round age 50, Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle tissue as a natural part of the aging process, sets in. It happens to everybody at a rate of roughly one percent per year after the age of 50. It’s not reversible, but there are strategies to reduce the effects of Sarcopenia. The key is to stimulate the skeletal system through strength training. The old saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it” applies here. Aside from preventing muscle loss, there are other benefits. 1. Improves balance -- both when standing still and when moving, thus lowering the risk of falls

6

2. Fights depression, as well as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other chronic ailments 3. Eases arthritis pain, lowers blood pressure, and fights obesity 4. Improves bone density and prevents osteoarthritis 5. Stimulates neural-pathways and improves cognitive function 6. Prevents weight gain! The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn (Continued on Next Page)

Active Lifestyles

How to Implement a Strength Training Program Focus on “push, pull, and squat” movements. These movements work multiple “big muscles” in unison. As we age, it’s more important to focus on speed and control versus weight. Lifting really heavy weights in a seated position doesn’t help us move better, whereas the ability to react fast and avoid obstacles improves quality of life and prevents falls. Perform these exercises in a standing position versus a sitting position when possible. Choose cables and bands over machines to maximize the benefits. Focus on Core Strength - Your Foundation Imagine you built the house of your dreams, but it was built without a foundation. Without a foundation, no matter how strong the materials are, the house will always be unstable. It will eventually crumble to the ground. When it comes to strength training and daily function, your core is the foundation. Most importantly, avoid core exercises that curve the spine such as sit-ups or crunches. Instead, focus on core exercises that stabilize the spine. Dr. Stuart McGill, author of “The Back Mechanic,” found that sit-ups put an unnecessary load on the spine and do little to engage the core. The spine is meant to “resist” force, not “create” it. Focus on planking exercises and movements like the “bird dog” pose to protect the spine and maximize core engagement. Five Things to Know About Heart Disease PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cardiovascular Center

C

an you name the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States? You might think it’s cancer, but heart disease is responsible for more deaths than all types of cancer combined. Lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise may help lower heart disease risk, but many are linked to age, genetics or other factors beyond your control. In recognition of American Heart Month, we’re sharing information to encourage you to become heart-smart. Women and Heart Disease It’s a common misperception that heart disease mostly affects men. It’s a major cause of death among women. In fact, certain conditions increase a woman’s risk – gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, which are complications related to pregnancy, are two examples. Also, the hormone estrogen that helps protect a woman’s heart can reach low levels during menopause and increase heart disease risk. Women can experience different symptoms too. While chest pain is common among men and women, women can also have less obvious symptoms. “Women often experience nausea, fatigue and shortness of breath several weeks before a heart attack,” says Dr. Kevin Steel, DO. “Since these symptoms are vague and happen with other illnesses, women may not recognize them as signs of something serious. That’s why it’s important to have preventive heart check-ups regularly.” Atrial Fibrillation Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common cause of an irregular heartbeat and usually causes the heart to beat much faster than normal. A person with AFib is five times more 12

likely to suffer a stroke than someone with a regular heartbeat. People with AFib often take medicine to help prevent blood clots. However, medicines can have unwanted side effects, such as bruising or bleeding problems. In recent years, a new device called the WATCHMANTM replaces blood thinners to reduce stroke risk. “The WATCHMAN is a tiny device that we implant into the heart through a tiny incision near the groin, and then we guide it to the heart through a blood vessel,” explains Dr. Steel. “It usually requires just one night in the hospital, and for many patients who can’t take blood thinners over an extended period, the WATCHMAN is a good alternative.” Heart Failure Heart failure happens when your heart can’t pump as much blood as your body needs. It can have several causes, including coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and problems with the valves. Your heart works even harder to pump blood, and your body tries to help by holding on to fluids. Eventually, this causes shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, and weakness and swelling in your feet and ankles. Treatments, including medicine, pacemakers to control the heartbeat and surgery to repair the heart can help manage heart failure. Structural Heart Disease Structural heart disease involves problems with the structure of the heart, including the valves and arteries. Heart failure, for example, can occur when the valve that sends blood from Spring/Summer 2020

your heart to the rest of your body no longer works properly. Surgery to replace the heart valve is one treatment option, but it is a major surgery and some patients aren’t candidates. “For patients considered at risk for surgical valve replacement, PeaceHealth St. Joseph offers a newer, minimally invasive option called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR),” says Dr. Steel. Heart Disease testing Testing for heart disease can help identify problems early and may even save a life. Talk to your doctor about your risk for heart disease and whether an imaging exam or other screening test is an option. “At PeaceHealth St. Joseph, we offer several tests to screen for coronary artery disease, including calcium score, carotid doppler and VibrantSeniorOptions.com

fasting cholesterol,” says Dr. Steel. “If patients already have symptoms of heart disease, we have advanced cardiac imaging, and PeaceHealth St. Joseph is one of only three locations in the entire state offering radiation-free, high definition stress testing, known as a stress MRI.” Make 2020 the year you take care of your heart health. he Coronavirus/COVID-19 is a serious disease with serious consequences for our local communities. Since the earliest news of the outbreak overseas, your team at WhidbeyHealth and at other area medical centers have taken immediate steps to prepare, respond, and stay flexible to meet the challenge head on. We’ve reallocated staff, contained exposure to patients, visitors, and staff and reallocated resources to where they’re most needed. Decisions have been carefully weighed in favor of safety over convenience with a constant eye on the horizon: accelerating our return to more normal lives. Responsive Communities Pitch In!

Medical centers have not done this alone. Our incredibly responsive communities have pitched in like never before. One example is ‘social distancing’ – preventing community spread by enlarging our personal space. This is difficult for warm and friendly people, but it’s more than a policy. Social distancing has emerged as a rallying cry, a way to contribute, a way to take positive action steps. One minor inconvenience has become the most important thing we can do to protect our family and friends. Many are adding a little humor as they invent alternatives to shaking hands and hugging. We’re finding ways to be social even while “social distancing.” We aren’t becoming hermits – far from it. Everywhere we look, people are checking in with each other. Continued Vigilance

It is not a stretch to say that, at times of crisis, the fabric of our communities get stronger in many ways. Inaction turns to action. The compassion we have always had now bubbles to the surface as we work together to face the day’s hurdles, one neighbor at a time.

hile there is no vaccine for COVID-19, as of this writing, each of us can take steps to avoid exposure to the virus. These precautions, recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (hyperlink: https://www.cdc. gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/preventiontreatment.html), are the same steps we take to help prevent other common respiratory infections and influenza. 1. Avoid close contact with people who are 16

sick, whenever possible. 2. Practice good personal hygiene habits. This includes frequent hand washing with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds, particularly after using the restroom and before eating; Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol) is a suitable alternative when soap and water are not readily available. f you’re like many people in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, you’ve ridden city buses during other periods of your life. Perhaps you have memories of riding the bus during your college years, or while living and working in a more urban area. Maybe you’ve enjoyed traveling by bus or train while vacationing in other parts of the country or other parts of the world. However, for many of your trips in and around Whatcom and Skagit Counties, you find yourself traveling most often by car. Many people are happy making most of their trips by car, but may have some trips that are less desirable. Driving excursions on the freeway, through congested downtown areas, or during hours of darkness are times where a few people

would love to leave the driving to someone else. Others are thinking ahead to a time when driving might be less ideal based on changes in their physical or sensory abilities. And still others would like to save money or travel in a way that’s gentler on our natural environment. How Does Travel Training Work? “Okay!” you say. “How does one get started with riding a ‘fixed route’ or city bus? Fortunately, both Skagit Transit and Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) have Travel Training programs. With Travel Training, you as a potential bus rider would work one-on-one with a Travel Trainer. You would learn how to plan bus trips to the places you would like to go. Also, you can learn to read and understand route maps and schedules, practice safety skills as a (Continued on Page 33)

A Week With Roy Rogers My Best Job Ever! Jerry Stewart, One Moment in America

A

s we look ahead to celebrate another Labor Day in September here in America, I don’t know about you, but I find myself doing a “think back” to all the labors in my life. My dad started us kids early in our labors with yard work, painting, and doing chores for our elderly neighbors. My first real job was at age 14, when I worked that summer for the City Parks Department. We cleaned up parks, dug through dirty creeks, and pulled a lot of weeds. All that for $1.29 an hour. Now that sounds like unfair child wages! Actually, the minimum wage in Texas that year of 1962 was $1.25. But as I think of all my jobs in my life, I do have one job that stands out as my most memorable. It was in 1975 when I worked with and lived with my childhood hero, Roy Rogers, “King of the Cowboys.” The story of how I got there was both strange and amazing. I was going to graduate school and had just gotten my degree in accounting, so I started a small accounting company. I was trying to support myself and my family while going full time to school. Because I spent so much of each day at school, I had a very hard time building my new company. I decided to do what some would consider a “below my level of education” work; I started going door to door selling the installation of peep holes. (You know, those little scopes you put in your front door to see who’s at your door before you open it). Yep, it was a real job, and I made money doing it. Well, one day I knocked on a door to sell my “Peep Hole Install” idea to a family, and they said “yes.” As I worked, the owner learned 22

that I was an accountant and hired me to handle the accounting work for his company that produced TV Commercials. But you say, “Hold it; what does all this have to do with Roy Rogers?” Good question. After a few months of working together, this TV Commercial producer told me that he was going to produce a feature film – a full- length Hollywood Movie! It all sounded crazy to think that he wanted to hire me, an inexperienced accountant whom he met while I installed a peep hole in his door. I was to go on location for seven weeks to handle all the money for the film. Oh, and one more thing – the star of his movie was, believe it or not, my childhood hero – Mr. Roy Rogers, “King of the Cowboys.” I had watched Roy Rogers on TV and in movies most of my life. Could it all really be true? In July of that year 1975, I drove to a little town about 60 miles from Lubbock, Texas, the town of Dickens. This town had a cafe, a gas station, and a little ten room motel. For seven weeks I lived in the motel room next door to my cowboy hero, Roy Rogers! We had meals together, drives, talks, and even singing. I got to see first-hand just what kind of a man he really was. Our time together didn’t tarnish his image one bit. In fact, it made him even greater in my eyes. He was kind and considerate, very down to earth, not full of himself and his fame. And he lived by his own Roy Rogers Rider’s Rules that he had taught us kids while watching his shows. If you’re old enough to remember Roy Rogers, you may remember these rules: Be clean, be courteous and polite, and always obey your parents. Protect the weak and help (Continued on Next Page) Spring/Summer 2020

A Week With Roy Rogers them, but never take chances. Study hard and learn all you can; be kind to animals and take care of them. Eat all your food and never waste any. Love God and go to Sunday school regularly, and always respect our flag and our country. Roy Rogers lived by those rules. Seven weeks with Roy Rogers was, one of the most memorable times of my life. I recall the times I would be at a restaurant with Roy, and fans would approach him for an autograph. They would look at me and assume I was somebody, and want my autograph too. At times Roy would have to walk to the phone booth by the highway just to make a call, because he suspected that the motel switchboard operator might be listening in. There he was, standing at that booth, right by the road, as curious fans drove up and down the road hoping to get a glimpse of their cowboy idol. VibrantSeniorOptions.com

One day, one fan almost fell out of his car taking a picture of Roy’s stand-in double, thinking it was Roy, while, at the same time, almost running over the real Roy Rogers - and he never even knew it. Well, sadly, all good things must end, and soon the filming was over. I saw Roy and Dale one more time at the film’s Premier, but our paths never crossed again. But, wow, what a wonderful adventure experience. Roy Rogers and his wife, Dale Evans, are gone now; they’re with the Lord in Heaven. But their memory still lives on in my heart and millions of others who grew up with his “Riders Rules.” Thanks, Roy, for your talk, and your walk. Happy Trails – see you both in Heaven. Resisting Viruses With Your Immune System Being Proactive Using Natural Remedies Jim Ehmke, Clinical Nutritionist, Complete Health Services, Inc.

I

t goes without saying that Coronavirus or COVID-19 has been on everyone’s thoughts. The intent of this article is to provide a basic education on how the immune system responds to viruses, and with this knowledge, what you can do to support immune function preventively and therapeutically. Basics on Viruses and Cellular Reactions First some basics: A virus must parasitize a living host - the cells of animals or plants (intracellular). They alter the cell in various ways to support the virus. Bacteria, on the other hand, live between cells (inter-cellular) and can grow on living and non-living surfaces. When the body is exposed to a virus, specifically a respiratory virus such as COVID-19, the first contact occurs at the cellular level, where the virus infects the cell. This activates “cell mediated” immunity, the first line of defense. It’s here where the focus on prevention should occur. A Healthy Immune System’s Response The immune system responds to this by producing Cytokines and Chemokines. Cytokines are mostly pro-inflammatory chemicals. Their purpose is multifaceted. As pro-inflammatory chemicals they open cells to expose the virus, but a few Cytokines are capable of killing the virus. Chemokines are white blood cells that now have access to the infected cells, thanks to Cytokines, to eradicate the virus. So the stage is set. The immune system responded as it should.

30

Hyperactive Immune System & Cytokine Storm - The Real Danger What happens next is the key. Some individuals are predisposed to over-produce Cytokines, especially the pro-inflammatory ones. This results in a “Cytokine storm,” which causes excessive cell damage that releases fluids into the lungs. As this accelerates out-of-control, the lungs fill with thick viscous fluids that impair breathing, and at a certain point this can be fatal. Even those who recover are likely to have some degree of tissue damage. The early statistics of COVID-19 suggest that well over 90% of infected individuals survive, but it’s way too early to know how this will play-out over time. Also, most of the survivors do have some degree of lung damage, which in the case of other respiratory viruses tends to self-heal over time. Hopefully this holds for COVID-19. Of course, the biochemistry is much more sophisticated, but this provides the lay reader with an overview of how a respiratory virus does its damage. It isn’t actually the virus that kills, but rather an out-of-control hyperactive immune system that generates a Cytokine storm. By the way, this is exactly the same predisposition that individuals with autoimmune disease have; lupus, RA, Sjogren’s, Reynaud’s, Grave’s, etc. Think of driving your car at 50 mph. It’s easy. Then imagine driving at 100 to 150 mph. Now things are out of control and injury or risk of death is dramatically increased. Therefore, in addition to the basics of doing one’s best to avoid exposure by avoiding groups, washing hands, etc., there are some basic steps one can take to strengthen the immune system Spring/Summer 2020

that have so far been ignored by the mainstream media. Being proactive in this regard makes perfect sense; and there’s no risk, only potential benefits.

production of glutathione, a vital immune system enzyme, and is specific to a wide range of lung therapies: 600 mg 1 to 2 x daily. • Garlic is a wonderful antiviral. Take 2 or 3 caps twice daily with meals. Or, suck on a raw clove daily.

Proactive Natural Remedies Here is a list to consider. These are tried and proven natural antivirals. I’ve listed them for prevention and higher therapeutic doses. The goal is to support cell-mediated immunity, the first exposure. • Vitamin D is a profound antiviral. Take 5000 IU (125 mcg) daily up to 10,000 IU (250 mcg). Get a Vitamin D blood test after a month. The goal is 65 to 90. The range is 30-100 ng/mL. • Vitamin C also has antiviral qualities. Take 500 to 2000 mg 2 or 3 x daily. • Zinc is another antiviral. This is why OTC zinc lozenges are routine in cold remedies. For COVID-19, I prefer lozenges because the Zinc is in direct contact with the virus, but oral Zinc is fine. Take 1 or 2 lozenges daily. Oral dose is 30 to 50 mg daily. • Turmeric for mitigating the Cytokine storm is well documented. Take 2 or 3 caps once or twice daily. • NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) promotes the County

This summarizes the basics. Of course, there’s more one can do. However, if these recommendations are implemented as a life-style, I’m confident your resistance to COVID-19 will be greatly enhanced. For those scientifically inclined, I would be happy to provide references to all of the above, except garlic. Don’t forget Sleep, Quality Diet, and Hydration. Wishing you the best of health! ot moving, doing, looking, talking, responding, or at least it feels that way from my perspective! Part of Newton’s third law in physics indicates an object at rest will tend to remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. The problem, however, is that this is not an object, it is a person. Someone who should be going, slowing, stopping, and going again. This person should be doing, walking, talking, looking 38

around, sharing, caring, laughing, and so much more. But for some reason, that person is not moving, not just resting. They are not being still in order to more carefully observe a beautiful moment, an animal that might startle, or a child that might wake. They simply are immobile, inactive, non-responsive. They may well seem stuck in glue or lost inside themselves. Dementia can do this to someone. It can make it almost impossible to get Spring/Summer 2020

Inertia out, to be present, to interact, to use the incoming data. How can those around them become a force that applies just the right amount, the right type, and the right direction of tension, pressure, or interaction to begin activity, interaction, or arousal without using harmful or hurtful force?

Thinking About an Egg Let’s start by thinking about an egg. Like a human, there is a lot more inside than is visible on the surface. And like humans, that shell is rather fragile. What makes a difference when it comes to getting an inert, non-mobile egg to do something? To get it moving? Well, if you use too much force or apply too sharp an edge, you might just end up with a mess. If you turn up the environmental heat, make it boiling hot, you might end up with a hard-boiled egg. The egg is never the same. It is possible that dementia could be doing that to the human being VibrantSeniorOptions.com

inside that fragile shell, but maybe not. Maybe our intensity, frequency, or volume is making it impossible for the person to come out of their shell, to be present and active. It’s just too much out here. But then again, perhaps we have made everything cushy and comfortable, and boring. In that case, why bother coming out, inside is just fine. We can’t be sure whether it’s just too boring to be out here, inside is so much more fascinating, or could the person be percolating inside, waiting to hatch.

Encourage and Foster Emergence So, what makes sense to encourage and foster emergence from the inert state? Perhaps some gentle rocking or familiar rhythms, starting slowly and building in energy or frequency. Music has been shown time and time again to be an amazing catalyst. Whatever we use, we must always be alert for, and seek signals of, change of arousal, changing alertness, small shifts or alterations physiologically, (Continued on Page 40) 39

physically, emotionally, or socially. Sometimes an assisted change of position in space, with support to make the change, can bring the vestibular and visual systems into a higher state of activity. Help someone to bend a leg, stroke a dog, shift weight in a chair, roll to a side, go from supine to sit, or from reclined to upright. Always with support and slowly, always slowly! Perhaps the use of olfactory stimulation, favorite aromas, smells that energize like citrus or mint, coffee, or fresh cut grass or hay could be just the sensory experience to wake the core and start the engine. Maybe vocalizations from someone who is familiar and friendly could stimulate interest and get the gears shifted. If not someone familiar, then 40

perhaps someone who has a good energetic voice that signals, there is something good happening out here and we want you to be part of it. It is possible that animals, sounds of nature or the out-of-doors, life event sounds (like engines, machinery running), or work situation sounds might draw someone into action, if only for a brief period. Whatever method we use, we must also be prepared for the possibility that this is not the right moment, the right setting, the right stimulus, or even coming out and being present (in a way we can appreciate and understand) is not possible. It does not mean that the person may not be taking something in and absorbing it. It could be beyond our ability to interpret, and yet still be happening. It could be we do our best and then we leave it alone, only to find, that after a while, the person comes (Continued on Page 42) Spring/Summer 2020

out of their hidden location and shares something real and meaningful. Or maybe that doesn’t happen. For me, the most important thing in this equation, is not what the person is able to do, but what we can do to help enable the person to be present and find moments of fulfillment in being alive. Sharing those moments with us is a bonus! Offering to be that caring and loving force that gently provides the opportunity to go from a state of being inert to 42

being engaged, if only for a short window, is what each of us must determine our willingness and ability to provide. Positive Approach to Care awareness, knowledge, and skills were created and are used for just this reason.
