S. T.

VIATEUR'S College is situ~te~ at Bo~rb~nnais (@ Grove, Kankakee county, Illinois. It is · distant about fifty miles from Chicago, and two and a half miles from ·Kankakee city, jus_t on the verge of an extensive grove of forest trees .and hard by the banks of the Kankakee. · The sight is peculiarly beautiful and healthy. Near enough to enjoy the advantages of a city when needed, tbe college is far removed from its distractions and moral dangers. , This i:nstitution, founded in 1865, was raised to the i-ahk, and in v esf'ed .· wi. th . the power aJJ.d privileges of a up:iversity by an act of the State Legislature, in February, 1874. It is under the direction of the phests and brothers of the congregation of St. Viateur. The Professors and Tutors reside in the institution, and devote themselves entirely to the duties of their profession, forming but one family with the students, and exercising a constant supervision, friendly in .the highest degree to discipline, decorum, and good morals. · The syst_em of education embraces: The Commercial . Course; Clas.sics, Sciences, Philosophy, and Theolog·y. No student is allowed to graduate or take his, degrees without having. gone through the prescribed course and having given clear evidences of his worthiness, both at private and public examinations. Those w])o graduate as Bachelor$ of Arts may, on proper application made · to the President and Faculty, receive the degree of MasL

ter of Arts, provided they shall have devoted at least two years to literary pursuits. The study of letters is helped and encouraged by an excellent Circulating Library. (We take this occasion to thank friends for contributions already received and to solicit further patronage for our library.) The College grounds are large and well shaded, having ball alleys and abundant room for all games and athletic exercises. The building can accommodate three hundred students. The halls and rooms are spacious, airy, and comfortable. The College is heated by steam, lighted by electricity, and is furnished with water from a spring by a complete system of water works. The diet of the students is always wholesome and abundant. In sickness they are• nursed and watched over with parental solicitude, and all the care that parents can desire is given to the wardrobe, dormitories, and all those departments on which health, comfort, and economy depend. N. B.--The infirmary, the refectory, the laundry, and dormitories are under the care of the Sisters. There are two sessions, one beginning on the first Tuesday of September, the other on the first of February. At the close of each session all the classes are examined. On both occasions bulletins are sent to parents or guardians informing them of the standing, progress, application, health, etc., of their children or wards. At the close of the academic year candidates for degrees are publicly examined. At the commencement degrees are conferred and premiums and medals are a warded. Students may enter at any time, and will be charged pro rata from date of entrance after September 20; it is much to their advantage. however, to enter at the opening of the September session. Should a student leave the College before the close of the session, no deduction will be made except in case of protracted sickness (of at least one month), or dismissal. A student who bas been at any other institution must produce a satisfactory

recommendation from the Superior thereof. The classes a student is to attend will be determined by an examination. . He may afterwards be promoted for merit. While the government of the College is mild and parental, the laws of good order, propriety, and morality are strictly enforced. The moral influence of instruction, persuasion, and encouragement is primarily and mainly relied on, and is seldom found ineffectual. Visiting days are Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon. Good accommodations for parents and friends are easily obtained in the village.

APPAREL OF STUDENTS. ,_

1 Overcoat. 6 Shirts. 2 Pairs of boots or shoes. 6 Pocket handkerchiefs. 6 Napkins. 6 Pairs of stockings. 6 Towels. 4 Pairs of drawers. 2 Pafrs of slippers. 2 Pairs of overshoes. 2 Suites of winter clothes. 2 Suits of summer clothes. 1 Bathing suit. Combs, brushes, and other necessary articles of toilet. N. B.-- Parents or guardians are strongly urged to see that their children or wards come well supplied with all the .necessary articles of use and wear, as the students sometimes n1ake the want of such things a pretext for visiting¡ the city. The Superior of the institution will yery justly discountenance all such visits, no matter under what plea made, and will be loath to see the necessity of permitting what can seldom occurwithout•useless expense, loss of time, and prejudice to discipline. The College will furnish nothing to students unless a sufficient sum be placed in the hands of the Treasurer. Payments must be made half yearly in advance; if not the student will be liable to be sent home.
