Ways of Knowing by william robins A shift is on in undergraduate education. Since the 1960s, the dominant model for universities in North America distinguished between their research mission—the discovery and publication of new knowledge by professors and graduate students—and their teaching mission—the dissemination of knowledge through undergraduate instruction.

In our changing educational environment a new model is emerging, according to which the teaching of undergraduates is increasingly intertwined with the research enterprises of universities. Taking advantage of the unique richness of the University of Toronto, with its extensive undergraduate programs and its unparalleled research strengths, Victoria is playing a leading role in this important shift.

Victoria College has academically strong students, faculty fellows with rigorous research profiles, a library rich with resources, research centres that promote undergraduate research, as well as the graduate research strengths of its sister college, Emmanuel. In recent years Victoria College has contributed in significant ways to a reorganization of undergraduate research. Vic has pioneered interdisciplinary research seminars for fourth-year students, created a new undergraduate research coordinator position, launched an Undergraduate Research Day, and appointed undergraduate fellows at the Northrop Frye Centre, and graduate fellows of the College (see page 15).

Through their involvement in research projects students learn methods of advanced inquiry, turning their chosen academic interests into a set of sophisticated interpretive skills. They participate in new forms of interpretation such as hospital labs, digital maker spaces and entrepreneurship hubs. They gain experience in project design, problem solving and data analysis. They cultivate habits of communication, collaboration, independence and public engagement. Instead of thinking of themselves as passive recipients of existing ideas, students become active creators of knowledge at the cutting edge of their disciplines.

Promoting undergraduate research is one of my key strategic priorities for Victoria. An especially noteworthy project which supports this initiative is the successful Scholars-in-Residence program. This began in 2016 as a collaboration between Vic and U of T’s Jackman Humanities Institute. It was so successful that in 2017 the other colleges and campuses joined in. Over the month of May students work, in teams of five, on faculty-led research projects in the humanities, living together in residence and receiving hands-on instruction in research methods, ethics and communication. It has proven to be a transformational experience for students. Vic is committed to sustaining and expanding this incredible program, and is thrilled that the Bader Philanthropies foundation has recently provided a million-dollar donation to ensure its success (see page 3). Vic has always valued intellectual exploration, probing conversation, and teamwork, understanding that they are essential aspects of a liberal education. By taking these values seriously, Vic has an important role to play in shaping the way undergraduate research will be incorporated into University practice. Vic is committed to making undergraduate research a prime area for innovation by anchoring initiatives of creative inquiry within a practice of liberal education.

Another of my presidential priorities is to foster understanding of the cultures and histories of Indigenous communities. In light of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, we are asking how Vic might best increase the visible presence of Indigenous people and cultures on campus, and integrate more comprehensively Indigenous content and ways of knowing in the programs of both of our colleges. In light of this concern, I encourage you to read the cover story of this Vic Report on Vic graduate, and elder, Kahontakwas Diane Longboat (see page 8).

As we increase our capacity to contribute to these important shifts in higher education—as we broaden opportunities for our undergraduates to be involved in cutting edge research, and as we support Indigenous students during their university careers and familiarize non-Indigenous students with Indigenous perspectives and content—we will have even more reason to celebrate Vic as a place where respectful, creative inquiry thrives.  2

$1-million Gift from Bader Philanthropies, Inc. Supporting Transformative Undergraduate Research Program at Vic Bader Philanthropies, Inc., a Milwaukee-based foundation, has donated $1 million to support Victoria College’s Scholarsin-Residence program. This program addresses the shortage of research opportunities available to undergraduates in the humanities and includes a unique requirement to live in residence at the College throughout the month-long, summer program. “Victoria College is absolutely delighted that Bader Philanthropies, Inc., through the Isabel and Alfred Bader Fund, has come forward to support the Scholars-in-Residence program,” says William Robins, president of Victoria University.

“Such a generous donation will ensure the program thrives.”

The Scholars-in-Residence program began in 2016 as a collaboration between Vic and the Jackman Humanities Institute at U of T. In 2017, in only its second year of operation, 1,000 applications were received for 50 openings in the program. The Bader Endowment for the Scholars-in-Residence program will provide the funding needed to ensure students have access to the residency and co-curricular components of the program. Further, the endowed support offered by the

Bader Endowment guarantees the program’s ongoing growth and success while maintaining the highest standards of creative inquiry and engaged learning.

The Bader family has a long tradition of supporting Victoria College. The Isabel Bader Theatre bears the name of Isabel (Overton) Bader Vic 4T9, Hon. 9T5. In addition, she has been extraordinarily generous in her support of students through the funding of many scholarships and bursaries. “Isabel and my father recognize the importance of creating traditional and unconventional experiences that open one’s mind to explore what is possible in the world,” says Daniel J. Bader, president and CEO of Bader Philanthropies. “The Scholars-in-Residence program, which spurs intellectual curiosity, complements the bricks and mortar that bear our family’s name.” Students have described the program as “life changing,” “intensely rewarding” and “perhaps the most valuable experience of my undergraduate career.” The Bader Endowment for the Scholarsin-Residence program contributes significantly to Victoria’s vision for transforming undergraduate education. 

David Wilson Celebrated as 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner The importance of responsible citizenship is one of the many reasons David Wilson Vic 6T8 has always divided his time between his job as an investment banker and securities regulator and giving back to Victoria University, to U of T and to non-profits for over 35 years. His passion for community service, public policy and philanthropy are just a few of the reasons why Stephen Grant Vic 7T0 nominated Wilson for the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honour bestowed by the Alumni of Victoria College.

Wilson’s career began in 1971 after he completed a BComm at Vic and an MBA at York University. His first post was as a corporate finance associate with McLeod Young Weir, which later became a subsidiary of Scotiabank. By 1974 he was named vice-president and director of its Corporate Finance Department. For the next 25 years he took on various executive roles before being named vice-chair of Scotiabank and head of its wholesale division. In 2005 he was appointed by the Government of Ontario as chair and CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission, a position he held until his retirement from full-time work in 2010.

“I am truly delighted that our Victoria College alumni have chosen David Wilson as their Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for 2018. He is an outstanding choice and has given so much to Victoria and to U of T over the years.

David embodies Vic’s ideals, acting always with integrity and compassion and every day exhibiting a commitment to his community,” says William Robins, president.

Wilson and his family are long-time supporters of Vic. In 2004, together with his siblings Kenneth and Ann Wilson Vic 7T2, he established the William and Margaret Wilson Bursary fund to honour their parents, who met while they were at Vic. In 2012 Wilson and his sister created the David and Ann Wilson Professorship in Public Policy and Society in the Vic One program.

Wilson volunteered for over nine years as a member of U of T’s Governing Council and was a member of the two presidential search committees that recommended David Naylor and Meric Gertler as U of T’s 15th and 16th presidents.

He has also served on many boards, including the National Ballet of Canada, United Way of Greater Toronto and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Currently he is chair of the Board of Trustees for Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and is chair of the Board of Directors of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority. He has received many awards and recognition for his achievements, including a U of T Arbor Award in 2013 for outstanding volunteerism. Victoria College is pleased to celebrate him for his many achievements and for his commitment to community service. A dinner will be held in Wilson’s honour on May 31, 2018.  vic report winter 2018

Chancellor’s Council Luncheon and Charter Day Convocation Celebrating Victoria’s Founding Victoria University celebrates its storied history on or near October 12 every year with Charter Day, a special occasion commemorating the founding of Victoria College in Cobourg, Ontario, in 1836 through the granting of Victoria’s Royal Charter by King William IV. Victoria University was formed in 1884 when Victoria College and Albert College federated with each other and, in 1890, Victoria University federated once again, this time with the University of Toronto, and left Cobourg in 1892. Today, Victoria University is made up of Victoria College, a college serving undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at U of T, and Emmanuel College, a theological college associated with the United Church of Canada, which grants advanced degrees.

Each Charter Day begins with the University’s Chancellor’s Council Luncheon. Victoria’s current chancellor, Carole (Goss) Taylor, O.C., Vic 6T7, Hon. 1T2, this year hosted her first luncheon for members of the council, which includes alumni and friends who generously support Victoria with both their time and with their philanthropy. The beginning of the event was marked by introducing the new, permanent members of the Chancellor’s Council: Phelps Bell Vic 5T3, Diane Dyer Vic 6T2 and Linda MacRae Vic 6T7. After the luncheon,

Taylor conducted a one-on-one interview with Paul Godfrey, C.M. about the current state of news and the media in an era of “fake” news. Godfrey is president and CEO of Postmedia Network Inc. and has had a distinguished career in the news business. It was a lively and thoughtful discussion, enhanced by the two speakers’ personal anecdotes and histories.

During the evening, Taylor presided over the Charter Day Convocation ceremonies. This convocation has been taking place since 1895 and is the occasion for the presentation of scholarships and other academic awards to students of Victoria College. The convocation was extremely well attended by students and their families, and donors of Victoria’s many scholarships and awards were also invited to attend the event.

Where possible, donors were matched with their award recipients during a special reception held immediately after the convocation ceremony. Vic students greatly appreciated the opportunity to thank the donors of their scholarships in person, and donors were especially pleased to learn about the students’ studies and interests. The evening was a wonderful celebration of history, excellence in teaching and learning, and academic achievement. 

Smart Aging Seminar Preparing for Change On October 17, 2017 Victoria University hosted a seminar on “Smart Aging.” A collaborative effort between Victoria and Silver Sherpa Inc., a professional services company working with clients and their families to facilitate successful transitions later in life, the evening focused on learning how to balance caring for elderly loved ones with career and family; how to embrace difficult conversations around aging; and considerations around Will preparation, Powers of Attorney and philanthropic intent reflective of family values.

As part of the seminar a case study was presented of a typical legacy donor to Victoria University. In addition to the practical process of leaving a legacy gift in one’s Will, the study provided an opportunity to discuss the many challenges loved ones face in ensuring that all the health and financial concerns which can surface are avoided, as well as discussion of the crucial importance of communication amongst family members at all times.

The seminar was well attended and provided excellent information for attendees. It also provided the opportunity to share stories and to ask questions of the presenters particularly relevant to each person’s family and to what they were currently facing, either personally or with a loved one.

In addition to the advancement & alumni affairs team, the presenters included the CEO of Silver Sherpa, Susan Hyatt, one of the firm’s consultants, Lisa Naprawa, and Emmanuel College associate professor, Pamela McCarroll, who spoke

VIC IN N.Y.C. Vic visited the Big Apple on November 15 for an alumni and prospective-student event. Chatting and reminiscing took place at the Consulate General of Canada in the city’s core. Appropriately, the event was held in the Ken and Pat Taylor Room. The late Ken Taylor, O.C., Vic 5T7 was Victoria University’s 11th chancellor from 1998–2004. He was known around the world for the role he played in the U.S. hostage crisis of 1979, in Iran.

HEALING THE HUMAN SPIRIT

iguring out how to permit open fires on hospital grounds in the City of Toronto is no small task, but it’s the kind of bureaucratic challenge Kahontakwas Diane Longboat has specialized in throughout her career, most recently as an elder, traditional healer and senior project manager in Aboriginal Engagement and Outreach at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

In June 2016, CAMH opened medicine gardens, a sacred fire and sweat lodge on the grounds of its Queen Street campus, the first time such culturally relevant care has been made available to First Nations, Métis and Inuit clients and patients at a hospital in Ontario as part of the standard of care and an integral part of treatment plans. The project was the result of years of planning and the culmination of the dreams of elders such as Vern Harper who came before Longboat at CAMH; these are the kinds of connections that Longboat relishes.

“I have had the chance to become friends with people within CAMH to whom, under regular working circumstances, I would never have access—the CAMH fire marshal, the managers within our facilities department, plant operations and maintenance, parking, security,” she explains. While there were alternatives to open fires, for example having a fire in a kiln, Longboat and her colleagues wanted the site to be as authentic as possible, and so part of their protocol now involves coordinating with the Toronto Fire Department when fires are lit and when they are extinguished.

In its first year, more than 1,000 Indigenous clients, patients, staff members and guests have accessed services on-site, visiting the sacred fire, working with elders and traditional healers, and preparing for and undergoing the more intensive experience of the sweat lodge. “Many of our patients and clients are embracing their Indigenous heritage for the first time,” Longboat explains.

“Having grown up—many of them in a foster care system or in the city—they had little or no access to their heritage. We know that culture,

language, heritage, ceremonies, connection to community and to the land, are all resiliency factors, and so if you have any one of those pieces removed from your consciousness you may become lost in the world. It’s really critical to ground our clients in their culture and heritage when they come here.” Traditional Aboriginal policies support the cultural and spiritual healing work that is being done.

It’s been gratifying, Longboat says, to work with officials at CAMH who support and respect the Indigenous concept of healing. “I think it’s the time of the TRC [Truth and Reconciliation Commission],” she explains. “I think it’s the period of science and medicine understanding that spirituality has a significant role to play in well-being, and I think it’s also a time of conscious corporate leadership. Our CEO, Catherine Zahn, and our board of directors, have created an environment here in which they’re searching for excellence, and searching with an attitude of openness and respect. We’re also looking at innovation as the next stage of our own evolution, both in this field and in this hospital.”

“Evolution” is a word that recurs in conversation with Longboat, who is passionate about innovative change that supports the well-being of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people and, in so doing, supports the well-being of all people.

She notes the 2016 census which found that 84 per cent of Indigenous people in Toronto are living in poverty.

“Poverty has major implications in outcomes for mental health, for health, for education, and for economic opportunities. We have to be mindful of the conditions and the context in which our people live today, but also conscious of the historical trauma, the intergenerational trauma, and the effect on DNA, because trauma destroys parts of your DNA and you pass compromised DNA on to your children and your grandchildren. The damage moves on through the generations.”

First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have a responsibility for their healing, Longboat says, but so does the rest of Canada. She points out that long-time residents of Canada came here escaping

war, genocide, and leaving religious persecution, as do many newcomers arriving in this country. Healing the human spirit is not just an Indigenous concern—it has consequences for everyone.

Healing the human spirit is a big project, along with helping systems and institutions to evolve, but when asked how she breaks down such a project into manageable pieces, Longboat answers quickly: “We break it down into smaller pieces by the work we do at Soul of the Mother, which is our healing lodge on the shores of the river at Six Nations, Grand River territory.” (Longboat is from the Turtle Clan and Mohawk Nation, and grew up on the Six Nations Reserve.)

Longboat founded Soul of the Mother in 1994, following a vision. “The vision was to create a fire of peace in my home community and to that fire of peace would come the nations of my people for their healing and revitalization, and

“ Poverty has major implications in outcomes for mental health . . .” the Creator would send the strongest warriors of spirit to help at that fire and to find their own healing, but also to find their own calling to support the greater vision of what the Creator has in store for humanity.”

When Longboat leaves work at CAMH she goes home to Six Nations where ceremonies and sweat lodges take place on the weekends. “It’s been really gratifying to see new generations of young people coming forward who have all the gifts of the ancestors, ready and willing to manifest those gifts along with their professional education.

They have the full complement now of what they need to be successful in the world—identity, belonging, meaning in life, language, ceremonial knowledge and strong traditional cultural beliefs.”

Members of other First Nations attend ceremonies at Soul of the Mother, and so do staff from health and educational programs. “We’ve also had international visitors, Indigenous nations from Africa, and relatives from

other faith traditions—Buddhists, and Christians from Italy, Druids—and so it’s been an amazing opportunity to see how we are more alike than we are different, how our philosophies support one another, and how our collective dreams for the healing of Mother Earth and the spiritual evolution of humanity are achievable.”

Longboat say that she has always been in love with Creation. Born in 1951, she grew up at Six Nations on a farm with 300 acres. “My mother would take us into the fields and into the bush and she did something that was so profoundly beautiful—she introduced my siblings and me to Creation—to the plants that were edible, to the plants that were inedible. She taught us not to be afraid of animals but to be respectful of animals. She taught to embrace the seasons and to love the seasons. When my brothers and I got older, she released us, unsupervised, into those 300 acres. Being the oldest, I was always responsible for my two younger brothers and I never got lost.

We would be out all day, and I always knew how to find our way home.”

Longboat started school when she was eight, building on the love of learning her parents had nurtured at home. “I had all Indigenous teachers throughout my elementary years and it was amazing, because you see them as role models and they reflect the best of what you can be.” She names her Grade 4 and 5 teacher, writer and journalist George Beaver, as, “the most gifted teacher I have ever encountered. He inspired me to go into teaching, and to really develop my teaching capacity.”

After attending high school in Toronto, Longboat entered university in 1971. “Coming to Victoria College was really exciting for me as it was the first time I was on my own. I have always been proud to say that I was a Vic student at U of T. And part of that pride was the fact that in the late 1960s and early ‘70s there were only 160 First Nations students in colleges or universities in all of Canada.” (She notes that today there are 40,000.) After studying French and English as an undergraduate at Vic, she went on to receive a Bachelor of vic report winter 2018

Education degree, and then a master’s degree from OISE in 1978.

After working for the Assembly of First Nations, Longboat returned to U of T in 1986 to coordinate the Aboriginal Health Professions Program, which grew out of a committee of nonIndigenous doctors and dentists and other health professionals studying the reasons why so few Indigenous students were enrolled at the University of Toronto in the health sciences. At the same time an initiative by Health and Welfare Canada offered funding to recruit Indigenous students into health programs, including medicine, nursing, speech-language pathology, dentistry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

To demonstrate the impact of the Aboriginal Health Professions Program, Longboat shares stories of participants from her home at Six Nations, including a pharmacist and a speech-language pathologist, both of whom are health leaders in the community today. Other Indigenous students of the time became surgeons and family doctors.

Longboat continues, “I ran into a graduate student in social work at an Indigenous education conference about a year ago. She said to me, ‘Diane I want to thank you for all the work you did to bring culture, language, ceremony, elders and traditional teachings to us as students at U of T, because it gave us a sense of identity, pride and strength that we might not

otherwise have had, and it grounded us in our professional capacities to be the best we could be and are today.’”

Longboat’s experiences with the Aboriginal Health Professions Program inspired the founding of U of T’s First Nations House, the Office of Aboriginal Student Services and Programs, which celebrated 25 years of service in 2017.

“We saw that our students needed academic counselling, access to tutors, and scholarships and bursaries. They needed an elder-in-residence who would help them with their dreams and visions, their worries and anxieties, and boost their cultural knowledge while, at the same time, supporting their academic learning. We became much more than a recruitment service for health professionals, we became a service network to all Indigenous students studying at the undergraduate and graduate levels.”

First Nations House, however, was just the beginning. “You can’t have student services without academic programming,” says Longboat, “so my next challenge was to meet with the Faculty of Arts & Science to talk about the curriculum they were offering so that when our students saw the academic offerings of the university they would be drawn in, in a way that would feel welcoming and respectful of their cultures; a place where they knew they would be supported in a home away from home and could learn more

about their respective cultures. So that was the next part of our work, creating a curriculum across the university, and I’m really happy to say that the program of Aboriginal Studies grew out of those early initiatives in the undergraduate Faculty of Arts & Science.”

Longboat regards First Nations House, along with Soul of the Mother, as her legacy—although her continuing work, in addition to her position at CAMH, ensures that her legacy is evergrowing. In 2017, she was appointed as Indigenous education advisor to Premier Kathleen Wynne and Education Minister Mitzie Hunter. She is also co-chair of the Indigenous Working Group for the 7th Parliament of the World’s Religions, convening in Toronto in November 2018, with five days of programming planned for thousands of participants from 80 countries all over the world.

Even with this legacy, however, and Longboat’s years of dedication, she feels strongly that work remains to be done. “I have a dream for U of T,” Longboat explains, “that as our Indigenous students enter the finest institution in the country, their culture, their language, their ceremonies and their identity will be strengthened and supported to enable them to achieve academic excellence. My dream is to see them graduate from university as the new leaders of their generation.” 

About the Eagle Fan In the photo on page eight, Kahontakwas Diane Longboat is holding the sacred wing of a female eagle from Canada’s east coast. This eagle was not killed, but was recovered in the wild after dying of natural causes. The eagle is the strongest of all birds and its duty is to carry prayers of gratitude to the Creator and to watch for any signs that will endanger peace. It is often seen flying over ceremonial lodges in recognition that the Creator has heard the prayers and sent the eagle to lay blessings on the people. The eagle fan was given to Longboat by Mi’kmaq grandmothers, the ceremonial leaders of their nation. It was given in recognition of spiritual leadership and the healing gifts she has shared with the Mi’kmaq over the decades. Attached to the wing is a bear claw that was given to Longboat by Indigenous youth, for the fearlessness in her ceremonial work of teaching, healing and leadership.

Also attached are white wampum shells that were given by a faith keeper to give power for ceremonial outcomes. Faith keepers promote the spirituality and traditions of the Haudenosaunee people.

The Alumni of Victoria College (AVC) celebrated the three winners of the Victoria College Emerging Leader Award on November 22. This year the event added a special component to the evening. Current Vic students were invited to join the winners to hear a panel discussion about each person’s career journey.

The lively panel was informative and all guests enjoyed hearing from this year’s winners: Ige Egal Vic 0T9, executive director of the Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF), an organization he helped establish in 2011; Elise Paradis Vic 0T6, faculty member at U of T’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Canada Research Chair in Collaborative Healthcare Practice; and Tasha Schumann, entrepreneur, music producer, Juno-nominated artist and mentor. Each speaker emphasized the importance of taking interests, passions and ambitions out into the world. They also underlined that being adaptable is an important 21st-century skill. “Plans are important and so are goals,” said Egal, “but keep an open mind. Your next job doesn’t have to be your final career.” Everyone agreed that there is not one path

to career success. “The key to success,” said Schumann, “is not to hold yourself to one outcome. Set a wildly ambitious goal. This creates a path and sets a tone. It gives you the opportunity to put your head down and to start working with conviction.” Collaboration with others was also a common thread between each winner. “Sometimes you push your peers, sometimes you will be pulled by them. Find your people and invest in them,” said Paradis.

The Emerging Leader Award recognizes recent graduates, 35 years of age or under, who have excelled professionally or who have notable accomplishments in their volunteer service, such as community work, humanitarianism and philanthropy.

CAREERS, AUTHORS, HONOURS Peter Broughton Vic 6T3 has completed Northern Star: J.S. Plaskett (University of Toronto Press, 2017). This richly illustrated book tells the story of how John Stanley Plaskett, a technician in U of T’s Department of Physics in the 1890s, became a world-renowned astronomer. To carry out his research, he persuaded the federal government to finance what was then the largest telescope in the world, and the observatory to house it in Victoria, B.C. Remarkably, construction took place during World War I and was completed in 1918. A hundred years later, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory continues to be a focus of astronomical teaching and research.

Jocelyn Cullity Vic 8T7 has published a historical novel, Amah and the SilkWinged Pigeons, with Toronto’s Inanna Publications. Based on a true story, the book explores the role African women played in resisting English rule in 19th-century India.

Cullity is the director of the BFA in creative writing at Truman State University in Missouri—one of the United States’ top-ten public, liberal arts colleges.

Stephen Grant Vic 7T0 and Julian Porter Vic 5T9 have co-authored 149 Paintings You Really Need to See in North America (Dundurn, Fall 2017). Grant and Porter use their considerable knowledge of art to highlight paintings by artists such as Giotto and Picasso (among others), which are on display in North American museums and galleries.

Laura Hamilton Vic 6T6 has written Lily: One in a Million—A Miracle of Survival (Veloce, 2018). The book chronicles the story of Lily, a puppy born with an extremely rare and incurable disability.

from her mother, which meant that Laura had to wean her early and handfeed her in order to keep her alive. Today, Lily is thriving and almost four years old. She works as a Pets As Therapy dog and helps in schools and residential care homes—she truly is a working miracle.

Hamilton hopes that Lily’s story may give hope to others, and inspire them not to give up on their animals who may have life-threatening conditions.

Paul Huyer Vic 8T1, past chair of the Board of Regents (2010–2014), was named the 2017 world champion for the male 55–59 division in the Standard Distance Duathlon.

The race was in Penticton, B.C. this past summer and comprised a 10-km run, 40-km bike ride and 5-km run.

Doyali lslam Vic 1T2 has been hired as the new editor of Write, the Writers’ Union of Canada’s quarterly publication for members. Islam, who is an awardwinning poet, also serves as poetry editor at Arc Poetry Magazine.

Erin McDonald Vic 0T4 has been recognized by the Edmonton Alberta lifestyle magazine Avenue as one of Edmonton’s most exceptional emerging community and corporate leaders of 2017. McDonald was chosen as a top 40 under 40 winner by Avenue because of her instrumental work in growing the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) art collection. The AFA collection is comprised of approximately 9,000 pieces, and McDonald has successfully made it and other government collections more accessible by raising their profiles through events and annual Doors Open tours.

Jean (Reilly) O’Grady Vic 6T4 is the author of Margaret Addison: A Biography (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2001), winner of the Alison Prentice Prize of the Ontario Historical Association. On November 22 she delivered an illustrated talk entitled “An Expanding Freedom: Margaret Addison and Women’s Rights,” as part of the VWA’s 120th year of programming. Addison Vic 1889 was unusual in that she attended university at a time when very few women did. By

the time she became dean of Annesley Hall (1903–1931), higher education for women was accepted. But though the intellectual experience offered to Vic women was on a par with men’s, they had only limited opportunities to develop socially through all-important extra-curricular activities. Addison created a more well-rounded experience for them through enriched communal living, student government in residence, compulsory physical education, cultural outings, study groups and sex education.

About the latter she remarked: “We have our choice—either of giving them wise, sane, unsensational information, or of having them get it in other and probably in objectionable forms.” She consistently championed women’s educational rights, and even in her retirement was involved with countless committees and boards that promoted women. Addison was adamant that women should play ever more important roles in society, from being ordained as ministers to working as elected officials.

and countries, realizing a better balance between the public sector and the private sector, and making a quantum leap in Canada’s international relations. Schafer argues, however, that Canada would be doing these things as an exemplar rather than a super power or empire builder.

Tanya Talaga Vic 9T3 has written Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City (House of Anansi Press, 2017). From 2000 to 2011, seven Indigenous high school students died in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They were hundreds of kilometres away from their families, forced to leave home because there was no adequate high school on their reserves. Five were found dead in the rivers surrounding Lake Superior, below a sacred Indigenous site. Using a sweeping narrative focusing on the lives of the students, award-winning investigative journalist Talaga delves into the history of this northern city that has come to manifest Canada’s long struggle with human rights violations against Indigenous communities.

The Northrop Frye Centre Circa 2018

by robert davidson It has been an exciting time at the Northrop Frye Centre (NFC) over the past three years and, as we focus even more on one of our key goals of facilitating undergraduate research, the number of success stories continues to grow.

The NFC’s strong emphasis on assisting Vic students to improve their research skills through a process of guided inquiry has brought together a diverse group of partners and seen awareness of our programs and participation in them grow. We consider it a great sign that competition for the NFC Undergraduate Research Awards has been increasing each year since their inception. The successful applicants not only receive funds to help them pursue their projects (either individual or faculty-led) but also are named as full-fledged members of the centre as undergraduate fellows. Our current faculty partners have been unanimous in their praise of the work done by these enthusiastic young scholars and we are constantly on the lookout for new research projects to support. Additionally, we are extremely fortunate to count on the invaluable help of the E.J. Pratt Library staff. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm for research and learning on both sides of the equation, and the library’s seminar, Research and Writing Seminars: Develop your Scholarly Voice, has been particularly instrumental in our NFC undergrad fellows’ professional development. Mentorship is also high on the agenda, and our belief in putting together scholars at different stages of their careers has been fruitful. Our NFC doctoral fellows, Aleksa Alaica, Beyhan Farhadi, Maris Karyl Franz and William Fysh, lead multiple workshops during the school year and liaise with Ira Wells, the Undergraduate Research Program coordinator, to ensure a full slate of opportunities for all Vic students.

The doctoral fellows will be presenting the fruits of their own research in a series of talks this winter, so please keep your eyes peeled for Jamie Quadros’ beautifully designed posters and information in the Albert Memo!

Splendid proof of just what Vic undergraduates are capable of came this past fall with the extremely successful launch of Literary Titans Revisited: The Earle Toppings Interviews with CanLit Poets and Writers of the Sixties. This volume, which was edited by Anne Urbancic, Victoria College’s Mary Rowell Jackman Professor of Humanities, and published by Dundurn Press, was the result of archival work done by the NFC’s first cohort of undergraduate fellows in close coordination with the library’s Agatha Barc and Colin Deinhardt. Throughout the process, Earle Toppings Hon. 1T6, who had conducted the initial interviews, was a wonderful collaborator; what a treat for all of us to have had the chance to see materials from the archives be resurrected and published in such a great edition.

Our current undergraduate fellows, Thomas Fraser, Margaryta Golovchenko, Benjamin Hillier-Weltman,

Samantha Mazzilli and Sarah Ratzlaff, are pursuing extremely interesting research that ranges from studies of monuments, public and political opposition art, to government procurement policies and Epicurean philosophy. While the results of the students’ research will be communicated at the 2018 Capstone Colloquium and Research Day on March 26, on November 24 we were treated to a screening of Indefensible: The Troubling Legacy of Edward Cornwallis directed and produced by Jack Farrell and Thomas Fraser. The documentary drew a diverse crowd of undergraduates, professors and members of the general public and elicited a lively discussion of memorialization and the politics of memory.

The NFC is committed not only to promoting research at all levels but also to bringing specialists of different stripes to Vic to broaden our intellectual community. This year’s Northrop Frye Centre Lecture, delivered to a packed Alumni Hall by Josiah Blackmore of Harvard University, explored Portuguese colonial expansion through the poetry of Luís de Camões, to fantastic effect. I encourage you to attend our various public events and to stay abreast, especially, of the exciting work of our undergraduates.  Robert Davidson is the director of the Northrop Frye Centre. Dean’s Office Conferences This fall, the Office of the Dean of Students hosted two topical conferences relevant to the entire Vic community.

The sixth annual Minding our Minds: Mental Health in Higher Education conference took place on October 26 and U of T’s Chad Jankowski the inaugural Sex & Gender facilitates a workshop at the on Campus conference Minding our Minds conference. took place on November 24.

Alumni Hall was full of attendees including faculty, students and administrators, for both conferences. Guest speakers from the fields of nursing, psychiatry and psychology came from U of T, CAMH and the Wellesley Institute for Minding our Minds. Topics included a keynote about the

Impact of Cultural Identity on Mental Health (in University and College Students); a panel discussion; and a keynote on The Importance of Social Factors in Mental Health in Higher Education. Another part of the conference was devoted to hearing very personal stories from two current students.

The day wrapped up with professionally facilitated workshops on bystander intervention and how one might assist or refer to appropriate resources. For the Sex & Gender conference, there were two very effective keynote addresses as well as two panel discussions. The conference explored myriad issues and the need for challenging and sometimes uncomfortable conversations. Ways to challenge discriminatory practices within the university setting were explored as well as the ways education can change behaviours. The Dean’s next conference, Campus (Re)Conciliations: Second Listenings, takes place on March 22–23. All are welcome.
