Summit’s Red Ribbons

O

ver the years, Summit residents may have taken notice of the red ribbons tied around trees in the Centrail Retail Business District. This year, even during COVID, the tradition has continued in an effort to send an important message. The “Red Ribbon Awareness Program,” a collaborated between Shaping Summit Together and Summit Public Schools, aims to deliver messages of hope, helping others, making healthy choices and community spirit. For the project this year, The Hilltop City Girl Scouts of Troop 45241 from Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School have tied ribbons with the slogan “Honor the Call to Protect Against Drugs and Violence… Celebrate Life.” a message that has been consistent for more than 12 years. Through the ribbons, the send the message to youth and parents to observe under-age drinking laws, practice abstinence from illegal substances, and be kind online and in person. Shaping Summit Together is a 501c3 organization whose mission is to ensure that Summit reaches its full potential as a mature, diverse, suburban community. “SST” facilitates efforts so that Summit can work together to shape its future.

Helping to Deliver a Joyous Holiday to Locals in Need

T

he Santa Claus Shop will open its doors once again to area families, providing its 54th consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit and other local communities, including New Providence and Berkeley Heights, who are referred by social services agents. This year’s event will be held on December 2, in the parking lot at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. Although families cannot shop the way they have in the past, due to the pandemic, we are still committed to making this experience enjoyable for all the families. To keep the holiday spirit alive for local residents in need, and this year more than ever, the Santa Claus Shop chairwomen ask for members of the community to consider giving. Checks can be made payable to SHIP, with Santa Claus Shop noted on the check’s memo line, and mailed to the Santa Claus Shop, P.O. Box 119, Summit, NJ 07901. The ability to make an online donation is also available at www.summitsantaclausshop.com. Late Fall 2020

TRANSITIONAL with a Twist KITCHEN REMODEL

T

he main goal of the project was to work within the existing space to maximize the functionality for a family friendly kitchen. Galley kitchens are often the most practical and functional, but the existing kitchen was lacking in those departments. By making some modifications to the sizes of appliances and location of the island, we were able to create an open space that's perfect for both every day use and entertaining.

The 48" range as a focal point in the space with a custom hood made on site. The open space around the hood and open shelves in the corner actually make the kitchen feel more open and airy.

eneral Plumbing Supply, in business since 1910, is still familyowned and operated. Begun as a small company with one location, it is now one of the largest distributors on the East Coast, serving New Jersey, New York, and Eastern Pennsylvania. “Our customer service is one of the things we pride ourselves on and really makes us stand apart, along with the family owned values that we have instilled in the company over the years,” says Sarah Barton, marketing director. “We’re really hoping that when someone enters one of our showrooms, they’re getting the best customer experience and help.” Since General Plumbing Supply offers everything needed for a kitchen and bath space, from standard plumbing fixtures like faucets and shower heads, to tubs, toilets, countertops, cabinetry and lighting, customers can design an entire room with products from one store.

“People can come into any of our 12 showrooms and design an entire space,” says Sarah. “So, even those add on things you might not think about, like towels bars or lighting. Many of the lines we carry offer accessories to match your fixtures.” The products offered are high quality. They don’t just look good, but also perform well over time. magine living life to the fullest in a Wellness Community that caters to your own goals, lifestyle preferences, and your personal needs. Sycamore understands that as time passes life changes. “Being able to stay in a familiar and safe environment where trusting relationships have been established matters”, says Chief Operating Officer Rich Molfetta. Regardless of your level of care, Sycamore can accommodate your needs through their comprehensive and integrated services. The atmosphere at Sycamore Living, open since last April, is light-years away from that of a traditional nursing home. This state-of-the-art facility provides a tranquil, yet engaging environment. Each floor consists of two cozy “neighborhoods” with a central kitchen and dining area, living room with a safe fireplace, and an activity space for games and entertainment. Surrounding this open floor plan are private bedrooms that have a private bathroom and handicappedaccessible shower., and wall-to-wall windows on one side.

As inviting as the bedrooms are, the Sycamore team aims to get the residents out of their rooms and engaged. According to Mr. Molfetta, “The goal here is to provide a fulfilling and meaningful experience. Our team leads with their heart which helps create the right culture and environment for our residents to succeed”. Sycamore has invested in their communities so residents can enjoy high quality amenities in the convenience of their own neighborhood. “We’ve created a luxury health care environment where hospitality meets healthcare”, says Molfetta. Sycamore residents enjoy a wide range of services, including a full theater experience with surround sound, an aquatic therapy pool, a game of bocce in the outside courtyard, or a round of pool in the game room. There is also a beauty salon/barbershop offering spa services, and a full service bar / lounge for socializing and entertainment.

A final unique feature of Sycamore Living is its incorporation of technology into its residents’ daily lives. They believe residents are happiest when they stay connected to those they love. The Lifestyle Engagement team provides education to resident and families on the use of devices such as Amazon Alexa and other web-based technologies. “Even before the pandemic, we had put Amazon Alexa onto every nightstand to ensure our residents can see and speak to those they care about wheneverthey want” says Molfetta. As a Wellness Community, Sycamore takes the health of its residents very seriously: “We’ve partnered with Atlantic Health System and are well-located between Morristown and RWJ Barnabas Medical Centers. We have credentialed M.D.s on staff and skilled nursing care on the premises 24/7.”

Dressing Up Your Windows! By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

F

or more than 85 years, Metropolitan Window Fashions has provided window dressings for residential homes in northern New Jersey. Initially established in 1934, the family-owned business has spanned three generations. The core mission–to provide quality products and services–has remained intact since its inception. Currently led by Bruce Heyman, the grandson of the founder, Metropolitan is New Jersey’s largest independent retailer of custom window fashions. Metropolitan’s stores display beautiful fabrics and custom window fashions of all styles. All locations have the designation of Hunter Douglas Gallery Centurion dealer–the highest level possible. According to Heyman, “Hunter Douglas only sells through independent dealers; you cannot buy their product online or at a big box store.” The showrooms provide a variety of custom draperies, blinds, shutters, motorized shades, and reupholstery. To assist clients with their selections, Metropolitan offers a free in-home decorating service.

Bruce Heyman Their 30 employees, eight decorators, and five installers are available to design, prepare, customize, and install the finished product. “Unlike the box stores and other competitors, we have the right-sized, knowledgeable staff that can deliver our services from design to installation,” states Heyman. Metropolitan has received numerous local and national business awards for its quality products and services. Remarks Heyman, “Awards are nice, but we want our customers to be happy. That is why we are here–this is a service business.”

Main Street Move Bears Fruit The Pink Pear is Now Twice As Nice! By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein

T

he ever-popular Madison boutique The Pink Pear’s recent move to Main Street is already seeing the benefits, says owner Christine Kosakowski.

Not only has the more-visible location in the center of town increased foot traffic, but The Pink Pear is now twice its former size, allowing more room for social distancing as customers return to in-store shopping. The larger space can also accommodate expansion of some of the shop’s most popular lines, such as Mud Pie’s fun and functional tabletop items and Spantina’s attractive jewelry and handbags. Kosakowski has added new lines to The Pink Pear’s collection, and will showcase holiday gift items including: ornaments, family games, tabletop items, clothing and accessories. She notes that two gift trends that started last year are expected to be popular again. “Back again this year will be The Corkcicle cigar glass, which sold out, and had two waiting lists,” she said. And the perfect “comfort gift” are the Nordic Beach Body Wraps, just right for snuggling into on a cold winter night. The Pink Pear is already offering delivery and curbside pick-up to accommodate customers’ safety concerns, but Kosakowki added, “If someone wants to arrange for a private shopping appointment, after hours, or on a closing day, we can do that as well.” Yet another modern shopping option: FaceTime, she said.

WEATHERING

amily-owned clothing company Mixology is open and ready for business in its original location in the heart of Livingston. Founded in response to the 2008 recession, the company’s name, Mixology, “…recognizes mixing and matching of price points,” owner and founder Jordan Edwards asserts. Edwards and his sister, Gabrielle Edwards, vice president and head buyer, wanted to create a boutique shopping experience where customers would have access to the latest trends and styles at mixed price points without making lengthy trips to the mall. WEATHERING the STORM continued from page 20

When the COVID pandemic hit earlier this year, Mixology, along with every other retail store in the country, was forced to shutter their doors and furlough many of their employees. Forward-thinking and already equipped with a user-friendly website, Mixology was ready to pivot at a moment’s notice: “Our website is really what sustained us. We kept on all of our senior management and our fulfillment team and we were able to pivot the whole company from being a brick and mortar company to be an online company,” Edwards proclaims. As Mixology shifted to an online platform, many local customers wondered when and if the beloved local boutique would open back up in town. The reality is, Mixology never left: “One reason why people thought we were not coming back was that we took out all of the clothing for over a week and we sprayed the store with hospital-grade disinfectant,” Edwards explains. New Jersey shoppers can rest assured that Mixology is open, they have brought back all of their employees, and they are overjoyed to remain a stronghold in such a supportive community.

SHOW YOUR

BEST YOU

H

ow you present yourself online is critical, especially in these days of the pandemic,” says photographer Dan Epstein. Whether it’s a business website, online meeting, or presence in social media marketing, most people agree that a first impression is key. “No kidding”, he adds, “you get, like, two seconds to capture someone’s attention before you lose them to a click through. The photograph of you simply has to be engaging, and able to show the best part of you.” With over three decades of experience shooting for some of America’s biggest magazines, Fortune 500 companies, as well as many local small businesses, Epstein can do just that: take a

photograph that presents you or your business in your best light. Whether you call it a business portrait, or a headshot, after a scheduled telephone or FaceTime meeting, he will come to your location, or someplace else you choose, with the appropriate photo gear and COVID safety measures, and make a series of photographs to make sure that you have a selection of excellent alternatives to choose from. Many clients are so pleased

with the results that they choose multiple different portraits for their marketing and social media efforts. You can preview a selection of his work on his website and reach him through it as well. Go ahead, contact him, it’s time to put your best face forward.

potheco Pharmacy offers dermatology expertise along with their usual pharmacy services. “We are leaders in Dermatology drug care and that clinical focus allows us to offer services that other pharmacies simply cannot,” states Ronak Desai, Chief strategy officer and Co-founder. Apotheco Pharmacy differentiates themselves by offering patients many options for the treatment of acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, sun damage and fungal infections but where the pharmacy truly stands out is in its ability to offer customized solutions for their patients and providers. “We treat each customer as an individual patient. At our core we believe that when it comes to patient care one size does not fit all. Pets in Need of a Forever Home Dudley Needs Love

Say Hi to a Friendly Guy

Dudley has been at the shelter for almost a year and is very stressed with kennel life. He practically grew up there. He has done amazing in foster, living with nine other dogs and two kids. He does great with all dogs big and small. He loves all people and does well with older children. He is wonderful in the car! Growing up in the shelter, Dudley has never had structure and boundaries. But he is very intelligent and takes direction well. He needs a leader to teach him right from wrong. He would love nothing more then to find the perfect family who will work with him, love and cherish him forever!

Thor is a 7 year-old 48 lb. mixed breed. He is a friendly guy who loves attention. He is house-broken, has a low-medium energy level, walks nicely on a leash, and enjoys being outside. Thor can be a bit nervous when left alone so he prefers to have his people around more often than not. He takes treats gently and has the cutest ears! Cuddles on the couch are his favorite. Once he forms trust he gives lots of kisses and loves getting some in return! Fill out an application on their website.

Enhancing Homes with New and Improved Decks, Gazebos, Patios, Porches and Roofing Systems By Cathy Harvey

D

eck Guardian specializes in building maintenancefree decks, upgrading and resurfacing existing decks, and the installation of gazebos, patios, porches, and Louvered Roofing Systems. The company’s website states that Deck Guardian is “dedicated to always using the most innovative technologies to deliver unique long-last decks to our customers.” Deck Guardian partners with trusted decking brands including Trex, Azek, and Fiberon and among its innovative construction methods is the use of steel helical piers that have three to five times more load capacities than traditional cement footings. The company is registered and insured and provides warranties on all its services. Owner Ion Colbasiuc, launched the business in 2015 after working for ten years in the industry. He wanted to

create a company that could help a wide swath of homeowners. He notes that, before their entrance into the industry, “Deck contractors in New Jersey either did only “super high-end decks” in the $100,000.00 plus range or were “jacks-of-all trades” who lacked specific experience and knowledge of deck construction.” Deck Guardian provides top-notch service and addresses the needs of all homeowners–those with small projects and those with large, elaborate ones. The majority of their customers live in single-family homes and, according to Colbasiuc, “Decks are a great addition to the house, creating an extra room and adding the space everyone needs to be able to use and enjoy the outdoors.” Colbasiuc explains that the Covid pandemic was an “eyeopener” with requests doubling when customers realized how important it is to have a space where the family can relax and enjoy its backyard space. Deck Guardian built over 300 decks in 2020 and is on target to build another 100 by the end of the year. He anticipates an even bigger increase in the 2021 season, so he encourages homeowners to get ahead of the rush. Pricing for materials in the industry go up every few months and the sooner the project begins, the more money the homeowner will save.

One-Stop Dental Care By Susan Baldani, photos by Dan Epstein

D

r. Helen Chiu offers her patients not only general dentistry services in her Florham Park office, but more specialized procedures as well. Many other general dentists, she says, often refer their patients to specialists for complicated dental situations. But she has the training to perform these more specialized procedures herself. “I offer ‘one stop dental care’ where a range of services are provided, including many surgical procedures, root canal treatment, and adult shortterm orthodontia,” says Dr. Chiu. “This is all part of the practice; it’s a total experience. “If patients have any questions or concerns regarding their care, I can address it all. Because I do a lot of procedures, it’s fairly straightforward when it comes to diagnoses. I give my patients a lot of options for treatment, so they can make intelligent decisions.”

Dr. Chiu also takes her time with every patient. “All procedures are carefully explained so they know what’s coming. I think that’s helpful with managing anxiety. For patients who are very nervous, we put them on nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and/or can give them a sedative the night before.” Patient and staff safety is another top priority in her practice. Infection control has always been strongly enforced, so the new high-level safety guidelines were easy for them to meet with just a few adjustments, such as wearing N-95 masks. “People feel comfortable here,” says Dr. Chiu. “We treat our patients like family, and we try to be very conservative and do what’s in their best interests.”

OUR HOUSE HEROES A Time for Thanksgiving

O

ur House, a Murray Hill based nonprofit providing residential, day and support services for adult with disabilities, is forever grateful to the many heroes who rose to the top during the worst days of the pandemic and continue to do so. “When the pandemic hit we immediately went into crisis mode in order to keep our residents and staff safe and healthy,” says Michele DelCorsano, Our House President and CEO, “We identified what

During the pandemic staff picked up hundreds of homemade masks made by community members.

our immediate needs were, put out a plea for help and people from all walks of life stepped in.” Our House is bursting with heroes, many known by name but others quiet and anonymous. Heroes included Board Members who coordinated meals and birthday celebrations for the residential programs, community members who dropped off PPE supplies and provided hundreds of homemade masks and, of course, the Our House direct service professionals. A key factor in the limited number of COVID cases affecting Our House was that many staff moved into residential programs to limit the number of staff members rotating through the program – true heroes.

“On behalf of the Our House family, thank you to everyone who has helped thus far and who continue to help. I would like to invite others to join our list of heroes. In this season of thanks and giving, we hope people will consider supporting Our House,” continues DelCorsano. Late Fall 2020

Mental Health for the WHOLE Family Discovery Wellness Center Treats Parents and Children for a Wide Range of Issues By Deborah Schapiro

D

ivorce…Substance abuse… Domestic violence...Gender identity. Whatever the issue, Dr. Christopher Barker has seen it. Dr. Barker, a Ph.D. psychologist, is the owner and Executive Director of Discovery Wellness Center; he and his staff treat children and families for all sorts of issues affecting mental health. Established in 2015 as a complement to the Discovery Psychotherapy Center, the Morristown-based Discovery Wellness Center provides individual, group and family counseling. The multiple therapists on staff act as a team: For instance, family clients may be split up so that one parent sees one therapist, the other sees a second, and the child sees a third.

In addition to emotional issues, Discovery Wellness Center also helps with neurological and educational ones. Dr. Barker notes, “Undiagnosed learning issues can affect a child’s mental health as well as their performance in school. We do intelligence testing for both children and adults, as well assessments for issues ranging from dementia to ADD and ADHD.” He adds, “We’ve tried very hard to achieve a family-friendly environment, starting from the moment a client walks in. Our receptionists are very welcoming, and there are plenty of toys in the waiting room. One wall in the waiting room has a blackboard to draw on, and another has a big screen showing fun movies and videos.”

Dr. Christopher Barker As welcoming as the waiting room is for children, the Center’s payment policies are equally reassuring to adults. Dr. Barker says, “We operate on a sliding scale and work with most insurance companies.”

Row, Row, Row Your Bike! MAKING FITNESS FUN Barry Farber

By Barry Farber

H

ow do you keep in shape, not get bored and make your workouts fun? I’m a big believer in varying your workouts so you not only keep it interesting but utilize a variety of different muscles. I’ve been experimenting with all types of workouts over the years: using sixteen 2.5-pound rings on my arms while training in martial arts, attaching car tires to my waist and doing pull ups, etc. (see more @ barryfarberofficial). Being creative and using all types of devices around the house allows for a full body workout. Even taking out the garbage can be turned into a great exercise. One of my favorite fitness products is the RowBike that allows you to get the benefits of rowing with strength training and cardio at the

same time, but also the enjoyment of being outside and the mobility of a bike.

Do the exercises slow at first, use less weights, less repetitions. It’s also a better workout. Remember–slow you grow and fast never lasts.

Here are several things to think about when choosing a workout that impacts the entire body:

3. Keep in mind that the right posture and the right breathing are essential to all types of movement and training. The right breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and enhances your energy. The right posture makes sure your muscles are used properly and decreases fatigue.

1. Always try to look at exercises and movement that engages the legs, core and upper body. If you find those type of exercises that encompass a full body workout, it will save you time and include the benefits some muscle groups miss out on. 2. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise. Anytime you start a new exercise (consult your doctor if needed), keep in mind that when it comes to working out new parts of your body you should begin slowly.

There is never just one way to work out. As Bruce Lee said and I’ve mentioned many times in the past: “Collect what is useful, Discard what is not...and then Create your own style.”

“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” —Mark Twain
