Club Highlight: Thursdays in the Park

T

Fitness and Friendships... Rain or Shine!

hough they all met at the Burlington Senior Center, near Maiben Park, the Thursday morning I joined Thursdays in the Park proved to be steps above a stroll in the park. As is the usual case when the TIPsters (Thursdays In the Park) group gather for their weekly walk. Led by Lauren Woodmansee of Recreation Without Borders, this group goes out to explore northwest parks and trails. Each week promises a new location not traveled by this group of couples and singles in the last year. Elevation gain is moderate with no more than 300 feet. This particular week we walked the La-Z-Boy Trail at Little Mountain Park. Who wants to walk alone when there is such a great group to join for travel convenience and with whom to enjoy the time! There is a charge based on five weekly walks…so one is not paying for and committing to six months or a whole year at once. The fee is to help supply the two vans taken to transport 16 to 20 “regulars” for the walks. Not just about walking, this club enjoys sharing life and stories. Most join the group to strike up new friendships and do something they like in common… walk and talk! For many this is just one out of most week days to be involved in exercise programs. The goal? Stay healthy. Keep moving. Be social. Some have been walking and building friendships within this club for eight to twelve years. The TIPsters meet on Thursday mornings at 9 a.m., begin walking around 9:45 and return to Burlington around noon. Of course, the timing is subject to the distance of the destination. And beautiful northwest destinations they are! Trails are located from the Ferndale to Everett areas and are numerous enough to last a year of weekly walking. The club takes a break during the weeks from Thanksgiving to the New Year. However, it was noted, that many in this group get together unofficially during the holiday weeks to keep up their “Thursday In the Park” habit. What do they find to talk about for three to four miles a week? I enjoyed stories of grandchildren, trips local and trips around the world, unique stories of volunteer work, and current opera and theater opportunities. There was a gardener in the group with whom I took the time to quiz about

gardening tips. In other conversations I gleaned tidbits of geology about the Skagit Valley Delta and learned more about the La-Z-Boy Trail. Some made plans for an evening of dinner and theater. Others talked about lunch plans. Many in this group even schedule days beyond Thursday for brown bag luncheons and walks at someone’s home neighborhood. Vibrant Living Adaptability “I used to kick the grandkids’ toys out of the way, but now I can step over them!” -Sharon, Strength and Balance class participant “There’s a position I haven’t been able to get into on the ground while gardening for the past few years, but I just did it over the weekend. Here, let me show you….” -Grace, Strength and Balance class participant, age 91

A

fter 25+ years as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer, I have to say I’m still a big fan of the human body. What is it that I love? Six pack abs? Legs that “go up to there?” Chiseled arms? No. My favorite thing about the human body is its adaptability! Did you realize that your body is designed to get good at whatever you train it to do? Let me say that again- your body is designed to get good at whatever you train it to do! That is the principle of adaptability at work. Present your body with a challenge, and with training it will adapt to be able to meet the challenge. Do you want to be a tightrope walker? Scuba dive? Run a marathon? Climb Mount Everest? They’re all doable. With training.

Eighty-year-old Glenn Koontz does a plank during the Functional Circuit class at Inspire! Fitness in La Conner.

What if your goals are more down-to-earth? What is it you want to do? Pick up a grandchild? Step over grandchildren’s toys in the living room? Climb the stairs to the second floor of your house? Safely exit the tub/shower combo at a hotel? Walk on the beach? Carry a cup of coffee across the room without tripping over the cat? Weed your flower bed and stand back up again? All of these goals can be accomplished by participating in an exercise plan that focuses on the adaptations a body needs to make to build the strength, flexibility, mobility, and stability that is required. Look for a creative class or program that gets you off the machines and using your body in all the various movements that your chosen activities require: pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, squatting, rotating, sitting, standing. There are many options in the area for active aging adults to work toward their goals. Think about the results you want, and look for a program that will help you achieve them. Check out the resources in your area. There are walking groups, Strength and Balance classes, Functional Circuits, dance cardio classes such as Zumba Gold, etc. As we emerge from winter into the longer days and warmer temperatures of spring and summer, my challenge for you is this: take a look at your weekly routine, and ask yourself“what am I training my body to do?” Jennifer Beemer, Certified Personal Trainer Inspire! Fitness, La Conner VibrantSeniorOptions.com

Glossary: Housing & Care (Thursdays in the Park, continued from Page 7)

On the way back to Burlington, I had to ask… “What has all this walking done for your health?” With laughter all around, several attested to happier and healthier lives and strong bones due to fitness planned into their schedule--come rain or shine! When you join Thursdays In the Park, don’t forget to bring a little cash…just in case the return trip to Burlington makes a detour for no-host coffee and snacks! ~ Christine Blankenship, Publisher Vibrant Senior Options See "Club Connections" on Page 8 for information on Thursdays in the Park and other clubs.

Glossary: Housing & Care

Glossary for Housing & Care Advisory & Referral Services, Housing & Care: Services for seniors and families who seek help in selecting senior housing and/or care. An advisor knows the local providers and can recommend solutions, saving a client time and confusion in their search for options. Advisors may also set up appointments and provide tour assistance if desired. Partnering housing and care providers enable these services to be free to seniors and their families. Retirement/Independent Living: Private apartments rented to seniors. Some offer three meals per day. Activity programs and housekeeping may be provided, but residents are capable of independent living. Private pay only. Retirement Communities are maintenance free to seniors. Assisted Living: A community apartment setting for seniors with physical and/or cognitive impairments who may need assistance from trained caregivers.* Meals, housecleaning, and activities to help seniors stay physically active and socially engaged are provided. Trained caregivers 24 hrs/day and Licensed Nursing up to 24 hrs/day. (Non-secured memory care may be available) Adult Family Home: A residence owned or rented by a licensed provider. Room and board, trained caregivers 24 hours a day, and assisted care services for 2 to 6 adults are provided in a home environment.* Licensed Nurses on staff are not required, but may be available. (Non-secured memory care may be available) Memory Care Community: This is special care in a secured community for people who have Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Some are stand-alone Memory Care communities, while others are located within Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing facilities. Trained Caregivers 24 hrs/day and Licensed Nursing up to 24 hrs/day.* Skilled Nursing & Rehab (also known as Nursing Home): A qualified facility that has the staff and equipment to provide round-the-clock skilled nursing care (RNs and LPNs) and rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational, respiratory, and speech therapies. Also included are Social Work services and Medical Director oversight, as well as caregiving staff to assist with personal care needs. Continuing Care Communities: These offer three services in one community location, reducing the need for a senior to move as they age. Three of the four following care levels may be offered: Retirement, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing & Rehab. Affordable Housing: A subsidized apartment rental program for people who are disabled or elderly, including Section 8, HUD, public housing, and tax credit buildings. Medicaid: Some communities (Assisted Living, Adult Family Home, Memory Care, and Continuing Care) may have a Medicaid contract. However, some have a waiting list or minimum private pay terms before accepting a resident with Medicaid. *Trained caregivers assist up to 24 hours per day with daily living needs such as meal preparation, medication assistance, dressing, bathing, transferring, and continence care. Library Review Military Dogs

Join the Ferndale Library Book Group on May 12 for 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate Armed Forces Day with books about military dogs. Try one of these great reads and come ready to share your thoughts! ~ Reviews by Mary Kinser

War Dogs: Tales of Canine Heroism, History, and Love ~ Rebecca Frankel

F

ew civilians are aware of the pivotal role dogs have served in U.S. military history, but this engaging title aims to rectify that. Frankel parlays her interest in war dogs into an entertaining and informative read. Here she examines canine contributions in wartime by telling stories about these incredible animals and the work they’ve done to save lives and restore order. Readers will get behind the scenes with K-9 handlers, learning what goes into keeping these dogs focused and the critical nature of the relationship between human and canine. From dogs that boosted the morale of Civil War soldiers, to canines in the trenches in World War I, to modern-day weapons-seekers, these intelligent and highly trained animals continue to make a difference even after the fighting’s done.

Armed Forces Day ~ Join us May 12th at 2:30 p.m. at the Ferndale Library! Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Marine and His Military

Working Dog ~ Mike Dowling

C

orporal Mike Dowling was 25 when he and his K-9 partner, Rex, landed in Iraq in 2004. Members of the first set of military working dog teams to see combat since Vietnam, Dowling and Rex had received rigorous training before heading to the front lines. Yet this mission – clearing zones rife with explosive devices in the socalled “Triangle of Death” – was anything but a drill. Dowling and Rex had a unique role in reintroducing the presence of working dogs to combat. Dealing with unfamiliar conditions, extreme heat and fear around every corner, the pair came to rely on one another as only an elite team of soldiers could, with a bond that went deeper than their military stripes. Threaded with Dowling’s personal journey toward the career he dreamed of, this heartfelt memoir of loyalty and courage will touch the heart of anyone who’s truly loved an animal.

Putting the Pieces Together For Housing and Care Options

M

aking positive decisions during life’s events and transitions takes research, time, and emotional energy. If you or your loved ones needs for housing and/ or care are changing, here are some questions to consider: ?? Are you puzzled about the variety of senior housing options and levels of care? ?? Are you overwhelmed with the time and research it takes to determine a good fit for your needs and preferences? ?? Do you know the questions to ask to help you make informed decisions? ?? Are there too many pieces to sort through for you or a loved one whose needs are changing?

If any of these questions concern you, consider contacting a Senior Housing and Care Advisor. Why? A Senior Advisor has expertise in knowing what questions to ask you to determine the best options for you or your loved one’s housing and/or care. Listening is one of the most important aspects of any professional advisor. A good advisor has a vision for the next step, which is important in moving towards solutions. All this is at no cost to you. Partnering housing and care providers pay for these services. It is important to find an advisor who is local to your region and familiar with local

housing and care options such as Retirement Living, Assisted Living, Adult Family Homes, Memory Care, and In-Home Care. This enables him or her to better help you explore your options. After meeting with you to learn of your circumstances, an advisor can identify senior housing and care agencies that match your needs and preferences. With this expertise in navigating the maze of information and knowing what to ask and who to ask, they can get you appropriate and up-to-date answers specific to your situation. An advisor maintains current information on the housing and care options he or she points you to, including the range of amenities and services provided, approximate monthly rental fees, care fees, and other important information. A local advisor will recommend Continued on bottom of Page 25

Flying with Brainpower An interview with Bob Wright and Marcia Corey

M

usic playing, candles, two globes, many maps, many books, special travel mementos…such is the welcoming atmosphere in the home of Bob Wright and Marcia Corey. About 10 years ago they moved to Bellingham from Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Familiarizing herself to the Bellingham area, Marcia searched for resources at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center. She found many valuable programs and returned…again and again. Putting her expertise into unique volunteer services, she herself has become a wellspring of knowledge and motivation to the community. Her husband, Bob Wright, is also active in continuing to do what he has always loved to do. But, let’s stay with Marcia for now. She finds meaning and joy in life through helping other people, which shows in several blended professions. One profession began when she purchased 100 acres of land with friends in Idaho and tended a 20-acre organic garden. This evolved into developing a new Saturday market and a food co-op. Between this experience and teaching 5th - 8th grade in a two-room school house, Marcia saw the need for practicing as a Holistic Health Consultant. She then studied further and became a Naturopathic Doctor in Washington D.C., then went on to get a Ph. D. in Naturopathic Medicine. One goal was to help others stay healthy in body and mind. Before we discuss her second main career, it is interesting to note that Marcia’s dad VibrantSeniorOptions.com

flew for Pan American Airlines and the press plane for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon. Anyone remember them? With a father as a pilot and with Marcia being so outgoing, it was natural for her to land a job as manager in the Air Traffic Organization of the Federal Aviation Administration. During her time in this job, she was president of the Technical Women’s Organization and the founder and leader of an award-winning mentor program where she was a motivational trainer for upcoming professionals. Today, Marcia carries all these experiences into her membership on the board of the Whatcom Council on Aging and the advisory committee for the Bellingham Senior Activity Center. She has a Masters degree in Education, which shows up as she leads a group she started called Brainpower. They meet at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center every Wednesday. Brainpower discussions almost always begin with “Today in History,” and end up in topics that have included history, politics, geography, drones, 3-D printers, and chocolate. Marcia says that it is good to challenge the mind with new topics, to think deeper, and to have fun while learning. Expanding on this brainpower group theme, Marcia also volunteers at Adult Day Health with memory impaired clients, where she leads a lively presentation called Travels with Marcia. She states, “I absolutely adore working with that group!” Let’s take this story back into the 1980’s when Marcia met and married a pilot. Of course! Even before completing his Masters degree in Business, Bob chose aviation as his life career. He has been senior executive for General Aviation for the Federal Aviation Administration, . . . (Continued from Page 27) and will receive his Master Pilot Award for 50 years of safe flying this September. He has owned his own plane for 38 of those 50 years. Bob is an avid reader and historian and has taken up writing historical novels under the name of Robert A. Wright (Beyond Ultra, Valhalla Revealed, and a third in the trilogy on the way - The Valhalla Curse). He writes “family sagas and (is) not into macho stick figures.” Check out his first two books at Amazon.com or at Village Books in Fairhaven! As a consummate researcher and travel planner he uses world-wide business trips for touring and collecting information for his novels. Blending career and retirement, Bob continues to travel abroad and currently is an aviation consultant, writes aviation safety articles, and is on workgroups that focus on upgrading pilot standards for general aviation pilots. What do Marcia and Bob enjoy together? Planning trips and traveling in their plane! Marcia says she will always stay in the right seat, not left, with her finger always on the map! Their home walls are lined with décor reminiscing of their trips around the world. My favorite picture in their office is of their airplane wing framing one side with Paris and the Eiffel Tower in the far distance. Bob stated that the picture was taken from as close as they could get to the Eiffel Tower without invading the no-fly zone. A close-up of the tower is not worth an international conflict! Bob states that he is more of a global thinker and likes the discovery of new places and VibrantSeniorOptions.com

things. He sees life from a 40,000 foot aviation view and thinks of world interrelationships. “Pilots are curious thinkers, and they see the planet from a different perspective.” Those who remain in a chair with the technological (social media) world can easily become self-absorbed and lose their perspective of humanity. In the old days, one had to make connections and relationships in real life. While we are on the topic of real life connections, Bob and Marcia want to reignite their work on a book together about the Blue Airways. This is the title of a route of remote towns with general aviation airstrips. Bob says that, after 18 years in Washington, D.C., he likes to visit small, out-of-the way places. Never underestimate those rural towns around the 5000 airstrips of the Blue Airways. Touring Alaska? Flight is the way to travel…that is, if you have your own plane! Bob and Marcia have discovered businesses like a specialty coffee roaster in Oshkosh, Nebraska and an internationally known pianist in a small town in Montana. Who would have thought? Speaking of thoughts…How do Bob and Marcia define their retirement? It’s a continuation of what you’ve always loved to do. This gets better as they develop their retirement years. How do they tend to their health? Bob systematically walks his route around Fairhaven, while Marcia works out with the guidance of a trainer. Always continue to grow in physical and mental health! What about their relationship? Together, Bob and Marcia enjoy adventure, relationships, art, theater, music and opera. Since Marcia retired they rarely travel without each other, and they look forward to continuing the future travels and coauthorship of Blue Airways. I know I will be watching Village Books and waiting … By Christine Blankenship, Publisher Vibrant Senior Options 31

Better Hearing Equals Better Health This is a very comfortable appointment where you will also learn tips and tricks for positive interactions with friends and family members if you're beginning to experience hearing problems or miscues.

Y

Tell me a secret!

ou do all you can to take care of yourself. You have good diet and exercise habits, you know your cholesterol numbers; you watch your blood pressure. Annual vision tests and dental check-ups are the norm. Colonoscopy after age 50...So, when is the last time you had a hearing screening? The Better Hearing Institute recommends that everyone over the age of 55 have an annual hearing consultation. During your visit you'll go over your family's hearing health history, your noise exposure (recreational and industrial), and a comprehensive visual exam of your ear to rule out pathologies that possibly could be affecting your hearing. After that a measurement will be made of your hearing, both in pitch (frequency) and intensity (loudness).

36

People with better hearing healthcare experience not only better communication and more positive interactions, they are known to have more intimacy in relationships, higher earnings and more confidence than people with untreated hearing loss. They also enjoy lower blood pressure, better cognitive functions, and more delayed onset of dementia and Alzheimer's. It all starts with a simple hearing consultation. If you already wear hearing devices it is recommended that you have an annual hearing screening so that your hearing provider ensures the best outcomes from your investment in better overall health. You'll be hearing the return on that investment for many years to come! Diane Fox Board-Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist All About Hearing, Inc. Burlington, WA

Brutal Honesty and Happy Pets

H

ello my fellow senior pet owners! Isn't being our age great?? Discounts at Coastal feed store, you don't worry if someone likes your hairdo, and, for most of us, we like ourselves more each passing year. The older I get the more I value and treasure loyalty and brutal honesty from my friends, which brings me to the point of this article.

As a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) I spent most of my life working at various Veterinary clinics. As springtime approaches there are always problems we would see at the clinic. Most commonly, but less and less so as people become more educated, we would see seriously ill dogs and cats that ate Slug Bait. There are now readily available "pet safe" slug baits--mostly pellets which are less tempting than the old "meal" or flakes. Use them! An animal suffering from slug bait poisoning is a critically ill patient. Even if their chances for survival are good, it is very expensive. I think that is one reason that pet ownership for us seniors is slightly unique. Most of us have quite limited financial support and we cannot afford huge vet bills. Another Now that is brutal! common poisoning in the spring and summer is Rose Food/Insecticide. Why animals eat it 38

is an age-old head scratcher. But they do, and it requires critical (and expensive) care. Another common emergency is HBC. Hit By Car. When Spring fever brings people out walking and visiting neighbors, their pets have spring fever too. So, beware that your dog can run out into the street while you are being distracted by the daffodils coming up or the gorgeous rhododendron breaking into bloom. In general, if it is "not good" for you, it is likely not good for your dog or cat. I One piece of advice I find very personal is for the price shopper clients. I truly, TRULY understand the budge limits. But one of the best investments you could make is to have a loyal and regular relationship with your Veterinarian. Many potentially fatal problems, if caught early by your Vet at an annual check-up appointment, can be slowed, corrected or removed. Plus, there is a world of advice and help from qualified, experienced Veterinarians and staff available. But if they haven't seen your pet in 3 years because you have visited to 2 or 3 or 4 other clinics in that time they cannot, by law, give advice over the phone. So find a Veterinarian that you are comfortable with and be a regular. Your pets will benefit from a loyal relationship. For many of us, our pets are our family now that spouses may have passed on, children have started their own lives and families, and retirement changes our social circles. So make friends at the dog park. Or think about Therapy Dog work at a retirement or nursing home. Or simply make friends walking around the block with your happy dog. Animals are God's gift to us to enjoy and take care of. Cristine Cameron, LVT and her Canine Friends Spring/Summer 2015
