Dear Sisters,
Another year has flown past and we are already in the midst of the holiday season. Whether you're celebrating at home or visiting friends and family, I hope each of you has a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year. We're now wrapping up the Danish Sisterhood News' 75 years of publication and look forward to continuing the Danish Sisterhood News for many years to come. Throughout the history of the newsletter, it has had many looks and changes in content. We've published stories from lodges and members, photos from travels to Denmark and photos of member events. We've added a digital version of the newsletter and have on occasion been able to print the hard copy in color. There have been numerous, dedicated editors, and I've been proud to serve as one of those editors for seven years now.
It's also important to remember that the Danish Sisterhood News wouldn't exist without our members and their contributions. Please remember to keep contributing, as the DSN is made by and for the members! Let's continue sharing our news and updates with one another to celebrate our Danish history and heritage. Merry Christmas to all of you and I look forward to hearing from you in the new year.
Until next year,
Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor editor@danishsisterhood.com
Youth Birthdays
Resolution: Doris M. Hawks Johansen
Doris M. Hawks Johansen passed away in her home, on October 22, 2022, age 98. Her twin sisters Judy and Joy and Compassus caregivers enabled Doris to remain at home, per her wishes. Services were at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery.
Doris was born April 11, 1924 to H.B. and Vera Smith Hawks. She married Wesley "Wes" Johansen on September 2, 1944. He preceded her in death on October 8, 1983.
Doris was a member and long time Treasurer of Danish Sisterhood, Lodge #3 Davenport, Iowa. She was a very good cook and will be remembered for her Danish Sweet Rolls and for the candy so many of us enjoyed at recent conventions. Many of us were recipients of birthday carnations and wishes over the years. At age 90 Doris was still driving some of our Lodge #3 members to meetings and a very good, reliable driver she was.
She dearly loved anything Danish and promoted our Lodge and all things Danish with a true and loving heart, always ready to help with any thing to do with the Sisterhood. We will miss her greatly.
She retired as manager of Fannie May Candy, Moline, IL in 2004 and was former tax assessor and election judge in Bowling Township.
She was a member of the Preemption United Methodist Church. Doris lived on Coyne Center Road for 83 consecutive years.
Above all, Doris loved spending time with her family. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Judy Johansen, Milan; daughter, Judy (Mark) Winters, Milan; grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Joy Bleuer, Milan; and Judy Williamson; Rock Island.
Doris was preceded in death by parents, husband Wes; son, James "Jim" Johansen and his two infant daughters, son-in-law Mark Winters; sister, Jean; and 3 brothers-in-law.

2022 NE/CO District Meeting
After three years, the Danish sisters of Omaha Lodge #6, Denver Lodge #21, Lincoln Lodge #90, and Grand Island Lodge #113 were able to meet for the NE/CO District Convention held in Dannebrog, Nebraska. Coffee, juice, and various sweets were available for everyone to enjoy. Tim Hannibal, a resident of Dannebrog, welcomed us to his town. After the attending members of both the brotherhood and sisterhood introduced themselves, they broke into two groups for their respective meetings.
District President Vicki Bousquet called the meeting to order and had the group recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Past President Donna Hansen placed the heart on the open Constitution and read a paragraph from the Constitution. Vicki welcomed the group; it was said that “we're small, but we're mighty.” Regular business was covered.
A memorial service was held by Lodge # 113 for eight members of the sisterhood:. Lodge #21 read resolutions for members Judith Lorraine (Mathisen) Mountfort and Joyce McCough. Lodge #90 read resolutions for members Mike Bousquet, Linda Butcher, Arla May Hansen, Marie Johnson, and Edie Montgomery. Lodge #113 read the resolution for Delores “Dee” Battles. They will all be greatly missed.
The Lodge reports were read from Lodge #6, Lodge #21, Lodge #90, and Lodge #113. The group voted to give donations to DAAL, Danish American Archives and Library, in Blair, and to Columbia Hall in Dannebrog, Nebraska. National Trustee Linda Holz spoke to our group. She updated us on national the national news of the Danish Sisterhood. Linda reminded us of the National DSS Convention being held October 5 – 7, 2023, in Bloomington, Minnesota. She brought Butikken items that were available for purchase after the meeting.
Our slate of officers for 2022 – 2023, is as follows:
Past President Vicki Bousquet, Lodge #90
President Joanna Christensen, Lodge #21
Vice President Ethel Jergensen Evans, Lodge #21
Secretary Chris Rindone, Lodge #6
Treasurer Donna Hansen, Lodge #90
Trustee Edie Grim, Lodge #113
Marshall Donna Honoré, Lodge #90
Correspondent Fran Freeman, Lodge #90
Historian Donna Christensen Thomas, Lodge #90
District President Vicki Bousquet thanked Lodge #113 for hosting the meeting in Dannebrog and everyone for attending the convention. The meeting was adjourned.
Our lunch consisted of sandwiches from Subway as well as salads and desserts. We were entertained by a performance from the Clogging Connection from Grand Island and by the St. Marks Upstairs Church Women doing the skit “Church Ladies in the Basement.”
There was a little time in between entertainment and the banquet to walk across the street to partake in sodas and many ice cream flavors at Dannebrog Delights, LLC. Many took advantage of this opportunity; it also gave us time to catch up with everyone and share ideas between the lodges.
Five baskets were auctioned off. The experience of being a part of a live auction was enjoyed by all. The total of the live auction and silent auction brought in almost $1,000; these proceeds go to the District.
The NE/CO District Convention banquet followed. We enjoyed delicious Danish food prepared by Whitefoot Catering; dessert was ice cream provided by Tim Hannibal. Harriet Neilsen gave closing remarks.

Wishing everyone a Merry christmas and a happy new year
