reetings to our readers! Thank You for reading our resource guide/magazine to find educational articles related to health and well-being…and for considering our Directories of businesses that serve seniors to help meet any needs you or a loved one may have. See Table of Contents on Page 5.
This past Summer flew by as each of the seasons tend to do. Summer becomes Autumn becomes Winter becomes Spring. As the earth hurls through space at 67,000 miles per hour, making a complete orbit around the Sun, we measure another year gone by and more memories are tucked away in our brain to reflect on. It reminds me of a 1959 song by the Byrds called “Turn, Turn, Turn” based on Ecclesiastes 3. “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” This past year or so has reminded me of how precious relationships are. It’s all too easy to let the news of each day dictate emotions. But amidst the changing times and tides, I recognize the importance of one-on-one relationships – in our families, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, churches, and communities. Thinking back over the years, I recall stories from my Grandpa Donald Blankenship and others of his generation who spoke about The Roaring Twenties (1920’s), The Great Depression, The Kansas Dust Bowl of the 2
1930’s, WWII, post war economic expansion, Glen Armstrong’s first step on the Moon, etc. There were times of both economic uncertainty and stability. One of the things that brings a smile to my face were stories told that expressed how people were interconnected. Neighbors that helped neighbors build a house or raise a barn. Entertainment that was relationship driven, like going to a local grange hall or ball room for dancing. The stories were of people helping people, families helping families. Reminds me of a famous piece of prose from the 17th Century: “No man is an island, Entire of itself, Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were...” (John Donne, 1624) At least one take-a-way from this poem is the importance of not being isolated, but rather interconnected. It encourages me, and I hope you as well, to get to know a neighbor or two. In these current times, it may be an in-person visit or on a Zoom or video chat. And although we won’t see everything eye to eye, rather than looking down we can look up (metaphorically) and see each other as another human being with value. We wish you well this Fall and Winter… and hope to connect again next Spring and Summer too! Would you like to receive our semi-annual publication in your mailbox? Reminisce: Watching a Baby Grow Christine Blankenship, Publisher
I
t is with great joy that we introduce you to Annabelle, our first grandchild! She was born March, 2021, and has brought us grandparents sheer delight! However, delighted as her parents are, they have less appreciation in the odd hours of the early morning - very early mornings! The last of our own children just turned 18, and now we look at the beginning of another generation. It is with different eyes that we look at parenting over the past 25 years. We admire the diligence and teamwork of Annabelle’s Mommy and Daddy as they tread these new waters in life - the calm and the storms. It is easy to forget how quickly a baby changes
in six months. From the very beginning, this child showed certain characteristics and a personality of her own. Yes, this is Grandma’s payback to Annabelle’s mommy! This person, human being, this baby girl is worth every sleepless night and all the care and nurture she needs. I didn’t realize how self-centered I could be until I needed to care for my own completely dependent little person. Yes, a person is a person, no matter how small! As for Annabelle, well, she is charming and keeps us, her grandparents, watching and laughing. Because we don’t see her every day, we notice growth and mental development every time we visit. For example, one week she lays on her blanket and watches her small world go by. The next week she is able to roll from her front to her back. Then she would get angry and loud, because she could’t figure out how to roll back onto her tummy again. As you can guess, she now freely rolls at will to reach a desired object. And her reach is growing as she experiments with scooting on her stomach and thus expanding her world more. Should I break it to her parents that “watching her like a hawk” has only just begun? I probably don’t need to at this point. Annabelle’s mind continues to expand. We all know that babies quickly learn to immitate sounds and actions. However, we forget how quickly they figure out how to make adults (Continued on Page 9 )

How Exercise Is Key to Overall Wellness (and Quality of Life)
DOn’t let age DOn’t let age
Anthony Hamilton, Ageless Fitness
Y
ou know that exercise is the key to physical fitness, especially later in life. But did you also know that fitness is, in turn, the key to wellness, or our overall wellbeing, as we age? That’s right. Having strength, stamina and agility well after 50 is integral to maintaining our quality of life at any age. Not only does it improve our physical health, but fitness also is the bedrock of maintaining the other components of wellness, including our emotional and spiritual lives. We’ve always been told if we have our health, we have everything. If we’re fit, we can maintain our independence and zest for living at any stage of life. How much is enough? Surprisingly not much! 150 min a week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise has shown to have great benefit in improving quality of life. Examples of moderate activities: Walking, riding bike and water aerobics. Examples of Vigorous activities: Hiking up hill, circuit training with weights, aerobics, and energetic dancing. Need a push? Ageless Fitness clients work with certified Functional Aging Specialists. We help active aging clients stay active and pain free. imitate them! The more she shines that delightful smile, the more we smile back. I must admit to immitating her blowing raspberry sounds. Also, she has figured out that if she drops something, she can whine and someone will stop a full-blown storm by retrieving the object for her especially that pacifier. At this point, it looks like her own secret experiment is to determine the best way to train her adults. VibrantSeniorOptions.com
Her parents have quickly caught on to this manipulation thing. They cuddle her, feed her, show her the great outdoors, and talk to her about the new things in her world. However, she is denied certain things, just to keep her safe. In addition, she is denied certain things such as pulling hair or eyeglasses off a person. She greatly disagrees with this kind of “polite society” restrictions. In spite of all this, it is obvious that she loves Mommy and Daddy. We are proud of all three of them! S
troke is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is also a major cause of serious disability for adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The good news is that 80 percent of strokes are preventable by making slight lifestyle adjustments, such as controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels and taking prescribed medications. Brain Attack A stroke is sometimes called a brain attack. It happens in one of two ways: An ischemic stroke (when the blood supply to the brain is blocked) or hemorrhagic stroke (when a blood vessel breaks inside the brain). There are different treatments based on the type of stroke a person is experiencing and when the symptoms start.

Health has a partnership with Swedish/ Providence for the telestroke program. Skagit Valley Hospital has been a partner with the telestroke program for many years and, as of May 2021, Cascade Valley Hospital went live with the program. Video and Audio Technology Using video and audio technology, the program allows for 24/7 remote access to specialized neurology services and specialists with Swedish and Providence for patients who need an urgent consult. This specialized, immediate consultation, in conjunction with the expertise of Skagit Regional Health’s providers, allows the team to collaborate to make critical decisions about the appropriate treatment plan for stroke patients.

Telestroke Program: Conduit to Emerging Treatment This partnership provides a conduit to emerging treatment for a stroke such as endovascular treatment made available through this partnership. Endovascular treatment, available at Swedish and Providence, is done only by cerebral vascular experts who use catheterization treatment. These procedures open vessels in the brain, similar to those procedures for coronary artery disease that open vessels in the heart. With the telestroke program, the team is able to identify appropriate candidates for these procedures and transport patients by helicopter to ensure urgent evaluation and additional treatment. But if the mitral valve becomes floppy or leaky and won’t seal properly, blood leaks back into the heart instead of continuing out of it. It’s a condition known as mitral valve regurgitation, with symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, coughing, and heart palpitations, among others.
There are several reasons. One is simply degradation as people age, causing the valve to tear.
Mitral Valve Repair Fortunately, cardiologists can repair the valve to reduce or stop severe forms of the condition. This traditionally requires open-heart surgery, but now, a less-invasive procedure called the MitraClip is available for qualifying patients at Bellingham’s PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. The MitraClip procedure uses a catheter inserted into a small groin incision. The catheter, which includes the small clip device, is then guided through a leg vein to reach the heart, where the valve is clipped to minimize or stop occurring leakage. PeaceHealth St. Joseph began offering MitraClip in July of 2021. Three patients 16

So why does the mitral valve become dysfunctional in the first place?
Heart failure, leading to enlargement of the heart muscle, and other serious illnesses that affect the heart can also adversely impact the valve’s function. Who’s a good candidate? For patients with mitral valve regurgitation, milder versions can be treated with medications. But when severe forms of the condition necessitate surgery, open-heart surgery is still the standard of care for optimal mitral valve repair. Due to advanced age, heart or lung conditions, however, open-heart procedures simply provide too much risk of complication for some patients. For them, the MitraClip procedure is ideal. Patients for the procedure must also be free of infection and blood clots, be able to tolerate blood thinners, and have a mitral valve condition that’s not caused by a case of rheumatic fever. The screening process of qualification includes diagnostic tests like blood work and an angiogram, as well as both an echocardiogram and a transesophageal echocardiogram.

The MitraClip procedure The MitraClip procedure can last three to four hours, a timeframe similar to the open-heart version of the valve fix. However, the recovery time of MitraClip is typically much quicker. “Patients are usually able to get up out of bed after about three hours,” Dr. King says. “Usually, they go home the following day.” Moving forward, the use of the MitraClip procedure in Whatcom County will save some VibrantSeniorOptions.com

of the most vulnerable mitral valve patients a lot of time and worry. “Previously, our patients were having to go down to a different center in Seattle to get this procedure done,” Dr. King says. “Now, having it here…it’s a pretty awesome thing for the community.” Patients who have concerns about mitral regurgitation or are interested in MitraClip should contact their primary care physician or cardiologist to learn more. The world’s confusing enough, but finding a Medicare Plan shouldn’t be. We make finding a plan simple.
1-866-937-6565
Glossary: Medicare and Medicaid/COPES Medicare: A federal program that provides health insurance coverage for seniors in the U.S. who have paid into the benefit for a certain number of periods. There are different parts of Medicare that individuals can purchase and individuals must choose which plan type they would like. Typically, individuals become eligible at the age of 65, but individuals under the age of 65 with certain disabilities may be eligible. Medicaid/COPES: A state program that provides comprehensive care management and helps pay for personal care, home delivered meals, home health care, adult day services, respite, transportation and other services for older adults in their homes. COPES may also help pay for care in senior housing and care options such as assisted living, memory care, adult family homes, and skilled nursing homes. However, not all care homes are licensed for Medicaid/ COPES. The ones that do accept Medicaid/COPES usually require a minimum of two years private pay before allowing Medicaid/COPES funding. 22

hat are the experiences that bring true joy in life? This core question is essential, yet may be challenging to define on behalf of our senior family members and clients. Many homebound seniors spend their days alone, watching television and eating frozen dinners. Visits and outings are often focused around medical needs, errands, and tasks. The pandemic has only magnified this phenomenon. While it is easy to prioritize a doctor’s appointment, how do we plan for and even schedule “Joy”? Joy is Unique to Individuals The experience of joy is unique to each individual. Some important considerations include a person’s historical sense of identity, culture, pace, and rhythm in life, and the associated artifacts, foods, traditions and rituals. What was their lifelong passion? What do they reminisce about? These elements contribute valuable information that can help bring joy into the present moment when applied to care, environment, and activities. What inspires joy can be quite simple…birdwatching, a lovely sky, afternoon tea, fresh flowers, ice cream, a prized fishing pole, strawberries, the woods, a letter, gardening, a companion animal, a colorful basket of yarn, favorite music, or a shared moment. Care Planing for Individualized Joy When incorporated into care planning and living spaces, these historical preferences can help us in the delivery of individualized, quality care and also bring a dynamic sense of life and activity into the daily environment, engaging the senses in the moment and stimulating 32

A regularly scheduled delivery of favorite items and meals can offer a welcome and consistent surprise to the recipient as well as supplemental nutrition. Technology can offer ways to connect from afar. A living space can be decorated in meaningful ways, highlighting personal artifacts that stimulate a sense of comfort, joy, pride, and legacy. These joyful items and activities may also act as a conduit for reminiscence and engagement between family, care providers, and seniors, leading to a deeper and more authentic connection in the moment. Just a few acts of intention, communication, and coordination by family and care providers can result in a higher quality of care and a more joyful life. 10 Ideas for Bringing Joy Back • Cue the music: A woman with advanced dementia who barely speaks, may find her voice and sing clearly and joyfully when she hears her favorite song from the past. • Dig in the dirt: A master gardener who now resides in a nursing home, might appreciate a friendly visitor who brings along some live plants to pot together and display for daily enjoyment. • Take a scenic field trip: A nature lover who (Continued on Page 33) Fall-Winter, 2021-2022

Bringing Joy Back (Continued from Page 32) is homebound may enjoy an outing into nature, to sit by a shore or visit the woods. Transportation and a companion caregiver can readily be coordinated to accompany and support the journey if needed. • Decorate with intention: Hang a lovely stained glass ornament, birdfeeder, mobile, twinkle lights, live plant, and windchimes in a room or nearby window to create a sense of movement, life and interest. Ask the individual to help decide where to place the items, engaging and empowering them with choice. • Photographs: Load a digital frame or framed photos next to the bedside or favorite chair with photos of loved ones, pets, or images (landscapes, animals, sports, travel, etc.) that personally resonate or elicit a peaceful or joyful response! VibrantSeniorOptions.com
• Enrichment visits: On a regular basis, arrange for a visiting therapy animal, musician, artist, Chaplain, someone to read and write letters, go for a walk, or share some porch-time together. This can be done by volunteers, neighbors, a hired companion caregiver, or a student or family member. • Tradition and Ritual: Create new traditions that mimic ones from the past: afternoon tea, Sunday dinner, weekend drives, game nights, etc. This can be something that is done with a family member, or written into the care plan with a caregiver providing the regularly scheduled activity • Mail a thoughtful card: Write several postcards or letters at once, and mail one
weekly. The cards and letters can be visibly displayed, and enjoyed over and over again

t’s not easy being a family caregiver: enormous responsibility, constant worry, continual vigilance. When the person you’re caring for is prone to wander off and possibly become lost, the task becomes even more overwhelming. Such is the case with the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Technology Provides a Safety Net If a person with dementia wanders outdoors and is lost for more than 24 hours, their chance of survival drops to 50% due to the risk of exposure. As a result, a lost person with Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related illness represents a critical medical emergency. Thanks to the development and expansion of technology designed to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable citizens in our community, Project Lifesaver provides a critical increase in search and rescue capability to search for lost loved ones while simultaneously decreasing the stress on caregivers and family.

Providing Seniors with a Vibrant, Missional and Purposeful Lifestyle Through Every Phase of their Golden Years.
21
Independent Living - The common thread that connects our residents is the overwhelming joy they experience by living and thriving in a vibrant purposeful Christ-centered community. Our residents have found the freedom to actively engage and pursue the things in life that matter most. Spending quality time with family, getting out and traveling the world and giving back to the community through volunteering are just a few of the many things enjoyed by our Warm Beach Senior Community residents. Assisted Living - Designed for seniors who may not need the full array of services provided by a skilled nursing center, but do need help and support with the activities of daily living, our caring and dedicated staff members provide round-the-clock assistance while encouraging residents to maintain a high level of independence. Skilled Rehab and Nursing - Whether our residents come for a few days or for the rest of their lives, they receive excellent care from a dedicated, compassionate and professional staff who all strive toward a common goal: nurturing body, soul and spirit. In the course of their day, friendly smiles and heartfelt hugs make Warm Beach Healthcare Center a special place for residents, family and staff alike.
