Adventure with “Recreation Without Borders!” By Kirk Blankenship, Publisher

ric and Justin, owners of Recreation Without Borders, know how to help seniors stay active and enjoy the Pacific Northwest! Each of these guys has over 25 years of experience in the Recreation field and received degrees in Recreation from Western Washington University. They purchased the business, Recreation Without Borders, in February 2018. Serving people of any age, Eric and Justin enjoy the Boomer generation as a big part of their clientele. “No One to Go With” Is No Longer an Excuse Want to go do things, but have no one to go with? Have goals to be active, but don’t know how, where, or what? Recreation Without Borders provides a variety of ways to achieve these goals! Day trips typically last from 6 to 9 hours, while multi-day trips can last two or three days. These guys enjoy helping and inspiring local residents of Whatcom, Skagit, Island, San Juan, and 6
Snohomish Counties to stay active and socially engaged. They plan, drive, and participate in the adventures. “No one to go with” is no longer an excuse! Choose Your Outings Adventures with Recreation Without Borders take on a variety of venues, including local trail walks, hikes, cultural outings, tourist destinations, and much more! You can sign up for weekly area walks that drive you to a walking destination, a walk, and back within 3-4 hours. Day treks and longer getaway adventures include a Hell’s Gate Jet Boat tour and river rafting down the Methow River in Eastern Washington! Other outings have a more tourist/town adventure feel, such as the Leavenworth May Fest, Mother’s Day Brunch & Wine in Woodinville, Whidbey Island Garden Tour, Olympic Peninsula Wildflower Tour, and a Granville Island trip in British Columbia. Try the Discover Scotland Tour for a different continent! (Continued on Page 8) Spring/Summer 2019

Recreation Without Borders (Continued from Page 6)
A Sample Adventure My son and I joined Recreation Without Borders on a walk with a group of seven seniors, both men and women. After meeting at about 9 am, we all boarded the Recreation Without Borders van that carries up to 11 people. With seat belts engaged, we headed out on an adventure with Eric at the wheel. On this particular day in March, the cold didn’t slow down these active seniors who were in their 70’s and 80’s! We headed out Chuckanut Drive, parked near Larrabee State Park, and then enjoyed a moderate walk along the InterUrban Trail. Justin and Eric split up, with one taking the lead and the other trailing near the back to allow people to move at their own pace. Perceived Risk Verses Actual Risk Some adventures include zip lining or river rafting. “Wait a minute!” you say, “Zip lining and river rafting? Isn’t that dangerous for those of who are us no longer ‘spring chickens?’” This is one of Justin’s favorite topics! He enjoys seeing seniors overcome “high perceived risk.” For example, ziplining and river rafting trips are actually very low risk adventures. Driving to their destination is a “low perceived risk.” However, as Justin points out, driving is in actuality a “higher risk” event than ziplining or rafting! All that said, safety is the top priority for Justin, Eric, and their guides. They are adept at adapting trips if safety concerns arise to ensure a great experience no matter what comes up. Social Connections These guys take seniors out on adventures year-round. Over the next six 8
months, from April to September, they have well over fifty special trips planned. They also cater and customize to clients’ ideas for a group trip. Most groups work best if there are 8 to 10 people, making the cost affordable and providing lots of social opportunities to engage. When asked about favorite memories, Eric responded, “I enjoy watching people interact with one another on our trips. We get great feedback. We see people make genuine connections, often times becoming like family. And I enjoy the warm hugs too!” Stay Healthier and Happier Eric and Justin have a passion for outdoor recreation and for inspiring seniors to be engaged by staying active, staying fit, staying alive, and staying engaged socially. They are excited to be in business and to enhance their local communities! Whether you’re a Boomer, born between 1946 and 1964, or from the Silent Generation, born between 1925 and 1945 or somewhere on either side, going on adventures will help you stay healthier and happier. Give Justin or Eric a call and find out what adventures they have coming up during this Spring and Summer. There are three ways to learn more: • Go to their website at www. recreationwithoutborders.com • Email Justin at Justin@ recreationwithoutborders.com, or • Skip the technology and give them an old-fashion call at (360) 766-7109. Pick your favorite outings, choose from mountains and rivers or local and far away towns and cities. Make Recreation Without Borders a part of your plans this year! Benjamin Franklin’s Kite
T
here are many true stories in our American history, stories of how we came to even be a nation, how we came to win our freedom. With each story I read I continue to be amazed how doing seemingly small acts can truly bring large results. We all know the name Benjamin Franklin, one of the most influential and patriotic men in our U.S. history. He was a great writer, an author, a great speaker and communicator, a musician, an inventor, a highly successful businessman, and a kite runner. You say, “Hold it, oh yeah, Benjamin Franklin did fly a kite once; had something to do with electricity. But what does his flying that kite have to do with our nation’s freedom?” More than you would have ever imagined – until now. Here’s the story of how Benjamin Franklin’s kite helped America win its freedom. As I mentioned, among other things, Benjamin Franklin was a great inventor and one thing that fascinated him was electricity and, specifically, which he said was “the sameness of electrical matter with that of lightning.” So, rather than just sit around and wonder about his theory, he set out one cloudy day as the sky was charged with bolts of lightning. He proceeded to tie a kite to his special string, and he sent the kite soaring
10
By Jerry Stewart high into the clouds. On the end of the string he tied a simple key and waited. When a lightning bolt struck the kite, traveled down the string, and electrically charged that key, he felt it. He proved his theory. Later that year he persuaded the citizens of his town, Philadelphia, to connect lightning rods to their homes to help protect their homes from the dangerous lightning bolts – and the lightning rods worked. “So,” you say, “that’s all well and good, but how did Mr. Franklin’s kite experiment help America win its freedom?” Well, Mr. Franklin soon became very famous for his discovery, and his fame traveled all the way to Europe. He began to get invitations to visit Europe and to share his scientific knowledge there with them. The people of France fell in love with his wit and charm and knowledge. King Louis XV of France even threw him a great party honoring him. “So,” you say, “how did this all help America win its freedom”? OK, here it is. In 1776 the colonies

Benjamin Franklin’s Kite (Continued from Page 10) needed help to fight against England, so, Benjamin Franklin was sent to Europe to talk with the King of France, and to ask for his help. Because Franklin was like a superstar, in France he was able to use his charm and persuasion to win the help of France in our war for freedom. In 1781, French forces fought alongside our Patriot forces, and helped win that battle at Yorktown – and the Revolutionary War.

Had France not assisted us in that battle, that battle that ended the War would have never been won. And that is how Benjamin Franklin’s kite helped to win America’s freedom. So, the moral to the story? The next time someone tells you to “go fly a kite,” that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Jerry Stewart Author, Speaker, and Syndicated Radio Host One Moment in America V

Choosing the Perfect Eyewear By Alexandra Brandt, Cascadia Eye
E
ven if you never wore glasses previously, chances are there will come a time when you’ll need to. If you’ve worn glasses your whole life, consider trying something new! Here are some useful tips and principles to help you find the very best glasses for you—by keeping in mind three things: comfort, style, and shape. Comfort Lightweight frames are your goto for comfort. And great news for progressive lens wearers—advances in lens design mean you don’t have to have huge frames in order to accommodate multiple powers in your lenses. This means you can choose smaller, lighter styles to maximize comfort. You can also go for semirimless styles, which remove a lot of frame weight. Another choice is the most light and airy option of all—drillmount frames, where there’s nothing on your face but lenses and the most minimalist of hardware.
Style Of course, the great joy of eyewear comes from styling options—glasses are the ultimate accessory, after all. You want something that suits you, but also that is fun to wear and makes you happy. Our biggest piece of advice: don’t be afraid of color. This goes for both men and women! Eyewear that adds a flattering color to your face can provide a lifting and brightening quality you have to see to believe. The key is to try on the frame—our opticians can’t tell you how many people almost missed their perfect frame because they didn’t think the color would look good on them. It often looks completely different on the frame board than it looks on you. Shape In tandem with style is the shape of your frames, which comes in almost endless possibilities—from classic looks to truly wild geometry! Take your face shape into account. If you have a round face, usually a round frame isn’t the most flattering. However, if you just love round anyway, try a style with a round lens inside a more angular frame. Although large frames are popular right now, be careful. If your frame is too wide, it takes over your face. Also, if you have a prescription, careful measurements must be done to make sure your power is placed correctly in the huge lenses. Optically speaking, smaller is better, especially (Continued on next page)

if you wear progressives. Make sure the frame places your eye in the upper third of your lenses when worn normally. This leaves room at the bottom for the reading power.
Paying attention to these three principles will help you find the perfect frame, especially with an expert optician to help you. Together, you and your eyewear professional can choose a style you love—that fits perfectly and comfortably, and maximizes your vision. kagit Regional Health will offer sports medicine and orthopedic physical therapy in the new Skagit Valley Family YMCA, when the facility opens in Spring 2019. The new 57,000 square foot YMCA is located at 1901 Hoag Road in Mount Vernon. The new YMCA features an aquatic center, gym, community room, learning kitchen, “Kids Zone,” changing rooms and a wellness center with running track and exercise equipment. Skagit Regional Health occupies approximately 1,600 square feet on the first floor for physical therapy services. A Natural Connection “This setting really suits the needs of our patients as it offers a convenient space where our physical therapists can work with patients, who can then also access the equipment and facilities of the YMCA in the same building,” said Candace Wittenberg, Director of Rehabilitation Services for Skagit Regional Health. “There is a natural connection between our two programs that benefits the patients we serve.” More than 60 percent of patients seen
for physical therapy do so for sports or orthopedic injuries, Wittenberg said. In the future, Skagit Regional Health is looking to expand services at the site by starting an aquatics program using the YMCA pool facilities, Wittenberg said. Future Potential YMCA officials say they are delighted with the partnership and future potential opportunities to work together. “What a privilege it is to serve our Skagit communities together in partnership with Skagit Regional Health. The Skagit Valley Family YMCA is grateful for the many partnerships that have made this new building possible,” said Dean Snider, the YMCA’s Chief Executive Officer. “Teaming together in this new fabulous building will facilitate a seamless transition from injury rehabilitation through to healthy lifestyle fitness routines and effective injury or re-injury prevention. There may be other ways that, in working together, we can benefit residents of Skagit Valley. We look forward to exploring those possibilities.” Skagit Regional Health also offers physical therapy services at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon and Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington. Fiduciary Services to the Rescue!
R
eady for a new part time job in paperwork? For most of us the resounding answer is “No!” Yet, a job is what it seems we’ve taken on when dealing with transitions of our own estate, finances, will, and/or trust or those items of a relative in need of help. Imagine the accumulation of stacks of paperwork on the kitchen or coffee table. Which paper was I supposed to sign for the Banker? The Lawyer? The Financial Planner? The Doctor? Speaking of the doctor, what about the daunting task of navigating the everchanging health care system? And where did I put that file anyway? Instead of hours of research and shuffling papers, let Fiduciary Advocate 18
services come to the rescue! With superior knowledge and training, a Fiduciary Advocate can manage contracts, wills, trusts, guardianship, power of attorney paperwork, and more. This person will know the next step in situations that come up and can advocate as Power of Attorney or Guardian for you or a loved one if needed. See the ad above for Fiduciary services information regarding a variety of case management and representation services. Housing Transition Help
Downsizing: Stories That Stay By Lisa Boon Meyer, Realtor
M
any seniors have a picture in their mind of staying in their home as they age. Being comfortable with the familiarity of their home seems like the perfect way to grow old. All the treasured belongings and their stories stay within reach. This is an ideal for many, but would work for a select few. It is a good idea to ask yourself…what happens when the “what if” becomes the “what now?” Where Would Your Belongings Go?
You look around and the thought of going through (and parting with) your things is daunting. Almost everything in your home has a story. If something happened to you, where would your belongings go? What if the time came where it was necessary for you to be moved to a retirement community, an apartment, or a loved one’s home? These places are not meant to accommodate your entire home’s belongings and furniture. You may think that your loved ones will be happy to receive all your things, but most of your kids, grandkids, siblings, and loved ones are living in homes or apartments that are already at full capacity. Most of the time, they simply don’t have the room for your hutch full of china, your teacups, or that trophy you won years ago. Even if they did appreciate the value or memories of that item, they don’t have anywhere to put it. How do you tell the story behind those special items? How do you part with them? 22
Special Items Mean Special Stories
Start today, look around your home and pick an item that’s special to you. Why is it special? Take a picture of it with your phone or digital camera, then write the story behind that special item on a recipe card. Go around your home or through that box and take photos of those beautiful teacups you received from your mother, that trophy you won for breaking the school record, and that dusty vase in your hutch that you bought in Paris. Print out the photos and put them in an album with the photos on one page and their story on the adjacent page. Stories That Stay
No matter how much space you may have in the future, this is a great way to go down memory lane! Plus, you won’t have to take all those things with you to your next home. Your loved ones will enjoy going through the book and reading about those items MUCH more than having to go through boxes and closets. If it doesn’t have a story and you haven’t used it in a few years, consider donating it to a great cause. The important stories stay within reach! (Continued on next page)

Housing Transition Help
Consider Housing and Care Options: Call an Advisor
W
e all hope to avoid a move from the home we love! Resources in our communities offer the easiest ways to do this. You can hire someone to tend to the lawn, house, laundry, groceries, and even walk the dog. Professional Home Care Agencies assist with bathing and dressing, making meals, and managing medications. These are great options for seeking at-home assistance. Multiple services, however, can get quite complicated to coordinate. Note that the collective expenses may get higher than your monthly repairs and property taxes! Although there would be people coming and going all week, you may still be alone most of the time. Simplify your finances and improve your social life by considering housing and care options. But, you ask, what are my options? Where do I go? Which care is too much or too little? These good questions require research, time, and emotional energy. Consider contacting a Senior Housing and Care Advisor. These professionals can minimize your research and maximize your time. Here are a review of services we provide: Listen to Your Situation and Ask Questions: A listening Advisor is the key to getting good help, because everyone has a unique situation. We then research and ask questions to get appropriate answers for you. Research for Your Geographical Preference: We at Vibrant Senior Options know the local options in the communities of Whatcom, Skagit, and N. Snohomish Counties. Our knowledge helps minimize your research. Assess Your Situation: We consider your current living situation, care needs, desired social environment, and geographical preference. While considering finances, we guide you in reaching out to appropriate resources, such as Veterans Aid and Attendance benefit specialists and your Long Term Care Insurance Policy (if you have one). 24
Send You a Disclosure of Services and Information Release Form as required by State law. Once you have read and signed this form, we may begin working with you as your Housing & Care Advisor. Get Specific Answers: After meeting with you to learn of your circumstances, we navigate the maze of information and find appropriate, up-to-date answers for you. This maximizes your time for helping your loved ones. Because we partner with local housing and care providers, our advisory services are at no cost to you. Give You a Provider Options Summary: We maintain current information on the housing and care options we point you to. This summary includes services and amenities, monthly rental fees, care fees, and other important information. We recommend three or more options, narrowing down your research significantly! Now you have direction and a plan of action. Senior Housing Tours: When you are ready, we can arrange tours of selected senior living communities. If you prefer, we can attend tours with you. It is important to know the right questions to ask to get the answers you need. Coordinate and Connect: We help with your transitions in housing and care. As professionals, we are interested in connecting you with all that your local community has to offer, specific to your needs and style. The final selection of housing and/or care services is still up to you. And it is free. Call us for help when you are considering housing and care options such as retirement, assisted living, adult care homes, memory care, or in-home care. Minimize your research and maximize your time! Glossary - Public Housing and Eligibility Public Housing: Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments for elderly families. (www.hud.gov) Who is Eligible? Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. A local housing agency (HA) determines your eligibility based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. If you are eligible, the HA will check your references to make sure you and your family will be good tenants. HA’s will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the project’s environment. (www.hud.gov) 30

(www.hud.gov) Section 8 Voucher Program: This is the federal government’s major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments. Project Lifesaver: A Story Changer!
I
By Jan Higman
t’s 4 am. Sue has woken up to find that her husband, Frank, is missing from the home. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Frank has dementia. Dementia is a devastating disease that can impact a person in many different ways. One of these impacts is cognitive disorientation that causes one to wander. This can happen at any time, day or night. Often, people who wander are at a stage where the ability to communicate can be an issue. In this fictional but realistic story, as Frank seeks an exit he will become disoriented and lost. He won’t be able to 38
figure out the way back to the house. This can happen in his yard or several blocks away, or even a mile or more away from home. As family and friends are looking for him, Frank most likely won’t be able to respond to hearing his name called. Dementia has hampered his ability to communicate. Disorientation can also lead to mobility issues, and often times a person like Frank is a fall risk. It is easy for people with dementia to stumble on uneven terrain. In our story, if Frank cannot stand up (Continued on next page) Spring/Summer 2019

Project Lifesaver (Continued from Page 38) again, it will be more difficult to find him. A normal search and rescue for a missing person with dementia can take, on average, about 18 hours. This is where Project Lifesaver shines! If Frank were part of the Project Lifesaver Program, the search time for him can be reduced to an average of 30 minutes. As part of the program, Frank’s family will complete an application that will give searchers some pertinent background information and pictures of him. This program would also fit Frank with a locating bracelet, either on his wrist or ankle. Many people prefer the wrist version, which looks and feels like the size of a watch band. The bracelet has a radio transmitter, which has its own unique frequency. Now the story changes! When Frank “exit seeks” and goes missing, a 911 call is made. Pictures and background Information about Frank are given to a search and rescue team. This team uses the Project Lifesaver VibrantSeniorOptions.com
equipment to detect the frequencies from Frank’s locater bracelet. In this way, Frank can be found in a timely manner. This time factor can make a huge difference in reducing potential injuries and reducing stress! Search and rescue teams are welltrained in how to calm and put a missing person like Frank at ease and return him home safely. Being in the Project Lifesaver Program and knowing how it is used to help loved ones be located quicker is a huge stress relief for caregivers, family and friends. Project Lifesaver makes a difference! This program is available in: • Whatcom County: Dementia Support Northwest, (360) 671-3316 or online at www.alzsociety.org • Skagit County: Skagit County Sheriff’s office, (360) 416-1911 • Snohomish County: Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, (425) 388-3825 Jan Higman, Director Dementia Support Northwest

Total Cholesterol: Understanding and Testing
I
By Jim Emkhe, Clinical Nutritionist
n the health field perhaps no word has become more of a "buzz word" than "cholesterol." I think most would agree that cholesterol has actually become a dirty word, something bad, even deadly. How has this single substance, which is essential to life, become so maligned? The body actually makes abundant amounts of cholesterol for a wide range of essential metabolic needs. So what is cholesterol, what is LDL cholesterol, and how has it become so controversial? What is Cholesterol? Simply stated, cholesterol is a 'sterol' found in most body tissues and is a vitally important constituent in all aspects of life chemistry. One of the many functions of cholesterol is connected to cellular health. It is also the raw material from which all steroid hormones are made and is the substance that makes Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, thus the technical name for Vitamin D – cholecalciferol. Some of the better known hormones made from cholesterol are estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, cortisone & cortisol, HGH, DHEA, aldosterone and androstenedione. Steroid hormones are power brokers in the body and their importance can't be overstated. Without cholesterol there would be no animal life. There are 3 basic types of cholesterol: HDL (high density), LDL (low density) and VLDL (very low density). If added together these three types of cholesterol always equal the total cholesterol count (HDL+LDL+VLDL = Total Cholesterol). The key distinction 44
between HDL, LDL & VLDL is their "particle size. In general the larger the particle size the healthier the lipid. HDL is large particle, LDL is a small particle and VLDL is a very small particle. VLDL is calculated by dividing triglycerides by 5. The ratio between total cholesterol & HDL is called the risk ratio. If the ratio is 4 or less, then the risk factors are low. Risk increases when the ratio is 5 or greater. Example: One patient has a total cholesterol of 300 and an HDL of 100 for a 3:1 ratio. The second patient has a cholesterol of 180 with an HDL of 30 for a 6:1 ratio. Who's at greater risk? Definitely the second individual, even though the total cholesterol is lower at 180. LDL (low density lipoprotein) is actually the "worker bee" of the cholesterol family. It's LDL that makes steroid hormones, generates Vitamin D from sunlight and is essential for cell membrane integrity. A healthy cell should have at least 50% LDL cholesterol in its cell membrane/wall. To simply refer to LDL as the "bad" cholesterol is an over-generalization that fails to acknowledge the importance of LDL. So why is LDL routinely referred to as "bad" cholesterol? To understand why, let's look at the original medical model used to describe how LDL contributes to plaque formation. How Oxidized LDL Leads to Plaque First, before LDL is capable of contributing to plaque formation it must be 'oxidized,' which is what occurs when a fat goes rancid. In the body, oxidized LDL (OxLDL) Spring/Summer 2019
The Senior Café is a free radical capable of damaging other cells which can result in a chain reaction of cell destruction. In response to this, the immune system produces macrophages, a type of white blood cell, to engulf OxLDL and remove it from circulation. Then, through a complex biochemical process, the oxidized OxLDL and macrophages are deposited as plaque. The important lesson here is that only OxLDL is capable of contributing to plaque formation, whereas normal healthy unoxidized LDL is not. Antioxidants are important to prevent excess oxidation. Once oxidation occurs, the immune system responds as described, which unfortunately results in plaque formation. Testing for OxLDL In my practice as a clinical nutritionist, OxLDL is the most important blood test regarding cholesterol risk factors. An OxLDL test is readily available by your request and willingness to pay out-of-pocket. Why OxLDL is not performed routinely makes no sense at all. There's no question that the risk of plaque formation parallels the level of OxLDL. Other Important Tests I should also mention two additional blood tests that are directly associated with OxLDL and help to further define one's risk factors. • MPO (myeloperoxidase) is an enzyme released by macrophages that measures the body's response to arterial damage. Individuals with elevated MPO levels are more than twice as likely to experience cardiovascular mortality, even with normal total cholesterol and LDL levels. As is the case with OxLDL, MPO testing is readily available via your request and willingness to pay out-of-pocket. • F-2 Isoprostanes (F2) is produced when oxidized LDL free radicals react with adjacent molecules causing a cascade of arterial cell damage. This is a chain reaction. The F2 level is very sensitive to early stage plaque formation and research has shown that individuals with elevated F2 VibrantSeniorOptions.com
are 30 times more likely to develop heart disease. Wow!! This is the science associated with LDL cholesterol. LDL is not necessarily the "bad" cholesterol it's made out to be. However, it can be bad if oxidized, but without measuring OxLDL there's no way to know. The common assumption that everyone with elevated LDL is “at risk” is not accurate. This is supported by the fact that nearly half of heart attack deaths occur in individuals with normal LDL. The fear generated around cholesterol levels, particularly LDL, is more of a marketing ploy for selling drugs to lower LDL. Stop the Damage from Oxidized LDL • Avoid hydrogenated trans fats and margarine, and avoid fried foods • Avoid cooking with polyunsaturated vegetable oils, which are unstable and readily oxidized. Coconut oil & ghee (clarified butter) are better choices • Stop smoking • Avoid industrial chemical exposure • Shop organic and avoid agricultural chemicals and preservatives. • Take a quality antioxidant supplement that contains vitamins E, C and A (as palmitate). Vitamin E should contain both Alpha & Gamma E (check label). • Eat a diet rich in colored vegetables and whole fruits which are naturally high in anti-oxidants. Remember, the next time you are scheduled for a blood test, talk to your practitioner about performing tests that are truly accurate relative to determining your risk of a heart attack. Ideally, OxLDL, MPO, and F2 should be measured together in what is often called an Advanced OxLDL Panel. It is simply not accurate to assume that a regular LDL Cholesterol test is relative to risk. It isn't. Jim Emkhe, Clinical Nutritionist Complete Health Services, Inc. 360-734-9777
