiving meal donations, many of the smaller, under-represented institutions including University Hospital, in Newark, the VA hospital in East Orange, Clara Maas in Belleville and Mountainside in Bloomfield, were not. So, she and Sydney set their sights on sending them 100 - 200 meals a day. They also sent meals three times a week to Millburn’s first responders.

“The recipients were grateful for FLAG’s support,” says Shannon. “One head nurse at the VA hospital burst into tears when I contacted her.”

Shannon says the meals not only supported doctors and nurses, but the respiratory therapists who were running bed to bed, the housekeeping and maintenance staffs, EMTs, First Aid Squads, 911 dispatchers, Kessler, and even the staff at the staging areas outside of the hospitals.

“It was a lot of work, but so worthwhile,” says Shannon, who says she will hear any day now as to whether or not FLAG received a grant to help get restaurants over the winter hump. Then she and Sydney will get back to work.

ake Garza, 17, of Madison, has been on a mission throughout the pandemic to help keep the food sensitive shelves stocked at the Morris Plains Interfaith Food Pantry. To do so, he created the Allergy Advocacy, Art, and Action initiative where he sells his art to purchase food for the pantry.

“This project addresses the lack of awareness and often overlooked need for safe foods in pantries,” says his mom, Jan Garza.

While homebound at the onset of the pandemic, Jake took up painting to help pass the time. After creating many works of art, his initiative was born.

During middle school, Jake and his dad volunteered at the pantry and Jake “realized that if he ever needed assistance, he’d only be able to receive fruit and water because of his allergies.”

Jake donated 476 lbs. of food after selling his first 12 paintings, 350 lbs. with the next batch, and is now working on a third batch of paintings.

In March, 2020, Jake went to Capitol Hill to lobby for the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education and Research (FASTER) Act, and says he plans to study food science and genetics, as related to food allergies, at college.

“This initiative is very personal to Jake because his food allergies impact his everyday life, says his mom. “To see him trying to make a difference makes me really happy and proud.”

olunteering is an excellent way for families to make a difference in their communities and offers lots of benefits to those who volunteer their time and skills. First and foremost, nothing is more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. What’s more, volunteering raises kids’ sense of civic responsibility. It also makes for an excellent family bonding and skill-building experience as well as socialization opportunity for kids and adults alike.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. At a soup kitchen, you can help prepare and serve a meal or do kitchen cleanup. For a food pantry, help with stocking or putting together food baskets for families in need. Some pantries also need delivery assistance since many lowincome families don’t have transportation to pick up their food supply.

Help out at an animal shelter. Offer to spend an afternoon walking dogs or playing with cats. You can transport a pet to a new home, clean kennels, donate supplies, or help find loving homes through social media. Animal rescues are always in need of families to foster homeless pets.

Adopt a road or park for cleanup. Most states have adopt-a-highway programs. These typically require a signed contract for a period of 2 to 4 years with a promise to clean up a designated area 2 to 4 times a year. Alternatively, you could pick an unsightly city street and head out to clean up the debris. kids, park cleanup is a safer option.

Paint a park bench. Contact your city hall or parks and recreation department, and request permission to freshen up a bench. If your family is artistic, ask if you may do something creative to make it more cheerful.

hrough immersive experiences children ages 2 to 6 collaborate to solve problems, use their imaginations to transform their surroundings and play along with Daniel’s singable strategies as they learn life’s little lessons.

The exhibit replicates adventures of four-year-old Daniel and his friends and includes immersive activities such as an Imagination Stage— where kids can put costumes of the beloved characters and step onto the stage to act; The Music Shop—where children can express themselves creatively through unusual instruments; The Post Office—where they can sort, deliver and receive packages and letters; and a Thank You Tree—where visitors can write or draw thank-you notes and put them on the neighborhood tree.

Women’s History Month Allows Us to Honor Remarkable Women of Today and Remember Those That Paved the Way

W

omen’s History Month, which takes place during the whole month of March, is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. It has been observed annually in the US since 1987.

Celebrating women for a whole month provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the amazing contributions of women like Abigail Addams, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Kamala Harris and so many other remarkable women who have greatly impacted US history. It also lends itself to honoring and celebrating women making a difference today, locally.

From 1993 until her death in 2020, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second female justice, and the first Jewish female justice on the Supreme Court. She provided a strong voice in favor of gender equality, the rights of workers and the separation of church and state.

It wasn’t so long ago that women didn’t have the right to vote, but look at how far women have come since this was attained on August 8, 1920. There is now a woman serving as the Vice President of the US, in the White House. This is an accomplishment that the women who fought for the right to vote could never have dreamed of, yet, through their blood, sweat and tears, they led the way for it to happen. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris is an inspiration to all women, especially to little girls, who have now learned that anything is possible as a woman.

It also wasn’t so long ago that women couldn’t go to college, which is something unfathomable to the empowered women of today, who are doctors, lawyers, CEOs, professors, scientists, politicians, and businesswomen. Without the efforts of the strong women who came before us, competing for the same jobs and wages as men would not be achievable today. In fact, according to Biz Journal, “every board of directors in the S&P 500 now has a woman on the board; and, as a result of the 2020 election, women now make up a quarter of all members of the 117th Congress.”

Women have also made huge contributions to culture as artists, writers, actors, dancers, chefs, and so much more, leaving their marks on the world through their passions. We study them in school and learning about their set-backs and achievements helps to propel women of today to dream and achieve the impossible.

Kamala Devi Harris is serving as the 49th vice president of the United States. She is not only the first female US vice president, she is also the first African American and first Asian American vice president.

do to bring my friends and colleagues back to life, it was a catalyst for my own change.

Mountain climbing came to me as a result of my own initiative to use the sad and tragic events of 911 to encourage myself to do something in the spirit of these people that I had lost. I decided then and there that I was going to climb a mountain and see if it was something that would speak to me for my own personal change. Exactly one year later I stood on the summit of Mount Rainier and it changed everything I thought about the world and myself.

Barry Farber: How did you get into mountain climbing?

BF: What did you learn from mountain climbing that applies to your professional life and personal life?

Chuck Garcia:I was scheduled to speak on 911 at 3pm in the World Trade Center and never made it into the building.

Unfortunately, on my way to the building the tower had collapsed and three of my colleagues from Bloomberg, who were in the building as a result of supporting my speech, never made it out. That caused me to have a moment of incredible selfreflection. While there was nothing I could

CG: It felt like a metaphor for the way that I climbed my own career. As I was ascending or descending the mountains, I was thinking how grateful I was as I went through struggles, hardships and unexpected twists and turns just like a career. However, so much generosity was given and received from everyone on the climbing team all in the service to unify our efforts to achieve our goals. That’s

mountain climbing, that’s career climbing and that’s life.

BF: What are three pieces of advice you could give the readers?

CG: Given the amount of fear and anxiety that is in the world, my first piece of advice is never ever be afraid to make a mistake but always be afraid of never learning from them. Second, do not strive for perfection but always strive for progress. And my third piece of advice that I have learned myself and from some of the guests on my program is that there is no failure, there is only feedback. Failure is a mindset; feedback is the development of your mindset.

BF: What is your definition of success today?

CG: Success is when somebody wakes up every morning and recognizes how fortunate they are to do whatever it is they set out to do.

BF: What is the greatest piece of advice you received from one of your mentors?

CG: Mike Bloomberg once said to me; “Garcia, if you’re not making mistakes you’re not working hard enough.” At that very moment he gave me permission to go out and try and screw things up. He was the one that drove into my head to adjust and adapt and not worry about the mistakes...just get climbing. Adjustments are the difference between mediocrity and achievement.
