One advantage of teaching a small seminar to first-year Vic students is that you can invite each student to come to your office to retrieve the first essay and chat for a bit near the beginning of the course. That’s how I learned how Vic student, Vanda, commutes (we’ll call her that since I’ve never taught a Vanda). She lives far north of the city, gets a drive to the end of the subway, and travels the rest of the way via public transit.

It’s a commute five days a week, since she has classes every day. When we added up the hours, she spends as much time travelling as she does in class—a combined total of at least 30 hours every week. As we talked, she was concerned that she wouldn’t have time to participate in any other activity beyond studying—an anxiety common among commuter students. Her university places of learning were, thus far, restricted to classrooms alone.

I’ve been thinking recently about the importance of place in learning. With the rapid development of educational technologies, it is no longer just an imaginary world in which one gains a university degree without leaving the desk in one’s bedroom with its screen and internet connection. Tuition is paid by online banking; and in this world, one can even print off the diploma to hang on the bedroom wall. Perhaps such solitary, techno-centric learning can work for some kinds of topics, but it seems an impoverished way to become a truly educated person.

We are blessed at Vic with a strong sense of place. Although the University of Toronto is one of the continent’s largest urban universities, the college system creates places for communities, and Victoria’s property and architecture form a veritable oasis in a busy city. The Richardsonian Romanesque Old Vic and the clean, modernist Pratt library, the solidity of stone and slate, the green of ivy, all speak of an enduring community that attends to form and beauty. In the classrooms you can find blackboards, whiteboards and the latest IT equipment; wireless connections are available in our common spaces, study and eating areas. But the quality of place matters, for it makes possible the benefits of belonging to a community, and enhances all the interactions of learning.

This fall we celebrated the opening of the newest space at Vic, the Goldring Student Centre, funded by $10 million from alumni donations and a $7-million contribution from students.

Full of light and reflecting the architectural features of Charles Street—including the ivycovered walls of Burwash and the Isabel Bader Theatre—the Goldring Student Centre has handsome places for VUSAC offices, club and society rooms, Ned’s Café, formal committee rooms and informal lounges, and quiet study space. The building is student-focused and student-related and houses the office of the dean of students, and because current students will eventually be alumni, the office of alumni affairs is on the third floor. As much learning as in any classroom will transpire in the Goldring Student Centre, in happenstance conversation and in the non-credit (and therefore stress-free) programmed discussions with faculty and alumni, overseen by the dean.

Attending to the significance of architectural places for learning won’t in itself guarantee success, but it certainly does help to attract students, and expresses the value we place on the whole of their experience at Vic. This fall Vanda, and those like her without a strong sense of place, will have the opportunity to inhabit and enjoy a splendid building which is more than physical space. The Goldring Student Centre will be a place of intersection for all those activities and interactions beyond the formal curriculum that make for a truly educated person. 

Goldie proved an astute negotiator during his presidency. He led negotiations with U of T on several fronts at once. Navigating Change from Gutenberg to Google Chief Librarian Robert C. Brandeis Retires Robert C. Brandeis, Victoria University’s chief librarian since 1977, retired on August 31, 2013. Brandeis completed his PhD in English at the University of Leicester, his MLS at the University of Toronto and was chief librarian of Huron College, University of Western Ontario, before joining Vic. Over the course of Brandeis’s 36-year career at Vic, immense change occurred as the world moved away from the printing press and into the digital age. Brandeis helped successfully navigate this seismic shift in how information is accessed on campus and created a Victoria University Library that consistently remained in the vanguard of a successful library model. “University libraries have seen large changes since Bob Brandeis first came to Vic,” says President Paul Gooch.

“Under his leadership, the E.J. Pratt Library has become a model undergraduate library, and renowned for its world-class special collections. Coming generations of researchers and students will be indebted to him for his careful stewardship and development of these priceless resources.”

Brandeis has helped realize an immense on-line presence for the user, in addition to building, enhancing, and promoting Vic’s 300,000 volumes and more than 90 named special collections. These world-renowned collections include E.J. Pratt, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Virginia Woolf, William

Blake, Northrop Frye Vic 3T3, Emm 3T6 and Norman Jewison Vic 4T9. Thanks to the leadership of Brandeis, along with his dedicated staff, more than 3,000 digital items and objects are also available online as part of Vic’s Digital Collections, and the Robert Brandeis in the E.J. Pratt Library.

Victoria University Archives boasts a robust on-line presence to show off its collection that dates back to 1836.

In 2001 Brandeis helped oversee a major renovation of the E.J. Pratt Library—the first of its kind since its opening in 1960. This multi-year process saw an increase in computer infrastructure, smart classrooms and study space—something that continued to be well-managed under Brandeis over the past decade—to accommodate student and technological demands. Lisa Sherlock was named Brandeis’s successor as of September 1.  Please see page 13 for a special Faculty Forum by Robert Brandeis.

Orientation Convocation The incoming Victoria College class was welcomed at September’s Orientation Convocation and a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, conferred upon Izzeldin Abuelaish.

He dedicated the honour to his late wife and three daughters, and “the innocent.” In his speech to the incoming class, he challenged them to dream big and never underestimate themselves. “Go in confidence, the world is awaiting you,” he said. “Have hope, have faith and take action.”

Abuelaish is an internationally recognized proponent of peace, especially between Palestinians and Israelis. He sees health and health care as a bridge to peace.

He has worked with many international organizations in areas of conflict, and his goal is to end suffering through creating working partnerships to foster forgiveness and reconciliation between communities in conflict.

Motivated by the horrific death of his three daughters and niece during the 2009 Gaza War, Abuelaish published his 2010 book, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey. This acclaimed book underlines how medicine is a human equalizer and that doctors can be messengers for peace. It has been translated into 20 languages.

Abuelaish was born, raised and educated in a refugee camp of the Gaza Strip. Thanks to a scholarship, he studied medicine at Cairo University, then specialized in obstetrics and gynecology (University of London) and completed his residency at Israel’s Soroka University. He also holds a Master in Public Health from Harvard University. He was the first Palestinian doctor to receive an appointment in medicine at an Israeli hospital. He joined U of T’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health (Global Health Division) in 2009 where his research interests include global public health, women’s health, and conflict and peace.

Abuelaish’s commitment to peace, justice and human rights has earned him audiences with politicians around the world and a myriad of honours, including appointment to the Order of Ontario in 2012. He currently lives in Toronto with his five children. 

An Expansion, a Renovation, a Destination The Goldring Student Centre Officially Opens its Doors Hundreds gathered outside the Goldring Student Centre on September 25 to celebrate the official opening of the building.

The beautiful weather allowed for an outdoor ceremony with a brass quintet and a lively reception.

The project was made possible by a lead donation from siblings Blake and Judy Goldring Vic 8T1 and 8T8 respectively, who were on hand with their families to cut the red ribbon.

Victoria’s students pledged one-third of the capital project’s costs and alumni contributed an additional $6 million, including a $1-million gift generously donated by Chancellor Wendy Cecil Vic 7T1. “This splendid lead gift from Blake and Judy inspired a major contribution from our students, and with their assistance and the generosity of others, especially our chancellor, we now have a wonderful place that encourages all those activities and interactions that make up a wellrounded education,” says President Paul Gooch. “We’re truly, deeply grateful.”

President Paul Gooch announced a $1-million gift to the Goldring Student Centre from Chancellor Wendy Cecil Vic 7T1 during his remarks at the official opening on September 25. The Wendy Marion Cecil Atrium, named in recognition of this generous gift, is a bright and inviting two-storey space that overlooks the new quadrangle.

“I was a commuter student, so I spent a lot of time in this building doing homework,” says Cecil. “We all have our own reasons for supporting the University, and it is particularly inspiring to see that Vic alumni and students also have that same focus on supporting future generations.”

The transformation of the old Wymilwood building, which first opened in 1951, began with the preservation of existing iconic features—such as the cantilevered staircase and corrugated roof—and ended with a transformational glass and stone addition, for a grand total of 40,000 square feet of new and renovated space for students and staff. Guests were invited to view the new donor wall and tour the building with its many remarkable features and spaces. The building runs along the north side of Charles Street West and houses meeting spaces, a casual study lounge, Ned’s Café, The Cat’s Eye and entertainment centre, student commons, a commuter lounge, an outdoor patio and quadrangle and several hundred feet of student and administrative space. The addition of an elevator that reaches all floors makes the entire building accessible and the sunken garden and two green roofs provide additional sustainable spaces to Victoria’s campus. The Goldring Student Centre will be the heart of campus life— a welcome new home for students. 

100 BURWASH HALL AT

IF GARGOYLES COULD TALK

I

t has been home to future prime ministers, ambassadors, world-famous actors, philosophers, authors and theologians. Publicly opened in 1913, Burwash Dining Hall and its original residences—North, Middle, Gate and South House—are 100 years old. Construction began in 1909, upon receipt of a letter from Chester D. Massey indicating the family’s philanthropic intent to “erect and furnish for the College a men’s residence to accommodate 100 students.” Shortly thereafter, a building committee was announced and the architects Sproatt and Rolph were hired. The residences were to be modeled after those in Oxford and Cambridge. The entire structure would be named in honour of the then chancellor and president of Victoria University, Nathanael Burwash.

The building was completed in 1913 and W.A. Craik of The Globe described Burwash as “possessing all the architectural attractiveness and charm of an old English College.” He noted correctly that Burwash was “here to stay; [it] will doubtless accommodate generations of students through many years and perhaps through several centuries.”

In honour of Burwash throughout the century, Vic Report asked former residents of the upper houses to share memories and reminiscences about what life was like for those living and eating at Burwash.

On a weekly basis, Burwash diners eat approximately 1100 pounds of Niagara apples, 660 litres of milk, 160 loaves of bread, 400 pounds of dry cereal, 1000 litres of ice cream, 6800 eggs, 4500 litres of soup, 1200 pounds of lettuce, 280 pounds of carrots, 215 pounds of cheese, 300 pounds of pasta and 8000 cookies.

“[Vincent] Massey wanted the neo-Gothic residence to reflect the spirit of Oxford, from which he had just returned. [Lester B.] Pearson objected. He said Burwash Hall was founded in 1912, not 1412, that it was filled with Canadian boys, not English lads, and that it would have to develop its own traditions, not import them. When Massey insisted students wear gowns at dinner, Pearson and his classmates wore sweaters.

A staggering amount has changed since the opening of Burwash Dining Hall.

By the mid-1980s, Burwash Dining Hall—originally built to feed the 350 men who resided on campus—was starting to show its age and was in need of a facelift.

The renovation would be revolutionary in more ways than one. It would include the installation of modern amenities such as a sound system, hotel-style dumb waiters and a custom tray elevator to return china to the kitchen, and it would invite women— hundreds of them—to dinner every day.

During WWI, Burwash Dining Hall and Residence were used by the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

The Canadian Army was housed here in WWII. A wooden propeller in the dining hall commemorates this service.

“I lived in Annesley during my first two years at Vic, starting in 1986. It was just before the food services were amalgamated into Burwash. Like many female residents I loved the atmosphere of our cozy dining room at Annesley, so conducive to camaraderie and late night conversation. But when I had my first meal at Burwash, I was captivated by the beauty of the light, airy space. It was during Orientation Week and I was a member of the executive. The men and women on the committee ate together at the long tables while plotting the day’s hijinks.

Some students were opposed to sharing a dining hall, especially from the women’s residences. They were concerned that so many people packed together would be too crowded and too rushed to allow for that second cup of coffee. As the news editor of The Strand, I covered their opposition, which went all the way up to the Board of Regents. But other residents, including me, felt that it would be fun for all of us to eat under one roof. Once the move happened, others fell in love with the new space as I did, and the women certainly made it their own.”

Each day Burwash Hall prepares 1400 to 1600 meals for students and faculty. The space underwent major changes two years ago. With a growing student body with increasingly diverse needs, the goal was to balance modernization with the preservation of the architectural heritage of the building. Chef Nathanael Barratt, only the fifth chef to work at Burwash, notes: “The new food-station concept affords us the opportunity to boast a broader range of food choices, including vegan and Halal. The diversity in offerings has grown tremendously over the past 10 years. We try to create menus that are globally influenced, much like our student population.”

WHO WAS NATHANAEL BURWASH? Former Victoria Chancellor and Ambassador Kenneth Taylor Vic 5T7 and actor Donald Sutherland Vic 5T8 outside of South House in 1998, their former residence. “Study and enrich your life in class. Let your life unfold in South House,” says Taylor.

“It was a fabulous time. Crowded, to be sure, but fabulous.

It was jammed. Even the single rooms were doubles.

They had bunkbeds. It was the post-war period and there were an enormous number of vets. Gate House was a mix of people in their first year out of high school and those who were in their first year out of the war. All those vets who were supposed to pretend that life was normal and act like a bunch of high school kids after all they had been through, after all the terrible things they had seen.

They had a few problems adjusting. They were trying to pick up their lives and expected to behave normally and not get into mischief. Well, sometimes they did. My room was in the tower and if some of the boys came home late after curfew they would call up to me and I had to throw my key down to let them in. It was an interesting experience and a good one. We got along extremely well.

I was so homesick at first. But I stayed and it took until after Christmas for Burwash to feel like home and for me to want to stay. The staff was so kind and that helped a lot. And the food was good, too. Sure, there were complaints, but it was excellent, really. We weren’t rationed anymore, although it was still controlled. Some of the boys used to get upset over the intake control, particularly over the milk! I think we were allowed only two glasses. Well, one morning I woke up to hear a ‘moo!’ Turns out, one of the boys brought two cows down from his farm (see cover image). He brought those cows right into the dining hall as breakfast was going full tilt as a form of protest over the milk control! Their complaints got heard all right, but I don’t think they were allowed any more milk!”

He was a Methodist minister, theologian, educator and author. Burwash was born in 1839, near St. Andrews, Lower Canada, and graduated from Victoria College— then located in Cobourg, Ontario—in 1859. He won the Prince of Wales medal, and subsequently became an ordained minister. He returned to teach at Victoria College in 1867 and received his M.A. the same year.

Committed to lifelong education, Burwash received his bachelor of theology in 1871 and assumed the chair of theology at Victoria College. After achieving his doctorate, he helped establish a faculty of theology at Victoria. He saw his vision realized in 1873 and was named dean. Under the guidance and leadership of President Samuel Sobieski Nelles Vic 1862, Burwash continued to be committed to transforming Nathanael Burwash photographed in 1906. education in Ontario; by 1884 negotiations were formally underway to establish federation with the University of Toronto, and the Federation Act itself was passed in April 1887.

In 1900, following Nelles’s death, Burwash became chancellor and president of Victoria University, which had by then moved from Cobourg to Toronto. In 1909, construction began on what would eventually be Burwash Dining Hall and its residences. The building was completed and opened as part of the ceremonies that marked Burwash’s retirement in 1913.

The two of them could be seen in the dining hall at mealtimes, always dressed in white. Ms Hewson wore what looked like a lab coat.

Lunch was served cafeteria style, but dinner was a sitdown meal with service provided. Early in my first year at Burwash, there appeared a waitress who was clearly our contemporary, and who was also very attractive.

Naturally, her presence excited considerable interest.

All members of a given house would eat together at the same long table in hall. Once a table was chosen, it remained unchanged for the rest of the school year. Each waitress served one table and one table only. The house members at the table who were served by the goodlooking newcomer on her first evening of work no doubt considered themselves blessed. The students of another house, however, decided that the following evening, they would seize the initiative and move to that table in order to be served by her. They did this by arriving early for hall. Very soon after that, someone arranged to have her serve a different table. I am sure those who had switched tables were disappointed, but the rest of the students found the turn of events hugely satisfying, and the hall erupted in a real cacophony of laughter and tablethumping. I remember the look of utter consternation on this woman’s face when she heard the deafening din.

I was also at Burwash when its 50th anniversary was celebrated. The prime minster of Canada at the time, Lester Pearson Vic 1T9, had been at Burwash, and he gave a speech for the occasion at Convocation Hall.

Before the speech, however, everyone in Burwash got to meet him. I was impressed by the fact that he did not seem to use a stock phrase for everyone he met, but rather showed a genuine interest in each person. In my case, he asked about some of my distant relatives named Moorhouse who were, or had been, United Church ministers. Pearson, of course, was the son of a Methodist minister. He seemed very approachable and affable.”

Two of the 27 men in this 1914 Gate House composite were killed during WWl military action—Ross Taylor (1916) and Joseph Reginald ‘Reg.’ Adams Vic 1T6 (1917). Taylor, who was in his third year at Vic, became the first Victoria casualty of this war.

“I have many memories of living at Vic. It was great fun to be part of the revival of the Bob Revue during the mid to late 70s. We rented tuxes from the early 1900s and performed several shows a year as the Bob Quartet, thus reviving a practice of the 30s and 40s. We performed barber-shop, quartet-style music that was passed on to us by the original members, including a chorus in pseudo Latin and limerick-style verses that lampooned current Vic personalities and events, something we enjoyed writing every year.

As a former student of the Faculty of Music, I obviously have musical memories such as playing trombone for Vic musicals, including Guys and Dolls at Hart House; and playing in the newly-formed 1972 Vic Stage Band, we entertained for dances and events.

We practised in Wymilwood’s Music Room and got to perform all over the campus and beyond, including the Vic Pub and a Brunswick House talent night.

In addition to music, I had some great athletic experiences with the inter-house hockey games played on the outdoor rink next to Marg Ad and winning two Mulock Cups (1974 and 1976) for football. The cup is Canada’s oldest, continuously awarded sports trophy and is presented to the winning U of T inter-faculty football team. What made it even more special was that my dad won the Mulock Cup in 1938 playing for the Faculty of Medicine just before he graduated and headed off to serve in the Royal Navy as an on-board medical officer in the North Atlantic campaign.”

Ernest Chan Vic 8T8 has published his second book, Algorithmic Trading: Winning Strategies and Their Rationale (Wiley).

Frank Barrett Vic 5T8 has written One Family’s Africa: The two-year sojourn of a young Canadian family. Along with over 200 colour photographs, the story recounts the adventures—including tropical diseases, snakes, a military coup and a safari— of a Canadian family living in the tropical high forest of Ghana, West Africa. Julie Cruikshank Vic 6T7 professor emerita of anthropology at the University of British Columbia has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Cruikshank’s research in northern Canada has helped to preserve the history of indigenous peoples.

Fred Dawkins Vic 6T7 has received a contract from Dundurn Press to write a series entitled The Entrepreneurial Edge.

Will Fripp Vic 9T2 recently acted as historical consultant and contributed as a member of the design team for www.spiesintheshadows.com, a Canadian web-based high school history curriculum supplement. The site explores intelligence and espionage in Canadian history and introduces spies who assisted in Canada’s national development from the War of 1812 and into the Cold War. Alex K. Gigeroff Vic 5T2 has written and illustrated a book entitled The Sky and Stars Dance Too (Aleksamdro Publishing). It is the story of two children who visit their grandparents and their young dog Eli. Katie Keir Vic 0T8 won the 2012 Kenneth R. Wilson award for Best New Journalist. The award was created to recognize the achievements of a young journalist new to the B2B publishing industry.

Harry Neale Vic 6T0, longtime NHL broadcaster and former Varsity Blues men’s hockey player, entered the Hockey Hall of Fame as the 2013 winner of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. For three years, Neale played as a top defenceman on the Varsity Blues hockey team (1957–1960). As assistant captain, he helped the Blues to the 1958–1959 OQAA title.

Neale previously coached the Detroit Red Wings and served as general manager and head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, along with jobs in the WHA and NCAA. He joined Hockey Night in Canada as an analyst in 1986, and was a commentator for two World Cups and three Olympics. He has spent the last six seasons as an analyst on Buffalo Sabres broadcasts. Neale joined Leafs TV to be the colour commentator for Leaf games on Leafs TV for the 2013–2014 season.

Caitlin Kelly Vic 7T9, a writer living in Tarrytown, NY, had her 2011 memoir of working retail, Malled: My Unintentional Career in Retail published in China in July 2013 (Citic Press).

With a new cover and title in China, it is called The Greatest Saleswoman in the World.

Steve Paikin Vic 8T1, host of TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin, has been named chancellor of Laurentian University, the second chancellor in its history. As well, he has written Paikin and the Premiers: Personal Reflections on a Half Century of Ontario Leaders [Dundurn].

Part cookbook and part culinary history, this book contextualizes Arab cuisine in a rich tapestry of trade and conquests, royal tables, and poetic praise of fine food.

Suzanne Sutherland Vic 0T9 has published her first book, When We Were Good (Sumach Press), a young adult novel.

Marion Warnica Vic 0T6, a reporter for CBC Edmonton, was the recipient of a Roving Reporter Bursary from the Gordon Sinclair Foundation. The bursary supports a major research and reporting trip by an early-career Canadian journalist. Warnica’s research will focus on the impact of climate change on Peruvian water resources.

This project will also investigate what water stress looks like, how it can happen and how government is preparing for these changes.

Forensic Brandeis Investigations: Adventures of a Chief Librarian

by robert c. brandeis It would be appropriate, looking back at a career of 36 years as chief librarian at Victoria University, to contemplate the many changes which occurred during that time. It is tempting to consider the effect of ‘automation’ and ‘information technology’ on the library world, indeed on all of society: changes from library card catalogues to computer-based searching; from some 30 staff using Polaroid cameras to capture printed data, to less than a fifth that number processing similar amounts of material; to a reminder when ‘word processing’ was a fancy phrase for typewriting and when digital referred to using one’s fingers.

We can be sure of the certainty of change, what is uncertain is what a telephone call or an e-mail may bring into the daily administrative and academic routine. Shortly after my arrival at Vic, I received a panicked call with information that certain historical pamphlets dealing with First Nations peoples were missing from the United Church Archives (then on the Vic campus). Consultation with police authorities and other libraries revealed that thefts had occurred at libraries and archives along Highway 401 from Windsor to Kingston.

The culprit was apprehended but not before selling over $100,000 worth of books, pamphlets and prints into the Canadian antiquarian book trade. Because of his family connections, he was given a discharge by the courts with the admonition to “stay away from archives for two years.” To this day, valuable prints which he ‘liberated’ from libraries and archives grace the walls of major corporate offices.

Years later I was involved in another case with a very different result. A U of T part-time student slightly altered the spelling of his name on an identification card, borrowed books from campus libraries, including Vic’s, and didn’t return them.

He even used interlibrary loan services at York University to borrow books from major research libraries including the Library of Congress. I met with detectives at the local police division and since I had a name, an address, and a list of many of the ‘missing’ items, they had to act. The detectives needed a van to recover all the books hidden under beds and in closets.

This time the judge had a very different and enlightened attitude. The late provincial court Justice Robert Dnieper rightly admonished the accused for depriving students, scholars and researchers of library materials needed for their studies. He told the accused that he would “serve jail time”— and indeed he did. He was also required to pay restitution for materials not recovered and for several years afterwards, cheques would arrive periodically at the library from the court.

Another call to “look at books for the Vic library” came from the heir of a long-retired newspaper editor who asked to be driven to a suburban storage locker to “see the books.”

The locker was the size of a two-car garage with all the floor area covered with boxes, some stacked four and five high.

Some, but not all, were of interest and the damp dirt floor had ruined many.

I was then directed to drive to a nearby condominium building and led to a three-bedroom, three-bathroom unit.

Books piled in the bathtubs was certainly a new experience!

The collector had also stacked mounds of newspapers throughout the apartment and though these had been removed, trails worn in the carpets leading from room to room revealed the narrow confines of the living space between the newspaper cliffs. A convoy of vehicles from Friends of the Library helped transport books back to Vic (some still in bags from Coles Book Shop 10-cent sales from the 1960s) and these eventually found their way into library collections and into the annual Vic book sale.

And then there was Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658) and the cigarette boat. The high-speed power boat nestled on its trailer greeted me as I arrived at a large, old lakefront cottage near Perth, Ontario, about 350 km from Toronto. The book collection I had been asked to look at had been in the cottage for many years, several generations, through the cycle of the seasons and had suffered some of the ravages of gnawing teeth and burrowing insects. There were many treasures which eventually found their way into the growing Special Collections in the library, including several rare 19th-century Gothic and other novels, but what created the welcome surprise of discovery was a manuscript volume of some 150 pages titled A true relation of all the Proceedings in Parliament in the last session beginning 20th of January 1628 until the dissolution thereof. I knew that before the late 18th century, transcripts of parliamentary debates in Westminster were forbidden but that various means were found to provide records of those debates. The transcript I was holding was especially significant as it recorded Oliver Cromwell’s first speech in the Commons on Wednesday, February 11, 1629. This turned out to be an unrecorded version of the debates and thus of considerable importance.

My efforts to build significant collections and resources continued and my next adventures included an encounter with the bodyguard of a Caribbean head of state . . . Virginia Woolf in a hotel vault . . . and other adventures that will have to wait for another installment.  See page 4 for an article about the retirement of Robert C. We are now within sight of our $60-million goal for our Imagination Unbound campaign, a partner in U of T’s Boundless campaign. Victoria College 5T3 Scholarship is an endowment fund created through donations from Victoria College Class of 5T3 alumni. The scholarship is awarded to Victoria College students who have completed first year with high standing. “The fund began in 2007 with $17,042 and it now stands at $43,149.

Donations were matched, dollar for dollar, by the Regents Morrow Fund and the Isabel (Park) Hodgkinson Fund,” says Bill Tynkaluk Vic 5T3. “This is an excellent contribution on behalf of our class to worthy students.”

“ I chose to sponsor students for Emmanuel Days in order to encourage participation from those who may have been hesitant to attend due to financial concerns,” says Dale Skinner Emm 0T3, president, Emmanuel College Alumni/ae Association. “It’s important to remove these barriers and give current students an opportunity to engage in and contribute to other aspects of the larger life of the school. Emmanuel Days is a time when alumni from all over gather in one place, and we are reminded of our unique community and identity as Emmanuel grads; current students should be a part of that too.” Skinner also supports Emmanuel College’s Annual Fund.

Donations to the Annual Fund contribute to the areas of greatest need, including student scholarships, campus enhancements and educational opportunities, both within and beyond classroom borders.

The Moriyama Gold Medal is awarded annually to a Victoria College graduating student with high academic standing in the arts, whether visual, dramatic, cinematic or musical.

Tae Han Kim and Julian Hung (pictured here) are two of 15 students awarded the Dr. Lorus J. Milne and Dr. Margery J. Milne Award in 2013 for summer research projects. This award is given out as a research grant to support students in the life sciences program with high academic standing, who are pursuing noncredit research projects to enhance their university studies. “The Milne Award provided me with the support to experience medical research outside the classroom,” says Kim, who conducted research in geriatric pharmacy. “I developed not only my scientific rigour, but also an understanding of the sensitivity necessary for effective patient care.” Hung spent his summer under the tutelage of Brenda Andrews and her lab at U of T’s Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. “Winning this award,” he says, “has allowed me to participate at the forefront of DNA-damage research using the most advanced technology in the field today. I am able to study what I love without the burden of additional tuition and limitations on the mind.”

Heritage Donor Spotlight

Where There’s a Will…

Margaret “Peggy” (Scott) Duhig Vic 4T7 passed away in 2012 in her 88th year. Duhig, a retired teacher of English and home economics, was keenly interested in “promoting the work and philosophy of Northrop Frye.” She had a love of learning and thought it “admirable” to leave a bequest to support the fellowship program at Vic’s Northrop Frye Centre. Fellows are privy to the E.J. Pratt Library’s impressive Northrop Frye Collection and are welcome in the academic community of Victoria University A lifelong learner and avid reader, Duhig also loved opera, symphony and art. “Peggy had a lot of spark and was so eager to share her knowledge with others, including her knowledge of nature,” says her friend Helen Riggin. “She brought to our volunteer group, The Wye Marsh Wildflower Gardeners, a wealth of knowledge of all native species. Peggy was a true outdoorswoman and a dear friend.”

Goldring Student Centre Doors Open to Opportunities The official opening of the Goldring Student Centre was celebrated on September 25 (see page 5) but students have been enjoying the space since the end of April. The summer months are used by many of the on-campus groups to prepare for the busy fall term: the Orientation Executive works towards creating another unforgettable O-Week; The Strand gears up for its first issue of the academic year; and many of Vic’s club members gather to develop strategies to attract new members. Orientation Executive Committee members Nirusha Shanmuganathan, Ashley Harripersad and Chelsea Spagnolo (pictured from left to right) are thrilled to be residents of the building. “Before the Goldring Student Centre, clubs and levies were spread out all over campus,” says Shanmuganathan. “Now that we are all sharing a space, we feel like a stronger community. We are forming a

critical mass that is bound to increase student engagement.”

According to Spagnolo, thanks to the new building, there is a real incentive to stay on campus to work and socialize.

“The fact that students were willing to support this project financially shows there was a real need for an improved space,” says Harripersad.
