In order to forg o a ny misconceptions It must be stated here th a t the reader s hould n o t atte m p t to gain the impression that th e poe ms of Johnson a re t o be considered great poems.

Some o! them may be great but others are at the most m ediocre. In " Ireland" and "Christmas" the m an may have two las tin g work s , but aside from these two what will the n ext century care about Lion el John son? But whe ther or not these poems are lasting , o n e thing is certain and that is that one w ho is far removed fr om fri e nds and finds himse lf w rappe d in his own lonliness can ~ind solace in reading the pages of th e poems that J o h nso n h as given us. He leads us to a place w here the mind clears an d we can see. Withou t em· playing unu sual words o r mythical terms, be creates an atmosphere that is so comprehended by the mind as t o alleviate t hat sense of m ental s uffe ring that acco m panies lonelin ess. He does no t concl ude with a s u ggestion ; h e paints the pi c ture in its e ntirety.
