Overcoming Myths About Active Aging

You’re

supposed to be depressed at this age, right? There’s nothing to live for after, say, 55 or 60, anyway.

Ha! That’s one of the most common myths mature people face. In fact, research shows the happiest time of life is 65 to 79.

Like many myths, ageist nonsense like this persists. Millions of active agers who are fit and determined to enjoy life prove it every day. We’re here to help you do the same. So, come in and start busting myths with us now!

Myth: The end of cognitive development Turns out, you can “teach an old dog new tricks.” A 2014 NIH study, showed that pursuing new interests regardless of age can stimulate the brain and improve memory. Keeping your mind active and working on learning new skills as you age helps you to build a “cognitive reserve,” which allows the brain to become more adaptable and potentially compensate for any age-related memory challenges in the future.

Myth: Dementia or other memory disorders are inevitable with aging.

“Mild forgetfulness” is to be expected as we age, and occasionally misplacing your keys or mixing up appointments on your calendar

does not directly correlate to a memory loss disorder. Continuing to stimulate your brain with new activities as you grow older. Pursuing interests like reading, painting, playing games like Sudoku or chess, and listening to and playing music can keep the mind active.

Myth: Depression is normal and to be expected in older adults

Studies show that older adults are less likely to be depressed than younger adults. Depression can, of course, occur in senior citizens. However, seniors are also are likely to benefit from having long-lasting personal relationships and joy from happy memories acquired throughout life.

Myth: Aging adults should skip strenuous exercising to avoid injury

A decrease in bone density comes with aging and thus a fear of over-exertion leading to injury. But physical activity can support both physical and mental health, helping to stave off health problems such as obesity and diabetes and boost serotonin in the brain. Whether you take a walk in the park with your children and grandchildren or choose another activity like golfing, swimming, or biking, making exercise a part of your regular routine can improve physical health and ensure independence.

Over The Counter & Direct to Consumer Hearing Aids – a Summary

Diane Fox, Owner All About Hearing

There are many ways to purchase or receive hearing aids these days, from your Audiologist or Hearing Specialist, DirectTo-Consumer (DTC) and now, the newest way, Over-The-Counter from your pharmacy or grocery store. Here are the pros and cons of each.

Direct to Consumer (DTC)

These are online suppliers of hearing devices that sell to those who want to save

money and forego in-office testing. Most suppliers have an abbreviated evaluation and the aids are sent to you ‘pre-programmed’ by their Specialist. Pros: Prices are at times lower than through Audiological offices and there are ‘on-call Specialists’. Many aids come with an app for adjustments for fine-tuning. Cons: Online testing can vary by significant amounts which invariably lead to inaccurate (Continued on Page 8 )

programming. Fit is invariably sacrificed, as you may receive a one-size-fits-all result with no accommodations for ear size and individuality. Pricing can range from $200$1000, or more for each hearing aid/amplifier.

Over-The-Counter (OTC)

These are hearing aids that are available through your local Pharmacy. They are sold for a mild to moderate hearing loss, and are again a one-size-fits-most solution for costconscious shoppers. Pros: There are no testing requirements and for all of the people who have long felt that there should be a more cost-effective hearing solution, these might be for you. Cons: There are no testing requirements. There are no red-flag warnings. It’s pretty much a one-size fits all device with a limited fitting range but apps are generally available to adjust your aids with.

Audiology & Hearing Clinics

These destinations offer the most up-to-date testing and verification methods including air & bone conduction, discrimination & Speech-in-Noise testing. There is education

regarding wear and care of your instruments as well as instruction with Apps and remote care and 30 to 60-day risk free trials. We also offer follow-ups for continued care. Pros: Caring professionals are educated in the types of hearing loss, red-flag warnings and the ways that hearing care integrates to over-all health care. Individualized care plan for your needs and expectations. We fit your devices in a prescriptive method with RealEar Verifications. We also handle insurance claims. Cons: Cost may be higher initially than other methods of acquisition, but satisfaction and wear time are also increased substantially compared to self-fit methods.

In an environment of autonomy and selfreliance, there are many areas where we can take a more hands on approach to our daily lives. But whether it’s your hearing specialist, optician, dentist, electrician or plumber, sometimes it pays to go to the experts. Just saying…

Low-Dose CT Lung Screening Available

November is Lung Cancer Awareness

month, and low-dose CT lung screenings make it easy to catch symptoms of lung cancer early.

CT Scan for Early Detection

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Early detection is a proven and successful strategy to reduce lung specific mortality. Lowdose computed tomography (CT) lung cancer screening is able to detect lung nodules better than a chest X-ray and maintains a relatively low radiation exposure. If there are any nodules detected, recommendations for further procedures are made.

“Most of the time, lung cancer has no symptoms at all until the disease is very advanced,” said Thoracic Surgeon Richard Leone, MD, PhD, FACS. “CT scanning is the best way to identify early, treatable lung cancers. The newer CTs are amazingly good in finding tiny nodules.”

Low-Dose CT Screening

Low-dose CT screening, available at both Skagit Valley Hospital and Cascade Valley Hospital, is now covered by Medicare for highrisk patients ages 55 to 77.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that healthy adults at high risk for lung cancer talk to their primary care provider about screening with low-dose CT.

Who should be screened?

• Are you a current or former smoker between the ages of 55 and 74?

• On average, did you smoke one pack per day for 30 years or two packs per day for 15 years?

• Has it been less than 15 years since you quit smoking?

• Has it been more than a year since your last CT scan?

How Does the CT Scan Study Work?

The patient lies on the CT scanner and will slide in and out of the CT scanner. The scan itself takes about 30 seconds. There is no special preparation and no contrast is needed.

“It’s so important for people to know about the CT screenings,” said Robin Schultz, who was diagnosed with a lung issue that was not cancer, but did require surgery, after having a scan. “It’s very quick and easy.”

For more information or for a referral for a low-dose CT screening, talk to your primary care provider.

Many patients report that the Dynamic Brace helps to substantially reduce their pain, thereby allowing them to increase their functional activities. We have found that the Dynamic Brace often aids in improving balance, increasing participation in activities, increasing functional mobility, and has even allowed some marginally functional patients to run. It can be used for people with damage to the foot/ankle complex and even some partial foot amputees. The same carbon technology utilized in the dynamic AFO is also seen in our patented Motivity partial foot prosthesis.

Cornerstone Prosthetics and Orthotics

With the new and innovative Symphonie Aqua System, it is now possible to create more accurate socket casts for our amputees – by recording the full load of the residual limb while it is in the prosthetic socket. This actual, real life simulation produces a perfectly fit cast. Better casting equals a better socket and outcome. Our patients are thrilled: everything is possible again! From weightlifting, mountain biking, snowboarding and kickboxing. The Symphonie Aqua System harnesses the power of water to create a more accurate and comfortable socket.

New Technoloty in Drop Foot Braces

Recovering stroke patients have access to the drop foot braces in order to increase mobility. These lightweight carbon fiber braces improve walking by reducing, preventing, and limiting movement of the lower leg and foot by supporting weak muscles.

These are some of the new advanced technology we have available to our patients at Cornerstone Prosthetics and Orthotics. Reach out to us at 425.339.2559 to schedule your first appointment.

THROUGHOUT LIFE’S HEALTH JOURNEY

As friends, family or loved ones age, unexpected events can derail even the healthiest person. Often friends and family need to step in and support when they least expect it.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is an interdisciplinary medical approach to helping people living with any serious or debilitating illness like cancer, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.

Palliative Care can help you achieve a higher quality of life and support your family as you cope with serious illness.

Patients with terminal illness who engage the Palliative Care team early, generally have an easier journey with better outcomes.”

Hospice Care

Our Hospice Care teams provide family-centered, holistic, and compassionate end-of-life care for people with terminal illness. Hospice is MORE than just end of life care. Our team works with each patient to develop positive goals for each circumstance.

Paul Harvey - The Rest of the Story

Here he also broadcasted from many dances and band remotes, with names like Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and Frank Sinatra. KXOK’s evening voice wrapped up with a flourish, “This is your obedient servant, Paul Aurandt...good night!”

Asfar back as elementary school, I would listen to KGMI-AM radio with my mother as we drove around for errands and appointments. We lived in Everson, while most of our excursions landed us in Bellingham, giving us 30 minutes travel time each way. During these years, my favorite show began with, “Hello, America! This is Paul Harvey! [pause] Stand by for news!”

Early Beginnings in Tulsa

While his friends spent evenings outside playing ball, a very young Paul Harvey Aurandt was listening to radio voices, such as Lowell Thomas, whose cadence was steady and clean, and news was an eclectic mix of stories. Enthralled with radio, the entrepreneurial Paul also built crystal radio receivers with discarded cigar boxes, a homemade tuner conductor coil, and a piece of wire for an antenna. He made and sold sets at double his expenditure.

By the early age of 16 Paul became one of KVOO’s (Tulsa) more popular announcers. Listeners loved his distinctive voice and dramatic use of the pause. With Paul, a sunny weather report would sound fascinating and a routine account from City Hall was spiced up.

Paul Harvey Aurandt in St. Louis

In 1940 Paul worked with KXOK in St. Louis.

It was also at this station where Paul met fellow newscaster, Lynne “Angel” Cooper…. He proposed on their first date, and she accepted a year later. The rest, as they say, is history. https://www.mentalfloss.com

Trouble in Montana

In 1942, the couple moved to Missoula, Montana, to work for KGVO-AM. It was here where Paul used his unique, staccato voice to further carve out his reporting niche. It was also here where, after a short time, his boss, Mr. Mosby, told him, “You have a silly and funny sounding voice. You’d make a great salesmanyou can sell anything, but Paul, honestly, you’re never going to make it in the news business. You don’t have a believable sound for news. It’s distracting. People won’t trust it. Why don’t you join our sales team? The job is yours—but I’m sorry, you’re done on the air here at KGVO.” Years later, with no bitterness towards his boss, Paul would credit Mosby with pushing him up by pushing him out.

A Name Change

After WWII, Paul Harvey Aurandt changed his radio name to Paul Harvey, using his middle name rather than his last name. This was a common practice amongst famous names who wanted a more melodious-sounding name or to avoid misspellings and mispronunciations.

treatment. The TrueBeam LINAC is a highly versatile technology that gives radiation oncologists the ability to tailor radiation therapy treatments for each patient’s condition. The machine shapes the beam to match the 3D shape of the tumor and features real-time imaging allowing clinicians to treat tumors with accuracy measured in submillimeters. It generates 3D images in 60% less time than other imaging technologies. It also has the potential for a 25% reduction in X-ray dose for the patient.

“With the new LINAC machine, we are giving our patients the best, most advanced care possible,” said Dr. Cha. “Patients do not need to leave our community to get the treatment they need. Our entire team at the Cancer Center is here to provide medical and emotional support to patients through the challenges

associated with a cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.”

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center

In addition to the new linear accelerator, PeaceHealth St. Joseph has invested significant resources to grow its Cancer Center. Patients will find upgraded, same-day lab results, more staff to help them navigate their diagnoses and greater capacity for infusion services. These investments, supported by a dedicated team of Cancer Center clinicians, therapists and other caregivers, ensure patients get the best possible care close to home.

Navigating the Memory Care Journey

Navigating the journey of dementia care is a highly individualized process, but you may find peace in knowing that others have walked this path, hand in hand with loved ones impacted by dementia. In general, dementia care and support are often referred to as “Memory Care.” Memory Care is more than a place, it is a philosophy and a specialized approach to care that can be provided in different community settings.

Planning for Memory Care

This is not a one size fits all equation. What works for your neighbor’s husband may not be a fit for your mother. One person may be social and enjoy group activity, while another may appreciate their solitude

Other factors relate to the dementia itself. Each person may present different symptoms, behaviors, and levels of care needs based upon

their individual diagnosis and stage of dementia. Also keep in mind that not all dementia is progressive. This is an important consideration which can help guide sustainable care planning, with a goal to minimize challenging transitions in care and housing. We do know that consistency and routine are positive anchor points in memory care and can be especially important for those affected by dementia. If a move is required now, will another change in place and care relationships be required in the future?

Navigating the Options

Our society has a variety of options to fit individual dementias and preferences. A range of specialized memory care options and environments may include:

• In-Home dementia care with caregiver support

• Adult Day Programs & overnight Respite Stays

• Adult Family Homes

• Assisted Living Communities

• Secured Memory Care Communities for those more advanced in their behaviors and dementia care needs.

Aligning Personal Considerations

We are a society of individuals and personalities. Aligning personal considerations are key factors in choosing your approach to memory care. These considerations include interests, preferences, and schedule as well as culture. Always keep in mind the quality of life and individual rights as a guide to selecting the least restrictive environment that is best able to meet the level of care required.

Influence of News Broadcasting

In a CNN interview, Larry King asked Paul Harvey, “…Do you think you’re a salesman?”

Harvey responded. “I sure hope so, Larry,

because I’m trying with all my might to compensate the people who put their money where my mouth is ... I want to try to keep our American people sold on their “isms,” because we in the news business are so constantly

And, of course, it’s still the one place in the world where people are standing in line and waiting to get in - instead of braving stormy seas in small boats, dying, to get out.”

Navigating the Memory Care Journey

(Continued from Page 33)

Exploring the Environment

If exploring congregate settings, consider who the neighbors and caregivers will be. Are other residents and care providers generally calm and pleasant, or is the atmosphere tense, chaotic, or lonely? Is the environment warm and inviting or cold and institutional? Is there access to the outdoors and natural light? Even at advanced stages of dementia, a person can pick up on these social, emotional, and environmental cues and respond accordingly. A calm and low stimuli (yet engaging) environment makes for a welcoming home. A streamlined, structured, and predictable care setting and routine will maximize the memory care experience. As a society, we are gradually making a departure from the old fashioned, institutionalized, long term care settings, and striving for more homelike, inclusive environments, even at high

levels of care. Caregiver support, education, care and enrichment planning, and environmental design and technology are also components of quality memory care.

Filtering Decisions for Memory Care

As a family member and responsible party, it is always helpful to filter any major decisions regarding transitions in care through the lens of friends and others who have traveled this path before. Also seek a Geriatric Care Manager/Elder Care Consultant who can act as a sounding board, share resources, and offer support throughout your memory care journey.

Senior Cranky Moments

Baby Boomers, the forever young generation, are turning elderly, and it is a constant shock for most of us. I’m now into my seventh decade of life, but feel like my mind is still in the Woodstock era. Remember Woodstock? Joan Baez? Jimi Hendrix?

A friend of mine, in the same age bracket, is moving to Woodstock, Alabama. I have been poking fun at her for moving to Woodstock. Ha, ha, what a name for a town. She is taking it well, but then I realized no one young today remembers the connection to the upper New York festival of hippies and drugs. That was way back in 1969. Probably a good thing, too. Along with some phrases you don’t hear any more like “Far out. Dig it. Keep on truckin’.”

Moments at Hobby Lobby

I was in Hobby Lobby recently and couldn’t find a certain item. I asked a young sales person, “Do you have any tongue depressors?” She stared, then asked me to repeat. I said, “Tongue depressors?” A blank look. I pointed to my tongue. “Tongue . . .depressors.” An older sales person came up beside us and said, “She means craft sticks. They used to call them tongue depressors.”

“Oh, craft sticks! Sure.” With a quizzical expression, the young woman led me to the right aisle, and I followed meekly, reminding myself to update vocabulary from the 1950s. For sure, doctors don’t check people’s mouths with those sticks, anymore.

Moments at Doctor’s Office

I was in for a doctor appointment, as most Baby Boomers now frequent doctors’ offices as often as going to Walmart. One of the receptionists in the waiting room pleasantly said, “Now just sit over there, dear.”

I did, but suddenly felt ancient, thinking I must look old. She called me dear. The other receptionist handed me some forms. “Honey, just fill these out.”

I did, but felt crankiness rising at the word “honey.” I told my husband, Ron, later, and he said, “Some people just say “honey,” you know. I call you ‘sweetie’ all the time, don’t I?”

I said, “I know, but you are my husband. She doesn’t know me from Timbuktu.” He just snorted. Of course, I have used that phrase about Timbuktu before, and young people look blank. Timbuktu? What’s that?

Testing Moments

I was asked at another doctor appointment if I wanted to attempt a 5-minute treadmill test or take a chemical test, instead. The middleaged doctor said, “I recommend the chemical test because most people your age can’t do the treadmill.”

I took it as a challenge. I had to show this man a thing or two. People my age are not ready for the grave, yet! I told him politely that I rode a bicycle regularly. He did not look impressed. “Are you sure you want to do this, ma’am?”

Fired up, I said “Of course! I can do this!” Following him into a room, I started getting nervous. Maybe I had spoken too hastily. Maybe I would fall off sideways. Maybe I would break my head open or have a heart attack. Well, too late now.

I gingerly got onto the treadmill, and the doctor pressed his hand against my back, I guess to keep me steady. The technician held one of my arms. They looked worried, tense. I grit my teeth and said, “Go!”

Senior Cranky Moments

(Continued from Page 46)

The first couple of minutes was OK, but then the incline became steep. I gripped the bars so hard I probably bent them. My mouth dropped open, gasping. I stared hard out the window.

Moment to Not Give Up

The technician announced the seconds. “Seventy-five more seconds! Do you want to stop?” I shook my head, determined to die before giving up. “Ten seconds! Are you OK?” I nodded, grim. Finally, I finished, and in triumph, slowly and carefully got off. The doctor and technician had large smiles. One patted my shoulder. “Good going, ma’am!”

Cloud 9 Moment

I went home on Cloud 9. “Ron!” I said happily, “I did the treadmill! And people our age

don’t usually do it! It’s all that bike riding!”

Ron said, “Well, good for you.”

Moment of Report

A few days later, the medical report on my treadmill test appeared in my online chart. It said “Minimum stage two achieved.”

My happiness deflated like a punctured flat tire. “Minimum stage two? That’s all? Good grief, how many stages are there?”

Ron put his arm around me. “Calm down. You passed, didn’t you? You are still my sweetie, you know.”
