ST. VIATOR COLL EGE HISTORICAL

St. Viator College was founded in 1868 for the higher education of Catholic youth. Six years later it received its University charter from the State Legislature of Illinois.

By virtue of this charter the institution is empowered to grant degrees in Arts, Sciences, Letters, and Philosophy.

In a few years the first college building was inadequate to acco1n1nodate the large number of stud_ents who came to avail themselves of the advantages which St. Viator College presented for a liberal education. To meet this demand a new building was added in I 87 4 and an addition was 1nade. in 1879. Roy Me1norial Chapel was built in 1889 as a 1nonument to the zeal of the first President, Father Roy. The Gymnasium, a very spacious building; was completed and equipped in 1901. Gradually the original plan for a college .t hat would acco1n1nodate¡ five hundred students took form, but just as its completion was about to be reached, the buildings were reduced to a pile of crumbling ruins by the fire which occurred on the evening of February 21, 1906. The destruction was ahnost con1plete, the new Gymnasium being the only building which escaped the fla1nes. Fortunately this building was large enough to be transformed into class ro01ns, study hall, dormitories, and refectory for the advanced students.

BUILDINGS.

NEw BUILDINGS. Iinmediately after the destruction of the College, the Board of Managers 1net and decided upon a general plan for the disposition of the buildings requisite to meet the needs of this constantly growing institution.

According to this plan the new College will consist of a double row of separate buildings extending north and south through the old campus, and closed at the south by a chapel 9

facing no~th. Four of these b11ildings are now completed.

While the exterior and general appearance of the buildings has not been neglected, special pains have been taken to make the interior as cheer£ ul, com£ ortable, and serviceable as is consistent with the purposes of a college. The eptire college is built of stone . .Fire-proof material has been used, and to insure . further the safety of the students the dormitories are on the second floor, and each· building has two wide iron stairs. The most approved modern appliances for heat, light, and ventilation are used. The class rooms, dormitories, study halls, and corridors are spacious, lightsome, and cheerful. The living rooms, pleasantly situated with east and west exposures, are commodious, heated by steam, lighted by electricity, and supplied with hot and cold water.

MARSILE ALUMNI HALL, which the generous and ever loyal alumni of St. Viator's intended as the completion of the original plan, is the beginning of the new plan. This building, facing the east, is 160 feet long and 82 feet wide and four stories high. The first floor is the Administration Floor, the Dormitories occupy the second floor, and study halls and class rooms the third and fourth floors.

Roy HALL contains one hundred and ten private rooms for the Professors, Seminarians, and those students who desire to rent rooms. This four-story building, situated south of the Gymnasium; has a west frontage of 172 feet and a depth of 50 feet.

GYMNASIUM. The fact that the only building which escaped the fire was the new Gy1nnasiu1n made it possible to have all the buildings up to date in every detail. The erection and outfitting of this spacious building, which was forn1ally opened October 21, 1901, are due to the generous assistance received fro1n former students of the College. Its 10

cost is estimated at $46,000. The building presents a pleasing appearance; it is a massive stone structure I 53 by 97 feet. The interior is finished in ena111eled brick and Georgia pine. Like the other College buildings, it is lighted by electricity and heated by steam. Its equipments leave nothing to be desired in the way of facilities for military exercises, handball, indoor baseball, billiards, pool, bowling, and other games that rob the winter months of their dreariness and at the sa111e time afford excellent opportunities for healthful physical development. Attached to the Gymnasium are shower baths, closets, reading rooms, armory, music room; barber shop, and the confectionery store.

There is also a fully equipped stage and an auditorium with a seating capacity of I,500.

THE HEATING PLANT occupies a central position to the rear of the Gymnasium. The Webster system of steam heat is installed. In connection with this building js the public water ·works, which makes the college system of plu111bing as complete as could ·be had in any modern city.

ScrENCE HALL is_well equipped for a thorough course in Physics and Che111istry. It contains four large rooms~ the Chemical Laboratory, the Physical · Laboratory, the Lecture Room, and the private Laboratory.

LOCATION . . Bourbonnais, Illinois, where the College is situated, is . fifty-one miles south of . Chicago and three 111iles north of I(ankakee. It is easy of access via Kankakee, on the main line of the Illinois Central and the . Big .

Four, the Bloomington branch of the Illinois Central, the Chicago, Indiana and Southern, and the Kankakee and Seneca railroads. Interurban cars leave frequently fron1 Sixty-third and Halsted streets, Chicago, for Kankakee.

Electric cars run from Kankakee to the College grounds every half hour.

Proxin1ity to the great metropolis of the west, railroad facilities, the rich and populous surrounding country, were not the only considerations that induced the Viatorians to found a college at Bourbonnais. The healthfulness of the location and the natural beauty of the scenery make it an ideal spot for a college.

MORAL TRAINING The education which the College wishes to impart . is that which procures the harmonious developrnent of the entire n1an. It is of the cornpletest kind and embraces both intellect and will, the head and heart, knowledge of duty and virtuous habits. Hence a course of religious instruction, graded according to the capacity of the students, runs parallel with the course of secular studies.

The system of discipline enforced aims mainly at the development of character. Hence the greatest care is taken to instill into the 111inds of the students those lofty principles of Christian morality which will make the111 feel at all times that right conduct is essential to n1anhood. A supervision, modeled after that which exists in every well regulated fan1ily, is exercised in all the departments, The professors, whose lives are devoted exclusively to the education of youth, live with the students and n1ingle with then1 freely. The inrti111ate relations which arise from this friendly intercourse between student and teacher is a 111ost powerful factor both in developing good qualities and in curbing unworthy tendencies in the young . . While the government of the College is m.ild and parental, the laws of ¡ good order, propriety, and morality are strictly enforced.

The inoral influence of instruction, persuasion, and encouragement is primarily and mainly relied on, and is seldo1n found ineffectual.

GENERAL REGULATIONS Candidates for entrance are required to bring testimonials of character and class standing fro1n the school which they have last attended. They are classified according to their previous attainments as made known by these testimonials or, in lieu of them, by examination. ... o one is debarred fro1n matriculation on account of his religious opinions.

New students not presenting credits will be obliged to qualify by exatnination.

Non-Catholic students are obliged to be present at the ordinary exercises of public prayer and at the moral talks.

Students whom the President or the College Board judge undesirable will be dismissed.

Violation of regulations in Roy Hall leads to the loss of one's room.

Any person willÂŁ ully da1naging the property of the College must tnake co1npensation for the sa111e.

All letters and packages to and from the students are subject to the inspection of the President, or his representative. Books, periodicals, and newspapers are likewise subject to supervision and approbation.

Leave of absence will not be granted to students during the term except in cases of urgent necessity. ~n such cases the parent should con11nunicate directly with the President. Deductions will be made in the class records for absence fron1 recitations.

Telegrams and letters asking privileges for students must be signed by parents or guardians, and must be addressed to the President of the College.

Visiting days are Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Good accommodations for parents and friends are easily obtained in the village.

In disciplinary matters students over seventeen years of age will be considered College Students ; those under that age Academy Students. In class matters the division will be made according to the College Entrance requirements.

The special regulations are made known to the students son after their entrance.

EXAMINATIONS AND PRSMIUMs. Promotion and premiums depend upon daily records and periodical examinations. Two written examinations are given in the matter studied before Christmas. The semi-annual oral examination g~ven at the end of the first semester reviews the first half year's work. The second semi-annual examination, immediately before commence1nent, reviews the second half of the year's work. ¡ In the meantime two written examinations are given, one at the end of March and the other at the beginning of May. Im1nediately after these examinations the results are read to the student body before the President and faculty. Parents are kept in touch with the application, deportment, and progress of the students by bulletins sent them after each examination. Gold medals and also other prizes for excellence in the various branches are awarded on Commencement day.

COURSES AND METHODS OF INSTRUCTIONS The THEOLOGICAL CouRst comprises all those branches necessary for candidates fo~ the priesthood.

THF. CoURSE IN LETTERS comprises chiefly Ancient and Modern Languages and their Literature, practical lessons in Literary Criticis,m, Rhetoric, Composition, and Oratory.

THE SCIENTIFIC CouRsE, embracing higher Mathematics and the Physical Sciences, prepares students for special university courses in pharmacy, medicine, civil and mechanical engineering.

TH-E CLASSICAL CouRSE ~mbraces all those studies that are required for a liberal education.

It prepares young men for the study of law, medicine, theology, and other university or seminary courses.

THE HIGH SCHOOL CouRSES prepar_e the students for the college courses. , THE _PREPARATORY CouRSE supplies what is deficient in the student for entrance into the high school.

THE CoM MERCIAL CouRSE con1prises all the branches of a finished business education. Graduates in this ¡c ourse are awarded diplomas which ar-e attestations of their practical business ability.

SPECIAL STuDE;NTS. Provisions are 111ade to supply what is derficient in those students who lack some of the requirements for unconditional entrance to any regu1ar class. Itr exceptional cases some students are allowed to omit or discontinue a pr:esic ribed study. Such students are not ¡eligible for any degree.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION. In the earlier . years of each course the method of questions and answers is followed; this method is combined with the lecture syste111 in the more advanced classes. The most approved text books are placed in the hands of the students, and teachers avail themselves of every advantage which the progress of pedagogical science affords in order to further the rapid and solid advancement of their pupils.

DEGREES The act of the Legislature under W?ich St. Viator College was incorporated empowers the Board of Managers "to confer such academic degrees and honors as are conferred by colleges and universities of the United States."

REQUIR.EMENTS. The degree of BacheLor of Arts is conferred upon those who have passed satisfa,c tory examinations in all branches of the Classical Course .as outlined in the Catalogue.

Bachelors of Arts may, by applying to the President and faculty, receive the degree of MAS.TER OF ARTS, provided they have devoted at least two years to literary pt1r· suits since their graduation.

The degree of B~CHE:LOR OF LE;TTERS is conferred upon those who have successfully pass.ed an exan1ination in the Course in Letters.

The degree of Bachelor of Science is awarded to students wlw have completed the course in higher Mathematics and ·Science as outlined in the Catalogue.

The degree of Bachelor or Doctor of Philosophy may be conferred upon Masters of . Arts who have made Post Graduate Courses in Philosophy and Science.

Honorary titles may he bestowed upon those who have distinguished the1nselves in Literature, Science, or the Professions.

Term bills are subject to sight drafts if not paid within ten days after they have been rendered.

Students may enter at any time, and will be charged pro rata from date of entrance after Septfmber; it is much to their advantage, however, to enter at the opening of the session. Should a student leave the College before the close of the season, no refund will be made.

Every student should he provided with three suits of clothes, six shirts, four suits of underwear, two . night shirts, six pairs of socks or stockings, twelv:e pocket handkerchiefs, three pairs of shoes, a dothes bag for soiled linen, four towels, one bathing suit, and all artides necessary for toilet.

The College authorities will not be responsible for un111arked laundry articles.

THE COMMERCIAL HIGH SCHOOL For entrance to the Commercial School, the completion of a regular Grammar School course is required. The aim of this school is to prepare students who desire to enter the business world so that they may he able to solve the complex problems of modern commerce.

Hence the program of studies is far more extensive than a mere course in Book-keeping. The Commercial Diploma will be given only to those students who have satisfactorily completed this program in its entirety; other students will receive certificates stating the work they have done.

Special consideration is given to graduates of High Schools or equivalent schools who enter this course. They are given full credit for their previous attainments. Hence, ordinarily they will be able to finish this work in one year.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT THE PIANOFORTE COURSE The Pianoforte Course is not a recent addition to the curriculum of St. Viator's. Its main obj_ect is to afford an opportunity for students wishing to pursue thee study of thee piano, in conneection with their college work.

This course is established for the purpose of giving a thorough course of instruction in piano, as well as to instill an interest and love for this noble art.

The methods of instruction in this department compare favorably with that of any music school, 1only the best class of music being made the object of study. Its aim is to educate the student upon a regulated course which has been divided into three grades-

ELEMENTARY, INTERMEDIATE AND ACADEMIC ELEMENTARY This grade includes finger-training, notation rhythm. Koehler 241. Sonatinas and rondos by Clementi, Kuhlau, Gurlitt, Etudes by Czerny, Duvernoy, Lemoine and other selections from the easier works of old and modern composers.

INTERMEDIATE All forms of scales, arpeggios, chords and octaves, Etudes from the best authors as Czerny, Kraus, Cramer, and Heller. . Easier selections from Bach, sonatas by Haydn and Mozart, easier comp.ositions

by Schumann, Grieg, Chopin, Raff, and also selections from the modern composers.

ACADEMIC Advanced technical studies. Scales in double thirds and sixths.

Bach two and three part inventions. Sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven and others. Selections from the old and modern composers such as Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Grieg, MacDowell, _F oote, etc.

RECITALS A number of recitals are given yearly by students of the ¡music department. All pupils have the privilege of appearing in these recitals which ¡are open for the students and invited friends.

Two lessons are given each pupil a week.

LIBRARY The students' library, which before the fire contained about 20,000 volumes, will pra,ctically have to be started ov,e r anew, as only aJ?out 2,000 hooks were saved. We take this occasion to appeal to our friends to help in founding a library that will surpass the one destroyed. Special libraries may be donated to the different societies and be named after the donor. So far we gratefully acknowledge the receipt of several hundred volumes from the late Rev. J. J. Callaghan, Butte, Montana; Rev. M. A. Dooling, of Henry, IHinois, and Hon. W. J. Onahan, of Chicago. An annual fee of two dollars is imposed on every student. This revenue is used for the improveni.ent of the library.
