were food insecure in the state of Hawaiʻi in 2023.

Household food insecurity was highest on Hawaiʻi Island, followed by Maui, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi.

Since 2021, Vibrant Hawaiʻi has addressed food insecurity on Hawaiʻi Island, serving 12,880 keiki through Kaukau 4 Keiki with the help of over 1,640 community volunteers. We encourage local organizations and community members to get involved and make a difference.

Project Summary

Summer Food Access

Kaukau 4 Keiki was established in the summer of 2021 as a result of the strong advocacy of former First Lady Dawn Ige to address the gap in food access for keiki in Hawaiʻi. This program is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer School Food Services, the Hawaiʻi Child Nutrition Program, and a team of private and public partners, including Vibrant Hawaiʻi. Kaukau 4 Keiki provides free weekly meal kits for breakfasts and lunches during the summer months with a focus on reaching children (Ages 018) in rural communities statewide.

During the regular academic year, thousands of students receive free or reduced-priced meals, but during the summer, many schools are unable to continue their meal program due to staffing and logistical challenges. For students living in rural areas, transportation challenges or conflicting family work schedules make picking up Department of Education Grab and Go meals difficult.

In an economy that already imports 90% of its food, the Kaukau 4 Keiki project provided keiki and teens access to healthy meals, especially in low-income, rural areas across the state.

Vibrant Hawaiʻi, in partnership with local businesses and 33 community groups, led Kaukau 4 Keiki on Hawaiʻi Island for six weeks from June 17 through July 26, 2024. Registrations exceeded expectations, and numerous sites reached their maximum capacity within the first hour, underscoring the need in our Hawaiʻi Island communities.

4,880 keiki picked up weekly meal kits, which were designed according to USDA food guidelines and included over 5 pounds of locally sourced fruits and vegetables, bread, shelfstable milk, and protein. There was a purposeful emphasis on incorporating local produce as part of the Summer Food Service Program: a federally-funded, state-administered program that reimbursed Vibrant Hawaiʻi for the meal kits.

Kaukau 4 Keiki is a powerful demonstration of community volunteerism. This year, families who signed up to receive food were invited to volunteer at their distribution site. In this way, we promote contribution and belonging, and shifting identities from client to contributor

Of the 8,105 registrants, 559 or (6 90%) indicated they would like to volunteer

"I just wanted to aloha all you folks that dedicated your time to help my ʻohana. Times are hard due to the cost of living, but you folks make it a little easier. It's hard to be a working parent that makes 'too much' to qualify for SNAP but struggles and lives paycheck to paycheck. You lighten the load summer after summer for sure. Mahalo for taking care of us. You folks don't know how much this means to me and my ʻohana."

Volunteer Hikaloi

A practice of self-evaluation.

As a result of this project, I grew in my sense of belonging and connection to my community.

As a result of this project, I built new relationships with the community.

As a result of this project, I believe I have the ability to make my community a better place.

Vibrant Hawaiʻi promotes the practice of hikaloi (self-evaluation) as a strategic approach to transform systems. This involves challenging our biases and assumptions about ourselves and others, breaking down silos, and encouraging both individual and collective ʻauamo kuleana.

20% of volunteers learned about Kaukau 4 Keiki through their worksite, followed by friends and family (16%) and church communities (12%).

“I think it was a great experience and that I met a lot of wonderful new people and had the chance to learn more about my community. Thank you for what you do and I look forward to volunteering next year!”

“This was a wonderful experience as is. I can’t think of any changes needed. Our hub had a great team of volunteers whom I have never worked with or probably would have never met if it wasn’t for this experience. Mahalo nui Vibrant Hawaiʻi”

“Mahalo nui for giving us the opportunity to once again be a distribution site for K4K! It really helps and is much appreciated by all 'ohana but especially those that do not qualify for SNAP benefits but still live on a tight budget. It was said endless amounts of times that this program helps out so much with the kids being home all summer. ”

Collaborative Partnerships

As we conclude another summer dedicated to food security and community empowerment, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to every volunteer, partner, and participant who contributed to the success of Kaukau 4 Keiki. Your efforts have created a strong foundation of community resilience, mālama keiki, and aloha.

Mahalo Messages

“The most rewarding part of supporting the Kau Kau for Keiki program is knowing that aside from helping our local farmers and businesses, we are making an impact on the lives of our local families by providing these healthy and sustainable products free of charge. Mahalo to Vibrant Hawai’i for your continued efforts and dedication. And, You can always count on Hilo Products!” - Brandon Bartolome, Hilo Products

“The most rewarding part, the good part, about Kaukau 4 Keiki is giving the parents that come and pick up the food to feed their hungry children. Thank you Vibrant Hawaiʻi for supporting Kaukau 4 Keiki.” - Larry Cacabelos, Laupāhoehoe Distribution Site

“It’s very rewarding to see the keiki that pull up, and some of them are super exciting...I think they just really appreciate it.” - Brittney Martinez, St. Columba
